Welcome to February on RMPBS! This month we will celebrate Black History with several programs reflecting on the Black Experience. Great Migrations with Henry Louis Gates continues, the Premieres of 100 Years from Mississippi, American Masters: The Disappearance of Miss Scott, and Independent Lens: Bike Vessel to name a few. We also have the premiere of Funny Woman, Season 2, new episodes of Independent Lens, Nature, Antiques Roadshow, Finding Your Roots, NOVA, and Great Performances: Movies for Grownups Awards with the AARP Magazine. We also have four independent local productions premiering this month!

Funny Woman SEASON 2 PREMIERE

It’s the height of the swinging 60s and Barbara Parker has just been crowned Miss Blackpool – but she’s certain there has to be more to life than being a beauty queen in a seaside town. With the bright lights of London calling, Barbara packs her bags and heads off to the city where she looks to take on the male-dominated world of comedy by storm.

CELEBRATING BLACK AMERICA (BHM)

Antiques Roadshow honors Black History Month with the special episode Celebrating Black Americana. Highlights include an 1821 U.S. citizenship certificate for George Barker, a free man of color; an African American beauty book written by Madam C.J. Walker, and the first American female millionaire.

NOVA DINO BIRDS

WED Feb 5 | 8 PM

Why are birds the only dinosaurs still alive today? Rare fossil discoveries are revealing the secrets of bird evolution, telling the story of how some resilient feathered dinos became the vast array of colorful bird species that fill our skies.

A Home In Paradise LOCAL DOCUMENTARY

“A Home in Paradise” is based on the stories of four local people who share their challenges to create a healthy and secure home in Chaffee County, and their efforts to access and bridge the housing, behavioral health, and socioeconomic divide. The film is directed by Julie Speer Jackson, an Emmy Award winning filmmaker/producer who also serves as the Chaffee County Film Commissioner.

Gabriel’s Daughter (BHM)

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF CLARA BROWN

Gabriel’s Daughter the Life and Legacy of Clara Brown tells the true story of an African American pioneer by integrating the perspective of a world-premiere American opera about her life. Newly freed from enslavement, Clara walked along-side a wagon-train as a laundress and cook from Kentucky to the gold mines of Colorado. However, Clara was seeking a treasure beyond gold, she longed to find her only surviving daughter Eliza Jane, sold away from her at an auction.

Taylor’s Vision DOCUMENTARY

THUR Feb 20 | 7 PM

The story follows Taylor Aguilar, a young Latino filmmaker from Pueblo, Colorado. While pursuing her MFA at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, she was diagnosed with a rare disease that has left her blind.

Imperfect TAKING CENTER STAGE

THUR FEB 20 | 7:30 PM

A story of artists who live and perform with the uniqueness of disability. The actors open the backstage door for the viewer, giving a rare and unfiltered look at the details of their daily lives, in and out of the theatre as they persevere against obstacles in a world that excludes them. Through the Phamaly Theater Company they attempt an unprecedented version of the musical Chicago.

THE STRIKE

MON Feb 3 | 9 PM

The high security Pelican Bay prison was designed for mass-scale solitary confinement, often for a decade or more, and with little due process. In 2013, 30,000 incarcerated people went on a hunger strike that spread into a feat of unity across California prisons. The Strike follows these solitary survivors who fought to abolish indefinite isolation.

Lucas Guilkey, born and raised in California, is an award-winning filmmaker who has spent much of his career investigating systems of power and telling stories of those on the frontlines of fighting oppression. THE FILMMAKERS

JoeBill Muñoz is an awardwinning Mexican-American filmmaker, from Texas. His love for making films started as a teen, lugging around a VHS camcorder through sweltering football fields to tell the stories of kids like him with big dreams.

100 Years From Mississippi

DOCUMENTARY (BHM)

This is the journey of Mamie Lang Kirkland, a 111-year-old African American woman who returns to Mississippi a century after she survived racial terrorism full of hope and honor for its victims.

THE JOSIE JOHNSON STORY (BHM)

MON Jan 20 | 9 PM

A reflection on the life of freedom fighter and civic leader Josie Johnson, who fought for fair housing, education, and civil rights. Hear in her own words how her experiences turned her to activism. Johnson was inspired by activists who came before her, and the documentary shows how her activism continues to inspire the next generation of activists, including her grandchildren. The struggle for justice and equality continues, but there is hope in the struggle.

Born to Lead: THE SAL AUNESE STORY

SUN Feb 9 | 9 AM

Born to Lead is the story of Sal Aunese, The University of Colorado’ s star Quarterback who died of stomach cancer in 1989 and how his team promptly dedicated their season to him (which ended in CU’s national championship win). Through reflections from friends, family, and teammates, as well as rare archival footage, Born to Lead chronicles Sal’s rise to the top of his teams most valuable players and his valiant battle with the disease that took his life in 1989. Reminiscent of such poignant films of the past such as Brian’s Song and Rudy, Born to Lead is a rousing story of courage, friendship and living life against the most brutal of obstacles.

EXPEDITION KILLER WHALE

WED Feb 12 | 7 PM

This film is about a journey to Antarctica to meet a very special group of killer whales. There are only about 100 of them and they perform the most extraordinary behaviour, making waves to wash seals off pieces of floating ice. Killer whales in general are spectacular ocean creatures – but these killer whales are particularly special, exhibiting some of the most sophisticated hunting behaviour on the planet.

THE FILMMAKERS

Lara Slife is the Managing Member of Livin’ Large Productions, LLC. What began as a theatre company over ten years ago in New York City, with six successfully produced Off-Broadway plays, has transformed into a prolific full-service boutique production company for theatre, television, and film.

A son of Greek Immigrants, and a Colorado native, George Antonopoulos entered The University of Colorado in the Fall of 1986, the same semester as Sal Aunese. He became a member of Phi Kappa Tau, and earned his B.A. in Economics from CU in 1991. He then earned his M.B.A. in Finance from The Leeds School Of Business in 1994 at C.U.

Sir David Attenborough takes us on a journey through London’s world-famous Natural History Museum, revealing it as it’s never been seen before, in a compelling tale of discovery and adventure. As the doors are locked and night falls, Attenborough meets the extinct creatures that fascinate him the most, as they magically come alive in front of his eyes; dinosaurs, ice age beasts and giant reptiles. This is a special collaboration of experts and curators from the Natural History Museum and world-leading animation teams, allowing new insights into how these creatures lived and behaved.

Once thought of as a symbol of Roman sophistication, recent archaeological discoveries at Pompeii uncover a complex and dark reality that was the key to the city functioning.

The Disappearance of Miss Scott tells the story of Hazel Scott, immigrant, piano prodigy, darling of New York’s jazz scene, Hollywood star, rebel, and civil rights activist.

Nehemiah, a black dancer trapped in a pandemic lockdown in Cleveland, is called to Colorado to help create a silhouette-based dance to heal racial unrest following the death of George Floyd. Nehemiah must find the courage to participate in a project which will transform everyone in unexpected ways.

Knowing his dad miraculously recovered from three open heart surgeries after discovering a passion for cycling, filmmaker Eric D. Seals proposes an ambitious idea: Bike together from St. Louis to Chicago…350 miles in 4 days.

AWARDS WITH AARP THE MAGAZINE 2025

SUN Feb 23 | 6 PM

Iconic and beloved screen and stage performer Alan Cumming returns as host for this awards show in which eight-time Academy Award winner Glenn Close receives the Career Achievement Award.
