The COVID-19 Vaccine: Weighing the Options Submitted by HPIP Dr. Otis W. Kirksey Ahmed Temple No. 37 Imperial Director National Community Health Initiative COVID-19 vaccines help our bodies develop immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 without us having to get the illness. Different types of vaccines work in different ways to offer protection, but with all types of vaccines, the body is left with a supply of “memory” T-lymphocytes as well as B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight that virus in the future.

It typically takes a few weeks for the body to produce T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes after vaccination. Therefore, it is possible that a person could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection. Sometimes, after vaccination, the process of building immunity can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are a sign that the body is building immunity.

Types of Vaccines Currently, there are three main types of COVID-19 vaccines that are or soon will be undergoing large-scale (Phase 3) clinical trials in the United States. Below is a description of how each type of vaccine prompts our bodies to recognize and protect us from the virus that causes COVID-19. None of these vaccines can give you COVID-19.

• mRNA vaccines contain material from the virus that causes COVID-19 that gives our cells instructions on how to make a harmless protein that is unique to the virus. After our cells make copies of the protein, they destroy the genetic material from the vaccine. Our bodies recognize that the protein should not be there and build T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight the virus that causes COVID-19 if we are infected in the future.

• Protein subunit vaccines include harmless pieces (proteins) of the virus that cause COVID-19 instead of the entire germ. Once vaccinated, our immune system recognizes that the proteins do not belong in the body and begins making T-lymphocytes and antibodies. If we are ever infected in the future, memory cells will recognize and fight the virus.

• Vector vaccines contain a weakened version of a live virus—a different virus than the one that causes COVID-19—that has genetic material from the virus that causes COVID-19 inserted in it (this is called a viral vector). Once the viral vector is inside our cells, the genetic material gives cells instructions on how to make a protein that is unique to the virus that causes COVID-19. Using these instructions, our cells make copies of the protein. This prompts our bodies to build T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight that virus if we are infected in the future.

Available COVID-19 Vaccines Three vaccines are currently available in the United States under Emergency Use Authorization. The table below compares those products.

Symptomatic COVID Infection 2-shot series, 28 days apart Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Vector 85% Severe COVID Illness 1 shot only Because of the differences in clinical trial methodology, comparing the available products head- to-head should be avoided-- it is like comparing apples and oranges.

Additionally, it should be noted that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was 100% effective in preventing hospitalizations or death.

Side Effects The most common side effects associated with the currently available vaccines in the U.S. were pain at injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, and chills. A total of seven patients experienced Bell’s Palsy, a sudden, and usually temporary, weakening or paralysis of the facial muscles. There have been six cases of serious allergic reaction. Signs of severe allergic reaction can include difficulty breathing, swelling of face and throat, fast heartbeat, a bad rash all over the body, dizziness, and weakness. All these cases were safely treated and resolved within 24 hours.

Remember, all drugs have side effects, and you must weigh the benefits over the risks. The benefits of the COVID-19 vaccines far exceed the potential risks of experiencing any of the side effects.

The Bottom Line To date, there have been more than 29 million cases of COVID-19 infections in the United States. A staggering 537,936 people have died because of the infection. People at high risk for COVID-19 infection include those 65 and older as well as those living in nursing homes or extended care facilities. Other groups of people who are at severe risk for COVID-19 illness include those with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma/COPD, or those who are immunocompromised including cancer treatment.

Communities of color, African American and Hispanic/Latino, have been disproportionately impacted. It is critical that you take the necessary steps to protect yourself and others from the COVID-19 virus. These steps include social distancing, wearing appropriate face mask, washing your hands, and avoiding large crowds (particularly indoors). It is important that you continue these practices even if you have already received your COVID-19 vaccine.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. among young people ages 10 to 34, and drug overdose is the leading cause for peo ple under the age of 50. Both are preventable.

The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election and the Political Demise of Donald J. Trump

Jackson, Jr., Ph.D. Ahmed Temple No. 37 Oasis of Tallahassee According to researchers at the Brookings Institution and the Pew Research Center, by 2045 and/or 2050 respectively, racial minorities will comprise the majority population in the United States and the current white majority will become the minority. This is significant because the changing demographics in the country explain much of the extreme behavior seen in America over the last decade, deriving from long held fears regarding white replacement and the prospects of diminishing white privilege. After Barack Obama became president of the United States in 2008, cries of “take our country back” quickly arose from the nascent Tea Party. In short, the election of the first Black, non-white male, president of the United States clearly exacerbated anxieties among a particular demographic in the country, and paved the way for a Donald Trump to emerge as Obama’s successor.

Seizing upon the opportunity to delegitimize the first Black president, Trump peddled in racial demagoguery during Obama’s eight-year term, propagating the “birther myth,” which claimed Obama was not a U.S. citizen because he was allegedly born in Kenya. This myth permeated the media and the pressure from it became so great that Obama eventually felt compelled to produce his birth certificate to quiet the unrest. Others joined Trump asserting, pejoratively, that President Obama was a Muslim. These scenarios served as a test case for the ease at which Trump could use race as a wedge issue to divide the country if he ran for office. Trump began his 2016 campaign with the slogan “Make America Great Again,” which some translated into code for “making America white again.” After he became president, he called Mexicans rapists, African countries “shitholes,” said “all Haitians have AIDS,” repeatedly called the COVID-19 the “China virus” and “kung flu,” asserted that white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, were “good people,” told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by,” frequently referred to Black women as “nasty,” and even called Vice President Harris, a “monster.” Trump repeated these demeaning characterizations of racial minorities throughout his presidency, all the while claiming that he is “the least racist person” anyone will ever meet. These factors serve as a backdrop to the November 2020 presidential election.

This article will provide brief background information on Trump prior to his presidency, reflect on his bid to win a second term as president, and examine the ensuing fallout that occurred after the election. It will also discuss Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic during the campaign, the election of the first female and minority vice president of the U.S., the “big lie” promulgated by Trump Republicans after his defeat, the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, the second impeachment of Donald J. Trump, and finally, present challenges facing the nation.

Over his life and career, Donald Trump registered as both a Republican and a Democrat; however, after assessing his best odds for winning a primary contest with one of the major parties, he decided to run for president as a Republican. While he touted his record as being a successful businessman and a “self-made billionaire” to help get himself elected, it turns out that many of his business ventures failed, leading him to file bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009, and early on his fa-

ther gave him what amounted to at least $60 million dollars, helping him to become “self-made,” according to the New York Times. Nonetheless, while being a business man afforded Trump some much desired attention, he actually gained national fame through a reality television show he starred in called “The Apprentice,” and used that platform to catapult himself into the White House. After his stunning 2016 victory over Hillary R. Clinton, Trump became the first person to serve as president of the United States without having any military or government experience.

It appears that the same management skills Donald Trump used to lead his businesses, are the same as those he used to lead the United States. This led to four years of absolutely tumultuous presidential leadership, including managing by tweeting, firing by tweeting, skipping daily national security briefings, suspicious dealings with Vladimir Putin, misleading the American people about the seriousness of the Coronavirus, failing to recognize the need for a national response to the COVID-19, an aversion to reading, and an assault on basic truth, among a host of other significant faults.

