Jomeca rocks women’s World Cup

By Thomas O'KEEFE LOCAL artist turned majorleague entertainer, Jomeca, has just returned from DJ duties at the Women’s FIFA World Cup events in Sydney on Thursday 20 July.

As DJ and music director, Jomeca rocked Stadium Australia at Homebush for the opening Sydney match, entertaining 75,784 people – a record crowd for women’s soccer in Australia, and close to the 83,500 capacity.

Jomeca rocks women’s World Cup FROM Page 1

“You can play Sweet Caroline and hear 75,000 people sing back to you, then the lights go out and the torches look like stars.”

Jomeca grew up in Tea Gardens, with music always present at home, and she would often DJ alongside her dad from an early age.

“I think I’ve been doing it for so many years that I’ve been fortunate to network with the right people who can put me on the pathway I am on now,” Jomeca said,

contemplating how she started with small volunteer gigs for school, family and friends.

She developed a love for DJing, singing, and performing throughout school, saying, “when I was younger, I always had a goal that I didn’t want to do something that I did not enjoy, and am very lucky to have stumbled into the amazing stuff that I get to do.”

While genuinely enjoying what she does may be a perk, Jomeca remembers grinding away for many years to realise her successes

thus far.

Her biggest gig so far, Jomeca previously raised the crowd’s roar at the ATP and United Cups at Roswell Arena in Sydney, including the 2022 New Years Eve Nadal v Norrie match.

Back in Karuah, Jomeca still volunteers at the TGPS Year 6 Farewells and discos, and recently at the Myall River VIEW Club’s ‘Christmas in July’ anniversary, alongside boxing with the local PCYC group.

Jomeca returns to Sydney throughout the FIFA tournament, entertaining at the Sydney Football Stadium on 28 July, then the big final at Stadium Australia on 20 August.

Power in numbers: councils form regional climate network FROM Page 1 partnered with the Cities Power Partnership to enable collaboration and support in relation to clean energy initiatives in an effort to set the region up for a prosperous future.

JO chairwoman and Singleton Mayor Sue Moore said the agreement strengthened the Hunter’s reputation as a region that supported meaningful action on climate change.

“In order to make an impact on climate initiatives, our councils need to be able to support one another and coordinate our efforts to benefit our communities across the region. By partnering with Cities Power

Partnership, our councils and the Hunter JO are ensuring that we take joint action for our region and our communities,” said Mayor Moore.

Port Stephens Council has also signed on.

“Working collaboratively, we aim to attract more funding, expertise and resources to support region-wide and council-specific projects such as electrifying council fleets where possible and boosting energy efficiency,” said Councillor Moore.

“In 2021, the Hunter became the first region in Australia to have all councils become members of the Cities Power Partnership, so it makes sense that we are also the first region that has committed to a

Regional Partnership Agreement.”

Sustainable transport and ramped-up renewable energy production will be among five actions the councils will pledge to, they include: Supporting regional collaboration on electric vehicles by identifying opportunities and working together in delivering solutions; supporting evolution to a clean energy future by facilitating regional collaboration, planning and project delivery and/or information sharing; advocating for improved energy efficiency and reducing emissions in the Hunter region and; sharing knowledge and learning to boost impact.

Probus bids farewell after 35 years JUST a few short months after celebrating its 35th year of existence, the Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Probus Club has ceased to function.

The club was founded in February 1988 following sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Rutherford-Telarah.

Until 2019, the club operated as a singlegender club, however whilst the club’s constitution was silent on gender and its membership only open to men, wives and partners were always included in all its social functions and outings and they were also invited and made welcome to the monthly meetings despite having no voting rights.

Following the formation of a new mixed Probus Club in Hawks Nest in 2011, the club's membership numbers slowly declined from approximately one hundred members to less than sixty over the next several years.

In late 2018 with the intention to address the declining numbers and after much discussion and deliberation, the HNTG Probus Club began the transition to become a combined Probus Club in 2019.

