MLC Boarderline Magazine 1993

Editorial

How will boarders, particularly those in Year 12, remember 1993?

"A Year Of Destruction" seems to appropriately convey the feelings of boarders, staff and parents with regard to this year - a year which saw the demolition of Senior Wing and the loss of the Boarders' Lounge, both having been integral parts of boarding house life & history. The Year 12s lost their single rooms and their special, private area of the house, and we all had to endure the noise of machinery, the intrusion of workmen, the irritation of dust, and the general inconvenience caused by this destruction all in the name of music!

In many other ways though, 1993 was a memorable year. Who could forget the Tiddeman spirit surrounding ''The Perils Of Lulu", the new furniture slowly creeping through the house, that new place called 'Lofts', and the Year 12 Demolition Party which saw boarders legally able to graffiti the walls of their corridors and common room?

Due to exceptional circumstances Boarderline '93 broke with the tradition of having Year 12 boarders as editors, but despite this we believe the magazine has continued to be a publication by, and for boarders - even if the hard work of typing and layout has been done by staff! To next year's editors, there's "no reward without effort" but be organised and start early!

Many thanks to those girls who have given their time and energy in producing and chasing up articles and photos. The quality of writing in Boarderline '93 is impressive and those who venture past this page will find great variety throughout. Congratulations to Patti Chier for winning the Best Article Section of the Boarderline Competition with her entry "The House".

We would especially like to acknowledge the contributions of Vanessa Holder and Cecily Pang. Vanessa, for adorning these pageswith photographs of the people and events of 1993, and Cecily, who produced the magnificent prize-winning front cover as well as providing articles & decorative page borders.

Also Lynnda Heard (M.L.C. Staff) has provided invaluable advice and help with the magazine's layout. -Special thanks to you all.

WELCOME ABOARD THE S.S. TIDDEMAN:

THE 1993 YEAR CRUISE.

A Boarding House can be likened to an ocean liner - a large, fullyequipped 'home away from home' which sets sail in late January, embarking on a journey towards December.

The passengers bring with them a few treasured possessions (books, laptops, doonas, photos and teddy bears), and move into their 'shared cabins' in preparation for the voyage ahead.

The "Voyage of 1993" has been an exciting one. We have seen many new things, and experienced some turbulence as well as calm days. The ship's crew has worked hard to organise the itinerary and ensure that things run to plan.

The hoardes arrived on Jan. 28th, were farewelled by emotional on lookers, and we were off! Our first port of call was Lorne, we spent the Saturday of the Closed Weekend shopping or lying on the beach praying for the sun to come out and some of the braver souls ventured into the sea. On the Sunday morning we formed a 110 person crocodile and took a train into the city to eat ice-creams at Southgate, then attended the 10 00a.m. service at St. Paul's Cathedral.

The serious purpose of the trip (to get an education) began on Tuesday and the memories of the summer holidays began to fade. Term 1 featured several highlights including the Induction of our Office Bearers (Boarders' Prefects); Open Day, when we were invaded by prospective students and curious tourists, and the traditional Easter Bonnet Parade the night before we broke up for Easter.

At the end of term we said 'Good-bye' to Miss Holmes, who returned to England. Sister Brown set off to travel overseas for a year and she was replaced by Sister Crough.

The major item on the Entertainment Calendar for Term 2 was Boarders' Birthday Night. The theme was 'The Sound of Music' and all the staff demonstrated their acting and singing limitations, and generally made fools of themselves. The Kitchen Staff prepared a huge Austrian feast and got in on the act by wearing costumes made of curtains.

Towards the end of the term Senior Wing was gradually severed from the rest of the House as the overpass was removed and we were left with two large holes in the walls. Unlike the Titanic the Boarding House did not go down entirely, and a huge Demolition Party was held in the Year 12 Common Room. The walls were

covered in memorabilia and signatures, and some girls still treasure pieces of the painted rubble which resemble fragments of the Berlin Wall Miss Andrews returned to England and we welcomed Miss Lamb aboard in Term 3.

The lashings of the wreckers' storm continued well into third term, however the girls returned to find a state of relative calm in the Boarding House. The Junior Boarding area (Lofts House) was opened for the girls in Years 7 to 9, and all the Year 12 girls were provided with new, modern and practical furniture. The Director was upgraded to first class quarters, as a new flat was renovated in the former Boarlers' Lounge Room

The boarders are very adaptable people, and they thought nothing of being soaked by floods from above in West Wing and having no hot water for one particular memorable weekend. In the same week, dinner and Prep by candlelight was quite a novelty when the power went off for four hours.

The major event in the Boarding House this year was the Boarders' Play - "The Perils of Lulu". This involved a huge cast and was a tremendous success, attracting visitors from far and wide (Melbourne and Victoria).

The Year 11 girls demonstrated their creativity, energy and organisational skills in the Very Special Kids Fun Day. The front gardens were transformed into a playground of activities (with an animal nursery, motorbike rides, picnic ground, handball corn petition and face painting) and a magician came to entertain the children and their families.

At the commencement of Term 4 two new GAP students arrived from England. Miss Judd and Miss Taylor have been quick to learn the ropes and get to know the boarders.

Term 4 is the final leg of the journey, and many Year 12 students disembark before the end of the cruise There was a rush to fit in Christmas Dinner and carols by candlelight, a farewell dinner for Year 12 students and the Boarders' Valedictory Dinner at a restaurant before their last day of school.

The rest of term has been more sedate in pace and girls of all levels have had to focus on their studies Towards the end of the year there is a series of Speech Nights and Final Assemblies, and gradually the various year levels

finish, pack up their belongings (which have tripled in quantity) and head for home for Christmas. Many of them to contemplate the next year's voyage on the S.S. Tiddernan or elsewhere

Just Call Me Leanne

When I first arrived at M.L.C. I was met by a sea of faces all checking out the new nurse. I soon discovered that I had a new name - "Sister!", and the worst part about it was that I answered to the name and still do! Everyone made me feel so very welcome and that was very much appreciated.

I was quickly introduced into the ways of the Boarding House with all the ailments that go along with it. I even found myself doing skits on Boarders' Birthday Night. I discovered that I'm definitely not an actress!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at M.L.C. with you all and, thank you for making this year such a memorable one for me.

Where do we come from?

OVERSEAS BOARDERS

One of the features of the Boarding House that makes it such an interesting & exciting place to be is the number of boarders who come from overseas. The Boarding House is made up of close to 40% of ..-------- overseas boarders. They come from places as far away as Japan, Ghana, Malaysia, '-'---------' Taiwan, V. Holder Singapore, Hong Kong, U.S.A, Scotland & the United Arab Emirates. Four overseas girls were interviewed to gain an insight into what it's like to be an overseas boarder at MLC:

1. What nationality are you?

Satsuki: Japanese

Vanessa: I'm an Australian citizen but I have lived in America for 15 years.

Swee Lin: Malaysian

Mei Chwin: Malaysian

2. What were your first impressions of the Boarding House?

Satsuki: I thought it was a little bit scary and stressful.

Vanessa: I thought it was quite good because I expected it to be all

dark, just from things I had read bout Boarding Houses, & other ones I had seen, like my brothers' schools, which were all grey & dark

Swee Lin: No one was here at first and I got stuck in the toilet and it was quite scary too because all the corridors were empty.

Mei Chwin: Before I stepped foot in the Boarding House I thought it was going to be terrible because of the types of people, but when I arrived it was fabulous.

3. What were the when you first arrived?

Satsuki: I had some problems with the language, but my .____________, English M C. Kang has improved.

Vanessa: I'd say all the friends that you make and room with. They are just always around you.

Swee Lin: Being with friends.

Mei Chwin: The people around, the excursions and the pool table.

5. What advice would you give a friend from home who was thinking about boarding at MLC?

Satsuki: I'd say that the Boarding House is really good and I think that she will miss her parents sometimes btil: there s always friends around you so I don't think it's so hard

Vanessa: Just to be really open when you first come, to make as many friends as you can because that's the best part of it.

Swee Lin: They have to be prepared for all the work, like kitchen duty & meal serving & all that because I didn't expect it. I guess it's good though because you learn to discipline yourself. Bring enough warm clothing because I didn't have enough . Don't eat too much!

Mei Chwin : Get prepared to do everything yourself and get prepared to give and take

Vanessa: I didn't really enco,::un::..:.:t:::;er:_____;;;.;J,.~;;;;;;.;.;;:.::;..:.:.;..:;:;.:.:=::..---------""' any.

