To Tell the 2030 Truth, or Bigfoot’s Silver Skates It was difficult for me to get my work groove established on that Monday between the holidays—our email server, too, had suffered a holiday hangover, so I decided to go for a walk, despite the cold, which was only “just” freezing. Here is a fact I learned: Freezing is freezing… My trek, you see, took me adjacent to the now-frozen Illinois and Michigan Canal, which cuts through my town. In passing a couple of footbridges, I couldn’t help but think of the story of Hans Brinker and his Silver Skates, and the frozen waterways of Amsterdam, and that it might be fun to skate the waterway. Amsterdam, for a number of its ecoinitiatives, popped up quite a few times in the pages of our news section this past year—not the least for adaptively converting many of the city’s bridge houses into hotel rooms.

All this prosaic “skating,” of course, is going somewhere, and that’s the status of climate change discussion in 2021. Pardon one more digression that somewhat frames the conversation: the appearance

Perhaps it was connected to deforestation in general, or even the horrible wildfires that plagued the West this year, but Sasquatch recently found himself at the center of the new “To Tell the Truth” TV show. In this case, the program’s guests were trying to reveal a “real” Bigfoot hunter. All, dubiously, gravitated to one man—“He had all the facts.” However, when host Anthony Anderson challenged, asking, “what facts did this man lay out?” his guests had difficulty expounding.

Sometimes in the climate change discussion, proponents find themselves in a similar quandary.

Here are some facts that might make for smoother skating. Johnson Controls released its annual Energy Efficiency Indicator survey, which found that more than half of the organizations it surveyed plan to increase investment in energy efficiency, renewable energy and smart building technology in 2021.

Results proved in line with investment trends following the 2010 recession. A majority (85%) said that reducing energy costs was important, but more than three-quarters believed that protecting the health and safety of occupants during emergencies was “extremely” important. “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to improve the health and safety of buildings, particularly by increasing their

ability to operate under different conditions, both planned and unforeseen,” said Clay Nesler, vice president of global energy and sustainability at JCI. Despite reduced occupancy, the study found that facility energy use dropped surprisingly little during the pandemic, with less than 10% of facilities reducing energy use more than 20%. As the world learns more about the spread of COVID through aerosol transmission, indoor air quality has become one of the most pressing issues for facility managers to address. The survey found that 79% have already, or are planning, to increase air filtration; three-quarters have already, or are planning, to install an air treatment system; and 72% have already, or are planning, to increase outdoor air ventilation rates.

Another highlight of the study found growing interest in net-zero-energy buildings and resiliency, with 70% of organizations very, or extremely likely, to have one or more facilities that are nearly zero, net zero, or that achieve positive energy or carbon status in the next 10 years—an increase of 7% from 2019. Further, two-thirds of organizations are very likely to have one or more facilities able to operate off the grid in the next 10 years—an increase of 3% from 2019. Additionally, 63% of organizations invested in onsite renewable energy in 2020, a 22% increase from the organizations that said they were planning to do so in 2019.

So, in client sustainability conversations, if you find yourself having to prove climate change is no Bigfoot—and be aware the big guy, like Hans Brinker, has earned silver skates, and thus is that much harder to bring down—try dropping some of these facts on him as he skates under our bridges.

New York’s Urban Green Council report, “Going Electric,” identifies nine crucial steps to jump start electrification in the city’s large multifamily buildings in order to facilitate compliance with New York City’s groundbreaking building emissions law (Local Law 97), as well as the longer-term target of an 80% carbon reduction by 2050. To do so buildings will need to go electric as far as HVAC. That transition

Preserving Landmarks While Creating Access Can older buildings continue to provide equal access for all? This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, better known as the ADA, a landmark civil rights’ law protecting people with disabilities from discrimination and providing for equal access. According to architects at Page & Turnbull, early opposition by preservation advocates to the ADA’s impact on historic buildings has evolved into a success story of architectural improvements— and even a shift in attitude—that makes our cultural resources more available to everyone.

“Today, architects are helping building owners find more creative and innovative ways to modify landmarks to be more accessible without drastic changes or exorbitant costs, thus helping preserve our built legacy,” says architect Todd Smith, ,  , a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) and senior associate with Page & Turnbull, a preservation architect firm that has made historic buildings accessible nationally, from Boston to San Francisco. “Even when budgets are limited, architects have the tools and technology to address accessibility in previously unimagined ways.”

The current pandemic has heightened awareness of the inequities faced by the disabled community— and ADA’s benefits—adds Page & Turnbull architect Elisa Skaggs, , reminding us that people with disabilities have greater difficulty achieving equality in employment, education, transportation, and even in recreation, such as the historic cabins in national parks. Many such historic structures have longstanding barriers such as stairs, small elevators and narrow corridors, or inaccessible restrooms.

City Hall, Stanford University’s Roble Hall Dormitory, and the Sacramento Valley Station and Depot, among others. Many have faced stiff opposition from ardent preservationists.

Universal design, the design approach allowing use by literally all, has been the goal of acclaimed Page & Turnbull Works. The Walt Disney Family Museum, adapted from a historic military barrack with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, allows every visitor—whether walking, on wheels, in a stroller, or otherwise—to follow the same discovery path through the museum, including along a dramatic ramp linking two floors of the main exhibit hall.

The firm’s impact has not gone unnoticed. In a recent panel discussion, and an article in Future Anterior, Wanda Katja Liebermann highlights design leadership by Page & Turnbull’s Skaggs on a controversial ADA ramp created for the Board of Supervisors’ chamber in San Francisco City Hall. An assistant professor of architecture at Florida Atlantic University, Liebermann has shown how “politicization of access through the idea of lost architectural heritage reframes access as optional, suspending (indefinitely) the implementation of civil rights.” Page & Turnbull’s work, as the panel at Columbia University framed the topic, offers “new perspectives on human impairment, which helps reimagine the reconstruction and maintenance of the built past.”

Landmarks of Access Rights “When presented with the challenge of providing access to historic buildings, we look for solutions that integrate accessibility with dignity and that preserve

the character of the building,” says Skaggs. “This was the case at City Hall, where a curved ramp was seamlessly woven into the space and allowed disabled politicians equal access to the dais in the Board of Supervisors’ Chamber.”

Smith adds that while the ADA is the best-known law, the history of civil rights’ legislation for those with disabilities is even older. The Architectural Barriers Act enacted in 1968 covered all federal Projects, and prior to ADA the state of California made public buildings—and even privately funded buildings— accessible in 1970, while the Fair Housing Act made much new housing accessible before 1990. Some of the first curb ramps and citywide accessible routes appeared in Berkeley, Calif., home to the Center for Independent Living, a group formed in 1972 and now widely seen as a leader in the access rights community. “What is interesting,” says Smith, “is that those buildings integrating the first accessibility standards are now becoming historic, too.”

Surf’s Up As noted in my opening column, one of the great challenges of 2021 will be balancing the desire to push forward with 2030 goals, while being conscientious about budget considerations, or the fact that projects might not get built at all, let alone to high standards of sustainability and resiliency.

