That’s why insights from those who were there help paint a fuller picture, as evidenced by the most-read article on MTD’s site this past month. New Toyo CEO sees big opportunities ‘BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS GETTING SUPPLY TO MARKET’
M
ichael Graber, the recently named president and CEO of Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp., says there is high demand for his company’s products. “Our distributors and dealers are asking for more supply and are very optimistic about 2022.” Graber discusses how Toyo plans to meet heightened levels of demand — plus other opportunities the company is pursuing — in this MTD interview.
MTD: Can you describe the performance of Toyo’s overall business in 2021 and during the first half of 2022? What were the bright spots? What have the challenges been? Has Toyo’s business rebounded to pre-pandemic levels? What are you hearing from tire dealers?
four factories supplying tires to the U.S. have increased output to keep up with the unprecedented demand. We are excited for the opening of our passenger and light truck factory in Serbia later this year and expect our fill rates to consistently improve through 2022 and into 2023. We have seen some easing of the ocean freight bottlenecks recently and hope that trend continues. MTD: Can you bring us up to speed on Toyo’s plans to ramp up capacity — and invest in — the Georgia plant? Did the pandemic slow this down or are things proceeding according to the company’s original plans?
Graber: 2021 was a successful year for our business, posting year-over-year unit sales growth and exceeding our targets on revenue and profit. So far in 2022, we are off to a good start and see demand rising for our tires. Our business has continued to exceed pre-pandemic levels and we continue to invest in new and innovative product developments. Our distributors and dealers are asking for more supply and are very optimistic about 2022.
Graber: As mentioned, we have a new factory in Serbia coming online later in 2022. The new plant will provide much-needed supply to the U.S. market and allow us to improve efficiency worldwide. We have continued to invest in White, Ga., with a focus on the North American market.
MTD: How would you describe the current state of Toyo’s passenger and light truck tire supply coming out of its plant in White, Ga.? How about the supply of Toyo commercial truck tires coming out of Japan? How would you describe Toyo’s fill rates right now?
Graber: We certainly see the EV market as a central growth area for Toyo. Our new product development team has been working on our EV product strategy across applications. The market will continue to grow and we are working on innovative new products in the EV segment.
Graber: We have certainly faced the same supply challenges as our competitors due to increased demand and the well-documented stresses on the system. Improving our fill rates to the dealer channel is a central focus of the entire organization and (Toyo’s)
MTD: What are Toyo’s biggest growth opportunities in North America? And what role will Toyo’s tire dealer channel play in that growth?
8
02_MTD_News-Numbers.indd 8
MTD: Right now, electric vehicles (EVs) are a small part of the overall North American car parc. What opportunities exist there for Toyo?
Graber: As mentioned, the continued

growth of EVs is a huge opportunity. We are also focused on the commercial segment, both in TBR products and light truck last-mile delivery applications. Besides the emerging segments, we intend to maintain our position in non-commercial light truck applications by evolving the Open Country product line. In all segments, our dealer partners are critical to growing our brand. We steadfastly believe in listening to our dealers and responding with products and programs to help them be successful. MTD: What’s the biggest challenge facing Toyo at the moment? What can tire dealers expect to see from Toyo during the rest of 2022 and into the new year? Graber: Our biggest challenge is getting more supply to the market. The consistent message we hear (from customers) is “get us more tires.” We hear them and we are committed to improving fill rates, increasing supply and constantly improving our value to their businesses. This will continue through 2022 and beyond. MTD July 2022

he average age of light vehicles in operation in the United States has risen to 12.2 years, marking the fifth straight year the average vehicle age has increased. The data, from S&P Global Mobility — formerly the automotive team at IHS Markit — marks another all-time high for the average vehicle age. And it came as the size of the country’s vehicle fleet recovered The latest data from S&P Global Mobility and added nearly 3.5 million units. shows good trends for tire dealers — S&P Global Mobility says the primary older vehicles that will need service, plus causes of this year’s average vehicle age vehicle miles traveled trends are returning increase are related to the global microchip to pre-pandemic levels. Photo: S&P Global Mobility shortage, combined with continuing supply chain and inventory challenges. With chip supply shortages, new carmakers continue to struggle to ramp up vehicle production. According to the report, “The constrained supply of new cars and light trucks, amid a strong demand for personal transportation, could have influenced consumers to continue operating their existing vehicles longer, as inventory levels for both new and used vehicles were depleted across the industry.” Those same supply chain constraints have also led to a decrease in vehicle “scrappage,” which measures the number of vehicles leaving the vehicle population. “The scrappage volume for the prior year stood at over 11 million and scrappage rate as a percent of vehicles on the road was just 4.2% of the vehicles in operation — the lowest annual rate in the past two decades.” Compare that to the scrappage rate from the previous year, which was more than 15 million units, the highest volume in two decades. At 5.6%, it was the second-highest scrappage rate recorded. As S&P Global Mobility notes, this adds up to “growing business potential for the aftermarket segment.” At the same time, vehicle miles traveled have returned to pre-pandemic levels. In 2021, miles increased by more than 10%. Light vehicles in the U.S. averaged more than 12,300 miles traveled in 2021. Similar figures are expected for 2022.

Tariffs on OTR tires from India will remain
ive years after the implementation of tariffs on OTR tires from India, the U.S. Department of Commerce says it is maintaining the rates set in 2017. That means Indian OTR tire producers and companies that import OTR tires from India will continue to pay countervailing tariffs assigned five years ago. Those rates range from 5.36% for Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT) to 4.72% for ATC Tires Private Ltd. Tariffs are automatically reviewed five years after they’re initially implemented. The process is called a “sunset review.” Parties who have a stake in a particular industry and tariff are given time to request a formal review. In this instance, two parties made that request — Titan International LLC which produces similar products domestically, and the government of India. No tiremakers in India asked for a review. Without the tire producers on board, the Department of Commerce then conducts a smaller-scale review, called an expedited review. The purpose of this review is to determine whether tariffs are still needed to protect the domestic industry. And in this instance, the Department of Commerce has said yes. MTD July 2022

