With consumers becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of homes designed around well-being and sustainability, it’s more important than ever for integrators, designers, and architects to work together to bring their dream homes to life.
Kyle Steele, president, Global Wave Integration; Amy Creager, architect, AIA, BJA; and Laura Brophy, principal, Laura Brophy Interiors, joined moderator Cecilia Ramos, senior director, architectural market, Lutron, for a discussion, “Designing for Wellbeing and Sustainability: CEDIA Expo Closing Keynote presented by Lutron,” on Friday morning. The panel shared key insights and examples of how collaborating earlier can provide the best possible design solutions for clients.
“We are living longer, but we’re not living health-
ier,” said Steele. “The built environment is just not healthy, but technology could greatly affect that.”
“We’re seeing the use of lighting control and different types of lights in hotels and other large spaces, a lot of linear lighting, glowing toe kicks for safety— and all of these things translate back and forth to home,” added Creager. “And more people are asking for water features than before.”
Agreeing on the need for healthier homes and how crucial design, building, and integration are to promoting healthy lifestyles, the discussion turned to the need for integrators to get involved earlier in the process. “The ‘AV guy’ is always an afterthought, and you don’t want to be pigeonholed as a subcontractor—you want to be part of the design team,” said Steele. “Everything we do touches every trade; we want to be part of that conversation. If
you speak up and start asking the right questions about lighting and sound, you will get brought in early.”
“I believe all the integrators have such a big job to get out there and not make it salesy, and to work with the entire team,” Brophy noted. “Don’t just be in your corner! It really takes all of us to make the home this great environment, and having you come in and meet us and want to be a part of it and help educate is really exciting. I’m excited to see that happening more than it ever has.”
The panelists also commented on how important it is to listen to the client’s needs and to seek out others on the project’s design team, rather than just waiting for them to approach. “It’s really important to take your time with the client,” said Brophy. “This isn’t just a sales tactic, it’s our future.”

“Imagine a young girl, all her grandparents are from Mexico, her mom is born in Mexico, and the family struggled with money. Eleven people, one bathroom.”
That was the starting point for Sylvia Acevedo, both in her life and in her keynote address for the Women in Consumer Technology’s 16th Annual CEDIA Networking Reception and Luncheon on Friday. From those humble beginnings, she would go on to serve as CEO of the Girl Scouts of America and an executive for IBM, Dell, and Apple, plus White House Education Commissioner and a rocket scientist at NASA.
Acevedo emphasized the difficult circumstances of her childhood, growing up in a household that only spoke Spanish, on a dirt road that happened to be the location of the last meningitis epidemic in the United States. How, then, did this young girl grow up to get a graduate degree from Stanford and live such a successful life?
It wasn’t until Stanford had contacted her in the mid-2000s for an interview that Acevedo looked to
her past to search for the answer. She was able to identify major inflection points that taught lessons that were key to her success. The genesis of her journey, Acevedo explained, was her childhood introduction to the organization she would one day lead. “Everything changed when I got invited to this afterschool program called the Girl Scouts,” she recalled.
To pay her way through Girl Scouts, Acevedo needed to sell cookies constantly, a task that initially seemed daunting. To help her succeed, her troop leader imparted two pieces of advice that proved invaluable. “The first: how to create opportunity. Set your goal, break it into smaller pieces, and by the time you do that, the number of cookies you have to sell each day is very manageable,” she explained. “Then she taught me the other thing: Work really hard—and when you’re feeling stuck, ask for help.”
These pieces of advice became cornerstones to how Acevedo learned to create her own opportunities. However, it was the next piece of wisdom from her troop leader, that helped propel her through her education and corporate career. “Never walk away from a sale until you hear ‘no’ three times,” she said. Learning to
ADI GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION, BOOTH 2533 Snap One is now a part of ADI, so Cheryl Hayes (left) and Christa Dahl teamed up to showcase the WattBox WB-700-IPV-12 IP power conditioner. find common ground when being told “no” the first time helped Acevedo secure a place in Stanford’s graduate program, and helped her develop the persistence needed to land positions at major tech companies. Finally, Acevedo relayed the final lesson she learned in her career that allowed her to advance: “Identify the value you add that aligns with your company’s strategy.” It’s not enough to do your job and exceed expectations, she explained. Learning to communicate the value you add to your superiors is the key to success.
SR 207 As it has in its two previous CEDIA Expo appearances, Quantum Media Systems is delivering another impressive demo, this time featuring the XDR Pro Cinema Video Wall. The 20-foot-wide Cinemascope-format XDR Pro Cinema Video Wall is complemented by a high-end surround-sound system, acoustical treatments, media servers, power management system, and control system.