One path designers might want to pursue, according to one of the nation’s leading sustainability experts, might lie in approaching things from a “triple” bottom line that factors, not only ROI from energy savings, but company/organizational environmental/carbon-reduction goals,

(Check it, and many other great sessions, out on YouTube). There, she delivered her “Environmental Surfing” lecture, where she pleaded for greater incorporation of passive daylighting and ventilation measures for all projects.

“Deep conservation can cut all these costs by a third. And if we combine such measures with more passive solar strategies, it will also decrease 40% of today’s lighting loads.”

The issue, the respected professor pointed out, is that even simple passive strategies, such as light shelves and louvers, are the first things to be, typically, value-engineered out. The case, sustainably minded designers need to argue, she said, must go beyond pure energy savings, as the ability to, at least temporarily, separate ourselves from energy consumption, creates resiliency, which creates owner value. “The ability to be ‘off’ is resilient—we can still work with no power or heat. But blowing air 24/7 is not resilient at all.”

Part of what sold them was confidence in the proposed zoned HVAC system. For the 1.5-story, all-electric, PV-powered, 1,750sq.-ft. structure, which is encased with ZIP System R-Sheathing, open-cell spray insulation, and double- and triple-paned glass— the roof deck has an R-Value of 28 and the walls have a value of R-20—an equally

efficient mechanical system was necessary.

The couple and their contractor turned to Mitsubishi Electric's Performance Construction Team, and its Zoned Comfort Solutions.

Specifically, four MSZ Wall-Mounted Indoor Units were specified, each connecting to a corresponding outdoor compressor. To bring in fresh outside air, a third-party energy recovery ventilator was also specified. A jumper-duct system, putting inline fans in the closets and bathrooms, helped avert negative pressure, often brought on by installing continuously running fans that utilize suction to bring in fresh air.

To deal with winter, the units utilize HyperHeating INVERTER (H2i) technology, which deliver heat in temperatures as low as -13˚F. The home received a HERS score of −10, the lowest HERS score ever from the Green Built Alliance, a local organization that supports the construction of green homes.

More importantly, the couple loves the look.

“The wall-mounted unit is beautiful. It is 50% more efficient than the next best thing. Why wouldn’t I want that? In addition, they are pretty sleek looking,” says Sally Schmeltzer.

Slowing demand at architecture firms last year is expected to contribute to a projected 5.7% decline in construction spending for 2021, according to a new forecast from AIA. Comprised of leading economic forecasters, the Consensus Construction Forecast Panel—expects steep declines this year in construction spending on office buildings, hotels, and amusement and recreation centers. Healthcare and public safety are the only major sectors that are slated to produce gains in 2021.

That said, growth in nonresidential construction is expected for 2022, with 3% gains projected for the overall building market matched by both the commercial and institutional sectors.

“The December jobs report confirmed that the economy needs additional support in order to move to a sustainable economic expansion,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “As pandemic concerns begin to wane and economic activity begins to pick up later in 2021, there is likely to be considerable pent-up demand for nonresidential space, leading to anticipated growth in construction spending in 2022.”

Environmental ‘Surfing’ Not so Tough It just may be the addition of the accounting of human benefits as part of the ROI formula that could help designers influence clients to make the jump to passive house or net zero.

While energy savings, and resiliency measures, absolutely, factor into justifying the cost of deep conservation measures, it might be the addition of the accounting of human benefits, as part of a comprehensive ROI formula, that will help designers win the day for passive house or net-zero initiatives for clients and owners hesitant to make the jump. So says Carnegie Mellon Professor Vivian Loftness, a participant in international skylight manufacturer Velux’ most recent Daylight Symposium in Paris, in the Fall of 2019.

Here are some numbers, Loftness said, design teams should plug in right off the bat:  External shading can displace 20%-40% of today’s cooling loads;  Natural ventilation can displace 50%-70% of today’s ventilation loads;  Daylight harvesting can displace 75% of today’s lighting loads.

“Every window has to meet the need for natural light, natural ventilation and views,” said Loftness.

The next step however, is to factor carbon reduction from such measures; doing so, she said, saves about $0.02/kWh, and drops ROI to about 6.5 years, from pure energy’s more typical eight-year payback.

Of course, passive thinking takes a different design mindset. For example, she pointed out a passively designed convention center in Cape Town, Africa, where only lecture/break-out rooms were conditioned. Aggressive night cooling also needs to be part of this equation.

She warned designers, however, to be careful

of technology as a means to cut corners. “LED has been extremely helpful—it has cut lighting loads by half to two thirds. But in some ways, it is making people sloppy again,” said the professor. “Adding in daylight response controls, and designing around daylight—that is where we can really get going and make a difference—and we are not even tapping into renewables, yet.”

Of course, Loftness said all decisions must be made based on their occupant outcomes. The good news is this is something Carnegie Mellon has been studying. Views, for example, they've found, really matter. “So your view plane and kick plates become really critical. And if you are incorporating natural ventilation strategies, the entire façade plays a role.”

As for the third factor—human benefits—they may be the most important of the "accounting" metrics. For example, at a call center for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, call times, for workers with views, improved 6% to 7%. According to the 2004 Preziosi study, buildings featuring natural ventilation saw a 57% reduction in employee sickness absenteeism; hospitals studied saw a drop in patient stay time by nearly 35%. In an RPI study of students at a North Carolina grade school, children with aggressive daylight measures fell asleep in half the time on average.

This year Italian manufacturers were clearly inspired by the effects with motifs and colors that conjure the feeling of a crisp day or cozy night by the fire. Organic hues like earthy browns, golden yellows and burgundy reds are a few autumnal examples alongside tiles with natural effects like wood and stone in a warm palette. Collection names like “Matter” and “Husk” and colorways like “Autumn” further solidify this trend.

Nothing dazzles like a bag full of confetti, which is the same effect that these tiles have on interior spaces.

Whether the designs are a kaleidoscope of colors or floating fragments of shapes, the patterns lend a burst of energy to floors and walls. According to color theorists, blue-green combines the tranquil effects of blue with the optimistic feeling of green, which is much needed. CONCRETE

Concrete is a ubiquitous building material that has allowed creative architectural expression since ancient times. The Romans used it to build the dome of the Pantheon nearly 2,000 years ago—an engineering marvel that still stands today. Modernists used it to create load-bearing columns that would make their buildings appear lighter.

REPLACEMENT

Renovation Nods to Past When it came time to replace the roof at the Jardine Water Filtration Plant in Chicago—the world’s largest—the design team wanted to upgrade the roof’s barrier material, yet maintain the security of a redundant roofing system that had kept operations running seamlessly for decades.

While the membrane and structure were selected for an upgrade, the cellular glass did not show any signs of deflection or movement. Convinced by its performance, the design team chose once again to use cellular glass, in part, for its make up: recycled glass.

The building’s 10-acre roof was constructed more than 50 years ago, and consisted of a membrane and Owens Corning FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation.

