King Felipe to inaugurate ISE 2023 today

ISE is honoured to welcome King Felipe VI of Spain for the official inauguration of ISE 2023. The Royal Party will be making a tour of the exhibition from 11:30 this morning, visiting each of the halls and stopping at a number of stands. He will also visit IOT Solutions World Congress in Hall 4.

Let the immersive experience begin

ISE 2023 opens its doors today with plenty to keep visitors engaged as they roam the show floor at Fira Grand Via, including an extensive conference programme, new show floor features and high-level keynotes to check out.

New for this year is the ISE Content Production & Distribution Summit, which is complemented by a dedicated Technology Zone in Hall 6.

Mike Blackman, managing director of

Integrated Systems Events, said content production and delivery has “always been at ISE, but we’ve never focused on it before”. This is partly a response to Spanish exhibitors and visitors, who are particularly focused on these areas. Blackman added that Hall 6 “has got a lot to be excited about… Indeed, the whole show has a lot of excitement.”

Blackman praises ISE’s Spanish boost

Mike Blackman, managing director of Integrated Systems Events, spoke yesterday about the incredible impact that the support of Spanish institutions is having on ISE. He also revealed that today’s inauguration and tour by King Felipe VI will be followed by a visit from president Pere Aragonès of Catalonia tomorrow.

“It’s a fantastic sign of recognition and of the importance Spanish institutions place on ISE,” he added. “We’ve never had this buy-in from any other city or region, they’re all getting behind us.”

In fact, this year’s ISE is the biggest ever in terms of floor space. “This is a record, with 56,867sqm (net), not including aisles and space between the halls,” Blackman revealed.

There’s also been a noticeable bounce back from Covid-hit 2022, with 1,055 exhibitors here in total compared to 1,300 at the last Amsterdam show. “We haven’t seen a full rebound, but it’s a substantial growth over last year, when we only had 800,” he said.

The big growth areas are audio, content production and virtual studios.

There are eight new Audio Demo Rooms on the lower floor of Hall 8, where companies can show off their equipment without annoying the neighbours. There is also a new outdoor audio demo area between Halls 5 and 7 and a

Content Production & Distribution Zone in Hall 6.

ISE is also having an impact on Catalonia’s wider AV industry, with eight companies having set up here as a result of the show. In addition, the local government is establishing start-up creative facilities at Palo Alto and the Three Chimneys (Tres Xemeneies) project where an AV campus is being built with EU, local and private funding. In addition, a project focusing on training and education in the sector has started in the area around the Fira. ISE is helping out through its own start-up section of the show – the Discovery Zone – something it has had for ten years. “If we encourage small companies to grow we will all benefit long term,” said Blackman. “It’s like a circular economy.”

Let the immersive experience begin

(continued from front cover)

For inspiration from industry leaders, come and listen to the high-level keynotes being delivered by BK Johannessen from Epic Games today, Stephen Nuttall, the America’s Cup head of television, on Wednesday, and Fran Chuan, CEO and co-creator of InnoQuotient, on Thursday.

A mix of conferences and summits will take place throughout the week. In particular, Daryl Friedman, CEDIA president and CEO, noted that CEDIA’s Smart Home Technology Conference and Smart Home Technology Stage are highlights for the association at ISE 2023.

Traverse the upper-level walkway between Halls 2 and 3 and you’ll encounter the Sensory Tunnel, an experiential audiovisual installation. Enclosed by flexible plastic doors, the low-light hazy atmosphere and soundscape is regularly pierced by lasers from parallel lines of emitters. “ISE wanted to do something between the pavilions to entertain showgoers and we decided to create this installation,” said Toni Ferré, founder and creative designer of Barcelona collective Haus of Color. “We composed the music piece and we worked with Onionlab [a multidisciplinary studio located in Barcelona] who created the lighting, controlled by data.”

“These are full of informative sessions and demonstrations about future technology and ways to grow your business. ISE is the perfect opportunity for people to meet and exchange knowledge from each other,” Friedman said.

Meanwhile, Dave Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA, urged visitors: “Don’t just say, ‘wow, we’re back’. Rather say ‘wow, look at where we’re going’.”

He continued: “So much has changed in our lives over the last couple of years. Look at how we take what we’ve experienced, layered upon what we all know is an extraordinarily powerful experience of being at a gathering like this and put both of those together to create something that never existed before. That’s what this week is about for me.”

Waiting for the big moment

Dave Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA, is certainly no stranger to trade shows, but speaking to the ISE Daily on the AVIXA Xchange Live stand in Hall 3 during the buildup, his excitement ahead of the grand opening of ISE 2023 is evident.