Following a strong membership drive conducted in conjunction with the transition, membership grew rapidly to 113 members by the end of 2019.

However, when the COVID pandemic struck in early 2020, the club was forced into recession until early 2021.

Further disruptions and restrictions including social outings continued and as a result, the fallout that followed was that many of our newer members resigned without having experienced the real benefits of being part of Probus.

Despite the sadness of the club winding up on June 30, there will always remain the fond memories of the enjoyable times

shared along the way, memories that will remain with us beyond Probus.

During the 35 years since the club's foundation, members have been able to participate and enjoy a wide range of activities on offer including the many annual trips away, social evenings, mystery lunches, movies, and live shows.

For our many lawn bowlers in the club, we celebrated trophy wins along the way.

We also enjoyed many delicious homemade cakes and scones at our monthly meeting morning teas, not forgetting our many incredibly interesting guest speakers that we had speak at our meetings.

In many ways the club became a victim of its success.

Over 35 years, there were not too many guest speakers around that had not addressed the club and there are only so many trips away before they start to be repeated.

The activities of the club ended with a dinner on 23 June, the last chapter of what has been a great journey for all Probarians that have been part of this once-proud club.

It has been suggested at the farewell dinner that consideration be given to

hosting a reunion dinner around the time of the club's foundation anniversary (15th February), the invitation would extend to all past members including life members and widows of past members.

VANDALS have struck several public amenities across Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, as presented in a recent audit at the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association meeting on Monday 17 July.

This issue has been a priority concern for locals for weeks, as vandalism has spiralled out of control.

The worst-hit location has been the public toilet block on Moira Parade, which should be available for families and fishermen, but has been cordoned off by MidCoast Council because of damage.

“All toilet pans, hand wash basins, toilet cisterns and pipework were damaged,” council was told on Friday 21 July.

“Council is filing a police report and investigating options for vandal-proof fittings and fixtures; the duration of the closure will depend on material and contractor availability,” the meeting heard.

Not only did vandals wreak havoc inside, they tried to set fire to it.

There has been conjecture the vandalism may be related to a TikTok social media trend, where attentionseeking simpletons are ‘challenged’ to destroy and steal as much public property as they can, the goal being to garner as many ‘likes’ as possible.

Other toilet blocks, including adjacent to the Hawks Nest Community Centre, have also been hit, adding to the already deteriorating condition of many amenities around town.

The Port Stephens-Hunter district police says the vandalism is being investigated.

“We are well aware of people capable

of these acts who are living in the community, and are following up on leads,” Chief Inspector Skelly told News Of The Area.

“Malicious damage is a criminal offence, and anyone caught will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Despite existing contracts no-one seems to be maintaining the pool during the off-season, leaving some wicked surprises for volunteers.

could barely be seen at the shallow end, and to the best of anyone’s knowledge, noone else has maintained the pool since it was shut for the winter.

Volunteers reckoned the biggest concern was hygiene - local ducks and plovers seem to have taken a liking to the place - and the fact noone was cleaning it.

“I am appalled that volunteers have to maintain the pool, when we all pay rates – where are our rates

going?” asked volunteer Michelle Winn.

“I am shocked at the state of the pool,” said volunteer Ronnie Nichols, gesturing at centimetres-thick duck droppings.

“This is an integral part of the community, useful for local retirees doing laps, physio, and for social gatherings, as well as learnto-swim [lessons] for kids and young families, which is essential near the beach,” Ms Nichols added.

Car wrecks Yamba Street garden

By Thomas O’KEEFE VEHICULAR vandalism has been wrought upon the small, but beautiful, garden at the corner of Yamba Street and Tuloa Avenue in Hawks Nest.

A small spread of bromeliads, carefully planted by the Tuesday morning volunteer garden group across the road from the newsagency has been run over.

“It’s a wonder they didn’t take out the Prentice poem pedestal, too,” said Kath Verdon, one volunteer with the garden group who was trying to fix the damage.

