Hello, 2024. One year closer… Remember when 2030 seemed as if it was a lifetime away and 2050 didn’t sound real? Well, we have officially entered 2024, a scant six years from the oft cited deadline for Architecture 2030—where all new buildings and major renovations are hoped to have achieved zero carbon. Although the date may seem daunting, the progress being made is real. In this issue, we’ll take a look at some of the new products, new design approaches, and new rules that keep advancing the industry toward this important architectural initiative.

Let’s begin with an exploration of the latest iteration of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) 2024. While it has yet to make its official release, Barbara Horwitz-Bennett interviewed several professionals who had knowledge on the notable new items this version would contain. Onsite renewable energy production and onsite energy storage requirements are two of the additions garnering a lot of attention, as is the code’s firsttime recognition of thermal bridges, which can wreak havoc on a building in several important ways. Get a sneak peek at IECC 2024 on page 28.

Accelerating to Net Zero The U. S. Green Building Council-Los Angeles (usgbc-la), an independent nonprofit, is not just a community of green building and sustainability professionals; it is an organization trying to further the goal (and probability) of a net-zero future. Balancing the amount of greenhouse gas produced and removed in the built environment is ambitious, and not at all possible without innovative materials, systems, and technology. Enter usgbc-la’s Net Zero Accelerator. Colin Mangham, the program’s director, explains how it is making an impact.

What is the usgbc-la Net Zero Accelerator?

As an organization, usgbc-la’s mission is really to accelerate sustainability in Southern California and create a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable region for all. We are home to the only Net Zero Accelerator in the world focused on zero energy, carbon, water, and waste in the built environment. We take the technologies that exist today and help them scale with the goal to achieve a net zero, or perhaps even a net positive, future. We select companies that we believe are going to help us get there faster. We focus on tangible pilot projects, ones that harness the collective expertise and diversity within our community of sustainability practitioners, green builders, and other stakeholders. For our member companies, we play a vital role in helping them de-risk, stress-test, refine, and sometimes pivot their innovations with the overarching goal being to prepare them for scaled adoption. Alternatively, for those already making strides in other geographical markets, we assist them in seamlessly piloting their solutions into large portfolios within the Los Angeles area, validating success with data and expanding their client opportunities. This is our program’s fifth year. We have supported 90 companies and have been tracking about 40 pilots since 2019.

This year the vast majority of leading companies arrived within the same color category. Completely breaking stride with its blue companions was pantone’s unique take on the 2024 color trends and its Color of the Year: Peach Fuzz. Nestled between pink and orange, on the other side of the color spectrum, it’s interesting to note that Peach Fuzz is described as evoking some of the same emotions as the others. CARBON EMISSIONS

A good place to start is by getting an accurate snapshot of carbon emissions levels. “You must always measure energy use first and then set your strategy,” Roxane Spears said. “We spent a couple of years measuring everything. When we measured, we looked at what our current production was and also added in percent increases in production every year, so we could account for the higher emissions. That measurement to me is really key so you know where you are and where you are going.” FLOORING

Tarkett’s VP of Sustainability Talks Goals and Misconceptions Four years ago, Roxane Spears became Tarkett’s vice president of sustainability in North America. Her goal with the Paris-based company is simple: to help Tarkett lower its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. Inspired by the Paris Agreement’s call for net zero emissions by 2050, Tarkett’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint is a holistic—and realistic—approach. “We don’t try to do everything— we focus on what we can impact. That’s driven a lot of what we do and was our starting point—and then we increase from there,” said Spears. As a fourth generation and family-owned business, lowering the carbon footprint is more than an industry trend. It is simply the right thing to do. Tarkett started recycling its commercial flooring materials more than 30 years ago when sustainability was a relatively new concept in the industry. “Sustainability has always been a part of the DNA,” said Spears.

Flooring Can Make a Difference As a permanently installed, high-volume product, the flooring on a project is of particular relevance to creating a healthy and sustainable interior space. According to Spears, the flooring industry, in general, is well-suited to reduce its carbon footprint because of how its products are made. Flooring products can be manufactured with layers—from the backing to the fiber—with recycled or bio-based content. Incorporating these materials are some of the easiest ways to lower a product’s carbon emissions.

Addressing Misconceptions in Sustainability As an industry veteran, Spears has encountered many misconceptions in the world of sustainability. One is that if a product is carbon neutral, it will contribute toward a healthy built environment, but

one quality does not necessarily indicate the other. “For a product to be carbon neutral, you have to measure its environmental impact. That is where EPDs come into play,” said Spears. EPDs take comprehensive, third party-verified life cycle assessments (LCAs), which quantify the environmental impacts that arise from material inputs and outputs, over a product’s entire life cycle, and turn them into a standardized label.

As companies make a real and meaningful effort to reduce carbon emissions, support from the design community can go a long way. “If we support companies with good behavior, that shifts everything.”