&M Tire Inc. has bought Midtown Tire, a tire wholesaler based in Rochester, N.Y. K&M began operating from the company’s warehouse on May 23. “We’ve had a growing interest in expanding our distribution footprint within the New York market,” says K&M Tire President Cheryl Gossard. K&M Tire operates 32 distribution centers across the U.S. and sells more than 50 brands of tires that cover passenger, light truck, commercial, farm and other segments.
Point S USA invests in new Memphis site Later this year, Point S tire dealers near Memphis, Tenn., will have access to a new, larger warehouse that will also serve as the home base for a new regional headquarters for Point S USA. The new space will provide five times the amount of storage capacity as the group’s existing Memphis warehouses. Point S first entered Memphis and the Midwest through a partnership with another distributor at the end of 2017. Point S eventually bought that distribution company. The group says it now has more than 20 dealers who utilize the Memphis distribution hub “as their primary supply point.” With a larger warehouse, the cooperative will be able to make a “significant investment” in its inventory of truck, OTR, farm and passenger and light truck tires. Point S USA says those larger tire sizes are a “strong component” of its overall business and the capacity to hold them was limited in previous locations. (Point S has been working from two nearby warehouses. ■ MTD July 2022

YOU HAVE A NEED.
YOKOHAMA CREATED A SOLUTION. Moving cargo containers around the world’s ports is a non-stop job—a job that demands precision, stability and no time for downtime. At Yokohama Off-Highway Tires, we listened to your need for a more stable, longerlasting tire for straddle carriers. So we worked with tire dealers, port managers and equipment operators to develop the new Yokohama RR42. Just another way we tap into our global capacity to give our dealers the tires they need to serve their customers.
YOKOHAMA RR42 The premium Yokohama RR42 was designed with heat-dissipating grooves, wear-resistant compound and an extra-tough bead and sidewall package to keep cargo moving on straddle carriers around the world.

Has replacement tire sellout peaked? By
John Healy
ECONOMIC FORCES CONTINUE TO DAMPEN DEMAND
R
ecent tire dealer commentary suggests that demand for passenger and light truck tires fell on a net basis versus May 2021. The net number of respondents to our latest survey who indicated they observed positive demand for replacement consumer tires during May 2022 was minus-33%. By contrast, that number was up by 30% just four months ago. In recent columns, we indicated that tax refund payments had lagged previous years and mentioned that there may be a near-term tailwind in replacement tire sales given these historically delayed refunds. It appears that this scenario has not come to fruition. We note that through May 20, 74% of tax refunds had been issued compared to May 2019, when all tax refunds were issued at the start of that month. The delayed refund payments were not enough to help drive higher unit volume, while tire manufacturer price hikes and inflationary pressures in the broader economy worked to dampen consumer tire spending. Drilling down further, our recent check-in with tire dealers leave us with the view that retail sellout trends have slowed and turned lower year-over-year compared to levels observed during May 2021. Looking more closely at volume during May 2022, we note that no surveyed geographic region experienced year-over-year growth. The Southwest region achieved the strongest performance, but was flat. The Southeast region performed the worst on
a year-over-year basis. We believe that the overall impact of inflation on consumers and pricing actions from tire manufacturers have been the main headwinds recently.
TIER EQUALITY
In an interesting twist, our recent survey of tire dealers indicates that tier-one, tier-two and tier-three tires and brands were in equal demand during May 2022, after tier-one tires took the top spot the previous month. From a high-level view, we believe these tier preference results represent an anomaly and are indicative of the current environment’s volatility, as this scenario is atypical from our historical survey results. We feel this equal level of demand across all three tiers is telling of the health of the consumer across income classes, as inflation is pushing some consumers toward tier-three products, while others in higher income brackets continue to show a preference for more expensive tires.. Over the long run, we believe that more consumers will shift back to tier-two products as they try to strike a balance between performance and value.
RAWS CONTINUE TO RISE
Examining raw material costs, the basket of raw materials needed to produce a common consumer replacement tire rose 33.2% on a year-over-year basis in May 2022 and also slightly increased by 3% on a sequential basis from the prior month. This continues the trend of increasing raw material price

inputs on a year-over-year basis that started at the beginning of 2021. Holding current prices flat would yield a 32.9% year-over-year increase in raw material input costs — up 6.1% from the same period last year. We note that carbon black has seen its price increase on a year-over-year basis for 17 consecutive months, with May posting a 61.6% increase — slightly less than the 66.3% increase that was observed in April 2022, which was the largest carbon black price hike recorded since 2005. Geopolitical instability continues to drive up the price of oil, with May 2022 registering a 66.2% jump. The price of tire reinforcement items continue their upward trend, with a recent year-over-year increase of 39.2%. Meanwhile, the price of synthetic rubber increased 16.8% on a year-over-year basis in May 2022, down just 1% from prices seen during the previous month. And natural rubber prices fell 1.5% on a year-over-year basis.
PAIN AT THE PUMP
We also track miles driven and note that May 2022 showed a 2.7% year-over-year decline in our miles driven momentum index. This compares to a 1% year-over-year drop in April 2022. We feel that sustained pain at the pump — coupled with rising inflation in all areas of consumer spending — is beginning to negatively impact miles driven. We recently noted that pre-pandemic vehicle miles traveled trends showed only five periods during the previous decade in which miles traveled fell for five or more consecutive weeks. This type of decline typically indicates a bottoming-out of our index and that appeared to prove true as May 2022 showed lumpy miles driven trends. ■ John Healy is a managing director and research analyst with Northcoast Research Holdings LLC, based in Cleveland. abor shortage. Shallow talent pool. Lack of qualified applicants. Whatever you want to call it, finding good help is arguably the biggest challenge facing independent tire dealers today. And the largest tire dealerships in the United States are not immune to this problem. In fact, when asked to cite their most significant challenge, many respondents to MTD’s recent survey of the 100 biggest independent tire dealerships in the U.S. — the same survey that’s used to help compile this year’s MTD 100, which starts on page 34 — cited employee recruitment as their most pressing dilemma. Why is this and what are dealers doing to work around the problem? Modern Tire Dealer 100 Market forces push dealers into uncharted waters Top execs discuss tough decisions they’re making The labor shortage is a near-universal problem. But tire dealers are grappling with other challenges, too. Jamie Ward, CEO and president of Cincinnati, Ohio-based Tire Discounters Inc., cites supply chain complications as a major problem. “We’ve always been agnostic when it comes to waving a specific flag or banner,” he says. “We’ve always tried to have direct programs with all of the manufacturers — oftentimes container programs, where the tires come straight to our warehouses. “For us, the challenge has been container shortages. It’s been expensive, whether it relates to what the per-can costs are — having a (container) unloaded in Los Angeles and transported to our warehouse in Cincinnati or another warehouse. “The costs have been a killer. The delays have been a killer. We’ve been seeing poor fill rates. But we outpace that by over-work and also by looking at (different) brands to fill in when others have fallen short. “The problem is, we have certain agreements with certain vendors for commitments at certain volumes. In order for a new supplier to come in, they’re going to have to be able to fulfill those volumes. If they can’t come in strong enough -—with enough of their inventory — we can’t do a deal with them. “There was a brand a few years ago that tried changing its program and we said, ‘Sorry, we’re going to have to let you go.’ It was really disappointing because it’s a brand we had done a lot of business with for a long time.” Ward says Tire Discounters has had to raise its own prices in response to the escalating cost of new tires and other items necessary for operation. “The average cost of goods has skyrocketed with all the price increases (tiremakers) have been pushing out. And it’s not just that. Every single piece of business has spiked from a cost standpoint. We’ve been forced to seriously look at our pricing and raise prices as necessary. That’s a critical part of survival right now. “We’ve seen supply chain shortages before. We’ve seen rising prices before. We’ve seen all kinds of things. But this year, we’re seeing it all — every single piece coming at us. All the darts are (hitting) at once. We’re succeeding, but it’s been a bear.” Don Mead, CEO of Callaghan Tire, which is based in Bradenton, Fla., says supply has been “a huge challenge. But our team has done a great job and we’ve received great support from our suppliers.” Inflation has put pressure on daily operations, says Mead. “We’re getting price increases every three months. This year, in some categories, it’s been 8%, 10% or 12%. “I understand the need for the increases. Our job is to make sure we don’t have a lag between the time we experience (increases) on incoming products” and when Callaghan Tire passes those hikes to its customers. Fuel price spikes have been problematic, as well, he reports. This past May, the dealership — which runs a fleet of road

