THE WELLNESS CENTER SUPPORTING ACTIVE MINDS and strong bodies Mr. Delgrosso, the Athletic Director at Pocono Mountain West High School, says, “The idea for the new facility was inspired by a long-term vision to complete the turf stadium complex, which began with the addition of home bleachers in 2020 and culminated in the construction of the concession stand and Wellness Center in 2025.”

This project supports the school’s athletic vision by improving the existing complex and providing a versatile, year-round practice space for all 18 athletic teams.

Equipped with six basketball hoops, two drop-down batting cages, ample space, and equipment, the facility offers immediate and lasting benefits for student-athletes and coaches by supporting consistent training and program growth.

Pocono Mountain West High School recentl y celebrated a significant milestone in its histor y by dedicating its gymnasium to honor Brad Pensyl , a legendar y figure in the local basketball community.

The gym, now known as the Brad Pensyl Gymnasium, stands as a tribute to his remarkable contributions both as a player and a coach.

Brad Pensyl's journey began at Bangor High School , where he left an indelible mark by setting singleseason records for points, scoring average, and most p o i n t s i n a g a m e d u r i n g h i s s e n i o r y e a r i n 1 9 78 .

Under the mentorship of his father, Bill Pensyl , a r e s p e c t e d c o a c h a n d L e h i g h Va l l e y B a s k e t b a l l H a l l o f Fame inductee, Brad Pensyl achieved an illustrious high school career. After battling cancer for the past six years, Bill proudl y ser ved as his son’s presenter at the Januar y 2025 induction ceremony.

Following his playing days, Pensyl transitioned to a coaching career that spanned 28 seasons in the Pocono Mountain School District. His tenure included 15 years at Pocono Mountain West, where he served as the first athletic director and head boy s' basketball coach. During this time, he led the Panthers to remarkable success with a 300–91 record, never missing the District 11 playoffs, and winning multiple league and district titles.

With over 10 players reaching the 1,000-point milestone under his guidance and his 2017 Coach of t h e Ye a r a w a r d , P e n s y l ' s l e g a c y c o n t i n u e s t o i n s p i r e future generations. The dedication ceremony was a hear tfelt moment, highlighting not just his athletic achievements but his enduring influence on the community.

ANTI-VAPE Breathing is a privilege—don't take it for granted.

Vaping may look harmless, but it carries real consequences. The nicotine hooks your brain fast, rewiring it for addiction and making it harder to focus, sleep, or cope without another hit. The chemicals you inhale can inflame and scar your lungs, leading to chronic coughing, shortness of breath, and long-term breathing problems. Over time, it strains your heart, damages blood vessels, and increases the risk of serious disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What starts as flavored vapor can quietly turn into dependency, declining health, and a body that pays the price long after the cloud fades.

Addiction wrapped in neon Addiction to vaping often begins subtly, driven by curiosity, peer influence, stress, or the appeal of sweet flavors and sleek devices, but the real hook is nicotine. This highly addictive substance rapidly alters brain chemistry.

When someone inhales nicotine, it reaches the brain within seconds and triggers the release of dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, creating a brief feeling of relaxation, focus, or satisfaction.

The brain quickly learns to associate vaping with this rewarding sensation and starts to crave it, especially during moments of boredom, anxiety, or social interaction.

Over time, repeated exposure changes the brain’s reward pathways, reducing its natural dopamine production and making the person feel irritable, restless, or low without nicotine. This leads to tolerance, meaning more frequent or stronger hits are needed to achieve the same effect, reinforcing the cycle, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Meet the Security Guards

Paul Haggerty has dedicated 21 years to serving as a security guard, a role he finds especially rewarding because of the daily interactions he enjoys with staff, students, and members of the community—often just by walking along Main Street.

A typical day for Paul begins with a shift briefing, followed by heading to the Clear Run Campus to assist with traffic. Afterward, he returns to the Sullivan Trail campus, where he conducts building and campus patrols, ensuring all doors are properly locked and secure. His vigilance and friendly presence help maintain a safe environment for students and staff alike.

Paul takes pride in balancing professionalism with a positive attitude. He believes the key is knowing when it’s appropriate to share a laugh and when to remain focused and serious.

Outside of work, Paul values time at home with his wife and their dogs. He enjoys working in the yard or tinkering in the garage. With a wife who teaches at Clear Run, two grown children living on their own, and four energetic puppies, life at home is always busy—and full of joy.

