Primetime Highlights

Welcome to April on Rocky Mountain PBS! We’re kicking off Earth Month with the premiere of “Our New World.” Then check out new documentaries “Wilding” and “Tomorrow Begins Here,” and new episodes of “NATURE” and “NOVA.” April is also Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), so look out for a ton of titles celebrating music, like “Behind the Mic: The Legacy of Carlos Lando,” which celebrates the legendary KUVO JAZZ radio host. Don’t miss the premiere of our own Rocky Mountain PBS original documentary, “Careless: Colorado’s Childcare Struggle.” For drama lovers, season 14 of “Death in Paradise” premieres, along with new episodes of “Call the Midwife,” “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and “The Forsytes.”

Our New World 2-PART DOCUMENTARY SERIES

A new PBS documentary series focusing on nature’s adaptation to climate change and how humans can support a thriving planet. The program explores environmental resilience, featuring case studies on restoring ecosystem health. It aims to reveal how the planet will change and what the future holds.

The Humbler: DANNY GATTON (JAM)

Danny was a master of blues, country, rock, bluegrass, and jazz styles – his ability was so overwhelming to other guitarists that they nicknamed him “The Humbler”. Danny Gatton has often been called “The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist” because he never got the recognition he deserved in his short life.

NOVA RETURN TO THE MOON

WED April 29 | 8 PM

A half-century after American astronauts walked on the Moon, NASA and its international partners are taking the dream of Apollo a giant step further. In the coming years, the Artemis missions – named after Apollo’s twin sister in Greek mythology – aim to bring astronauts back to the Moon and establish a lunar space station for scientific and commercial exploration.

Colorado Experience

THE GAMES THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Fifty years ago, Colorado was supposed to host the Winter Olympics. But the state is forever known as the only place to ever be awarded the Games — and then reject them. After Denver won the Olympic bid in 1970, what followed was two years of excitement, confusion, deceit and protest, culminating in a statewide referendum where Colorado voters essentially rejected the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Dave Grusin: NOT ENOUGH TIME (JAM)

Millions of people love the music of Dave Grusin but may not know his name. Discover Grusin’s journey from Colorado cowboy to Oscar and Grammy winning composer. Packed with archival images and concert footage, the film also shares intimate interviews with Quincy Jones, Tom Brokaw, Michael Keaton, Tommy Lipuma, Marcus Miller, and many others.

Nothing Safer LOCAL DOCUMENATRY

SUN April 12 | 5 PM

A documentary exploring the Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program, where incarcerated women gain skills, selfesteem, and income by training rescue dogs. Launched by Colorado Correctional Industries in 2002, the program helps inmates reintegrate into society while providing trained dogs for children with medical needs, offering both dogs and women a second chance.

Charles Burrell has played at the highest level in both jazz and classical music genres. Charlie helped to form the cultural identity of Denver, despite the politics in play, some of which adversely affected Charlie as a man of color. He remarkably rose above it all through his grace, intellect, and incomparable music.

CARELESS: COLORADO’S CHILDCARE STRUGGLE

Public funding has long ignored child care for children under six. What does that mean for the future of families here? Statewide, families at all income levels report struggling to find affordable care. The Tallest Dwarf follows filmmaker Julie Forrest Wyman as she searches for her place in the little people community and unpacks rumors of dwarfism in her own family. Through intimate stories, creative collaborations, and archival history, the film delves into identity and medicine, asking whether society should change people or the structures that limit them.

The film spotlights the famous tigers of Ranthambore National Park in northwestern India, focusing on the most filmed and studied Bengal tigers in the world within their thousand-year-old fort environment.

The film investigates catastrophic, unpredictable atmospheric “wet microbursts” that are causing global destruction, including sinking ships and downing planes. Andrea Kramar is a senior producer at Rocky Mountain PBS with 10 years of experience producing short and long form documentaries and writing features. Her work has appeared on USA TODAY, CNBC, ABC News, The Tennessean, Austin AmericanStatesman, The Indianapolis Star, El Paso Times, Asbury Park Press, and in various film festivals. She recently received a Peabody award for her work on the USA TODAY documentary: “The Post Roe Baby Boom: Inside Mississippi’s Maternal Health Crisis.”