Therefore, many Americans, especially those of color, eagerly awaited the opportunity to participate in the presidential election of 2020.

The campaign season included many firsts like masked debates with partitions and social distancing between the Biden-Harris and the Trump-Pence tickets, and limited national campaigning. However, what was not new were the shameless efforts by GOP governors and legislators to suppress the Democrat vote, particularly in minority communities. For instance, in October 2020 Texas Governor Gregory Abbott issued a proclamation reducing the number of drop boxes for mail-in ballots to only one per county. This move significantly impacted places like the Democrat stronghold of Harris County, where Houston is located and comprised of roughly 5 million people.

Notwithstanding these efforts, on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, Americans cast their votes across the country. In the end, the Biden-Harris ticket won the electoral college by a margin of 306 to 232, which Trump, himself, called a “massive landslide victory” in 2016 when he defeated Hilary Clinton by a similar, though smaller, margin. To add an exclama-

tion mark to their electoral college victory, Biden and Harris also defeated Trump by over 7 million popular votes. Even with the ubiquitous voter suppression efforts discussed earlier, there was record voter participation on both sides of the political spectrum with more than 159 million Americans taking part in the election during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. What was impressive about this election, in addition to the high voter participation during the pandemic, was that African Americans and other non-White voters played such a significant role in the election’s final outcome, despite the rampant voter suppression efforts. The state of Georgia serves as a great example of the impact of the Black vote on the presidential and Senate elections, which resulted in that red state becoming blue.

The 2020 election made history for many other reasons. For the first time in U.S. history, an African American/Asian descent woman became the first female and/or woman of color to be elected vice president.

Kamala Harris had served as the junior U.S. Senator from California and had been the state’s attorney general prior to her election to the Senate. She excited voters by bringing diversity and relative youth to the Biden ticket. Additionally, Harris made history by becoming the first graduate from an Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and member of the Divine Nine (specifically Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated), to be elected as vice president of the country.

Unfortunately, there were some Americans who refused to accept Trump’s loss. In a concerted effort to deny the election’s outcome, Donald Trump and his supporters became obsessed with promulgating “the big lie” that Democrats somehow stole the 2020 election from him and Mike Pence, even though Republicans picked up Congressional seats overall.

All but a few Senate Republicans and House members joined the chorus, enabling Trump by refusing to publicly concede his loss. They also claimed he had the right to work through the process to contest the election results by appealing to the courts, even though he had no credible evidence for doing so. Trump continued to repeat and tweet that the election was “rigged” and “stolen.” He even coined the phrase “stop the steal” as part of his effort to remain in power. Conse-

quently, over 60 legal challenges were filed through the courts, and all of the cases failed except for one, according to Marc Elias, a Democratic election lawyer, and that one certainly did not merit the overturning of the election.

However, many of Trump’s supporters still, stubbornly, refused to accept the presidential election results.

When it became clear that the courts would not sustain his efforts to overturn the election, Trump invited his supporters to Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021 to protest Congress’s certification of the Electoral College’s results. His actions on that day will live in infamy as he encouraged his supporters, including known white supremacist and extremist groups like the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and QAnon, to storm the Capitol, hoping this last-ditch effort would prevent Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris from being certified as the next president and vice president of the United States. This insurrection, clearly incited by Donald Trump, himself, led to congressmen and congresswomen fleeing for their safety, the deaths of several Capitol police, over 140 law enforcement officers being injured, and tremendous property damage, among other things. All the while Trump watched the attack unfold on the news and gloated over the melee. For hours he refused to do anything to call off his supporters, even as they headed for the Senate chamber chanting - “lynch Mike Pence.” The irony is that many of these white insurrectionists were rebelling against the very system that has always benefitted them and worked in their favor. Fortunately, once law enforcement restored order, to the credit of Charles Schumer (Senate Leader) and Nancy Pelosi (Speaker of the House), members of Congress were called back to the Capitol that same evening to continue the business of certifying the election results, officially dashing any hopes Trump had of remaining president.

three U.S. presidents have been impeached and those are Andrew Johnson in the 19th century, Bill Clinton in the 20th century, and Donald Trump in the 21st century. As a result of the aforementioned egregious acts by Donald Trump and his MAGA supporters, the House of Representatives impeached him for a second time. What makes this impeachment historic is that Donald Trump is the only American president to be impeached twice, cementing his place in history. In 2019, the House of Representatives impeached him for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with the Ukraine scandal. In 2021 the House of Representatives impeached him a second time for inciting the insurrection on the nation’s capital that occurred on January 6, 2021.

Admittedly, while the Trump years were politically exhaustive, the struggle continues. Many Republican-dominated state legislatures and governors across the country are still working to restrict voter access, asserting that it will reduce widespread voter fraud, a claim that is not true and has been debunked by the courts. If these efforts are successful, GOP leaders plan to limit early voting, eliminate automatic or same-day voter registration, purge voters from voting rolls, reduce the number of ballot drop boxes, and much more. According to the Brennan Center, there at least 250 restrictive voting bills currently being tracked across 43 state legislatures.

Thus, we must redouble our efforts to engage politically and address the injustices that continue to take place in our communities. We must remain vigilant, engage in political education, proactively challenge unfair legislative acts, mobilize our communities and organizations, and most importantly, come hell or high water, we must vote!

We must vote in the mid-term congressional elections of 2022, we must vote in the next presidential election of 2024, and we must vote thereafter. We not only owe it to our ancestors, we owe

it to ourselves. Our vote can make the difference!

Pierce Joins the Desert of Florida Submitted by James Alexander Ancient City Temple No. 63 Oasis of Daytona Beach The Desert of Florida welcomes a new Temple to its already incomparable roster of dynamic and active Temples. On January 30, 2021, Jalil Temple No. 265 was chartered in the Oasis of Ft. Pierce.

The Oasis launched with 30 chartered members including local politicians who felt it necessary to join our prestigious organization. The Temple is led by Illustrious Potentate Inuka Rhaheed and serving as his connection to the Imperial Council is PP Charles Brown. You would think as a new Temple the Nobles would focus on getting their feet underneath them as they work in the community, but that is not the Jalil way. Since joining the organization Jalil Temple has already garnered a reputation as a resource in the Ft. Pierce area and has partnered with several organizations including Lincoln Park Main Street, who specializes in revitalizing the businesses in the African American community. The Temple also sponsors a T-ball team called the Shriners which is composed of 7 young men who are also mentored through the Shriners As Mentors program.

In addition to their efforts with the (S.A.M.) program, Jalil Temple has put a strong focus on empowering youth within their Oasis which encompasses four counties in the Desert of Florida. The Nobles have connected with the school systems in Ft. Pierce to promote a national scholarship for eligible high school seniors. The nobles have also impacted the elementary schools in the area with their monthly reading sessions for 3rd graders. This is just the start and the Temple’s leadership says there is more to come.

