COVID-19 Contributed by Dt. Karen Young Kirksey, PC Ahmed Court No. 134 Tallahassee, Fla The Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19 has been a household word since the beginning of the year. In Florida, when schools were closed, businesses shuttered and employees laid off in record numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were some workers who did not have the option to “stay at home.” They are the frontline workers—and numerous Desert of Florida Nobles and Daughters are among them.

Deputy of the Desert Pierre E. Rutledge, HPIP (149) and Deputy for the Desert Dt. Collette Hart Wallace, PC (117) took the month of May to honor those Nobles and Daughters daily, on the DOF Prince Hall Shriners’ Facebook page. “The Desert of Florida on the Frontline,” was an opportunity to publicly say “thank you” and show appreciation for their outstanding service and sacrifice.

Those featured include health care professionals, first responders and corrections personnel. All are pictured on the Florida map on the cover of this magazine.

With no end in sight for the COVID-19 pandemic and the Sunshine State emerging as an epicenter of the virus, these brave Nobles and Daughters are still working the frontline. They go to work, so the most vulnerable of Florida’s citizens can be safe during the crisis.

COVID-19, Social Injustices and Mental Health Contributed by IP Marvin Hughley Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor Safia Temple No. 188 Panama City, Fla. Our society has taken on many changes through the years. Here we are, halfway through 2020 and we have had to adjust our daily life as we know it. COVID-19 has had a tremendous effect on every aspect of our existence. While restrictions are being relaxed in certain areas and people are returning to some type of normalcy, I must caution you to continue to focus on your Mental Health.

The results of COVID-19 have caused anxiety, depression, excessive drinking, and other abnormal behaviors. I would like to reference Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which implies that if our human basic needs are not being met then we cannot progress in our journey to self-actualization. Some of these basic needs include food, water, shelter, and security. With the presence of COVID-19 and other environmental stressors, some have had difficulty in meeting these needs. Unemployment, financial difficulties, mistrust of government to meet our needs and the fear associated with one of our family members or even ourselves contracting COVID- 19 can cause excessive worry, racing thoughts, agitation, and anger.

Some questions you might be asking yourself now are: 1. Is it safe for me to leave my house?

2. How can I protect myself and my family?

3. What resources do I have at my disposal?

These questions and many others can cause you to feel hopeless and helpless. This can be a common theme associated with the COVID-19 experience. Some may find it difficult to manage their emotional self-care at this time. In addition to COVID-19, millions of people across the nation are protesting about the social injustices that include the killing of unarmed African Americans and police brutality. For many, the images of these killings coupled with the blatant disregard for human life can trigger years of historical or transgenerational trauma. Our ancestors were exposed to trauma via slavery, racism, and years of oppression. Some have experienced this type of trauma firsthand and for others these experiences may have been passed on by your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and others. I challenge you to assess yourself and your emotions. There are difficulties with being triggered emotionally and not being able to properly regulate your emotions. This can result in disastrous consequences. Be attentive to your feelings and emotions. Your emotions are like indicators on your vehicle. For instance, your car will alert you as to when to check your engine, how fast you are driving, and when you need to change your oil.

Your emotions are indicating that something is occurring within you. It is imperative to pay attention to these feelings and emotions. Show yourself some compassion while understanding your own vulnerabilities.

Here are a few strategies to help manage your emotional responses: 1. Be flexible with yourself and your thoughts. We are all adjusting. Part of making these adjustments means that we must be flexible in our thinking and not be so rigid.

2. Being strong does not mean suppressing and avoiding your emotions. It is exactly the opposite. Being strong includes recognizing how you feel, understanding why you are feeling that way, and expressing your feelings to others.

3. Utilize your support system... family, friends, and your fellow Nobles and Daughters. Connecting with others is extremely important. Be aware of isolation and self-defeating behaviors. Connect with others via phone, email and social media.

4. Grounding techniques are particularly important. The focus of these strategies is to keep you in the here and now. You cannot go back and change anything that happened yesterday, and you cannot worry excessively about the future. Grounding techniques focus on remaining in the present. Some simple grounding strategies include putting warm or cold water on your face, having an object you can move around in your hand such as keys, a stone, or stress ball, and having a safety statement for example, “I will get through this!”

5. Balance things out- Make sure that you take time out to relax, do things that you enjoy, detach from your daily stressors. This allows you time to recharge your battery and function at your best!

We all are trying to find some type of normalcy in our life. The Nobles and Daughters in the Desert of Florida are part of the solution in our communities. You are all leaders who have stepped up in times of need. Your selfless service to others has been the backbone of our organization. We are not immune to Mental Health Symptoms related to COVID-19, Social Injustices, or any other situation. These stressors affect each of us. Mental Wellness 101-- Tips for Coping in These Times Contributed by Dt. Erika Banks Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor Rabia Court No. 25 Jacksonville, Fla In times past, we may not have given much thought to our own MENTAL HEALTH. Even when someone asks, “Are you ok?” “No, no I’m not ok,” is what you may want to say.

But, because we have been taught that discussing our mental health concerns are taboo, we just smile and say, “Yes, I’m fine.”

With all that is happening in Our World as we know it, mental health has become more of a focus. WE have to ensure WE care for ourselves, BEFORE WE can care for others. The way we live our lives today puts an immense mental strain on us, so we need to identify ways to help our minds cope with stressors and the pressure we may receive from others.

Here are 10 simple things that you can do to help improve your mental health: 1. Limit caffeine intake.

2. Develop a regular sleep pattern; go to bed on time.

3. Engage in exercise and get some SUN. 4. Eat regularly and healthy.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

6. Spend time with friends; open up to someone.

7. Remember you need to take breaks from the daily stress.

8. Don’t bottle up your emotions; begin a Journal.

9. Understand the power of perception; SPEAK positivity into your life.

10. Do things at your own pace and do the things that will make you happy.

The Impact of Covid-19 On People Living With Diabetes Contributed by HPIP Dr. Otis W. Kirksey Director, National Diabetes Initiative Ahmed Temple No. 37 Tallahassee, Fla. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted from an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. The disease is 10 times more lethal than the common flu and is characterized by symptoms that include: cough, fever, headache, new loss of taste or smell, repeated shaking with chills, sore throat, shortness of breath and muscle pain.

There have been over six million people infected with COVID-19 in the United States and more than 185,000 deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at significantly high risk for experiencing more severe complications resulting from COVID-19 infection. People living with diabetes, particularly poorly controlled diabetes, are a part of this high-risk group. The following are some important key points and recommendations people living with diabetes should consider regarding COVID-19: 1.