The chemical reaction during production produces millions of hermetically sealed bubbles. This closed-cell matrix is impervious to moisture, including

vapor. It is strong, but lightweight: The lowest compressive strength for cellular glass is 50-70 psi. In the case of the Jardine plant, the roof had to carry heavy snows, while not adding extraneous weight to the building, which sits over an intricate system of tunnels.

“Data collected for a project is only valuable if it is accessible,” explains BVH Architect Adam Sitzmann, .

“With Layer, the information is always in front of us. This maximizes our efficiencies.”

What is unique about the development of the app is that it was created in response to a specific challenge and was tweaked along with its end-users in the field. “There’s no better way to go about building a product than working directly with the people using it,” stated Soflin in a recent Business of Architecture podcast with Enoch Sears.

Brought in to preserve more than 1300 historic steel and bronze windows at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln as part of a long-term  systems upgrade,  Architecture began the tedious job of performing a detailed survey of the existing conditions in 1365 rooms of approximately 600,000 sq. ft. of conditioned space. In collating 39,000 photos and 100,000 pieces of unique data, the team wondered if there was a more efficient way to proceed. Team member Zach Soflin, , began researching digital tools, but found no single solution, so he built his own. What emerged was Layer, a -plugin which enabled the team to “layer” contextual data on top of an

Consequently, Layer’s functionality was expanded to document site visits, from facility audits and field reports to punch lists support design coordination and redlines to better coordinate design decisions and manage projects; and connect furniture, fixtures and equipment manufacturers to the architects’ Revit model.

Honing in on office number 2114, assorted photos of the windows, frames and sills can be easily accessed with the Layer BIM-plugin.

A highly detailed Layer description of each window classifies its parameters such as whether it contains a UV film, if it has an interior or exterior grille and its condition, the glass condition, if the glass is textured or patterned, and if the glass contains non-historic insulated glazing.

Remodeling a 50-Year-Old School As part of a larger upgrade to the half-century-old Garfield Elementary in Olympia, Wash., teachers requested reading nooks with bookshelves by windows. Prior to the remodel, the school had very little natural light and learning pods placed within hallways were especially dark.

McGranahan Architects designed window seats for each classroom so students could enjoy outside views and reading by natural light. Milgard Ultra Series picture and casement windows were installed throughout the school building. “The window is where energy passes quicker than the rest of the building. Choosing the right window is very important, including the size of it and the glazing,” explains Ko Wibowo, McGranahan Architects.

After the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office rejected a window manufacturer looking to replace the windows from an early 20th century machine shop, Crosskey Architects turned to Graham Windows. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the adaptive reuse of the former American Graphophone Co. now houses the Great Oaks Charter School and an adjacent residential space in Bridgeport, Conn.

To replace the rather large existing windows, Graham provided 680 SR6700 Steel Replica windows in fixed and fixed/projected configurations to simulate the authentic look of the original steel factory windows. The windows met the structural performance needs and historic requirements.

An Architecture Masterprize winner in the mixed-use category, the Diamond Exchange, Capital C in Amsterdam, originally built in 1911, has been transformed, including the “High Light,” a glass and steel dome that added space for various corporate events and gatherings.

The faceted diamondlike form, by ZJA with Heyligers design + projects, is reminiscent of the building's

original purpose as a facility for processing the importation of diamonds. Much of the renovation restored the original Gerrit van Arkel design, but also adapted the interior for use as a modern, flexible, office environment. The project has won numerous other design awards.

What is the formula for a “perfect” HQ? The answer is a bit complex, and, certainly, will vary with the parties involved, but it’s safe to suggest it requires a combination of quiet workspaces; “show” spaces for those big client walk-throughs and meetings; and cuttingedge AV-laden teamwork areas.

A POST-COVID PLAN

Workplaces the past five to 10 years frequently packed as many employees as possible into an openoffice plan. Given the impact of COVID, those same employees have

gotten used to working from home, and like many of its benefits.

In fact, according to Gordon Wright, , Associate , Director of WorkPlace for HOK, the question designers must ask, what will influence them to want to come back?

There is no doubt that the open office pendulum is swinging back, but it is not gone. One thing that may help, according to Kelly Dubisar, , Design Director, Gensler, San Francisco, is the “layering” of space types.

Today’s workplace requires a variety of

space types, from private to public, collaborative to personal.

Desks and offices may still be unassigned to allow for greater flexibility, yet “neighborhoods” are being born out of the desire to create intimacy and flexibility.

As we move into the new decade, four trends are emerging: 1) Growth of the “Hub;” 2) Infusing equity principles into design; 3) Design following company culture; and 4) “Neighborhoods” surfacing to house teams.

As organizations bring their employees back into the office, they may need to redefine the purpose of each workspace. Wright suggests, a well-designed, welcoming hub will drive the return to work.

Employees who feel comfortable, supported and collaborative will want to return to the office, rather than remain at home.

At the same time, the world is clearly moving toward a hybrid workforce. Most people will be working largely remotely, coming into the office once or twice a week to push a collaborative project forward. So, Dubisar argues, workplaces will need to allow for flexibility. Some will want more privacy; some will want more openness. Therefore, she says, creating semi-enclosed workspaces, including semi-transparent and semi-opaque spaces, that “radiate” from the hub, so to speak, can help achieve a sense of privacy in a larger open environment.

Trend 2: Bringing Equity Into Design Equity is an important buzzword today, and it’s no less important in HQ design. Trend 3: Unique Company Culture, Unique Design Design is not just about tables, desks and chairs. Today’s organizations want a space that is not only comfortable, but also reflects the company culture and personality. Wright encourages his clients to clearly articulate the values and culture to ensure it is represented in the office space.

Dubisar offers a variety of ways to do this, from highlighting natural surroundings and place markers to representing the industry itself in the design. For example, at the Hyatt Hotels HQ in Chicago, Dubisar brings out Chicago as Hyatt’s HQ city by incorporating local materials, including wood, stone and

concrete. At the same time, however, there was also a focus on the hospitality industry.

The entire workspace mimics a hotel, from the elevator at the entry point to the full service café, which operates as a coffee bar by day—and a wine bar by night.

other hand, the connection to place went back to the company’s roots.

Although the office is located in San Francisco, the design aesthetic is strongly Scandinavian.

In addition, they wanted more of a homey feel, so there are smaller spaces, a dining room that stands in for a boardroom, and sofas for seating.

New Brunswick Performing Arts Center | New Brunswick, N.J.

Come Together: New Jersey Project Combines Theaters and Residences

A project that combines the best of entertainment and residential living adds a show-stopping structure to the community in New Brunswick, N.J. The New Brunswick Performing Arts Center opened in September 2019, and unites 207 upscale apartments, two theaters and more into one 23-story building. Construction on the $172 million high rise, located about 40 miles south of Manhattan, began in 2017.

Putting together the financial jigsaw puzzle to fund the project began in 2010.

“We wanted to build an arts center that had no debt, and we had to do some unique things to do that,” said Christopher Paladino, President of the New Brunswick Development Corporation, which spearheaded the project.

Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, the marquee attractions for New Jersey residents are the 463-seat Elizabeth Ross Johnson Theater and the 252-seat Arthur Laurents Theater. The vibes from each theater are quite different – the larger theater is more striking, while the smaller is more quaint – but both allow the building owner to bring first-rate shows to town.

