Since its inception, Epic’s monthly digital magazine, The Orbit, has celebrated the people, stories and achievements that make our school unique. I am grateful to everyone who has helped make it a trusted source of news and information, and for the role it has played in strengthening our culture. Change is an integral part of what it means to be at Epic. As we kick off the 2026-27 school year, we are making a change to better align our communications efforts with Epic’s top priority: improving student outcomes. After this issue, The Orbit will transition from a monthly publication to a quarterly one. This change will allow the Communications team to devote more time and resources to initiatives that directly support students and families while continuing to produce the thoughtful, high-quality storytelling our community has come to expect. This change does not diminish the importance of sharing the incredible work taking place schoolwide. Students, teachers, staff and families will remain at the heart of our storytelling. Publishing quarterly will allow us to tell those stories with even greater depth and perspective. I encourage students, staff and families to continue submitting story ideas to theorbit@ epiccharterschools.org so we can celebrate accomplishments throughout the Epic community. As a school of choice, those stories do more than inform. They help create the sense of community that distinguishes Epic and connects families across the state. WITH STABILITY COMES FOCUS Dr. Shaun Ross Lays Out His Vision to Improve Student Outcomes For one student, improving academically might mean slowing down long enough to master a concept that hasn’t yet clicked. For another, it might mean moving ahead because it clicked last week. Yet another might be experiencing a barrier to learning that has little to do with the lesson at all. As Epic begins its 2026-27 school year, Superintendent Dr. Shaun Ross believes improving student outcomes starts with recognizing those differences, then pairing the right people, resources and support with each student. With Epic’s financial footing on solid ground, Ross said the district must begin shifting its focus to placing resources where they will do the most good to accomplish that work. For Ross, that looks like connecting teachers, additional counselors, interventionists and specialized support services, all focused on individual student needs. “So, it’s by us being able to know that the finances are steady that we can start to make long-term strategic decisions
to help kids succeed,” Ross said. One of those steps is ensuring professional development is tied directly to the academic needs revealed by student performance data. “Making sure that teachers get their needs met through professional development, making sure that professional development is aligned with the gaps that the student data is showing is crucial,” Ross said. He also pointed to intervention specialists as another layer of academic support working alongside teachers. “It’s making sure they’re tied together with teachers, making sure that they’re all working on those gaps for kids and making sure they are supported by professional development,” he said. Not every obstacle is academic.
move at a pace appropriate to their specific needs. “One advantage we have is the ability to self-pace those kids accordingly, which is what we should be doing,” he said. That can mean identifying an academic gap and providing additional help. When such a gap doesn’t exist, the opportunity changes. “If there’s not one, they should be accelerating,” Ross said. With greater financial stability, Ross said, Epic can make more deliberate decisions about where its resources go.

Ross said increased access to counselors and Epic’s existing network of wraparound support services are vital to helping address needs that can affect a student’s ability to learn. “It’s the old adage of, do you fix the behavior or do you work on the academics? You have to do both,” Ross said. He also pointed to Native American services, special education, 504 and ELL services that may require more resources to enable closer student interaction. Epic’s instructional model also offers an opportunity Ross believes the district can use to its advantage: allowing students to

That means, Ross said, “putting the money and the resources into our teachers, into the support professionals who are closer to and directly in contact with kids.” Different resources, different needs and different students. All with a singleness of purpose: making sure every Epic student has the opportunity and support to learn.
EPIC’S FIRST DAY TOP FIVE THE BASICS FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Whether your family is new to Epic or returning for another year, the first day of school can bring plenty of questions. Where’s my computer? Why can’t I see my schedule? How do I log in? Who do we call if something isn’t working? Epic’s Customer Experience team hears those questions every year. Their first piece of advice is also the simplest: Breathe. Here are five things they want families to know as the new school year begins.
1. Everything May Not Be Ready on Day One … and That’s OK A computer may still be on its way. A course may not appear yet. A student may have trouble logging in. A high school schedule may still be under construction. None of these things necessarily mean that something has gone wrong. The beginning of the school year is one of Epic’s busiest periods, and some issues can take a few days to resolve. High school schedules, for example, may
depend on records from a student’s previous school before Epic’s Graduation Support Services team can determine which courses the student needs. The important thing is to stay in communication with your teacher while those pieces fall into place. 2. Your Teacher Is Your First Point of Contact Not sure where to begin? Start with your teacher. Establishing that relationship early is one of the most important things families can do. Ask how and when you’ll meet, determine the best way to communicate and find out what your teacher expects during those first days. That includes many technology issues. If a student is having trouble logging in, contact the teacher first. Teachers can handle some common problems, including password resets, without needing to call IT. Also, remember that the beginning of school is a busy time for teachers, too. Allow them time to respond rather than expecting every question to be answered immediately. 3. No Epic Computer Yet? Your Student Can Still Get Started If your student’s Epic-issued computer hasn’t arrived, that doesn’t necessarily mean learning has to wait. Students may be able to use a personal computer to access their work. Families can also talk with their teacher about paper materials to use during the first several days. Students should also ensure they complete the required daily activities, including Bell Ringers, as directed by their teacher. Wondering where the Epic computer is? Families can check shipping information for their student’s assets through the Learning Fund.
4. Know Your Way Around Clever and the Parent Portal For students, Clever is one of the primary gateways to the tools they’ll need for school. If your student can’t find the Clever link, they can also access it through Epic’s website. Families should also become familiar with the Parent Portal. It gives parents and guardians a central place to view important information about their student, including grades and attendance, access Learning Fund resources and submit updates such as a change of address or contact information. If you’re having trouble accessing the Parent Portal, Epic’s Customer Experience team can help. 5. Epic Is a Partnership Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that virtual school works differently from a traditional classroom. Students complete much of their work from home, which means communication, independence and family involvement matter. Students need to remain engaged and keep up with their work, while parents and guardians should stay connected to their teacher, monitor progress and regularly check email for information from Epic. Nobody expects a family — especially one new to virtual education — to understand everything on the first day. Ask questions. Stay connected. Give yourself time to learn the system. And if everything isn’t perfectly in place when that first school bell rings — metaphorically speaking — remember the Customer Experience team’s top piece of advice: Breathe. It’s going to be fine.