“An EPD doesn’t tell you the health impact of a product,” said Spears. “You need different certifications to really understand what that product is about. You could create a low carbon footprint product if you didn’t have to look at the ingredients. You might find a material that cuts a product’s carbon footprint in half but may contain heavy metals or asbestos.” EPDs don’t report on the ingredients or the hazards of a material’s ingredients. Protecting indoor air quality by limiting the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals that off gas is an important step in achieving healthy interiors. Material transparency plays a role in this, as architects must know the ingredients in a product, to ensure the potentially harmful substances have been avoided.

Designers must research a material’s Health Product Declaration (HPD) to verify that a product will contribute toward a healthy environment. An HPD contains a standardized, accurate and consistent reporting of a product’s contents as well as the associated health information for the product as it is used in the built environment. Design teams can also request certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America or the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. Another misconception is that it’s nearly impossible to get a product to net zero. For corporations trying to get to carbon neutral, or beyond, the biggest impact is looking at the supply chain and manufacturing and measuring its carbon impact. “We have a linoleum that is carbon negative. This is possible because the materials we use are very high bio-based and the facility produces its own energy. With that combination, we are able to have a carbon negative product,” said Spears.

Anticipating 2050 Spears, who consults often with Tarkett’s Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer, Arnaud Marquis, says the company sets goals every three years to reduce carbon emissions, since 2050 is almost 30 years away. “By that date, most of us employed today will no longer work at Tarkett. But [our] feeling is, if you are setting a goal for 2050, and nobody is going to be here, then what are they going to do to get it done?” said Spears. The company must already be working toward that future goal.

s businesses and consumers adopt more digital technology, the need to store data grows exponentially. Bitcoin mining and AI are only making the surge swell. More data means more servers and more servers mean more data centers. “Demand for data centers is at an alltime high, and it’s been trending that way for a few years now,” adds David Fanning, Critical Facilities Leader, Senior Associate, Gensler, Denver. Where companies once owned and operated their own small data centers, there’s a big shift underway. “It’s becoming more consolidated into fewer entities owning much larger areas of the internet landscape,” says Tom Widawsky, Principal, Tech, HDR, New York City.

While enterprise data centers have been the most prevalent data center design projects, they are declining in numbers. Many major hospitals, banks, or corporations that once operated their own data center to have content on-premises, have opted for using colocation data centers instead. “Colocation providers build data centers for others to occupy,” explains Widawsky. There are two types

of colocation. Retail colocation is where providers build out and operate the facility and you occupy your IT equipment in their space.

“Look at companies like Google and Meta. They want their facilities to have some character to allow people that are working there to not feel like they are working in a concrete box all day long. A server rack does not care about what its surroundings look like, but the folks who are working there do.”

The other option gives the customer more control. “Wholesale is where a developer-type data center operator builds a building as a shell. Maybe it has got power to it. Maybe it has some base infrastructure, but essentially if I’m a customer, I then come

in and dictate what the fit-out of the mechanical/electrical systems is going to be. It is built to suit,” shares Jackson Metcalf, Critical Facilities Leader, Industrial & Logistics Leader, Senior Associate, Gensler, Chicago. The other main type of data center is hyperscale. “Hyperscale is typically defined by the big five: Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft,” says

Widawsky. As the name suggests, these are usually massive facilities and often operated by these cloud providers. Both hyperscale and colocation operators, according to Widawsky, are investing in and creating prototype designs. “They are trying to do something that is very repeatable, that is very standardized, and very consistent as far as procurement and size expectations go,” he adds.

As density increases, so does the heat. Data centers are becoming more dense and mechanical systems must keep pace. “Picture your old computer tower at home. There’s a fan in there that removes the heat, the harder it works,” explains Fanning. Data centers have rows and rows of servers with fans to move the air and vent the heat that’s generated (aka hot aisle containment). “Historically, you would have a density in each rack of servers that typically hovered around three to five kilowatts per rack. What we’re seeing now is the advance of these servers. They are tento twenty times more dense. So, [it’s gone] from three kilowatts a rack, up to 30 to 50 and in some cases even higher,” he adds. As the temperature in data centers rises, new means of cooling the equipment are being explored, such as direct-to-chip liquid cooling or immersion cooling, which encloses the server equipment in dielectric liquid to dissipate heat. “The cooling technology is getting closer and closer to the equipment that it’s cooling,” says Fanning. “With the advent of in-rack or direct-tochip cooling, you are capturing that heat more efficiently, as opposed to just removing it via air through the facility.” Data center developers are using a variety of different cooling approaches as testbeds, notes Metcalf, to explore which works best. “It

is an exciting time for us on the design side, because we are getting to explore these advancements in their early developmental stage,” he notes. These new technologies also impact the physical footprint of the data center. “Because you are not removing hot air, you need less, what we would call, white space,” adds Fanning. Cooling technologies aren’t the only advancements being made. “As the need for efficiency increases, the industry has pushed OEM manufacturers to figure out a way to run their servers hotter because that will reduce our cooling requirements,” notes Widawsky. With servers operating at a higher temperature and alternative cooling technologies being deployed, energy efficiency is more easily achieved.

