EXISTING CONDITION The building had remained vacant for years after the closure of its original cinema function. Its historic façade, existing structure and traces of local use became the starting point for an adaptive reuse strategy. The challenge was to bring the building back into everyday use while preserving its architectural character.
DISCOVERING THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE During demolition, the original brick vault and structural roof trusses were revealed. These existing elements became an important reference for the new architectural language, informing the curved roof and façade
PRESERVE THE ENVELOPE, TRANSFORM THE INTERIOR The design preserves the historic envelope, including the original vault and stone façade, while reorganizing the interior into a contemporary retail environment. The main challenge was to integrate modern retail requirements — circulation, refrigeration, signage and vertical transportation — without compromising the architectural identity of the existing building.
ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY The restored building maintains the original stone articulation and arched openings at ground and first-floor levels. The new domed roof follows the line of the historic vault, creating a contemporary intervention connected to the existing architectural character.

AN ATRIUM AS THE SPATIAL ANCHOR The escalators form the central element of the store's circulation, connecting the two retail levels while creating visual continuity through the full height of the space. Warm oak paneling and brass-toned lighting introduce warmth and contrast against the black steel fixtures.soften the otherwise industrial palette of black steel fixtures.
MATERIAL DIALOGUE Modular black-finished shelving and refrigeration units are combined with warm oak wall paneling to create a balanced material palette. The contrast between contemporary retail fixtures and warm natural materials reinforces the relationship between the new interior and the building's historic character.

The layout organizes living, dining, kitchen and private areas around a central circulation zone, creating clear spatial relationships between shared and private spaces.
The living area is designed as an open and connected social space, visually extending toward the garden through large glazed openings. Warm timber, natural stone and neutral upholstery create a soft contrast between the architectural envelope and furniture elements.
The kitchen combines functional storage with an integrated dining counter, creating a compact and cohesive social space. Natural stone, wood veneer, textured fabric and brass details establish a warm contemporary material language.

The modular concrete sofa units utilize a precise, gravity fit peg connection, where hardened steel dowel pins (precision diameter, e.g., 10mm) align perfectly with matched, close-tolerance drilled holes. This purely mechanical system requires zero fasteners, using the sofa’s own weight to secure the flush-mating surfaces in perfect alignment.
