Welcome to February on RMPBS! This month we will celebrate Black History with several programs reflecting on the Black Experience. Look for the (BHM) tag on programs that are reflecting and celebrating the journeys and accomplishments of Black excellence. Starting off with an all-new series, Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History with Henry Louis Gates premieres, Triumph: Tampa’s Untold Chapter in the Civil Rights Movement , and Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates . We also have new Frontline episodes focusing on the crisis in Venezuela, new episodes of Independent Lens, NATURE, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, NOVA, and the series premiere of Phoebe & Jay on KIDS.

Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History is a four-part series tracing the rich, complex relationship between Black and Jewish Americans — defined by solidarity and strained by division. Drawn together by racism and antisemitism, they forged civic and cultural bonds, especially during the civil rights era. The series explores both the challenges and enduring promise of that alliance.

The new, acclaimed David Attenborough documentary series explores the universal challenges and ingenious strategies of animal parents raising young across diverse habitats, while also touching on human parents’ instincts and adaptation in a changing world, connecting to natural parenting themes like attachment parenting and sustainable living.

May 1st marked 5 years of legal sports betting in Colorado. How has this legalization affected Colorado’s economy, businesses, sports industry, and population in general? This series examines Colorado sports betting from beginning to present day and follows a four-chapter arc of excitement, anxiety, disappointment and hopeful recovery that mirrors the experience of placing a bet.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF CLARA BROWN

Gabriel’s Daughter the Life and Legacy of Clara Brown tells the true story of an African American pioneer by integrating the perspective of a world-premiere American opera about her life. Newly freed from enslavement, Clara walked along-side a wagon-train as a laundress and cook from Kentucky to the gold mines of Colorado. However, Clara was seeking a treasure beyond gold, she longed to find her only surviving daughter Eliza Jane, sold away from her at an auction.

This is [Not] Who We Are DOCUMENTARY (BHM)

This documentary explores the gap between Boulder, Colorado’s progressive self-image and the experiences of its small, resilient Black community. Boulder is emblematic of predominantly white communities that profess an inclusive ethic but live a different reality. The film reveals explores the roots of institutional racism, and opens pathways for dialogue, insight, and positive change.

This special chronicles the extraordinary life and career of one of America’s most trailblazing doctors and child advocates. Retrace the trail Dr. Berman left behind, paving new ground for childhood immunizations, bringing healthcare to developing countries and pushing lawmakers to profoundly change the landscape of Colorado’s healthcare, in order to protect its most vulnerable children.

CO-Existing with Wildfire documents the impact of wildfires in Colorado, showcasing what federal and state government organizations are doing to help, while emphasizing the critical role of homeowners in preventing wildfires. Expert interviews with local foresters, researchers, state fire officials, Colorado Congressmen, and personal stories of the impact of wildfires and mitigation efforts.

Discover how lodging has changed with transportation throughout Colorado. From stage coaches and railroads, to the autobus and eventually cars, tourists have increasingly flocked to Colorado’s mountains. Venture to Grand Lake and Steamboat to discover the history behind some of the favorite places to stay while making a mountain escape.

Colorado Experience NATIVE HORSES

The history of our country has always been told from the colonizers’ perspective. One mythology is that horses integrated into Native American cultures after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, but the truth was found hiding in plain sight – in both oral histories and the bones of Native horses. Archaeologists and Native Americans come together to retell the story of the horse.

Colorado Experience MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY

It’s been called The Road to Hell—and just as often, the most beautiful drive in Colorado. The Million Dollar Highway is awe-inspiring and death-defying, a road many believed could never be built. In truth, it almost wasn’t— carved through some of the steepest, hardest, and most unforgiving mountain passes at a devastating human cost, borne by both the Ute people and the laborers who blasted, dug, and drilled it into existence.

CECIL & ARI ALEXANDER

Ari Alexander, a Danish-American artist, holds a deep connection to both jazz and singer-songwriter traditions. Cecil, an award-winning jazz guitarist, was a finalist in the prestigious Herbie Hancock Competition in 2019. The couple visited the KUVO JAZZ studios in June 2025 to perform some of their original compositions.

Meet Cleo Parker Robinson, a pioneer for Black excellence. Throughout her 53-year career, Cleo has become a cultural ambassador that has influenced the world of dance, not only in Denver, but across the globe. She has paved the way for many generations of talented dancers to take center stage and has been a true pillar of the Five Points community for over five decades.

UNCOVERING DEARFIELD (BHM)

This episode uncovers the history of Dearfield, a oncethriving Black settlement founded during the Great Migration. Situated on the arid plains east of Greeley, Dearfield was more than a community; it was a dream of prosperity and autonomy for Black settlers seeking refuge from the racial tensions of the South. This episode traces the rise and decline of this town and its impact.

Creators are reclaiming a long-overlooked legacy deeply rooted in Colorado history—from the pioneering Exodusters to Lu Vason, founder of Denver’s Bill Pickett Rodeo. As Black history faces growing threats, this documentary highlights the enduring impact of Black cowboys and the voices redefining the culture today.

A RUSSELL MALONE TRIBUTE (BHM)

Russell Malone left us on August 23, 2024 and his friends are paying homage to his music and memory. Guitarist Bobby Broom and Russell‘s band members take the stage to create a night of remarkable music! Bobby Broom took up guitar at 12 and five years later, in 1977, made his first appearance with Sonny Rollins at Carnegie Hall.

After the Civil War, four million formerly enslaved people were set free, but most had no place to go. Wanting autonomy over their lives, many formed Freedom Colonies, living far away from the racism of Jim Crow. This program follows four of these communities struggling to keep their legacies alive.

Explore the life and legacy of Barbara Jordan in The Inquisitor. Jordan was a groundbreaking Texas congresswoman whose sharp intellect and moral clarity transformed U.S. politics. From Nixon’s impeachment to civil rights battles, her voice demanded accountability, while she privately faced struggles few ever knew of.

State of the Union Address

A PBS NEWS SPECIAL TUE Feb 24 | 7 PM

The speech on Feb. 24 will mark Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term. Although he did speak to a joint session of Congress in March last year, technically, it was not considered a formal State of the Union address. Typically, presidents address a joint session of Congress early on during their first year before delivering State of the Union addresses to Congress in subsequent years.

What is the State of the Union?

According to Congress’ website, the State of the Union address is a speech where the president reports on the “current condition of the United States” as well as a place to give policy proposals ahead of the legislative year.

Roots of Comedy

Jesus Trejo travels to Denver to meet a comic whose life on the river is as important as his life on stage. Eeland Stribling strives to find true life balance in the outdoors of Colorado where he often calls on his experience as a wildlife biologist.