Water management drives decisions. Climate change and the increase in global population are making water a more universal consideration for architecture projects, including data centers. Widawsky explains: “In the very beginning when we were looking at energy consumption, the quick solution was evaporative cooling, which became very popular. But as the industry grew and these data centers became larger, water consumption became millions of gallons a day and the industry immediately recognized that that is not a sustainable long-term

path.” With a real push toward smarter use of resources, data centers have pivoted toward closed-loop systems where water is reused and recirculated. “Water’s a big deal when it comes to data centers, and alternative means of providing cooling are definitely where I think things are headed,” adds Metcalf.

Data centers, especially hyperscale, consume a tremendous amount of power. Developers need to know that the existing grid can supply enough power to the data center. “I’ve heard that substation demand is on a five- to seven-year backlog,” Metcalf says. “That is a major driver in where a data center developer or operator is going to consider building.” Not only do the power needs of the new facility need to be considered during initial planning, but it’s equally important to ask if additional power can be supplied should further development of the site be necessary in the future. Widawsky warns: “All of that planning needs to be thought about when you first purchase the site and not later on. You are certainly not doing any major excavation work once you have an active region already operating.” Because of delays in the availability of power, more and more developers are looking at onsite power generation in a variety of forms, such as hydrogen fuel cells. “They are only being adopted in smaller situations today, simply because none of these systems are designed to handle the scale of power that these sites have increased to; whereas they may have done a 12-megawatt to even a 24-megawatt facility, now these sites are going to 100 megawatts. That strains what some of these alternative energy systems or onsite power systems can provide,” explains Fanning.

Data is moving closer to businesses and customers. The rural data center is not going away anytime soon. “Most of them are located on the outskirts simply because the land is cheaper, the power is usually cheaper, and honestly, once the first data center provider goes there and improves

the infrastructure for network and cabling, you will start seeing these hub areas where several places will develop,” explains Widawsky. There is some evidence, however, that data centers—especially colocation providers— are moving closer to cities. “You will see

those big campuses out in the nether regions. Those are the primary areas where they do a lot of their work, but they also need smaller infill sites closer to urban areas to make sure that they have a streamlined network system for end-to-end minimal latency issues,” he says. Multi-story

projects (historically less common in the U.S. than Europe and Asia) may become more common. “If you can get farm field real estate prices and 200 acres, it is really affordable to build big single-story data centers,” explains Metcalf. “There is not the land in surrounding suburbs where you

can build a monster campus, especially single story. There are still a few sites, but generally speaking, it is not abundant. And so the need for multistory [data centers] has always existed.”

Aesthetics matter. As data centers move closer to urban/

suburban areas, design becomes more important—to be a better neighbor, fight NIMBY resistance, and meet local requirements. “High-income suburbs do not want an industrial shed. They want the tax revenue. They want the high-paying jobs. There are so many benefits to having a data center in

your community. But they don’t necessarily want to look at what would get built if there were no regulations to make them be better,” says Metcalf. An increasing number of urban/suburban data centers are paying attention to façades, and landscaping, and tastefully imbuing the design with local and regional flavor. Colocation data center providers especially are paying attention to design. “They need to have a marketing capability because they’re trying to attract customers to their locations,” explains Widawsky. “It’s a competitive market.” The same is true for the need to attract and retain talent. “There is such a talent shortage of people who have experience in this field,” says Metcalf. “Building a low-quality workplace is a shortsighted decision. When you are spending hundreds to a thousand a square foot on the portion of the building with the computing and electrical gear and all that, the interior workplace is like a rounding error for one of these buildings. People want to be proud of where they work.”

Build now for the future. “You generally try to build a building for at least a 20-year lifespan. But with data centers, you’re building that building for something that has a general lifespan of 3 to 5 years,” notes Widawsky. Short of being psychic, it can be hard to predict what the future of data center design will look like. However, architects doing these projects regularly are keen to understand both current practicalities and future advancements and how a project today might be built to accommodate the technology of tomorrow. Fanning shares the influence AI is having: “The design parameters continue to change as people understand how this new technology is deployed, and what these new densities really mean in terms of energy usage, airflow, etc. What we are seeing now is not a neat and clean, ‘We need a hyperscale data center or an AI data center.’ Instead, it is ‘We need a hybrid data center that accommodates both.’ It is requiring far more innovation than we have seen before.” One of HDR’s hyperscale clients planned space for cooling distribution units (CDUs) at the ends of the rows. “Even though the current model for their chips and their servers today weren’t requiring water to the chip, they knew that they were going to be implementing that in the next three to five years,” says Widawsky.

