A commercial complex in Newton is now home to SEVA Thrift Store, which has moved from Scott Road to #108-12877 76 Ave. The store, known for new and gently used South Asian clothing, raises money for the initiatives of Seva Foundation, which has donated more than $100,000 to Surrey Hospitals Foundation, housing projects for Options Community Services and scholarships for local students, among others.

A grand reopening event June 14 was attended by Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, Senator Baltej Singh Dhillon, Coun.

Linda Annis and school trustee Gary Thind, among others.

“We are deeply grateful for the support of all who took time to come out and celebrate with us.

Our community is our motivation,” said Kiran Malli, board president of SEVA Foundation.

The thrift store opened in 2016 with a mission to sell donated clothing to raise funds for initiatives supported by SEVA, a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service.”

Now, at the new store in Newton, the focus is on South Asian fashion and decor only, in a smaller space — advertised as a “unique destination for culturally rich and affordable finds,” a news release says.

“The new location begins a new chapter for Seva Founda-

tion as they begin to expand services by providing support to those in need through programming and community initiatives, including initiatives directly related to the store that promote sustainability and South Asian culture.”

In addition to financial donations, the foundation has supported community initiatives including aid for shelters, food

banks and refugees, employment and skill-building programs in collaboration with local schools and agencies, book donations and literacy drives, and formal clothing for graduates facing adversity.

The store is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Donations are accepted from Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Small business raises over $300K for education charity Newton-based Raven Hydronic Supply supports Room to Read Anna Burns

A small mechanical supply company in Newton has raised more than $300,000 for Room to Read, a global organization dedicated to creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. This year, the company aims to raise $75,000 for one of Room to Read’s programs in Vietnam.

“Through Room to Read’s programming, students all over the world gain skills that enable them to pursue lifelong learning, make informed decisions, and become change makers in their communities,” reads Room to Read’s website.

Raven Hydronic Supply has partnered with the non-profit for 11 years, and its donations have helped fund projects in seven

This year’s campaign goal is $75,000, which would fund scholarships for 150 girls in Vietnam.

These scholarships would cover the costs of tuition, mentorship, life

skills and equip the girls with the tools they need to graduate from secondary school. The company is matching every donation dollar for dollar.

“Girls who complete secondary school go on to earn higher incomes, raise healthier families, and are more likely to educate the next generation,” explains Ashton.

“The long-term impact of even one scholarship is tremendous.”

As of July 4, the campaign had raised $13,200.

“With a staff of under 15, Raven Supply is a powerful example of how social impact doesn’t require size, it requires intention. They prove that businesses of all scales can act as catalysts for equity, inclusion, and education,” noted a press release from Raven Supply.

New childcare centre officially opens

Hotel, conference centre and warehouses coming for Sullivan Tom Zytaruk

A hotel, conference centre and warehouses will be built at the northeast corner of 64 Avenue and 152 Street.

Council passed third reading on a related bylaw in April without debate, following a public hearing.

The subject site is 25 acres, with 18 to be developed and seven to be donated to the city as part of the biodiversity corridor, and creek preservation.

The project features 11,692 square metres of warehouse space, 2,405 square metres of retail space, 8,121 square metre of self storage, 8,121 square metres of general office uses, 763 square metres for an “eating establishment,” a 1,608 square metre conference centre, 12,077 square metre hotel, and a 929 square metre daycare centre. It’s at 6456 and 6480 152 Street.

Speaker Richard Sullivan, of the pioneering Irish family, opposed the application, telling council that the “semi-wet lowland” downhill is natural bottom land for barn owls, hawks, herons, barn swallows, pheasants and songbirds, “and an occasional deer and infrequent Red Fox. This wildlife adjoins my farm and four other acreages to its immediate north.

“I’ve often thought that the above farmland should be acquired by the city for public use because of its two mountain panoramas and park-like setting and particularly since it’s

Surrey’s geographic centre,” Sullivan said.

“In summary, it doesn’t fly with me that this pastoral site, abutting today’s blueberry farm with two coho salmon waterways and a meadow-land for birds and raptors, plus its magnificent view of both the Golden Ears and Mount Baker, should have a proposed development under asphalt and concrete.”