service trucks — spent $50,000 more in fuel than what it paid during May 2021. “We’ve done more service calls. We’ve spent more money moving tires around. We’re putting more miles on. But that’s still a crazy number. “In a way, you almost have to re-budget every month. One thing I do every month is ask, ‘Where’s our break-even?’ That’s a key piece of information.” Walt Dealtrey, CEO and president of Service Tire Truck Centers Inc., says his company is adding surcharges to road service calls and deliveries in order to counter the high cost of fuel. “We go in with an hourly rate to do the work, so rather than raising our hourly rate we just do a surcharge. The customer knows if the price of fuel ever comes down, at least (we won’t charge) a higher hourly rate. “It’s a matter of telling them — not asking them — via letter, saying, ‘Here’s our surcharge.’ And they’re still calling. We’re still busy.” “We’ve had to raise our service rates 15% or more over the last year,” says Jon Langerak, chairman and CEO of Wonderland Tire Co. “We just started a fuel surcharge. We’ve gotten some complaints and we try to work with the customer. But they’re experiencing this themselves and have had to take similar actions, so I would say overall, our customers have been good about it — understanding that their own costs have gone up.”

But we’ve gone back to our pre-COVID-19 standard where we were very rigorous. “There are all these gimmicks in hiring and recruiting, but at the end of the day, I think people want to work for people. Sometimes I feel like there are a lot of people who are holding out for something different than the entry-level jobs we have in our warehouses and in our retail stores. “We’re trying to emphasize careers, rather than just jobs. “Even at the entry-level, we’re doing our best to show people, ‘If you join us and stay with us, here are the things we’ll do to help your career along and show you some advancement opportunities so you can grow with the company.’ “We try to tell that story during the interview process. Some of our employees have had nice progressions in their careers here and we try to focus on that.

“We’ve changed our wage scale a little bit. For certain positions, we’ve offered some hiring — as well as longevity — bonuses. Over the last couple of months, we’ve offered additional training — making sure we’re doing all that we can to help them do the job most efficiently and safely and make the work environment as good as it can be. “But we’re certainly seeing fewer applicants, especially in entry-level jobs. Those (workers) seem to be more transient than they ever have before. We’re all trying different things. We’re constantly looking at what we’ve done and saying, ‘Well, this didn’t work, so let’s try something different.’ But we haven’t found the formula yet.” Pete Kearing, president, Holyoke Tire Group: “We’re in a good place, people-

Getting better all the time
NEW OWNER OF FRED’S TIRE FOCUSES ON CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT By
Mike Manges
G
oing from owning a lawn care company to operating an independent tire dealership is not a common transition. JR Boenker, the new owner of Fred’s Tire & Auto, a two-location dealership based in Wentzville, Mo., some 40 miles west of St. Louis, Mo., made the switch nearly four years ago. And he’s glad he did. Boenker and his father, Dennis Boenker Sr., bought Fred’s Tire & Auto, which opened 28 years ago, in 2018. JR, who had owned a lawn care and landscaping company prior to the purchase, became sole proprietor of Fred’s Tire & Auto when Dennis Sr. retired this month. The younger Boenker, 37, says he took to selling tires right away. “I like how the customer can walk in and talk to the owner or the general manager” at a tire dealership, he notes. Scott Ray, Freds’ Tire & Auto’s general manager and longtime Boenker family friend, helps JR run the operation. “You can always find Scott and me at one of our shops — open to close,” says JR. “If there’s a problem, we take care of it. It’s not something that has to be drawn out. “I also like that the tire industry is not seasonal. Wintertime slows us down a little bit, but there’s still business coming through the door.” The tire and auto repair service industries’ higher cost of entry is another plus, according to JR. “Anybody can buy a lawn mower and undercut you. But with the way cars are these days, there’s a lot involved.”
52

TIMELY UPGRADES
JR says he and his father inherited an already-successful business when they acquired Fred’s Tire & Auto from original owners, Fred and Lori McGinley. The elder Boenker had run a trucking company and “was looking for another business opportunity. “We had been friends with Scott for a long time and he introduced us to Fred, who had built a very solid business and a very solid customer base.” After taking over, the Boenkers spotted opportunities to tweak several processes at the dealership. The previous owners “did scheduling by writing appointments down in a daily planner,” says Ray, who took the lead on modernizing the dealership’s scheduling system by installing new shop management software. “That had the biggest impact on productivity,” he says. “It increased our car count dramatically and increased our sales.” Both of Fred’s Tire & Auto stores were already situated “in great areas and have a lot of visibility. Our Wentzville location is off of Highway 70,” near a well-traveled exit. “Our St. Charles, Mo., store is in an older historic district, near a community college. MTD July 2022

