Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel, Cleveland Architect: Cooper Carry Interior Design: Anderson/Miller Ltd. Lighting Design: Yarnell Assocs. LLC Architectural Lighting Design At 32 stories and 600 guest rooms, the Hilton Cleveland Downtown has assumed the role of the city’s largest hotel. On the exterior, lighting designer Bruce Yarnell’s slender, angled, fullheight illuminated shaft marks the building’s place on the skyline.

Inside, materials and artworks follow angular geometric interpretations. The lobby’s terrazzo floor triangles and other freeform patterns are in shades of gray, from pale to charcoal with silver-tone accents. Overhead, an interplay of LED linear fixtures introduces applied lighting art to become a focal point clearly visible from all angles.

In the lobby, a free-standing cylindrical screen fabricated from two-inch-wide black steel in a lattice-work pattern defines the space. Anchored on a black stone-filled base, the screen is slightly canted to contrast with the strong surrounding horizontal and vertical angles. Additional dimension to the screen was achieved by light beams aimed through its lower section, casting shaped shadows on the floor surface.

Yarnell adapted the angled ceiling fixtures from the lobby to the main ballroom. Crystal-clad extended LED rods splay out from the ceiling, covered overall with triangles in shades of gray.

In between are recessed black slots containing downlights for the room’s ambient illumination.

Hancher Auditorium, Univ. of Iowa, Iowa City Architect: Pelli Clarke Pelli Lighting: Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Winner of a 2017 IALD Award of Excellence, the university in its brief asked the design team to “Give us something we’ve never seen before.”

Cline Bettridge Bernstein’s design highlights the pastoral setting reflected in the architecture while creating a breathtaking experience for patrons. A custom light fixture with a dropped lens lights the wood ceiling and describes the form of the building inside and out, dissolving barriers between interior and exterior. IALD notes it achieves notable purposes: its form and layout recalls a modern marquee, announcing the building’s purpose as a theater; it creates rivulets of light relating to the river below.

“THIS IS A SPACE THAT CELEBRATES ANTICIPATION. NICE TWIST ON AN OLD RECESSED DOWNLIGHT IDEA,” PRONOUCED IALD JUDGES. The lighting in the soaring atrium accentuates the space’s height and gives it scale. The core wall is outlined with grazers in shielded, solite-lensed slots. This detail, repeated twice more, according to IALD, breaks up the massive surface. The elevator core is lit top-to-bottom with the same detail. Within the theater itself, monumental custom fixtures create an awe-inspiring ceiling, while ingenious front-of-balcony lights make the house sparkle and glow. Partial arcs of these fixtures adjacent to the perimeter walls create the illusion that the lighting extends beyond the theater— again, notes IALD, dissolving boundaries and barriers between spaces and creating a dynamic, engaging experience. The rings feature glowing lenses and decorative illuminated points that can be programmed to sparkle and chase.

Runner Camp, Shanghai Architect and Lighting Design: Prism Design, with Office Coastline Expressing one’s personal style for all activities is a popular form of visual communication in Shanghai.

For the 6,700-sq.-ft. Runner Camp in the Infinite Plaza Shopping Center, Prism Design created a bilevel shopping environment for the display of apparel and equipment that encourages a healthy active lifestyle. The store’s merchandising approach is a colorful integration of an industrial design background, with orange color-infused apparel and accessories using strategically placed illumination.

For the urban, industrial look, Prism Design selected metal grids, acoustic fiber board, and concrete for walls and stairs. To partner with and enhance the sport-oriented clothing selection, the choice was orange acrylic, stainless steel wire drawings and frosted metal boards. The store’s two levels are connected by a broad stair outlined in LEDs. The first floor is dedicated to Runner Camp’s sales-stimulating product arrangements, while the second level is multifunctional. Exercise classes are held here along with a sport training area which is equipped with an LED screen

The facility, originally built in 1983, features more than 12,000-sq.-ft. of flexible indoor and outdoor spaces and more than 14,000-sq.-ft. of conference space. Working with Hubbell, the hotel’s design team selected Prescolite’s LB6LEDA downlights, to establish a cohesive, glare-free color throughout the facility. The LB6 meets today’s most stringent energy codes, including California’s Title 24.

Galata Tower, Istanbul, Turkey Lighting Design: Lightstyle A towering icon for citizens and visitors, the tower is one of Istanbul’s most well-known landmarks. Lighting designers Nergiz Arifoglu Lightstyle aimed to create an impressive design to emphasize the tower’s architectural features.

The new colorful LED lighting also enables the tower to project itself as an urban icon in the heart of the cultural and artistic Beyoglu district.

The renovation was undertaken without affecting access to public areas inside and around the tower. The tower’s upper section and spire were equipped with Philips Color Kinetics PowerCore fixtures, which present the opportunity to apply millions of colors and stunning light effects.

The designers succeeded in creating a design that suits and respects both the tower and Istanbul’s night skyline, and is a source of pride for its citizens.

Lighting Design: Domingo Gonzalez Assocs. (DGA) Along the 18.5-acre site in Nashville’s growing “South of Broadway” or “SoBro” neighborhood, the West Riverfront Park and Amphitheatre is adjacent to the Cumberland River. Comprised of a 12-acre park and 6.5-acre riverfront area, and adjacent to the iconic Shelby Street Bridge, it is being developed for visitor and resident enjoyment. DGA’s scope included creating sustainable lighting design guidelines and master plan documents for the waterfront esplanade, park walkways, 1,000-person amphitheater, and public restrooms and amenities.

Formerly occupying the acreage was a waste-to-energy conversion facility. Riverfront Park and the open-air Amphitheater have now become a vibrant beacon in the downtown Nashville skyline. Carefully positioned RGBW color-changing luminaires emphasize the amphitheater’s curving outline and surface materials.

Cowl lighting accentuates the structure’s form.

Stage-wall lighting and uplighting are mounted above the trusswork that frames the view of downtown Nashville. RGBW luminaires occurring at the cowl, stage, and the outer shell of the structure are combined with an architectural dimming system for performances.

On non-show nights the roles reverse, as the amphitheater defaults to a muted white while park lighting is brought up to full intensity. At park curfew, the lighting dims to conserve energy and consideration of nearby residential communities.

Concealed are 3000K luminaires in railings, in grade, and within overhangs in structures to lluminate pathways, signage, and to softly graze the Park’s limestone walls. Custom-designed curving light poles are elevated on pylons along the promenade to define the park perimeter and light the roadway and greenway. At night along the promenade, a color changing undulating ribbon sculpture creates meandering curves echoing the river’s profile.

The designation of Canada was derived after “kanata,” the HuronIroquois word for settlement. During the second of his three voyages to the New World, Cartier discovered a native village at the base of a large mountain, which he named Mont Real.

In 1930, to commemorate Cartier and the historic founding of the city, the 1.6-mile-long Jacques Cartier Bridge was constructed, a five-lane structure that connects Montréal to Longueuil. Long recognized as an icon on the cityscape, city administration budgeted $39.5 million for improvements and contemporary lighting to integrate the bridge with Montréal’s lively urban ambience. To celebrate the city’s 375th birthday and Canada’s 150th, completion date was May 17, 2017.

Moment Factory led a team of six expert multi-disciplinary a/v firms. “Living Connections” was the name assigned to the design and implementation of the program’s lighting segment.