Michael Cole has served as a security guard for the Pocono Mountain School District for 18 years, taking great pride in being part of the first line of defense for the safety of students and staff. He approaches his role with a strong sense of responsibility, ensuring that safety is always taken seriously. A typical day for Mike begins with overseeing traffic flow, ensuring buses, staff, students, and visitors can safely enter and exit the school grounds.

Throughout the day, he patrols buildings to ensure there are no security breaches or lapses, remaining vigilant at all times. He is also among the first to respond to any situation—whether an emergency or a routine concern—demonstrating his commitment to keeping the school community secure. Mike especially values his time at West High School, where he appreciates the strong sense of family, camaraderie, and pride shared among staff and students.

He balances professionalism with approachability by treating everyone with respect in both his words and actions, often using a lighthearted tone to connect with students and show that he’s not just an authority figure, but someone they can relate to. Outside of work, Mike enjoys going on walks with his spouse, watching documentaries, and attending church.

His faith is an important part of his life, guiding him in maintaining a strong, faithbased walk with Jesus Christ. One of the most rewarding aspects of Mike’s career is seeing former students out in the community, grown and thriving with families of their own. Being able to tell them, “I’m proud of you—you made it!” is a moment he truly cherishes.

Guy Sheppard has proudly served as a security guard with the Pocono Mountain School District for the past three years, following two years of prior experience in the field. What he values most about his role is being the first line of defense in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on campus.

He especially enjoys the natural beauty and wildlife around the school, as well as the friendly and welcoming atmosphere shared by both staff and students. Guy’s top priority is creating a positive and secure environment for all, regardless of the challenges individuals may face inside or outside of school.

He takes pride in building connections with students, often engaging in conversations about school and professional sports, while always reinforcing that safety comes first. Outside of work, Guy enjoys spending time with friends, taking walks with his two beloved German Shepherds, and traveling and exploring new foods with his wife.

Originally from Trenton, New Jersey, Guy attended a culinary vocational school where he played both football and wrestled. After graduating, he pursued masonry in college while continuing to play football. He later moved to the Poconos to be closer to family and spent several years working as a chef before transitioning into a career in security about five years ago. Guy is deeply grateful for the opportunities his career has provided and is honored to serve in a role that allows him to help protect and support both staff and students in the district.

Ms. Sanchez

Ms. Sanchez is an 11th-grade English Language Arts teacher, specializing in the British Literature curriculum.

With

four

years

of

teaching

experience, she truly enjoys her profession. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, graphic design, building LEGO sets, and shopping. Among these, her top passions are reading and graphic design.

As a child, her mother would take her to the New York Public Library in Astoria, where her love for reading blossomed. She discovered her interest in graphic design during a middle school class. Her enthusiasm for reading significantly enhances her teaching, while her graphic design skills inspire innovative project ideas for her students.

Ms. Seigfried

Ms. Siegfried is a dedicated teacher of Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry at Pocono Mountain West High School. Her passion for teaching is matched only by her love for baking! Having spent her childhood baking alongside her grandmother, she has mastered the art of creating bread, pies, cakes, and cookies. She delights in sweet treats, and the ability to craft them herself brings her immense joy, as she cherishes homemade goodies and can whip them up whenever she pleases. Over time, she has also learned to prepare exquisite desserts such as tiramisu, pumpkin roll, and opera cake.

LUNCH LADIES

Behind the scenes of our school cafeteria are the hardworking women who prepare and serve meals to students every single day. We had the privilege of photographing a few of them and learning more about their dedication. These lunch ladies wake up early each morning to arrive on time and prepare breakfast for the entire student body. As soon as breakfast ends, they immediately begin working on lunch, making over 838 hot meals daily. Despite their essential role, they are often overlooked. Yet, they are the reason every student has access to food throughout the school day. Their efforts ensure that everyone is fed with nutritious meals, free of charge.

Our lunch staff members shared that helping students and seeing them enjoy their meals make the job worthwhile. Small moments, like a simple “thank you” from a student, can make a big difference in their day. These interactions remind them that their hard work does not go unnoticed. In addition to cooking and serving food, they also make sure everything is clean, organized, and running smoothly. From maintaining kitchen safety to managing time efficiently, their responsibilities go far beyond what most students see. Each meal served is the result of hours of preparation, coordination, and effort.