We get non-stop traffic going by. But you can’t take on more work if you can’t run more work through your shops.” Working with Ray, the Boenkers also updated their showrooms and bought several vehicles — wrapped in Fred’s Tire & Auto branding — to shuttle customers. They also “got a handle on” the operation’s tire and auto parts inventory by tracking incoming and outgoing stock more closely. “We carry heavy movers for normal maintenance, but we don’t carry a wide range,” says Ray. “We don’t want to tie up that kind of money in inventory that will sometimes take months to move.” One thing they avoided was changing the dealership’s name. “We wanted very little fanfare” when the McGinleys exited the business, says Ray. “We didn’t want to create nervousness with customers. “I had worked for a company for more than 30 years and when the owners sold the business, the very first thing the new owners did was change the company’s name and sign. It had a negative effect. We didn’t want to do that at all.” “We kept it low-key because the business already had a great reputation,” says JR. “A lot of people don’t even know that Fred is retired. They still call and ask if Fred’s around.”
JOIN THE CLUB
“We don’t have a large budget for advertising,” says JR. “We’re fortunate we don’t need that. We’re known as an honest, reputable company. When a customer comes in for an oil change, we don’t list another 20 things that need to be taken care of.
54
05_MTD_Feature.indd 54
“If it’s a safety concern, of course, we’ll bring it to their attention. But we’re not here to push the extra stuff that’s not needed.” Auto service makes up a significant portion of Fred’s Tire & Auto’s overall revenue. To increase that percentage, the Boenkers and Ray created Fred’s Car Care Club. Customers pay a flat fee of $49.95 to join. They then receive a card that offers discounts on a variety of auto care services. Cards are non-transferable and must be presented at the time of purchase. And they aren’t traditional punch cards, says JR. “We discovered that if a customer pays for a card, they’re more apt to take it seriously and use it. “If a customer uses our card, it will save them several hundreds of dollars on services — brakes, alignments and more.”
Both of Fred’s Tire & Auto stores are situated in “great areas and have a lot of visibility,” says Ray. “Our Wentzville, Mo., location is off of Highway 70,” near a well-traveled exit. “Our St. Charles, Mo., store is in an older historic district, near a community college. We get nonstop traffic going by.” Photo: Fred’s Tire & Auto
The previous owners of Fred’s Tire & Auto offered “a little key chain that doubled as a punch card,” says Ray. “You punched off five oil changes and got that sixth oil change for free. “Well, we discovered that a lot of customers who used that (card) only came in for oil changes. You can juggle the numbers, but I can tell you that you won’t survive on oil changes alone.” The club is expected to drive more revenue for the dealership, which may expand one of its stores in the near future. New locations also are possible, though JR cautions that “we’re not looking to add next week. But it’s something I’m considering. I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.” ■ MTD July 2022

Mac’s Tire Service offers convenience and ‘comfort’ 24/7 SERVICE, FEMALE EMPLOYEES SET WASHINGTON, D.C. DEALERSHIP APART By
Maddie Gehring
P
am Konde remembers a time before she was the owner of Mac’s Tire Service in Washington, D.C. She recalls working for her father, Percy Pettaway, at the single-location dealership during her summer breaks from high school and making $3 an hour operating the cash register. Konde got her first taste of what running a tire dealership is all about — years before she took over the family business after her father passed away in 2007.
LEADERSHIP ROLE
Percy opened Mac’s Tire in the early 1980s. Konde says he had always owned some automotive-related business, so she and her siblings were introduced to the aftermarket early. When he passed, Konde had to make a decision about the dealership’s future. Her older brother was not interested in taking over and her younger brother was still in college, working on his degree. “Just knowing the sacrifices that my parents had made for so many years, I just felt like I owed it to them to at least give (ownership) a shot,” she says. For the first year-and-a-half after taking over, Konde sat back and observed how the business was run and learned from her employees. “I didn’t know anything about running a business. Working in the summer or on a weekend is completely different than actually running a business.” Her employees helped her learn the ropes until she felt confident to step into the dealership’s top role.
ROUND-THE-CLOCK SERVICE
During her time observing the dealership and seeing how it was run, Konde knew there
56
05_MTD_Feature.indd 56
were elements of Mac’s Tire she wished to keep and expand on. That included keeping the hours of the shop the same. Open 24/7, Mac’s Tire is always available to help customers, including holidays. (The dealership sells passenger, light truck, commercial and industrial tires. It also offers new and used tires and tire-related services, including wheel alignments, tire pressure monitoring system service and more.) Konde says her father decided to operate around-the-clock, knowing that being in a big city there will always be traffic and that cabs, delivery trucks and other vehicles can break down at odd hours of the night. While learning the business, Konde noticed that Mac’s Tire had no tire brand preference. The dealership was content selling all brands, but she noticed that customers were asking for certain products and wanted to build on that momentum. “I was able to sign up to become a certified dealer with a lot of different tire manufacturers.” Mac’s Tire carries Hercules, Goodyear, Dunlop, Firestone and other brands.
FEMALE-FRIENDLY BUSINESS
Konde recognizes that many tire dealerships are owned and operated by men. However, she says that being a woman has not hindered business. “After the surprise or initial shock” on the part of some customers after learning that the company is female-owned, “there is some level of respect that comes in.” Mac’s Tire’s customers want the best service possible for their cars and quickly learn that Konde and her team can provide this. Eight of the dealership’s 20 employees are female, including a tire technician, which is rare to find, says Konde.
Being open round-the-clock gives Mac’s Tire Service a competitive advantage, says Pam Konde, who owns the single-location, Washington, D.C.-based dealership. Photo: Mac’s Tire Service
She did not seek out female employees originally. “We’re looking for dependability and dedication to the company. The technical details can be taught.” Although she says it does not make a difference to male customers, Konde believes employing so many females makes a difference for female customers. Women are more inclined to help femaleowned businesses, she says. And she believes that female employees can quickly establish a comfort level with customers of the same gender. “There is a notion that the automotive industry has a reputation for taking advantage of women. Women can come in here and know they won’t be cheated. It brings a certain level of calmness and comfort.”
‘AN EXTENSION OF CAPITOL HILL’
Konde notes that Mac’s Tire does not have a lot of competitors in its area, other than some big box stores. She says that being an independent tire dealer provides her business with an advantage over these larger operations, as Mac’s Tire is able to provide more personalized service and can address customers’ specific needs. The location of the dealership also will contribute to its future success, Konde believes. The company is very convenient for customers to get to and is now considered “an extension of Capitol Hill,” she says with a laugh. ■ MTD July 2022