“In the very early 2000s, the EPA issued a report talking about data centers and the fact that they were going to exceed 5% of the total power usage of the whole U.S. power grid. Building envelope professionals are applauding the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) 2024’s first-time recognition of thermal bridges, along with modest increases in air leakage and thermal performance requirements. Of significance on the electrical side, EV-ready requirements at parking facilities for both residential and commercial occupancies are making IECC 2024 the first national model code with a mandatory requirement for electric vehicle power transfer system equipment infrastructure. “Beyond the EV-ready requirements, onsite renewable energy production and onsite energy storage will significantly increase the efficiency, resilience, reliability and sustainability of energy distribution and utilization in buildings,” states Bryan P. Holland, MCP, CStd. managing director, technical field representatives, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Port Charlotte, Fla. Our coverage provides some background and details on some of these changes, alongside expert commentary.

For over three decades, the International Code Council has developed an energy code that has reduced the impact of energy use on our planet and saved consumers billions of dollars on their energy bills. From 2006 to 2021, the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) increased its efficiency requirements by about 40%, or an average of 8% a cycle.

Thermal Bridging Because thermal bridging significantly compromises building enclosure thermal performance, potentially leading to condensation, mold and durability issues, the IECC 2024’s new thermal bridging requirements are significant. In addition to alleviating these potential problems, enclosures designed without thermal bridging issues deliver enhanced thermal insulation, energy savings and occupant comfort. “Even though the new requirements are not considered particularly stringent, the consideration of thermal bridging alone raises awareness of this performance degradation issue,” explains Helen Sanders, Technoform North America, Twinsburg, Ohio. Applicable for buildings in climate zones 4 to 8, prescriptive requirements address the largest culprits for thermal bridging including balconies and floor decks, cladding supports, structural beams and columns, parapets and the intersection of fenestration with the surrounding walls.

This means:  Balconies and floor decks cannot penetrate the building envelope without separately including mechanisms that minimize thermal bridging through the envelope.

THERMAL BRIDGING

To meet new thermal bridging requirements, products like this thermally broken cladding attachment will be key.

 Cladding attachments must allow the continuous

insulation to pass behind linear cladding supports.  Structural beams and columns must be wrapped in a minimum amount of insulation where they penetrate the building envelope.  For non-metal fenestration, the thermal break needs to be aligned, within a specified dimension, with the continuous insulation. There is also a requirement for insulating the rough opening.  Parapets must be insulated to reduce thermal bridging where the building envelope is penetrated, depending on the design. “Including thermal bridging mitigation requirements makes design and construction teams think about how to manage these conditions, causes them to analyze the condensation and thermal performance risk, and therefore gives them the opportunity to decide to improve further than the code,” adds Sanders, president of the Facade Tectonics Institute, whose organization provided a lot of technical input for the development of the thermal bridging and air barrier language in the IECC 2024. To meet these new thermal bridging requirements, David W. Altenhofen, aia, senior technical director of enclosures for the Philadelphia-based RWDI, recommends the Building Envelope Thermal Bridging Guide, developed by Morrison Hershfield and sponsored by a number of Canadian-based companies. “The updated code provides helpful new options for combinations of insulation between framing plus continuous insulation in the R-value table for opaque components,” he states.

Seattle Convention Center’s Summit building, designed by LMN Architects, is a good example of achieving high window area in a jurisdiction with a stringent energy code and backstop requirement by using high-performance fenestration. This 15-story building is part of the largest revitalization and construction effort in the city’s history. The aluminum-framed curtain wall, manufactured and installed by Enclos, is made up of Guardian’s SuperNeutral SN 62-34 low-E coating in UltraClear low-iron glass. Technoform’s polyamide thermal barriers are installed throughout the assembly, ensuring high thermal performance. This helped enable the design to meet Seattle’s high thermal requirements as verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council’s commercial certification program. “Increasing thermal efficiency of fenestration not only helps save energy costs and carbon emissions, it also provides the freedom to design with more glass to create delightful, well-lit, welcoming spaces what are both comfortable and healthy for building occupants,” stated Bill Blazek, Technoform, Twinsburg, Ohio. For air leakage, IECC 2024 reduces acceptable air leakage from 0.40 CFM/ft2 to 0.35 CFM/ft2, aligning with ASHRAE 90.1-2022. In addition, air leakage testing requirements have been expanded to more buildings and to more climate zones. According to Sanders, these changes will better ensure that actual performance is more in line with what is specified.