The garden, part of the Myall River Art Walk, features a plaque with poetry by Heather Prentice, ‘Where The Flannel Flowers Bloom’. q

q The garden was thankfully replanted by Mr Soane and Mr Ingram.

The corner is quite clearly marked, the street signpost is still standing, untouched, but between it and some large gum trees the place was a mess.

Thankfully, local volunteers Marcus Soane and Dave Ingram pitched in on Tuesday to replant fallen foliage that had been pitched into nearby bushes.

“They are a hardy, lowmaintenance plant, and should survive,” Ms Verdon assured News Of The Area.

The Prentice poetry was spared the vehicular attack.

“We are just disappointed to see the damage, especially as they were starting to flower.”

The garden group asked everyone in town to keep an eye out for the area, hoping people can take pride in their neighbourhood.

“People could easily get on board and help it all look good, rather than run it over,” said Ms Verdon.

She said she hoped it was an accident and people hadn’t taken to running over flowers in their cars.

LOVEY’s Grocers IGA Hawks Nest has won three gongs at the National IGA awards of excellence on the Gold Coast.

The Small Fresh Award, Small Grocery and Perishables, and the coveted National Small ‘Xpress’ Store of the Year for 2023 were all taken out by Lovey’s at the awards on July 17.

“It’s nice to get recognised, the locals support us all year round,” said store manager Lydal Blaber.

“The owners, Peter and Ros Trapple are good bosses and do the right thing by us, too," she said.

This is not the first set of awards for which the Hawks Nest IGA supermarket has been nominated, with several nominations in the past few years.

“Many IGAs are being renovated all around the country, but hopefully we will be in with a good chance next year, too,” Ms Blaber said, noting the need to keep things fresh, in many more ways than just one.

EXERCISE is now easier and equipment more modern than ever at the newlyupdated Yallarwah Park along The Ridgeway in North Arm Cove.

The upgrades are the result of a successful bid in 2022 by the North Arm Cove Community Association Inc (NACCA), for a slice of the state government’s ‘Stronger Country Community Fund’.

The association won

$90,600 with its bid.

The park and its shiny new outdoor exercise equipment are the realisation of a local design, done in tandem with the MidCoast Council parks department, and are already a hit with locals of all ages, with busy mornings and afternoons most days of the week.

“MidCoast Council has been very supportive of the area being built, and we are very grateful for

their assistance,” Bob Reid, president of NACCA told News Of The Area.

“Council worked with us on approvals, the final design, and provided the picnic table and even some plants,” he said.

A new 260-metre concrete pathway weaves and wends its way around the trees, offering walking and cycling space for all, and replacing the old, inaccessible gravel track.

Locals can keep fit and healthy with two sets of Australian-made exercise equipment, offering six different methods for

strength improvement and maintaining agility and mobility, purchased from ‘a_space’, an Australian company that manufactures domestically.

If all that exercise calls for a break, there is a new, covered metal picnic table, complete with a wood-look finish for aesthetic harmony.

They will play concerts at Singleton, Gloucester and Dungog in August.

Returning for their second tour with Music in the Regions, Andrew Blanch and Emily Granger combine their solo expertise on guitar and harp to create a unique duo that displays the energy, versatility, and beauty of these much-loved instruments.

In an instrument pairing rarely seen together, this is at once both fresh and familiar.

Side by side on stage, the instruments face each other like an enchanted reflection – with striking visual and aural similarities.

In this way, the sound world created by these two plucked string instruments is not dissimilar to that of a guitar duo – the harp, with its 47 resonant strings and a collection of extended techniques, providing an expanded range of expressive possibilities to the more common two-guitar pairing.

Award-winning

guitarist Andrew Blanch is internationally renowned, having claimed third place in the 3rd International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini in 2016.

In 2020, Andrew released his debut album on the ABC Classic label with longtime collaborator, guitarist Ariel Nurhadi. The album was selected as Limelight Recording of the Month, Featured Album on ABC Classic, and was one of just a handful of albums nominated for the AIR Best Classical Album Award that year.