The rules of engine diagnostics
THERE’S MORE TO THIS SERVICE THAN JUST ‘CLEARING’ CODES By
Maddie Gehring
I
t’s a rare tire dealership that does not occasionally see a car with an illuminated check engine light. In fact, 65% of respondents to MTD’s latest Tire Dealer Automotive Service Study report that they offer engine diagnostic services. In this article, representatives from diagnostic tool providers discuss key things technicians should remember when trying to figure out why that check engine light is on. Autel: “The most important thing for a technician to do in this instance is not to assume that the check engine malfunction light is caused by a fault in the engine system,” says Maurice Miller, Autel’s director of technical support. “There’s an old adage that vehicle systems tell on each other, meaning a code may be tripped for a system while the actual fault or failure is in another.” Because of this, “it’s always best practice to perform a scan of all the vehicle’s available systems,” he notes. Bosch: “Vehicles are becoming increasingly technical, relying on sensors, electronics, and communication wires to operate appropriately,” says Duane Watson, technical trainer at Bosch. “This poses new complexities to technicians and changes the way technicians perform routine services. “Before performing any diagnostic check, technicians must ensure that their tools are up-to-date with the latest software.” Bosch regularly releases new updates for its diagnostics tools, he adds. “If the software is outdated, it could impact the accuracy of readings and, in turn, make it increasingly difficult to diagnose the actual problem. “Another important thing to remember is that shops are challenged with new, complex systems that could potentially create problems that certain technicians have never encountered. “For example, a vehicle owner might bring their truck into the shop with a complaint or issue and when a technician goes to check and duplicate the problem, it no longer exists. “It doesn’t mean that there isn’t an issue with the vehicle. It means that figuring out the problem will be more complex. “Technicians can face these challenges head-on with proper training and up-to-date diagnostic tools,” according to Watson. Continental: Technicians should always follow the diagnostic process and use the same strategy-based process for every check engine light or drivability concern, says John Sears, a senior member of the Continental technical support team. “At Continental, we call it the three Cs — concern, cause and correction.” Sears recommends the following steps when attempting to diagnose a possible engine-related issue:
58
05_MTD_Feature.indd 58
Technicians should not “assume that the check engine malfunction light is caused by a fault in the engine system,” says Maurice Miller, Autel’s director of technical support. “There’s an old adage that vehicle systems tell on each other, meaning a code may be tripped for a system while the actual fault or failure is in another.” Photo: Getty
1.Talk with the customer and gather information. “Is the problem intermittent or does it occur all of the time? Does it happen when the engine is cold or hot? Did someone else work on the vehicle recently? Don’t be surprised if the customer is not completely honest about this one, especially if they worked on the vehicle themselves.” 2. Verify the concern. “Drive the vehicle,” says Sears. “You can’t fix the problem if it isn’t there while you’re working on it. If the complaint is an intermittent problem, go for a ride with the customer. Their driving style may be different than yours and that may shed some light on the issue.” 3. Perform a quick visual inspection. “Many problems can be found quickly by opening the hood and taking a look around with a flashlight.” 4. Retrieve any DTCs with a scan tool. “ If multiple DTCs are present, you should concentrate on the first one on the list.” 5. Examine scan tool data carefully. “Concentrate only on the critical data related to the DTC or the drivability concern,” says Sears. “This will help narrow the focus to the root cause of the concern. Remember that some driveability concerns will have no DTCs present.” 6. Repair the cause of the concern and verify the repair. “Clear fault codes and drive the vehicle for the correct drive cycles needed — remembering that some fault codes do not set on the first road test. You don’t want to give the vehicle back to the customer only to have the (light) come back on the next day while they are driving it.” ■ MTD July 2022

We’ll give you an additional $5,000 in annual salary for every 2.5% net increase. Your goal for the coming year is to achieve 7.5% net. As a dealership owner, hopefully you provide your team members with a full, printed, monetized run-down of their positions’ benefit packages — outlining your total investment in them as a team member. But we’ll save that conversation for another day. The costs that we’ll discuss in this column are much less tangible, highly behavior-based and often misunderstood. As an owner, you likely project incremental annual increases based on your historicals and what you know lies ahead. Your budgets are built accordingly. TEN Insights new to the game, aren’t privy to the same information and thus probably aren’t aligned with net-based thinking. That’s why closing the knowledge gap between your business goals and your team’s daily activities is key. Fortunately, there’s a simple formula that will shape behavior to improve performance and provide your team members the insight they need to have in order to succeed.
Let’s say that your customer service team gives out $10 oil change coupons five times daily. (These are discretionary discounts — not a part of your marketing campaigns.) They’ve done this for years and customers continue to return. It’s only $50, right? Wrong. At 5% net, you would need an additional $1,000 in sales to break even on these discounts.