Experts also assure building teams that the new requirements will not be hard to meet. According to Theresa Weston, president of the Richmond-based Holt Weston Consulting, who represents the Air Barrier Association on the 2024 IECC envelope subcommittee, the new requirement will need project teams to consider and define the air barrier system in the design phase and participate in quality control of the air barrier materials and accessories installation, especially at material interfaces. Another change impacting the building enclosure is U-factor reductions for fixed fenestration in climate zones 5 to 8, to align with current zone 4 to 6 requirements of 0.34 BTU/of.hr.ft2. “While the changes are more incremental, it pushes higher thermal performance into climate zone 3, requiring thermally broken frames and dual pane low-e coated insulating glass with at least one of the following—wider/higher performance thermal barriers in the frames, warm-edge spacer, argon fill or fourth surface low E,” reports Sanders. For curtainwall systems, building teams are given the option of using a non-metal Polymide pressure plate. While the New Building Institute applauds IECC 2024’s efforts to raise the bar for building envelope performance, the organization believes the code doesn’t go far enough. “The building shell is the most long-lasting component of any building, and as such is the cornerstone of the energy code. Renewable Energy Based on a technical brief put out by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and aligning with the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022 requirements, IECC 2024 requires new buildings have a means for on-site renewable energy generation. In addition, energy storage ready requirements are included in the updated code.

Energy monitoring will now be required in smaller spaces with the code’s size threshold reduction to 10,000 sq. ft. to align with common benchmarking policies. Furthermore, jurisdictions have the option of adopting appendices to require all-electric or electricready buildings in an effort to phase out fossil fuels. “The electrification of buildings from renewable energy sources enhances decarbonization and greenhouse gas emission reductions, while increasing the reliability of energy for buildings during peak demand, natural disasters and as society trends towards urbanization,” states Holland.

Commenting on these changes, Holland, a 2024 iecc Development Committee member, notes that energy storage provides energy resiliency and reliability from utility supply disruptions and helps increase the efficiency and reliability of onsite renewable energy production by serving as a back-up energy supply.

This reality is driving a need for corporations and organizations to provide accessible, easy-to-use charging stations on their premises. Enter ChargePoint. With a variety of scalable solutions, the company offers standalone EV charging stations, AC and DC options, networked solutions, easy-to-use apps and more. These options were particularly useful for Citrix, a cloud computing company based in Fort Lauderdale.

For example, if all chargers are busy, an employee can put themselves on the app’s Waitlist. Once another car completes its charge, the waiting driver can then send a friendly reminder to his or her co-worker to kindly move their car to free up the charging station.

As the company began installing chargers at its different locations, they eventually scaled up to tie everything together.

LeLack also appreciates the ChargePoint Cloud Dashboard, which enables her to track driver data, energy usage and other aspects of their charging program and compare data across all stations at all locations. “It’s amazing to be able to just log in, put in the metrics I want to pull and see live data on our portfolio of stations.”

“We decided to network the stations across all locations so we could centrally manage everything. The ChargePoint Cloud Dashboard made that a reality,” said Laurie LeLack, global director, corporate real estate and risk management, Citrix. In addition to enabling management to set charging policies, such as who is allowed to charge and for how long, the platform enables Citrix employees to communicate.

“I also love the environmental statistics about the carbon offset,” she continued. “Citrix really takes a science-based approach to how we are monitoring our emissions. I love that I can take a screen grab of the dashboard and add it into a PowerPoint for collaboration with our Sustainability and ESG team.”

IECC 2024 also requires grid-integrated controls on space heating and cooling systems that adjust temperature within 4°F and grid-integrated water heating on electric storage water heaters. Citing the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Roadmap for Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings, Russ Manning, ICC’s senior vice president of technical services, notes that technologies such as grid-integrated thermostats and water heating can save on the order of $100 to $200 billion in electric costs over the next two decades by reducing and shifting the time of use of building energy consumption from peak energy use periods.

Another noted mechanical engineering change is the inclusion of the Total System Performance Ratio (TSPR) as a compliance option for mechanical building systems. Echoing ASHRAE 90.1-22’s TSPR inclusion, the metric evaluates overall system efficiency as opposed to individual component efficiency.

“TSPR is a ratio that compares the annual heating and cooling load of a building to the annual energy consumed by the building’s HVAC system, which can be determined by a web-based calculation tool,” says Manning. “This provides the industry opportunities to move towards addressing energy for the built environment using a holistic performance-based code structure.” Another HVAC-related addition is a focus on heat pumps, thereby closing an historic code loophole that allowed for less efficient space conditioning equipment, according to Denniston.

80% of today’s built environment will be part of the United States’ existing building stock in 2050. The new code mandates energy efficiency improvements for existing building retrofits or additions. The most significant change, says Manning, is the inclusion of additional energy efficiency credits that must be achieved based on the level of change to the existing building. “Using the same methodology

as new construction, existing buildings undergoing an alteration or addition must provide a minimum number of energy efficiency credits from a table of roughly 30 different energy efficiency options based upon the building’s occupancy and climate zone,” he explains.

