Emily Carr University, Vancouver, Canada Lighting Design: WSP Lighting Studio A British Columbia IES chapter Vision Award winner, the project replaced two previous buildings with a new 290,000-sq.-ft., purpose-built institution. The lighting design was able to incorporate LED within budget, including a digital lighting control system. The challenge was to provide quality comfort lighting integrated with the university’s desire to maintain usual “industrial” settings for art schools. The design resulted in LPD of 0.68 w/sq. ft., 40% below ASHRAE/IES 2010 baseline. Occupancy sensors were used and daylight harvesting controls were utilized in atrias and other spaces. Each studio is comprised of suspended indirect luminaires with DALI drivers, allowing for each studio to be configured to suit teaching and AV setup.

Architect: Gensler Lighting Designer: Atelier Ten A wellness real estate and technology company dedicated to transforming residential and commercial spaces to improve wellbeing and performance, the criteria for Delos’ new offices were informed by seven years of research.

“We wanted to exemplify to our clients and industry partners that we’re supporting the health and wellbeing of our own employees,” says Janna Wandzilak, director, Delos Solutions, WELL Faculty, LEED AP. To do so, Delos decided to pursue WELL Platinum, LEED Platinum, and the Living Building Challenge certifications. Pursuing three separate building standards called for a high degree of collaboration between the designers, project managers and manufacturers. Caitlin Toczko, senior lighting designer at Atelier Ten, led the team in tackling the various challenges of balancing the lighting features of WELL version 1 with the energy requirements of LEED version 4. To meet the requirements for balancing LPD reduction for LEED, with melanopic lux (EML) optimization for WELL, she specified Ketra tunable light sources, whose meticulous placement and calibration capabilities were critical in meeting the tough goals. Beyond the uniformity of color across Ketra’s individual diodes, Toczko said the control system and individual addressability of each lamp fulfills a WELL feature requiring small control zones; additionally, the ability to tune spectral power distribution (SPD) and CCT meant they could meet WELL’s EML requirement without increasing power usage that could jeopardize LEED requirements. Finally, post-installation adjustments for specific CCTs within distinct zones and rooms easily could be addressed from Ketra’s mobile app.

“We chose a space that would allow us to have a lot of natural daylight. It’s amazing to have a dynamic lighting system to match.

Gasholder Triplets, Kings Cross London Architect: Wilkinson Eyre Architects Lighting Design: Speirs + Major The Gasholder Triplets are a recently completed development of 145 apartments set within a triplet of listed gasholder guide frames in Kings Cross London, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. At a macro scale, the lighting is designed to enhance the experience of looking up and through the atria. Set into a concealed cove, the light source is entirely hidden from view, both when looking up or across the circular balconies.

The light itself is programmed to respond to the changing quality of natural light over the day.

Exterior Lighting The lit image of the Triplets is meticulously composed to reveal the beauty of the heritage framework, while avoiding light spill onto the residential buildings within. Highlighting the detail in the structures, warm light is grazed up the front face of each of the light gray Gasholder columns. Physically unobtrusive custom-designed floodlights control the light so that the interior building is only animated by light coming from inside the apartments. The central space that connects the three buildings is deliberately the brightest element in the tableau, appearing as the source of light itself. From further back, the warm positively lit frames sit in dramatic counterpoint to the adjacent Gasholder Park, the silhouette of its dark frame having been revealed internally in cool white.

Each Gasholder features a roof garden where residents can enjoy views of the London skyline, while remaining safely ensconced within the silhouette of the circular gasholder frame. Here, custom lanterns placed on the floor and at tables support the sense of a snug hideaway in the city. The placement of the lanterns encourages residents to get close up to the warm light, while the low levels overall make it possible to enjoy the vista beyond.

Made from fluted glass and copper mesh with a very warm indirect light source, the quality of the light they emit is reminiscent of gas heaters.

This evokes a cozy atmosphere that encourages residents to dwell nearby, while also referencing the gas that was once contained in the frame.