If you’re open Monday through Friday, these habits will cost $5,000 in sales weekly and $260,000 annually. The simple process of your customer service team selling from their own back pockets — rather than that of the business — just hit home. And it hurts! Now let’s consider a more serious example. One of your general service techs rips a side mirror off a customer’s car while backing out of a bay. He feels terrible and you take it in stride, paying an $800 repair bill. It’s only $800, right? Wrong. At 5% net, you’ll need $16,000 in sales to overcome the loss. One simple accident like this each month works out to $192,000 in annual sales shrinkage at 5% net. At that clip, with an average repair order of $300, you will need hundreds of additional customers to overcome the losses. The cost of simple errors can really add up. Now let’s say your team loses three sales a day because members haven’t truly dialed in their phone sales skills. Maybe you’ve never invested in a system to help them or maybe they simply aren’t using the tools you’ve provided. Either way, that’s three sales a day. Let’s also assume you’re producing well and your average repair order is $300. That’s $900 in lost sales each day. Being open Monday through Friday, you’re losing $5,400 weekly and $280,000 annually. I’ll let you do the math on the number of customers needed to overcome this loss. It’s not pretty. Hopefully, by this point, the simple, true cost of our daily behaviors — or lack thereof — has begun to set in. You owe it to your team members to make sure they have the tools they need to achieve their goals. Understanding the ins and outs of daily wins and losses is a part of that toolbox. With every member of your team understanding that the cost of a loss or error divided by your net percent is the true cost to your business, you’ll be in a much better position tomorrow than today. Providing your store managers with these insights might make them a bit nervous, but that’s OK. They should be. Explaining the true cost of daily behaviors to your team will make a massive difference and help deliver the truly awesome experience that your customers deserve. ■ Tire and auto industry veteran Randy O’Connor is the executive director TEN (Training and Education Network). How to recession-proof your business
CAR COUNT, PRICE CONSISTENCY WILL BE CRITICAL By
Dennis McCarron
T
his column is not going to predict nor deny if the United States enters a recession this year or next. We can leave that up to the economists. What we can, as an industry, talk about is what to do if a recession becomes a reality. The truth of the matter is that our industry is somewhat recession-resistant. People need to get to work and the American public loves their independent mode of transportation. That being said, traditionally, Americans do not budget for things like car repair or gas. As wallets tighten, people will be forced to make on-the-spot decisions about how to spend what they have or how to use their credit wisely. Historically, auto service items that are not immediately necessary will get clipped from shop tickets. Add-on sales like fuel system service and headlight restoration will be declined more frequently. Items that have longer use intervals — like cabin air filters and differential services — will get extended. This does not mean you should stop bringing those items to the customer’s attention. In fact, it is highly important that customers stay informed of the condition of their vehicles and that they continue to make educated decisions. It is never OK to avoid making a valid recommendation. The reality, though, is that average repair orders (AROs) will likely go down. With the free money that was coursing through the economy the last two years, service advisors were hearing “yes” a lot of time. Most Americans during this period saw their savings increase and credit debt go down. With inflation and a potential recession on the horizon, those savings have started to dwindle.
Start taking actions to allow more vehicles to flow through your bays. The name of the game in this potential scenario is car count, car count, car count. It will be imperative as repair orders dip south that the difference is made up in increased car count. There are several factors that will help. One is that the average age of vehicles on the road today is at a historic high and the availability of replacement vehicles is historically low. Number two, unemployment is low. That means enough people are earning enough income to support fixing and maintaining their vehicles. A potential threat to all of this is stagflation. Stagflation is a drop in economic growth combined with inflation and a sustained increase in unemployment. It is difficult for even economists to predict if stagflation will occur. w w w . M o d e r n T i r e D e a l e r. c o m
06_MTD_Columns.indd 63
So how should your business prepare to focus on car count increases? First, you have to know your numbers. Gather the relevant last couple of years of reports on car count and average repair orders and monitor the current year’s performance versus the last few. Second, start taking actions to allow more vehicles to flow through your bays. While each tire dealership will have a unique plan of attack, advertising will be high on the list. Let people know what services you provide and what hours of operation you offer. Make sure you are staffed as best as you can. This doesn’t necessarily mean adding more people. Everyone reading this column knows the difficulty we all have had in finding talent. It does mean, however, that you should align your advertising with the services your existing staff can do efficiently and expertly. There’s no sense in hiring a second lead technician if you are only doing three engine diagnostics a week. There’s also no sense in advertising cheap oil changes if you don’t have enough general service or entry-level technicians on-hand. Just as critically, avoid the temptation to drastically reduce your prices. We have made significant gains toward equal footing with other trades in the last few years and we shouldn’t shed those gains. If you must lower prices to gain new customers, pick one service and only one service to lower. Keeping your current pricing allows you to compete with other trades for talent. It’s a long-haul fight, but one that is absolutely critical to sustained success. With lowered AROs, we will see vehicles inside shops for shorter times, as less work is being performed. Efficiency is going to be critical. Much the same as restaurants focus on “flipping tables,” we too must focus on flipping bays. Measuring technician efficiency is important, but also measuring the time a vehicle is inside the bay and eliminating excessive downtime — such as extended waiting for parts times or unbilled diagnostic time — is also key. There shouldn’t be a sense of panic in any dealership. There should be preparedness. If we do go into a recession, it is likely to hit other economic sectors harder than ours. But we owe it to our customers and employees to be prepared and take the necessary steps to combat a problem that is largely out of our control. We can’t stop a potential recession, but we can prepare for it. ■ Dennis McCarron is a partner at Cardinal Brokers, one of the leading brokers in the tire and automotive industry (www.cardinalbrokers.com). Mergers and Acquisitions
Meet a dealmaker
CHRIS GARMAN DISCUSSES SUN AUTO TIRE’S M&A STRATEGY, WHY THE M&A MARKET WILL REMAIN HOT AND MORE By
Michael McGregor
C
hris Garman is vice president of corporate development for Sun Auto Tire & Service Inc. His family business, Wilhelm Automotive, was acquired by Sun Auto Tire — then known as GB Auto Service Inc. — several years ago. Garman joined Wilhelm in 2000. Over the years, he worked his way up to becoming president and co-owner of nine, high-volume stores in the Phoenix, Ariz., market. After the sale of Wilhelm, Garman continued with GB/Sun and soon discovered a love for mergers and acquisitions. (In 2021 alone, Sun acquired nearly 12 tire dealerships — the largest being Plaza Tire Service Inc., a 70-plus store dealership based in Cape Girardeau, Mo.) In this MTD exclusive, Garman discusses Sun Auto Tire’s acquisition strategy, why the mergers and acquisitions market will remain hot and more.
tor and they’re willing to make upfront investments to make the company great. And the team they’ve brought in — from our new CEO, Tony Puckett, (to) our chief technology officer, our chief development officer and our chief marketing officer… they’ve just been great additions. We’re really building something special and I think that Leonard Green was kind of the catalyst to make that all happen.
McGregor: Sun Auto really began to accelerate acquisitions, moving into new markets after Leonard Green & Partners became a majority owner last September. I imagine this was not coincidental. What resources does Leonard Green bring to the table for Sun Auto?
Garman: We’ll continue to leverage local Garman: We’re still focusing on the brands. Ramona Tire is a great example. Southwest and the Midwest, adjoining markets to where we’re at. Some opportunities we’ve gotten into kind of stretched our footprint. But our focus is on the current market set we’re in and the adjoining markets around those. And then from a business standpoint, we’re looking at wellthink there are a lot of baby boomer-age owners who run, high-quality, top “I either have no plan to transition, nobody to transition the three or four dealers in business to or that second and sometimes third generation a market. We want to just isn’t interested in the business,” says Chris Garman, be in the tire business, vice president of corporate development for Sun Auto Tire & Service Inc. “They’re looking to retire and move on. Their so having some tire business has never been as valuable as it is today because it’s capacity is important. a very attractive, steady, recession-resistant space.” We need a certain Photo: Sun Tire & Auto Service
Garman: It actually was more coincidental than you think. A deal like Plaza Tire doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. A lot of those were in our pipeline and we had been working on (them) and just happened to transact right after Leonard Green invested in us. The resources that Leonard Green brings to us — capital, credit and experience — gives us the ability to expand. They’ve helped us grow the company by making significant investments in our back office, technology and our M&A team — all across the company. Leonard Green is a long-time inves-

