GBH viewers may recognize this new detective drama from the U.K. as an adaptation of the French-Belgian series Astrid that has been aired in recent years. Pioneering singer-songwriter Janice Ian was 15 years old when she released “Society’s Child,” a song about an interracial relationship. While it launched her career and led to friendships with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, it also spurred controversy and drew outrage. She persevered, and for the next six decades, Ian overcame homophobia, industry misogyny, and a life-threatening illness to produce a body of work that has stood the test of time.

Outspoken immigrant, lesbian, and woman of color, Urvashi Vaid, was a leader who helped shape the modernday gay rights movement. She was an expert in gender and sexuality law and was the first woman of color to lead a national gay and lesbian organization.
