What else can I do to give back to my community? How can I help my neighbors? How can I assist some parent who is struggling to provide for their little ones? These are the questions I asked myself, as I pondered how I could make a difference in the lives of others. In 2015, I noticed children in my neighborhood walking to school or huddling at their school bus stops on cold mornings. I wondered why these kids were not dressed properly for the weather.

That’s when the idea for the Give A Kid a Coat Foundation, Inc., was born -- and it has made all the difference. By December of 2015, with the help of contributions, I distributed 64 coats to homeless children in four Seminole County Schools. Truly, this warmed my heart to see the smiles of appreciation from this gift of love. This small act energized my willingness to do even more! We have taken for granted that the “Sunshine State” is not always sunny anymore. As we embrace this era of climate change, we have had to move with the times. I also knew that living in Florida, there was not a need to have winter clothes, much less a coat!

As founder and CEO of this 501c3 nonprofit organization, over the past five years I have been able to give over 500 coats to needy kids. Give A Kid a Coat has received countless donations from businesses, community groups and individuals. Most recently, I was recognized by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ Faith and Community-Based Initiative for work in the community through this foundation. I truly believe I am making an impact to make a difference! If I can help somebody as I pass along then my living shall not be in vain.