Deb Jack, president of Surrey Environmental Partners, reminded council “we have policy opposed to building on floodplain and this is floodplain.”

Jack said there’s been “no real mention” of Hyland Creek, which runs on the south side of the property parallel to 64 Avenue, “and its incredible importance. It is an extraordinary area of high biodiversity value.”

“This is all going to impact that.”

Mike Kompter, Hub Engineering Inc. one of the consultants on the project, noted the property was in the Agricultural Land Reserve but has been excluded.

“As part of the exclusion it was required that twice as much land be put back into the ALR, so in fact this project has actually increased the size of the ALR in the city of Surrey. So it wasn’t just taken out, it required additional – twice as much – farm-able land to be put into the ALR,” Kompter told council.

“There is no residential proposed here, so there will be no negative impact on any school system. In fact this project will be providing

a daycare centre.”

A City of Surrey planning document indicates that while the project doesn’t comply with the agricultural designation in both the Official Community Plan and in the Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy, “given the location of the site and with historical technical reviews on the site deeming the site unsuitable for agriculture, staff are in support of the proposed amendments.”

The property was excluded from the ALR in 2013.

The City of Surrey has officially opened the new Strawberry Hill Hall child-care facility.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, May 2 to mark the opening of the licensed facility, which opened its doors on April 1 and is currently enrolling children aged three to five years to fill 25 available spaces.

“The new Strawberry Hill Hall child-care centre is a welcome addition to Surrey’s growing child-care system,” said Rohini Arora, the B.C. NDP’s parliamentary secretary for child care. “With strong support across community tables, working families and single parents in Surrey will have more access to high-quality and inclusive care that meets local needs. This is how we build a stronger future for children and families throughout the province.”

In 2020, the City received a grant of $425,172 from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund and selected Alex House as the facility operator in 2024 after a selection progress.

The fund is jointly supported by provincial investments and federal funding under the 2021-2022 to 2030-2031 Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Agreement.

“I’m delighted to see much-needed child care spaces being added to the Strawberry Hill neighbourhood,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Thank you to the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund for funding the project and allowing us to use this historic city facility to support local families and help them thrive.”

Strawberry Hill Hall was first built in 1909 and is listed on the City of Surrey Heritage Register. After a fire destroyed Strawberry Hill Hall in 2021, the City constructed a replica of the original building, which was completed in 2024 with a capital budget of $2.5M. This construction project also included the addition of a new play area in the adjacent R.A. Nicholson Park.

NEWTON COMMUNITY NEWS KPU receives funding to support international nurses Tuition-free course helps eligible nurses practise in Canada Anna Burns

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has received provincial funding for another school year to support a tuition-free course for eligible internationally educated nurses.

The $180,421 from the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education allows KPU to offer three sections of the course, Introduction to Professional Communication for Internationally Educated Nurses (IPCIEN). The tuition-free course is underway now, running to Aug. 5 at KPU’s Newton campus (12666 72 Ave.).

The course is a great option for students who want to grow their career, stated Aimee Begalka, dean of KPU’s Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation, in a release May 12.

Funding will allow KPU to offer three sections of the course, Introduction to Professional Communication for Internationally Educated Nurses (IPCIEN). (KPU/Contributed to Surrey Now-Leader) “The course is very practical and hands-on, with opportunities to work with standardized patients and receive coaching from both a language instructor and a nursing instructor,” Begalka says. “Past students have felt overwhelmingly positive about the class and the ways in which it helped them move to the next step in their career.”

KPU stated online that eligible stu-

dents must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents (five years or less), or convention refugees living in B.C., and have an occupational certification as a registered nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) from their source country. They must also meet the IELTS 6 or CLBPT 6.5, Duolingo 95 or equivalent language requirement,

and commit to the 13-week program.

The funding is part of a nearly $4-million investment from the B.C. government’s Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning Pathways program between April 1, 2025, and Aug. 31, 2026. Eleven public post-secondary institutions received funding this year. The program is intended to help students obtain the

prerequisites to access specific programs, including health care, early childhood education, skilled trades, and technology.

Since 2017, the Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learning (ELL) programs have been offered tuition-free to domestic students in B.C. This year marks the fourth time the province has provided one-time funding for the programs.

