THE BEATING HEART OF THE RIVIERA MAYA

A MESSAGE FROM amfAR

Welcome to the inaugural amfAR Dallas gala. We are grateful you’ve joined us for this very special evening.

For over two and a half decades, the Dallas community has supported amfAR, enabling us to fuel groundbreaking and pioneering research that has revolutionized the fight against HIV. Your generosity has brought us closer than ever to achieving a practical, affordable, and accessible cure for the 40 million people worldwide living with the virus.

However, the impact of our research extends far beyond HIV. The scientific advancements it has driven have become a springboard for breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and new responses to viral threats like COVID-19.

Breakthroughs in areas such as CAR T-cell therapy, vaccine design, and antiviral drug development all trace their roots back to HIV research.

Building on this legacy, amfAR’s new research strategy aims to further enhance our impact.

We are investing not only in the most promising paths toward an HIV cure but also in cross-disciplinary research that unlocks lifesaving discoveries for a wide range of diseases. By serving as a catalyst for bold biomedical research, amfAR ensures that every dollar invested has a ripple effect across global health, advancing further discoveries.

Tonight, your support will enable us to build on this extraordinary momentum, accelerating discoveries that bring us closer to ending the AIDS epidemic while shaping the next generation of breakthroughs that will benefit people everywhere.

We hope you enjoy the evening and thank you for your generosity.

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and advocacy. Since 1985, amfAR has raised nearly $950 million in support of its programs and has awarded more than 3,800 grants to research teams worldwide.

CHAMPAGNE

YELLOW LABEL, VEUVE CLICQUOT

Veuve Clicquot’s signature Brut is defined by balance: Pinot Noir lends structure and intensity, Chardonnay brings elegance, and Meunier adds roundness. Blended with up to 45% reserve wines, it showcases notes of pear, apple, and peach layered with citrus and hints of brioche, delivering both freshness and richness.

WINE

RED

VIANDANTE DEL CIELO, 2020, SKYWALKER VINEYARDS

The boldest expression from Skywalker Vineyards, crafted in the spirit of great Bordeaux yet distinctly Umbrian in character. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, it reveals aromas of cigar box, blackcurrant leaf, and morello cherry. On the palate, it is spicy and earthy with vibrant fruit, muscular yet finegrained tannins, and a long, savory finish.

WHITE

CHARDONNAY, 2023, SKYWALKER VINEYARDS

From Marin County’s coastal terroir, this flagship Chardonnay is handharvested and aged 14 months in French oak. Generous aromas of lemon, lychee, and white blossom are lifted by sweet oak and briny minerality. Flavors of pineapple and citrus unfold into hazelnut, brioche, and crème brûlée, leading to a layered, elegant finish.

DAVID YARROW

Sinclair Oil, 2025

Archival pigment print, Tru Vue Optium Museum

Acrylic

1/12 from an edition of 12

Framed size: 49 in. x 84 in. / 124.46 cm. x 213.36 cm.

David Yarrow (b. 1966, Glasgow, Scotland) is recognized as one of the world’s best-selling fine-art photographers. He has found his true comfort zone in capturing the animal and human world in a fresh and creative way. A key part of his success has been creating art through partnerships with a philanthropic objective and this has enabled him to work with leading figures in sport, fashion, and Hollywood such as Cindy Crawford, John McEnroe, and Cara Delevingne. Since 2018, charitable donations from the sale of David’s images have exceeded $20 million.

Yarrow took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. His distinctive work in recent years has earned him an ever-growing following among art collectors. Yarrow is now represented by some of the top contemporary galleries around the world.

In the Autumn of 2025, Rizzoli will publish David’s fourth book, titled The Collection, featuring 150 of his best images in a curated mix of yet-to-be-published and bestselling photographs.

In early 2025, Yarrow stumbled across a 1942 Sinclair Oil ad featuring a photograph of a cowboy on a horse racing against a low-flying American Airlines Douglas DC7 and decided to create his own version at Alpine Airport in West Texas with a 1944 A-26 Invader that had been active in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Said Yarrow about the original inspiration: “Sinclair supplied American Airlines with engine lubricant and the advert was a simple play on horsepower. Like many of the commercial adverts of that period, the message leant on the contribution to the war effort. The connectivity between horse and flying machine in the image was visually arresting and told a wonderful story.”

HANNES SCHMID

COWBOY 102 (American Myth: Infinite series), 2012 Oil on canvas

56 in. x 72 in. / 120 cm. x 180 cm.