People with diabetes experience higher glucose levels than normal during infections whether viral or bacterial. This is primarily due to hormones released when the body is under stress. Therefore, it is critical to keep a close watch on glucose levels through regular monitoring. Patients experiencing two or more high glucose readings (240 mg/dl or higher) should monitor for ketones. If medium to large ketones are measured, patients should contact their primary care provider immediately.

Patients should continue to take their diabetes medications, even when experiencing decreased appetite unless otherwise instructed by their primary care provider.

Meal replacement shakes, such as GlucernaÂŽ, can provide essential nutrition and serve as replacements for skipped meals. Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids (with low carbohydrate content) such as PedialyteÂŽ for Adults to avoid dehydration.

Many of the over the counter medications used for symptomatic relief (runny nose, congestion, cough) can increase glucose levels as well as increase blood pressure. Patients should always consult with their pharmacist or their primary care provider to identify the appropriate medications for their medical conditions.

According to the American Diabetes Association, there is no current risk of interruption of the insulin supply chain. However, patients should request a 90-day supply for prescription refills for medications for diabetes and other chronic diseases. Those patients enrolled in Medicare may soon experience a reduction in their co-pay costs for their monthly insulin supply. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently struck a deal with drug manufacturers to limit the monthly co-pay for insulin to $35. This should impact one in three people enrolled in Medicare who have diabetes.

The above are general recommendations. Managing Your Finances During the Pandemic Contributed by Dt. Tara Y. Davis Ahmed Court No. 134 Tallahassee, Fla. Most of the time, people do not know in advance they are going to lose their job. The news often comes as a complete and unwelcome surprise. As the COVID-19 Coronavirus continues to spread around the State of Florida and across the United States, staying healthy is a top priority. At the same time, having a monthly budget for the long term can help if you are experiencing tough financial times now and if you anticipate a loss of income soon. Reviewing your family budget should be a critical part of your COVID-19 response strategy.

Revise Your Budget If you’re facing a job loss and don’t have a monthly budget for your household, make a household budget immediately. And if your current budget is based on your previous income, go through and analyze your expenses based on your new situation. Cutting costs can make getting through the current financial situation less stressful. Before you can do that, you first need to understand where and how you are spending money.

Compare your expenses to your income. If your expenses are higher than your income, then look at adjusting your spending down to only the “essentials” – food, housing, utilities and transportation. If you are in disaster or emergency budgeting mode, prioritizing your expenses matters. Paying the rent or mortgage and keeping the utilities on should take precedence over buying clothes or dining out several times a week.

Trim whatever you can from your spending. Some other ideas to save money on a tight budget include: • Cancel cable and watch TV online.

• Cancel lawn services and trips to the dry cleaners.

• Raise your car and home insurance deductibles to lower your monthly premiums.

• Cancel subscriptions: magazines, gym memberships or subscription boxes.

• Keep the air conditioning turned off or the heat turned down to save money on utilities.

• Keep lights turned off as much as possible to save money on your electric bill.

If you are worried you are going to be unable to pay for essential services such as electric, Internet, gas, or water during the current pandemic, call your provider and explain your situation. Many cities and private companies are halting service interruption due to nonpayment, waiving late fees, offering flexible payment plans, or even delaying payments altogether.

Keep the lines of communication open and remember, you will get through it.

Prioritizing Debt: Which Bills do I Pay First?

Food and Medicine The most important thing is your health and well-being. Take care of yourself first, then move on to the other priorities. Food, medicine, soap, and paper products are up there with shelter, heat, and hot water on the list of essentials.

Plan your meals for the week, make a list of the items you need, and go to the store once. The more you go to the store, the more likely you are to buy things you do not need.

Also depending on your income, you may qualify for financial assistance with groceries. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, (aka SNAP, food stamps) helps to cover the cost of groceries for people with income below certain thresholds.

Mortgage or Rent Keeping up with your housing payments is a must if you want to stay in your home. When money is tight and you are not sure you can pull together enough to make a payment one month, the best thing to do is talk to your landlord or lender. Many mortgage lenders have programs in place to help homeowners who are facing financial hardship. Your lender can review your options, such as forbearance or a loan modification. Forbearance means you do not make payments for a set period. Loan modification or refinance can lower the amount of your monthly payments.

If you are a renter in the state of Florida, currently there is a moratorium on evictions and mortgage foreclosures.

Most landlords will work with you if they are being kept informed about your financial situation -- because from a business standpoint, it is best for a landlord to work with an existing tenant.

You can help your situation by suggesting a payment plan based on what you can afford. If you cannot pay the full amount of your rent, tell the landlord what you can pay and when you return to full-time employment, have a plan to make up the difference. For example, you can add an extra $100 to future rent payments until you can pay off the owed balance.

Utilities After your mortgage or rent payment, the next most important bills are your utility bills: gas, water and sewage, and electricity. Fortunately, there are programs that exist to help people who need emergency financial assistance with paying the utilities. The first place to start is your local utility provider.

They may have their own programs to help people who need assistance.

Many utility companies can refer you to local energy assistance programs run by the government or local charities.

Car Loan & Insurance If you have a car loan, it’s important to find a way to pay it each month. Just as you can call your mortgage company to work out a deal, you can call the lender that has your car loan to see if you can come to an agreement. Like mortgage companies, these lenders can also offer you loan modifications, refinancing, or forbearance. Loan modification or refinancing can lower the amount of your monthly payments, making it easier for you to afford the car. If you don’t have a car loan but you have a luxury vehicle, consider selling this vehicle and use the proceeds to purchase a less expensive model car so you won’t have to worry about expensive maintenance or repair bills. Car insurance is also very important. Florida law requires all car owners to have insurance. If you do not have insurance and are in an accident, your driver’s license may be suspended. If you must drive, do not let your car insurance lapse.

Phone Service While you do need your phone to stay connected, you most likely do not need the most expensive cellphone plan, with multiple phone lines. Shop around and compare prices to see if you can get a better deal on your ser-

vice. If you cannot get the cell phone provider to work with your situation, then purchase a “pay as go” phone until your situation improves.

NO LAUGHING MATTER ”Giggles” Rewards Essential Workers

Contributed by Dt. Collette Hart Wallace Imp. Deputy for the Desert of Florida Kazah Court No. 117 Miami, Fla Dt. Robin Davis, PC is the Deputy Imperial Directress for the Imperial Clown Department. But, when it comes to service, she doesn’t clown around.