A NOTE FROM YOUR SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES COORDINATOR Hello, Epic Families!
My name is Jessica Jones, and I’m honored to serve as your school health & services coordinator. My role is to support the health and safety of our students, whether they are learning from home or visiting one of our sites. As we settle into the school year, here are a few quick reminders to help us care for your student effectively: 1. Keep Emergency Contacts Current — Life happens, phone numbers change and family circumstances shift. Please take a moment to double-check that your child’s emergency contact information is up to date in PowerSchool. This ensures we can reach you quickly if your student becomes ill or there’s an emergency. 2. Medical Forms for In-Person Visits — If your child may attend in-person learning, testing or events in our buildings, certain forms might be needed, especially if they will require medication during that time. Examples include: • •
Medication Administration Form – if school staff will give medication. Self-Carry Form – required if your child needs to keep prescribed medications with them (e.g., inhalers for asthma, epinephrine injectors for severe allergies, diabetic supplies or pancreatic enzymes).

A new school year brings fresh opportunities, new goals, and maybe even a few butterflies for both students and families! Whether you’re brand new to Epic Charter Schools or returning for another successful year, August is the perfect time to reset routines and start with confidence. The good news? Virtual learning doesn’t require a picture-perfect classroom or a flawless schedule. What matters most is creating an environment where your student feels supported, encouraged, and ready to learn each day. Small, consistent habits often have the biggest impact, and those habits become the building blocks for a successful school year. Every learner is unique. Whether your student thrives with structure, needs extra flexibility, learns independently, or benefits from additional supports, these simple strategies can help create a positive start to the school year.
BUILD A ROUTINE THAT FITS YOUR FAMILY One of the greatest gifts you can give your student is a predictable daily routine. Students thrive when they know what to expect. Consistent routines reduce stress, improve focus and help learning become part of everyday life instead of feeling like a daily struggle. Every family’s schedule looks different, so don’t worry about creating the “perfect” routine. Find what works for your household and aim for consistency. Start Strong with These Simple Habits: • Aim for a consistent sleep and wake routine that works for your family’s schedule. • Establish a routine before logging in, such as getting ready for the day, eating breakfast and reviewing your learning plan. • Review assignments and learning goals each morning or evening, either independently or with the support of a trusted adult. • Schedule regular breaks, movement, meals and opportunities to recharge throughout the day. • End each day by celebrating one success: big or small. Remember: Routines don’t have to be rigid. Life happens! The goal is consistency, not perfection. Every day is a new opportunity to start fresh.
STUDENT WELLNESS TIP OF THE MONTH Help your student create a “Ready to Learn” space. It doesn’t have to be an entire room. A small table, a favorite chair, or even a quiet corner can become a “Ready to Learn” space. The goal is to create a comfortable area that helps your student focus and feel prepared for learning. A dedicated learning space helps students shift into “school mode” and can improve focus and organization.

KIOWA HAND GAME
Come learn and play a traditional Kiowa Hand Game where students will learn the history and cultural significance of the hand game related to the Kiowa tribe. The hand game is a guessing game involving two opposing teams, with singing, drumming, and strategy. One team hides the game pieces while the others guess. Correct guesses earn a stick. VIRTUAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Enrollment is now open for juniors and seniors interested in participating in the Virtual Internship Program. This innovative program provides students with the opportunity to develop essential workplace skills through a fully virtual learning experience. Students meet weekly via Zoom, engage in meaningful career-focused activities, and earn Next Step (PSO) credit upon successful completion of the course. The Virtual Internship
Program is an excellent option for students who may have limited access to traditional internship opportunities due to transportation challenges or geographic location. It is particularly well suited for students living in rural or underserved communities who are seeking to build professional experience and career readiness. The program culminates in a capstone project, allowing students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the course. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience, strengthen your career readiness, and earn academic credit in a flexible, virtual environment. WORK BASED LEARNING / WORK STUDY Work Based Learning help sessions are ready to go! These sessions will be extremely helpful for students and teachers. Students will receive individualized help and time to complete coursework during the sessions, thus allowing teachers to focus on other courses. Weekly sessions are already scheduled for Tuesdays from 10-11 a.m. and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. throughout the school year. Our Workforce Development Specialist, Leslie Schmitt, is also available during school hours for sessions, if the scheduled session opportunities won’t work with a student’s schedule. Sessions begin Tuesday, Aug. 25. Urge the students to begin their WBL early in the semester!
POST-GRAD PATHWAY TRANSITION SERVICES A new school year is the perfect time to start thinking about life after high school. Whether you’re considering college, CareerTech, the military, entering the workforce, or simply exploring your options, Transition Services is here to help. This year, students can take advantage of two free virtual opportunities: • Prepare U offers interactive workshops that build practical skills for life after high school. Topics include time management, resumes, interviewing, financial literacy, workplace skills, and more. • Career Conversations is a new series featuring professionals from a variety of career fields. Learn what they do, how they got there, and ask questions during these live virtual conversations. Graduating seniors, and any student beginning to explore their future, are also encouraged to schedule a one-on-one appointment with the Transition Specialist to create a personalized postsecondary plan.