Altenhofen adds that new provisions lend enhanced flexibility to make existing buildings more energy efficient. For example, there is new guidance on floor alterations, below-grade wall alterations and air barrier alternations, making it clearer that alterations to a portion of an existing building’s thermal envelope do not mandate compliance for the entire thermal envelope. “There is some new flexibility given regarding roof/ceiling/attic insulation if there are ‘limiting conditions,’” he adds. “A registered design professional or other approved third party can put forth plans that do not comply with insulation requirements for new construction. There is now a methodology to demonstrate costeffectiveness based on the social cost of carbon, but this has yet to drive change. “Larger steps in stringency will need to be made in the 2027 and 2030 IECC versions to achieve an envelope performance that supports both net-zero performance and needed resilience/passive survivability performance. This may require that effectiveness justifications can be based on social cost of carbon analysis rather than just energy cost,” she suggests. Moving forward, Manning explains that the Code Council put the IECC on continuous maintenance, which means that development will continue without a substantial pause in order to account for rapidly evolving building technology in future updates.

A Fishnet Facade Drawing inspiration from Gothenburg’s history as a historical seaport, Kineum Tower's facade’s crisscross structure resembles a fisherman’s net and represents the modern crane trusses transporting goods, as viewed across the harbor. Beyond beauty, this façade offers impressive performance—24/7. The breeam-certified 28-story mixed-use high rise plays host to a buzz of activity from its office tenants by day, and hotel, dining, pool, and spa guests visiting in the evening. “Kineum acquires its name from the Greek ‘kinéo’ meaning ‘to set in motion.’ With this in mind, we have created a building characterized by its visual reflection of movement and dynamism. Kineum achieves its purpose of creating a pulse, vitalizing the area and engaging people,” states Marco Testa, CEO, Reflex Architects, Stockholm. Another element that makes the building’s form unique is its diamond-shaped glass roof. Essentially comprising the building’s fifth side, the parametric roof emphasizes the building’s verticality and finishes the elegant silhouette.

This 28-story building contains offices, a hotel, a spa, a gym, and conference facilities. It was designed to help get people excited about going back to work in the post-pandemic world.

The breeam-certified 28-story mixed use Kineum is a welcome addition to the Gothenburg skyline in Sweden.

Testa’s team used Graphisoft’s Archicad BIM software to develop and test early massing studies and design concepts. The architects also used Graphisoft’s Curtain Wall tool to create customized profiles of the fishnet pattern that would make this building remarkable—one of the most challenging parts of the project. The team at Reflex sought a design that would strike the balance between transparency and opaque necessary to deliver a high-performance façade. The goal was to achieve impressive daylighting levels throughout the interior while mitigating solar heat gain that can compromise the thermal performance and comfort of the building. “The construction consists of more than a thousand façade elements of glass and aluminum, giving the structure its unique, three-dimensional exterior,” explains Testa.

Each pane of jumbo-sized flat glass—3.2 m × 6 m— was divided into six triangles to minimize waste. There are approximately 100 floor-to-ceiling, singlestory triangle modules on each floor. “These glass triangles are held in place in a rectangular module with a unique aluminum profile system, which is deepest where they intersect, protruding half a meter,” said Testa. The thickness of the aluminum profiles is based upon solar study calculations that helped to minimize solar heat loads, while offering pleasant natural light to pass into the offices and hotel rooms. The high-performance glazing system was designed to achieve 25% better energy performance than national requirements. The building was certified as breeam Excellent, achieving one of the highest levels of sustainability certification available in the UK and Europe.

Striking Facade

The toughened solar control glass, with a double or triple silver coating, offers a solar factor of 33%, blocking 2/3rds of solar radiation, while bringing in 62% of visible light. With an insulating Ug value of just 1.0 W/(m2K), the glazing is well suited for cold climates.

The unitized glass facade has narrow face widths and can be outfitted with large insert units as projected top-hung or parallel-opening windows with vent weights of up to 250 kg. Construction with stepped insulating glazing ensures seamless integration into the façade. For Kineum, a projectspecific unitized modular façade was designed.

GLASS MODULES

GLASS FABRICATION

The design and fabrication team took a maximum-sized flat glass unit of 3.2 meters x 6 meters and divided it into six triangles to form the pieces of the pre-fabricated façade.

The highly sustainable building is constructed with prefabricated concrete slabs and steel frames. The structural team successfully engineered the building’s support system to reduce the cement content in the concrete core, resulting in carbon dioxide savings of 200 tons, 39% lower than the use of traditional concrete. The cast-in-place concrete core enabled the building to have a column-free floorplan to support a large variety of programs and layouts. The open plan also allows occupants to have 360-degree views of the city. Additionally, at the end of the façade’s usable life, the glass and aluminum can be recycled.