She is a Past Commandress of Kazah Court No. 117 in Miami, Florida; and because she smiles so much, she was nicknamed Giggles. Although she’s called Giggles, her bright smile slowly began to fade as she learned more about the crisis that had turned into the COVID-19 pandemic. She felt blessed that she could continue educating students from home, but she was deeply concerned about the safety of frontline workers who were obligated to work in public. Giggles thought to herself, “What can I do to help?” In return, she wanted to show her appreciation to them. But, by this time, a stay-at-home order was in effect and there wasn’t much she could do. Somehow, she figured out how to safely help from her home. Thus, the Essential Worker Lunch Give-Away was born.

The initial plan was simple. She would treat an Essential Worker to lunch. In order to decide who to bless with a free lunch, Dt. Davis held a Facebook Live raffle for 45 deserving essential workers from all over the country. Unfortunately, she had only planned for one winner. But, before the drawing was over, donations started to pour in.

By the end of the drawing, she was blessed with enough donations to provide free lunches for all 45 participants. It was evident that several Nobles and Daughters were thinking like Giggles, “We too can laugh, spread joy, and stay safe until we meet again!” PC Dt. Robin Davis and several of her friends in the Masonic family made it possible to do lunch drawings every Wednesday in April and May. Those friends are: Imperial Deputy for the Desert of Florida, PC Dt. Collette Hart Wallace, Illustrious Commandress of Kazah Court No. 117, Dt. Rosemary Bridges, PC Dt. Adrienne Ferguson, PC Dt. Presents Virtual Gala Day 2020 The Desert of Florida

launched its “Virtual Gala Day 2020” celebration via Zoom on Saturday, May 30 at 8:00 p.m. Our world has been undeniably altered by the COVID-19 Coronavirus; however, as we weathered this storm, we wanted to keep the Desert looking forward by honoring our Deputy of the Desert HPIP Pierre E. Rutledge (149) and Deputy for the Desert Dt. Collette Hart Wallace, PC (117) for their leadership and work in our communities.

In fact, the originator of this brilliant and memorable idea was Dt. Mechelle Martin, PC (117) and the Desert Media Department, under the leadership of PP James Alexander (63). Awesome!

Meanwhile, over 230 Nobles and Daughters participated in this historical event in the Desert of Florida, including several Imperial Court and Imperial Council Elected Officers: The 47th Imperial Commandress, Dt. Jacqualine Brown Arradondo (22), Imperial 2nd Lt. Commandress, Dt. Karen Wright-Chisolm (128), Imperial 1st Ceremonial Daughter, Dt. Cheryl R. Eggleston (23), Imperial Outside Spy, Dt. Arlana Miller-Brown(32); the 43rd Imperial Potentate, Rev. Charles W. Davenport (125), Deputy Imperial Potentate, John T. Chapman (1), Imperial Chief Rabban, The Honorable Eric R. Once remarks were made by Desert temples, courts, invited dignitaries and via open mic, that’s when the party got started with a live DJ Noble K. D. Morley, of Ahmed Temple No. 37. Played a mixture of “Old School” and “New School” jams. We had lots of singing and dancing the night away -- virtually. Most importantly, we all had some good Florida-style fun. It was great to see each other live on Zoom after being apart for a long period of time.

Let’s Get Social!

Therefore, is so important for Temples and Courts to create a social ecosystem that allows you to get in front of the people who find your cause worthy of their support. If this were not enough to convince you, here are a few more reasons you should seriously consider putting more into your online presence than you ever have before.

Reason 1: Creating campaigns on social media can reach your target audience cheaper and faster than ever before. People would rather crowdfund by clicking on links than purchase physical raffle tickets, etc.

For example, Omaze, a phenomenally successful company, offers great prizes via a raffle system where people can donate to different nonprofits. Collaborations are the key to success.

Reason 2:

Can you say everyone on my social media pages knows that I am part of this organization? Do they know that I am a Noble or a Daughter? If the answer is no, then you are eliminating your greatest asset from assisting you in fundraising. If your friends, see you supporting a fundraiser they are more likely to donate to it as well. Want proof? The social media platform known as Facebook does this every time your birthday comes around. It asks you to pick a nonprofit to donate to and will post on your page that you are soliciting donations for your charity of choice. If everyone raised $250 on their individual platforms through their friends list twice a year our ability to provide meaningful scholarships would increase a thousand fold.

Reason 3:

Increase your community of supporters. Selling tickets now becomes easier as people know who you are and what you are doing in the community. The support you will receive will skyrocket. Now that you are recognized in the community, it will open more doors than you realize. Influencers now become part of your ecosystem as they help you spread the word.

In short, Social Media can be your greatest ally in building your nonprofit’s brand, but it is up to you to embrace it. Continue to follow the Desert of Florida as we create an ecosystem that taps into social capital in a way our organization has never seen before.

The talent in the Desert of Florida is vast and full of leaders in every aspect of society, with many falling into the category of Entrepreneur. Although some have made known what companies they own, there are many who feel that there is no vehicle to promote their businesses in a meaningful way to the membership.

How do we bridge the gap? How do we create a Green Book for the Desert while offering support to the same business owners? This is how Oasis Network of Entrepreneurs was born. O.N.E. is a group that serves as a support system for entrepreneurs in the Desert. We have created and are set to release a list of seminars that will help business owners enhance their offerings and more. The group will also feature live seminars that address current topics affecting businesses while offering a quick consultation on your business.

The group was created by Entrepreneurs, Business Consultants, Government Buyers, Publicists/Community Relations Professionals and Executives -members of the Desert looking to share their experiences in a meaningful way. Why is this important?

Minority entrepreneurs face a myriad of challenges daily in running and growing their businesses. Here are few that you as an entrepreneur may be dealing with: Access to Capital During the Pandemic. Access to the Paycheck Protection Program meant having to wait until a second round of funding while depleting your savings in a bid to stay open.

This is in addition to the fact that historically we have found it difficult to gain access to capital could mean success or failure. According to the Minority Business Development Agency, minority-owned businesses are less likely to get loans than non-minority owners. This is particularly true for businesses that have less than $500,000 in gross receipts. They are also likely to get half of what their counterparts will receive in a business loan and pay a higher interest rate.

Social Capital. Social Capital refers to the introductions, networks, mentors, and professional partners needed to take a company from six figures to seven. Lack of social capital is detrimental to building a business. Minority Business Owners lack the ability to have social capital but O.N.E. is set to change that.

Capital Fears. Although the list continues for what is missing from our toolbox for entrepreneurs, the one thing that stands out in our community is fear. Fear comes in many forms whether it is asking for help, seeking funding, or basically sharing an idea that you believe someone will steal. To be successful, you must overcome these fears and allow others to help as needed. This group is for business owners, LLCs, Sole Proprietors, etc., recognized by their states as such, looking for growth and discovering multiple streams of revenue. “Now What?”