Australian-American harpist Emily Granger has firmly established herself in the Australian concert scene, recently being appointed principal harp of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. In 2022 Emily released her solo debut album, In Transit.

In Transit was selected as ‘featured album’ on ABC Classic and 2MBS Fine Music Sydney.

Enthusiastically received by reviewers, Emily’s album received more than 2.3 million streams within 12 months of release.

Canberra International Music Festival, and Australian Digital Concert Hall, Andrew Blanch and Emily Granger will tour Suite mágica to Nundle, Emerald Hill, Barraba, Singleton, Gloucester and Dungog this August.

Music in the Regions general manager and producer, Ian Whitney, said: “I’m very excited for our audiences in the NorthWest and Upper Hunter to experience the magic of these two brilliant and charismatic performers. Andrew and Emily were a hit on their 2022 tour with their dynamic stage presence and gorgeous repertoire.”

Emily Granger said: “Andrew and I are delighted to join forces with Music in the Regions again to bring the unique sounds of the classical harp and guitar to regional NSW! We are both passionate about getting out of the urban centres to bring Sydney Opera House standards to regional community halls.

“Andrew and I have been collaborating for over three years since meeting at The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada in late 2019,” she said.

“Since then, we've

commissioned four new Australian works for our duo, arranged classics like Ravel and Granados, and have recently finished preparing our upcoming album. Our program is full of joy and virtuosity, and we just cannot wait to hit the road and share this music with audiences in August!”

“Lugging around a 39-kilogram harp requires a lot of planning, and we’re so lucky that Music in The Regions has thought of everything.

Emily is thankful that the harp has not been an item of lost baggage as yet.

“My brand new harp is in the process of being shipped to Sydney all the way from Philadelphia, so let’s hope it makes the journey safely and arrives as planned.”

Emily is a huge fan of impressionism, “Debussy and Ravel are two of my favorite composers, which isn’t anything new coming from a harpist! “These guys knew how to write for our instrument.

“If I ever need a big dose of inspiration all I have to do is turn on Ravel’s Daphnes and Chloe or Debussy’s La Mer to remind myself why I love being a musician,” she said.

Tropical colour for Karuah

AN ARMY of volunteers turned out to beautify the median strip along Tarean Road (Old Highway) in the middle of Karuah on Tuesday 18 July, thanks to a $6000 ‘Vibrant Spaces’ grant from Port Stephens Council.

With traffic redirected for most of the morning, a dozen locals began digging, mulching and planting to bring a barren-looking median strip at the centre of town back to life with a variety of flora in all shapes and colours.

“The previous parklets project changed the whole aspect of Karuah, which led into this media strip project,” Lisa Floyd, from the Riverside Motel, and leader of the beautification project, told News Of The Area.

“We’ve sourced plants, bought and donated, from up and down the coast, and even today people are bringing out plants from

their yards to contribute.”

Metal rings, to be fitted with solar feature lights, were donated by Luke and Robyn Roberts from Ironbark Estate, while Albert Johnson Mill donated several battens from the parklets project, and Karuah Gardens Motel added big planter bowls to the mix.

Birds of paradise, prehistoric cycads, dianellas, mother-in-laws tongues, agaves, agapanthas, xanadus, and lemandras now line the planter, with epiphytic bromeliads strapped to the existing spotted gums.

“Lisa’s idea was to bring a punch of tropical colour to the town,” said Deb Sexton, a volunteer with 2IC.

Stow it, lug it, stash it in a Boomerang Bag

SAVING the Earth and saving lives went hand in hand at a recent presentation of ‘Boomerang Bags’ to local paramedics in Tea Gardens.

Boomerang Bags are made from recycled clothing fashioned into useful carryalls.

recently received a donation of old ambulance uniforms from Peter Turpin, who was leaving the local paramedic team, and were struck with inspiration.

The work began.

“With a lot of imagination and some clever sewing we repurposed them into work bags which were then gifted back to our hard-working local paramedics,” said Julie

Sims, co-ordinator of the Boomerang Bags TGHN group.