Swee Lin: There were no friends that you could talk to and you had to get used to all the noise.

Mei Chwin: Only a slight discrimination amongst a few Australian girls and the Asians

4. What do enjoy most about living in the Boardin House?

Satsuki: I like it because I don't get into trouble from my mum.

Hi, hi, hi, my God are these the Boarders? I looked behind meare they talking to me? Hi, I'm Trudie, I'm Anne, I'mGabby, I'm Lisa .... all these names! How am I expected to remember them?

Justin. Dobsons had just sold me a size too big - I asked for black shoes not battle ships!

I was directed towards my room by one of the staff members . Here we are, Room 13. Hang on, the last time I looked I didn't

p E A N u T s My bloodpressure rose - Oh my God - am I turning red?

I think I am, my heart is beating at a very irregular paceAhhhhh!! M-U-M.

Hang on here, just a minute ....... what am I worried about?

This is cool, I can handle it, I'm cool ( pity I just tripped up the stairs in my new size 8 school shoes - all perfectly polishedanother trademark of a new student). I immediately resented the shopkeeper, thanks

have a Malaysian surname. This is just not my day. But no, don't despair. I spoke to a staff member and we established that I was pointed in the wrong direction. Finally, at the end of a maze of rooms, I found my own. I could hear the buzz of excitment emanating from the hallway where girls yelled with the newness and novelty of being back at school.

The buzzing outside was a stark contrast to the silence and stillness of my room. I stared in awe at the furniture and walls,

this was a relatively large room. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I wondered how many girls had sat at my desk and slept in my bed - the graffiti gave me some indication .

MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT LORNE

Blue sky, blue sea, waves, sand, tan, UV rays, Oakleys, Bob Marley, fish & chips, Frente, black sunnies, thongs, Mickey Mouse, beach towel, BBQ, bus, toilets, laughter, sea-folly, Fox FM, Saturday, babies crying, ice cream, fluffy clouds, dreadlocks.

On the bus trip there, Sara Marriott, Carolinna Lee, and Liz Tehan made everyone listen to "Jesus Christ Superstar".

As I began to unpack my personal belongings, mum arrived with my final suitcase and planted it on the floor We both started to unpack amidst a disturbing silence. Soon the suitcase was all unpacked and I caught a glimpse in mum's eyes - was it concern or sadness?

I hugged her - words would only add to the awkwardness of the situation. So mum was gone and I was left to contemplate this adventure, the Boarding House.

Getting dumped by a wave and having our bathers washed off!; Angela Lipshut & Sara Marriott on the trampoline!; Everyone singing really loudly on the trip back to the Boarding House .

Carolinna Lee, Yr 11

Dodging surfers who came straight at us in the water.

Liese McQueen Thomson was completely covered in sand - an experience she will always remember!

A "Hi Sexy" sign was flashed at every car that passed Bus 2!

The waves were big so it was good to body surf and the sun was out so we all got burnt There was also shops in case you got bored, or else you could sit in the bus! .. .What a great day!

Elizabeth Jesse, Year 8

Loud, beer-swilling yobbos drove through town in the back of a ute.

Chloe Tehan (the docile, sleepy one!), once again fell asleep only to wake up & find that when she had rolled over in her sleep she had acquired a mouthful of sand

On Bus 3 we had a rather unpleasant incident - poor old Bianca. Unfortunately her stomach could not hold down her breakfast and up it came all the way!. On the way back Bianca carried a black garbage bag, just in case!

Megan Shorland, Yr 10

Off the bus and straight to the toilets! Carolinna Lee & Lis Tehan decided the queue was too long, so they headed off towards the mens to check out the local talent & their availability!!!

Emly Dobson ("surfie chick") was strutting her stuff in the surf when she caught a wave and accidentally headbutted a sand bar!

It is tradition to spend the first weekend of the year with our fellow boarders Before the excursion, I thought that it was going to be a waste of time and really boring. However the first glance at the beautiful long beach proved that our long bus ride was well worth it!. .I was particularly impressed by a street artist who was drawing portraits for people [They]were truly magnificent.

Rohini Chari, Yr 11

Lynda and Louise nicked off to the cinema and watched "Under Siege" .

[The boarders] crowded the streets and beach searching for the perfect guy, t-shirt or wave!

Kate Dobson, Yr 9 ii

One building that is very prominent in the landscape of Kew is often taken for granted and its' details very much ignored by people. Of course, I am talking about the towering structure of Methodist Ladies' College, high above the roof tops of all the surrounding buildings.

From the Glenferrie railway station, one can immediately glimpse the structure as the train slowly pulls in. How many times have you walked to school and never really taken a close look at the intricately carved borders surrounding the exterior walls? Neither have I until I had to write an essay about it. I scrutinized every detail of the Boarding House from the inside out. The conclusion that I have come to is that this is indeed a very interesting place of which I knew nothing about. So off to 8

THE

HOUSE

the research centre, the school library, for some information on the building that houses 114 people ranging from the age of 12 to 20. Unfortunately, there was only one book that I could persuade the librarians to lend to meon M.L.C.

Many interesting things were discovered about the school. It was founded in 1882 by Reverend Dr. W.H. Fitchett who was

the first President and Principal of the school, and it became very

prosperous very soon. The building that is now the boarding house was once the main building of the school where the lessons were taught

downstairs and the boarders lived upstairs. During these early years, there were day girls, boarders, and half-boarders who had a hot lunch (or dinner as they used to call it) with the other full-boarders. There were pictures, old pictures in fact, of the dining room in this book. It still looks the same now, although the walls have recently been painted over with a sort of bright aqua colour that tries to convey the style of 'art-deco'. But with the wooden chairs that creak every time one comes to sit on them, and the splintered wooden tables and floors, it just hasn't worked.

The appearance of the dining room misleads people into thinking that the kitchen must look worse and therefore, that the food must be terrible. But contrary to popular belief, the food at the boarding house is wonderful. In the early days of boarding house life though, it was not so and one girl got into a little strife at breakfast:

1900' s. There are the corridors and stairs which can be transformed with ease into a scenario of the olden days if one has enough imagination. The high ceilings in the bedrooms are so typical of the homes in the early twentieth century and the steeple-shaped windows in Upper Tower reminds one of the age of this building. One can imagine daring girls running daintily through the corridors in white dresses pursuing each other. This would not have been unlike the wild '---------------------' screams of girls who

'No ham and eggs or a juicy steak for breakfast - porridge and toast, as much as one could eat, but when I shyly took a dish of marmalade to help the scantily buttered toast down, a teacher jogged my elbow, 'Scrape that off Millie! Either butter or jam but not together.' A more experienced neighbour quietly offered advice. 'Next time, take a piece of unbuttered toast, butter it and when no one is looking, turn it over and put jam on the other side. Don't get caught or you will lose a conduct mark. '1

This greatly contrasts with breakfast nowadays in the Boarding House where the Year 12's can have their breakfast in their common room and the other boarders can have it whenever they like between 7am and 8:30am during the school week. It is not as strict as a formal meal where everyone has to come down to breakfast at the same time.

Moving back to the main building, the interior of it tends to be a little disappointing after having seen the architectural beauty on the outside. One can just sense a tiny bit of what it must have been like in the early

now run through the corridors dressed in bright coloured shorts and t-shirtsrushing to their common room as fast as they can so that they do not miss one milli-second of 'Neighbours' straight after dinner. Some still have dessert in their mouths but the more polite ones take it up with them.

Someone, eons ago, felt that, ' as a day girl, she was less a part of the school than the boarders.'2 It is difficult not to feel like a part

of the school when one is there almost twenty four hours a day. This has its disadvantages of course. For example, one might be driven to throw oneself down the stairs like Nellie Fitchett who couldn't stand the pressure, or one could come back after death to haunt the Upper Tower box room because one hated the Boarding House so much. Or there was one girl who hung herself in the music school also because of Boarding House related reasons and is still haunting the West Wing today. But the Boarding House reflects the living as well. As new girls arrive, old ones leave. There is a constant renewal of life and each individual girl contributes some of herself to the house, either by graffitiing the wardrobes or by being the Senior Boarding House Prefect. These and other memorable things are what gives the Boarding House its' character and history.

"LIFE AS A GAPPY"

Well it's now two weeks until the end of term 2 and two weeks until I finish work. Gee this year's gone so quickly! This time last year I had just found out that I had been accepted into the GAP scheme and that in three months time I would be on my way to a school called M.L.C. in Melbourne, Australia. It was quite unbelievable at the time! Smiling sweetly throughout the interview had paid off after all!

