WELCOME Dear Fellow members of the Habs Community, I am proud to share with you the 2024-26 Habs Impact Report. As we reflect on two remarkable years of philanthropy and engagement, we offer our sincere thanks to Bill Friar, who retired in January, for his outstanding service. We are delighted to welcome Rebecca van der Westhuizen as Director to lead the Foundation’s next chapter. Habs is a special community, galvanised by a shared commitment to academic and personal excellence and to philanthropy. Indeed, one of the most striking aspects of life at Habs is the extraordinary involvement of our parents and Old Haberdashers. Hardly a day passes without a parent or OH contributing their time, expertise or enthusiasm to enrich the student experience. This year marked the fifth Giving Day and, fittingly, it was our most successful yet. At a time when many families continue to navigate rising living costs, the generosity shown by our community was inspiring. This same spirit was evident at OH Day’s Careers Panel and our Creative Arts events, where alumni and parents supported current students, and through our
Partnerships Programme, where students and staff give back to the wider community. Together, these moments remind us that our greatest asset is, and always will be, our people. We engage in this work not for recognition, but because we believe in it. However, it was both humbling and gratifying to be named Independent School of the Year for Outstanding Educational Partnerships, and overall Independent School of the Year 2025 as a result. The judges’ choice to recognise in Habs ‘a voice that helps the wider world to understand the powerful and positive impact of this sector,’ and to commend Habs for demonstrating ‘resilience in staying true to our vision, rather than swerving the challenges of the moment’ says something about the work we are trying to do. None of this, and none of what follows, could be possible without your support and encouragement. Thank you again. We are extremely grateful.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF FOUNDATION I am delighted to be introducing myself to the Habs community at such an exciting point in the Foundation’s development. The generosity reflected in this report is inspiring, and I am grateful to everyone whose support has made such a significant impact over the last two academic years. As we look ahead, our focus is on building for the future of Habs. We want to nurture a strong and connected community in which parents and Old Haberdashers remain meaningfully involved throughout their lives, sharing their knowledge, networks and generosity for the benefit of today’s students and those who follow them. There is now a wonderful opportunity to build on this philanthropic spirit and turn today’s generosity into an enduring legacy. By bringing our community

In 2024–25, 146 students received bursary support, while 119 were supported in 2025–26. Donations totalled £358,336 in 2024–25 and £952,931 in 2025–26. Behind every figure is an opportunity made possible: a student welcomed into Habs, a family supported through difficult circumstances and a young person given the freedom to imagine a future that might otherwise have felt beyond their reach.

Giving Day 2025 raised £192,818 through the generosity of 380 donors. In 2026, 419 donors gave £300,466 - an increase of 56% - supported by matched funding from a generous Old Haberdasher. Giving Day brings the Habs community to life, with Prep and Junior School families running the MiniDash and more than 1,500 students taking part in the lunch time GivingDash. This year, the celebrations went even further with a Habs Girls v Habs Boys lacrosse match and Staff v Parent football match, all helping to raise vital funds for Bursaries, campus improvements and the newly established Class of 2026 Endowment Fund.
My child is bursary funded, Habs is truly giving them the best opportunity in life and the potential to change the future for the better. Without this it wouldn't be possible and I am truly grateful to each person that supports this amazing school, from the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you. My regret is I can't give more to a school that has done so much for our family.

WHAT A HABS EDUCATION MEANS JILLY GARTSIDE (OH 1975) I grew up with parents who had both left school at 14 – my mother then gained a qualification in shorthand and typing and became a secretary; she brought me up from the age of two on her own. She was good at all that was required to run a home practically and I inherited my love of cinema and drama from her, but she did not have much interest in literature, history, geography or science. To be able to attend a school like Habs from the age of 11 and study such subjects was beyond the dreams of my family – but it was achieved through the award of a full bursary after I had sat the entrance examination.
My primary school teachers gave me extra lessons after school, free of charge, to help me attain the necessary standard. I discovered a love of languages and a passion for literature while at Habs. I gained A Levels in English, French and German, winning the Governors’ Prize for English and German, as well as an O Level in Russian. I went on to study English and Drama at University of Bristol and then to become an actor. My talent for acting was nurtured by the wonderful and legendary Mrs Judd, who also encouraged my good friends Nica Burns (now CEO of Nimax Theatres) and Charlotte
KISHAN GANATRA (OH 2015) My parents both worked a range of low-income jobs to make ends meet, but they always wanted my brother and me to have a good education and the opportunities that could come with it. They were determined that we should do well and my father would come home from work each evening and sit down with us to prepare for the 11+. When my older brother, and then I, were accepted into Habs, there was a huge sense of relief and excitement. It was a significant achievement for our family, but we also knew that getting in was only the first hurdle. Even with partial bursaries, my parents couldn’t afford two sets of fees. Knowing that education and opportunity was our route to a better quality of life, wider family members agreed to help with the cost of our education so that we could attend. Growing up, we didn’t have many of the things that I came to realise were fairly normal for a lot of pupils at Habs. We didn’t have a large house or a flashy car, and family holidays were unheard of. School lunches, the tuck shop, school trips and even asking to attend
birthday parties would involve a level of expense that I knew would be discouraged. I never really talked about being on a bursary whilst at Habs. At the time, I felt that it was something to be embarrassed about, and I was very aware of the sacrifice my parents were making for me. That brought its own pressure. I felt that I had to make the most of the opportunity they were working so hard to give me. Looking back, though, I am incredibly grateful that they did and now openly discuss those financial limitations with friends and colleagues. I genuinely loved my time at Habs. It was academically demanding and there were certainly times when I found the pressure difficult, but it was also exhilarating. More than anything, Habs gave me a sense of what might be possible. I was surrounded by people who were ambitious and encouraged to make the most of their abilities. I made close friends there, many of whom I am still in regular contact with today and some of whom, as it turns out, were also on bursaries.

