Welcome to Indianapolis! And the First In-Person CEDIA Expo Since 2019 By Anthony Savona You. Are. Here. It seemed like this day would never come, but it has, and—through no small feat—you are here. Usually when we see those words, they are accompanied by a big red arrow on a floor plan or map pointing at the spot where you are standing—the goal being to let you get your bearings so you can see not only where you are, but also where you need to go. CEDIA Expo is a lot like that big red arrow— showing you where the industry is with new products and training, but also pointing toward the path to follow for future success. And you are here. This year, we are not as many as we have been, both in exhibitors and attendees. Some of the biggest supporters of our industry have made very thoughtful decisions not to visit Indianapolis this year. Having reconsidered making the trip, many integrators
will instead follow any developments from afar. But you are here. You have arrived at CEDIA Expo 2021, which will be a show like no other before and, likely, never again. You are not only a witness to history, but a participant, and whether you are an exhibitor or an attendee, these next few days will offer an unforgettable intimate experience with your peers. Origin Acoustics, LK Distributing Partner on Amina Sound U.S. Distribution BOOTH 5006 Origin Acoustics has reached an agreement with LK Distributing to co-distribute Amina Sound invisible loudspeakers in the United States effective immediately. Origin Acoustics will work in tandem with existing North American distributor LK Distributing to grow and support the brand. LK Distributing will continue as the primary U.S. warehouse for Amina Sound. Founded in 1999 and based in Huntingdon, England, Amina Sound is known for creating the plaster over invisible loudspeaker, which launched in 2001. Amina’s technology interacts with the room, with extremely linear 180- x 180-degree all-around dispersion characteristics. With the invention of VPT (Vibrational Panel Technology), Amina was able to modify common loudspeaker design and replace the cone with a flat panel. Instead of moving forward and backward visibly like a typical conebased loudspeaker, a VPT panel uses small vibrations to generate sound that can be heard

but not seen. This allows for seamless integration of a loudspeaker into any wall, ceiling, or flat decorative panel with zero visual impact. Edge is intended for quick and simple installations where walls or ceilings are finished with just paint, wallpaper, or a thin veneer. Experts Offer Advice on Audio Acoustics

By Anthony Savona CEDIA Expo has always been the best place to get real-world education from some of the top minds in the industry, and this year continues the tradition. A prime example of this tenet in action took place yesterday morning at the “CEDIA Ask the Expert Series: Audio and Acoustics” session, which featured Gerry Lemay of Home Acoustics Alliance and Adam Pelz of Bespoke Cinemas answering questions from attendees that ranged from the fundamentals of audio calibration to a deep dive on reverberation time (RT)—with plenty of topics in between. Speaking about the fundamentals of audio calibration, Lemay said the key qualities an integrator should have are attention to detail and a passion for sound. “Some integrators—perhaps due to a lack of passion—assume that certain pieces of the calibration process can be skipped,” he said. “They do it quickly so that they can get to the end. If you don’t verify the system for every piece, there will be something wrong.” “Passion is the big part,” added Pelz. “I

Key in on what’s not right about the vocal.” When the topic of room calibration came up, both experts agreed that room calibration software is a useful tool but not a magic wand that will fix all of a room’s problems. “With any room calibration software, getting the initial mechanics right up front is critical,” said Pelz. “Make sure the speakers and seats are in the right positions—give the auto stuff a chance to do the best they can.” “It is nice to have a button that does its thing,” said Lemay, “but it is a lot easier if everything is set up right. It’s a bigger challenge if it is not. The reality is, you can’t do magic with an equalizer and fix poor design.” Many more topics were discussed, including the deep dive on RT. SnapAV has become Snap One. According to CEO John Heyman, the new name reflects the company’s goal to be the best provider of solutions, services and platforms for custom installation integrators whose businesses have grown well beyond AV products. “The name ‘SnapAV’ no longer fully represents who we are or our aspirations for the future,” Heyman said. “We kept the name ‘Snap’ because of our ongoing mission to make our partners’ lives easier. Snap One builds upon this legacy and reinforces our aspiration to be the integrator’s most valued and most trusted partner.” The new name also represents a unified company that includes legacy SnapAV and Control4 organizations following the major merger in 2019. Later this year, Snap One will unveil one unified portal so integrators can research, quote and purchase any products from a single location. The company will also have one streamlined loyalty program. The announcement of a new company name comes on the heels of several major corporate developments, including the acquisition of networking provider Access Networks and a significant investment in remote support solutions provider Parasol.

Luxul Features New Gigabit Switches Family Luxul’s new family of large managed L2/L3 Gigabit switches includes the 48 PoE+ SW-510-48P-F; 24 PoE+ SW-610-24P-R; and 48 PoE+ SW-610-48P-F. Theory Audio Design Adds IC Loudspeakers to Line
Pro Audio Technology is launching a new loudspeaker model, the SR-28212ai, the company’s most acoustically ambitious and flexible loudspeaker. The SR-28212ai features a 1.7-inch advanced polymer compression tweeter, two ultra-high output eight-inch midrange drivers and two 12-inch, 2000W woofers inside a distinctive, aimable enclosure. It serves as three loudspeakers in one: a very high-output, very fullrange loudspeaker for LCR or surround applications, an LFE (main) subwoofer and a subwoofer for surround and Atmos speaker bass management, all at the same time and all within a single six-inch deep enclosure. The so-called two-sense principle ensures that entrance areas are accessible and usable for people with sensory impairments without the help of third parties. To meet these requirements, Bird Home Automation developed the special
“D2100E Accessibility” intercom module. Eat, Drink and Luxuriate Your Way Through Indy

Recommendations here from Dan McGowan, Public Relations Specialist, CEDIA; Olivia Sellke, Account Supervisor, Caster Communications; Brian Weiss, Senior Digital Marketing Specialist, TrendyMinds; Ed Wenck, Content Strategist, White Good FIRST THINGS FIRST Indy (do NOT call it “Naptown,” not ever) is easy to navigate: It’s a big grid with a circle in the middle— literally, Monument Circle—with several spokes radiating out from that midpoint. On the southwest corner of the downtown area, called Mile Square, you’ll find the convention center, which is just north of Lucas Oil Stadium (home of the NFL’s Colts). Beyond that square, the city is broken up into several “cultural districts,” and all the downtown districts are connected by a pedestrian and bike path called the Cultural Trail. If you like to pedal, the city has a tremendous bike-sharing program sponsored by our NBA team, the Pacers. The districts we’re going to focus on beyond downtown include Massachusetts Avenue (“Mass Ave” to the locals), which is just northeast of the Square, and Fletcher Place/Fountain Square to the southeast. More adventurous folks can check out Broad Ripple—it’s a few miles north and can be easily reached with the city’s express bus service to the Ripple called the Red Line. The Monon Rail Trail, an old railroad line that’s been converted to a bike and pedestrian path, runs from the north end of Mass Ave to Broad Ripple (and well beyond, too). Now that we’ve got our bearings, let’s start with... FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD DOWNTOWN The area around Monument Circle has a lot of options, but a quick walk (or bike or Uber/Lyft ride) yields some marvelous stuff. • City Market • King Dough • Livery • Patachou • Shapiro’s Delicatessen • St. Elmo Steakhouse • Workingman’s Friend • Tinker Street MASS AVE • The Garage (at the Bottleworks) • Gordon’s Milkshake Bar • Love Handle • Rathskeller