“When we open the doors on the first morning and the crowd rushes in, funnelling in through the turnstiles, there’s a buzz in the air and all of our exhibitors are lined up and ready,” he said. “I love this event in particular, because there’s 20 languages being spoken at once as people walk through the door.”

“It’s this moment of gathering, this moment of community, and a realisation of hope and anticipation; I get a high off that moment, at every event,” he added.

Labuskes notes that what ISE offers

is something that can’t be replicated elsewhere; access to the rest of the ecosystem. “So much of our industry is dependent upon collaborating between multiple technology developers,

Experts link up for interactive stream

Panasonic is hosting a multi-platform interactive live stream at ISE today with industry experts holding forth on important industry topics and plenty of opportunities to question the speakers. Those taking part include Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events; Simon Kentish, CEO, Frameless UK; Jan Markus Jahn, head of media entertainment and Hartmut Kulessa, senior manager marketing visual, both Panasonic Connect Europe.

The event will be streamed on Panasonic Connect’s LinkedIn and YouTube channels at 17:00 (CET).

“IP-based transport of audio, video and associated data offer a lot of benefits for the AV industry, such as scalability to support any video and audio formats with multichannel distribution over LAN/WAN and cloud. It will be the foundation for new business models too,” said Jahn. “Still, we are facing many challenges, such as robustness, network management, network security and interoperability between manufacturers, but in the long run it will entirely replace today’s infrastructure.”

Panasonic is showing fully IP-based production from recording to content visualisation, with its IT/IP-based Kairos platform at the centre of the workflow.

Kentish will be talking about how Frameless, a new digital immersive attraction in London offering a “multi-dimensional art experience” was created. It “is receiving rave reviews and uses more than 50 Panasonic high-brightness projectors to recreate some of our greatest artists’ works in astonishing ways,” he stated.

“Panasonic’s virtual stage is part of one of the main themes of the show, so I expect we will talk a lot about that,” added Blackman. —DAVID FOX connect.panasonic.com

manufacturers and solutions. This is the place where those relationships can be discovered, nurtured and realised,” he added. “You can’t do that on a webpage or a webinar, you have to do that here.”

The ISE 2023 conference programme, produced by AVIXA and CEDIA, ranges across topics from smart buildings to content creation.

“There was a recognition and realisation by all parties involved that we can deliver relevant content using relationships we already have with speakers, with subject matter experts, with publications, and the show itself,” added Labuskes. “We can focus on making sure [the conference programme] is aligned with the strategy of the show’s growth, the industry’s needs and the exhibitors’ expectations.”

Part of the enhanced content offering is AVIXA Xchange Live. “It’s really engaging, and the people that participate in the conversations are some of the most innovative and brightest minds in the industry,” said Labuskes.

Planning a bright future

The AV industry has been hit by a global labour shortage, exacerbated by the pandemic, and CEDIA is doing something about it.

On Wednesday, Daryl Friedman, CEDIA global president and CEO, will unveil a major workforce initiative as the centrepiece of a three-year growth strategy.

“One of the things I heard a lot about when talking to members is the need for labour,” Friedman explained. “So, we’re addressing that with a global workforce initiative which will see us go into schools in partnership with our members to help recruit the next generation. We’ve put together a great presentation toolkit that will help us reach a potential 100,000 new integrators.”

The possibilities of a career in AV and smart home installation may not be apparent to many 16- to 18-year-olds, but CEDIA has done its homework.

“These young people lived through the pandemic and as a result of that experience – studies have shown – they don’t just want to earn a paycheck, they want meaningful

New Wave of remote management capabilities

work. CEDIA has a great story to tell.”

He added: “Graduates can work with some of the most innovative technologies on the planet, they can receive training without having to get into college debt, and we can offer them jobs tomorrow because we’re hiring. They also get to go into people’s homes and make them happy. Our members are the best possible ambassadors to tell that story.

“If members can make an investment in their employees through our training it will be a bond to help them retain talent and upskill the entire industry.”

At ISE 2023, CEDIA has a packed programme, including the Smart Home Technology Conference in the CC1 rooms. It is also hosting the Smart Home Technology Stage in Hall 2, where sessions will explore how future technologies will impact business, and share best practice on how to run a business.

At the CEDIA Annual Meeting on Wednesday, Friedman will expand on the organisation’s strategic aims to increase its presence among adjacent

trades such as the design and build community as well as among consumers.

“We want CEDIA certification to mean a lot to the end user,” said Friedman.

“We’ll explain how we’re making an investment in new markets and expanding CEDIA’s reach around the world.”

