SSL is evolving technologically by leaps and bounds, but still needs visionaries to make it jump, let alone soar.

New shapes and finishes are at the forefront of decorative interior luminaires, as more designers are making use of discreet nature of LED. Architects too, are beginning to realize how nearly invisible light sources can bring a whole new face to “boring” or pedestrian spaces, especially in retrofit scenarios.

It's quite an apt way to describe how buildings and their surroundings are now being illuminated at night. Days of flat wall washing are over, as many new products allow designers to articulate buildings, and in a manner that not only looks great, but doesn't intrude elsewhere.

From airports in Walla Walla, to high-end residences in Dubai, lighting designers are really able to strut their stuff in fantastically illuminating all kinds of buildings and structures now that controls and RGB products allow the unleashing of the proverbial kid in the candy store.

Literally allowing the art of light to flourish, specialty products, such as theatrical projectors and tape light, allow light masters to create magic from eerie climate change installations in Holland, to new forms of greeting at one of Manhattan's swank hotels.

Montmagny Courthouse, Montmagny, Quebec Architect and Lighting Design: CCM2, GroupeA and Roy-Jacques Architects Lighting Design: LumiGroup Serving as the region’s county seat, the courthouse in 2014, underwent a 47,000-sq.-ft. addition to link three new courtrooms and spaces for municipal services to the 1800s-era facility. A consortium of architects in collaboration with LumiGroup were responsible for the lighting. From the entrance, the ceiling is lit by a fluorescent line guiding guests toward a grand staircase. Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre, Leeds, U.K. Architect: Chapman Taylor Lighting design and installation: StudioTech Covering a million sq. ft., Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre at the Leeds City Centre is the most important urban development in the UK in the last decade. In its first year, the three-level shopping entertainment project attracted more than 22 million visitors to its shops, restaurants and entertainment destinations.

The sweeping glass dome covering the shopping and entertainment section, 100 ft. above the first level, consists of 982 individual, fully addressable RGB LED nodes with an intricate control system that was designed and installed

by StudioTech.

Each node is placed at the corners of the 5-ft.square sections that comprise the roof surface.

Nodes are mounted to a custom-made acrylic stem that protrudes by up to 8 in. in the center and then reduces to a point as it reaches the bottom of the arcade roof. The system is programmed for a variety of special effects such as “Aurora Borealis” that run on an eight-day cycle.

To balance the natural light outside with the relatively low ceiling height at the entrances, the designers relied on high levels of tunable light. Clusters of light boxes with alternating cool-white linear fluorescent lamps are utilized in combination with RGB linear LED runs. During daylight hours, fluorescent sources are tuned to balance the surrounding retail spill. At dusk, the fluorescents are dimmed and the LEDs switch on to create an illuminated canopy beneath the night sky.

For Bolon, China’s largest eyewear manufacturer and major international sunglass distributor, illuminated custom display fins identify the merchandise as individual works of wearable art.

For its first retail flagship store for Bolon in Shanghai, Ippolito Fleitz Group and Pfarré Lighting Design established a sophisticated display environment that makes the customer’s selection process both creative and personally satisfying. Each horizontal display panel or fin in the 1,100-sq.-ft. space is illuminated by an invisible LED strip behind the rear edge. Visible edges are painted white. A customized LED spot with an oval lens is projected onto the sample frames on each fin so that it can be appreciated and differentiated from its neighbors.

Overhead is a highly reflective foil ceiling panel. A group of fins have been mounted on the ceiling so that the outlines of frames are visible when the viewer looks up. Light pads are installed in freestanding display vitrines and in wall niches. Direct product lights in the niches accent the frames and contribute to the overall

Smart Lighting—Should I Wait?

As there becomes more and more reasons to adopt smart lighting tech— much of it surrounding the benefits of human centric lighting (HCL)—the question of cost remains, as does the continued development of technology.

So, when’s the best window to make a decision. Now is appropriate. And if you commit now, it should not cost that much to periodically upgrade smart or color-tunable fixtures, while keeping the existing tunable lighting fixtures.

Why is now the time? Knowledgeable end-customers and users should understand that typical fixed CCT lighting, no matter how efficient, is a wasted effort.

Luminaries, Brookfield Place, Manhattan Lighting Design: David Rockwell Architect and all-around Renaissance designer David Rockwell has for years watched crowds congregate to view the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. In 2015, Rockwell felt it was time for lower Manhattan to mount a similar visual celebration mega-statement.

He eschewed traditional holiday embellishments of tinsel, blinking lights, and dangling ornaments in favor of his own interpretation of the three-dimensional holiday spirit with a suspended illuminated sculpture he titled “Luminaries.” Commissioned by Arts Brookfield, a sweeping panorama of 650 LED-lit floating cubic lanterns was installed above the Winter Garden atrium at Brookfield Place on the Hudson River waterfront. The building, formerly known as the World Financial Center before its renovation, offers luxury shops and upscale restaurants.

Its architectural details include bespoke bone white china pendants that use Soraa lights to illuminate each seat individually. Downlight LEDs create the drama in the restaurant’s starlit ceiling and illuminate the beautiful, blue glass balustrade. “Lighting is a critical element for enhancing the Yauatcha City brand. We chose Soraa lamps because of their specialty illumination quality, functionality and versatility,” said Claire Hamill, Senior Designer for Paul Nulty Lighting Design. “Soraa’s unique technology casts more light from a smaller source and renders truer colors, which helped us create a unique atmosphere, while maintaining a level of intimacy for diners.”