A Business Leader’s Guide to Community Involvement Contributed by Dt. Andrea Williams Rabia Court No. 25 Jacksonville, Fla. If you are like most of the world, you have been consumed by the events of our community since the start of 2020. From the spread of Covid-19 to the current murders of innocent African American people in this country, business leaders have faced countless moments in which it was critical to evaluate the way business is done.

Many of you have sprung into action to make internal and external statements about the wellbeing of employees, friends and families, addressed food insecurities with drive-by food pickups, and have participated in countless virtual reading activities for our children.

Just like every other major event in our nation’s history and abroad, there is life on the other side of chaos. How will we all pick up the pieces of our communities and businesses and move on? While you or other industry colleagues you know may have significant financial burdens to overcome, one thing will be certain, positively positioning yourself as a good community steward will be critical. People will remember how both you and your company treated them during this time. Magic Johnson was quoted as saying “Philanthropy is the cornerstone of a robust brand.” He’s not spouting those words just because it is the right thing to say, he is giving you the cheat code by telling you philanthropy is of significant importance if you would like for your brand to be successful. Cornerstones have historical relevance; they are a major part of some of our most treasured edifices. The same should be said for the charitable efforts of your company. My goal is to do my part to make sure those around me are successful, so if you have never put any focus on community relations/engagement, I have some helpful tips for you. This is not an end all be all document for community engagement, but it will give you the tools to start the conversation.

EducateOne of the most daunting questions, no matter what aspect of life, can be “Where do I start?” There is no question, trying to figure out where to start with your company’s community engagement plan can be the most difficult part. Be confident in knowing that deciding to have a community relations plan is an integral first step. Outside of acknowledgement, you must be ready to educate yourself. Take the time to invest in your knowledge to make sure that you are doing what is best for you and your company. If you have had your nose in the dirt and have taken your finger off the pulse of the community, it is time to come up for air and check the pulse. Figure out what the issues are. Is your primary consumer demographic dealing with a specific issue? If your primary consumer demographic is different from the demographic that lives in the neighborhood that your business resides in, what are the issues your neighbors are dealing with? Take a few moments to put some thought into these questions.

Doing so can really help guide you along your way, help you make sure you are staying true to your business’s core 18

values. No one knows your product quite like you; no one has more passion about it than you. It may be time to think through your product’s impact on the community in which your business is located. How do the people in your business’s neighborhood view you? How do they view your business? If you have no idea, it may be time to start asking those questions. My experience is through the lens of professional sports. Our primary demographic is families, more specifically women. When we are thinking about the issues of our community, we cannot forget about women. Focusing on women and families’ issues is directly related to the group of people we serve. Lastly, take some time to invest in educating yourself about your staff. Sure, you know their names, perhaps a little about their families, but what causes are affecting them, what causes are they personally connected to? What community passions do they have?

Again, this information will help guide your business decisions down the line. An example, considering current affairs, non-African American business leaders with African American employees may want to take the time to educate themselves about their employees. Aside from making sure they are functioning okay emotionally in the workplace (whew…. we are tired y’all), employers could recognize there may be an opportunity for community engagement brewing in the minds of their employees. Ask them -- get your employees engaged. Just as you would consult with employees about new sales strategies, consult with them about your engagement efforts. You never know what valuable information may come out of a simple conversation or survey.

tinue to develop and implement your plan. Start small -- this is not the time to cast your net and see what you can catch. Take your time, be strategic and do one or two things extremely well before you expand. Remember the adage, “You can’t eat an elephant in one sitting.”

Make sure you are sticking to what you do best. It is easy to separate yourself from your company’s mission here. What is your company’s mission statement? What is your product? You do not want to stray too far from what you know. For instance, if you sell shoes, you may not want to start with a focus on food insecurity. Food insecurity is a very worthy cause, but your area of expertise is shoes. Perhaps you may want to address the issue of safe footwear for an underserved population or pedestrian safety in your company’s neighborhood. You also do not have to recreate the wheel. See if there are local organizations in your community that are already addressing this issue. If there are, properly vet them and explore partnership with them. It is much easier to see how you can help existing efforts than to create an entire program and execute from idea to implementation.

See where your organization can fit in. Many businesses fall short here because they think all organizations want is financial support. This could not be further from the truth. Yes, nonprofits always need to keep the lights on, but there are other ways to assist. Have you ever heard of the statement, “Give someone or something your time, talent, and treasure?” There is a reason treasure comes last. Writing checks are good; they give you a nice pretty tax write-off at the end of the year and gets your name on the back of a multitude of 5K t-shirts, but that is not truly investing in your community. What kind of time did you put into your community? How did you leverage your talents? How did you leverage your network’s talents? A conversation with the local organization may reveal they simply need people to work a registration desk at an upcoming event. You will notice your larger corporations are able to write checks and that is always appreciated, however, if you take a closer look you will notice teams of employees wearing company shirts.

Their employer has offered additional hands to get the job done in addition to the financial contribution. The bottom line is this, a check is helpful, but it just will not suffice by itself. Create a robust plan and execute it. That is the benefit of not biting off more than you can chew.

through what you did. Was it beneficial to both you and the community? You want to make sure you are not overextending yourself or your staff. After all, you still have a business to run. Evaluate the partnership with the nonprofit. Were they easy to work with? Was their ask of you reasonable? Did they communicate well? You want to be able to do good works in the community, but unless you are dedicating someone to do this full time (i.e. hiring a full time community relations professional), you cannot dedicate full time hours to it. It must be something you contribute to, not something you are fully executing. I want to stress here, it is ok to accept opportunities for positive public relations. Consumers utilize brands they feel are invested in the community; you just do not want to seem exploitive. For goodness sake, do not spend time taking selfies with homeless people or impoverished children to show how invested you are in your community. It is tacky and inconsiderate. It is, however, okay to utilize your company’s social media to highlight the event and your company’s involvement. Once you have evaluated the event, you can decide how often you would like to engage. The current trend is year-long partnerships rather than one-off events. Therefore, it is important to have meaningful relationships with organizations so you can engage and mobilize throughout the year.