Built on compassion and a shared passion for teaching This trio’s friendship began in the summer of 2021, when they were all newly hired English teachers starting their careers together. Being close in age and new to teaching, they quickly bonded over shared experiences, forming a connection that grew naturally from day one. What started with simple moments—like sharing lunch and talking about their days—developed into a strong friendship built on trust, humor, and support. They rely on each other for advice, encouragement, and collaboration, helping one another grow both personally and professionally.

Their friendship continues to make a positive impact on their daily lives at school, bringing laughter and energy to even the busiest days. Whether they’re exchanging ideas, venting in their group chat, or sharing inside jokes, they’ve created a strong support system. Outside the classroom, their bond extends through traditions like Friendsgiving, holiday gift exchanges, and weekend get-togethers. Built on compassion and a shared passion for teaching, their friendship not only strengthens their own experiences but also contributes to a welcoming and supportive school community.

Mr. Porcoro and Mr. Dickerson Creating a welcoming and a spirited environment Their friendship began almost instantly when they started teaching near each other, forming a natural connection built on shared experiences, similar backgrounds, and a mutual love of humor, sports, and skiing.

What started as quick conversations in the hallway quickly developed into a strong bond that now plays a big role in their daily lives at school. Their days are filled with laughter, playful joking, and a steady exchange of energy that keeps things light, even during busy or stressful times. Whether they’re greeting students during morning duty, serving as “hype men” at graduation, or jokingly referencing each other in their classrooms, their friendship is visible and adds to the positive atmosphere around them.

Outside of school, their connection continues through weekend activities like skiing, road trips, and supporting school athletics. They stay in touch year-round, often texting, calling, and sharing jokes, showing that their friendship goes far beyond the workplace. While they joke about competition and never being wrong, there’s a clear sense of mutual respect and support that has helped them both grow as teachers.

Mr. Dickerson and Mr. Porcoro’s friendship not only makes their own experience more enjoyable but also contributes to a welcoming and spirited environment for the students around them.

West High School Science National Honor Society 2025-2026

Mrs. Long has served as the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) advisor for the past four years. She currently teaches Academic Chemistry and Honors Chemistry. Her favorite aspect of advising SNHS is providing students with opportunities to expand their scientific knowledge and explore their interests beyond the classroom. She supports this growth by organizing guest speakers, coordinating field trips, and facilitating community service initiatives. One of her favorite events each year is the Night of STEM, held on April 13th.

The Science National Honor Society (SNHS) is dedicated to promoting scientific awareness, academic excellence, and community service. It currently has 58 members. The organization holds bimonthly meetings to explore and highlight specific scientific topics within the school community. SNHS members actively participate in a variety of school-wide and local charitable initiatives.

One of the organization’s primary service projects is supporting the school’s clothing closet and food pantry. Members contribute by donating canned goods, toiletries, and schoolappropriate clothing. In addition, SNHS participates in School-to-Work program collections and has organized fundraising efforts to benefit local animal shelters.

Want to Join?

Membership in SNHS is based on academic achievement and commitment to excellence. To be eligible, students must: Be currently enrolled in an Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) science course, or have successfully completed one, maintain a minimum average of 92% in all science courses, and maintain an overall GPA of 92% or higher.

Throughout the year, SNHS engages in a variety of academic and service-oriented activities. Recent initiatives have included promoting fire safety awareness through educational posters, researching Nobel Prize–winning scientists and showcasing their work during the holiday season, and creating a Periodic Table highlighting contributions of Hispanic and African American scientists and historical figures.

Members are expected to earn three participation points per month. Points may be earned by attending meetings, contributing to monthly science initiatives, participating in community service projects, attending field trips, and engaging with guest speakers.

Aevidum: The Soil to Help You Grow Aevidum, our cherished school club, is comprised of imaginative students dedicated to advocating for mental health. These individuals devise innovative methods to honor and uplift those who deserve to be heard, yet finding the courage to voice their concerns can be challenging.

When asked what Aevidum is all about, the advisor, Mrs. Hewitt, shares. “Aevidum is a student-led program. Its statement is: ‘I’ve got your back.’ There's a big hand symbol, and the reason Aevidum came about was that there was a student in Lancaster County who actually committed suicide; the staff, students, and teachers all wanted to find a way to do something to help students get recognized for their mental health.”