After organising my insurance, visa, flight and baggage, I said a tearful goodbye to my family & set off on my 22 hour journey to "Oz". I haven't looked back since.

Both the staff & students in the Boarding House made me feel very welcome and I soon settled inalthough being called Miss Andrews did take some getting used to!

It is hard not to repeat what other 'Gappys' have said in earlier Boarder lines, so I'm not going to rabbit on about girls thinking I was a new Year 10 student or how weird your accents are. But I must say that some of the words you come out with are quite peculiar - I mean who ever came up with the idea of calling a good looking guy a 'spunk'!?*#

(Eds: The boarders thought Miss Andrews' boyfriend, Simon, was a bit of a 'spunk'!!)

However I must agree with most 'Gappys' and say how much I have fully enjoyed

has never been a dull moment. (Eds: Especially considering the way Miss Andrews spent her holidays e.g. bungee jumping & white water rafting in N.Z.!!)

If you are thinking of taking a year off after Year 12, then I fully recommend the GAP project and other similar schemes. It's an experience of a lifetime, and anyway what's the rush to go to uni? I believe you learn a lot more from a year abroad than you do in a year at college. Take the plunge, you'll love it!

I'm lucky enough to have seen a lot of Australia during the school holidays & I think your country is beautiful - if only I could stay longer. But no, it's back to school for me!

working at M. L.C. & that if I got the opportunity to do this again, I would jump at the chance. This year has been the best year of my life. There

My final word is that I haven't sat through all this dust and noise in the last few months for nothing. I want to see the end result of these renovations, so be warned I'll be back!

Cheers for now.

Take care.

When the words 'food' and 'Boarding House' are used in the same sentence people tend to generalise, and images of uneatable slop or revolting concoctions of meat flash through their minds. But here at M.L.C. boarding house we have subverted that stereotype: thanks to the fabulous five cooksMarion, Tracey, Helen, Julie and Annette.

Marion, who is better known as Mazza, is always bubbly and willing to give us extra food for recess, lunch or dinner. Tracey is well known amongst us for her loud voice and wild sense of humour. Annette, although quiet, is reliable for good and helpful advice. Helen is famous for her groovy and trendy dance moves, and Julie is guaranteed to cheer you with her extremely adorable smile. The kitchen is a bright and noisy area of the boarding house: the radio is constantly on and Tracey is singing along. Boarders are in and out having a good yam and showing something off, and there is usually a homely aroma of dinner cooking in the oven.

The kitchen has had a facelift this year - very impressive renovations. We, the boarders, have our own little kitchen equipped with a very convenient microwave and a fridge full of fruit and milk. The main cooking area, store room and Mazza's office have all been done up as well.

Cooking Up A Storm

Besides organising breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the fantastic five are also frantically busy with council functions, staff functions and Junior School Functions. On top of that there are several 'special' occasions in the Boarding House when extra

delicious meals

are carefully prepared. The year kicks off with a B.B.Q. in the front gardens; then there's Saint Valentine's Dinner, Easter Bonnet Parade Dinner, Boarders' Birthday Night, Boarders' Play Dinner, Christmas Dinner, Year 12 Farewell Dinner, plus the baking of a

Birthday Cake for every single boarder on their birthday. Each 'special' dinner gets more scrumptious and blissfully filling. At the Boarders' Play dinner we were introduced to deep fried camembert - a treat not to be forgotten. At Christmas dinner we were blessed with a mammoth Bomb Alaska, and at the Year 12 Farewell dinner we became intoxicated on non-alcoholic fruity cocktails.

We had the privilege of interviewing Mazzand her gang, and it turned out to be quite an amusing and interesting conversation. Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, we had to edit half of the dialogue. We did manage to squeeze out a few

juicy details of the life of a Boarding house cook though. They all agreed that the job was 'very fulfilling, extremely interesting, never tedious', and even 'stimulating!?!'. They said that it was different to other catering positions previously held, as here the atmosphere is very easy going and pleasant.

Another difference is that their boss is friendly. The five also told us about their disturbed eating habits ; constant picking; and how when they get bored they make unusual shapes with the dough. Overall, we got the impression that they generally have an extremely enjoyable time, eg. Annette spilling food dye, Tracey with crunchie ice cream all over her face, and Mazz relieving her bladder at the last minute!

The kitchen staff aren't just a couple of women cooking our meals : they are as much a part of this boarding house as the boarders. They are our friends and their time and effort is much appreciated. We are what we eat, so thank God for Mazz and the kitchen staff!

Words of advice to all the boarders from the kitchen staff - 'Eat, drink and be merry! But dean up your mess!'

Lofts House

"Girls, it's time to get up " and so begins a typical day at Lofts House.

Lofts House was established to accommodate the year 7 - 9' s during the demolition of senior wing and the construction of the new music school. Miss Falconer and Miss Johnson were given the challenge of playing 'Mum' to ten little angels!!!????

Lofts House is different from the Boarding House in that there are no bells, no bossy year 12's and more , access to the phone, the washing machine and most importantly FOOD! After some initial adjustments, we managed to adapt to a more intimate

environment, and much to the peak-hour motorists delight, we provide quite a show (comedy?) as we make our way to dinner.

Weekends at Lofts have been loads of fun. So far, we have

shopped at various locations, had numerous popcorn and video nights, cooked exotic gourmet (?) meals, been rollerblading at St. Kilda, visited

markets, seen movies and of course we have to mention sunbaking in our own private backyard. (Roll on summer )

We have tried to keep similar routines to those observed in the Boarding House. However, as we live in close proximity to each other, 'quiet' times are rarely achieved and prep around the dining table has led to some interesting discussions??!! There has been the occasional outburst (from both staff and boarders), but overall things have run smoothly and we look forward to Lofts going ahead next year.

We would like to thank the 'Pioneers' of Lofts House for their co-operation and input, and hope they have enjoyed the 'Lofts experience'.

The Place is a

Mad House

A loud scream is heard from the

8's and a quiet, serene bunch of girls from Year 9! The telephone is in the middle of it all, and once (twice .let's say three times) a night there is a yell from someone on the phone to "Shut Up!" The maximum time allowed on the phone is usually

House hate - washing and drying all the dirty dishes which other girls have left sitting by the sink, wiping up the mess left on the table and having to check the food supplies to see what needs replenishing. What a hassle!

Mistresses waking you upat 7am instead of a clanging bell is a good thing about living at Lofts, but with every good thing comes a bad thing - there is no chance whatsoever to sleep in until 8:15 for that last minute rush to school!

Having the 7 / 11 just across the road is also a luxury which none of the

PACKING TIME

A pressing concern for the Disorganized Boarder is the issue of packing. For term holidays all rooms have to be cleared and personal belongings are packed into suitcases & boxes and stored in the box room over the period. The box room is conveniently situated on the very top floor of the Boarding House, in Upper Tower, so that boarders on the lower floors can benefit from strenuous physical exercise while carrying suitcases and boxes up long flights of stairs.

The tiny box room, which can barely accommodate more than five people at one time, is supposed to hold the belongings of the whole boarding house. Needless to say, finding a place for ones' belongings in the box room is often difficult. Retrieving

your boxes can also be a problem. At the end of each term, boxes, suitcases and bags are piled right up to the ceiling, and totally block off the box room entrance. Just entering the room requires advanced gymnastics; one often finds herself, in the process of finding her bags, balancing on someone else's flimsy suitcase while shoving other luggage and boxes out of the way It is no surprise that boarders often emerge from the place strong and fit, not because of any physical training but just that they have gone through so many packing ventures.

The Systematic Boarder, a rarity in the boarding house and common only among the lower year levels, is not fazed by the prospect of packing. "Why, but it's exciting! I just love

emptying my cupboards & drawers and putting things into boxes. Trying to fit as many items as possible into a box challenges your problem solving abilities, whilst the trips of luggage-lugging up to the box room is physically stimulating . Don't you think?"

The Disorganized Boarder has much to learn from the Systematic Boarder in the area of packing. "Good packing is an acquired skill", SB advises. "The main thing to remember is to get organized.

"How?" DB would ask. SB always draws up a list before commencing packing. "Making a list helps enormously, because:

......;;;;.;;;;;;.;;;;;.;;.;;;.;;;.;;.;;;..;;;;;.;;;.....;;.;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;.;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;:=:========:..1 boarders at the indoor shower! Once again someone has touched the kitchen taps and the person in the shower has been sprayed with boiling hot or freezing cold water.