Where art and music meet technology

Coda Audio is unveiling a new concept in architectural audio with the launch of its installation system, Space by Coda, here at ISE. The company is inviting visitors to experience where art and music meet technology in Audio Demo Room E4 in an immersive on-site experience.

The company says visitors will hear 3D spatial audio from French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, while also seeing an art gallery featuring artworks from renowned French abstract painter Eric Decasto, with both artists at ISE for the launch event. What visitors won’t see are the 32 invisible immersive speakers and 101sqm of acoustical treatment, including 264 absorbers and 16 diffusors, that make up the system. Space by Coda is a framework that hosts any number of 70mm-deep speaker units and acoustic panels. Speakers range from the 60x60cm M1 panel with a single 10in driver to the 120x120cm M4 with four drivers. Diffuser panels are 60x60cm, while absorber panels are available in all sizes. The slimline panels can be covered with anything from large-format artworks to projector screens for mixed media. Visually flexible and acoustically transparent, Space by Coda was developed to encourage architects and

interior designers to design versatility into any space.

“Space panels can create any experience in an environment that already exists,” said Coda Audio sales and marketing director David Webster. “With traditional speakers, audio is destructive to visuals, and vice-versa. Speakers must be hidden away in corners, which can look ugly and cause dispersion issues. Space panels can be flat against the wall and are both visually and acoustically transparent.”

Quantum leap in efficiency

The latest Pixera developments are being presented for the first time at ISE. According to AV Stumpfl, the new multi-user workflow features will allow media server operators to be much more flexible and efficient when working on complex installations or show environments.

Multiple Pixera director licences can now be synced, with users able to choose between different levels of granularity when working within a multi-user scenario.

Complete projects or single project parts, such as warpings or timelines, can be shared in real time. Should they wish to, users can also choose to share every single editing action between the connected systems.

12G-SDI I/O support, a 10GBps default data read rate and five configurable PCIe 4.0 slots are some of the key system features of AV Stumpfl’s new high-end server for 4K and 8K playback.

Harry Gladow, executive director for Pixera at AV Stumpfl, said: “The ability to flexibly share project tasks between multiple users simultaneously is a great advantage and saves valuable time. One operator can be in charge of programming the main timeline, another can handle the live inputs and another operator might take care of the general content handling; all working at the same time. For many projects this will be a quantum leap in terms of efficiency.”

Building on the technology developed for the new multi-user features, the Pixera team is also introducing additional backup solutions at ISE. Visitors can discover the latest Pixera control features, which include tracking modules and a new preset module. —ADRIAN PENNINGTON www.avstumpfl.com

CEDIA Business Toolkit offers essential business knowledge

CEDIA’s Business Toolkit is a collection of resources to support integrators in developing their integration businesses. With so much focus on the design and technical aspects of integration, the operational end of running a successful company can often get overlooked. It is for this reason that CEDIA has worked with Leslie Shiner, owner of The Shiner Group, to develop the Business Toolkit. Featuring six white papers and accompanying spreadsheets, business owners can ‘go in and play’ with the information using their own numbers and figures.

The six white papers are:

› Developing a Chart of Accounts for Integrators

The information contained in this white paper explains the concepts of the Chart of Accounts, along with a recommended structure that is specific to this industry to help integrators successfully manage the financial aspects of their business

› Understanding Labour Costs

There is a large gulf between the amount paid per hour to a technician, and their billable rate to the customer. This difference must account for the many other expenses required to maintain and equip installation staff, while also covering unproductive hours, and contributing to overhead and profit. This white paper explores how to calculate these costs and labour burden rates, and how to track employee productivity that is key to project and financial management

› Pricing Using Markup & Margin ‘Markup’ and ‘margin’ are terms used daily by anyone selling goods and services. They are often used interchangeably, although they are quite different. Using the wrong one can be very costly! This white paper discusses definitions, formulas and advice on how to properly calculate prices to ensure an appropriate amount of profit

› Change Order Management

Change orders are a typical feature of project management. Changes inevitably lead to altered costs, and who pays for those costs — the integrator or the client — can be the difference between expenses blowing out or providing a profit opportunity. Additionally, how these changes are managed is important in maintaining rapport with the client. This white paper explores the crucial process of change order management, providing advice for sustained or even increased profitability

Creating a Breakeven Analysis

Breakeven is an important concept in understanding the financial activity of a business, drawing a line between profit and loss. Creating a breakeven analysis need not be a complicated task, and with some know-how and simple maths, can even be used as a tool to set profit goals. This white paper covers the principles of breakeven, with insight into a simple formula and its use with various scenarios of revenue, margin and costs to help simplify financial management for business owners

› Creating a Financial Dashboard

Financial management for increased profitability is one of the most important financial functions in the day-to-day running of a business. All

of the required information can be found in the financial statements, but that requires a lot of filtering and interpretation for effective use. The solution is to create a Financial Dashboard to show all the key metrics that are required for efficient management of cash flow and profitability. This white paper explains the recommended structure and reasonings for creating such a beneficial tool

Smart buildings: The best is yet to come

The Smart Building Conference (SBC) has been an important part of ISE for more than 10 years, always addressing the latest issues in the built environment. A decade on and there’s no shortage of talking points for today’s event, according to conference chair Bob Snyder.

