40th SUA Student Fall Music Performance The Sound of Music Arr. Robert Russell Bennett RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN The Sound of Music is a musical composed by Richard Rodgers in 1959. In 1962, a film adaptation of the stage musical came out. It became an instant hit, starring famous actors and actresses such as Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The story is based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (1949) written by Maria Augusta von Trapp. The plot centered around the Von Trapp family and their journey from Austria to the United States after their escape from their home country, occupied by the German forces. Many songs from the musical have become universal standards such as “Do-Re-Mi”, “Edelweiss”, and “My Favorite Things”. We hope you enjoy the familiar tunes that will be performed by the concert band tonight. Whispers SANDY FELDSTEIN & LARRY CLARK The composition is dedicated to Sandy Feldstein (co-composer) for all the great things he has done for music education during his career. Its lyrical style makes it a perfect vehicle to teach musicianship, elegant phrasing, balance, blend and beauty of tone. Tonight, let us invite you to the world of Whispers together. On With the Snow! ARR. DOUGLAS E. WAGNER Sleigh Ride Winter Wonderland Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! “Sleigh Ride” stands as a classic orchestral composition created by Leroy Anderson. The initial inspiration for this piece struck the composer during a hot July in 1946, and he completed the work by February 1948. On June 7, 1948, the Boston Pops, under the direction of Arthur Fiedler, delivered its debut performance. The original recordings were instrumental renditions, with lyrics penned by Mitchell Parish in 1950, capturing the joy of sleigh rides and other delightful winter activities. “Winter Wonderland” is a song written in 1934 by Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith. Due to its seasonal theme, it is often regarded as a Christmas song. The song’s lyrics were about a couple’s romance during the winter season. A later version of “Winter Wonderland” included a “new children’s lyric” that transformed it “from a romantic winter interlude to a seasonal song about playing in the snow.” “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” or simply “Let It Snow,” is a song crafted by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in July 1945, during a heat wave
ABOUT THE PROGRAM in Hollywood, California. The duo envisioned cooler conditions as they created the piece. Initially recorded by Vaughn Monroe in the fall of that year and released just after Thanksgiving, the song swiftly became a Christmas hit.

ABOUT SOKA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Soka Performing Arts Center is located on the beautiful hilltop campus of Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo. Our facility includes the 1,032seat Concert Hall featuring world-class acoustics designed by master acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, designer of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, among many others. We also have an intimate 350-seat Black Box Theatre that allows for multiple seating configurations including club seating with bistro tables. More than 750 performances have taken place since the center’s dedication on May 27, 2011. The 2023-24 season marks our twelfth season presenting first-class programming in our world-class concert hall. We are continuing to expand our programming and outreach with the addition of a Children’s Concert Series, Blues Festival, and the only Great Pianists Series on the West Coast. From classical and jazz to world and contemporary music, the Soka Performing Arts Center has become a prized space for artists and audiences alike. We are proud to be the home of the Pacific Symphony Chamber Orchestra. Our Sundays @ Soka Series with Pacific Symphony continues to be one of our most popular series year after year. Our presentations with other Orange County arts organizations have enabled us to reach further into our community to offer arts education and programming. Our partnership with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County includes our PSOC Series, which brings superlative artists to our stage. We also partner with PSOC for our Outreach Program, bringing over 7,000 school children to Soka Performing Arts Center to experience live performances with outstanding musicians. With its world-class acoustics and first-class performances, Soka Performing Arts Center is quickly becoming one of the cultural jewels of Orange County.