The toothpaste, shampoo and washing detergent disappear from the cupboards. Where do they go? There's also the race to reach the indoor shower before another person at 7am and the defeated look of the person who lost as she trudges towards the outdoor bathroom, to shower in the cold of the morning. These are some of the weird and wonderful things which occur down at Lofts House.

The place is a madhouse, filled with a laughing Year 7 representative, screaming Year

10 minutes (because it is our only phone, it takes incoming & outgoing calls) and if you go overtime you are usually bullied off. There is no mercy in this household!

Duty, once every two weeks, is a thing which the girls at Lofts

main boarding house have.

The atmosphere at Lofts House is lively and fun. The mistresses are nice and are always there for a chat. The experience of living at Lofts House in a small community is 'one for the books'

and the girls who are here next will certainly enjoy it!

1. writing down the items to be packed unclogs your mind; 2. the list helps identify where the items should be placed; 3. the list g6es on."

;\fter The List is drawn one can pack accordingly. Time management is an important factor to consider - too many DBs are known for statements such as "I've got a plane to catch in one hour and I haven't finished packing yet" on the last day of a term. The SB normally starts packing a week after they have unpacked at the start of a term. This allows her ample time to fit everything into her suitcases and find a good spot in the box room for them. DBs should observe this model packing behaviour, as they themselves always finish unpacking within a week at the start of term, and as end of term approaches they tend to leave packing till the last possible moment, when they have to pack up their whole room in one hour. In some cases the VDBs (Very Disorganized Boarders) fare better than their DB colleagues - because the VDBs never finished unpacking in the first place they find themselves in less strife when repacking time comes. DBs should either follow the SBs or the VDBs example.

Year 10s Hit Scotch

The year tens from West Wing can correctly say that we are the dancing lesson pioneers of Tiddeman Boarding House with Scotch College. After much stress and changing of minds as to what to wear, and claims of "I hate my shoes", "I hate my hair", "I'm not nervous", and the nonchalant saying of "I wonder if so and so is there", we were spruced, spring cleaned and full of beans every Friday night, ready for the bus to pick us up at seven o'clock.

Dancing lessons would

begin with much embarrassment over the choosing of partners from the wide selection of the opposite sex. And we mean a wide

selection, from the "I've only heard of flannelette shirts and acid wash jeans" and the "I couldn't use any more aftershave if I tried" to the BIG whip cracking, western style high heeled "I'm such a man" boots.

Of course the stress, pain and agony was brought to us tallies if you had to do the "slow, slow, quick-quick slow" of the Pride of Erin, with someone who couldn't even head butt you in the knee if he tried The end of each dancing lesson was a time for some to catch up on goss with guys from home, or casually chat with your partner. However, for many it was a time to see who could hide the longest from their partner, who couldn't wait to give you your potent cup of CORDIAL!

After that we were hurriedly rushed to the bus while trying to act real casual and not trip up the stairs while getting on the bus.

After every dance lesson there was many a heart beating wildly over the talent that our boarders saw in the romantic setting of the Scotch dining room. (Of course we heard no complaints from the freshly pumped testosteroned Scotchies!).

We have reason to believe that one local checkout chick direct from Coles, also posing as a part time model, contained all the essential

ingredients to attract the attention and star in many a fantasy of members from a nearby school starting with "S" and ending in "COTCH", and living in a house once occupied by one Robinson, first name Arthur.

We started off the season with a few untamed romances in the air although we are not naming names . The first love to plant its seed was that of a young chicky from Pakenham Upper, who set her sights upon a small, dark and perhaps handsome fella from dancing

by without exchanges of names, due to the reputations gained One particular nickname was given, of course she shall remain anonymous, but will be simply stated as 'what colour hair have you gone this week, fezza ?'.

One major highlight of this term was also the Sensational, Scotch Semi-formal. The few weeks beforehand were very anxiety ridden, full of 'oh, my gawd, I don't have anything to wear' stress as well as those who did the big last

minute job of getting shoes and stockings (some even bought

.' most of the outfit seconds beforehand).

classes . Their love meetings were short and sweet, but unfortunately the relationship died when the embers of love were just catching alight. Of course we had the usual three way love triangles of boy loves girl, girl hates boy, girl loves boy's best friend. But, due to confidentiality in this column, the girl from down South shall remain anonymous.

There were also those who had seen the burning desire in another's eye, and went to all measures including using her connections, to turn the spark into the raging bushfire of desire. But I suppose once a fezz always a fezz. Of course we had our frustrated types who may be small, but by no means were disadvantaged in having a good time - in the end though, they just gave up hope on the whole male species. I doubt a dancing class went

Much money was spent on outfits, especially the high heels, which were kicked off after five minutes of boogying. But the stress and anxiety was well worth the effort, and I can safely say that everyone had a great time Our partners were probably the biggest highlight, with many absolutely loving their living legend partners. Those who were a bit indifferent to their partners and mostly accepted them like you do an accessory, good for the first part of the night, were mostly left to their own devices after five minutes. We had the BIG Mr Cowboy boots partnering one of the more well known boarders, who apparently had a great night; an up and coming footy star; also the more quiet mathematical types, etcetera, etcetera, but everyone did have a great time and many friendships were formed.

The season of dancing classes ended on a high note, with most having a pretty cool time. For some it was good riddance to dancing, for others it was simpler now that they didn't have to be bothered getting stockings every week. But most agree that it was definitely worth it and next year's Scotch and MLC boarders' netball will prove to be the best it's ever been.

Boarders' Birthday Night

It was early on in second term when we woke up to 'Happy Birthday Girls it's seven o'clock'. Months of planning and suspicion had passed. The dining room played the part of a large birthday present waiting to be unwrapped, and on that night of May 20th we burst through the once heavily guarded doors to be surrounded by the 'Sounds of Music'. Parading before our eyes was our very own 'VonTrapp' family.

While videos were recording, cameras were flashing, and poses were made, the race was on to find 'that' place mat. Among our pile of decorations, presents were placed - those famous 'Boarders Are Best' pens. Hunger pains grew but they were soon settled by the filling three course meal, knocked up by the kitchen staff, clad in their frills. As we ate we observed that the room had been taken over by the appreciated helium balloons, ribbons and flowers.

After the final crumb of cake had

been swallowed we switched positions into the Assembly Hall which was staging the skits of the century. The mistresses sent up the building works, followed by the year seven and eights with their performance of "Sister Act" in white sheets, we were then entertained by Moko with her tap dancing routine. The curtains opened with a comedy from the year nines which introduced the models of year ten on the catwalk. This was followed by a quick 'Stomp' routine and then a fairy tale about the mistresses. The harmony of year eleven voices filled the hall with their songs and a few inclusions from the year twelves topped off the night. The evening concluded with a lovely supper. We're now waiting anxiously for the same time next year!!!!

Ode to Senior Wing

In the fine mist of sand and dust, Under the cold shaft of winter sunlight, Crystals of shattered glass glisten, In hills of plaster and bricks, and Bent pipes of naked metal, that Surround the block of granite grey.

Crumbling walls reveal an empty core; Bricks which were once concealed, Emerge from a swollen wound. Rooms, once confined, now nothing But disjointed walls and loosened planks; Wooden beams over empty spaces.

Amongst the disarray of destruction It crawls; Dust on its body like Sweat on industrious muscles; Dents cover its bulk like Scars on a soldier's body.

Reminders of victorious battles Against Laws of Physics, And architects' efforts; The walls are falling still.

The bulldozer

Moves with the swiftness of a spider

A small body on fat caterpillar tracks, An arm so long it could spike the sun, A metal fist so powerful

Its mere touch could smash a skull. With startling flexibility it moves,

The slender bones of steel, Its bulk of tractor wheels

With each strike of the blade, Each fall of a brick, Memories Come rushing back, Clouding the present with the past.

The debris has vanished, the house intact, The yard full of its usual assortment Of garbage bins, cars and cats. The windows open, faces appear Day after identical day; Windows slammed shut; The groan of the garbage truck In the early hours of each morning.

Mingling with sounds of crumbling bricks, Voices of by-gone days ring out.

Whereareyou? ... No, not today .. . We' re just going dawn the street Is there bread? Is she in? What tirne is dinner?

Tum it up Shut up Has the bell gone yet?

Muffled school bells and people

Running out, tripping over Bins and bags and cats.