This is the third year KPU has received funding for this. Last year, it received $183,911 from the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education for the 2024/2025 school year.

Each post-secondary tailors the funds to the region and is customized to the needs either Indigenous students, students who are new to Canada or students in rural areas.

“Our government recognizes the importance of helping people upgrade their language skills and advance in careers in high-priority sectors,” Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills Anne Kang said. “Investing in this program at KPU is one of the important ways we are making it easier for internationally trained nurses to practice in B.C., so that people can access the care they need.”

1. TASTE THE ‘SPICE TRAIL’ Many Newton-area restaurants, cafés and retail stores are mapped on a “Surrey Spice Trail,” launched

2. BE COOL IN A POOL Surrey’s eight outdoor pools are open for the summer, with staggered opening dates. 3. MAKE A RACKET Surrey boasts dozens of public outdoor tennis and pickleball courts at parks across the city, and Surrey Tennis Centre is where a lot of the action is. Check out the big “bubble” that includes six indoor courts for games and lessons, adjacent to six outdoor red clay courts, on 144 Street, near the old Surrey city hall.

4. CATCH A FLICK Surrey is home to a couple of ultra-comfortable places to see a movie including Strawberry Hill Cineplex in Newton. In summer the place is busy with crowds seeing the latest blockbusters and also those wanting to the beat the heat of warmer weather. 5. TOSS AN AXE Newton’s Bad Axe Throwing is the Surrey franchise of what’s billed as “the world’s biggest urban axe throwing club,” a place for walkins, leagues, private parties and team-building events, at 8132 130 St. Axe-throwing teachers are available on the facility’s three lanes.

6. RIDE THE RAILS The miniature railway at Bear Creek Park offers train rides through the forest (bctrains.com, call 604501-1232). Train rides are $7, the same price for mini golf in among the park’s many trees. The facility

7. SEE ART Admission is free at Surrey Art Gallery, a great place to stay cool in an air-conditioned environment surrounded by art. Exhibits this summer include the juried show “Arts 2025” and also “10 and 10: Story of Stories,” celebrating the gallery’s 50th anniversary at Bear Creek Park (Surrey.ca/artgallery). While inside, check out “Mandala After a Prayer Wheel,” hands-on art that people can spin. Maurice Van Der Beke’s circular sculpture, made of pounded sheet copper nearly two metres across and installed in 1974, is the oldest artwork in the City of Surrey’s Public Art Collection.

8. GO BMX-ING In Newton, Action BMX is the place to be for bike-riding on a track that’s more than 40 years old, with updates and renovations over the years. “We are a membership-based, grassroots BMX club with a cradleto-grave philosophy providing coaching, practice and competition,” says a post on actionbmx.ca, which includes a race and practice calendar, and more. It’s located at 12600 76 Ave. 9. TAKE A WALK

Credit union reopens flagship Surrey branch with 28-foot mural Tom Zillich

A flagship branch of Community Savings credit union has reopened in Surrey following extensive renovations.

In Newton, improvements unveiled earlier this spring at #900-7380 King George Boulevard include upgraded accessibility features, new spaces for expanded financial services and a mural by a local artist showcasing “community spirit,” according to a news release from Yulu Impact Communications.

Jag Nagra’s 28-foot mural, located behind teller desks, “highlights the diverse range of people and their contributions to Surrey and Newton including students, elders, small business owners and labourers,” the artist says.

“This kind of multi-generational representation is so important—it ensures that members feel seen, valued and represented.”

PICS urges Canadians to support local through #LoyalCanadian movement project Newton-based group urges people to buy local in the face of U.S. tariffs Tracy Holmes

Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society has been spreading Canadian pride in 2025 with a new movement.

The #LoyalCanadian movement is aimed at educating and encouraging people to buy locally made products.

PICS president and CEO Satbir Cheema said the Newton-based society has pledged to buy local “as much as possible,” including at its transition homes, senior

housing, PICS head office and other locations. The movement was officially launched in February.

“Canada is not for sale and we are not (the) 51st state,” board chair Maninder Grewal said in a press release.

PICS marketing, communications and fundraising officer Phalak Betab said the #LoyalCanadian movement “is to raise awareness about the brands we use daily and inspire people to buy Canadian-made products.”

