Studio 2 / 2013

URBAN INTERVENTION / PHASES / IN SITU Studio 2 will work on how a programme of architecture could act as an urban intervention and what a programme of architecture should generate as an urban intervention. Basically, it is any action caused by any proposal that may perform as architectural programme (either it was or was not designed by architect) that could improve the present situation of such focus area. Basically, the proposal for effective solution either through functions or activities beside architecture could be taken as the clearest example. We can experience such kind of architecture with or without architect in many parts of the city. Systematically, studio will observe these phenomena and put it forward into architectural design proposal. Fitting into the urban context, the content is changed quantitatively and qualitatively. Laying the foundation for growth is a must. Allowing, for alteration in the future expansion seems to be normal for projects in the city centre. Therefore, this conditions is an ‘In situ’ process. In situ, in a sense, provides meaning of being in context. It is the moment, once, a solution is decided as a way of responding to such context. And then, if there is a moving forward for another account, that solution, undeniably turns itself to be one of the context that the next solution must pay its attention on.

IN SITU In situ In archaeology, in situ refers to an artifact that has not been moved from its original place of deposition. In other words, it is stationary, meaning An artifact being in situ is critical to the interpretation of that artifact and, consequently, of the culture which formed it. In art, in situ refers to a work of art made specifically for a host site, or that a work of art takes into account the site in which it is installed or exhibited.

The term can also refer to a work of art created at the site where it is to be displayed, rather than one created in the artist’s studio and then installed elsewhere (e.g., a sculpture carved in situ). INTROSPECTIVE / RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS : THE RADICAL NOSTALGIA, CITY / ARCHITECTURE / CONSTRUCTION Site : Silom District, Bangkok, Thailand

Aldo Rossi has mentioned in his book ‘The Architecture of the City’ that the city could be understood as architecture. Within the extent of what architecture is, he has objectively trird to declare that it is not the visible image of the city and the differences of its architecture but it is about architecture and the construction of the city itself over time.According to the definition of the city given by Rossi, the way in which the past has influenced and affected both the present and the future is not only by its visible pictorial but also by its hidden mechanism over time. The pictorial of thepast commonly leads anyone who is in his/her presence to his/her nostalgia and tend to leave the mechanism of such past aside and behind. In order to inspect any pictorial critically, the selected picturesque scene of the past must be retrospectively analysed in term of categorised factors which are criteria, conditions, order, code, situation, etc. That invole with and stand behind such picturesque scene, politically and economically. The city could then be re-examing according to its construction over time.

Once again, the process of re-examining the city is formulated. The dimensions and extent that sit between past-present-future will be explored and regenerated. The collective ‘memory’ either continuity or discontinuity under usual and unusual circumstance along any intervention within metropolitan context will be inspected. Accordingly, an interrogation into how the has been constructed over time done by the unit’s procedure will provide substantial materials for unit’s interpretation. The attempt to restore the metropolitan according to our objec- tively speaking, in this matter, could then be formulated and will be tuned into the unit’s design discourse.

Plan show the coverage area of transportation hub that effect the urban system to develop a new type of CBD (Hua lumpong st. along Charoen Krung Rd.)

Design approach is to decoding the city (Bang-rak district), that’s focussing on how to create and find a new type of urban planning and completely useable of public space that negotiated all of existing or surrounding (eg. urban system, local community system and local resident system by new insertion of public space (commercial and residential volume). From group proposal if continue (looking back) some kind of system in the past, city will develop in other way.

HOW THE PUBLIC VOLUME WORKING WITH HOUSING AND OFFICE BUILDING SPACE (PRIVATE) ; FACE TO FACE / SHARING .

The design process’s looking at the surrounding and existing context on this site is transportation (hua lumpong st.), this area can develop to be transportation hub, incress a public space and addition a new type of CBD, focusing to the agenda how the public space volume negotiated with residential (area;semi-privete) and office building (volume;private).

In detail of office building, how to circulate user (residential, officer) use public space volume (core volume) by excavating into their building in 3 dimensions, X - Y axis is building floor (public space / inside building space / shared space) and Z axis is building core system that circulate the officer user to their function.

Our studio try to propose how to design by information of the city (data dynamic), use the set of data index to re-locate and design all of volume like parameter (public space - building function volume - regulation FAR - FAR bonus, etc.) to scope the design area/volume and our own issue.