The XDR Pro Cinema Video Wall features technologies such as HDMI 2.1, a 120 Hz refresh rate, 100% of the P3 color space, up to 8K resolution, and multiimage processing. It is also able to alter the dimension of its viewing surface automatically to the most appropriate format based on the content selected, be it 2.39:1 Cinemascope, 2.0:1, 1.85:1, or 16:9 4K HD. Plus, its newly established 1500-nit luminance rating, beneficial for viewing HDR content, sets a new standard for residential applications.
One of the more significant enhancements is its support of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) specification. DCI was developed initially as a performance standard for commercial cinemas—Quantum is among the first companies to extend DCI to the residential market. In addition to better imaging performance, DCI provides end-users access to first-run Hollywood films from the exclusive Bel-Air Circuit streaming service.
BOOTH 1901 The new Crestron Home OS updates introduce Room-to-Room Calling and Paging Replies, two innovative features that enhance communication within the smart home. These features provide a convenient and efficient way for family members and guests to connect with each other, regardless of their location within the home. With whole-home paging, homeowners can make announcements to specific rooms or the entire household with a single touch. Make direct calls between touch screens and enjoy real-time, two-way conversations with the person in the other room, ensuring natural and uninterrupted communication. This eliminates the need to physi-
cally search for family members or shout across the house, streamlining communication and enhancing family life.
Crestron Home OS 4 also introduces user management capabilities with improved lock integration access. This powerful feature empowers users to grant and manage access to specific locks for individual users, providing a more personalized and secure experience. Users can control and restrict access to specific locks for individual users, ensuring that only authorized individuals can enter the home. To ensure further security, PIN code protection on touch screens is now available.

Arlen Schweiger of CE Pro kicked off the CEDIA Expo 2024 Smart Stage sessions Thursday morning by moderating a panel of industry experts who shared their insights into what the end of 2024 and early 2025 holds for the CI industry.
The panelists—Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO, CEDIA; Jon Robbins, executive director, HTSA; Hank Alexander, director, Oasys/Nationwide Marketing Group; Chris Whitley, executive director, Ellipsys; Jim Pearse, CEO, Prosource; and Patrick McCarthy, interim director, Azione Unlimited—candidly expressed excitement and concerns seen from a national perspective, as well as what their group members are experiencing.
So, what is the current pulse of the industry? The panelists agreed that high-end installs, particularly in the lighting and shading sectors, are in a boom, while middle markets are continuing to struggle. “Some of our members are scared, and some of them are saying they’re having the best year ever,” said McCarthy. “It’s market to market, and the back half is looking
better than the first half,”
“I believe the industry is set up for the back half of 2025 to really start to get back on track,” added Pearse.
New opportunities in sustainability, energy management, and aging in place are “ready and waiting” for businesses looking to expand or even create an additional specialized business to meet the needs of new and existing consumers.
The ever-present lack of industry awareness is of great concern, particularly for CEDIA. Friedman highlighted CEDIA’s efforts to raise awareness of the CI industry with its upcoming campaigns and government classification, as well as assets and available assistance for members to help spread the word in their markets. “There are the day-to-day struggles,” said Friedman, “but that long-term struggle of
awareness has to be solved for this industry to grow exponentially.”
Looking to the future, the panelists expect a continuation of success in the lighting and shading markets, and expressed how their groups are poised to help their members grow and succeed. “People join a group for programs, but it’s the other things they stay for,” said Alexander. “We have a wide range of members at Oasys, and communication and education are a big part of the training we offer.”
“It is now time to really get them presenting to clients the idea of high-performance home entertainment, whether cinema or music,” added Robbins. “Now is the time for us to be specifying performance entertainment.”
“AV as a service, and AI—just get ready,” advised Whitley. “Who knows what it’s going to be?”
These premium motion mounts feature IsoTILT™ technology, ensuring the TV’s tilt angle remains secure, preventing drift. With industry-leading construction, it provides effortless positioning for TVs of all sizes and weights according to your mount. Integrated cable management discreetly conceals power and HDMI cables. The magnetic pull tabs are a nice final touch which allows them to be discreetly tucked away behind your TV. The decorative wall plate covers magnetically attach, making installation easy. The mount’s design makes it easy to install the TV, especially with the trend toward larger TV sizes. www.ErgoAV.com | Booth #C708

BOOTH C1115 Last year, Skyworth USA made its debut at CEDIA Expo with an attention-getting booth that featured its Lifestyle Series of TV, focusing on its Outdoor TV. They also previewed the Canvas television, which displays artwork when not in use as a traditional TV. Based on that positive first-time experience, the company is returning to Denver ready to provide dealers with more of what intrigued them in 2023.