“We plan to host fun challenges and create educational content to promote Canadian brands worldwide.”

Betab added PICS is inviting everyone to join the movement by using #LoyalCanadian when purchasing Canadian brands.

Newton students earn honours Students from Newton-area schools have shown some star power this spring and summer.

Numerous students from local schools have earned distinction in a variety of endeavours. Here are a few: BEEDIE LUMINARIES Students from Newton-area secondary schools are among 43 from Surrey who will be receiving up to $44,000 each for their post-secondary careers.

Awarded to students who have shown resilience in facing financial struggles and work to positively change their lives, the students have been chosen for the Beedie Luminaries scholarship program.

Each recipient will receive $11,000 each year for either two-year or four-year programs they choose to enrol in.

The winners can choose to use their scholarships at one of 26 post-secondaries in B.C., with opportunities also available for a peer program, a student success program, mentorship opportunities and chances for paid summer internships.

Winners include Mehar Atwal from L.A. Matheson Secondary; Keiara Connell and Alyshaan Muhammad from École Panorama Ridge Secondary; and Zahra Alsh, Talib Chohan, Ahlam Hamary and Mohamad Obeid from Queen Elizabeth Secondary.

Princess Margaret is seeing a whopping 13 students as recipients, consisting of Mursib Abbasi, Ammar Ahmed,

Maira Asghar, Haardik Garg, Mais Ghazal, Christian Mariano, Hashir Mehmood, Ali Naqib, Estephania Rubalcaba Castillo, Fatima Saeed, Mobin Sanjarani, Gursahay Singh and Sara Tarar.

SHAD WINNER Hiya Sharma from Queen Elizabeth Secondary School is among those selected from a prestigious summer program from Shad Canada.

Sharma is one of more than 30 teens from Surrey who will be spending their summers at university campuses across the country to be immersed in a STEAM and entrepreneurship program.

Local teens from Grades 10 and 11 have been selected among 1,700 across Canada for the program.

The program allows the high school students to live on campus, attend seminars, labs and workshops, and learn from experts and instructors to engage in STEAM – or science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Students were chosen based on their academic performance, well-roundedness, creativity, innovation and extra-curricular involvement, according to a release from Surrey Schools.

CONCOURS D’ART ORATOIRE B.C.’s annual provincial French-speaking competition saw École Panorama Ridge Secondary’s Shareena Kaushal take a silver medal in Core French 9/10. Shareena

was one of eight medallists from the Surrey school district in the competition for grades 6 through 12 students.

SKILLS CANADA BC This annual provincial contest challenges secondary students on their skills in a variety of trades. Edleen Madhwan of Princess Margaret Secondary captured silver in Car Painting, one of 11 medallists from the Surrey school district.

SCHULICH LEADERS Multiple local high school students were among those to make the short list for the Schulich Leader Scholarships for 2025. The scholarships are awarded to students who show a passion for STEM, and they’re worth $100,000 (math and science) and $120,000 (engineering). The shortlisted nominees from local schools include Alyshaan Muhammad, École Panorama Ridge Secondary; Amishka Pashan, Sullivan Heights Secondary; Mohamad Obeid, Queen Elizabeth Secondary; Nushawn Birdi, L.A. Matheson Secondary; Tegvir Toor, Tamanawis Secondary; Yahia Chelli, Princess Margaret Secondary – among a list of 20 from the Surrey school district shortlisted among 1,500 from across Canada.

The City of Surrey has a series of family-friendly summer events in the works as part of its Focus Newton Action Plan aimed at “rejuvenating, beautifying and enhancing” Newton.

Included in this are free movie nights, concerts, community picnics, and pop-up games.

Mayor Brenda Locke is quoted in a City-issued press release that she’s “proud to be launching these free community events, which highlight our commitment to bringing residents together and fostering pride in Newton.

Pop-up games and activities are part of the City of Surrey’s Focus Newton events this summer. (City of Surrey/surrey.ca) She added the activities build on “significant investments” council has made toward Newton being “a thriving, vibrant area.

“Whether it’s the $7.5 million 148 Street road improvement project recently completed, or the $310.6 million Newton Community Centre in development, our focus remains on positive change and

community-driven growth,” Locke said.