Mrs. Hewitt also shares her reasons for wanting to run Aevidum, “Mental health has always been a big thing for me. In high school, I was also a big advocate for mental health. I was the type of person who always wrote little notes and handed them out to people randomly in school; it's a passion of mine. So when I realized that Aevidum was a club here at West High School, I said, you know, that sounds like exactly what I want to do. So let's do it, right?”

The Bundle of Roots Q&A “What made you want to advocate for the mental health of others?”

Jolmarie Martinez, a fellow member of Aevidum, shares, “Seeing how a lot of people want to be a part of something, but sometimes, it's so hard to speak on experiences that you may not always have experienced. I’m someone who wants to be able to help everyone, regardless of whether I had been in their shoes or not, because I feel like everyone should get the help that they need.”

“What does Aveidum mean to you?”

Alexina Ongirki shares her connection with Aveidum, “I really resonate with getting to know other members and getting to do stuff around the school to help others, like, recognizing, you know, mental health and the importance of it.”

“How does a Aevidum improve your day-to-day thinking and or decisions?”

I’ve got your back

Eva Huss shares how Aevidum has changed her. “I feel like since I've joined Aevidum, I've woken up and have just a better mindset about how the day is gonna go, and I can't wait to go to school and see what's gonna happen for the rest of the day. Rather than, oh, I have to go to school.”

From the Poconos to the Big Stage:

By Hannah Bossuyt, Madison Clark, Dayana Sorto, & Leo Aragona-Young For many students, the halls of Pocono Mountain West High School are a place of beginnings, but for Rob Felicetti (Class of 2004), they were the backdrop for a journey that would eventually lead him to headline Wembley Arena. Now the bassist and vocalist for the world-renowned pop-punk band Bowling for Soup, Felicetti recently shared his reflections on his path from a local student to a professional musician.

Roots in the Poconos Felicetti’s musical journey didn't start in a practice room, but rather in the local scene. At just 13 years old, he started a band with his brother and a friend, playing "everywhere and anywhere" they could. While he notes that they were "terrible at first," that initial drive to play was fueled by a unique connection to punk rock —a genre he felt was "his thing" at a time when few others in school were listening to it.

Though he admits he never formally studied music or learned to read it while in school, he credits specific teachers for their immense support. "Mr. Steinruck was always encouraging me to keep doing it," Felicetti recalled, adding that his art teacher, Mr. James, was a vital mentor throughout all four years of high school.

Mr. James taught more than just art, offering life lessons that Felicetti says have stayed with him to this day.

Joining Bowling for Soup After graduating in 2004, Felicetti continued to hone his craft while attending Penn State and touring with various bands. His "big break" with Bowling for Soup came in 2017 when the band’s lead singer, Jaret Reddick, called him to fill in for the Warped Tour.

"We didn’t even rehearse," Felicetti said. "We just showed up, and at the end of that first show, I already felt more comfortable with that band than any other before.” What started as a fill-in role quickly became permanent, with Felicetti becoming an equal partner in the band’s songwriting and creative direction.

An Interview with Bowling for Soup’s Rob Felicetti

Life on the Road and Beyond Despite the glamour of performing at iconic venues like Manchester, England—his favorite place to play— Felicetti is quick to point out the discipline required for a music career. He compares the dedication needed to that of law or medicine, noting that while it may look like all fun and games, it takes immense work to succeed.

Even with global success, Felicetti hasn't forgotten his roots. He recently worked on a new record at a studio right here in the Poconos.

Advice for Aspiring Musicians For current students looking to follow in his footsteps, Felicetti offers a simple but powerful philosophy: "If it’s not fun and enjoyable, don’t do it.”

He emphasizes that while the industry is difficult, the joy of performing is what makes it worthwhile. "If it stops being fun for you, stop doing it.”

From the Class of 2004 to the global stage, Rob Felicetti serves as a reminder to all Pocono Mountain students that, with passion, supportive mentors, and a little bit of punk-rock spirit, you can go anywhere.

Mr. Cusatis: Meet Mr. Cusatis! A guidance counselor who teaches career guidance to every student at least once during their years at West. He is a straightforward careerplanning educator dedicated to helping students succeed. Whether you are planning to become a doctor, a construction worker, or even a fellow hard-working educator like him, you can trust that Mr. Cusatis will guide you toward the proper steps to achieve your future goals and aspirations! During this class, students will focus on how to properly write their resumes for jobs and help them complete a well-puttogether college application.

Eden Seese, a student aspiring to work in the medical field, shared how Mr. Cusatis’s careers class provided her with practical skills and knowledge.