When asked about his role as the head of the newly chartered Jalil Temple, Illustrious Potentate Rhaheed says “Since 1893 Shriners have been deeply involved in serving the African American community and I am honored as the inaugural Illustrious Potentate to continue that legacy and be of service to the best Nobles in the Domain. But he is not alone, serving alongside as his Deputy of the Oasis is PP Charles Brown, who comes with a wealth of knowledge after being a Noble for 29 years and serving as the Desert of Florida’s 2nd Ceremonial Master says, “It is an honor that Deputy of the Desert HPIP Pierre Rutledge chose me for this position.” He also says “My sole responsibility is to arm the Temple with the working knowledge of the Imperial Council so that they are prepared to meet the expectations of the organization and the community at large.

Ascension & Creation Submitted by James Alexander Ancient City Temple No. 63 Oasis of Daytona Beach As the Desert of Florida ushered in a new era with the addition of “The Best Kept Secret” in the domain, on January 9, 2021, 31 men who were well recommended had the honor of being bestowed the title of Noble of the Mystic Shrine in the greatest Desert in the Domain. And on April 10, 2021 48 more men were created during the 2nd session of the Imperial Council›s Virtual Creation ceremony. The addition of these Nobles serve as proof that even a pandemic can not stop the growth of a dynamic Desert. The Nobles have all committed to serving the community, mentoring youth, and fundraising for the National Diabetes Initiative.

The culmination of their journey will be in May 2021 when they will officially undergo a fezzing ceremony to cement their right to wear the most recognized head gear in the world, the Fez. The Nobles were just the 2021 the Desert of Florida saw their Actual Past Potentate and These Nobles who have diligently can now say they are ready for does not harbor or condone communities and mentor the this Desert are vast and exceed the

DOF Nobles Hold Virtual Leadership Conference Submitted by James Alexander Ancient City Temple No. 63 Oasis of Daytona Beach The Desert of Florida Today! Tomorrow! And Beyond! That was the theme for the 2021 Desert of Florida Virtual Leadership Conference. The annual event held on March 20, 2021, is commissioned by the Deputy of the Desert and hosted by the Desert Lecture Department. The Department which is led by HPIP Michael Dozier No. 23 created a full itinerary for each level of leadership within the Temples. Deputies of the Oases, Potentates, Chief & Assistant Rabban, Recorder & Treasurer had breakout rooms dedicated to training for their specific positions. Nobles who did not have a position were free to attend any meeting they chose during the conference.

Topics at the conference ranged from how to be an Illustrious Potentate and the challenges that come for the position, Chief and Assistant Rabbans responsibilities and support, keeping your Recorder and Treasurer books in line with the Imperial Council’s Guidelines, to name a few. Speakers for the event were some of the most dynamic Nobles in the Desert whose love for the Nobility knows no boundaries. They included Deputy Imperial Potentate, the Honorable Eric Myers No. 23, Imperial Deputy of the Desert HPIP Pierre E. Rutledge, Imperial Organizer HPIP Ronnie Cole No 182, Desert Chief Rabban, PP Pembrooke Burrows No. 69, and Imperial Deputy of the Oasis of Melbourne PP Andre Reed to name a few.

Although the success of the event can be measured only by applying the knowledge gained that day, 283 Nobles saw fit to make sure they were in attendance. That in itself is considered a tremendous victory in securing the leadership for this Desert today and beyond.

Daughters Convene for Annual Leadership Conference Contributed by Dt. Karen Y. Kirksey, PC Ahmed Court No. 134 Oasis of Tallahassee Desert of Florida The Feb. 6 Desert of Florida Leadership Conference was different from years past-- but it was just as productive. Daughters, led by Imperial Deputy for the Desert Collette Hart Wallace, PC (117) convened virtually via Zoom for a workshop designed to take their leadership skills to the next level.

Advisor, Noble Pembrook Burrows PP (69), brought greetings on behalf of HPIP Pierre E. Rutledge, Imperial Deputy of the Desert (149), and wished attendees “a harmonious leadership conference.”

The 48th Imperial Commandress Jacqualine Brown Arradondo (22) was in attendance, all 12 DOF Courts were represented, and 147 Daughters participated.

Presentations included: “Aspirations for the East” Desert 1st Lt. Commandress Dt. Paula Roberts PC, Ahmed Court No. 134 “The 3 Rs: Recruit, Reclaim, Retain” Desert 2nd Lt. Commandress Dt. Bertha Baker PC, Harram Court No. 96 “Creation” Dt. Lenora Porter PC Imperial Creation Team Malta Court No. 99 “It’s in the Book Part II” (based on Robert’s Rules of Order) Dt. Robin Davis PC, Kazah Court No. 117 Dt. Mechelle Martin PC, Kazah Court No. 117, hosted a lively game of Family Feud. It brought laughs and competitiveness.

Eric R. Myers Booster Club Holds First Fundraiser

Contributed by Dt. Pilar E. Burrows Masud Court No. 71 Oasis of West Palm Beach The Eric R. Myers Booster Club would like to thank everyone who supported its first virtual Coach Purse fundraiser. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing, we utilized several forms of online applications to push everyone to the EricMyers. org website to support the fundraiser.

The drawing was held on February 13 via Zoom, using the Wheel of Names to be fair and transparent. Our own Vanna White (PC Pilar Burrows) did the honors of spinning the wheel and DJ Smitty (Keith Smith) was on the ones and twos keeping everyone entertained. Dt. Doretha Scruggs of Ahmed Court No. 134 was the lucky and proud winner.

Pandemic No Deterrent to Service for Ahmed Court No. 134 Contributed by PC Karen Young Kirksey Ahmed Court No. 134 Tallahassee, Fla. This time last year, who would have thought so many of life’s daily activities could be conducted virtually? It is possible! Ask any Daughter in Ahmed Court No. 134. The COVID-19 pandemic has not slowed progress, when it comes to getting things done. And Zoom has become a second language.

Even in these times, community service is top of mind. Illustrious Commandress Dt. Nancy Paul is a frontline healthcare worker at a Tallahassee hospital. As a respiratory therapist, she understands the need for providing service to the community in a way that is safe for everyone. “There are certain projects we do annually,” said IC Paul. “It’s just important to follow the guidance of Imperial, the CDC and local officials. And that includes wearing a mask, social distancing, washing hands regularly and staying away from crowds.”

High Priestess Dt. Dr. Vanessa Q. Wade, a pharmacist on the frontline, set the tone for the months ahead, by arming the Court with words of encouragement and wisdom in the wake of the pandemic. Her email, “Weekly Word with the High Priestess,” has continued since April 13, 2020: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love, and of a sound mind.”