With so much going on in the world, many of you want to help, and some of you are unsure how to do that. I hope this answers your “Now what?” question. Use these steps to help guide your thought process on ways to be the most effective in your community. At the end of the day, if you are genuine in your approach you have a hard time doing something the “wrong way.” However, there is nothing wrong with having a skilled approach. I hope these tips are helpful. Now go out and be great! This is your chance to leverage your brand to do some good. Be a great community steward. Pour back into the community that has helped your business to be successful. The world needs you.

homever said that owning your own business or cultivating your own idea was easy… lied. Let me be the first to break that myth! Not only can it be difficult, many times it is downright hard and lonely and stressful, and did I say hard? Sleepless nights partnered with depleted funds partnered with being misunderstood partnered with self-doubt can be overwhelming. If you are not careful, it can also become unbearable. Yet, despite all these various things, it has its rewards.

One of the many reasons entrepreneurs and/or creatives become overwhelmed or uninspired is because we have the tendency to become distracted on the road to greatness. Many of us are still working a full-time job, while simultaneously launching multiple business ventures.

We have families and social and community responsibilities that we must balance, and yet The Creator has chosen us to establish something great. And that my friend, is where it all starts… “The Creator has chosen us!”

For such a time as this!

As a business owner, it is critically important that we always remember two things: 1) Whatever we do, we do it for other people and 2) The Creator has chosen us to establish something great. Now, this is not about a belief system or any religious practice; it is, however, to acknowledge the fact that all our talents, ideas, skills, and ability to do what we do comes from the Creator. Because He or She has chosen us simply means we have something great to give to the world. So…what if “you” have what it takes to change the world?

There may be many others who have the same idea, but always remember no one can do it like you! Find your personal niche and incorporate your own style and personality; and watch it develop!

Transform your view! The perception of your business matters the most. If you do not think it will work or if you do not think you can do it, no one else will either. Believe in yourself and change your perspective and opportunities will appear!

Be Intentional! Everything that you do, everything that you create and even the people that you work with, make sure that you are intentional regarding every aspect of your business. Sit, but don’t stall! Walk, but don’t run.

Become methodical about every move and every decision. It will pay off!

Find the Right Balance! All work and no play not only makes us dull; but it also makes us exhausted.

Spending time with family, friends and love ones is critical as you are working and developing your business. Being surrounded by those who love and support you can act as fuel to keep your fire burning. Self-Care is a priority…

Not an option! So, make sure you remember you!

With the country in a literal “lockdown,” due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of Rabia Temple No. 8 saw an opportunity to help those in need in Jacksonville. Led by our 46th Illustrious Potentate Demetrius Bruno, Rabia 8 Nobles planned and executed a community service project for the tenants of Calloway Cove Assisted Living Facility. In April, Nobles and Daughters of Rabia Court No. 25 set-up and distributed cleaning and personal hygiene supplies. We greeted residents with big smiles, open arms, and warm hearts. Following the event, the Nobles supported Illustrious Commandress Yvonne McKesson of Rabia Court No. 25 as she and the Daughters traveled to take supplies and visit the homes of some of the seasoned Daughters. We also did a drive-by wellness check on other Daughters filled with love and laughter.

In May, the Nobles delivered dinners to Past Potentate Russell Earl, H.P.P Arthur Mincey and the widow of Noble Henry Pate, who really appreciated the efforts but donated the supplies back to us for others less fortunate. The Nobles also dropped off meals to the widow of Noble Reggie Fields (No. 63) and H.P.I.P. Harold Walbey (No. 63).

Summary of Charitable Activities: The Nobles of Rabia Temple No. 8 continue to promote charity throughout the Oasis of Jacksonville. Since the COVID-19 “Lockdown” started in March, the Nobles have served the community in which we live as volunteers and with charitable donations.

Ahmed Temple No. 37 Improving the Brand

Attempting to capitalize on a historic 2019 Desert Conference and Gala Day, Illustrious Potentate Theodus Baker noted that weekend’s success provided a glimpse at Ahmed Temple’s talent and potential for greatness. Using it as a guide, he challenged the Nobility to determine Ahmed Temple’s brand for the foreseeable future. “It’s past time for Ahmed Temple # 37 to advance to the next level. With your permission, I’d like to invite someone to speak to us about getting there.” said Baker.

Felina Martin, Executive Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE), spoke to the members of Ahmed Temple # 37 on Saturday, February 1, 2020. She made it clear that she is no stranger to Prince Hall Shrinedom, having served as a consultant for the Prince Hall Shriners Foundation’s 3rd Annual Diabetes Classic in 2011. Martin added that she is familiar with Ahmed Temple’s mission and has seen its’ work in the local community. She gave an introductory PowerPoint presentation about her organization and the benefits of membership, which proved to be informative. Among the benefits offered by INIE: • Cross-sector networking, professional mentoring, peer to peer support • Resource sharing, access to funding databases • Participation in seminars and roundtables designed to further develop Ahmed Temple • Pro Bono legal support and advice At the close of her presentation, Martin stated her organization can assist Ahmed Temple #37 reach the next level. She opened the floor to questions from the Nobility and everyone’s questions to their satisfaction. After a meaningful discussion and debate, the membership voted for full membership in the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence.

Last year the Temple and Court held several events together, including community service at area food banks.

One of our many duties is to help local kids via our Shriners as Mentors program (SAM) led by SAM Program Director Noble Jermaine McKinney. We support youth through bi-weekly meetings where we discuss community service, leadership and compassion, trust, reliability, charitable donations, and any other issues that may be on their minds. At the beginning of 2020, our mentees took 2nd place in the Youth “Brain Bowl” at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach. They took second place in both the middle school and high school categories.

Beyond the Fez: Noble Jeremy “Groove” Blackwell Contributed by Noble Jeremy Blackwell Ancient City Temple No. 63 Daytona Beach, Fla. Noble Jeremy “Groove” Blackwell is Assistant Rabban of Ancient City Temple No. 63 in Daytona Beach. He also leads the “Superior Rated” Atlantic High School Band in Port Orange. Noble Blackwell has served as the Director of Bands and Instrumental Music for Atlantic High for seven years. Through consistency and dedication, the band program has grown from six members at the start, to over 70 members.

The Shark band has not only grown in size, but also in musicianship. The band program consists of marching, symphonic, and jazz bands, and a percussion ensemble. The Shark bands are well-known in the community and in competitions.

The drumline is back-to-back champion of the Tampa Drumline Competition.

Not only is the drumline a community favorite, but the marching and concert bands have gained recognition for their musical abilities as well. The marching band was one of 10 selected from across the United States and the Islands to participate in the 2019 Bethune-Cookman University Homecoming Showcase in Daytona Beach and the Florida Classic Battle of the Bands in Orlando.