We participated in amazing productions such as ‘The Crucible’ and ‘Antigone’. Without her, I would not be where I am today. Much of my work now is narrating audiobooks – my stage name is Jilly Bond – and the languages I acquired at Habs have enabled me to do that work on more occasions than I can count, as well as gaining me parts in BBC Radio 4 plays. I am still in touch with both Nica and Charlotte, as well as my closest friend from the age of 13 – that’s a friendship forged at Habs which has lasted nearly 60 years!
My brother and I both went on to study at Russell Group universities. As a result of the possibilities and education received at Habs, I became an English
teacher, and my brother, a doctor, is advancing towards specialism. It's safe to say our parents are proud that their encouragement, determination and sacrifices have brought us this far. As I now do, I would strongly encourage anyone considering supporting the Habs Bursary Scheme to do so. I know first-hand what that support can mean. It isn’t simply about helping a family with school fees. It gives a child access to opportunities, experiences and a community that might otherwise be out of reach. I was very fortunate to have that opportunity. It changed what I thought was possible for me, and ultimately helped me build the life I have today.
More than anything, Habs gave me a sense of what might be possible.

FROM THE HEADMASTER OF HABS BOYS As Headmaster, I am continually humbled by the generosity, kindness and commitment of our Haberdashers' community. Every year, I am reminded that a great school is defined not only by what happens in its classrooms, but by the people who continue to invest their time, expertise and resources in the lives of others. Support comes in many forms, each one making a difference. This year, a parent donated our magnificent Christmas tree, bringing joy to students, staff and visitors throughout the festive season. This encouraged another parent to donate the mince pies and hot chocolate served at the official lighting ceremony for Prep School and Junior School students and parents. Another gave to strengthen a recent Prep sports tour, creating opportunities for pupils to develop their confidence, teamwork and love of sport. We are fortunate, too, to have members of our community who embody the full circle of belonging - former pupils who have returned as parents, and even as grandparents, enriching school life in countless ways while helping to shape the next generation's Habs experience. Some gifts reach across generations. We remain deeply grateful to the Old Haberdasher whose legacy continues to inspire students today by enabling them to experience France and discover the language and culture he loved so dearly. His vision lives on in every student whose horizons are broadened through these opportunities.

Alongside these acts of generosity are the gifts that transform lives most profoundly: the donations that make bursaries possible, ensuring that talented young people can benefit from a Haberdashers' education, regardless of their financial circumstances. These gifts strengthen not only individual students but the character and diversity of our entire school. To everyone who has supported Haberdashers - whether through philanthropy, volunteering, sharing expertise or simple acts of kindness - thank you. Your generosity enriches our school in ways both seen and unseen. Your support makes Habs a more vibrant, compassionate and inspiring place. Perhaps most importantly, your example teaches our students one of life's greatest lessons: that we all have a responsibility to give back. By witnessing your generosity, they learn that belonging to this community is not simply about what they receive, but about how they, in turn, can make a difference to the lives of others. That is a legacy which will endure for generations to come.

We were fortunate to be awarded the Otto Pask award and travelled to Paris. Studying abroad pushed us out of our comfort zone and allowed us to immerse ourselves in French culture and engage with people from across Europe.
Peter Wulff (OH 1946) attended Habs on a full scholarship and discovered a passion for French, inspired enormously by his teacher Otto Pask. This love of languages remained with him throughout his life and he left a legacy to encourage future generations of Haberdashers to study French in France.