Since 2003, Hannes Schmid (b. 1946, Zurich, Switzerland) has been translating his photography into photorealistic paintings. He paints his famous Marlboro Man photographs with oil paint on canvas. Inspired by Richard Prince’s appropriation of the Marlboro advertisement images, he started painting by hand the photographs that he had shot for the Phillip Morris campaign from 1993 until advertising tobacco was outlawed.

In COWBOY 102, the cowboy’s masculine face takes center stage, illuminated by the strong side light. A cowboy on horseback in dynamic motion, pulling the reins, in strong command of his horse. The mane blows in the dark shadows, blending into the dusty background. The strong contrast in the shadows, bringing forth the red shirt on a well-chiseled face. The gloved hand grips the rein, translating the depicted scene’s inherent alliance between Man and animal. In synchronized movement, both form a loyal unity, accentuated by the dark and dusty background.

This painting was exhibited at the Kuntsmuseum Bern in Switzerland, rated among the top three museums in all of Switzerland, during March–July 2013 in the retrospective, Hannes Schmid: Real Stories.

Cowboy 102 is illustrated in color on page 456 of the Hannes Schmid: Real Stories exhibition catalogue from the Kuntsmuseum Bern, 2013.

M (AKA MICHAEL CHOW)

Landscape with wild flowers

No. 8, 2023

Acrylic, handmade sterling silver, gold leaf, and eggshells collaged on canvas 76.2 in. x 75.2 in. / 195.4 cm. x 192.3 cm.

Following 50 years of success with his international restaurant empire, MR. CHOW, M (aka Michael Chow, b. 1939, Beijing) creates abstract paintings that embody what he calls his recipe: a unique fusion of Asian, American, and European aesthetics. His canvas is a battleground where he pours thick household paint, shoots from a paint gun, and scatters debris to control chaos, often physically immersing himself in the process. The paintings, resembling apocalyptic landscapes during creation, transform into luminous, atmospheric renderings of the cosmos. M’s artistic journey spans sixty years and draws from diverse influences, including his experiences in theater, painting, and cuisine.

M rekindled his interest in painting in 2011. This resurgence was sparked by Jeffrey Deitch, then Director of MOCA, Los Angeles, who discovered his artwork and urged him to resume his artistic pursuits. Jeffrey Deitch expressed, “I knew that he came from an artistic background, but I didn’t know that he was a very serious painter. There is this energy and drive of a young artist, but also this wisdom and experience of a mature man.” The early works feature dense compositions with sheets of silver, invoking Jean Dubuffet and Alberto Burri. As his practice evolves, Chinese landscape structures and calligraphic grace infuse his paintings with movement and fluidity. M’s paintings, a synthesis of his multifaceted life, represent not only exceptional artistic vision but also an extraordinary life story.

Making an Impact

For 40 years, amfAR has funded research that has revolutionized the treatment and prevention of HIV, benefited diseases beyond the virus, and forged a path toward a cure that could end AIDS once and for all. These advances would not be possible without the generosity of supporters like you. Here are some of the ways your generosity has helped make an impact.

• Lifesaving treatment: amfAR’s research has contributed to the development of four of the six main classes of antiretroviral drugs in use today.

• HIV transmission: amfAR’s first international research grant, awarded in 1987, supported a landmark study in Kenya that showed that HIV transmission can occur from females to males, and vice versa.

• CCR5, a key protein: amfAR funded research showing that HIV almost always requires a protein called CCR5 to enter and infect cells. This breakthrough led to the development of the antiHIV drug maraviroc, which blocks CCR5.

• Curing HIV: The discovery of CCR5 paved the way to the first case of an HIV cure in 2008. This was made possible by a stem cell transplant using donor cells lacking the CCR5 gene. Several people have since been cured using the same method.

• Mother-to-child HIV transmission: amfAR pioneered research that led to the use of antiretroviral drugs to block mother-to-child HIV transmission. As a result, this mode of transmission has been all but eliminated in many parts of the world.

• Other medical breakthroughs: AIDS research is providing insights into a range of diseases, their causes, and their treatment. Better diagnostic methods, therapies to restore the immune system, newer preventive antibiotics and drugs, and new treatments for infectious diseases and cancer were all developed in the course of AIDS research. amfar.org

More than 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV.

Roughly 23% of them (9 million) still don’t have access to lifesaving treatment.

Children under the age of 15 are the age group least likely to be on treatment.

As a result, children account for 12% of all AIDS-related deaths, even though they make up only 3% of people living with HIV.

To date, 10 people have been cured of HIV, but the method used—stem cell transplantation—cannot be made widely accessible.

Long-acting injectable PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)—is now approved for use and could revolutionize HIV prevention.

In the U.S., Southern states are disproportionately impacted by HIV, accounting for nearly half of all new diagnoses each year.
