Fire doors are a critical barrier for the spread of fires, and it is essential that the correctly specified ironmongery & intumescent is fitted to comply with manufacturers instructions. CE marking is a mandatory conformity marking for certain products sold within the European economic area. Under CPR, certain fire and life safety products may only be placed on the market if they carry the CE mark as they need to perform a vital function in the performance of fire, smoke and escape doors. The CE mark indicates that the hardware product achieves at least the minimum performance deemed essential in aspects of its operation and use. If in doubt, or you have any questions, please contact us for further guidance. As the UK leaves the EU, CE marked goods will be changing to UKCA marking.

Projects

Welling have supplied a number of projects from small domestic installations to large commercial buildings across the UK and even some across the world including Dubai.

The Northern line extension is a new Tube station at Nine Elms London, where Welling worked with and supplied contractors with a range of specialist ironmongery products including heavy duty free standing cabinet piano hinges.

Recently the hotel was refurbished with over 70 bedrooms and function rooms of which included a range of differently finished hardware, including satin brass, polished chrome. Welling offered Design and technical support to ensure the ironmongery were suitable for this prestigious mansion.

Delivery

Orders for stock products processed before 6pm Monday to Friday will be dispatched same day for next working day delivery using nationwide couriers. Standard next day delivery can be any time between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Delivery times and cost may vary on long length items over 1.3 meters. Products over 1.3 meters required with next working day delivery must be ordered by 3pm Monday to Friday.

Overnight delivery services are not 100% guaranteed by the couriers. Our data shows 95 out of 100 deliveries are successfully delivered next working day. There are many factors that influence which hinge is most suitable for each application, ensuring you comply with the latest safety requirements needed when installing fire doors suitable for commercial and residential properties. Below is a guide to help to choose the right hinge for your door.

FIRE DOORS

To ensure you comply with the latest UK Construction products directive, all fire doors should be fitted with hinges that are fire rated, which means they need to be CE or UKCA marked.

To achieve FD30 or FD60 and comply with fire test evidence - 2 x 0.8mm hinge pads per hinge. One Intumescent hinge pad to be behind frame hinge leaf and one behind door hinge leaf. (Specifically for 102x76x3mm Grade13 butt hinges, not all hinge types)

Fire doors are a critical barrier for the spread of fires, and it is essential that the correctly specified ironmongery & intumescent is fitted to comply with manufacturers instructions.

CE marking is a mandatory conformity marking for certain products sold within the European economic area. Under CPR, certain fire and life safety products may only be placed on the market if they carry the CE mark as they need to perform a vital function in the performance of fire, smoke and escape doors. The CE mark indicates that the hardware product achieves at least the minimum performance deemed essential in aspects of its operation and use.

Change is happening… as the UK leaves the EU, CE marked goods will be changing to UKCA marking. Products that previously required CE marking will now require the UKCA (UK conformity assessed) marking. During this transition you may find products still CE marked which you can continue to use, and some products marked UKCA. Both marks are recognised and accepted, and it is important to note that the change is the product markings, not the actual performance test criteria.

Certifire is an independent 3rd party scheme which provide high quality voluntary, product conformity for the passive fire sector assuring the safety of the products.

Ball bearing butt hinges will need periodic oiling depending on usage. Concealed bearing hinges do not need maintenance as they are self lubricating. (Refer to manufacturers for instructions, as some may vary)

Selecting the right hinge involves more than just the weight of the door, so please see the below guide for calculating door mass and for best-practice regarding installation.

CALCULATING DOOR MASS.

Starting with the door weight, adjustments have to be made based on the following factors:

The standard practice and most common way for hinges to be spaced, providing maximum resistance to ‘warping’.

Where overhead door closers are used, additional lateral forces are applied to the top hinge. To reduce the lateral force to the top hinge, it is recommended that the hinges are spaced as shown.

When the door width is more than 1000mm or the door mass exceeds that allowed for 3 hinges, additional hinges can be fitted. Equal spacing shown provides maximum resistance to warping based on 4 hinges.

Where overhead door closers are used within the example illustrated in figure 3 due to the increased lateral forces created by the closer on the top hinge, it is recommended that the hinges are spaced as shown.

BACKSET

Measurement between the middle of the Follower/Keyhole and leading edge of the door.

LOCK DEPTH

Measurement from the leading edge of the door to the back of the lock case.

CENTERS

Measurement between the latch follower and the middle of the keyhole.

LATCH FOLLOWER

This is where the handle’s spindle passes through the lock. The latch can be turned when the handle is engaged.

FACE PLATE

The covering plate for the lock’s forend. Budget versions may be fixed to the lock body.

STRIKE PLATE

The plate that is installed onto the door frame, and prevents the latch from damaging the door frame.

COMMON LOCK TYPES

SASHLOCK

A mortice sashlock has a latch and locking bolt. Latch is operated by lever handle and lock by a cylinder, bathroom turn or a 3 or 5 lever key.

DEADLOCK

Mortice deadlocks and deadbolts have a locking bolt (no latch). Operated by cylinder, bathroom turn or a 3 or 5 lever key.

LATCH

Mortice latches keep a door closed, but not locked.

MORTICE NIGHT LATCH

Mortice night latch is a latch only (no locking bolt). When lever handle or cylinder is operated the latch retracts, allowing exit or entry. They are often fitted with a half set of lever handles one side, and half cylinder the other side, allowing entry from doors outer side by key holders only, and exit from inside by using handle only.