“For SBC, I have too many important topics, too big a waiting list for speakers, and we run out of time when talking about smart buildings,” he says.

This year’s theme is ‘The Best Smart Tech is Yet to Come’. “We want to remind delegates that all the technologies we’ve talked about for years are finally all converging into realities… and as these fingers of technology learn to work together, they become more like a hand than separate fingers,” Snyder explains.

So, which technologies are currently dominating the conversation? Snyder cites disruptive digital, automation and sensor technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), IoT and data analytics.

automation, and an improved working environment for occupants,” Snyder continues. “Until 2020, the emphasis of smart buildings systems, including building automation, was mainly managing the physical facility. Smart buildings can use connected devices to measure everything from temperature, lighting, air quality, noise, vibration and occupancy levels. AI-powered systems can recommend changes to facilities management and allow building management to be more predictive.”

Companies are even changing the job descriptions of facility managers to include mandating smart health for buildings. “I think you can easily say today that being smart means being healthy,” he says.

On the agenda

The conference itself will feature individual presentations alongside panel discussions, including an opening panel debating the ‘The Best is Yet to Come’.

Other speakers include Passive Logic CEO Troy Harvey, and Erik Ubels, owner and senior consultant at MetisReal. Ubels will deliver a thought-provoking presentation entitled ‘Smart Buildings: The whole story’.

“By 2026, the number of sensors deployed in smart buildings will exceed 1 billion,” he reveals. “As a result, IT and OT [operational technology] will move even closer to a single network as big data, AI and digital twin technology change the building network landscape.

“Machine learning and AI will make more use of sensors and IoT for modern buildings, automating how and when energy is used inside buildings today, conditions which have only gotten more complicated.”

While it took a pandemic to highlight health concerns, healthier buildings are now much more of a concern and the industry understands the value of monitoring indoor air quality and other health-related conditions.

“Buildings deploying smart technologies will triple by 2026 because operators and owners want lower energy costs, healthier buildings, more control and

“More than one session will include cloud IoT connectivity and the role of edge computing,” Snyder continues. “We’ll also have discussions on gamechanging technology to improve indoor air quality. And we’ll be bringing together data, people and buildings for environmental, social and governance compliance.”

“I can’t imagine a better way to get an overview of the built environment, which is changing rapidly and getting even smarter,” says Snyder. “Additionally, SBC gives an opportunity to see which parts of smart building might be interesting to add to your business, and gives you access to other integrators who have figured out their roles.

“Smart Building Conference is the right place to meet thought leaders, vendors and integrators.”

IPMX continues to expand at ISE 2023

AV-over-IP had a strong year in 2022, with the pro-AV industry experiencing a significant uptick in global installations based on the SMPTE ST 2110 open standards. Proprietary protocols also continued to expand, suggesting the market will see many different technologies co-exist for quite some time as the move from baseband infrastructure to IPbased media infrastructure continues. IPMX, which consists of SMPTE ST 2110 plus a small number of new open specifications published by AMWA and VSF, also made great progress in 2022.

One area where it has immediately shown its value is in the live events space; not just for arenas and stadiums, but also for enterprises, governments and higher education. In these spaces, live production equipment from the broadcast world gets mixed with equipment from the pro-AV

world. In recent history, it’s been a trivial step to convert SDI to HDMI to send signals from broadcast equipment into a pro-AV infrastructure. It has been equally easy to convert HDMI signals to SDI to add PC content or other pro-AV media into the live production equipment. However, the migration of both types of equipment to AV over IP (AVoIP) has introduced new problems. SMPTE ST 2110 has adequately provisioned for the migration of SDI to IP, including maintaining synchronisation of sources (SDI) as well as synchronisation on the network (PTP). But PTP often isn’t required on AVoIP networks in pro AV. So, thus far, the HDMI-to-AVoIP migration has often been performed without compatible media essence or PTP in the pro-AV equipment.

