C A P E F E A R VA L L E Y ME DIC A L CE N T E R Fayetteville, NC Since its opening, Cape Fear Valley Hospital has grown from a 200-bed county hospital into today’s major medical center with 524 licensed beds and specialties in heart care, cancer treatment and surgical services. As demands continued to stress the original facility, Little was engaged in 2017 for campus master planning to identify growth zones for both inpatient and outpatient services, generate site options for adding parking, develop concepts for improved and expanded inpatient rooms, recommend future expansion options both horizontal and vertical.

MASTER PLANNING

Little River, SC The design team at Little Diversified Architectural Consulting developed a master plan for McLeod Health at Seacoast Hospital in Little River, SC. They conducted interviews, reviewed the existing facility, and created options for campus expansion. The final plan includes site circulation, infrastructure improvements, additional parking, and an expanded central energy plant. New construction will include surgery and ICU expansion, a bed tower, and an enlarged emergency department. Existing services like the lab, pharmacy, and imaging will be renovated. The hospital will grow by 136 beds. The team worked with a contractor to develop construction phases and cost estimates. They are currently building a staff parking deck to address shortages and create space for expansion.

HO SPICE OF T HE UP S TAT E Anderson, SC Master Facility Plan Hospice of the Upstate established the first hospice in SC in 1998 on a 55 acre campus in the eastern area of the county. The recent changes to Hospice care reimbursement created the opportunity for their Board of Directors to undertake a master facility plan to align their new strategic plan with their aging facility of 50,000 SF. The Little team kicked off the project with a visioning session focused on gaining input from diverse representatives from the community, the clinical and support staff, and the families of current and former patients. Followed by intense on-site workshops the final master plan identified four areas of improvements: facilities, site access, infrastructure, and brand recognition in the community. Planned initiatives range from improved staff workflow with larger patient rooms, enhanced family amenities, additional staff respite areas, vehicular entry upgrades, community walking trails, and rebranding their more patient focused strategy with the community.

LEVINE CANCER INSTITUTE EXPANSION Charlotte, NC 260,000 sf The Levine Cancer Institute, the first multi-site cancer center in the world to be certified by the Planetree Organization, has a mission of providing a comforting experience for patients, families, and caregivers as they journey toward healing. Patient experience workshops, facilitated in collaboration with the Patient/Family Advisory Council, informed the design’s guiding principles of celebrating interaction, supporting the journey, providing holistic care, and honoring mind/body/spirit. These principles are embodied in the numerous experience elements found throughout, namely the interfaith chapel, centralized lab/registration area, improved dining facilities, infusion bays with vegetative roof views, and extensive natural light.

In creating Charlotte’s first MIBG therapy suite, the client sought to develop a care environment that promotes a more holistic approach to healing and well-being. Little was able to alleviate the prolonged isolation MIGB patients experience due to the radioactive nature of treatment by converting two existing rooms into a unique therapy suite design; one that features a treatment room for the patient and a protected adjoining room for parents, caregivers and staff, with a lead-lined window between. The environment of the patient room is further enhanced through a specialized, fiber optic light system that mirrors a starry night with planets and shooting stars.

LE VINE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL: SANDRA AND LEON’S PLACE Charlotte, NC 5,000 sf This Pediatric BMT and Cellular Therapies Unit was a 5,000 sf renovation. The goal of the project was to create a new eight-bed hematologic oncology suite to serve pediatric and young adult patients. It is the only one of its kind in the region and one of three in the entire state. The suite includes the development of a new playroom that gives patients a space to escape while still being in the required positive pressure environment. The playroom is a critical factor in holistic healing, providing young patients a sense normalcy and control.

The pedestrian bridges linking to Level 03 to the north and the east sides of campus lead to the decision to locate the Pediatric Conference Center and the Cancer and Blood Disorder Clinic here. Similarly to Level 5 and 4 , Level 3 incorporates the “city” theme into it’s graphics throughout to aid in wayfinding and playful dsitractions. The Cancer and Blood Disorder Clinic, consists of a welcoming lobby, 18 exam rooms in 2 clinical neighborhoods, 2 infusion areas with 8 and 17 private infusion rooms, lab, pharmacy, multipurpose room, and art / activity room and administrative areas. The Conference Center, which will host both staff meetings and larger multidisciplinary evens, includes a large conference room for eighty that can be divided into three smaller rooms, a small 15 seat conference room, and a pre-function area with a catering kitchen.

A primary design goal was to improve both the patient experience and the staff workflow. The clinic expands from the existing 10 exam rooms to 25 exam rooms housed in three neighborhood clinic modules. To help accomplish this impactful project, former Pro Bowl Tight End for the Carolina Panthers, Greg Olson and his family generously donated $2.5 million through his charity Receptions for Research: The Greg Olson Foundation.

Level 4’s use of organic curving walls complements the theme of mountains, forest, and lakes creating a calming atmosphere for patients, families, and staff. Three clinical neighborhoods consisting of 33 exam rooms and 2 therapy gyms support Surgery, Urology, Plastics, OB-GYN, Neurology, Epilepsy and NICU Follow Up. The main corridors on Level 4 are placed along the window walls to elevate patient and family experience through the use of natural light.