The 5,400-square-foot lobby adds an inviting area for patrons and passersby, and three rehearsal rooms that replicate the stages allow for incoming shows to quickly set up in their new surroundings.

The spaces can also be used for general classes, workshops, and small public performances. Four member companies, including the Mason Gross School of the Arts from nearby Rutgers University, call the NBPAC home.

The apartments include studios, 1-bed, 1-bath, and 2-bed, 2-bath units. The units come with appliances, panoramic views of New Brunswick and tons of amenities. A rooftop pool and deck, fitness center, demonstration kitchen, karaoke room and residents lounge are among the features that modern-day apartment dwellers crave.

Atop the building are eight acoustical smoke vents manufactured

by The BILCO Company. The vents guard against noise intrusion while providing the security of automatic smoke venting. In 2020, BILCO unveiled a new acoustical smoke vent that offers an OITC-46 sound rating and an STC-50 sound rating. Both figures are the highest in the industry.

Two of the vents are 5-feet x 10-feet, and the others were 5-feet, 6-inches by 12-feet. Eliot Serebrenik of Fontana Metal Sales in New York City secured the smoke vents, which allow for the escape of smoke, heat, and gases in a burning building.

The vents include a positive hold/release mechanism that ensures reliable operation when a fire occurs. It also automatically releases vent covers upon the melting of a 165o F (74o C) fusible link.

“We were familiar with the manufacturer from previous projects and they offered the most advantageous sizes,” said Andrew Goetze, AIA, Project Manager for Elkus Manfredi Architects.

“The fire code stipulates a certain percentage of the stage area to be properly vented and BILCO had sizes that fit the bill.”

The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted shows just six months after the NBPAC opened. The show will go on, eventually, and Paladino promises a unique experience for visitors.

“The experienced theatergoers will see that the level of comfort, the sound, and the sightlines create an experience that is second to none,” he said.

space for two additional miles of aircraft taxi lanes.

“Previously, the biggest complaint from passengers was about being stuck in the taxi queue of aircraft waiting for a departure time. This design allows for island concourses and dual taxi lanes, greatly improving overall airside efficiency,” relates Auguste.

Subsequently, the bridges enabled the contractors to build over the top of the existing terminal, which significantly shortened the construction timeline and minimized the impact on ongoing airport operations.

In addition to the pedestrian bridges, sense of place is further emphasized with local trees,

colors and materials. “The architecture is inspired by the boroughs like Queens—silver and black granite— and the Bronx—sandstone, black glass and metal details,” Auguste explains. “The centrally located areas include an interactive play area for children and planters with trees native to New York such as White Oak, Red Oak, Maple, Birch and Sweet Gum. Passenger security check points are designed with additional future capacity and oversized holdrooms support passenger’s ability to spread out.

Electronic kiosks offer contactless check-in and the terminal is equipped with anti-bacterial sanitizing stations in multiple locations.

THE NEW TERMINALS

Replacing its inefficient and outdated Terminal B from 1964, New York’s LaGuardia Airport recently unveiled seven new gates from its Western Concourse comprising four floors over 250,000 sq. ft. Part of a larger $8 million redevelopment project, the HOK/Skanska USA/WSP USA team is slated to add an additional 10 gates by 2022.

Featuring an indoor park with benches, landscaping, 55-ft, ceiling spans, floor-to-ceiling windows and a variety of sustainable design features including a rooftop solar thermal system, rainwater collection storage and indoor water use reduction, the concourse is on track to become the first LEED Gold V 4 Terminal in the country.

Harking back to the early 1930s when LaGuardia, then called the New York Municipal Airport, served as a leisure destination for New Yorkers simply coming to watch the planes take off, HOK’s design pays homage to “the city of islands and bridges” with elevated 450-ft.-long steel truss pedestrian bridges offering panoramic views of the city.

“One of the most iconic and memorable elements of the new Terminal B are the pedestrian bridges.

Passengers can experience breathtaking views of both the Manhattan Skyline and the East River while a Boeing 737 taxis underneath them,” explains New York-based Paul Auguste, , , co-director of HOK’s Aviation + Transportation practice.

In moving the terminal building 600 ft. closer to the Grand Central Parkway, this enabled an approximately 500-ft. expansion of the airfield and

Salt Lake City Replacing three aging 1950s and 1960s terminals and concourses with one state-of-the-art facility, Salt Lake City unveiled its new central terminal building and 45 new gates along Concourse A and B in the first of a two-phased overhaul.

Capturing the beauty of the city’s slot canyons, the architectural highlight is a 362-ft.-long, wavy sculpture flanking the hall leading passengers from the checkpoint into the retail plaza area. Designed by artist Gordon Huether, the sculpture—made of more than 520 tensile membrane “fins” that define the walls—portrays Utah’s beauty in the form of red rock canyons, alpine peaks, moving water and cottony clouds. Also designed by HOK, floor-to-ceiling showcase expansive views of the airfield and Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges, and glass and earthtoned interior and exterior finishes connect passengers to the landscape.

Targeting LEED Gold, sustainable strategies include the use of both displaced air ventilation and a heating/cooling floor slab in large public areas.

“Start-stop” motors in the baggage system allow sections of the seven miles of bag belts to turn off when no bags are on them. Conforming to the times, “generous queuing space in both the ticket hall and security checkpoint offers plenty of room for social distancing,” reports Matt Leedham, ,  , codirector of HOK’s Aviation + Transportation practice.

“Generously-sized restrooms have touchless fixtures and equipment, as well as a two-bank layout that allows for social distancing.”

Taking advantage of the current reduced gate demand, the project team has moved forward with the second phase, which will ultimately add another 33 gates.

The Big Easy As the fifth fastest growing airport in the U.S., the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport unveiled its seven-year, 35-gate, $1 billion terminal in late 2019. Designed by LEO A DALY and Atkins Global, former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu described the terminal as “the most transformative project for New Orleans since the Superdome.”

Loosely replicating the city’s tree-shaded Urban markets, large skylights in the three-story space bring in patches of daylighting next to a large locally photographed image of oak trees in the morning fog.

Reminiscent of the city’s winding streets, the curving glass walls and skylights are asymmetric.

Built in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a detailed wind study involved a scale model of the terminal which was tested in a wind tunnel, explains Daniel Taylor, , , senior architect, Aviation, MSY project director, Atkins Global, New Orleans.

“The model had thousands of wind pressure sensors and was subjected to winds that replicated what real-life hurricane wind forces would be. We used those pressures in the design of the structure, the cladding and glazing system to make sure all of those systems were hurricane resistant.” The final design took on a spherical roof shape which allows for long spans while accommodating heavy rainfall.

The terminal’s vast volume has made it conducive to social distancing. “The concessions were designed as open and porous, allowing for passengers to disperse through the terminal thus eliminating crowded gates, which is a key concept in good airport COVID-prevention practices,” says Taylor.