McGregor: How big is your team in corporate development? Garman: Our team is six on the M&A side, which includes financial planning and analysis. And then we’ve got another five people dedicated solely to integration. It totals 11 roles just dedicated to acquiring and integrating acquisitions. McGregor: What is Sun Auto currently looking for in a transaction?
number of bays — at least eight bays — and prefer a medium- to larger-size facility in a good market area. McGregor: Your ideal business mix can be anywhere from 100% service to 100% tires and everything in between? Garman: From an acquisition standpoint, we’re not limiting ourselves to just one or the other. We feel like we’ve proven we can operate both business models and everything in between. And we’ll continue to do that. We’re interested in retail service and tires. We are not focused on commercial or wholesale currently. McGregor: Talk about Sun Auto’s current philosophy on keeping brand names. How does that work and where do you see it going?
MTD July 2022

The 16 stores we bought had a great footprint in their market. The name was firmly established there. We continue to build that by buying smaller tire dealers and rebranding them as Ramona Tire. Our rebrands really come into play where either we have a larger brand that we want to brand it under or we don’t have a dominant brand in a market. Houston is a great example. Louetta Automotive was a smaller brand that we bought and just didn’t have any real market dominance. So we needed a brand. We had used Sun Auto in Texas, so it just made sense to use that in Houston. But by and large, our goal is to get into a market that has a dominant brand that we can leverage and grow that existing brand.
‘We’re interested in retail service and tires. We are not focused on commercial or wholesale currently.’ McGregor: Any advice that you have for a tire dealer who is preparing a business for sale, along with the real estate? Garman: Number one, get your books in order. Clean up your profit and loss statement, clean up your balance sheet and make sure that when somebody comes in to look at your financials that they’re clean and they’re ready to be looked at. Understand that somebody’s going to want to take a deep dive into those financials and the cleaner they are, the easier it is for them to evaluate and give you a fair valuation for your business. From a real estate perspective, make sure your facilities are clean. Good operators keep their places clean and tidy. Think about it as if you’re selling a house. You go in, maybe you stage it — but you make it look nice. So making sure you’re keeping the real estate that way is probably the best advice from a real estate perspective. Then get your leases straightened up and in order. If you’re leasing things, make sure you have long-term leases in place. If you’re thinking about selling your real estate, figure out what value you’re placing on that. w w w . M o d e r n T i r e D e a l e r. c o m

Mergers and Acquisitions Start to think about value and what you want and need from the business and/or the real estate in order to sell, exit and retire. Be realistic about what they’re worth. McGregor: What do you see coming down the pike with regards to online tire sales, mobile tire installation and new business models that could impact tire dealers? Garman: I definitely think that online tire sales and mobile installation are going to be a bigger part of the business. There’s this segment of our population that’s going to demand it. I think tires are going to be a bigger part of our future and that battery sales and service will be a bigger part of the future of cars as the industry evolves. Everybody’s going to have to go from the traditional service model that we’ve all operated on for a hundred years and more to servicing a completely different type of automobile that not many of us see in our stores today. And customers are going to want things differently, right? They’re connected as they drive. And we’re going to have to be able to provide better, faster and more convenient service. That’s where I think online sales and mobile installations and those sorts of things just make it more convenient for the customer. We’re going to have to do that to be successful in the future. McGregor: The strength of the tire and service business was shown during COVID-19. What do you think some of the long-term impacts of COVID-19 will be on the tire and service business? Garman: I do believe, to some degree, it’s had an impact on exits. Some people looked at it and thought they don’t want to go through this again. I also think from an operations perspective, there’s going to be some changes — different expectations from customers (and) different levels of service. COVID-19 gave rise to the work-athome industry that I don’t think existed as strongly as it did in the past. And it’s created opportunities for all employees to move into different careers and to be able to work from home and live wherever
66
06_MTD_Columns.indd 66
Sun Auto Tire made nearly a dozen tire dealership acquisitions last year, including Plaza Tire Service Inc., which operated more than 70 locations across a multi-state area. “A deal like Plaza Tire doesn’t happen overnight,” says Garman. Photo: Plaza Tire Service
they want to live. And that shift from urban to rural living, I think, is going to impact where you put stores and how you can hire employees. McGregor: I see a big shift in weekend business... Garman: We saw a big shift in that just through COVID-19 because with work from home, people no longer needed a car to drive to the office. You could drop (a vehicle) off on Wednesday morning or Thursday morning and pick it up Thursday night. It didn’t matter. You didn’t need it today. And so again, this convenience factor and where the business is, I think, have shifted. Those downtown (dealerships) that are (near) high-rise office buildings that are empty now are going to struggle a bit. McGregor: Let’s talk about current market activity. What do you attribute this high level of dealmaking to and do you see it continuing for a while? Garman: One, I think there are a lot of baby boomer-age owners who either have no plan to transition, nobody to transition the business to or that second and sometimes third generation just isn’t interested in the business. They’re looking to retire and move on. Their business has never been as valuable as it is today because it’s a very attractive, steady, recession-resistant space. And so that makes it attractive for all of the investment money that’s sitting
on the sidelines. They’ve got to put it to use somewhere and we’ve made a good spot to put it in. And I think that’s what’s driving a lot of the activity and I don’t think that’s going to change. I do think that values are leveling out and maybe even softening a bit and we might have hit a peak in valuations, at least for a little while. But the values are still really good and people are still able to retire based on what they’ve built. Also, I just don’t see other players in the market going away. We’re going to continue to be active and aggressive in the market and our competitors don’t seem to be slowing down. McGregor: As Sun expands into other regions and across the country, is there a concern that the company’s growth may exceed its current capabilities running these new acquisitions from your headquarters in Tucson, Ariz.? Garman: No, that isn’t a concern. One, there are lots of other large tire and service retailers that successfully operate a lot more stores than we do. And we don’t see any reason why we can’t operate even more successfully. We have a team in Tucson, we’ve got a team in Tempe, Ariz., and we’ve got teams spread out in other places. ■ Michael McGregor is a partner at Focus Investment Banking LLC (focusbankers.com/automotive/tire-andservice). TPMS
Honda Accord - 2018-2021 TPMS SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The indirect tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) establishes a baseline tire pressure reading using the wheel speed sensors and indirectly monitors tire pressure to detect pressure loss in any of the four tires. The low tire pressure/TPMS indicator turns ON and appears when the tire pressure of any tire or tires falls below the specified threshold or a system malfunction is detected. The system is controlled by the vehicle stability assist (VSA) modulator-control unit. The TPMS consists of the following primary components: • VSA modulator-control unit; • Wheel speed sensors; • Outside air temperature sensor; • System indicator
CONTROL
The indirect TPMS establishes a baseline tire pressure reading using the wheel speed sensors and indirectly monitors tire pressure to detect pressure loss in any of the four tires. The system does not monitor the tires when driving at low speed. The system uses these two methods to determine loss of tire pressure: • Wheel speed differential; • Peak tire resonance
WHEEL SPEED DIFFERENTIAL
When monitoring tire pressure using the wheel speed differential method, the TPMS module compares the speed of the wheels in three different configurations, as seen in Fig. 1: Tire diameter shrinks as the tire deflates, causing the wheel speed to increase. If the difference in wheel speeds exceeds the threshold, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator turns ON, as shown in the diagram in Fig. 2.
PEAK TIRE RESONANCE
Peak resonance frequency value learned during calibration becomes the initial value. The peak resonance frequency method compares the initial peak resonance frequency value of the two front tires and the present peak resonance frequency value of the two front tires and detects reduced pressure of the tires. If the present peak resonance value drops below the threshold, the low tire pressure/ TPMS indicator turns ON, as shown in Fig.2.
Photo: Honda
Resonance frequency is corrected based on the outside air temperature sensor information because resonance frequency is changed by the outside air temperature. The TPMS module compares the peak resonance values learned at calibration. If the value drops below the threshold, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator turns on.
TEMPORARY SUSPENSION
Certain situations — such as when the vehicle is turning, accelerating, decelerating or braking — will temporarily prevent the system from monitoring tire pressures due to varying tire loads.
CALIBRATION
A calibration process is required for the TPMS module to learn the initial rolling radii of the four tires and peak tire resonance values. The calibration procedure must be performed any time the tire pressures are adjusted or when the tires are rotated or replaced. The TPMS calibration procedure is initiated by doing customization. Upon the completion of system calibration, vehicle mileage and calibration data is stored in the VSA modulator-control unit. If larger diameter accessory wheels have been installed, the TPMS system needs to be calibrated to recognize the new wheel size. This procedure is performed using the HDS threshold rewriting function.
TPMS SYSTEM DESCRIPTION - SYSTEM DIAGRAM
The TPMS module is integrated into the VSA modulator-control unit. In order to control tire pressure monitoring, the TPMS module first receives inputs from the VSA system, which includes the wheel speed sensors, the hydraulic pressure sensor, the PCM, the SRS unit, the EPS control unit and the gauge control module, as noted in Fig. 3. Then the TPMS module sends commands to the gauge control module through the VSA modulator-control unit and issues warnings to the driver.