Boomerang Bags began in Burleigh Heads and the concept has gone global, with groups making and selling them from Hawks Nest to Vanuatu, and as far away as Romania.

“Approximately 6,000kg of textiles and clothes are discarded in Australian landfills every 10 minutes,” said Ms Sims, lamenting such waste.

The Boomerang Bags group has also had considerable success petitioning all clubs and pubs in town to stop putting raffle meat trays into plastic bags.

“We have had so much community support over the years and have raised thousands of dollars,

including $6000 at our 2022 Biggest Morning Tea, which is gifted back to community groups,” Ms Sims said.

Not only is Boomerang Bags a worthy cause, but it has brought together a group of volunteers who have made lasting friendships, renewed at their sewing bees on the second Saturday of every month in the Dolphin Room at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

Boomerang Bags can be bought at the monthly sewing bees, and at Café Providence in Hawks Nest.

Hawks Nest ladies golf

HAWKS NEST LADIES OPEN DAY A HUGE SUCCESS On Friday 14th July the Hawks Nest Ladies hosted their annual Open day with 144 ladies playing from various clubs in NSW all playing an Irish team event. The day day began at 7.30 am with morning tea held on front decking of the Golf Club with a temperature of only 9 degrees so hot coffee and teas were most welcome as well as two hot dishes and lots of other goodies.

At 8.30 am with a shot gun start the game began. As well as NTPs and Longest Drives this year we held a Golden Shot on the short 10th Hole, Par 3 with a $2.00 entry fee and winner NTP to win $100. The lucky and clever lady on the day was Margaret Pearson from Merewether.

By 9.30 am the weather had warmed up and by lunchtime it was

a lovely 21 degrees with a beautiful sunny and warm winters day a great time was had by all.

We also welcomed Tracy Thomas & Pierce Collits from their new shop in Hawks Nest (Hunter Care Equipment). They were our main sponsors for the day and brought along a selection of items from their shop, some as donations for us to sell and also to show just what they have in stock.

All very handy items to make life easier for the older generation.

I personally was quite taken with the tilting hot water jug and press button can opener. Our other sponsor the year was Luck Love Design who have an on-line site (www. locklovedesign.com) and sell lovely unique individual ladies clothing.

This year the raffle consisted of two large boxes of goodies worth $200 and $150 respectively. Proceeds

from this raffle go towards buying trophies for the ladies presentation and sub-sidizing our Christmas luncheon, so we much appreciate all those who bought tickets this year.

Congratulations go to all team winners (4 x teams) as well to those who won other prizes.

Thanks of course go to the Pro Shop for all their help, the Green staff who keep our course in excellent condition, the Restaurant for the lunches, the cafe making mostly hot coffees and teas, the bar staff who are always kept busy with a smile for everyone, all helpers on the day as well as the ladies committee.

Lastly not forgetting the ladies who made the morning teas and got up early to bring it along, well done everyone.

Heavy Thinking REMEMBER the song sung by the Hollies, Neil Diamond and others with the line ‘He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother’?

Today’s article may be too heavy for many but necessary to contemplate if we are to become each other’s brother and live our lives successfully in harmony.

We need to decide what we can’t exist without in life and try to place those thoughts into a logical order of importance.

It is not something we need to do more than a few times over our lifespan, but here is the order of importance that many will find to be acceptable to the level needed, if we as a people are indeed ever to reach the goal of living

in harmony to the point of being each other’s brother.

Number one must be life itself, its creation, existence and maintenance.

To achieve this, we need doctors and a host of health professionals such as nurses, paramedics, researchers in order to achieve life at its highest level.

These are the people and occupations that I hold at the highest level in our society.

Number two, in order to sustain a healthy life, we need clean, fresh water plus the production of the basic foods of life.

In order to achieve this, we must have farmers and graziers, small-crop growers, plant researchers, hydrologists etc.

Number three should be the provision of shelter and if cave dwelling isn’t your thing, then the people we look up to must be the legion of trades providers in the building industry, who I believe are the logically deserving the #3 place.