Further, HEPA and UV filters enhance the mechanical system design and filter 98% of viruses passing through. The bathrooms feature touchless faucets, soap and automatic toilet seat covers.

On the Boards The largest infrastructure project in Kansas City’s history, construction of a new SOM-designed 39-gate terminal and 6,300-space parking structure is well underway. Embracing its “sense of place,” the terminal is incorporating wood ceilings, stone walls and fountains honoring the use of stone at the grand fountain at the city’s iconic Union Station. The design also includes fountains and an interactive display telling the history of Kansas City and the airport site.

Replacing the 1972 terminal, the one million sq.ft. building, with the capacity to expand to 50 gates, is targeting LEED Gold certification with extensive use of natural light, a maximized window-to-wall ratio and the use of natural materials.

Eloquently relating the architectural journey travelers will embark upon, SOM relates, “at the entrance, a generous overhang, supported by structurally expressed Y columns, and glass façade will create a grand and transparent space, while the retail spaces and two concourses will step down toward a human scale. The rhythmic, expressed steel structural system is balanced by a natural wood inlay to provide warmth and inviting spaces for passengers.”

Combining three existing terminals into a single H-shaped terminal structure, the project is on track to open in the spring of 2023.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles International Airport is rebuilding Terminals 2 and 3 into one terminal called the Sky Way. Due to the drop in travel, Hensel Phelps is 18 months ahead of schedule with an expected completion by late 2022/early 2023. Elsewhere at LAX, Terminals 4 and 5 are undergoing an upgrade, Terminals 1 and 2 are being connected, a new Midfield Satellite Concourse is close to completion and a new automated people mover will ultimately connect the terminals with the Los Angeles Metro light rail currently under construction.

Nashville International Airport opened six new gates while a new Fentress Architects-designed central terminal is on track for completion by 2023.

CONVEYANCE

Moving Down Under Currently installing the longest moving walks ever manufactured by the company, two 300-ft.

ThyssenKrupp iwalks will link an elevated scenic Skybridge from Australia’s Perth Airport to a new train station being constructed. Another two 124-ft. skywalks are also being installed. “Right from the start and due to the iwalk’s shallow pit for the hovering slimline bridge, we identified it as an appropriate solution

to providing an aesthetic benefit to the customer,” says Peter Walker, , ThyssenKrupp.

Just above the expanded TSA screening checkpoint, 4,400 sq. ft. of Rockfon Planar Plus 4-in. aluminum linear ceilings with perforations and an acoustical

backer offer a high Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating of up to 0.90 for enhanced speech privacy and reduced stress, and allows travelers to hear announcements.

The visible surface of the linear metal panels were finished in satin silver to emphasize the terminal’s modern look.

CWG Architecture and PSH+, the interior designers, also specified 1100 sq.

ft. of Rockfon Curvgrid 2-ft. × 6-ft. panels which arches and undulates as a two-directional wave.

Near the gates, Rockfon Spanair Torsion Spring 2-ft. × 8-ft. aluminum panels were selected for their crisp aesthetic and easy plenum access.

For Yuks: Ha-Ha’s and Goat Yoga Desire for biophilia grows, as the indoor/ outdoor trend gains in popularity, not the least the openings that bridge buildings.

The other day, driving through an unincorporated part of town (I live in deep suburbia), I saw a sign for something kind of crazy that just made me smile: ”Goat yoga available here.” It inspired an idea for a good friend, who is a local florist, whose business, even prior to the pandemic, has been tough. I suggested he might want to bring goats into the act—What? Being extremely stir crazy of late, nutty ideas are at the fore; in this case, I thought people could schedule a “rent a goat,” for yoga, sustainable lawn mowing—or whatever—

I saw a sign for something kind of crazy that just made me smile: “Goat yoga available here.” and my friend could offer a package with flowers.

The brilliant part is that the goat, likely, would eat the flowers, thus a need to order new ones—LOL— told you I’m going crazy.

On the subject of keeping goats at bay, in reading a more contemporary English countryside-set murder mystery, I came across an unusual word that had me running for the dictionary: “Ha Ha.” Basically, a half ditch/wall to keep animals from destroying gardens, the great estates of Europe employed these landscaping elements brilliantly. The wall, frequently, was submerged opposite the ditch, meaning from a distance it was invisible, thus not marring the landscape of the home, while allowing sheep or deer to keep the non-garden part of the estate from looking shaggy.

As the indoor/outdoor trend continues to wax, appearances matter—not the least the openings bridging our buildings, and the desire for the biophilic. The following are some doorrelated products that might prove useful.

ADVANCED COLOR MATCHING Amidst construction of the 61-story One Dalton Place, part hotel/part upscale residences in Boston, the company contracted to coat the façade was dismissed for failure to meet the demands of the project. This left the bottom hotel portion of the façade without coating and the need to match a new powder coating with the already liquid coated residential suites on the upper floors. Furthermore, the size and number of metal building components used in the curtainwall introduced an additional difficulty in matching the colors. Rising to the challenge, PPG retinted the colors created by the original applicator and then applied Duranar XL coatings, which were selected for its ability to retain color and gloss, and to resist corrosion from the Boston Bay. In 2016, the school district’s residents endorsed a bond measure to carry out a number of construction projects with the intent of implementing significant changes for their school system. This involved converting the former site of the LanYair Country Club into a new state-of-the-art Spartanburg High School that combined elements of both traditional and contemporary design. The campus would surround students with timeless reminders of the school’s historic past while also allowing them to benefit from modern design concepts that promote 21st century teaching and learning.

INFLUENCE: The facility’s 2,500 capacity interior incorporating large class-

rooms and a dining hall among other updates required durable, safe flooring solutions that prioritized safety and comfort.

Stain resistance was also a priority in the school’s science lab areas to accommodate rigorous cleaning and potential spills.

This lead to a collaboration between MPS and the regional Altro sales representative.

Spartanburg’s expansion also featured Altro Aquarius in the school’s new restrooms. This safety flooring range provides lasting performance in both wet and dry environments, offering optimum slip resistance.

For the school science labs where chemical staining and constant cleaning were inevitable, the flooring would need to be inherently stain-resistant—one of Altro Operetta’s specialties.

United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, Colorado Springs Chronicling the journey of the best U.S. athletes with cutting-edge technology, including sports simulations where visitors get to experience being an Olympian, the 60,000-sq.-ft. U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum, which opened in 2020, is located at the edge of downtown Colorado Springs, also known as Olympic City.

Called “a museum of hopes and dreams,” the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum provides athletes and fans alike with a space to celebrate the best values Team USA athletes embody.

The facility, designed by New York-based Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), includes 20,000 sq. ft. of galleries, theater, event space and a café. At the center of the museum’s ethos is accessibility and universal design, which guided the architectural development of the space. From entrance to exit, all visitors follow the same path through the museum, beginning with an elevator ride to the entrance and then moving down gentle, extra-wide ramps to visit the 12 galleries. In a stunning statement, there isn’t a single stair in the whole complex. Far exceeding ADA requirements, the museum may just be one of the most accessible facilities in the world.

