It is made of paper.

Tap the paper.

Where does it come from?

Can a thick, tall tree . . .

. . . turn into a thin, small pad of paper?

Yes it can!

This book will tell you how.

1. S aw a tall tree.

Buzz, buzz, buzz till . . .

THUD! The tree falls.

2. Cut the tree into logs.

Then, lug the logs to a mill.

3. Put the logs in a drum.

Thump!

4. C hop, chop, chop the wood and . . .

. . . bam, wham, lots of bits!

We call the bits chips.

5. Put the chips into a big pot.

6. M ix the chips with hot water.

Mash it all up and . . .

. . . bam, wham, wet mush!

We call the mush pulp.

7. Set the wet pulp on mesh.

Let the water drip from the mesh and . . . bam, wham, a mat!

8. Fit the mat into a hot roller.

The mat zips by as fast as a car —buzz, hum, zip!— till it is dry and thin.

10. T hen, cut the mat into sheets.

And there it is!

Bam, wham . . . paper!

MORE Today, high-tech machines make paper. Long ago, the process was very different. In China, 105 CE, Cai Lun made paper by chopping up mulberry tree bark and mixing it with rags and water. Then he flattened the mixture and dried it.

Over time, more people learned to make paper. In 1100, an early paper mill was built in Fez, Morocco. There are now more than 500 working paper mills in the United States and about 10,000 worldwide.

Today, some mills recycle paper. They wash used paper to remove the inks and dyes. The washed paper can be used alone or mixed with wood pulp to make new paper. A piece of paper can be recycled up to seven times.