Its arm reaches out, and Down it falls - the wall -

Very slowly. The wound bleeds with Dust and sand.

Then it is summer again, The concrete prison scorches with heat. Water bombs fired from anonymous windows

At people who dare cross our territory, Our yard. At night, Fierce humming of crickets mingles With laughter from the common room. Senior Wing stands under the moonlight, Pulsing with life.

The wall arches gracefully Before toppling; bricks fall. The vision of memory vaporises with Rising dust. Tractor at work again. Where my room once was is now Nothing. Thin air.

Senior Wing, half gone, stands Against the machine's vicious claws And crushing blows; Its defeat inevitable, but Under the winter sunlight It stands dignified and defiant, Quietly awaiting its Fate.

THE BOARDERS' SHOWERS

Having a shower at home is no big deal. It can occasionally be frustrating when the soap runs out, but it is generally just part of the everyday routine.

Washing yourself at boarding school is a different story. It doesn't take long for boarders to realise that even the seemingly simple task of keeping clean can be taken for granted. This is not designed to scare off potential boarders, but rather to warn of the showering experience so as to hopefully ensure comfort and prevent embarrassment.

For a new boarder, the most important thing to learn is the art of distinguishing the bad showers from the worse. In blocks of four or five showers, the unfortunate reality is that they are all connected to the same water supply and neither the flow of hot nor cold water is evenly distributed. The consequences are discovered when a fellow boarder either turns her shower on - in which case it is possible to catch pneumonia - or a rapid change in temperature has occurred, adjusting the taps does not necessarily restore conditions to a comfortable level because all the other occupants are adjusting as well. One has to be wary of the sadistic boarder who delights in purposely turning taps on and off to elicit squeals from innocent victims.

So in choosing a shower, care must be taken to obtain the one that hogs the hot water and at the same time maintains a

steady supply of cold. Testing each cubicle is one way of working it out, but a more efficient and less painful method is to observe the habits of old boarders. From having been through the experience, they are fully aware of the faults of every shower. The criteria for a decent shower-includes a water pressure greater than a dribble and taps that can be easily turned; a chair to place toiletries on and a hook to hang up clothes and a towel; a door that locks and, to prevent the muscle fatigue of using your arm as a prop, a shower rose that is securely screwed on.

The things to avoid are blocked drains, hair on soap and a shower with a window. (Even though the glass is translucent, apparently more than silhouettes can be seen from outside.)

When preparing for a shower it is also important not to take clean clothes, as they will inevitably end up in the wet.

Once inside a shower cubicle, priority number one is to lock the door. Early in the morning a tired boarder has no hesitation in barging in if the door reads 'vacant'. As the temperature of the water fluctuates for ninety per cent of the time in a shower, it is also imperative to be able to adjust the taps with ones' eyes closed.

Otherwise, getting stuck with soap in the eyes when the temperature drops can be a little awkward. The final word of ad vice for an incoming boarder

is never leave the bathroom attired in only a towel because visitors quite often come through the house. A visitor can include brothers, boyfriends and the occasional maintenance man.

After only a few weeks in the boarding house, the shower skills of every boarder are greatly improved and the longer they stay, the better adapted they become. Over time, the benefits of becoming a boarder can be recognised when one gains the ability to enjoy becoming clean as well as the power to inflict pain on others.

fVisiting Hours

I have been here before yet every time is different. Thoughts of people that were here yesterday now may not be here today.

I continue to walk towards the hospital.

The end of the passageway comes quickly, a roomful of elevators comes into view. A single finger is extended and the button is pressed. I wait.

Impatiently tapping my foot on the floor, sJwuld I take the stairs or should I stay? Time drags on and my anger grows, stomping to the stairway I feel as if I'm going to explode.

The elevator door opens with a pleasant 'ding'.

Every floor is identical in every way, it's quite hard to define if it's the right level. I step out at Level Seven Nurses with perfectly bleached white uniforms stroll by Strangers walk to and fro.

The smell of disinfectant is everywhere, surrounding everyone and everything. I walk down the cleaner than clean hallway and my sJwes squeak embarrassingly but I do not care

I Am Totally Behind You

There are always unhappy moments in life, when things do not turn out, the way you want. It happens to everyone, it is important that, as a friend, I should help you get through this stage. Right now, you might feel you were deeply humiliated, you might feel your privacy was invaded. you might feel that your life was shattered, and you are in need.

You must have millions of thoughts, revolving restlessly around your head. And it is often hard to understand, why God was so unfair. Or why it happened to you

There must be billions of questions, all tangled up inside you.

But remember one thing always, no matter how tough, how sad, or how disappointing life gets, there is always me, as a shoulder for you to lean on, as a pair of hands for you to hold on, and as a pair of ears to listen to you.

Anc,J even more, I will do my best, to help you, and to guide you, back to the road of life, happiness and hopefulness. As time had proven itself, it is the best cure for all things. But it oftens seems to help, to talk things through with a friend. So please do not hesitate, do not fear or be shy, I will always be here to listen to, your deepest thoughts and inward feelings I just want to let you know, that I care and I am concerned. You will have my deepest understanding, And always have my trust. I can promise you thisYou can count on me forever. And I will be with you till the sun extinguishes, and the stars fall from the sky. So I would like to let you knowI am totally behind you!

Year 11 Gossip!

It all started with the new furniture in East Wing, boy was it good! All the girls in the rest of the house were green with envy. We all had something to look forward to now. Carolinna however had better things to fill her mind. She was going to meet the man of her dreams - the Paul Mercurio! And we are still hearing about it!

Of course there had to be a drama. Angela had the chicken pox! She had them in every opening of her body and gosh she looked good. Mazz was in a terrible state as she had convinced herself that she had them - but it was only heat rash! We had the good old nit epidemic which goes around every year, but this time it only claimed a few victims. It was way back in first term when we had play auditions, and weren't they fun!!

Nard' s got her "L' s" this term, third time lucky - good old Deni RTA. First term came & went and we were soon flying into second term. This was the term when nearly every other Year 11 got their "L's". It was a very busy time for VicRoads in Camberwell!! !

During term 2 we witnessed the memorable Boarders' Birthday Night. Some of the Year 12s seemed to enjoy themselves at the expense of the Year 11s! Linda Osborne proved to be a real favourite at this time. Yes, this was the term that Linda was with Simon, or was it Adrian? Perhaps it may have been Michael - he was certainly creeping into the picture anyway.

This year the Year 11 Boarders decided they wanted a practise formal. However finding a partner was not an easy task as we were yet to have any netball

32

matches with Scotch. Priscilla Robertson & Tavia Rudd had the worst trouble. Like Nards with her "L' s" they were third time lucky- Priscilla ending up with a shared partner who was a set up! Over half of the boys who turned up were blind dates!!

The Year lls finally got their netball, and boy did they enjoy it. Whether it was for finding Formal partners or for winning the cup, we turned up rain, hail or shine!

Exams came up fairly quickly and they sure sprung some people out. Chemistry & Psychology lost a few students due to the exams, so did Maths Methods. However we fought our way through & were rewarded with the mid term break. The two weeks flew by and we were back.

The Social was first weekend back. It was a really good night with Karen finding more than a formal partner out of it! Marriott was in dire straights the week before the Year 11 Formal - she didn't have a partner, dress, shoes or stockings! Phoebe had lost her partner! Organization!!!!!

But we all made it & it was one hell of a night! After this there were more formals to go to. Sally Pearse found herself a mandazzling Dallas, the transport minister's son - and haven't we heard about it!

We found out during the year that if you are trying to find a phone you have no hope if Deirdre, Sue or Karen are looking for one - it's hopeless!

Also, new additions to the boarding house in '93 proved interesting. One of these was Sarah Philippe, known to us as

DREW. Along with her music making skills we found that we couldn't sleep - for fear of losing an eyebrow or two!! Liese was lucky enough to have experienced one being shaved

off. Revenge is sweet though! Yes, we all got her back!! She now has one brown eyebrow & one blonde eyebrow - call her BIM for short.

What a time we are having. We all tried to lose Linda's Michael Jackson CD, with Mazz & Drew being the most successful - 5 weeks without it, but Zoe spilt the beans & we' re all now blessed with MJ. Yes Linda loves her Michael's!

It is now the end of 3rd term and we farewell our great friend & room mate, Brooke. She will be greatly missed & we all hope to see her in the dayschool, not like Ange Veal. Siobhan successfully escaped from the boarding house to live with her mum, after hoaxing a few times to get a party out of it. Overall we have had a great year up until now & who knows what's in store for us next term!!!