Tasked with constructing the museum’s exterior, MG McGrath, sought to create a skin that matched architecture firm Diller, Scofidio + Renfro’s vision of a building structure and overall exterior visual effect that encapsulated the passion, dedication, and endurance of an Olympic athlete in perpetual motion. To achieve this, a system of custom metal panels with integrated gutters will wrap the doublecurved geometry of the façade. Lorin anodized aluminum panels will cover exterior walls, low-slope walls and roof, and the interior vestibule ceiling.

Exterior Panels Lorin anodized aluminum panels, ultimately, were selected over stainless steel for their durability, low cost, malleability, environmentally friendly qualities and uniform finish.

To reflect that vision of Olympic athletes in perpetual motion, a system of custom anodized aluminum panels, with integrated gutters, from Lorin, wrap the double-curved geometry of the façade. Anodized aluminum is up to two-thirds lighter than other metals, such as stainless steel, which was originally considered. Less weight means less material is required for any given application, so the supporting structure no longer needs to be as expensive to hold up the anodized aluminum. The clear anodized finish, on the 8,500 unique panels, ensures the skin retains its characteristic metallic quality.

Such a finish provides directionality to the panel surface, aiding the illusion of a body poised to pounce like a discus thrower moments before releasing the disk.

team turned its broad experience in the design of high-end hospitality venues to create an office workplace that reflects the artist/producer’s style and leadership status in its market.

Beers’ conversations with the team guided his three-dimensional translations of their artistic viewpoints and functional requirements.

Founder Jay-Z’s renowned collection of major contemporary works of two-and three-dimensional works of art, the space is a custom fit to support the work of the company as a whole and the various responsibility levels of its employees.

“We’re hoping to affect what’s going on,” said

Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez. By bringing Beers in to interpret Roc Nation’s “bold, and creative client culture,” according to Perez, was a natural fit.

The company’s growth prompted the decision to lease four floors of a recently constructed commercial building in Manhattan’s West Side

Chelsea section. It took on 29,000 sq. ft. of interior space and an expansive 9,000 sq.-ft. terrace.

The size of its outdoor space is a real find in the densely built-up Chelsea section of the city.

Since its founding in 2008 by rapper and entrepreneur, Jay-Z, Roc Nation has grown into one of the world’s

preeminent entertainment companies.

The firm works with the top players who drive today’s modern entertainment—artists, producers, songwriters and performers, supporting its talent clientele with artist management, music publishing, touring, production and strategic brand development.

Design Styles Roc Nation retained Jeffrey Beers, a leading practitioner of creating luxurious hospitality destinations that reflect the client’s operating strategy in an elevated aura of distinctive surroundings. The two firms had worked together previously, so matching the working styles came easily.

Manhattan-based designer Beers, whose chronicle of completed projects includes resort destinations, stylish urban hotels and luxury residences, took on the Roc Nation assignment as an opportunity to interpret his signature style to create a functioning office for a staff of 450 that is a dimensional portrait of the company. “This is an amazing building with incredible bones,” Beers says of the nine-story, LEED Silver–certified building that Morris Adjmi Architects completed in 2018 in the heart of Chelsea’s gallery district. “I envisioned a real downtown New York feel, but one that’s warm and residential, too,” he points out. “Not to mention to impart a galleryesque feel, since Jay owns an extraordinary contemporary art collection.”

The executive offices are customized to reflect the occupant’s personality. “Desiree’s exudes competence and elegance,” Beers explains of the CEO’s office suite. “It gives off an air of power.” The suite of Juan Perez, president of Roc’s sports division, “has a relaxed and laid-back personality,” which is “a social space.” Work spaces are mostly private offices; Beers specified an Italian storefront system of black anodized steel with glazing flush, which echo the building’s façade of factory-sash windows in a black aluminum grid. Furnishings include classic midcentury residential-scale examples: George Nelson benches, Eero Saarinen chairs, Antenna desks.

One of the most impressive spaces at Roc Nation is the social media room, with a wall of monitors and faux leather paneling, plus built-in seating and individual sofas. It was designed to feel like a “world within a world” according to designer Beers. Encased in a white plaster sphere, it is covered in charcoal leather-like paneling, with gray carpet and a gray-painted ceiling. The one flat wall is essentially a floor-to-ceiling bank of screens displaying relevant content. With its sphere-shape, the space is customizable according to need, and can function as a workspace or theater. The Paper Planes logo shows up all over, such as the coffee table.

CHALLENGE

The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District is imbued with the true history of Texas’ famous livestock industry. The Marriott’s Springhill Suites now stands as a Western-themed gateway to the district and all the activities that have made the area a favorite destination for visitors and locals seeking an authentic Texas experience. Every component of the customized build was carefully selected for authenticity and quality.

INFLUENCE

Andres Rubio, architect and principal with Niles Bolton Associates, recalled the process involved in designing the hotel for the historic district. “Local ordinances were being rezoned, so we worked closely with the city to deliver expectations both to the community and the client. Since day one, we knew it was demanding from a design perspective—not a typical cookie cutter hotel—a custom design that would blend into the local aesthetic,” says Rubio.

PRESERVING HISTORY

Efforts were made to preserve the historic ambience of the Stockyard District, and the versatility of the wall system allowed the brick aesthetic to blend in with the Stockyard area.

SOLUTION

Rubio noted, “Durability was particularly important because of the high standards of the design. We chose Echelon’s EnduraMax Wall System as the best fit for our needs. We knew that we needed flexibility, so we could design the details. The structural system needed to be a lightweight envelope that was best achieved with the use of EnduraMax. We had an ease of installation plus continuous insulation. The system provided the workers with polystyrene panels that acted as placement guide for the brick, eliminating the need for two masonry crews.”

He continued, “We did field demos and wall mockups with the EnduraMax System and found it could create a custom design that allowed the building to complement the Stockyard aesthetic. Our matrix spread sheet made it easier for the mason to lay out. We tested on a 10 × 12 span of brick in our layout. It was apparent that it was a great idea offering a lightweight easy-to-use option that would hold up over time.”

Echelon’s thinner, lightweight product helped with construction material costs and labor. The all-in-one process began with installation of the framework of pocketed pre-molded EPS insulation panels that attached directly to the structure’s framing with

stainless steel anchors and fasteners. Each panel was designed with integrated drainage channels to eliminate moisture. The brick masonry units allowed for the genuine look of brick without requiring the structural steel of a conventional masonry system.

Rubio explained, “We started with a standard blend and then examined the historic Stockyard patterns and tones that were in the area, so we knew we wanted that look. We found the best field color to match the area and added some other colors that could be a rich blend and be seen from a distance.”

Due to its flexibility, the wall system created a transition from hotel interior to the rooftop bar that gave it an authentic, seamless flow.

Color and Protection Highlight New Charter School The Bronx’s Grand Concourse Academy Charter School found the right mix that helped the school stand out in the neighborhood— becoming a bright, engaging, inviting place—and stand up to the elements as well.

CHALLENGE

Lubrano Ciavarra Architects (LCA) saw two great challenges when they set about designing Grand Concourse Academy Charter School. One, they needed to make the school stand out amid the sea of red brick that pervades the Bronx neighborhood.