“Daughters, with all that is going on in the world, this passage of scripture is timely, at best. There is a tremendous amount of fear surrounding this pandemic called COVID-19 and rightfully so. There are many unknowns regarding this deadly virus. But God...He has equipped us with all we need to protect ourselves from serious illness; a sound mind to listen to healthcare professionals and follow the directives of the experts, power to make the right decisions for ourselves and our families, and a spirit of love and compassion to assist those who cannot help themselves. During this time of quarantine, let us keep one another lifted in prayer. Many are dealing with job loss, compromised health, financial strain. Let us use this time to listen to the voice of God and strengthen our connection with Him. God knows our every weakness; He will answer when we call on Him for guidance and wisdom.”

August Voter Education/Registration From August until Election Day on Nov. 3, Ahmed Court was focused on Get Out the Vote activities. HPC Dt. Lorraine James chairs the Court’s Voter Education/Registration Committee. She participated in Vote By Mail Training, led an online voter preparedness workshop and provided a voter information sheet for Court members to share with family and friends.

September Blessing Bags for the Homeless Ahmed Court Daughters donated toiletries, razors, combs and brushes, face masks, socks, gloves and more for homeless women and men at the Big Bend Homeless Coalition.

October Quarterly Street Cleanup Ahmed Court helps to keep Saxon Street beautiful, even during a pandemic. As participants in the City of Tallahassee’s “Adopt A Street” program the Court has cleanup duties quarterly, sharing with Nims Middle School, a neighboring Bond Community partner.

Virtual Breast Cancer Walk First Lt. Commandress Dt. Shauna Robinson coordinated a virtual breast cancer walk for Ahmed Court, in support of the Desert of Florida’s observation of Women’s Health Awareness Month. Ahmed Court makes an annual contribution to “Thinking Pink,” the Imperial Court Daughters’ initiative to benefit the American Cancer Society and other organizations that help those affected by breast cancer. Daughters were encouraged to wear pink to walk, post their pictures on social media and use the hashtags: strideforstrideAhmed Court and WeareFlorida. Five random posts were selected for a gift card giveaway.

Leon Court Judge Speaks to Ahmed Court Youth Club Virtually Leon County Florida Judge Nina Ashenafi Richardson is no stranger to Ahmed Court and its Youth Club. They first met her in 2019 when she invited the young ladies to her courtroom to see her at work. This time she participated in a Zoom meeting and talked to them about self esteem and other issues of particular interest to girls. A scavenger hunt was the icebreaker for the event. “Judge Nina” looks forward to her next meeting with the Ahmed Court youth.

November “Souls to the Polls” On the final day of Early Voting in Florida, Sunday, Nov. 1, Ahmed Temple and Court walked to the Leon County Civic Center at the invitation of Florida Senator Al Lawson to cast ballots and encourage others to vote.

Election Day Nine Ahmed Court Daughters received training and worked the polls on Election Day. Project Annie Thanksgiving Dinner For more than 20 years, Annie Johnson has provided a Thanksgiving meal for about 1,200 people in Tallahassee’s Frenchtown community, most of whom are homeless. With the help of volunteers like Ahmed Court she gets it done and does the same thing for Christmas. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of a sit-down dinner, Ms. Annie provided takeout meals. This was Ahmed Court’s 6th year assisting the effort. Daughters donated turkeys, hams, and ingredients to make all the side dishes. On Thanksgiving, IC Nancy Paul and PC Juan Cox helped to serve the meal.

December Rockathon Ahmed Court is a regular supporter of the annual Rockathon—a rocking chair marathon to benefit the John G. Riley Museum/Center (for Black culture). But this year, it too was held virtually. The Court made its donation and was invited to videotape a 30-second holiday greeting that would run on WCOT, the City of Tallahassee’s television station. IC Paul and PC Paula Roberts were featured in the commercial.

Project Annie Christmas Dinner Ahmed Court donated money to Project Annie to purchase turkeys for the annual community dinner.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Fundraiser Ahmed Court Daughters have served as Red Kettle bellringers for the Salvation Army since 2015. December 2020 was the first time we were unable to participate in person, due to COVID-19. PC Fannie C. Bellamy coordinates the effort. She encouraged Daughters to go online and make donations on behalf of the Court. Money raised helps needy individuals and families in Tallahassee.

Masks for Students and Teachers Ahmed Court Daughters teamed up with Ahmed Temple No. 37 to donate 500 face masks to students teachers and staff at the Jefferson Somerset Charter School in Monticello.

Christmas gifts for Ahmed Court’s Most Senior Daughters The Court gave Christmas gifts to our Golden Years Mentoring Daughters—they are 73-years and older. Nine Daughters received gift bags filled with slipper socks, face masks, hand sanitizer, lip balm, eyeglass cleaning cloths, cookies and a Christmas card. IC Nancy Paul made drive-through deliveries.

Beyond The Fez: Noble Thomas “TJ” James and Dt. Lorraine James HPC Contributed by Dt. Lorraine James HPC Ahmed Court No. 134 Oasis of Tallahassee On Dr. MLK Day, January 18, 2021, Dt. Lorraine James HPC (No. 134), Noble Thomas “TJ” James (No. 37), and volunteer Felicia Williams pulled together to answer the call of 46 families -- 175 people-- in need of food, face masks, socks, toilet paper, and other toiletries.

As Daughters and Nobles do, they take heed and respond. The crew of three provided the families: 120 pairs of socks, 180 rolls of toilet paper, 230 facemasks (donated by the Leon County Commission), toothbrushes, and more. Noble TJ delivered the kits to Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church for the families. “It was both a joy and a pleasure to serve,” says Dt. James.

As this project will continue quarterly for the families, the next big event was held in March at the fairgrounds in Tallahassee. Noble and Daughter James worked with Farm Share, Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor, the host, and lots of volunteers, to distribute free food to 400 families.

Ahmed Temple and Court Reach Out to Schools in the Big Bend Submitted by Noble Theodus Baker, IP Ahmed Temple No. 37 Oasis of Tallahassee As COVID-19 numbers continued to rise in the state of Florida, the Nobles of Ahmed Temple No. 37 delivered much needed face masks to the student populations of two area schools.

On December 16, they visited Bond Elementary School in Tallahassee. While on campus, they met with school Project Manager, Brenetta Lawrence. The Nobles placed over 500 masks in her possession.

During the visit, Mrs. Lawrence thanked the Temple for the donation and shared information regarding additional needs of the students when asked by the Nobles. Illustrious Potentate Theodus Baker discussed recognizing the school’s need for male mentors and requested to revisit the topic when normalcy returns. “We know of the historical relationship between Ahmed Temple No. 37 and Bond Elementary School,” said Mrs. Lawrence. We thank you for the masks and look forward to seeing you on campus again.”

On December 17, assisted by Ahmed Court No. 134, the Nobles traveled to Monticello, Florida, to deliver over 500 masks to the Jefferson Somerset Charter School. On a very chilly morning, the Nobility and Daughters were introduced to school administrators and the local media at the campus entrance by Noble K.D. Morley, the school’s the band director and a member of Ahmed Temple. The importance of service was emphasized as well as the safety and security of the school’s children. “We gave the students the tools necessary to help them be safe. The main goal is for the students to know staff cares for them, even while on break and away from school,” said Morley.