Year 11

Scotch/M.L.C.

Boarders' Netball

Well finally it was our tum. Some of us had been waiting since 1991 when the netball with Scotch had first started. The next question was, who was going to run it? Sister was overseas and who else plays netball? Thank goodness we had Miss Johnson. Next a list went around asking if you had played netball. Of course everyone said they had played.

The netball had to be before our formal because, as many past netballers know, netball is a great place to find a formal partner. Next thing we know netball is not going to be once a week but three Sunday afternoons. There goes our chance of making a new 'friend'.

Finally the lists went up and everyone was trying to find out if the people on their team were good netballers or not. The first Sunday came. We all met in the dining room to hear the rules and then headed over to the P.E.C. for the first day of netball. We met our teams and started to play. It was quite a good day but the guys left straight away instead of staying for dinner like in other years.

Next term came and the next netball came. This was the day that decided the final ladder and who was going to be in the finals. There was tough competition and it seemed the guys liked to do screamers just to catch the netball. There were six teams. For the finals the 1st played 2nd, 3rd played 4th. Then the winner of 1st vs 2nd went straight into the final and the loser played the winner of 3rd vs 4th. There was also a play off for the winner of the Wooden Spoon!

At last the final day came. Everyone was all revved up to win. There was a minor hitch up

with the door being opened late. First off, 3rd vs 4th & 3rd managed to win by a goal (proving the proverb that cheats never prosper!). 2nd played 1st & 2nd won. That meant a match between the top team on the ladder playing the 3rd team to win a place in the final. 3rd managed to scrape a win and were looking good for the grand. It was a very exciting time! The underdogs were coming up to be in the final. The grand final was played over a longer time and in the end the underdogs were victorious winning three matches in a row.

Following the netball was a dinner with a special table for the winners. The netball plaque (the 'sacred plaque') was presented to the winning team. It ended quickly and then we played pool & watched Beverley Hills and The Simpsons. It was a pretty good breakup and all the netball people would really like to thank Miss Johnson and Sister Crough for umpiring.

Not being biased or anything, here is the list of the famous winning team who now have their names engraved on the PLAQUE and will forever be the legends of 1993 netball: Nadia Wilson, Sam (Fluffy) Jeffery, Ben Jesse, Chris Teasdale, Angus Hook, Karen Jolly, Stuart Barber, & Angela Lipshut.

OH WHAT A NIGHT! YEAR 11 FORMAL

When we first told a fellow Year 11 boarder that we were to write an article on the Year 11 Formal, her response was "Gee, do you remember it?!". But how could any of us ever forget. August the 7th 1993 was a night to go down in history.

As we walked into the before party we were surrounded by Madonna which strangely enough seemed to be coming out of the heater vents. Most people moved around and met everybody there, only too quick to put in a few good words about their home town. Our hosts were more than hospitable taking care that we were always satisfied, and well topped up!

Quite a few people ventured outside onto the verandah to check out the scenery and smell the fresh air!

After about an hour or so we all hopped into taxis and drove to Chaucers ....... .

Unfortunately, the anticipated introduction of our partners to Mr. Loader did not occur which was probably for the better, although most of us did not realise it at the time. Despite this, Dave stood out on the dance

floor bopping along in his sexy maroon velvet suit.

Guys in tuxes and girls in either very short or very long dresses joined together on the dance floor grooving along to songs that often consisted of more head banging than toe tapping.

Many photos were flashed, Cokes consumed, new friends were made, and songs were danced to before the formal ended. This might have been the end for some but not the boarders. With the motto "Party all night'' and the cab charge in one hand with the partner in the other we eagerly headed to the after party

finding ourselves to be the first people there.

Even the boarders who did not attend the formal made sure they didn't miss out on the action of the after party. Some of us were lucky enough to receive a decorative stamp on each hand on the way in. This helped the night to become Very J!ig! A lot of people danced but

many were happy to sit it out with their "close friends".

Eventually, in the wee hours of the morning, people began to head home with dresses, hairstyles and partners slightly less spectacular than they originally were.

So with the experiences of the Year 11 Formal behind us we' re

"I found the formal to be a very entertaining night which was enjoyed by everyone. Overall, ace night, Real Big!"

Phoebe Hill

"The formal was good. I really enjoyed it so much, especially the before party!!! I can't wait until next year."

set to make our Year 12 Formal even bigger and better! by Tavia Rudd & Karen Jolly

On the 29th of August the 'quiet' atmosphere of our boarding house turned into total chaos as many parents and children swarmed the front gardens for a day that would be long remembered. However for that one day of enjoyment for these terminally ill children & their families there were months of preparations by the Year 11 V.S.K. committee, staff & other students.

One of the biggest projects the committee had to take on was fund raising. This took many forms: chocolates were sold to the greedy day girls, a cake stall was manned, and closer to the date we had a mammoth car wash which nearly every Year 11 Boarder enthusiastically participated in. We raised $800 which went towards

helping to make the day fun & relaxing for everyone there.

For all Year lls the day started early. There were balloons to blow up, a dining room to transform into a live theatre, a picnic area to create & an animal nursery to set up. It was barely 10 o'clock when people started to arrive. The excitement was building for everyone!

Face painting was the first highlight. The most popular characters were the teenage mutant ninja turtles, but we had many clowns as well . The animals in the nursery never went hungry either.

We had plenty of other activities which were en joyed by all, ranging from the fire brigade, to a

It proved to be a successful day that will never be forgotten!

Very Special Kids Day

clown, a magic show, a handball competition and parachute games. The biggest highlight however, for young and old, was the visit by the motorcycle group - the Four B's! The rides went around the outskirts of the school picking up hair raising speeds & squeezing through impossible spaces. The rides also finished with big smiles!

At the conclusion of the day there were lucky dips for every member of the family. There was also a short presentation where thank yous were given to all those who participated. Finally the ceremonial letting go of the balloons was held. Each child had written their name and address on a piece of paper & attached it to a balloon in the hope that the person who found it would write to them

After that everyone started to leave, many being worn out from the big day. The clean-up was finished and darkness fell. To top off the big day though, we featured as a story on prime time news that night.

A Puzzle For You To Do

Answers to these puzzles are on page

THAT'S NO WAY TO GREET THE PREMIER

On Tuesday 24th August the Premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, came to speak to the Year 11 and 12 Politics students. However, some of us who don't do Politics were lucky enough to sneak in!

"That's no way to greet the Premier!", said a fellow boarder to an inappropriately dressed 'Mistress', as the Premier entered Betty Jackson Hall, a room filled with well presented girls.

Mr Kennett addressed the audience for about 30 minutes and then attempted to answer the numerous questions that followed. After speaking about education and taxes, he actually had to list the qualities he found in Mr Keating. (It took him a long time to answer this question!) He confessed he had nothing personally against the man, but you wouldn't catch them on their Sunday afternoons having family barbeques together!

Some girls had spent weeks preparing and hence having to learn their essay like questions to ask the Premier. Everyone had heard weeks, before hand, thanks to Suzan Aftasi, who had the task of learning this one ... ?"Premier, as Victoria is the manufacturing state of Australia, what are your feelings towards Dr. Hewson's plans to terminate tariffs and leave the economy to market forces?"

Afterwards Mr Kennett was bombarded for autographs and photographs, before being escorted to his car via the boarders' garden where he was confronted with the infamous boxer Badit, and other fellow sunbaking boarders!

BOARDING HOUSE

FASHION PARADE

On Thursday 26th August a Fashion Parade was held for our English Communication Project. Models were selected from the boarding house and from then on many rehearsals took place. The clothes were supplied by Esprit and the bathers were supplied by Surf Dive and Ski.

Hungry Dave, a DJ from FOX FM, came on the night to compere the parade, which was held in Betty Jackson Hall. The money raised was given towards the Boarding House Foster Child.

Thanks to all the models who did an ace job: Kate Dobson, Jill Hender, Sam Frankenburg, Susan Hosking, Phoebe Banks- Smith, Cate Prickett, Katrina Chung, Zoe Manton, Linda Osborne and Anne Steel. Also a big thanks to Carolinna Lee and Peta Barry for the Choreography. Jocelyn Finlay was Head of Backstage, and Sarah Prowse, George McDougall, Kirsty MacDonald and Bianca Thomas also helped out backstage, dressing models etc.

