e’re debuting a terrific program this month. Please join me in welcoming The Culture Show, our new arts and culture hour that premieres on Fridays from 2–3pm on GBH 89.7. It’s designed to provide fresh, expanded arts coverage, hosted by Jared Bowen. We’ll shine a spotlight on theater, music, museums, movies, TV, food and books. This show is made for radio but will be streamed on YouTube and also aired in segments on GBH 2. You can read all the details on page 13. Also new this month is this version of EXPLORE GBH. As of this issue, we’ll be in print every other month: This is the November/December issue (see page 16 for December highlights). The next print issue will be the January/February issue, and so forth. Each print issue will contain a feature article, the full primetime TV schedule, along with television, radio and streaming highlights. Additionally, every month we will email you a digital version of the magazine, which includes an easy-toread, printable primetime TV schedule. This film explores the ways we look at art and history at a time of racial reckoning. The story focuses on a dispute over historic murals in San Francisco that depict the life of George Washington, a man who Seneca leaders called “Town Destroyer” after he ordered their villages destroyed during the Revolutionary War. The murals, painted in 1936 by artist Victor Arnautoff, a student of Diego Rivera, both praise Washington and—rare for the time—critically depict him directing the bloody seizure of Native lands. ith the launch of The Culture Show this month, GBH 89.7 listeners will get an insider’s view of the arts landscape with an expansive look at diverse local artists and the big talent and productions that play in the region. “This will be a cultural hub—covering theater, fashion, music, movies, TV, food and more—that people plug into when they want to join the conversation,” said executive producer Chelsea Merz, who was for almost 10 years the executive producer for Boston Public Radio, GBH News’ most successful show. “This is for people who want to know what’s going on and hear from the artists who are making this a vibrant and interesting place to live.” The program will launch on November 3 as a Fridays-only week in review in the 2–3pm slot following Boston Public Radio. On December 4, the 2pm radio broadcast debuts daily, Monday through Friday. “This is a significant expansion of our local arts and culture programming,” said Pam Johnston, general manager of GBH News. Bringing inspirational arts and culture programming to the local community has been a vital part of GBH’s mission and history for more than 70 years. “I hope the program brings listeners a deeper sense of what it takes to create art and the opportunity to see art where they didn’t before,” said Merz. Jared Bowen (below, left) is the show’s host and three of GBH’s most esteemed and experienced journalists join him to form the ensemble cast— (left to right) James Bennett II, Callie Crossley and Edgar B. They know they’re having an honest conversation.” Crossley, with her longstanding passion for the arts and humanities, “brings her curiosity, passion and depth as a thinker and interviewer,” said Merz. “Anybody who walks away from a conversation with her feels heard and understood. Chineke! Orchestra Performs in Boston T

une in on Sunday, November 26, at 7pm to listen to Chineke! Orchestra, part of CRB In Concert with the Celebrity Series of Boston. Founded in 2015, the orchestra champions change and celebrates diversity through high-level professional performance opportunities and career development for Black and ethnically diverse classical performers. Stewart Goodyear’s “Callaloo: A Caribbean Suite” is at the center of the concert. The composer is the piano soloist in a piece that draws on his roots from Trinidad with crackling Calypso and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Andrew Grams also conducts works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Florence Price in a concert The Boston Globe described as one of “superb musicianship and a sense of unbridled, authentic joy.”

Pulling Back the Ivy on Higher Education

Massachusetts Wetlands Protected Despite Supreme Court Ruling

merican colleges and universities sell students and families an expensive vision of success, but their inner workings can be more complicated. A new podcast “College Uncovered” pulls back the ivy to reveal how higher education really works. The GBH News podcast is a collaboration with The Hechinger Report. It is co-hosted by Kirk Carapezza, a managing editor and higher education correspondent at GBH News, Jon Marcus (The Hechinger Report’s education editor) and guest reporters. Carapezza says the podcast aims to reveal challenges and offer actionable insights to prospective students and parents on the path to higher education. One episode digs into the challenges many students face when transferring credits between two-year and four-year institutions and the need for more transparency in credit transfer policies at some colleges and universities. Another episode examines how some elite universities admit students as sophomores, a little-known policy universities use to balance their enrollments and take students who might otherwise not make the cut on the first try. “College Uncovered” is supported in part by a grant from Lumina Foundation and available now. Jeremy earned recognition for his coverage of wildfires for KQED Public Radio, receiving a Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism Award for breaking news. His reporting has been featured on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, The California Report, BBC News and The PBS NewsHour. Originally from Ohio, Siegel holds a degree in rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley.

The ruling, however, will have no effect on state laws in Massachusetts. Scott Jackson, professor of environmental conservation at UMass Amherst and co-writer of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act regulations, says that concerns still linger about the proximity of septic systems and development, which introduce pollutants that harm the habitat. In Massachusetts, the amount of wetlands has increased due to increased beaver activity and sea-level rise. The main challenge for Massachusetts will be preserving wetland quality in the face of encroaching development.

What’s Cooking on GBH?

Chiles en Nogada A

lex Thomopoulos (right) is in sunny San Diego, exploring the local Mexican cuisine that reigns supreme. Chefs Priscilla Curiel and Juan Gomez share their innovative spins on traditional Mexican dishes, and Chef Curiel prepares chiles en nogada for a rooftop fiesta that celebrates family, tradition and the Mexican soul of this seaside paradise. Watch it come together on Moveable Feast on Sat (11/11) at 11:30am on GBH 2.

INGREDIENTS Serves five CHILE FILLING: 5 poblano chiles, peeled and fried

• • 1 green apple, diced • 1 pear, diced • 1 peach, diced • 3 oz pine nuts • 4 oz raisins • 3 oz visnaga (Mexican sugar candy from cactus)

• / onion, diced • 4 garlic cloves, minced 1

• / lb ground pork • / lb ground beef • Salt and pepper • 2 tomatoes, diced 1 1

WALNUT SAUCE:

• 4 cups Mexican crema • 1 cup of sugar • 5 tbsp sherry wine • 10 walnuts • 2 tbsp cinnamon • Pomegranate seeds

TO PREPARE STEP 1 Fry the chiles for about 5 minutes each. Put on ice after taking them out of the fryer. STEP 2 Peel the chiles in the water. While the chiles rest, chop and organize the fruits and vegetables in separate bowls. STEP 3 Heat oil in a hot pan. First, caramelize the onion, then add the garlic. After, add the ground pork and beef, and heat until almost fully cooked. STEP 4 Add the fruits and vegetables into the pan. Cook for about 20 minutes to get a desired picadillo mixture. STEP 5 For the sauce, pour the crema into the hot pan and let it rest for 3 minutes until the texture becomes more liquidy. Then, add the sugar and sherry. STEP 6 Add the walnuts to the crema and cook. Then, add 2 tbsp of cinnamon. STEP 7 Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Use a mesh strainer for an even smoother sauce. STEP 8 Fill the chiles with the picadillo and pour the sauce over. Garnish with pomegranate seeds and serve.