TPMS control unit. This system has an indicator on the gauge control module. If the system detects low tire pressure in any of the four tires, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator comes on. It will stay on until calibration procedure starts. CHECK SYSTEM (TPMS) • If a problem in the system is detected, the VSA indicator comes on, and the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator comes on after blinking for about 75 seconds; • If VSA falls into error mode, TPMS also falls into error mode and stops all operation. If TPMS is calibrating, the calibration will be suspended. If the system is OK, the low tire pressure/ TPMS indicator should come on when the vehicle is turned to the ON mod, and then go off two seconds later. If it does not, there is a problem with the system.
CONDITIONS FOR DATA REJECTION
Even if the system is normal, calibration or deflation detection is not performed during the following conditions:
• The brake pedal is pressed; • The vehicle is stopping; • While going slower than 22 mph or cruising over 65 mph; • Short turn, rapid acceleration and/or hard braking; • Conditions where the right and left wheels are rotating at different speeds, like when driving on sand, loose gravel, snow, ice or extremely rough roads; • When the ABS, EBD, TCS, or VSA controls are operating; • Gentle cornering radius; • Driving on a steep slope.
CONDITIONS WHERE TPMS CAN NOT OPERATE NORMALLY
In the following cases, false warning might occur or deflation might not be detected: • Non-recommended tires are used; • Tires with different wear levels; a different brand, model and type; or different sizes are used; • All four tires are not replaced to the recommended tires at once; • Tires have been calibrated with non-
recommended tire pressure; • Temporary spare tires or tire chains are mounted; • When driving on sand, loose gravel, snow, ice or extremely rough roads; • With trailer towing or a roof carrier; • With a very heavy load or an extremely unbalanced load; • Rapid deflation, like a tire burst.
CHANGE OF THE TIRE PRESSURE THRESHOLD
When changing tire/wheel size, it may be necessary to adjust the tire pressure threshold using the HDS. If it is not adjusted, the system may not operate normally. This operation can be done through the ABS/TCS/VSA menu in HDS.
TPMS SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING:
Calibration Cannot Be Started • If any gauge control module or VSA system DTCs are indicated, do the troubleshooting for these DTCs first; • Check the number of miles on the gauge control module. After proceeding TPMS

TPMS RESET PROCEDURES
• Ensure the tire pressure is properly adjusted to match the pressure on the door jamb label before doing the calibration; • The calibration begins when the calibration is selected through the center display. The calibration is completed after driving in an ideal driving condition (22 to 65 mph), driving steadily without much acceleration or deceleration, for about 20 minutes. Full functionality of the system cannot be performed properly if the calibration is not completed. • Do the TPMS calibration after completing the following items: • Adjust the tire pressure; • Rotate the tires; • Replace the tire (s); • Update the VSA modulator-control unit; • Replace the VSA modulator-control unit. • Calibration check method. Check if the calibration is completed by doing the following items: • Stop the vehicle and shift into neutral (M/T) or P or N (A/T, CVT) position/ mode; • Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode; • Turn the vehicle to the ON mode and wait to see the low pressure/TPMS indicator come on for two seconds and then off; • Do not drive the vehicle and wait for 45 seconds, as-is; • If the calibration is completed, the indicator does not come on. If the calibration
is not yet completed, then the indicator comes on for two seconds and goes off. The calibration check process gets interrupted if the vehicle moves. Do the troubleshooting if the indicator does not go off after two seconds, keeps blinking or stays on when the vehicle is in the ON mode. The vehicle must be stopped with the transmission in neutral (M/T) or P or N (A/T, CVT) position/mode. If the “Calibration failed to start” message appears, repeat steps six and seven. If the message appears again, do the TPMS symptom troubleshooting.
TPMS - CALIBRATE WITH DISPLAY AUDIO TYPE (8-INCH SCREEN):
1. Make sure the tires are inflated to the tire pressure listed on the door jamb label; 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode; 3. Press the HOME button of the center display; 4. Select SETTINGS; then VEHICLE; then TPMS CALIBRATION; and CALIBRATE.
TPMS CALIBRATE WITH COLOR AUDIO TYPE (7-INCH SCREEN):