So now we have life, the necessary people to ensure that we remain healthy plus the water, food and shelter in order to sustain it.

Next must become occupation to both provide what we require and of course then be paid for it.

THE idea of a best friend is someone who you feel comfortable and confident

enough with to share your hopes, dreams and fears.

Surely your friend knows about your claustrophobia and seasickness? If you are as close as you say, she should have factored that in.

If you’re going to be miserable and unwell, I’d be truthful with her and say you will ruin the celebrations and that instead you will organise a surprise event for just the two of you when she returns.

Then book a cattle mustering weekend followed by karaoke and an insect dégustation menu served by a chef who yells abuse at his guests.

Let her know, as she’s falling off the horse or running to the bathroom because she has a grasshopper leg stuck in her throat, that what you love most about your friendship is how well you know each other.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

So, education and job training is essential in order to provide the opportunity to gain these skills, which can be traded between people and get paid for doing it.

Good teachers are the critical requirement to provide this.

Having achieved all of the above, our needs in life really broaden quickly.

The necessity to move about means transport becomes a major issue.

We need trains and trams, cars and trucks, ferries and shipping, planes, bicycles and the rest.

The production of clothing, sporting goods for recreational use, retailers to deliver it, manufacturers to build equipment such as cars, boats and planes, plus factories and the necessary infrastructure for these items.

Okay you may or may not agree with all of that, or of the order of importance that I place on it, but where are we going with all this thinking or prioritising?

It all comes down to the governments we elect to organise these necessities in life.

There are so many instances of confused thinking delivered by governments who simply forget what is important in life, the basics.

We need hospitals with enough

doctors and nurses to provide the basic necessity to keep us alive and in good, healthy condition.

We know that life cannot be maintained without the provision of good, clean water.

How many dams can we remember being constructed to hold this water?

Our Hunter region had to suffer the disgraceful decision to abandon the Tilligra dams’ construction.

Also, the Dungowan dam on the Peel near Nundle has been deferred and probably abandoned.

Without it how can a major regional city such as Tamworth continue to expand?

While these initiatives are being abandoned locally, the same appears to be the case for the Murray river’s water allocation being denied to the production of food in the prime food bowl of Australia.

The bottom line for me is the need for governments to get back to the provision of the basics for life, which is necessary for our survival but is being deferred, unfunded, intentionally scrapped etc for the preference of playing personal or party politics and the short-term thinking that goes with it.

DEAR News Of The Area, WE have owned a house at Hawks Nest since 2020.

It is not used for rental or incomeproducing activities.

Earlier this year we received a land tax notice.

This increased the land value by 64 percent and the land tax by 151 percent.

I obtained a Valuation Sales Report from the Valuer General.

This shows sales values taken into account when arriving at a valuation.

The VSR listed 8 properties including 2 each from Black Head, Diamond Beach and

There were only 2 in Hawks Nest, both in the same block.

I appealed the decision and an ‘independent’ valuer retained by the Valuer General undertook another valuation.

The new valuation ignored my suggestion the valuations should only be of sales in Hawks Nest and added properties in Boomerang Beach and North Arm Cove.

The independent valuer determined that the value and therefore tax is within an ‘acceptable’ market range.

This has implications for local residents as the valuations are taken into account by council when setting rates.

TUESDAY 18th July: Social bowls played 2 games 3 bowls Triples and a Game of Pairs 2, 4 then 2 bowls to be played all games 18 ends. Jan Coomer (swinger lead), Judi Polak and Dale Cameron by the 8th end were losing by 11 shots (12 v 1) bowling against Jan, Jane Uff and Judy McGavock.