While each organization received the gratitude of Vice Principal Andre Galley and Assistant Principal Courtney Oliver during introductions, Baker discussed the importance of assisting students and their families during such challenging times. “We simply wish to do our part in the community. It is truly an honor to serve Jefferson Somerset Charter School this morning.” Imperial Deputy for the Oasis, Dt. Rosa Tucker, brought well wishes on behalf of Illustrious Commandress Dt. Nancy Paul.

For many children, school serves as a refuge while case numbers continue to escalate in Florida. Ahmed Temple and Ahmed Court were pleased to be able to provide supplies which help to mitigate the spread of COVID, to Bond Elementary and Jefferson Somerset Charter schools.

Ancient City Temple: Being a Leader Contributed by Charlie Washington 9th Illustrious Potentate Ancient City Temple No. 63 A leader is someone who wants to make a difference in the lives of others.

A leader is one who is not there just for title, but for the work and reward.

Leaders come from all walks of life and include those in the professional workforce, running a household, or in the community.

How did I become a leader? Is it the result of self-employment opportunities the past 10 years? Is it the result of becoming a father 14 years ago? In my opinion, coaching youth sports was instrumental in my development as a leader. For the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of coaching young men of different ages in football and basketball. Being a coach confirms my opening statements; making a difference in the lives of others and recognizing that it’s not the title, but the time and effort required to succeed at the position.

Coaching has taught me the importance of being organized, how to multi-task whether on or off the field, and how to enjoy victory as well as learn from defeat. Coaching prepared me to be a father and I’m still learning to this day.

Coaching inspired me to desire more from my employment, so I became self-employed.

As I continue my Masonic journey, I have recently been elected Illustrious Potentate of Ancient City Temple No. 63. Even though Shrinedom may be a different ballgame, I desire to make a difference, I am willing to lead by example, as well as roll up my sleeves to work hand in hand with the membership in order to make our Temple successful.

I leave you with this, “The vision is clear at Ancient City Temple No. 63. Put your best foot forward and leave no doubt that those behind are following the right path.”

Harram Court No. 96 in the Community Contributed by Dt. Gail Williams, PC Harram Court No. 96 Oasis of Tampa Harram Court No. 96 adopted Foster Elementary School last year. Foster Elementary School is a public school located in Tampa with 482 students in grades PK, K-5. The Court donates school supplies as well as volunteers in the classroom. The school also provides a food pantry for students and their parents. Due to COVID-19, going back to school would be a little different this year, and the students needed back-to-school supplies.

Harram Court No. 96 Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Moffit is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida. 2020 has been a powerful reminder that we are all in this together, and our choices and actions have the power to protect the most vulnerable among us in a big way. The same holds true when it comes to breast cancer. Harram Court No. 96 wanted to support women battling this disease to let them know that their life is important. We wanted to inspire hope and be a force for good. Harram Court 96 members packed 118 goodie bags for cancer patients at Moffit. These items will be delivered to Moffitt on October 6, 2020.

The Women would have been honored during the annual Commandress Ball held in March. Due to the pandemic, the Ball was cancelled. Illustrious Commandress, Iris Warren wanted the women to be honored and she decided to do a drive by presentation to honor these outstanding Women in the Community. Representative Hart and Senator Joyner were not available at the time, but the Illustrious Commandress delivered the baskets later.

Each year Harram Court No. 96 recognizes three outstanding students in the Tampa Bay area who demonstrate leadership, commitment to the community, academic achievement, moral and ethical character, as well as financial need. Each student received a $500 award to assist with furthering their education. Awards were paid after the students provided verification of their college enrollment. The L. Glenn Brown Memorial Scholarship was established in February 2005, to honor the late Past Illustrious Commandress, Dt. Lula Glenn Brown, who was a retired educator for the Pinellas County School District. Dt. Brown gave many years of dedicated service to her community and its children.

The 2020 scholarship recipients: •Joidyn M. Clark, a graduate of Tampa Bay Technical High School, Tampa, Florida. Joidyn is currently attending Florida A & M University, Tallahassee, Florida, majoring in Nursing.

•Julianna Wardell, a graduate of Countryside High School, Clearwater, Florida. Julianna is currently attending Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in Political Science.

•Savannah Verlyn Dix, a graduate of H. B. Plant High School, Tampa, Florida. Savannah is currently attending the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, majoring in Biology (leading to pre-med).

Harram Court No. 96 believes in supporting students’ education and the L. Glenn Brown Scholarship funds are designed to offer educational opportunities to students from our communities. Harram Temple No. 23 Steadfast in Serving Community Contributed by Noble Anthony E. Jones Harram Temple No. 23 Oasis of Tampa The Nobles of Harram Temple No. 23 remain safe, but very active in our community service endeavors. Each year prior to 2020, the Temple distributed more than 70 food baskets and clothing during the Christmas holidays to needy families and individuals in the Tampa Bay area. Although faced with the most alarming pandemic the world has ever experienced, Nobles remain undaunted and steadfast in their mission to promote charity.

On December 9, 2020, at New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida, Nobles of Harram Temple, led by Illustrious Potentate Alejandero J. Kelly, presented a $1,000.00 check to State Representative Diane Hart, supporting the East Tampa Business and Civic Association Food Bank Distribution Program for the East Tampa neighborhoods. Supporting community events and programs like the East Tampa Business and Civic Association’s Food Distribution Program among the many other Tampa Bay area charitable programs is what makes all the difference to those we serve. This makes Harram Temple No. 23 one of the BEST temples in the Domain.

Harram Temple Helps One of its Own in a Labor of Love Contributed by Noble Anthony E. Jones Harram Temple No. 23 Oasis of Tampa Past Potentate Clarence Gaines has been an active and loyal member of Harram Temple No. 23 for over 35 years.

He has seen the Temple evolve into the charitable juggernaut it is today. Gaines has been involved in every facet of the Temple’s programs and has contributed much of his time and resources to ensure the Temple reaches its community service and charitable benchmarks every year since becoming a member.

Gaines and his lovely wife of 68 years, Past Commandress Nara Gaines, have lived in the Tampa Bay community much of their lives. Recently, the Nobles of Harram Temple performed landscaping and minor home improvement work for the Gaines family. Illustrious Potentate Alejandero J. Kelly, Chief Rabban Marc S. Brewington; Past Potentates Tony D. Downing, George Wallace III., James Holmes; Honorary Past Potentates Alvin E. Walker and Adrian Blount; Nobles Belton Moody and Ronald Boykins provided much- needed assistance and outstanding service to a worthy fellow Noble and his family during the pandemic. “This gesture proved to be a true sign of brotherly love and community service,” said Past Potentate Gaines. He and his wife were surprised and very appreciative.

Taking great care of its own goes to show that charity begins at home. The Nobles of Harram Temple No. 23, Prince Hall Shriners, Oasis of Tampa, Desert of Florida exemplify the best of what it takes to be Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Past Potentate Clarence Gaines has much to do with why we are the “Flagship” Temple in the Desert of Florida and throughout the Domain.