“A lot of the stuff that we learned in his class, I wouldn't know without him telling me about it. I wouldn't know when the SATs were. I wouldn't know how to sign up for them. I wouldn't know how to make a resume. I wouldn't know how to do a lot of the things he teaches.”

Throughout his years of teaching, many other students have shared their gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Cusatis and his helpful guidance on everything from resumes to finding the right career to finding financial advice. Mr. Cusatis and his career class help students understand it overall, highlighting the class's role in supporting student growth and knowledge.

Worthy of Recognition!

Did you know Mr. Cusatis is a sports lover? Before becoming West High School’s favorite and only careers teacher, Mr. Cusatis played for Penn State’s sports teams. He played basketball in both high school and college! Mr. Cusatis began coaching in 1987 at Hazleton and in 1996 at Pocono Mountain. He has been involved in sports, specifically basketball and football, and has grown to love track and field over time. Fun fact: Mr. Cusatis is also in the hall of fame in Hazleton. The Hazleton Area Sports Hall of Fame is where you can find him in his time of glory. Mr. Cusatis was one of the best basketball players in Hazleton!

Although Mr. Cusatis loves sports, he also loves his job as a careers educator!

He was asked, “What is something you love about the subject you teach?”

He replied, “I love the subject I teach, Career Education, because one of the biggest decisions we make is what career path we are pursuing. We spend more time in our lives working than in any other activity. If I can help someone in this regard, it may change their life and the life of future generations.“ Clearly, helping change lives makes his day brighter.

FROM THE POCONOS TO THE PHILLIES: “Being involved in so many different things while at PMWHS helped prepare me for this career.”

During her time at West, Caroline was involved in a little bit of everything. She balanced multiple sports while participating in clubs such as SADD, SACC, Yearbook, and HYPED magazine, all while maintaining strong academics.

The leadership roles Caroline held in high school helped her develop skills she now uses daily, such as event planning, communication, creativity, and juggling multiple projects at once.

One of Caroline's biggest influences at West was Coach Stacy Perryman, who was nothing but supportive and encouraging. “She instilled in me the importance of hard work, discipline, leadership, and believing in yourself like no other.”

“She knew my potential and always pushed me toward it. She was one of the greatest leaders and mentors I’ve ever had, and I will carry her legacy and the values she taught me forever.” Caroline graduated from Pocono Mountain West in 2020.

A DREAM IN SPORTS Sports were always a huge part of her life. Every weekend growing up was spent either at tournaments, watching games, or being around them in some way. So when the time came to choose a career path, the decision felt almost natural.

Caroline expressed, “I couldn’t picture my life without sports - so I figured, why not work in sports and be around something I love every day? Sports are my passion. It was my dream to work for a professional sports team, and I didn’t stop until I got there.”

This opportunity arose through her connection with her professor, who was the hiring manager. Having excelled in his class and nurtured a strong relationship with him, she reached out to inquire about the internship. During her time as an intern, she managed inbound calls from fans purchasing tickets, supported game-day operations, and assisted various departments with various events.

ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

Caroline's message to PMWHS students is simple. Get involved and put yourself out there. “I can’t emphasize enough how much the high school and college clubs I was in helped prepare me for where I am now.” She also encourages students to attend job fairs and networking events and to apply for internships. Getting involved will help you meet people, see a professional setting, force you to have conversations with strangers, figure out what you want to do, and get out of your comfort zone. Even as an intern, she played a key role in the trip’s success, working alongside her manager to ensure every detail was seamless—from coordinating hotels and group transportation to arranging airport pickups, game access, and exclusive events.

It’s a complex operation that demands precision and adaptability, all with the goal of creating an effortless experience for ownership.

Now, Caroline continues to lead these efforts, traveling to Clearwater annually to execute the trip firsthand. It’s a responsibility she values deeply—and one of the most rewarding and enjoyable parts of her job.

Caroline attended Arcadia University, where she played collegiate soccer and earned a B.A. in Sports Management. After her freshman season was cut short due to COVID, she decided to extend her time at the university to utilize her final season of eligibility, graduating in December 2024.

Fresh Fresh Starts Starts at at Bagel Bagel’N’ ’N’Go Go

“During the peak winter months, summer months, and weekends, we are drastically more busy than the weekdays. Tourists are a big part of our business, because we are right across from Great Wolf Lodge, seven minutes from both Kalahari and Camelback. I live about fifteen minutes from my job, so it is not a horrible trip. When we have winter weather, such as snow or ice, it really is dangerous driving.