Dale’s team won 6 out of the next 9 ends eventually just going down by 1 shot, 16 v 15 a great fight back by them. Lyn Nightingale and Robyn Webster took the lead on the 4th end and never looked back defeating Ingrid Luck and Sandra Leisemann 22 v 13. Dawn May, Lynda Richards and Bette Saillard annihilated Sheila Rattray,

Dawn Jones and Jean Glover 26 v 8. The winners on the day winning with the lowest score were the 3 J’s Jan, Jane and Judy. Bette Saillard was the raffle winner many thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

Thursday 20th July: Format for play 2 games of turn around Triples and 2 games of Pairs 2,4 and 2,

THURSDAY afternoon training was back on after the school holiday break, with Tash passing on her knowledge to many that turned up.

Saturday morning saw played from round 10 of our local draw, a crisp breeze with abundant sunshine greeted us.

Game 1 in the Minis’ grade, saw the Lofty Cranes Shovelnose Sharks come up against the Karuah RSL Wobbegong Sharks resulting in a 1 all draw.

Game 2 in the “Minis” grade the Myall Lakes Butchery Port Jackson Sharks netted 6 goals while the

Aussie Roofing & Guttering Reef Sharks not quite managing to pop one in. All our little players had a great game that was well refereed

by Lily Fidden.

Our ever popular “Ice Cream Shack Player of the Day” vouchers were awarded to Sunny Thompson, Alex McShane, Hugo Barker and Jasper Delaney.

Game 1 in the Midis’ grade we had the Rapley Builders Grey Nurse Sharks battle it out with the Ray White Real Estate Bull Sharks Ending in close 5 / 3 score, thanks again to Andrew McCormack for offering to ref this one.

In game 2 refereed by Beau Lawrence the Boatshed Mako Sharks hit the back of

the net 6 times against the Boatshed Cafe' Mako Sharks who netted 4.

Flynn Barker, Koby Franks, Aria Jacobsen and Logan Ralphs were all awarded our “Hook N Cook Player of The Day’ vouchers.

The Juniors game was an exciting show of increased skills and sportsmanship between the Sudz Laundry Tiger Sharks and the Hawks Nest Golf Club Thresher Sharks. The Tiger Sharks managing to end the game in front 5 / 2.

Your run-of-the-mill Sunday evening is set to get glamorous with the Logie Awards beaming into lounge rooms nationwide.

From The Star in Sydney, it’s the annual event that celebrates our homegrown TV talent, kicking off – of course – with the not-to-be-missed red carpet spectacle at 7pm. Hosted by Dr Chris Brown and Sonia Kruger, expect a swarm of satin, sparkles and bow ties. After the nominees have waxed lyrical about their fancy outfits, playful comedian Sam Pang will take to the stage as host.

If there’s anything to be learnt from the world of TV, it’s that great shows never really die. Almost 15 years after it last had audiences in stitches, this wacky showcase of comedic talent is revived.

From the clever Working Dog Productions, whose hits include Utopia, Have You Been Paying Attention? and All Aussie Adventures, this fresh season, premiering tonight, has an extra feather in its cap: new host Celia Pacquola. The actor, writer and stand-up star promises to up the good-natured ante as a throng of guest comedians waltz through the blue door, ready to bluff their way through the silly and outrageous scenarios.

After 14 seasons and 323 episodes, this crime stalwart wraps up with a triple-episode goodbye. That’s unless we see the likes of special agents Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) turn up on one of the franchise’s many spin-offs.

But for now, enjoy the spectacle as some old faces return. This veteran series bows out in a playful, if not slightly anticlimactic, fashion.

Three days of music at Wingham Festival

WINGHAM once again welcomes music lovers for three days of performances from October 13 to 15.

Organisers have this year been forced to cap audience numbers at 2,500 a day.

The Wingham Showground location offers onsite camping as

KARUAH Roos will honour their rugby league legends of the past decade at a special presentation dinner next month.

The evening function on Saturday August 12 at Karuah RSL Club will follow the Roos’ Old Players Day festivities against Raymond Terrace Magpies at Lionel Morten Oval.

Having re-formed in 2013 after a short sabbatical from the Newcastle-Hunter Mens Northern Conference competition, the historic Roos will announce their ‘team of the decade’ on a night that should trigger plenty of discussion from diehard supporters.
