One with the Whale

On the tiny Bering Sea island of St. Lawrence, Alaska, whale hunting is an important part of the subsistence lifestyle of the Yupik people. When a shy teen becomes the youngest in the village to harpoon a whale to help feed his community, his family celebrates on social media. They did not expect the brutal response from animal rights activists from across the country and the ways that people would misunderstand the importance of their community’s Indigenous traditions.

Margo Robbins (above right) is a grandmother, cultural educator, healer, and Indigenous fire practitioner. She is fighting for the Yurok Tribe’s right to utilize fire for tribal land stewardship. For more than 100 years, environmentally devastating anti-fire policies have put Yurok lands at risk.

Robbins hopes to protect the lands and to open access to the natural resources needed for clean water, foodstuff, and materials for the tribe’s traditional lifeways.