The elevation difference between the bagel store and my house is over 1,000 feet, so the drive there is all downhill with sharp curves.” - M. P.

Working this job helps Maya with other challenges outside the bagel store. Her job helps her handle pressure without breaking because rushes force you to prioritize, move quickly, and multitask, especially when someone has called out or when it’s understaffed. These are the same skills that she needs for exams and deadlines.

“BE NICE TO PEOPLE AND YOUR COWORKERS. This makes your job so much easier and more enjoyable.”

Maya appreciates being able to get hands-on experience in a real business while learning from people that she trusts. She also feels the community feels more real and not as abstract.

Maya Palka, a senior at Pocono Mountain West High School, works part-time at her family's local bagel shop, Bagel' N' Go. She balances serving customers with her schoolwork, taking orders, operating the cash register, making sandwiches, and occasionally baking bagels.

She's been with Bagel' N' Go since it opened in December 2018.

Elijah Lopez is in 10th grade and has been working at Kalahari as a lifeguard for almost a year now. His job includes getting wet and jumping in the water, unlike many other jobs in the area. Working here has helped his grades, and he’s made many friends and pretty much knows almost everyone there.

One thing he would change is the hot air and moisture while working.

Life-Saving Lessons: Elijah’s Journey at Kalahari

“I have a favorite coworker, and his name is Patrick. He is a Rhino, which means he is above me.”

Elijah’s job involves ensuring the safety and well-being of guests. He recalls a time when he didn’t pass a test, and a supervisor advised him to apply more pressure during chest compressions. Elijah followed that advice, which proved invaluable in a real-life scenario where he had to save someone.

For instance, if an adult loses consciousness, the first step is to check for responsiveness and ensure they have a pulse and are breathing. If they aren’t, a device called the BigEasy® CPR Rescue Breathing Mask is used. This inflatable air apparatus has an opening to deliver breaths and is placed over the person’s mouth to blow air into the lungs if they aren’t breathing. If necessary, CPR is performed, involving chest compressions.

Once the individual regains consciousness, Elijah carefully elevates their leg and turns them onto their side, away from him.

Game Plan for Success!

Coach McCarroll

Coach McCarroll has served as the Varsity Football coach for 24 years, bringing decades of experience and a deep passion for the sport. A former high school and collegiate football player, he was inspired to pursue coaching out of his love for the game. After graduating from college, he returned to the Pocono Mountains and began coaching there 34 years ago, laying the foundation for a long and impactful career.

According to Coach McCarroll, most students earn a place on the team; however, cuts may occur based on academic performance, attendance, behavior, and overall commitment. Under his leadership, the team has posted a strong regular-season record of 7–3 and achieved major milestones, including the MVC Championship in 2007 and the Eastern Conference Championship in 2016.

One of the most anticipated traditions of the program is the annual rivalry game against Pocono Mountain East, where both teams compete for the Pride of the Mountain trophy.

Coach McCarroll’s favorite part of coaching is guiding young athletes as they develop skills and values that extend far beyond the football field. He emphasizes the importance of preparation and strategy, believing that consistent film study and careful game planning are essential for success.

If he could share one message with his team before any game, practice, or championship, it would be: “Go out and do your best, and create a game plan to help you succeed.”

Outside of coaching, Coach McCarroll has been a dedicated educator for 33 years and currently serves as an ISS teacher.

He has been married for 25 years and is the proud father of three college-aged children. As a passionate Notre Dame fan, he enjoys traveling whenever he can.

The Coach Behind the Stopwatch Coach Palazzi has served as both the Track and Field and Cross Country coach for the past 17 years. She entered coaching to share her passion for the sport and inspire her athletes to discover their potential. She values being part of each athlete’s development and takes pride in helping them push toward their personal best.

Team selection under Coach Palazzi is based on clear expectations: attendance, academic performance, effort, and attitude. She believes every student has the opportunity to grow, improve, and find success in one or more events.

The program has a strong history of excellence, including at least one state qualifier in Track and Field every year since the school opened, as well as numerous state, district, and league medalists.

Coach Palazzi has coached several standout athletes, including: Kaya Meler (Class of 2024): the fastest female athlete in school history in Cross Country, a school record holder in both XC and Track and Field, and holder of multiple class records. Kaya also achieved the highest state meet placement in school history for XC, finishing 26th.