W I L M I N G T O N H E A LT H: A MBUL AT ORY SURGERY CEN T ER Wilmington, NC 19,500 sf The Wilmington Health Ambulatory Surgery Center is a 19,500 SF multi-specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center for a private physician practice. The project is located on a greenfield site, just a few miles from the region’s major medical center located in downtown Wilmington, NC. The project will be developed in two phases with phase one being four operating rooms and sixteen prep post stations with separate drop-off and discharge canopies. Phase two will consist of a 5,000 SF, two operating room expansion with associated support space. The building design has been developed to align with major design elements of the existing Wilmington Health medical facilities. The project is being done with a developer-led team on a fast-track schedule with early document submissions for foundation and structural steel to accelerate the schedule. 24

AT R I U M H E A LT H: M U S C U L O S K E L E TA L I N S T I T U T E Charlotte, NC 160,000 sf With the goal to create a destination for expanded Musculoskeletal Medicine procedures and education, Atrium Health established a Musculoskeletal Institute on their Mercy Hospital Campus in Charlotte, NC. This is a net new program for the fastest growing healthcare system in the region. They have gotten some of the top surgeons and researchers to join under one umbrella and advance Musculoskeletal care for Charlotte and beyond. They also plan to use the Institute to teach and recruit new residents/surgeons. To accommodate the growing needs of the program, Little’s Healthcare team came on board to design extensive renovations and expansions to the 117-year-old hospital. These enhancements include adding four new, state-of-the-art modular operating rooms and modernizing two existing operating rooms into procedure rooms. Additionally, to properly support the added operating rooms with optimum efficiency, the Sterile Processing Department required a full renovation plus an expansion to existing space.

H A R R O D H E A LT H: G A S T R O M D A M B U L AT O RY S U R G E RY C E N T E R & MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING Orange City, FL In addition to the Lake Mary Ambulatory Surgery Center and GI Clinic, Gastro MD reached out to us to design a second Ambulatory Surgery which would also house their regional business offices. The wood and glass natural design elements continued on to this project. Creating a modern yet holistic atmosphere. Unlike the Lake Mary ASC, Orange City has two canopies, one for receiving and one for discharge creating a seamless flow for patients and visitors. The ASC is comprised of one operating room, three GI procedure rooms and 16 swing prep and recovery bays. The new business section of building allows Gastro MD to centralize all their business operations, allowing the nearby clinics to now focus on increasing patient volumes.

N O VA N T H E A LT H: LEL A ND A MBUL AT ORY SURGERY CEN T ER Leland, NC 15,000 sf This new, approximately 15,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center on an undeveloped site in Leland, NC. The facility houses two operating rooms and two procedure rooms, with a prep and recovery area positioned adjacent to the treatment rooms for efficient patient flow. On-site sterile processing and supporting spaces round out the program. The building exterior relies primarily on tilt-up concrete panels, a strategy that reduces construction costs and accelerates the schedule.

D U K E H E A LT H H Y B R I D O R Durham, NC The Duke Medicine Pavilion (DMP) 3rd Floor is the primary surgical platform for Duke’s North campus, housing operating rooms that support a wide range of surgical specialties. When the floor was designed, induction rooms placed between each pair of ORs were meant to speed patient throughput, but staffing constraints left that potential unrealized. This project puts the space back to work: two adjacent induction rooms are combined into a single, larger procedure room that serves as an overflow OR when demand peaks. The scope also grows to include reconfiguring and expanding an existing operating room into a state-of-the-art Hybrid OR, engineered to match the efficiency and workflow of DMP’s existing Hybrid while integrating the latest surgical technology. To protect ongoing care, construction advances in carefully phased stages that keep every adjacent operating room fully functional throughout. The result expands DMP’s surgical capacity, with no interruption to patient care.

SOU TH L AKE HOSPITAL Leesburg & Clermont, FL 81,348 sf across two campuses South Lake Hospital set out to bring trusted, quality care closer to a fast-growing region. Little answered with two freestanding facilities that put emergency and outpatient care right in the communities they serve. In Leesburg, the 41,348 sf Blue Cedar campus works like a mini hospital, combining an emergency department, an outpatient diagnostic platform, and an attached medical office building, all tied to the main campus by helicopter, ambulance, and supply chain. A light-filled connector doubles as a place of respite, inviting staff and visitors into the garden. In Clermont, the 40,000 sf Joe H. and Loretta Scott Medical Pavilion delivers a two-story freestanding ED with 12 treatment rooms, a specialized infant resuscitation room, on-site lab, imaging, rehabilitation, and a helipad. At its center, a 21-foot oval clerestory skylight draws daylight into the heart of the emergency room, a WELL biophilic feature that calms patients the moment they arrive. N O VA N T H E A LT H S U M M E R S C O R N E R F S E D & M O B Summerville, SC 30,000 sf MOB / 11,000 sf FSED Set in a fast-growing community just north of Charleston, this new Novant Health facility pairs a Freestanding Emergency Department with a two-story Medical Office Building on a site built to grow. Developed by SensusOne with Novant Health as the FSED provider, the design threads connectivity throughout, with direct links to an adjacent Publix, room for future development, and circulation planned around ambulance access, walk-ins, patients, staff, and deliveries. Drawing on traditional Lowcountry aesthetics, the FSED offers nine exam rooms, an isolation room, a trauma room, and imaging including X-ray and CT, while clerestory windows above the team station pull in natural light to create a calming environment for patients and staff.

Responding to the client’s requirements of promoting a strong sense of community and patient interaction through a rich sequence of shared and social spaces that provide a connection to the community. Places of collaboration, comfort, and contemplative solitude are created through thoughtful spaces and control of light. With this unique focus on wellness, as opposed to a traditional medical planning with a clinical tenant, the paradigm of sterile and often uninviting medical clinics shifts by introducing experiential and programmatic elements throughout the patient’s journey. This promotes better interactions with caregivers, transforming an otherwise often anxious moment, into a calmer, more beneficial one.