The band program is a host of the Lakeside Jazz Festival. The Lakeside Jazz Festival is 501c3 that raises money for summer music camp scholarships for students who attend Atlantic and Spruce Creek high schools.

Noble Blackwell studied music education at “The Great” Bethune-Cookman University. He played trombone in the world-renowned Bethune Cookman University Marching Wildcats Band and served as a section leader and student director.

Osiris Temple No. 67 Nobles vs The Novel Coronavirus Contributed by IP Steve E. Primus Osiris Temple No. 67 Melbourne, Fla. The Year 2020 will be remembered for many things, and most of it will probably be negative: the closure of public schools throughout the nation and the cancellation of all major sports, including the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics. So, what is the big deal of rescheduling the Olympics? The only other times in history the Olympics did not occur on-time was in 1916 because of World War I and in 1940 and 1944 because of World War II. On the other hand, you know things are serious when all Disney resorts and Disneyland worldwide close their doors to the public, losing billions of dollars. If we are not at war, what could bring the world to a screeching halt? Let me introduce you to the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

The United States leads the world with COVID-19 cases and deaths. But what is so alarming, is that the virus is disproportionately affecting America’s people of color. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put some members of racial and ethnic minority groups at increased risk of getting COVID-19 or experiencing severe illness, regardless of age.”

However, some of the most resilient members of society -- not sports stars or movie stars, not billionaires or politicians; but your regular everyday Americans and others across the globe, are in the forefront combatting this deadly virus. Several members of Osiris Temple No. 67, in the Oasis of Melbourne, Desert of Florida, are among them!

Day after day, these Nobles take their lives into their hands when walking through the doors of their respective places of employment — and in some cases with little Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). In one of his White House briefings, Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s leading infectious disease expert, said that our health care workers are fighting a “war” with the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, things will get worse before they get better and casualties will reach unspeakable numbers amongst patients and health care professionals as well.

Not everyone can stay at home and be in quarantine. Many of our brothers and sisters are considered essentials workers and must leave the comfort of their homes and their loved ones and go out and face an enemy who has no fear! Osiris Temple No. 67 and Osiris Court No. 70 would like to extend a huge “thank-you” to both the Nobles and the Daughters for what they are doing in this crisis. Working a 12-hour shift is the norm for our members and they join millions of others across the country selflessly doing their part and, in many cases, their sacrifice goes unnoticed. Our members cover every imaginable profession you can think of and a short sample of their professions are listed, but there are so many more to thank: Delivery drivers, doctors, educators, corrections officers, EMTs, First Responders, grocery store employees, hospital staff, lawyers, lobbyists, military members, nurses, pharmacists, police, postal workers, restaurants workers, truck drivers, VA employees and many others!

I reached out to one such Noble who has been working deep in the trenches since the word Coronavirus became part of our everyday vocabulary-- Christian Tokwaulu. I asked him what makes him gets up every day and head to work knowing that if he is not careful, he could end up a patient in the place he works. He simply said to me, “Caring for our fellow men, and humanity is what we stand for. The concept of faith, hope and charity goes a long way, caring for God’s creation. It is my duty as a craftsman.” I was rendered speechless!

Noble Tokwaulu is a Registered Nurse (R.N.) who works at Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) and West Orange Nephrology in Orlando, Florida. He provides Hemodialysis Dialysis treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease patients. Since our world has been turned upside down, Noble Tokwaulu stated that like everyone else in the hospital, their workload has increased immensely, and he is basically on call 24/7. However, it is not the workload that has him stressed; it is the lack of family time. He said the impact of not seeing his family is devastating due to his demanding and exhausting work schedule.

Noble Tokwaulu echoed the sentiments of A.E.A.O.N.M.S. leadership of doing what we can to stop the spread of this disease, by doing the simple things. That includes following our local health departments’ recommendations and staying at home whenever possible. If you must venture out, wearing a mask and social distancing of six feet are a must. I am asking everyone to please reach out and touch someone—call your friends, neighbors, that person that you have not spoken to in a while and kept meaning to call. Please check on our older Nobles especially the ones who you have not seen to ensure they have everything that they need.

It is an honor to work with such dedicated and devoted Nobles who daily perform so many acts of kindness and bravery as shown by their willingness to be there for anyone in need regardless of the danger to themselves!

DOF Spotlight: Masud Temple No. 69 Contributed by IP William D. Wims Masud Temple No. 69 West Palm Beach, Fla. In December 2019, Masud Temple No. 69 elected new leadership to steer the Temple. The Nobles elected Noble William D. Wims as its Illustrious Potentate. According to IP Wims, his vision is simple – “for the Temple to improve upon itself -- which means that all Nobles must improve themselves as Prince Hall Shriners; not only to plan and execute the initiatives of the Imperial Council, but also our local initiatives and programs.”

Masud Temple ended the year by participating in Toys for Tots. They took time during the busy holiday season to assist with one of Palm Beach County’s largest holiday events by assembling and distributing toys as well as unloading trucks. The Marines collect new unwrapped toys for this event. The toys are given to less fortunate children in the area.

Our local Toys for Tots provides Christmas gifts for over 500 children each year. Children are able to come to a designated pickup station and choose from toys that are donated by area businesses. As Masud Temple wrapped up this community service project activity, we were discussing plans for our community service efforts for the 2020 year. Stay Tuned!

Masud Temple No. 69 Feeds Less Fortunate Contributed by IP William D. Wims Masud Temple No. 69 “In-kind hours are time we spend doing something for someone or giving back to communities at no monetary cost” Masud Temple No. 69, Oasis of West Palm Beach, Desert of Florida, is doing purposeful and intentional work by giving and sharing time with less fortunate men, women, and children. Earlier this year, the Nobles of Masud, along with the Daughters of Masud Court No. 71, fed homeless residents at St. George’s Center in Palm Beach County.

Nobles and Daughters worked together to cook and serve the meal. The Nobles also assisted with setting up the facility and cleanup afterwards. Since that time, Masud Temple has committed to partnering with St. George’s every fifth Wednesday.

We all receive a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment while serving our local community. At the end of the day, we reflect on the colors red, green and yellow, which bid us to continue along the path which is the will of God.

Sustaining Communites in the Midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic: Kazah Nobles and Daughters host Food Distribution Drive in Opa-Locka, Fla. Contributed by Noble Leslie Elus Kazah Temple No. 149 Miami, Fla.

n April 29, 2020, Kazah Temple No.149, Kazah Court No.117, Ark of the City, and Farm Share partnered with the City of Opa-Locka to host a food distribution event.

