ON THE COVER
SEA CHANGE: The Gulf of Maine, A NOVA Special Presentation reveals how the lessons learned from this body of water may have global implications
Your Summer with GBH
Maybe you’re planning a road trip this summer. Or perhaps relaxing on the beach is more your style. But whether you find yourself in a tent, a hammock, a boat, or a plane, there are many ways to enjoy GBH’s programs and films this summer. So put on your earbuds and let’s dive in.
In late July, you can use the free PBS app to stream our new three-part series about New England’s most spectacular region: the Gulf of Maine, the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean that extends from Nova Scotia to Cape Cod.
This is a local story with international resonance, as the Gulf is at the epicenter of global climate change. SEA CHANGE: The Gulf of Maine, A NOVA Special Presentation (see page 13) covers three important themes: the biodiversity of the Gulf (home to 3,000 species); the peril facing all living creatures because of the warming of the waters; and, most important, what we can do about it—how people, scientists, and entrepreneurs are using remarkable innovations and discoveries to adapt to these changes.
What I like most about this series are the stories of the people featured in the film: the scallopers, the clammers, the lobster fishers, the kelp farmers, and the Indigenous descendants of the Tribes and First Nations of the Wabanaki Confederacy, who are very much part of the Gulf’s future. Climate change is a hard story to get people to care about if you don’t explain the impact on what they care about most—other people and charismatic animals.
I also have a personal connection to this film that I didn’t realize when I arrived at GBH in late 2022. My friend, the award-winning photojournalist Brian Skerry, serves as one of its producers. The idea for the film came from a story about the Gulf of Maine that Brian and
I worked on together for National Geographic a number of years ago. The throughline between the projects is Brian’s work—spectacular under water photography that clearly (and beautifully) shows what is happening in the Gulf and why it matters. You can watch this film on television on GBH 2 on July 24 and 31 at 10pm or stream it on GBH Passport and on the free PBS app (see page 12). And there are more ways you can take GBH along with you.
• For road trips, listen to GBH News’ fascinating “The Big Dig” podcast wherever you get your podcasts (gbhnews.org/podcasts, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music)—about America’s most famous infrastructure project—or take in the sounds of Tanglewood every Sunday night by streaming classical.org
• From anywhere in the world with an internet connection, binge the latest MASTERPIECE mysteries on the PBS app or Passport or dive into WORLD documentaries on YouTube or worldchannel.org
• For those barbecues and picnics, make some of Lidia Bastianich’s award-winning recipes by streaming episodes of Lidia’s Kitchen on gbh.org/tv-shows
• And if you are staying local, join us at our booth at the Open Streets events in Jamaica Plain (July 21) and Hyde Park (August 11). Or stop by our GBH Boston Public Library Studio, where you can catch live radio broadcasts of Boston Public Radio from 11am to 2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or The Culture Show on Fridays from 2pm–3pm. Have a wonderful summer!

“Lethal Dissent”: A New Podcast from The World
F or Iranian dissidents, the consequences of speaking out can be deadly. “Lethal Dissent,” a new nine-part podcast from The World, GBH and PRX’s global news radio program, investigates the price and peril that Iranian dissidents face for speaking against their govern ment and follows the secret operatives who seek to silence them. It begins when two friends flee Iran to escape the regime’s crackdown on dissent. But when they arrive in Turkey, one of them dies under unusual circum stances. Fariba Nawa, a reporter in Istanbul, works to unravel the mystery of what happened, entering Turkey’s underworld of kidnappers-for-hire and shady government officials and taking listeners inside an Iranian operation to snatch exiles who stand up to the regime. The stakes? The right to say what you believe, and potentially, your life.
“The World has a decades-long legacy of nuanced reporting on global stories with on-the-ground journalists,” said The World Editor-in-Chief Dan Lothian. “We’re proud to continue our commitment to international storytelling with this edge-of-your-seat podcast reported by the talented Fariba Nawa and with support from the Pulitzer Center and Zamaneh Media, and in collaboration with Istanbul’s “On Spec” podcast.”
“Lethal Dissent” is now available on all major podcast platforms.

Turbine Testing Continues in Canal
Anew license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will make the Bourne Tidal Test Site at the Cape Cod Canal the only tidal test site in the country that allows marine turbines to generate renewable electricity that can be sent to the power grid.
With this eight-year pilot license, the nonprofit Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative will own and maintain the facility and private developers will bring their turbines for testing in real ocean water.
Testing in ocean waters allows for turbines that are larger in diameter than those tested on land but with little risk to marine life.
“The blades on these things, because they are in water, move relatively slowly compared to wind turbines…
Despite millions of dollars of testing worldwide, there has been no impact on fish or marine mammals,” the Collaborative’s Executive Director John Miller told CAI’s John Basile.
“We could generate about the equivalent of a nuclear power plant in Massachusetts waters. Wave energy is also something we are helping people test…And worldwide these have tremendous potential because wave and tidal energy tend to be more consistent and predictable.”
The Collaborative is seeking state funding to connect the test site to the power grid.

MASTERPIECE/Wolf Hall
This award–winning historical drama, adapted from Hilary Mantel’s bestselling novel, has been a favorite since it first aired in 2016, and it is coming to Passport. Power broker Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) deals with deadly political intrigue, the tempestuous relationship of King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis) and Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy), and the upheavals of the Protestant reformation.
Hijos del Desierto (Sons of the Desert)
Pedro and Gaspar’s parents are massacred by the Chilean government in 1907 during a protest about working conditions in the salt mines. One of the brothers is kidnapped, and when they meet again 30 years later as enemies on oppo site sides of the law, they do not know they are family.
PBS NewsHour/ Democratic National Convention
PBS NewsHour travels to Chicago for four nights of primetime coverage of the Democratic National Convention as the party formally renominates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for President and Vice President of the United States in advance of the November election.
A Boston (R)Evolution

What’s Cooking on GBH? Aragosta Lobster
Pasta | 4 to 6 servings
Creamy pasta; delicate lobster; and a bright gremolata of fresh parsley, garlic, and lemon zest shine in this lobster pasta dish from Aragosta at Goose Cove, the storied farm-to-coast-to-table restaurant and inn in Deer Isle, Maine. Yankee Senior Food Editor Amy Traverso and her team had just a moment to admire the sweeping view of East Penobscot Bay before chef-owner Devin Finigan stepped out of the kitchen, prepped and ready to cook. The lobster meat is a splurge, but it’s absolutely worth it. Watch it all come together on Weekends with Yankee on Sun (7/7) at 11:30am on GBH 2
TO PREPARE
STEP 1 In a small bowl, stir gremolata ingredients. Set aside.
STEP 2 In a large bowl, use a spatula to fold the lobster meat with the mascarpone, lemon juice and zest, garlic, and parsley. Add salt to taste and set aside.
STEP 3 Set a large pot of salted water over high heat and bring to a boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions until still just a bit firm in the center. Drain, reserving a cup of pasta water.
STEP 4 Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the wine and shallot and bring to a simmer. Simmer until the wine reduces to about 2 tablespoons. Add the butter, a few cubes at a time, to the wine mixture, whisking as you go. It should blend and look creamy. Add the cream and stir until the sauce can coat the back of a spoon.
STEP 5 Add the cooked pasta to the pan and stir to combine. Add a ladleful of pasta water to thin the sauce if desired. Salt to taste. Serve hot, topped with gremolata.