Ella Bray (Class of 2022): One of the two highest‑placing district runners in school history for XC, alongside Kaya. Both qualified for the state meet.

Shawn Belfon, Jr.: The second‑fastest male athlete in school history, a Track and Field school record holder, and the holder of multiple class records in both XC and TF.

Her favorite aspect of coaching is supporting athletes throughout their journey—celebrating their achievements on the good days and encouraging them through the challenging ones. If she could offer one message before any meet, practice, or competition, it would be: “Always do your best, and remember every day is another chance to make yourself proud.”

Outside of coaching, Coach Palazzi enjoys watching and playing sports, baking—especially Italian cookies—and spending time with her family and her dog, Jax.

A Coach who Chases the Count

Coach Behr is currently in her 31st year as a cheerleading coach, bringing decades of experience, energy, and dedication to the program. She balances her responsibilities as both a coach and a teacher by focusing her coaching efforts after school hours— though her commitment often extends well beyond that. She also enjoys being present in the building throughout the day to support her athletes in any way she can.

Her love for cheerleading began at the age of five and continued through high school, college, and even the National Cheerleaders Association. As she explains, “It has always been in my blood and something I have always enjoyed. I always wanted to spread the joy that cheerleading has brought me with others.” Team selection under Coach Behr is based on a combination of talent, dedication, behavior, academic performance, and experience.

She evaluates the specific roles needed—bases, flyers, and back spots—to ensure complete and balanced stunt groups. Tumbling skills are an added advantage during the selection process.

Competition is Coach Behr’s favorite aspect of cheerleading.

Although the road to competition often comes with challenges such as injuries or inconsistent commitment, she believes the payoff is worth every obstacle. As she describes it, “When the team takes the mat for those 2.5 minutes, it all comes together, and I jump around like a lunatic—it is all worth it!”

Beyond athletic performance, Coach Behr prioritizes developing her athletes as individuals. She strives to teach accountability, positive communication, teamwork, and the value of dedicating oneself to something meaningful. If she could share one message with her team before any game, practice, or competition, it would be: “With all of the obstacles we face throughout the season, we always find a way through —and now it is our time to shine. We cheer for everyone else all season, and now it is our turn to shine for ourselves. No matter what happens on the mat, the pride I have in my heart as your coach is immeasurable.”

Outside of school, Coach Behr is the proud mother of a senior at West High School, who plays football and basketball. She cherishes the chance to attend his games and support him alongside her team. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, photography, and creating custom shirts and crafts— hobbies she truly loves. As for retirement, Coach Behr often jokes, “I will retire next year, but with my passion, it is difficult to let go. We will see what the future holds!”

A COACH WHO BUILDS CHAMPIONS Coach Kloiber has dedicated 34 years to coaching, working with numerous teams throughout his career. His coaching journey began in 2011 when his son encouraged him to take on the role. Earlier in his career, from 1989 to 1992, he coached his brother at Parkland.

Team selection under Coach Kloiber is determined through wrestle‑offs, with the winner earning the starting position. While straightforward, he acknowledges that the process still involves some level of subjectivity.

What Coach Kloiber values most about coaching wrestling is witnessing his athletes accomplish their goals and achieve the dreams they have worked toward. If he could offer one message to his team before any match, practice, or tournament, it would be: “Anyone can beat anyone at any given time.”

During his tenure at Pocono Mountain West High School, Coach Kloiber has guided athletes and teams to numerous accomplishments, including a second‑place team finish at the Chulada Duals in Honesdale. Under his leadership, Brandon Stiehler became a district champion, a Northeast Regional runner‑up, and placed seventh in the state. Greg Bensley earned titles as a district champion, a regional champion, and placed third and eighth in the state.

Outside of coaching, Mr. Kloiber enjoys fishing, rock hounding, and gardening. He is supported by his wife of 33 years, their three children, and two dogs.

Coach Williams has been coaching for 24 years, bringing extensive experience and leadership to the basketball program. Before becoming the Varsity Head Coach at West High School—now in his ninth year—he previously coached at the 7th‑grade, 8th‑grade, and junior varsity levels.

Defense, Dimes, and Determination

During the 2023–2024 season, Coach Williams led his team to the District XI 5A Championship, a significant accomplishment for the program. One of the team’s most anticipated matchups each year is their rivalr y game against the Pocono Mountain East Cardinals.