Idris Temple Giving Back in 2020 Submitted by Noble Alex Gonzalez Chief Rabban Idris Temple No. 239 Oasis of Fort Walton Beach The Nobles of Idris Temple No. 239 are no strangers to the community.

Idris Temple is a service organization that prides itself on helping those in need. The local Temple greatly enjoys community partnerships. It demonstrates this by their Nobles’ desire to support by giving back through charitable endeavors.

October 21, 2020- Idris Temple No. 239 held a blanket and sock initiative for the homeless. The Nobles donated 86 blankets and 120 pairs of socks to One Hopeful Place Homeless Shelter in Fort Walton Beach.

November 3, 2020- Idris Temple No. 239 and Okaloosa County NAACP collaborated to oversee the election voting sites. Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez volunteered as a non-partisan election protection poll monitor. His role on that historic day was to ensure that all citizens were able to cast a vote without intrusion.

December 7, 2020- Idris Nobility marched in the annual Fort Walton Beach Christmas Parade. The Nobles turned out to help spread Christmas spirit and hand out candy.

December 16, 2020- Idris Temple No. 239 noted the Temple’s yearly election. The Temple congratulates the 2021 Divan: Illustrious Potentate Travis Greenwood, Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez, Assistant Rabban Derek Andrews, High Priest and Prophet Ron Cook, Oriental Guide Yakariel Robinson, Recorder HPP Willie Wilson, Treasurer HPP Ed Jennings, 1st Ceremonial Master Greg McCollough, 2nd Ceremonial Master Roger Delfosse, Chief of the Guard Al Harris, and Outer Guard John Terry. Idris Temple No. 239 is excited about the upcoming year and look forward to continuing its work in the community.

In August 2020- Idris Temple No. 239 led a bookbag initiative distributing school supplies to families affected by COVID-19. Idris Temple Nobles were spotted at Sylvania Heights First Baptist Church and Gateway City Church blessing nineteen families with bookbags. The Nobles did not stop there. The bookbag giveaway continued and 48 more supply-filled bookbags were donated to Davidson Middle School in Crestview. The kindhearted Nobles were recognized by Principal Jay Sanders of Davidson Middle School who presented the Temple with a Certificate of Appreciation.

On September 19, 2020- Idris Temple Nobles rolled up their sleeves to assist with the Feed the City food initiative. They partnered with numerous local organizations, military personnel, politicians, and law enforcement to distribute over 40,000 pounds of food to families in need.

October 19, 2020- Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez and High Priest and Prophet Ron Cook attended the City of Crestview Government Week City Council meeting. The Nobles addressed the Mayor and City Council with a brief explanation of the Temple’s direct impact on the community. The event allowed the Nobles to network and gain insight on future initiatives and partnerships.

Kazah Court Hosts Domestic Violence Zoom-a-Thon Contributed by Dt. Mechelle Martin PC Kazah Court No. 117 Oasis of Miami The great writer who said: “Write the vision and make it plain,” was encouraging one to state your plans, write them down, and watch them manifest. This is exactly what Kazah Court No. 117 set out to do for domestic violence! The goal was to raise awareness and funds to support an end to domestic Violence in our communities both locally and throughout the United States.

On October 9, 2020, Kazah hosted a virtual Domestic Violence Zoom-A-Thon and invited Daughters, Nobles, family and friends to hear the story of our own, Imperial 2nd Lt. Commandress Karen Wright-Chisolm, a survivor of domestic violence and co-author of a #1 best-selling book, “Silent No More!” Her story was captivating, sad, and sometimes hard to hear. Her words…like hot wax rolling down a candle stuck to the very heart of each person who listened.

Dt. Wright Chisolm was thorough and purposeful and her story of survival was triumphant! The Zoom-A-Thon also featured one of Kazah’s former scholarship recipients, Leia Ambrister, who favored us with a beautiful solo entitled “I’ll Rise Up” by Andra Day. Dt Lila Gaston, HPC served as the effervescent Mistress of Ceremonies, Dt. Robin Davis, PC was the energized Zoom-teleprompter and Dt. Angela Chandler closed the program with Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.” Indeed, at the close of this program, after witnessing the resilience of our Daughters - we could all individually say, “Still I Rise!”

As a result of this program, Kazah donated $1,000 to SafeSpace Foundation and Sanderi Foundation dba Lotus House Shelter – with plans to consistently support these efforts in 2021. We learned domestic violence is alive and well. It happens to people in all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, education, profession, or socioeconomic status.

Kazah Nobles March in Historic Celebration Contributed by Noble Leslie Elus Kazah Temple No. 149 Oasis of Miami Kazah Temple No. 149 and Offspring Lodge No. 252 PHA participated in a celebratory parade in Coconut Grove last fall. The Oct. 24, 2020 parade was held in honor of the historic Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church’s 125th Anniversary in ministry.

Macedonia’s quasquicentennial celebration had an additional distinction as the church is the oldest African American church in Miami-Dade County. The parade reflected the community’s rich Bahamian roots, featuring junkanoos dressed in traditional garb.

Parade participants included Kazah’s motorcycle and bicycle units behind Illustrious Potentate J. Hiram Williams and the walking team. They followed a route along the church’s former locations and then down historic Evangelist St. and Charles Ave., highlighting some of the oldest sites in the West Grove.

Kazah Nobles and Daughters Host Holiday Food Distribution in Opa-Locka Submitted by Noble Leslie Elus, Recorder Kazah Temple No. 149 Oasis of Miami Kazah Temple No. 149 Shriners partnered with Kazah Court No. 117 Daughters, MAC Edwards Produce & Company, Carolyn Taylor Pates Enterprise, Inc. and the City of Opa-Locka to host a holiday food distribution event in November 2020.

Residents received pre-packaged food boxes containing milk, potatoes, assorted meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. Event volunteers included Alvin Burke, Commissioner of the City of Opa-Locka.

In the absence of Illustrious Potentate J. Hiram Williams, Chief Rabban Rashard Jenkins, Assistant Rabban Rodrigue Jean, Deputy of the Oasis Harold Brown, Jr. and Noble Kevin Myles directed the volunteer activities for the event. Imperial Deputies of and for the Desert of Florida, HPIP Pierre Rutledge and PC Collette Hart Wallace thanked the Nobles and Daughters for their help during the community’s time of need.

Lisa Shiver, a representative from MAC Edwards Produce told event volunteers, “Farmers should not have to throw away good produce when there are plenty of people in need. Thank you for doing this service for the community.” Through our collective efforts, 1,000 grocery package units were distributed to families that reside in Miami-Dade County.

Malta Temple and Court Spread Holiday Cheer Despite Pandemic Contributed by Noble Travis G. Hadley Malta Temple No. 143 Oasis of Orlando Malta Temple No. 143 and Malta Court No. 99 had the holidays covered in terms of giving back to the community. With masks in place, they got to work.

For Thanksgiving they presented turkeys and gift cards to three families.