“Last year, we had a smaller booth and most of the products we had weren’t shipping at that time,” says Michael Gleason, director of sales, lifestyle TV at Skyworth USA. “We were just sticking our toe in the market and getting feedback. It’s a lot different this year—all our products are available and shipping now, and we want to cement our relationships with our current customers and find some new ones.
“This year we continue to focus on our lifestyle products—mainly around the launch of the Canvas Art TV. This product category is growing, and I think there’s a real opportunity in the CI channel for it. We have a unique perspective on it—ours is an all-in-one solution, so there’s not a separate box as there is with some competitors.”
Skyworth is also showing its outdoor televisions, as well as its new portable 24-inch Google TV, which has been a hit with dealers. “The 24-inch portable is a unique product,” says Gleason. “For the last year, I have been doing roadshows with these displays, and when dealers see content on it and see that there are no wires…it’s a very emotional reaction. We started selling them on the spot because everybody wants one at that moment.”
As impressed as dealers have been with Skyworth’s products, it pales in comparison to company CEO Li Fangfang’s view of the custom integration channel. “Skyworth is a $9 billion company globally,” Gleason explains. “They do business in more than 110 countries. They are number one in OLED in China, and they are the number one set-top box worldwide. But none of this business is in the U.S., and when they were looking to expand, the conventional thought was through retail.
“In the six months leading up to the CEDIA Expo last year, Fangfang didn’t really understand this market. Then he went to the show, and he was blown away by the integrators and how big of a show it was. In October, we had a meeting, and he said we are 100% in CEDIA. He wants to bring in products that are not me-too, but that can add value to this marketplace and where Skyworth can be the number one or number two share.”
BOOTH 2524 In keeping with the company’s aggressive product launches for 2024, Russound’s award-winning AVA-Series MiniAVRs are now available, along with the recent release of the D1290 multichannel amp. The AVA2.1 and AVA3.1 Mini-AVRs are problem solvers, offering plug-and-play amplification for 2.1 and 3.1 audio systems with Audio Return Channel (ARC) HDMI. Both models include a fully integrated, highly efficient Class-D amplifier with digital inputs, 100-240V 50/60Hz universal power supply for installation nearly anywhere, built-in Bluetooth 5.0, dedicated subwoofer output with gain control, and an IR remote control and external receiver.
Russound’s AVA2.1 and AVA3.1 MiniAVRs redefine the audio industry with compact designs and groundbreaking features. They streamline installations with ARC HDMI, enabling instant TV use via HDMI’s CEC functionality, eliminating the need for extra remotes. Highly flexible, they seamlessly integrate with existing soundbars or speaker setups, fitting into almost any space.

BOOTH 2533 Cynthia Menna, VPGM AV of ADI, discusses ADI’s CEDIA Expo presence and its new relationship with Snap One.
What are ADI priorities and goals in attending CEDIA Expo this year?
Cynthia Menna: CEDIA Expo is an important event for us, and we’re excited to be exhibiting again at this year’s show. With Snap One now part of ADI, we are highlighting some of the latest technologies across two booths. Attendees can visit the Snap One team at booth 1512 and ADI team at booth 2523. Our displays have been carefully curated to demonstrate how we can help customers build complete, integrated solutions, expand into new categories and services, and capitalize on the growing AV/CE market.
We are spending time with our customers and suppliers and showcasing how ADI and Snap One are better together and will deliver more value.
How is ADI’s acquisition of Snap One represented at the show?
CM: ADI and Snap One as one business brings
together the strengths and resources of both companies and allows us to enhance the products and services we offer. Snap One is highly complementary to ADI, and as a combined business will offer numerous benefits to customers.
Although we are still across two booths at this year’s show, we are showcasing some of the latest technologies that are now available across both businesses. This is one of the many customer benefits as we continue our integration path of becoming one business and one team.
What product categories will dealers experience at the ADI booth?
CM: The ADI booth includes displays around outdoor entertainment, indoor entertainment, and connected home. Visitors can also learn about the Snap One solutions now available at ADI, including WattBox, OvrC, and Control4.

Lighting professionals are always looking for ways to improve their skills, but it can be hard to know where to start. Fortunately, Andy Bull, director of design for Lighting Audio Video Projects, and David Warfel, founding designer of Light Can Help You, shared their top tools of the trade during their highly informative “Do More with Lighting and Expand Your Offerings: Lighting Experts Reveal All” educational session on Friday morning.
