President’s Message
“Ihope this latest edition of Dog World finds you and your families well. The Ekka
The year has been marching on and we are on the cusp of the Ekka and a wonderful line up of
Specialty Breed Shows happening. And that is pretty exciting after the Ekka not happening due to
Covid the last few years. And yes, there is another wave happening but hopefully we are all taking full advantage of the vaccination regime and having our second boosters.
I am thrilled with the great location of the Dogs Queensland stall near the rings and seating area. We will be high tech this year with large screens happening with excellent Dogs Australia videos about our dog breeds and dog sports on a loop supported by volunteers on the stand. A big thank you to Michael Yates in the office for making this all happen.
Being a Dogs Queensland volunteer on the stand is a great opportunity to talk to the public and friends about what we are all about and the wonderful doors that open with our many disciplines when you acquire a purebred dog from one of our ANKC breeders or start competing with a crossbred dog in most of our dog sports. There are still spots available in the roster so do contact the office if you are interested in making this important contribution.
As a volunteer you receive a pass to access the grounds for your shift as well as a meal pass and the pleasure of the vibe in the dog area. I am looking forward to doing announcing next week. You will see details below about our super Dogs Queensland showbags. It took a bit of negotiation with Mr Harrison, but if you take on and complete a second shift you will receive a complimentary Dogs Queensland showbag too! The Super Dogs Queensland Showbags I know detail about our showbags has already appeared in a Paw Prints but thought I would set out their super content here. Townsville Tour Many members would be aware that there has been a long-term tradition for Board directors, and previously Council members, to attend show and event weekends in Zones 2 and 3 from time to time. It is seen as an opportunity to meet and greet members and discuss any issues of concern and gain a better understanding of the particular challenges that our members face in the regions. One of these trips happened this last weekend in Townsville and Woodstock and I was really looking forward to going. Unfortunately, I could not go due to ill health, but I gather it was a great success with Directors David Weil, Mandy Schelbach, Vicki Schneider and Senior Vice-President Barb Murfet flying up and attending a dog sports event on the Friday night and helping out at a conformation dog show at Woodstock on the Saturday. I gather Mandy held a very well received junior handler session in the lunch break too. The visit was also a good opportunity for Vicki to conduct some breed training for aspiring judges. Thanks to Director Gordon Mayne for making it all happen and being there too.
Local Councils In recent discussions that Dogs Qld has had with the Ipswich and Brisbane City Councils the importance of our members registering their dogs and complying with council regulations was noted. And as members would know, we recently had an excellent outcome arising from a meeting with Ipswich Council officers, with the Dogs Queensland members discount on dog registrations being reinstated.
So, it is timely to remind members of the importance of checking your local council’s requirements from time to time to ensure your ongoing compliance. Please liaise with the office if you require any assistance in clarifying your council’s requirements.
Apart from it being a requirement under our Code of Conduct in Appendix 4 of the Rules to act within the relevant legislation, which of course includes compliance with local council rules, regulations, and by-laws, it is all about our members setting a gold standard as dog owners and dog breeders in our communities.
I am hoping we will have the opportunity to address an annual conference of local councils about what we are all about in the next year or so.
Stay well, enjoy your dogs, and I wish your horses Happy Birthday!