For Christmas, the Nobles held another successful “Breakfast with Santa” and distributed bikes to area kids and food for their families. Observing COVID-19 protocols, they found a safe way to get the job done.

Masud Court: Chef for a Day Contributed by Dt. Asia McMillian, PC Masud Court No. 71 Oasis of West Palm Beach

The Daughters of Masud Court No. 71 served as “Chef for a Day” recently, and prepared dinner for residents of the Quantum House. The Quantum House is a residence where families whose children are receiving treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions stay. The children and their parents come from every continent.

Due to COVID-19 Protocols, food was prepared at home rather than at the Quantum House by Dt. Phyllis Benson, Dt. Asia McMillian, PC, and Dt. Roberta Nixon, Illustrious Commandress. Dt. Latasha Williams, Dt. Irita “Ann” McClary, Dt. Rose Anne Brown, Dt. Akisha Wims, PC, Dt. Pilar Burrows, PC., and Dt. Lashawn Floyd were a few of the Daughters who delivered the prepared food items to the Quantum House.

During 2021, Masud Court will take on the role of “Chef for a Day” quarterly, while alternating between providing breakfast and dinner. The “Chef for a Day” is considered one of the best ways that volunteers can serve the families at the Quantum House.

Masud Temple No. 69 Serving the Community Contributed by PP Pembrook Burrows Masud Temple No. 69 Oasis of West Palm Beach Masud Temple No. 69 Holds Mask Give-Away and Vote By-Mail Event Prior to the November 2020 General Election, Masud Temple No. 69 participated in a free Mask Give-Away and Vote By-Mail Event. It was conducted in three locations: West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Ft. Pierce. Several hundred masks and voter education flyers were distributed to members of those communities.

Masud Temple No. 69 Teams Up With the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for Toys for Tots Members of Masud Temple No. 69 were proud to work with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

It provided 80,000 toys to less fortunate children in Palm Beach County. Masud Temple Nobles assisted by unloading trucks of donated toys, counting them and sorting by age; bagging the toys for distribution and assembling bikes.

Amid a deadly virus that has impacted all of us in some way and a nation that is fractured due to racial injustice — it is imperative that each of us answers the call to help our fellow man. In these heart-wrenching times, we must carry each other’s burdens, as Galatians 6:2 tells us.

During this global crisis, the Nobles of Osiris Temple No. 67, led by Illustrious Potentate Dr. Steve E. Primus, and the South Brevard Branch of the NAACP came together to donate over 400 three-layer surgical masks to the essential workers of the Florida Department of Health (Melbourne Clinic).

These community organizations understand that a kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Therefore, with each new challenge that we face, let us stand together to uplift our communities, and be a beacon of light in a dark world.

We are a small temple, but the footprints that we leave in our community — the hot sands of the Oasis of Melbourne are BIG and BOLD. In other words, WE ARE THE DESERT OF FLORIDA, WE ARE OSIRIS TEMPLE, and above all else, WE ARE COMMUNITY SERVANTS!

Remembering a Rabia Court Senior Daughter With a Heart for Giving Contributed by Dt. Yvonne McKesson, PC Golden Years Mentoring Chair Rabia Court No. 25 Oasis of Jacksonville The size of your gift does not determine the impact. It’s the love and kindness rendered that leave a lasting impression.

With the death of Dt. Delores McNair Duffee, in January of this year, Rabia Court No. 25 (Oasis of Jacksonville) and the Desert of Florida, lost a special person.

Dt. Duffee cannot be replaced, but she left a shining example for her fellow Daughters to follow.

Dt. Duffee was a member of the Daughters for more than 40 years, but that did not stop her from working hard. She volunteered at a Jacksonville nursing home weekly when her health permitted. In addition to her community service at the nursing home, the senior Daughter chaired the Court’s Voices of Rabia committee who sing Christmas carols each year at the nursing home. The Court makes monetary donations during the year to the facility for their bingo prizes.

The COVID-19 pandemic prevented Dt. Duffee from volunteering at the nursing home in 2020. Nevertheless, she contacted the activities director and arranged to make a special delivery at the facility. She enlisted the support of other Daughters to help her fill gift bags with peppermints and candy canes for the residents.

Dt. Duffee and her team personally delivered the bags and the Court’s donation to the nursing home.

Rabia Temple and Court Dine with Seniors …

Again!

Contributed by Noble O. Martin Rabia Temple No. 8 Oasis of Jacksonville Thursday morning November 26, 2020 in Jacksonville, Florida, the Nobles of Rabia Temple No. 8 and the Daughters of Rabia Court No. 25 came together to prepare for their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner for area senior citizens. This community service event has been held continuously for more than 30 years.

For more 20 of years, PP Norman Hawkins has personally coordinated logistics with building managers at several senior living facilities to ensure uninterrupted food delivery to the designated residents.

In 2019, the Rabia family dined-in with more than 200 Thanksgiving guests while delivering over 80 plates. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic forced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue recommended protocols, including restrictions on public gatherings. That did not stop Rabia. Just like most restaurants, they switched to takeout. Meals were packed into boxes, dispatched by the “Noble Express,” and personally delivered to over 140 senior citizens.

Rabia Temple and Court hit the ground running by quickly and efficiently assembling “to-go” plates with a hot, ready-to-eat meal of turkey, ham, yellow rice, green beans, collard greens, candied yams, dressing, gravy and dinner rolls.

Illustrious Potentate Demetrius Bruno and Illustrious Commandress Yvonne McKesson thanked the Rabia Family for their time, hard work and commitment to its community support efforts with another successful event.

Rabia Temple No. 8 Tribute to Past Potentates Contributed by PP Stephen D. Johnson President-Past Potentate Council Rabia Temple No. 8 Oasis of Jacksonville

Following the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner with the Seniors in the Oasis of Jacksonville, the Past Potentate Council of Rabia Temple No. 8 thought it was an ideal time to honor the trailblazers instrumental in laying the foundation for the Temple to build upon. In December, the Council paused to remember all the Past Potentates and Honorary Past Potentates who have passed from labor to reward. A memorial video was produced and posted on various social media sites including Facebook @rabiaserves.

The current Council members have accepted, with great honor, the opportunity to be stewards of the Temple’s traditions and to provide tremendous leadership to the Nobility of Rabia Temple No. 8.

The Past Potentate Council encourages all Nobles to never forget our predecessors and to find someone who may be experiencing hardship, so that holiday cheer can be delivered to that person or family because it is the Noble way! Also, Nobles are encouraged to remember to let their service speak for them.

Johnson Rabia Temple No. 8 Veterans Committee Oasis of Jacksonville The Rabia Temple No. 8 Veterans Committee, under the leadership of the 46th Illustrious Potentate Demetrius Bruno, showed their appreciation by posting a video on various social media platforms such as Facebook (@rabiaserves ), saluting the Temple’s veterans on Veterans Day for their service to our country.

The video displayed Nobles in their military uniforms, and the project demonstrated to many of the Nobles that we have more in common than just being a Noble. Special thanks to Noble Wilmer Milton for his diligence and dedication, as he collected the pictures instrumental in making sure all the veterans were represented and honored.