FROM THE HEADMISTRESS OF HABS GIRLS Walking around our school, it is easy to see the opportunities our students enjoy, the spaces in which they learn and the people who make it all possible. What you cannot always see is the generosity that lies behind so much of it: the gifts, time, expertise and support that help shape our students’ experience every day. What continually inspires me is the many different ways our parents and Old Haberdashers choose to support our students and one another. Some gifts create new opportunities, such as the parent who sponsors our annual Economics Competition, culminating in a day at his investment bank, giving students valuable insight into the world of work. Others make a difference to everyday school life: generous support has helped strengthen our campus Wi-Fi, making communication easier for families, while the new Girls’ School outdoor Wellbeing Space provides students with a quiet place to pause, reflect and recharge. The St Catherine’s Parents' Guild exemplifies this same spirit of generosity, donating a proportion of the proceeds from their events to support bursaries. Their commitment helps ensure that a Habs education remains accessible to talented young people, regardless of financial circumstance. Time and expertise are another important way in which our community gives back. We are hugely grateful to the many Old Haberdashers who return each year to
share their experience through our Careers Breakfasts and Visiting Speaker Programme. One alumna, now a successful barrister, recently returned to the very hall where she had once listened to a visiting speaker as a pupil. Years later, she came back to share her own experience with the next generation, a lovely example of how Habs connections continue long after students leave, and how those who have benefited from the community can, in turn, give something back. Every contribution matters. Whether it is a gift, a willingness to share expertise, time given generously or simply a word of encouragement, each makes a difference. Together, these acts of generosity create opportunities for our students, strengthen our community and help make Habs the place it is. Thank you, on behalf of our students, staff and families, for your generosity and support. Your contribution has a direct and lasting impact on our students, opening up opportunities and enhancing their experience of school. Just as importantly, your generosity shows them the value of giving to others and playing an active part in the community around them.

BS COMMUNITY The MiniDash is a really lovely community event and as parents it gives us a chance to take part with our children. It’s nice to be able to give back, but also to take back in terms of the group energy and enthusiasm.
Volunteering for the Habs Boys Parents’ Guild is about so much more than organising events or raising money. It is about coming together as a parent community and making a positive difference to the experience our students (and their families) have at Habs. Every contribution, whether it is giving a few hours, sharing an idea, donating a prize, being a class rep or organising a group to attend a social event makes a difference. I am incredibly grateful to all the parents who give their time, energy and support to the Guild. HABS PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAMME JOSHUA PLOTKIN DIRECTOR OF PARTNERSHIPS Our mission at Habs is to enable our students to have a profound impact in the world. Our partnerships work takes this instruction literally: every single week, as part of a programme which trains, guides and builds their skills, hundreds of Habs students in Years 10 –13 mentor and teach younger children in curricular and co-curricular subjects, building powerful, trusting relationships which have a profound impact on the lives of all involved. This report aims to give a snapshot of the mutual benefit our programme provides. What it can't quite capture, though, is the "data of the soul" we see on the ground every day. That data has to be seen: it's Year 12 student Amaya's deep satisfaction in watching her Year 6 student finally able to cycle away by himself, a moment
weeks in the making. It's London Academy student Anood missing Eid celebrations at home to spend one more afternoon working with his Habs mentors in his partnerships science lesson. It's the many, many students both from Habs and from partner schools who tell us on a regular basis that partnerships sessions are the highlight of their week. For Habs students, partnerships work is part of their life at school, not volunteering or community service.
They lead our partnerships work not out of some misplaced sense of altruism or charity; they are keenly aware of how much they benefit, building their 'Habits': the resilience, leadership and communication skills they need to thrive in the modern world. This is an exciting time in the development of our partnerships work. Through a combination of donor funding and commissioning from Hertsmere Borough Council, our work is now majority-funded by sources outside of Habs. We are increasingly working not just in school settings and during the school day, but directly with the community, in the evenings, weekends and school holidays, and - in the months to come - using mobile learning hubs to meet our community where they are. Our partnership is now becoming a fully-fledged community asset, as an independent education charity called the Beyond Learning Partnership, ensuring the sustainable development of our work for the long term. Whatever we do, and wherever the future leads, our model remains the same. At its heart are students at Habs and at partner schools working together in genuine partnership, creating unmissable learning opportunities for all, built on authentic human relationships, and on the shared belief that better learning makes for better lives.

HABS PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAMME COMMUNITY PROGRAMME CASE STUDY THE WD6 COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT
The Community Mural Project perfectly encompasses everything the Habs Community Partnerships programme is about: Habs students developing their skills through wider educational experiences, local children improving their life chances through positive connection, and local service providers strengthening their engagement with the community. Over three days, ten students came together as a group at a community hub, referred to the project by their school or housing association. Two Habs students applied to work as co-facilitators, working alongside a therapeutic artist. They skilfully facilitated a safe community learning space, where young people could make new friends, grow in confidence, and express themselves through creativity. The students’ individual mural ideas grew into a collaborative piece of art they were all proud of, celebrating togetherness, diversity and joy.
Our Habs volunteers, who joined the project to step outside their comfort zone and showcase the artistic skills they’re passionate about, led on specific sections of the project. Ira took charge of drawing the outline and positioning of the mural, while Charmaine taught the students how to blend and mix paint to achieve the effect they wanted. For these students, it was a first taste of leading and mentoring younger people outside the classroom, and the enormous learning opportunities that these activities provide. The result is a wonderful legacy piece: Joy & Togetherness, now on permanent display at 101 Hartforde Road, WD6 5HY, for the whole community to enjoy. Beyond the mural itself, the project's impact has lasted well past the three days. As one of our Habs volunteers, said,
The purpose… is connection: there is something so beautiful and precious about creating a work of art that not only reflects the place you live, but everyone who worked on it.

My parents could not afford to send me to Habs, funding was met through a direct grant, and looking back I can really appreciate the great start Habs gave me. So I hope my small donation will help another family as their son or daughter embarks or continues on their Habs journey