And two, they had to design a building that would stand up to the elements—wind, rain, snow and, of course, kids being kids.

SOLUTION

The solution to both challenges was StoTherm ci Lotusan. “Color was very important because it was a school,” said Joshua Barkan of Lubrano Ciavarra when describing why they chose StoTherm ci Lotusan. According to Barkan, the design, which incorporated vertical bands of contrasting colors, was inspired by a box of crayons.

To create this signature, multi-hued, multi-panel look, Masucci Construction used a trowel, a roller, the complete StoTherm ci Lotusan system, and a little creativity. As with all Sto continuous insulation wall systems, it started with StoGuard air and moisture barrier under the cladding.

Next, to create the look of distinct panels, vertical channels were cut in the foam. And after a white base coat, Stolit Lotusan finish was troweled on using the StoSignature Stone application technique to create a stone texture, adding, in Barkan’s words, “additional depth and interest to the façade.” StoColor Lotusan coating in distinct colors was rolled on each individual “panel” to create the “box of crayons” look.

Excited children bring the second great challenge: durability. It being a school, children will be playing.

And children playing create havoc. The walls had to be able to withstand wayward basketballs, errant baseballs and other unforeseen student misadventures.

In areas where heavy wear or potential impacts were expected, Armor Mat Mesh was added between the base coat and the smooth Stolit Lotusan finish.

The ultra-high impact, double-strand, interwoven, open-weave glass-fiber fabric is an option within the StoTherm ci system that provides extra impact resistance. It’s a popular option in hurricane and tornado prone areas or in situations that will encounter similar destructive forces, such as kids having fun.

Lubrano Ciavarra Architects also wanted to ensure that the signature colors could stand the test of time with minimal maintenance. “The self-cleaning properties will keep the colors vibrant,” said Barkan.

However, the crew still struggled with aligning the Ipe boards using pipe clamps and board-straightening tools which called for several workers. Traditional straightening tools were making it nearly impossible to simultaneously fasten the deck boards.

INFLUENCE

Behan Bros. coordinated multiple aspects of the Newport Wharf expansion, including construction of a 20,000-sq.-ft. tropical hardwood “Ipe” horseshoe-shaped deck connected to the hotel, which will provide guests and pedestrians with sweeping views of the harbor. The resilient low-maintenance decking is three times denser than cedar, ideal for constant foot traffic and boasts similar fire ratings to concrete—but it’s not the easiest material to manipulate.

SOLUTION

As they worked to install the sturdy decking, Behan Bros. encountered some hurdles. “When you have a remarkably dense wood that’s hard enough to blunt sawblades and shatter drill bits, the installation of Ipe decking requires strong tools and careful consideration,” explained Garrett Behan, co-owner. Another challenge for workers was the tendency of the Ipe boards to twist and dry out quickly. “Aligning and maneuvering deck boards into position with tradi-

With only several weeks remaining until the scheduled completion of Hammetts Wharf, Behan Bros. heard about a brand-new innovation from CAMO’s Greg Hartmann, called the Lever—and were able to acquire several tools practically hot off the press before the official introduction.

Designed to save time and increase installation speed using just one or two workers, Camo Lever straightens, bends and aligns while you fasten with no strain. Other wrenches and clamps do not allow space for fastening simultaneously. With almost no set-up time and one-turn operation, LEVER easily locked the deck boards into place and was an immediate hit on the Hammetts Wharf jobsite.

Equipped with the CAMO PRO Guide and LEVER, the Behan Bros. crew was able to speed up the deck installation, finishing the massive deck by mid-April.

Enhancing the ‘Campus Living Room’ KWK Architects, partnering with CannonDesign, has completed a 15- to 20-year renovation masterplan for the University of Central Missouri’s Elliott Student Union, a 165,000-sq.-ft. social hub affectionately known as the “campus living room.”

CHALLENGE

CRITERIA

Most recently, KWK completed design and construction administration for implementing Phase 1 of the masterplan, which included a redesigned, modern main entrance and a new 280-seat multi-purpose auditorium addition. The total construction cost of Phase I was approximately $7 million. The new entrance was completed in fall 2019, while the new auditorium was completed in spring 2020.

After the masterplan was completed, the team provided the university with a magnitude of cost for each phase of the renovation. The goal was to update the central atrium as the primary student area, transform underutilized spaces, support the evolution of student services and improve overall visitor experience.

The planning team worked closely with university leadership, students and staff to define a 15- to 20-year vision for renovating the facility, which also houses a bowling alley, several retail dining options, a cinema, university offices, a bank, student programming spaces, ballrooms and meeting spaces.

INVITING LOOK

The entrance and hallway were designed to be functional and inviting with comfortable seating and modern design elements, which include wood accents and gray-toned flooring.

“The team analyzed existing conditions and held multiple workshops, meetings and a town hall to gain stakeholder input,” said KWK Principal Eric Neuner, . “We explored various design options to best meet the university’s vision for how the facility would look and feel and how its space would best be utilized.”

To create the new entrance, the design team shifted the south entrance to the west to create a hallway between the existing bowling center and a Steak‘n Shake restaurant, which were also given access points within the new corridor. The former entry

had also served as the entrance to the bowling alley, which created confusion for visitors not familiar with the campus or the building. The new entrance area also includes seating, a graphic wall timeline, entry signage and a wayfinding kiosk.

SOLUTION

“The new entrance and hallway were designed to be functional as well as inviting with its comfortable seating and modern design elements, which include wood accents, gray-toned flooring and the university’s signature red color featured throughout,” said Andy Noll, , project manager at KWK. The 5,700-sq.-ft. auditorium addition, one of the highlights of the renovation, was designed with a stage and retractable seating so that the facility could be used for a variety of student and community events, such as wedding receptions, reunions and special gatherings. The entrance to the auditorium is also accessible through the new entrance hallway.

“The first-phase auditorium addition was directed towards student recruitment, providing a large, flexible space that introduced students to the university,” said Neuner. “Additionally, it was critical that the design address a connection between the new auditorium and the main visitor entry to Elliot Student Union,” said Neuner.

Mesh Screens Underline Exclusivity of Qatar Airport Hamad International Airport places emphasis on extraordinary design, maximum efficiency when handling passengers and freight, and a luxurious atmosphere and sustainability.

CHALLENGE

The Hamad International Airport (HIA) in the capital city Doha, Qatar, is open for passengers after a decade of pioneering design, engineering and construction work. Once all work has been completed, up to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million metric tons of freight will be processed every year. The strategically important location between East and West makes it an important international hub.

In order to convey the country’s culture, which is equally oriented towards the future and tradition, the airport places emphasis on an extraordinary design, a luxurious atmosphere and sustainability. The sophisticated concept of San Francisco’s HOK is underlined in the main hall of the duty-free area and in Hall C of the main terminal by four large-scale screens.

INFLUENCE

As part of the National Vision 2030, Hamad International Airport is an important factor driving the development of the state’s new self-image.