Rabia Temple No. 8 Hosts Annual Christmas Toy Drive Contributed by PP Stephen D. Johnson President-Past Potentates’ Council Rabia Temple No. 8 Oasis of Jacksonville Under the leadership of Illustrious Potentate Demetrius Bruno, The Rabia Temple No. 8 Past Potentate Council spearheaded the 2020 Toy Drive. The Toy Drive was a revision of the Temple’s Annual Children’s Christmas Party which historically selects children from one local daycare and provides them with toys and clothing. However, 2020 was without a doubt a very tough year as many families were adversely affected by the pandemic. The Council decided to distribute Christmas cheer throughout the Oasis of Jacksonville.

The Toy Drive was held from December 1-10.

The goal was to deliver Christmas goodies to at least 100 children. Not only was the goal reached, but it was also exceeded. The Council targeted partner agencies to pursue this endeavor. The Hubbard House is a certified domestic violence center that provides a safe place, encouraging social change for victims of domestic violence and their children. Sulzbacher Village empowers homeless and at-risk women, children, and men through health and housing, restoring hope and self-sufficiency. Also, there were several local daycare centers that donated toys to the children.

A special thanks to the following members of the Council for their diligence, dedication and support, making the Council’s goal a reality. Online shopping was conducted by Council Vice President, Past Potentate Raymond Richardson. He ensured CDC guidelines were followed. Honorary Past Potentate Tommie Mitchell safeguarded the toys, and Imperial Deputy of the Oasis, Past Potentate Danny Horton oversaw the assembling of the gift bags according to the specific requests of one of our partners. This endeavor would not have been possible without the financial support and toy donations provided by the Nobles of Rabia Temple No. 8.

Rabia Temple: Needs vs Duties Contributed by Alonzo Wilson Assistant Rabban Rabia Temple No. 8 Oasis of Jacksonville To be a servant leader is nothing less than revolutionary. As a member of this distinctive order, my ardent prayer is always for the prosperity of our PHAmily. Rabia Temple No. 8 and Rabia Court No. 25 are blessed to have many Nobles and Daughters possessing a long list of accomplishments which should be noted consistently. However, occasionally, you come across someone who stands out while in the presence of the greats.

One Friday night I arrived at the Temple for the Imperial Deputy of the Desert’s Official Visitation. As I proceeded to enter, I walked into a conversation in which a certain gentleman and Imperial Deputy of the Desert Pierre Rutledge were deeply engaged. The last thing I heard Deputy Rutledge say was, “DO SOMETHING!” The gentleman engaged in conversation with Deputy Rutledge was none other than Past Potentate Rickey Torrence, Sr. Torrence is best known throughout the Oasis of Jacksonville, Desert of Florida as well as his community for his philanthropy. My first introduction to this great man was in 2015 when I was a newly elected Worshipful Master. Not long after elections, I received a telephone call. It was him saying, “Worshipful Master, whatever you or the Lodge need, just call me!” Six years later, Torrence has been faithfully committed to those words. The unselfish care, concern and gentle correction that he extended to me and others are the consistent attributes that stay with me to this day.

The Rabia Family Registers Voters

at the Jacksonville Transportation Authority Terminal in downtown Jacksonville, Lonnie Miller Park, and the Calloway Cove Senior Living Facility. Our efforts continued until Election Day. Twice during the early voting period, the Rabia family provided transportation to voting locations throughout the city of Jacksonville. On Election Day, transportation was provided to the polls for residents of the Calloway Cove Community. In all, 37 citizens were registered to vote by the Rabia family.

As the November 3, 2020 General Election rapidly approached, Rabia Temple No. 8 and Rabia Court No. 25 expanded voter participation and registration efforts.

Initiating our efforts during the summer, we took advantage of the Juneteenth Celebration held at the Historic Ritz Theater and Museum located in downtown Jacksonville to register voters.

Beyond the Fez: Q&A with Deputy for the Oasis of Pompano Beach, Dosica Johnson, PC Contributed by Dt. Sharonda Johnson Saba Court No. 172 Pompano Beach, Florida As Saba Court’s Deputy for the Oasis, Dt. Johnson serves in an advisory capacity. She assists the Illustrious Commandress and the elected and appointed officers in perfecting the programs of the Imperial Court. Deputy Johnson also serves as the liaison between the Imperial Deputy for the Desert and the Court. She is a mentor to Saba Court Daughters and supports the Court with our various fundraisers and community services activities. I had the distinct honor of interviewing Deputy Johnson and learned more about why she became a member of this great organization. Please take a moment to learn about Saba Court No.172’s Deputy, Daughter Dosica Johnson, PC. Why did you want to become a Daughter?

I was invited by a Daughter who thought that this organization matched my character, as I have always been a community service-minded person.

What leadership positions have you held in Saba Court No.172?

Because of the membership numbers, I was on a fast track in the line-up. My first election in December 2003, I was elected to the position of High Priestess and served two years. I was appointed First Lieutenant Commandress in February 2005 and in September 2005 in a special election, I was elected as the First Lieutenant Commandress and served one year. In December 2006, I was elected as the Illustrious Commandress and served two years.

How did you become the Deputy for the Oasis for Saba Court No.172?

I was recommended by the sitting Deputy for the Desert of Florida, HPIC Rosa M. McGill (117). In December 2015, I received my appointment from our 45th Imperial Commandress, Dt. Alicia J. Chisolm (43).

Do you have any mentors within the organization?

I have had many mentors through the years: HPIC Rosa M. McGill (117), HPIC Alice West (70), HPIC Juanita Evans (117) and my most impressive mentor who always had an open mind and door to all my questions and concerns (big or small), is our 40th Imperial Commandress, Dt. Charlie Powell Albury (117). During Imperial Commandress Albury’s term in office, I volunteered in the Imperial Satellite Miami Office under the leadership of Dt. Juanita Evans. I received first-hand knowledge from both Imperial Commandress Albury and Dt. Evans about the Daughters’ Constitution Laws and By-Laws and the unwritten laws. I learned from the best! I was also afforded the opportunity to serve as treasurer of Imperial Commandress Albury’s Booster Club. I volunteered for two years in the Deputies’ Sign-In Room at the 2005 and 2006 Imperial Sessions.

Do you belong to any other Masonic Houses? If so, which ones?

I belong to Golden Victor Chapter #44, OES; Saint Joseph Assembly #275, OGC; Lenora Goff Court #120, HOJ and Elisha Court #6, LOCOP. 50

What are your hobbies outside of the organization? As an active retiree, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and traveling (but this is on hold for now). What advice would you give to anyone who would like to become a Daughter?

I would caution them not to compare this organization to any other female group they may be involved with but to be willing to learn our laws and regulations. In short, Saba Court No. 172 is very fortunate to have Deputy Dosica Johnson serve as the Court’s Deputy for the Oasis. She provides her beloved Court with excellent leadership training and encourages all of the members to be the best Daughters they can be!