Streamlining Workflows with Software In addition to supporting the evolution of this complicated façade’s design, Archicad was instrumental in fostering communication and sharing ideas across the architectural team, their consultants, the client, and the construction team. The design team leveraged the power of BIMx, Graphisoft’s award-winning app to explore the building model and project deliverables from anywhere on an iPad, iPhone, or Android phone or tablet. The architects simply extracted IFC files directly from Archicad and then used BIMx to present a clear visualization of the building in their office, the client’s office, or on the construction site. The team also used VR technology to share the design intent and communicate the complexities and details of the design to all the consultants and contractors. The team used Solibri to run advanced checks to identify issues in the model and then used BIM Collab to communicate this key information to the relevant team members.

Using Archicad and Graphisoft’s CurtainWall tool, Reflex Architects fine tuned the shapes and sizes of the triple-glazed glass, opaque panels behind the glass and criss-crossed metallic cladding on the façade.

The diagonal cross patterns in Kineum’s façade are Larson metal panels from Alucoil. Made from aluminum alloy, the product comes in a variety of finishes. In addition to aluminum, Larson is available in stainless steel, copper, brass, and zinc.

RSA Trustmark Building, Mobile, Ala. In refreshing the 34-story RSA Trustmark office building in Mobile, Ala., Bank Wire SZ-4 woven wire mesh was customized to fit a specific color and style. Whereas the SZ-4 pattern is typically woven with a stainless-steel warp wire and a bronze, copper or brass fill wire, the architect wanted to reduce the amount of bronze in the overall weave. Working with Banker Wire to produce the desired effect, it was decided to alternate from bronze and

For London’s Hide at 85 Piccadilly restaurant, two woven antique brass-plated wire mesh patterns, M22-28 and I-188 were combined to create an artistic, textured cladding on the elevator exterior. M22-28 is a small-scale, twin-wire intercrimp pattern and I-188 is a large, single-wire intercrimp pattern.

166 Geary Street, San Francisco Known as the Grace Building, the historic 166 Geary Street San Francisco office building, built in 1907, was in need of an elevator renovation. While retaining the original dome, Unique Elevator Interiors chose Banker Wire’s woven wire mesh M33-2 to preserve the classic look. The rich bronze tones and flat-faced basket weave create both warmth and texture, and the 9.2% open design reveals a glimpse into the elevator shaft and mechanics.

According to Unique Elevator Interiors, the original cab design was very open. Riders could see into the elevator shaft. The design team selected woven bronze mesh to stay true to that rider experience.

Problem-Solving Ceiling for Restaurant Remodel Create an atmosphere of authentic Old World, Italian charm with considerable design constraints that include an existing T-bar suspended ceiling.

CHALLENGE

When the Italian Kitchen restaurant in Vancouver, B.C., lost its lease, owner The Glowbal Group decided to move the restaurant down the street, into a site vacated by another restaurant. Monica Jeffers, of Monica Jeffers Interior Design, Squamish, B.C., says the new location’s existing design had become, “tired and dated and sad.” Her assignment was to create a modern yet classic interpretation of “an authentic, Italian, pasta-focused experience,” a visual expression of the restaurant’s slogan, “Old World Charm, New World Vibe.” However, an aesthetic obstacle hung over the project: an existing T-bar suspended ceiling grid that had to be retained in the new design. She thought, “How the heck am I going to deliver a beautiful restaurant with an old T-bar ceiling, and a low ceiling height at that?” “It’s an unusual request from a client, to do a design of this caliber and be asked to retain a T-Bar ceiling.” She began researching ceiling products that would fit the grid, the budget, and her design vision.

SOLUTION

Neutral colors and warm materials. Stonework and brick walls. The use of marble. Soft lighting—often accomplished with candles, sconces, or lanterns. Antique paintings. Ornate, without feeling cluttered or enclosed. These are some of the hallmarks of Old-World charm. Was it possible to capture the essence of Old World in this space?

“When I found Ceilume’s thermoformed ceiling panels, I thought, ‘Wow, this is an amazing and affordable option that fits the look we are going for.’” Jeffers selected the company’s Orleans panels— a gracious floral design—one of Ceilume’s 39 traditional and contemporary patterns. To increase the perception of greater ceiling height, she designed dropped millwork beams that divide the ceiling into 8 ft. × 8 ft. sections. “It seems counterintuitive,” Jeffers explains, but the different levels create the illusion of more height, “just by bringing the millwork grid down 4 in.” Ceilume, the leading manufacturer of thermoformed ceilings, offers 16 colors and finishes and Jeffers selected a

light color, “Sand,” to enhance the apparent height of the rooms.” The existing T-bar grid was covered with self-adhering Ceilume Decorative Strips to match the panels. Because the panels are impervious and easy to wash, they are code-compliant for food preparation areas. This allowed Jeffers to keep a unified ceiling design throughout main dining rooms, including over the antipasto bar where the chef produces hand-cut pasta.