“If I had this presentation 11 years ago, it probably would have saved me many, many years of trying to work out what to do and from many mistakes,” Bull admitted. The duo broke down the tools into three categories, Inspiration and Education, Drawing and Design, and Numbers and Fixtures.
Tools for Inspiration and Education included Mood and Pinterest boards to help clients visualize the possibilities, as well as provide easy organization and access for client conversations. The IES Ready Reference App is a handy tool for quick lookup of recommended light levels. Blogs and podcasts cited as valuable tools included the CEDIA podcast (which hosts Bull and Warfel’s podcasts on lighting design), “The Language of Light” blog, and websites from Mariana Figueiro, Ph.D. and Dr. Shelley James that are packed with information and research on light and well-being.
On the Drawing and Design front, recommended software included Adobe Photoshop, the Sketchbook app—particularly powerful when coupled with an iPad and Apple Pencil—Bluebeam Revu, and the Lutron Luxury Experience app, which lets lighting
professionals demonstrate color technologies, warm dimming, layered lighting, and more.
To help lighting professionals with Numbers and Fixtures, Bull and Warfel recommended DIALux and RELUX along with AGi32, plus various light meters and light meter apps.
The first top recommended tool? “Open-ended questions,” Warfel revealed. “You’re trying to get some information from the client that will help you create a solution for them. Open-ended questions are the key to sales or getting the design right and getting the client convinced that yes, this is the right design— and they should pay for it. Ask questions like, ‘What
do you want to put up on your walls?’ or ‘How do you spend your time at home?’ up front, and you’ll find out what’s most important to them.”
“Let them talk!” added Bull, unveiling the second top tool for lighting professionals. “The more they talk, the easier it is. It’s just as important to listen instead of being too eager to jump right in. Let them talk, keep them talking. Open-ended questions are how to do it.”

For the second consecutive year, a significant chunk of the CEDIA Expo show floor in the Denver Convention Center has been allocated to the Commercial Integrator Expo (CIX). It’s further evidence that the line between residential and commercial projects has been crossed—or crossed out entirely, in some cases—by both integrators and manufacturers.
Jason McGraw, Emerald’s group VP and CEDIA Expo— CIX show director, has seen an increase in residential integrators expanding into light commercial work. “This trend is driven by the growing demand for integrated technology solutions bridging the gap between residential and commercial environments,” he says. “Last year, nearly 50% of CEDIA Expo attendees indicated that they engaged in some form of commercial work, and this percentage continues to grow. This trend is also reflected in CEDIA Expo itself, where more residential product manufacturers are introducing products geared toward commercial applications.”
Shannon Humphrey, president of SoundTube (booth C701), has also seen residential integrators moving into commercial work—often at the request of their residential customers. “We frequently hear that growth into commercial markets is driven from current customers asking for help with their businesses,” he explains. “The skills and products used in residential settings often translate well to small commercial environments, making it a natural progression.”
David Phelps, head of the Display Division, Samsung Electronics America (booth 3012) has certainly seen the overlap. “As residential integrators look for ways to diversify their business, they often turn to commercial work to help grow their top and bottom lines,” he says. “They often have residential clients that have business
needs for commercial solutions and position themselves as a full solution provider.”
But the reverse is also true: McGraw said there is increased interest among commercial integrators in residential projects, which he attributed to the expansion of work-from-home and hybrid office environments. “The pandemic accelerated this trend, pushing commercial integrators to adapt their expertise to meet the growing demand for residential solutions that support remote work,” he explains. “Partnering with organizations like IMCCA to bring content to CEDIA Expo and CIX has been instrumental in addressing these unified communications needs across market segments.”
At CEDIA, Samsung is highlighting its premium residential TV lineup, including The Terrace outdoor models. When it comes to product lines, Phelps said there are differences between the company’s residential and commercial displays solutions. “Samsung provides a broad range of residential and commercial displays, each designed for specific applications,” he explains.
While SoundTube has several products that cross over between the residential and commercial markets, Humphrey says residential audio solutions generally focus on aesthetics and integration with home automation systems, while offering high-quality sound tailored for personal enjoyment. Under the theme “Dante Comes Home,” SoundTube is showcasing its complete residential ecosystem of Dante-enabled products at CEDIA. Humphrey says the products—from input and source control to speakers—are suitable for both residential and professional installations.
SoundTube’s SolidDrive product line is useful for both commercial and residential installations.