Local residents received food packages that could feed a family of four. The packages contained milk, bread, poultry, canned goods, and assorted fresh fruits and vegetables at no cost. Over 500 packages were distributed to families in North Miami Dade County and over 2,048 meals were donated to the residents.

Event volunteers included local politicians such as, Alvin Burke, Commissioner of the City of Opa-Locka and Councilwoman Lisa Davis of the City of Miami Gardens. HPIP Pierre E. Rutledge, Imperial Deputy of the Desert of Florida reminded Nobles in attendance of their “moral obligation as Shriners to give back to our community in times of need.”

Noble Hiram Williams, Illustrious Potentate of Kazah Temple No.149 told attendees that:

“As Shriners, we are about giving back to the community. At a time like this, everybody needs help with something, no matter how big or small ... that’s what we do.”

Beyond the Fez: HPIP Ronnie Cole Haggai Temple No. 182, Desert Imperial Organizer The Desert of Florida holds the unique distinction of being the first in the Domain to sail uncharted waters. Consistently, members of the Desert provide service that exceeds their titles and positions. HPIP Ronnie Cole is an example of such a member. He is one of many Nobles and Daughters who continually work for the greater good of the Order and its local communities.

In 2011, Cole was elected as the Desert of Florida Imperial Organizer.

He supports the Imperial Deputy of the Desert with Temple and Court issues. He has served on the Desert Lecturer & Facilitator team since 2013, developing presentations for the Annual Desert Leadership Forum. For the past three years, Cole has served as Imperial Deputy of the Student Aid Department. He reviews over 40 scholarship applications annually from students all over the Domain, to ensure timely submissions of $1000.00 awards to selected high school seniors from each Desert. In 2009 and 2015, Cole was selected as the Desert of Florida’s Shriner of the Year. In 2012, he was selected as Mentor of the Year by the Imperial Council for developing the first Shriners As Mentors program in the Domain.

Cole has a strong belief in family values, giving to those less fortunate, and a sense of community service as a Navy Veteran of 20 years.

Pensacola has been home since 1991 to Cole and his wife of 35 years, Maria. In 2007, He graduated from Troy State University with a BS in Criminal Justice. Cole currently works for the Department of Defense (DOD) as a Civilian Instructor at the Information Warfare Training Center, teaching Cryptologic Maintenance to active-duty service members. He chaired the Command Multi-Cultural Diversity Festival which provided education and training to the more than 1,500 joint services active duty military. Cole has also received numerous awards for service to the least fortunate of the Pensacola community. In 2016, his volunteerism was featured on BLAB TV’s Veterans Still Serving Program. He is also a member of the Chariots of Pensacola Motorcycle Club and serves as the club’s Public Relations Officer. Cole also served for two years as a community Shrine representative on the Visit Pensacola Tourism Board.

While proudly serving as a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, Cole is an avid supporter of Pensacola’s social and civic activities. He initiated the, “What’s Happening In Pensacola” monthly events calendar and has shared local activities by email to hundreds of followers for the past ten 38

years. For over seven years, Cole and his wife have spent Sunday evenings sponsoring the popular Pensacola social event, “Soulful Sundays,” a gathering which allows various civic organizations to dance, network, mix and mingle while enjoying quality entertainment. Cole uses this party with a purpose as a charitable fundraising endeavor and partners with other community service organizations to raise hundreds of dollars annually for Diabetes, Breast Cancer, and Alzheimer’s charities.

He was recognized by the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department for providing over $4,000 in funds for improvements to the seniors’ recreation facility at no cost to the city. Cole was one of eight residents of the Pensacola community honored as a local hero who carries the torch of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy by making a difference in the lives of others. He and his wife Maria’s family includes three children, seven grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. Cole credits his entire outlook on life to the examples set by his parents and the kind and loving ways of his wife.

According to Greek philosopher Heraclitus, change is the only constant in life. As the 2019- 2020 closed, we have witnessed the quickening pace of change. The end of the school year signals the completion of a grade, graduation, and the unofficial start of summer. This year was much different. The 2019-2020 school year included virtual learning for students as early as kindergarten and virtual graduations because of COVID-19. Many parents with school-aged children quickly assumed new roles in the educational system as our children attended virtual school. Among the roles included IT support staff preparing students for online school; classroom monitor, keeping students on task; cafeteria worker, preparing meals, and PE coach. As we struggle to define the new normal, we discover the new normal is constant change.

We celebrate Saba Temple No. 186 Nobles working on the frontline in education and training, preparing others for the challenges ahead. Nobles exceeded regular duties in their chosen professions to provide aid. They delivered computers

Safia Temple No. 188 Helps Food Bank Post-Hurricane Michael Contributed by IP Marvin Hughley Safia Temple No. 188 Panama City, Fla. Since September 2019, Safia Temple No. 188 has volunteered 28 hours each month serving the community at the 2nd Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Food Bank in Bay County, Florida. The volunteerism began because of Hurricane Michael.

On October 10, 2018, the sleepy town of Panama City was plush with pine and oak forests, so thick nearly every street had a canopy of shade for relaxing with a cold Mason jar of sweet tea. A storm was predicted a few days earlier. That storm became the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the contiguous United States since Andrew, in 1992. As a result, nearly every home and business suffered 30 to 80 percent structural damage. Citizens were displaced, hospitals shut down except for some emergency services, grocery stores had limited supplies and hours, drugstores resorted to temporary trailers and tents, power lines and trees covered the streets.

One year later, the landscape was scarred with vacant lots where homes once stood. Many residents could not wait a year for housing or apartment markets to recover, so they relocated to support their families.

In the vein of perseverance and uplift, the Food Bank began distributing food each week. The demand for sustenance was so great, its days of operation increased to three days a week. One day, Food Bank Director Toni Gainer asked Noble Byron Calton to help volunteer and has Calton has continues to serve.

The Food Bank feeds more than 500 families each month. Pastor Rev. Rawls Leslie said it best, “Sometimes all you need is two trailers, a little faith, and a whole lot of love.”

DOF Spotlight: Idris Temple No. 239 Contributed by Noble Alex Gonzalez Idris Temple No. 239 Crestview/Fort Walton Beach, Fla. The Nobles of Idris Temple No. 239, led by Illustrious Potentate Travis Greenwood, are a necessary pillar in the Fort Walton Beach community.

We have participated in several community-based events this year. Although COVID-19 has put a wrench in the “machine of life,” Idris Temple has remained visible and relevant during these difficult times.

