Tupa and his family live high in the Andes Mountains in the country of Peru. There, they keep a herd of alpacas. They use alpaca wool to make beautiful cloth. (p. 1)

First, Tupa’s father and brother shear each alpaca’s wool. They use big scissors to cut the wool. Although shearing doesn’t hurt, the alpaca still doesn’t like it! Tupa and his mother use drop spindles to spin wool into thread. One handful at a time, they twist the soft wool into yarn. (pp. 2–3) Tupa and his mother collect flowers, bark, and bugs. They use them to make brightly colored dye. Tupa’s mother washes the yarn. She boils it in a pot with the dye. When the yarn is the perfect color, Tupa’s mother hangs it up to dry. Then she rolls it into balls. (pp. 4–5) When it is time to weave, Tupa’s mother and aunt set up a loom. They pound four stakes into the ground and fasten a piece of wood across each end to make a rectangle. Then, they toss a ball of yarn back and forth. Each time, the women loop the yarn over their piece of wood, stretching out the yarn. (pp. 6–7) At last, the weaving can begin. Tupa’s mother and aunt use small tools called shuttles to help slide new yarn over and under the stretched out threads. Over and under, over and under—slowly, a piece of cloth is woven. (pp. 8–9)

Tupa and his family bring the finished textiles to the city of Chinchero. They sell them at the market. (pp. 10–11)

More Alpacas live in the Andes Mountains of South America. People raise alpacas for their fine, soft wool. The wool keeps alpacas warm in the high, cold upper regions of the mountains. Special red blood cells help alpacas breathe the thin air of the Andes, where there is not much oxygen.

Alpacas are related to camels.

The two animals are similar in many ways. Both have long necks and legs. Both have feet with two large toes. Their mouths have split upper lips that can move separately. The split lips help the animals pull their food from the ground.