MORTICE ESCAPE LOCK

Escape locks have a latch and locking bolt. There is a split latch follower, allowing handles either side of the door to operate independently. The lever handle located inside the room retracts both latch and lock (giving keyless egress) while the lever handle on the outside of the door only retracts the latch, but not the locking bolt.

CYLINDER SUITING

KEYED TO DIFFER

Each lock has its own key, so you can't use the same key to open a different lock.

KEYED ALIKE

This refers to a number of locks, each operated by the same key.

MASTER KEYED

This is the simplest form of master keying. Each individual lock is operated by its own unique key, and a control (or master) key operates all the locks in the suite. Ideal for large office or shop premises where a number of key holders are needed.

GRAND MASTER KEYED

Is a control key which operates a particular number of locks which are grouped into 2 or more suites. The individual keys will operate the individual locks, while the master keys will operate a selection of the individual locks and the grand master key operates all locks.

CE marking shows that the product is CE marked to the relevant BS standard required for the designed purpose of that locking system. As the UK leaves the EU, CE marked goods will be changed to UKCA marking.

BS EN12209 this accreditation classifies mechanically operated locks, latches and locking plates using an 11 digit coding system and provides a necessary assessment of all the varied features of products for specific markets within Europe.

BS 3621 (Key Exit) and BS 8621 (Turn Exit) is a British Standard for locks fitted to doors, designed so we can easily know that a lock is of a good, theft-resistant standard. It's important for homeowners to know about this as having BS3621 locks fitted to your doors may be a requirement for your home insurance, or it could give you access to bigger savings on your insurance policy.

BORGLOCKS BL2701 ECP – DIGITAL LOCK WITH TUBULAR LATCH

The BL2701 ECP offers a specialist unit in our range of Easicode Pro, featuring a key by-pass built into the knob handle, offering a override of the coding chamber itself.

Separating the Easicode Pro range from the conventional locks is the patented “On the door” code change method. With this, the long and drawn out method of removing tumblers from the back of the keypad is over, cutting down what could be a 10-15 minute job to one that takes only 30 seconds.

With it being cycle tested to 100,000 cycles to show it’s durability, the BL2701 ECP represents the medium tier of small, mechanical keypad locks. This keypad comes with over 4000 potential combinations and a key override, allowing the key to bypass the code. If buying multiple units, a keyed alike option is available so all units share the same key.

This lock comes with a anti-thrust 60mm tubular latch that is fully marine grade and made of durable materials.

As an added extra, this unit can come with a holdback function as required at no additional cost for situations where the door needs to remain open and unlocked.

This lock is suitable for internal use on wooden and composite doors.

BORGLOCKS BL2021 – DIGITAL LOCK WITH BACK TO BACK KEYPADS

The BL2021 is one of our entry level models making up the 2000 series range. This particular variant comes fitted with keypads both sides, requiring a code to both enter and exit for situations where traffic flow can come from either side.

Each keypad comes with independent coding chambers, allowing different codes on either side should this be required. Each have over 8000 combinations and are independently cycle tested to 50,000 operations.

This model is ideal for light duty, access control solutions and is suited for internal wooden or composite doors

BORGLOCKS DIGITAL LOCK – SUITABLE FOR PANIC PUSH PADS

The BL5400 series represents a medium to heavy duty lock where lighter duty locks just won’t handle it. Offering a fully clutched flat bar handle, this lock can be suited for most different applications out there.

CE marking and the relevant British standards is the key to selecting the right door closer for a fire door. The capabilities of each door closer we offer is clearly stated, and is determined by the manufacturer testing, which is in accordance with the European harmonized standards as below.

POWER SIZE

Maximum width capabilities of door closers is determined by their power size. For example EN3 has a 950mm wide door with a maximum weight of 60kg.

EN2 – Not to be used on a fire door

Hydraulic door closers have adjustable latching and closing speed. It is important to note this is different adjustment to power size.

The maximum actual door mass is also included, but note that this is based on the presumption the hinges have been correctly specified, and note this is door mass, not door weight.

CALCULATING DOOR MASS.

Starting with the door weight, adjustments have to be made based on the following factors: DOOR

20% for adding a door closer

Add 75% if using a door closer with back-check function or hold open facility

Add 10% for heavy use doors

It is very important to take careful consideration for other factors when specifying a suitable door closer, as these can affect the closers’ ability to close & latch the door: Intumescent brush seals, acoustic, smoke and drop seals. Small rooms with no air outlet creating air compression.

Wind/ air pressure from corridor entering the building from external environment. Stiff latch and roller mechanism.

Particularly deep reveals - e.g. when door is set far inside the door frame.

DDA & BS 8300

The Equality Act 2010 includes recommendation about the opening force for door closers for disabled access. It states that when measuring the opening force from the leading edge of the door, there should be no more than 30N from 0 degrees (closed position) to 30 degrees open, and no more than 22.5N from 30 degrees to 60 degrees open. We use the logo on the side to show where a door closer meets the requirement for DDA.

When scissor arm door closers are fitted to the push side of the door (either figure 61 or 66) the maximum power size of the closer is reduced by 1. So an EN4 door closer fitted in figure 61 or 66 is actually maximum power size EN3. Additionally, back check function & delayed action functions can be less effective in figure 61 & 66 applications.

ECLISSE SELF-CLOSING MECHANISM FOR FIRE RATED POCKET DOOR KITS

This self-closing kit is completely enclosed inside the system, which allows the door to close by itself. The mechanism can be installed retrospectively.

Max door weight when using this mechanism is reduced to 40kg with our fire rated pocket door systems. Closing door speed can be adjusted without removing door or jambs. Installing the self closing system will reduce the passage size by only 8-10mm. For use with wooden doors only.