Architect: TVA Architects Lighting Design: Biella Lighting Design Nike’s latest expansion of its Beaverton Creek, Ore. campus brings the total number of square feet occupied by the world’s largest sports footwear, apparel and equipment brand to 2.2 million. Located on a sprawling complex seven miles west of Portland, it opened in 1990.

Over 8,000 employees are currently housed in more than 20 buildings on the site, which is the headquarters for its domestic and international markets.

An additional 500 employees are now working in two new multilevel structures. TVA Architects, designers for one of the buildings, collaborated with Biella Lighting Design for many of the spaces within the open-plan layout. A pendant-hung LED fixture, Prisma PR1650 from Luminis Lighting was selected as the single source for the project. With its crisp black and glass profile, it serves to visually integrate with the casual, contemporary theme of many of the spaces, and with others that have an open-ceiling, industrial look.

A decade ago, the hot topic was the availability of affordable, exciting and inspired color sources that allowed designers to paint light inside and outside, from public structures to the walls of children’s hospital wards.

While this has continued to grow, with numerous awe-inspiring installations founded on the unique capabilities of solid-state technology, recent introductions of changeable white light products is equally intriguing.

The introduction of dim-to-warm over the past couple of years was a first step forward. Now, there are sources capable of delivering white light from 2,200K to 6,500K separately dimmed, or integrated into a dim/color profile of virtually infinite possibilities. Tunable white light means matching daylight, or creating mood effect, enhancing visual performance, and supporting user preference. Its glazed façade with an exterior curtain of gold anodized aluminum mesh attracts patrons with views to the first floor lobby and counter and the curving steel staircase leading to the dining area on the top floor. The richly articulated illuminated façade gives the building a contemporary relationship to the surrounding classic buildings.

Carnegie Hall, New York City Architects: Iu + Bibliowicz Architects Lighting Concept: Kugler Ning Lighting Design The well-known directions to successfully arrive at Carnegie Hall by “Practice, Practice, Practice” are significantly less daunting than designing the lighting for the exterior of the revered 125-year-old National Historic Landmark that occupies the corner of Seventh Avenue and Fiftyseventh Street in New York. Lighting designers Kugler Ning joined the team participating in the extensive overall masterplan renovation program that involved lighting for the classic exterior that never before had its façades professionally illuminated.

Kugler Ning’s development of the lighting program took into consideration final placement of LED luminaires to meet 11different mounting conditions.

All optics and shielding had to meet Landmark requirements, and avoid light spill and trespass to nearby buildings. Onsite mock-ups were conducted between midnight and 6 AM to assure the correct mix of luminaires and lamps to define the classic beauty of the combined primary exterior materials: iron spot brick, terracotta, and painted metal.

Final specifications for the north- and westfacing façades were proprietary 2700K white LED strips by Philips Color Kinetics, and LED fixtures from Winona Lighting for the streetlevel lunettes. Preset dimming controls are programmed to bring up the lights up to pre-set levels as the sun sets. The project was honored by an Award of Excellence presented in 2015 by the IES New York chapter.

Artist Thérèse Lahaie envisioned her site-specific design as a reflection of the intersection’s movement and energy. Choosing to imitate the saturated colors of the streetscape when illuminated by its stoplights and pedestrian signals, Lahaie worked with a mosaic of light in reds, greens, yellows and whites. The design incorporates LuciteLux panels in Opal White Acrylic. The material offers excellent brightness and evenness of illumination and has been specifically formulated to give optimized color performance with both transmitted and reflected light using white LEDs. In-ground LED fixtures illuminate two groupings of winged tree forms: 31 in the garden area and 41 at the front entry. Rolstad’s design incorporated structural aluminum trees with layered dichroic royal blue and translucent structural acrylic wing forms depicting the forward movement of air transportation as well as the area’s exponential growth.

Waterlicht, Amsterdam Design: Studio Roosegaarde, Rotterdam Amsterdam is one of cities worldwide that faces immediate peril from rising sea levels. Waterlicht is an illuminated social statement, expressing eco-anxiety by combining LEDs, lasers, programmed projectors, a generating motor and custom software. Staged at Amsterdam’s Museum Square, it is the creation of artist Daan Roosegaarde and his social design lab team. The effect relies on steam machines to produce the mist that captures the light. LEDs were installed around the periphery of the plaza and projected through lenses to focus the light. Seven powerful LED lights were mounted at a height of six-anda-half feet. “The movement of the lights, coupled with the undulating movement of the mists created by the steam, creates the effect of waves and currents,” Roosegaarde says.

Pink Lotus, Penisula Hotel, New York Lighting Design: Grimanesa Amorós, New York For six weeks in the fall of 2015, above the entrance canopy on the front façade of The Peninsula New York, was a swirl of pink, red, and white LEDs. Created by the New York-based light artist Grimanesa Amorós, the LED tendrils spill out from a central raised circle of bright white LED lamps. The threedimensional sculpture is visible for several blocks from its location on Fifth Avenue at Fifty-fifth Street. The 23-story-high landmark Peninsula building received its first guests in 1905.

A BREAST CANCER AWARENESS INITIATIVE, THE SCULPTURE WAS INSPIRED BY CARVINGS ON THE FAÇADE. Amorós describes the concept for her sculpture as being inspired by two carvings on the hotel’s façade of the female Roman goddesses, Ceres and Diana.