Martin Luther King Jr. Parade On January 20, 2020, the Nobility of Idris Temple # 239 were at the forefront of the annual MLK parade held in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Donned in our fezzes and collars, we stood out among the crowd, waving to all who lined the streets of the parade route. All colors, creeds, and nationalities came together at Chester Pruitt Park for food, drinks, and music, and enjoyed the day.

Education and Training On February 7-8, 2020, Idris Temple Divan members went to Kissimmee, Florida for the annual Desert Leadership Forum. The theme was “Leadership: Innovate, Integrate, and Motivate”. That is exactly what we did. The Divan received training on leadership, administrative and managerial skills that can help any Noble to be successful in the Temple and on the job.

Shriners As Mentors (SAM) On February 13, 2020, Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez went to Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Walton Beach to share with Mrs. Gillam’s kindergarten class multicultural experiences and diversity. The children were very attentive and had a ton of questions.

On March 12, 2020, Idris Temple was invited to attend a banquet for the Crestview Storm Travel Basketball Team. Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez and Deputy of the Oasis Al Wilson attended the event. The Nobles briefly spoke to the team and presented them with a donation check.

Community Service On April 24-25, 2020, Chief Rabban Alex Gonzalez and Deputy of the Oasis Al Wilson attended and participated in the City of Crestview food distribution. This was to assist all families in the community that had been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We distributed over 50,000 pounds of food which served over 400 families in the Crestview community and surrounding areas.

The History of Rabia Court No. 25

Horus Court was originally chartered on August 4,1914 in Jacksonville, Florida. The charter was misplaced, and a duplicate issued on August 9,1922. There were several name changes before the Court became known as Rabia No. 25. Originally, there was Horus, then Tunis; next, it became Union and finally, Rabia. It was at this time a replacement charter was issued.

Practicing safety and care, Rabia Court has been able to pivot to the new normal during this pandemic by continuing to excel and upholding our very high standards. The Divan communicates with our members consistently due to the moratorium on physically gathering. On the evening of Saturday May 9th, Erika Banks, Yuvonne Jackson and Danielle Allen, organized “drive-by” visits, throughout the city of Jacksonville to see our senior members. The senior members gave rave reviews to the Court because the idea brightened their spirit. Each senior member received a bouquet of flowers, a social distance hug, and an expressive greeting consisting of horn blowing and flashing headlights. The Court was also able to visit a senior Past Commandress at a rehabilitation facility. Despite the fact we were only able to visit with her at her window due to safety precautions, the visit brought smiles of joy both she and her roommate. Her family expressed their gratitude as well. Rabia Court members also serenaded two senior members in honor of their birthdays. Not only did the gesture bring smiles to their faces, it brought members to tears.

Our Daughters Imperial Mentoring Excellence (DIME) chairperson and committee continue to remain in contact with our DIME families. We have been instrumental in providing to families the needed essential items that have been so difficult to locate. Despite the pandemic, Rabia Court No. 25 continues to care for one another, looking for ways to serve and remain a staple in our community.

Masud Court No. 71 Gets Creative to Connect with Members Amid Covid-19 Crisis Contributed by IC Roberta Nixon Masud Court No. 71 West Palm Beach, Fla. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced temples and courts throughout the Domain to suspend their official business meetings and gatherings until further notice. But, Masud Court No. 71 has found several ways to stay in touch with its members during the downtime.

Illustrious Commandress Roberta Nixon says she and her divan “have endeavored to maintain continuity of contact with our Daughters” over the last several months. Contact for the Court has been in the form of random phone calls, short “drive-by” visits, emails, and Zoom “meet-ups.”

For Mother’s Day, IC Nixon and 2nd Lieutenant Commandress Dt. LaTasha Williams personally visited each of Masud’s seven senior Daughters and delivered Mother’s Day cards from the Court -- all the while, practicing social distancing. The Court leadership felt it was especially important to let the senior members know how much they are loved. The senior Daughters all expressed that they were extremely honored.

Beyond the Fez: Dt. Debra Edmonds Contributed by Dt. Debra Edmonds Malta Court No. 99 Orlando, Fla. What else can I do to give back to my community? How can I help my neighbors? How can I assist some parent who is struggling to provide for their little ones? These are the questions I asked myself, as I pondered how I could make a difference in the lives of others. In 2015, I noticed children in my neighborhood walking to school or huddling at their school bus stops on cold mornings. I wondered why these kids were not dressed properly for the weather.

That’s when the idea for the Give A Kid a Coat Foundation, Inc., was born -- and it has made all the difference. By December of 2015, with the help of contributions, I distributed 64 coats to homeless children in four Seminole County Schools. Truly, this warmed my heart to see the smiles of appreciation from this gift of love. This small act energized my willingness to do even more! We have taken for granted that the “Sunshine State” is not always sunny anymore. As we embrace this era of climate change, we have had to move with the times. I also knew that living in Florida, there was not a need to have winter clothes, much less a coat!

As founder and CEO of this 501c3 nonprofit organization, over the past five years I have been able to give over 500 coats to needy kids. Give A Kid a Coat has received countless donations from businesses, community groups and individuals. Most recently, I was recognized by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ Faith and Community-Based Initiative for work in the community through this foundation. I truly believe I am making an impact to make a difference! If I can help somebody as I pass along then my living shall not be in vain.

Beyond the Fez: HPC Dt. Lorraine James Contributed by HPC Lorraine James Ahmed Court No. 134 Tallahassee, Fla.

The COVID-19 crisis has devastated the entire world, and we are profoundly grateful for all the frontline workers who risk their lives to help the sick. Individuals are also heeding the call to help others in this time of trouble. One such person is HPC Lorraine James of Ahmed Court No. 134, in Tallahassee. Although James is not a frontline worker, she willingly accepted the challenge to make 140 face masks for senior citizens at Bethel Towers, an independent living facility in Tallahassee. Currently, she is in the process of making 100 more masks.

James also provides charitable services in other ways. When she discovered that the parents of her mentees did not have cable television service, James expanded her Nonprofit website to keep the students and their families informed.

Also, she forwarded to them the link with helpful resources to allow them to receive services during the pandemic.

The City of Pompano Beach, which is nestled between West Palm Beach and Miami, has a great amount of history. It is the home to many Prince Hall Affiliated (PHA) organizations. One such organization would be none other than Saba Court No.172. The Court was created on August 4, 1975 under the leadership of the 23 Imperial Commandress Dt. Thelma M. Gordon (87). The first Illustrious Commandress of Saba Court was Dt. Zadia Tyson. rd

For the past 44 years, Saba Court No.172 has been a staple in the Northwest Pompano Beach area. The Court plans to be a service to the community again, once the Covid-19 pandemic has passed and we can safely gather.
