DEAN TORRENCE Jan and Dean were an American rock duo consisting of Jan Berry (April 3, 1941 – March 26, 2004) and Dean Torrence. In the early 1960s, they were pioneers of the California Sound and vocal surf music styles popularized by the Beach Boys. Among their most successful songs was 1963’s “Surf City”, the first surf song to top the Hot 100. Their other charting top 10 singles were “Drag City” (1963), “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” (1964), and “Dead Man’s Curve” (1964); the last was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. DEAN TORRENCE: In 1972, Dean Torrence won the Grammy Award for Best Album Cover for the psychedelic rock band Pollution’s first eponymous 1971 album, and was nominated three other times in the same category for albums of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In 2013, Torrence’s design contribution of the Surf City Allstars “In Concert” CD was named a Silver Award of Distinction at the Communicator Awards competition. THE SURF CITY ALLSTARS The SURF CITY ALLSTARS are the only band in the world to have played and sang lead vocals in both the Beach Boys band and the Jan&Dean band. The Surf City AllStars: DAVID LOGEMAN (drums): David is the leader of the Surf City Allstars and started the band in 1999. David started his surf music career back in the 80s by joining Jan&Dean. It was at a Jan&Dean show where David first performed with Original Beach Boy Brian Wilson. In 1995, Mile Love of the Beach Boys hired David and David got to perform with all the surviving members of the Beach Boys. PHILIP BARDOWELL (guitar/vocals): Philip knew David Logeman from playing together in Jan&Dean. Original Beach Boy Carl Wilson hand picked Philip to be in the Beach Boys. When Carl passed on, Philip sang lead vocals with the Beach Boys singing all of the songs Carl used to sing. Philip toured the world for years with the Beach Boys before joining the Surf City Allstars. CHRIS FARMER: (bass/vocals): Chris was in the Jan&Dean band in 1983 when he met David Logeman at a recording studio. Mike Love then hired Chris into the Beach Boys band. Chris played bass in the Beach Boys, sang lead vocals with them, and was the musical director for the Beach Boys for 12 years. If there ever was a surf music all star, it is Chris Farmer. AARON BROERING (keys/vocals): Aaron has a long history in surf music. He was an extra player in Jan&Dean shows where he met all of the Surf City Allstars. Aaron went on to do Greatest Hits of the Beach Boys Shows with two of the original Beach Boys. Aaron became a full time member of the Allstars in 2013. RICKY LEWIS (lead guitar/vocals): All the guys in the Allstars have known Ricky for years and years. He is the newest addition to the band. Ricky is a long time member of the famous instrumental surf music group, The Chantays. The Chantays had the huge hit record, Pipeline, in 1963. Ricky was asked to be an extra musician in many Greatest Hits of Jan&Dean and the Beach Boys Shows. David Logeman calls Ricky the greatest living surf guitar player in the world.

ABOUT SOKA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Soka Performing Arts Center is located on the beautiful hilltop campus of Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo. Our facility includes the 1,032seat Concert Hall featuring world-class acoustics designed by master acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, designer of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, among many others. We also have an intimate 350-seat Black Box Theatre that allows for multiple seating configurations including club seating with bistro tables. More than 750 performances have taken place since the center’s dedication on May 27, 2011. The 2023-24 season marks our twelfth season presenting first-class programming in our world-class concert hall. We are continuing to expand our programming and outreach with the addition of a Children’s Concert Series, Blues Festival, and the only Great Pianists Series on the West Coast. From classical and jazz to world and contemporary music, the Soka Performing Arts Center has become a prized space for artists and audiences alike. We are proud to be the home of the Pacific Symphony Chamber Orchestra. Our Sundays @ Soka Series with Pacific Symphony continues to be one of our most popular series year after year. Our presentations with other Orange County arts organizations have enabled us to reach further into our community to offer arts education and programming. Our partnership with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County includes our PSOC Series, which brings superlative artists to our stage. We also partner with PSOC for our Outreach Program, bringing over 7,000 school children to Soka Performing Arts Center to experience live performances with outstanding musicians. With its world-class acoustics and first-class performances, Soka Performing Arts Center is quickly becoming one of the cultural jewels of Orange County.