SOLUTION

Four large-scale GKD Mediamesh screens—made of stainless steel fabric with integrated LED profiles— were used. Manufactured from Tigris stainless steel fabric with integrated LED profiles, they impress with their intricate transparency, high-quality appearance and invisible cabling.

Each made up of six seamlessly joined fabric panels; the transparent displays flank the main hall, high over the heads the airport visitors. With six bright LEDs per pixel, the screens guarantee brilliant image quality across their entire length of 73.5 ft. and height of 38.7 ft., even when the hall is flooded by daylight.

However, the outstanding design and excellent function were not the sole focus for the planners from HOK: environmental friendliness was also a key factor when selecting all materials and solutions employed in order to keep the ecological footprint of the overall system as small as possible. With significantly lower power consumption than conventional displays, the Mediamesh screens make a significant contribution to this. Alongside energy efficiency, the low-maintenance system is also sustainable with regard to the material used, as the stainless steel fabric is fully recyclable at the end of its service life.

Landscape Products

Park Transformation Creates Sense of Discovery From a public landfill in the mid-1800s to a world-class public park in a Midwestern city of 100,000, South Bend, Indiana’s Howard Park has become the city’s marquee park.

CHALLENGE

The park has undergone several iterations since its opening in 1899, but over the decades had fallen into disrepair. The park grounds and community center were aging and underused, and the ice rink no longer operational. That all changed in November 2019 when the community celebrated Howard Park’s transformation. Alliance Architects was selected to design the 13-acre park. Alliance Architects’ Bill Lamie, , the principal leading the project, tapped Landscape Architect Kevin Clark, from The Lakota Group, to collaborate on the park design.

INFLUENCE

“The master plan was to bring back ice skating to the park in a new way,” says Lamie. “Instead of a large ice rink, we designed an interesting ice trail that contains the playground area. People enter the playground under the bridge that features rotating, colored lights.

The forms, colors and landscaping that buffer the ice trail and playground become sculptural elements that blend together.”

The St. Joseph River informed the designers’ concept for the landscape architecture, which built on the idea of a flowing river. “The landscape has movement with grade changes and winding trails. The blue and green palette and stone buildings and outcroppings create an organic feel,” says Clark.

SOLUTION

The design of the Landscape Forms lighting and site furnishings reinforced the organic, sculptural characteristics of the park’s buildings, hardscape and greenscape. The park is on track to become the area’s first LEED v4-certified public park and incorporates ecological design and material choices throughout.

FGP area lights and Torres area, wall-mounted and catenary lights were chosen for their contemporary aesthetic, which Clark describes as “timeless and interesting.” The FGP area lights are located along the perimeter of the park, pathways and ice trail. The family of Torres fixtures aesthetically connect elements from taller area lights around the ice pond to smaller scale, wall-mounted fixtures on the community center and other buildings.

The plaza area features Escofet’s Twig and Lungo Mare benches, FGP benches and Stop Bollards. “Visitors comment on the sculptural nature of Lungo Mare seating and Twig benches,” says Lamie. They reinforce and complement the consistency of Howard Park’s design. All of the elements work well together and that’s the strength of the final result.”

Durable and Attractive Metal Accents Regional HQ A 200,000-sq.-ft., three-story building houses the new regional headquarters for Geico in Tucson, Ariz.

CHALLENGE

SOLUTION

It occupies 20 acres of land, and includes modern workspaces, an onsite cafeteria, fitness center, credit union, and 20,000 sq. ft. of patios and outdoor space for associates to use during breaks. The building is located in The Bridges, which includes a 65-acre tech park, 112 acres of retail development and 175 acres of residential development. It is poised to be one of the most desirable employment hubs in Tucson, Ariz.

ATAS International’s Belvedere 6-in. Short Rib solid and perforated panels in clear satin anodized aluminum were used on portions of the walls, along with solid panels in a custom blue color. For the stairwells, custom perforated ATAS panels in clear satin anodized aluminum were installed. The metal panels accented the concrete tilt-up panels, of which the building was constructed.

Belvedere 6-in. Short Rib wall panels are structural in nature and can be installed either on solid substrate or open framing. It is a 1.5-in. deep ribbed panel that features six broad low and six narrow high cells. This panel can be installed horizontally and vertically with exposed fasteners. They are manufactured in 0.032, 0.040 and 0.050 aluminum, as well as in 24, 22, or 20-gauge metallic coated steel or 55% Al-Zn alloy coated steel with acrylic coating.

The Belvedere 6-in. Short Rib panels provide a rugged, urban-industrial aesthetic. They are easily installed and the long-lasting, high-performance fasteners and accessories in matching colors are made to resist weathering and deterioration.

Randall Paine, procurement manager for J.B. Steel, the installer of the stairway panels, stated, “For this particular project, the design and pattern for the perforated aluminum panels was specified by the architect. Since our expertise is in steel and not aluminum, we relied heavily on ATAS to help us design and detail the perforated panels in both a functional and aesthetically pleasing manner. We believe this was achieved on this project through close cooperation between the design team, the Renaissance Co., ATAS and J.B. Steel. We would like to give a special thanks to David Jarrett, the ATAS product rep, for his commitment to working with J.B. Steel to help address issues and questions that developed during the project.”

Approximately 230 perforated stairwell panels in over 40 different perforation patterns were manufactured

by ATAS.

Tackling Today’s Crises

Daniel Hart, , executive vice president of Architecture at Parkhill in Austin, Texas, is currently the first vice president of  national and the president-elect for 2022.

AIA President Elect shines a lens on architects’ role in battling COVID-19, climate change and social injustice.

While the country simultaneously battles three crises—COVID19, climate change and social justice—there is a remarkable parallel with the three main pillars of the classic architect’s social contract to be stewards of health, safety and well-being of the built environment.

“COVID is health; social justice is really about social safety; and climate is about wellbeing,” he states. This idea effectively brings these crises “from a high altitude down to the responsibility of architects.”

By optimally designing buildings and socially accessible spaces in a sustainable and healthconscious manner, architects are in an ideal position to make an impact. “Architectural expertise and high performance building design is what drives our value, it’s our super power, and happens to be really good for society, too.”

architectural engineering at his alma mater Texas Tech University, Hart is no stranger to leadership roles. He has also served on a number of AIA committees, most recently co-chairing the AIA COVID-19 Business Task Force.

With a focus on business resilience and helping firms succeed during the downturn, one initiative under Hart was creating the “Five Steps to Thrive” primer. The guide takes a client-based approach with a focus on setting up clients with projects that are ready to go, “so that when some of the restrictions of the pandemic are/were lifted, it would position our clients to realize economies to be first in line with projects ready to go.”

Bringing back community to architects’ role, he points out that

architecture is local to the places where we are. “That is why it is so fundamentally important that while the work we do is connected to global challenges, to the wider world, we change the world by the work we do in our corner of it. The work that we do, community by community, remains of upmost importance.”

Hard times can knock us out of our complacency. “There is certainly a great deal of pain that all of this is causing, but it is helping us learn about who we are, what our role is and what can be done to make things better.

I hope we are learning those lessons.”