Megan Sweet and Sally Pearse did an excellent job on Lighting and Sound and how could we forget Drew on the Video and Nadia Wilson, Phoebe Hill and Angela Lipshut who were on the Door.

Also a huge thanks to the Kitchen Staff for organising the supper and bringing about twenty dinners up to BJ Hall on the night. BJ Hall was full, and hopefully everyone enjoyed it!!

HOWWE SURVIVED

We have all heard the VCE horror stories - impossible CATs, unreasonable deadlines, computer problems, sleepless nights, unbelievably high tertiary scores and most of all, overstressed and suicidal students. Strategic planning was therefore crucial to ensure that we, the poor Year 12s, were properly equipped to combat the adverse forces of the VCE.

The VCE is the ultimate test of organisational skills; large quantities of work deliberately and unsympathetically set so that students are under pressure throughout the entire year. We found most regrettably, that even the best time-management skills, and the most conscientious attitudes failed to alleviate these worrisome burdens. If only there were more hours in a day

Our sleeping habits were forced to undergo dramatic changes. Daily routines varied; but basically we had the choice of working until the early hours of the morning, and then catching a few hours of sleep before school the next day; or going to bed early after dinner, and then

waking at two or three in the morning to slave away. Prep time was simply not enough.

Life was tough, and little time could be spared. Reliable alarm clocks, with very annoying and persistent rings, were absolutely essential. Amazingly, even the irritating morning bells that go: "Clang! Clang! Crash! It's seven o'clock, girls" are not loud enough! Note - do not be too shocked when you see zombielike Year 12 boarders. Please have some sympathy.

For total preparation for the CATs, our weekend excursions consisted mainly of trips down to COLES to restock the junk food collections in our rooms.

Pringles' chips, Cadbury chocolate, Twisties and Tim Tams for the hungry stomach and the overworked brain, were essential fuels to keep us going through the long wintery nights. Lots and lots of spare change for the vending machine was also really helpful.

During gloomy and dreary nights when our sole companions were the monotonous electronic hum of computers, staying alert and

motivated was extremely difficult. We, therefore, had strong and potent cups of coffee readily available, or alternatively, noodles - the alltime favourite. It was important to check that the heaters in our rooms were always in superb working condition - there is nothing worse than trying to type on the computer with icycold, stiff fingers at four o'clock on a winter's morning.

Undeniably, Year 12 VCE is all about hardship and tears. Nevertheless, being a Boarder made life more bearable because there was always a companion to stay up all night with, a fellow student to get help from, and a friehd to talk to in times of trouble. Being a Year 12 boarder will definitely be one of our most unforgettable experiences ever.

When told that I had been voted in as the Boarders' Deputy Head

....________,Prefect for 1993, it took me by surprise. The fact that I had the power to be in authority (considering my height of 158cm) thrilled me, but at the same time I didn't know what was expected of a P:efect.

One thing is for sure, all Prefects enjoyed all the fortnightly meetings we had, either at Miss Topsom's or Mrs Broadway's

flat. Fruit, cakes, biscuits, hot chocolate with marshmallows, cheese platters and tons of other food delicacies were always waiting to be savoured.

Yummy!

We all had the chance to man the staff office, answer numerous calls from Scotch boys and mark boarders out on their daily excursions down Glenferrie Road. Though each of us was supposed to look after a year level, I was told that half of the Year 11s didn't even know that Cecily and I were their Prefects. Are you girls trying to say something? Even so, I think we have taken the time to know the names of all boarders and it was eat when the 'hellos' were

exchanged along the corridor of the 'Pink Palace'

It was good being a Prefect and having the privilege to work closely with the staff and boarders throughout the year. Best of luck for 1994 and we hope that the Prefects next year will have just as much fun as we did this year.

Lisa's Destiny: A quick climb up the corporate ladder will be followed by a happy and everlasting marriage to Aaron White, (with a few flings in exotic places).

Patti Chier: Patti is a lover of things artistic - photos, drawings, music and anything else of the artistic sort. In her old room in Senior Wing, Patti decorated the walls with flourishes and floral arrangements - not to mention with her passion, photography.

Patti is one of the lucky people to have travelled extensively whilst she's young (this may account for her fluency in French!). When Patti's not travelling around Europe, she is studying at her desk. Patti is a charismatic and considerate room mate, as well as a reliable friend.

Patti's Destiny: To study bacteria in sewerage on the streets of Paris and to be an accomplished Nudist photographer.

Michelle Goh: Dr Goh is notorious for her strange and very long sleeping hours, ability to not do homework, and her peculiar laugh. Michelle can often be found busily typing on her problem-prone computer whilst eating oranges She is extremely ticklish and has an intense hatred for Kiwi fruit. Although Michelle is absolutely brilliant in school, she has no sense of colour co-ordination Michelle is of ten seen in the Boarding House wearing an orange top and a pair of green tracksuit pants.

Michelle's Destiny: For all those who would like a discount liposuction, Dr. Gohs cosmetic surgery offers reasonable prices and complementary vitamin samples .

Vanessa Hallum: Vanessa is one of the aspiring young (or not so young) students of Year 12 who arrived at the Boarders' Entrance on the 29th January armed with her doona and various boxes. Not knowing any faces or where she was going, Vanessa trudged through the boarding house (Luckily she was the heavy weight stair dim bing champion - the two thousand steps around the boarding house was a cinch!)

Finally she found her room and unpacked Not before she was bombarded by ten girls all wanting her room - bad luck girls!!

Nowdays she can be seen hanging around the kitchen telling the kitchen staff about those troublesome CATS. She also tries to be popular with the mistresses, especially those on early bell who need the helping hand from Vanessa to get them out of bed early.

hazel eyes and her long brown hair. But there is a catch. She may portray the perfect woman on the outside, but boy, is she a DEVIL on the inside. Vanessa is merciless with her cutting comments and her sarcasm drives everyone insane. Her passion for dancing to Bobby Brown and AB Logic can distract the most conscientious student - me, of course-NOT! Vanessa is nicknamed the "Geek" due to her study habits -it takes her half an hour to get comfortable, an hour to open her books, two hours to figure out what she has to do, three hours to figure out she can't do it and four hours to make up excuses to tell her teacher. She is constantly asking/bugging her talented room mate to try out new hair styles for the numerous formals she has been invited to P.S The way to Vanessa's heart is through her stomach.

Vanessa's Destiny: To be a "Paparazzi" photograher, earning millions through blackmail of MLC boarders (eg: Joy bashing by Head, intoxicated Dep-Head in Hyatt bath-tub ).

Mei Chwin Kang: You are standing in the East Wing corridor and hear a sharp, highpitched wail. You cringe in agony. There is no doubt this is Mei Chwin, finding out she has a phone call. Mei - the constant supplier of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly magazines, money for the vending machine, eater of five bananas and ten Vitamin C tablets a day - is a cheerfu1 and easily hyped up person Mei's sweet and kind nature may be the result of her unusual preference for strawberry over chocolate - strawberry icecream, strawberry yoghurt, strawberry sundaes, strawberry lip-balm.

Mei Chwin's Destiny: The "Mei Chwin Kang Aerobic Workout" is now available on video Mei Chwin is a medically qualified aerobics instructor

Love Gabby, Jo and Trudie

Fiona 's Destiny: To collect the full range of cartoon character socks and star in "Neighbours" along side Phillip (Ian Rawlings)

Connie Papworth: Connie 's my second sister, although we don t have the same parents. As Connie is a boarder it is my duty to borrow her for weekends and dye her hair pink I love you lotsN arts! My experiences with Connie have been many and varied- the time she wrote her English CAT in 20 minutes

Constance May Papworth, best friend of Sarah since birth! The woman of the world, but I know she's Australian Unpredictable, brilliant, innocent, beautiful, kind and UNFORGETTABLE.

Connie 's Destiny: To own all the NBA Jam video Arcade games in Melbourne and win against Michael Jordan.

Suzy Linfoot: Socialite of the trio, Sooper Sooze ( as she is affectionately known) has been dubbed the male magnet of the Boarding House and her services have been called upon at many and varied occassions by her ever grateful friends Plyomerics and "I've got hair!" aside, we predict a bright future for Suzy

Suzy's Destiny: To be married at least four times with no children before she realises her potential as a single, well educated, intelligent career woman.

Aki Masuda: Always a smiling face, Aki' s sense of humour is enjoyed by all members of the Boarding House. Her fish Chiko is well visited, as her room is one of the best social spots in East Wing. A hard worker, Aki has overcome much to be a celebrated member of Year 12.