Coach Williams’ favorite part of coaching is hel ping his players grow into responsible, confident young men beyond the basketball court. As he often tells them, “The ball will stop bouncing for you soon after graduating high school . Your children and wife will not care one bit about how good or bad a basketball player you were.”

As a student‑athlete himself, Coach Williams played point guard at the original Pocono Mountain High School—now Pocono Mountain East—from 1992 to 1995 under his mentor and former West Head Coach, Brad Pensyl . He ser ved as a team captain and still holds several assist records at the school . If he could share one message with his team before taking the court, it would be: “Play the Best Way.” To him, that means honoring the players who came before them, competing with relentless effort, and taking pride in the name on the front of their jersey s.

Defensive intensity is the foundation of his coaching philosophy. He believes the best path to victor y is to “hang their hats” on the defensive end, entering ever y game with clear expectations and standards that the players practice and understand daily.

Outside of school , Coach Williams ser ves as the Executive Director of Team Fermin A AU, a nonprofit organization founded through the vision of Christian Fermin, a Top 100 all‑state player who now competes at the Division I level for VCU. When he finds time to unwind, Coach Williams enjoy s traveling with his family to Bethany Beach, Delaware.

The Roaring Twenties was an era filled with Jazz, flappers, and the pursuit of fame and fortune.

The Pocono Mountain West Drama Club vividly brought this vibrant decade to life through the spectacular musical "Chicago." This production highlighted the absurdities of the criminal justice system, portraying criminals who twisted their narratives for the sake of celebrity status. The story revolved around Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, two women who vied for the attention of Billy Flynn, a charismatic lawyer, in their quest for fame.

Velma Kelly, a glamorous, narcissistic, and sociopathic woman arrested for the murders of her sister and husband, was played by the talented Merissa Moore.

Q: What inspired you to join the musical?

A: Mr. James convinced me to join my first year, and I didn't even know there was a musical. Ever since then, I have enjoyed every bit of it and wouldn't trade it for the world. What inspires me now is how it changes lives and can truly have a positive effect on students.

Q: What drew you to audition for Velma Kelly?

A: Velma is different from any other character I have played before. She is more humorous, and for my final year, I wanted to showcase the more natural side of myself.

Q: What is the funniest thing that has happened during the musical?

A: Throwing Miss Bayacon (our musical spirit animal) around the stage and laughing with everyone about it.

Roxie Heart is a narcissistic, vain, desperate woman who cares only about being famous, no matter the cost; she does not care about the people who love her. The lovely Bella Pavuk played her.

Q: What is your favorite part about playing Roxie?

A: My favorite part about playing "Roxie" is that I get to put forth my own interpretation of the character and portray her as I envision her. I also get to sing and especially dance more than I have in previous shows we have put on.

Q: What's been the most rewarding part?

A: The most rewarding part of being a part of this program is all the bonds I have created, the memories I have shared, and the true joy that comes from performing.

Q: What's something most people don't realize goes into putting on a musical?

A: A lot more goes into the musical than the audience can see. We start auditions in October and work incredibly hard up until the show. To make the show as incredible as it is, as students, we attend 8 PM rehearsals weekly, help develop and teach choreography to the rest of the cast, and memorize all our lines and music.

A: The thing that drew me to this role was how entertaining his part was; he didn’t let anyone act like they were better than him.

A: That it is a fantastic opportunity that you shouldn’t miss out on, and it’s a great way to find new people and friends.

William Dimaren-Ferguson is a junior at Pocono Mountain West. William has been playing volleyball his whole life and has enjoyed playing for West. William describes an obstacle he overcame on the court, "Freshman year, I remember the senior outside of an opposing team making my arms very red, I couldn't pass his hits. Eventually, at the end of the game, I was able to pass at least 1."

William is a team player and likes to include everyone on his team.

Drake Daguio is a senior at Pocono Mountain West. Drake started playing volleyball last year and has already made tremendous progress in his skill and ability on the court. No matter what, Drake always talks positively to his teammates instead of talking down on them. Especially during mistakes.” Drake wants to go on to play volleyball in college and is currently focused on enhancing his skills for the current volleyball season.

Luc Arana is a junior at Pocono Mountain West. Last year, a bunch of Luc’s friends got him to join the volleyball team, and he has excelled ever since. Luc describes himself as strong, enthusiastic, and a happy player. He contributes to the team by always cheering them on and helping them with their mistakes.