Designing a Safe, Secure and Daylit Aquatic Center Hafer Designs crafts a building envelope that brings daylight into the competition space during the day, and serves as a soft, welcoming beacon after sunset.

CHALLENGE

City officials in Evansville, Indiana, realized that the city’s deteriorating 1975 Lloyd Pool facility could no longer meet the needs of the local community, let alone high school, collegiate, NCAA and USA swimming meets. Hafer Design was tasked with designing the new Deaconess Aquatic Center, complete with a 950,000-gallon competition pool named after Olympic gold medalist and Evansville native Lilly King, a 91,000-gallon leisure pool and a 1,750-sq.-ft. outdoor splash pad. One key design challenge was finding a way to make these notoriously dark and cavernous spaces feel evenly illuminated and inviting.

While limiting glare and reducing the penetration of hot spots into the building, UniQuad welcomes soft, uniform natural light into the center. The diffuse lighting enables the swimmers to focus on their training and performance, and the spectators to enjoy a comfortable, non-glare environment. “The translucent panels that flank the south and east walls of the competition pool area allow natural light to penetrate the competition pool space while minimizing harsh shadows that would distract swimmers and lifeguards,” states Jennifer Kissel, senior associate/architect, Hafer Design, Evansville, Ind. The system delivers an additional level of safety and security by blocking a direct line of sight from the outside into the pool area.

SOLUTION

The architectural team at Hafer Design addressed that issue by bringing daylight into the competitive pool area in a way that prevented glare from disrupting swimmers and fans. They specified more than 13,000-sq.-ft. of custom-designed Kingspan Light + Air UniQuad translucent wall system panels.

UniQuad translucent wall systems feature a unitized panel design that provides light control and high thermal performance. aluminum framing pays tribute to the industrial history of the neighborhood and the wood tones add warmth. Winner of the Aquatics International 2022 Dream Design Award, the Deaconess Aquatic Center includes a competition pool and a large mezzanine for 960 spectators lending full views of the entire area. The pool itself offers 10 lap lanes, two bulkheads with numerous pool configurations, a separated diving well, under-deck lane line storage and a state-of-the-art timing system. The smaller recreational pool contains four lap lanes, a stair entry, a zero-depth entry area with play features, a basketball net and space for swim lessons with a built-in shelf where kids can sit. In addition to a mural of its namesake, Lilly King, the facility also features a wall display that showcases the accomplishments of another Evansville native, Paralympic gold medalist Mikaela Jenkins.

Improving Access to Florida’s Premier Historic Hotel A new lift solution makes accessibility stylish at the fully renovated Don CeSar hotel.

Opening in 1928, the Don CeSar hotel in St. Pete Beach, Florida, has been welcoming travelers for nearly a century. While the property boasts a glamorous history, after over 90 years of service, it was time for a full-scale renovation and revitalization that would prepare the hotel for another hundred years.

Ascension wheelchair lifts were selected to provide fully ADA-compliant access to an upper-level poolside bar—without physically compromising the historic hotel.

During the renovation, Parker-Torres Design, the architecture firm that led the project, was faced with a need to preserve the visual appeal of the hotel, prevent unnecessary demolition to the building, and provide reliable ADA-compliant second-story access to a new poolside bar.

“Creating a new accessible and usable space for all within a building that was built in 1928 is a challenge in itself,” said Heather Gray, Senior Designer at Parker-Torres. “We used [an Ascension] lift next to the new lit staircase.” The Ascension Clarity wheelchair lift used in the Don CeSar is designed to provide second-story access while maintaining a low profile. The lift features a small footprint and glass enclosure, as well as quiet operation. Additionally, Parker-Torres Design chose a custom color so the lift would match the finish of the hotel bar and blend into the atmosphere. “The sleek design allows for a visually pleasing look that provides ADA compatibility so that all guests

Katelyn Rossier, aia, ncarb, lssbb. By day she’s an associate and project architect in SmithGroup’s Pittsburgh office and by night and on the weekends, she runs her mentorDINO— Designers Innovating New Opportunities, creating training programs and publicizing architect stories through articles and a podcast.

Drawing from her own experiences acclimating to the profession, Katelyn Rossier created a bundle of targeted classes teaching key skills, both technical and soft. She posts weekly Architecture Registration Exams experience stories and more recently added a podcast, Interview Series. “When young architects, designers, and engineers transition into new roles, there is often no training, and most firms don’t have a plan in place to help guide them. It is a sink or swim situation,” she states. While joining a professional organization can help toward this end, Rossier wanted to create another affordable and easily accessible option. For example, Revit Crash Course educates recent graduates on core functionalities, navigating the interface, creating drafting views and detail components, dimensioning floor plans, editing modeled elements, comments, materials, and more.