Coming to a strange country with no English is such a milestone to leap, but she has managed to combine her traditional Japanese upbringing with an inbuilt Aussie humour.

Aki will be sorely missed when she returns to Japan, but this will not dampen the bright future which lies ahead of her. Her ability to get along with everyone is renowned However, at the end of a colourful career, Aki will marry a very rich and handsome man and Good luck Aki and we'll miss you.

Aki's Destiny: To leave her future in the hands of fate but ensuring that she still has plenty of time to sleep in and watch T.V.

Angie Ng: Angie's someone you shouldn't miss out on in the Boarding House Being a Deputy Head Prefect and a good loyal friend is indeed hard, but she manages pretty well . She is always willing to lend a helping hand if you need one but , "WARNING"! Do not abuse this advantage for it will be hard to repay her. She can be grumpy at times but all in all you will see her smiling and chatting all the way. Not only does her adorable baby face capture the hearts of many but so too does her inner beauty. Why don't you get to know her and see if you can find the wonders Love Wai Ping

Angie s Destiny: To marry a Chocolate Factory owner, to be a famous graphics designer and to manufachtre the ideal bath tub for the alcohol inflicted

Cecily Pang: First impressions of Cecily are quiet, shy, timid and fragile - a porcelain doll. However her innocent exterior is deceiving. As Cec loves a good night out, she never misses a social event and suffers the consequences by being swamped by phone calls in the boarding house She excels at school, is artistically talented and loves Kenny G's saxophone Some of her unusual traits are that she is an extremely slow eater and that she has a fascination for coffee plungers . Cec is a warm and caring friend and her placid nature always has a calming effect in times of stress.

Cecliy s destiny: To be successful in whatever she does - as long as she can remember to look both ways before she crosses the road. Love Sally

Kate Pearse: Kate only joined the Boarding House this year but took little time to stamp her presence. After all, you couldn't miss her after our trip to Lorne, barbequed to a crisp and red as a beetroot.

Kate loves to collect useful objects, most importantly the eye-muffs acquired on planes, and the dental floss for hanging up calendars. Taxis for transport to Cam berwell are of course the most time-efficient for Kate (never mind about the cost) and she is a devoted, no obsessed, Madonna fan. Being Kate's room-mate is a sort of art-form, what with wrestling between her eagerness for "decorations", a ghastly dog-rug on the floor which has absolutely no colour co-ordination with the rest of the room & having to view her in pyjamas with a rather large hole in a most unfortunate position. Look forward to catching the rays with you on a Spanish beach with cocktail in hand, Love Oaire

Kate's Destiny: To own a Sports model B.M W., navy blue convertible, with compact disc and leather upholstery, have a bank balance with an abundance of zeros and to kiss a boy at least half her age

January 1994) possessing many talents including the ability to fill a small bowl of Weet-Bix, All Bran, Muesli and Rev without spilling it over the edge She has a burning urge to travel, however, currently she only makes it to her music lesson every Tuesday!! She has been my room mate for three terms, yes not only does she wear shrunken pyjamas, play Beethoven, U2 and the Carpenters on "our Stereo" but she is a sucker for punishment!! Austart Sterls, keep smiling party on and I will see you in the corporate world in my sports B.M.W

Lots of love, Kate.

Claire s Destiny: To be a Spanish speaking, violin playing Kahlua and milk drinking party animal (at Queens)

Connie Tan: Connie arrived here in January 1993. She is a kind, helpful and caring person . Connie loves sleeping in the afternoon Every time you enter the room after school or during prep you will find her sleeping like a sleepy-head

No wonder, she often goes to bed at 12am, lam or 3am. As well as sleeping, Connie loves eating, especially mandarins (she can eat up to nine every time she goes down the street) and noodles. Good luck for the future Connie, and hopefully you can get into Pharmacy in Victoria.

Connie' s Destiny: To be a child abuse counsellor and volunteer for scientific monitoring of sleeping habits . She will also develop her own special n~odle flavouring "Hot, Spicy and Smelly"

Gab Stone: Gabbs has been a true boarder since those early days in Year 9 when her neat room and matching M.L.C. hair ribbons were replaced by a state of messiness equal to our common room . Her trackies and boots are often found on the floor as she's adorned with only the best, to suit her social lifestyle Sneaky weekends, the cops at the Anglesea Pub and wfw could forget the night Gabbs will never live down, thanks for those patches of cabbage! - all remnants of her nocturnal pattern Don't be surprised if in the morning your greeting will be returned with a grunt enhanced by the spray of Berocca Underneath it all, Gabbs is a hard worker and it's a bright future the Yr.12

Boarders predict for her

Claire Sterling: Claire, better known to others as the "Ton~e Queen", joined the clan in 92 When one thinks of Oaire an image emerges of a slim netball player equipped with a loud voice, a well tuned violin and music notes circling around her well dried hair. She is a woman (although not 18 until 25th

Cabby's Destiny: To be the supreme reigning mistress of a white house with emerald lawns stretching far into the distance

She will be the mother of the most gorgeous, golden ringleted children and the proud owner of a white volkswagon.

Swee Lin Tan: "I'm 1623 words over the limit!" Six hours and 3 visits to the vending machine later, Swee is 1622 words over Swee is also well known for : brushing her teeth a thousand times a day, her companions, Peter and John who sleep with her every night, her relationship with her laptop, her hairless legs, her fear of the unknown, and questions like, "How does a baby get from the u terns to the stomach?" (Eds: Perhaps Mrs Broadway can help you with that one Swee!)

Swee Lin's Destiny: To own her own accounting firm "Cash and Tan", located next door to "Sizzlers". (She now owns the entire franchise)

Kate Taylor: Kate came to the boarding house in year 11. She is one of its' resident actresses, having long and dramatic phone calls and singing almost every where she goes You can tell if Kate's the one in the shower as she gives free concerts

Kate's Destiny: To star in the 75th remake of "The Sound Of Music"

Kelene Toh: Meet Kel (alias DORK) Yes to any ordinary person she does look innocent, but Beware! (Her fringe was specially cut to achieve this result). She never fails to turn a few heads and gain a few admirers here and there (especially when she dances completely by herself in the middle of the dance floor at socials to "Guns and Roses") Kelene has got a sharp tongue and she's a dangerous woman with toothpaste and her Rippa Sippa at 3 o'clock in the morning She spends hours putting on make-up to go out and its no wonder she wants to be a beautician Ironically, Kel is famous for her eating habits in the boarding house providing valuable support to the "Mi Goreng" noodle company, buying boxes at a time She's up till all hours of the morning doing last minute CAT'S & has eternal black rings under her eyes . Thanks for being a great friend & giving me the best term this year. Vanessa

Kelene's Destiny: To become a chemical engineer specializing in Asam Laksa prooflaptops.

Tanya Martinich:

Tammy Welch: Tamara Welch from Koriella is world renowned for her drinking ability (much to the annoyance of various Swinburne egos). "I'm having a late one Pete!'' is a phrase often used by this early bed 'goer' where school is concerned. The weekend is a different matter, where bed is not a 'goer' until the very early hours Tam is not often seen without Rob, her toasties, Nintendo Game Boy and Kenny Hoof in tow. These items however have not hampered her ambitions in the Hotel Management field She will be well remembered by her flock of friends Gabs, Jo, Trina, Anne, Fee and Pete and they hope she will do them the same honour from her future corporate position.

Tammy's Destiny: To manage a HOTEL with plenty of administration corridors for 'entertaining' visitors.

Emily Bri"ham: Our newest addition to the Boarding House, at only two weeks old, Em has astounded everyone by her easy adaptation to the institution as a true boarder and year 12 member. It was only a couple of days before that she was seen watching television when she ought to have been studying. She is yet to earn her place among the honest drinkers, but we have had a good indication that this will not be a problem. We wish her all the best and hope she will remember her humble friends from the top of fame and fortune.

Emily's Destiny: To be a barefoot, yet talented art student, trying to scratch out a living from behind the counter of Macca' s.

Wai Ping Wong: On the outer, Wai-Ping may appear to be shy and softly spoken. However, after roaming with her for the last couple of years, there are times when a magical energy in her is only waiting to be let loose. Her face tells of love for friends and her lips curve into a smile wherever she goes She is not only beautifuf from the outside but her heart and soul are always willing to lend a helping hand. There's nothing like the winning of laughter and love from friends like Wai-Ping. Lots of love, Angie.

Wai Ping's Destiny: To become the Director of a boardinghouse.