IPMX is the first set of standards that effectively deals with this. It’s based

directly on SMPTE ST 2110, which means the media essence is compatible. But IPMX also works perfectly for AVoIP on standard asynchronous networks. The portability of media between broadcast equipment, pro-AV equipment, SMPTE ST 2110 networks, and asynchronous pro-AV networks is something that IPMX is helping to achieve, as well as the HDCP key exchange protocol using a common open specification, and robust compatibility between IPMX-based hardware and software running on PC-based equipment.

Inge Govaerts, director of corporate communications and events, Barco, said: “We know visitors expect a lot from us; not only for the products on display, but also the way we present them. Last year our entertainment division lit up the stand with a diamond projection mapping [pictured right]. This year, we are going even bigger; our 360° experience set-up will literally immerse you into Barco’s portfolio.”

Solutions include a new addition within the company’s ClickShare range, the Barco RigiFlex wall, and the flagship LED videowall product TruePix, which is on display in the control rooms section of the stand. Also being showcased is the company’s corporate learning solution weConnect, with demonstrations available to be booked at the stand throughout the week. —JAMES MCKEOWN www.barco.com

Residential audio: Immerse yourself

The recent story of residential audio has been characterised by several significant plot-lines. Perhaps the most important in terms of its market share and global reach has been the growing adoption of immersive audio systems; ranging from basic soundbars to multi-speaker installations. Simultaneously, there has also been a quiet revolution taking place in connectivity and system management, with homeowners taking advantage of new, powerful platforms that deliver more flexible control of their domestic audio set-ups than ever before.

Residential audio has always been well represented at ISE, and the 2023 show is no exception. Hall 2 is the location of

the Residential & Smart Building Zone, and so visitors can expect to see many of the leading names here, including Artcoustic, Focal, Monitor Audio and Trinnov Audio. Attendees should also make time to explore the Multi-Technology Zone (Halls 3 and 5), where a number of broadly-based audio companies, such as Biamp and Shure, can be found. For those keen to go deeper and find out more about the future of audio in the domestic sphere and beyond, the Smart Building Conference runs today from 10:30-17:15 in room CC5.1 and the Smart Home Technology Conference runs from 31 January to 2 February in the CC1 rooms.

Can technology solve the challenges of hybrid work?

The great remote work experiment worked better than many had expected, but there is still uncertainty over the best long-term model for working patterns. While having the option to work from home has proven to be useful for many employees, at least some of the time, there are lingering questions around how to maintain company culture, how to come up with new ideas, and how to train people without in-person contact. While many vendors in the AV space are trying to solve these issues with AI-supported solutions to improve meeting equity and ever-higher quality video and audio in a bid for more immersive experiences, the simplest approach for many companies will be to have people in the office more often. It is still unclear how the present economic uncertainty will impact current

work arrangements. With budgets stretched, has collaboration technology become sufficiently vital to preserve it from budget cuts, or is this an area where employers will be looking to make cost savings? Certainly, home-working budgets are under pressure, while at the same time, high energy costs are encouraging employees to go into the office rather than heat their own homes throughout the working day.

The balance of power between hardware and software has shifted decisively in recent years, with AV vendors increasingly working to an agenda set by the major cloud conferencing platforms. This has led to many in the industry claiming victory for room solutions such as Microsoft Teams Rooms. However, there is still significant life in the bring your own

Mission-critical vision

KVM specialist Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) is demonstrating its VisionXS series on its stand this week. The KVM system has matrix-compatible extenders that transmit video signals at resolutions of up to 4K at 60Hz and includes the company’s bluedec loss-free compression technology.

The system is described as a “smart visualisation solution” to help users optimise more complex workflows. Videowalls and personal work areas can be adjusted to suit custom requirements with the company’s new multiviewing tool, the PersonalWorkplace-Controller.

device model, with many organisations preferring to avoid subscription costs, while enjoying the greater flexibility of the software-agnostic approach. The total addressable market for videoconferencing has vastly increased since the pandemic, and while tightly integrated solutions may serve enterprise customers, that approach does little to meet the needs of the many thousands of smaller and medium-sized companies that are installing collaboration equipment for the first time.

LANG AG | Stand: 3H600

Protective ring of Fire

LANG is presenting its integrated fire protection system at ISE this week, including what it describes as “the world’s smallest fire extinguisher”.

The company’s media Fire Protect system aims to minimise building safety risks with the help of a self-extinguishing device (AMFE or E-Bulb) containing the “world’s smallest fire extinguisher”, which reacts immediately to a fire at its source.

The system is currently in use in public spaces such as airports and shopping malls and is seen as integral to the protection of technology equipment and systems such as LCD, OLED displays and LED products.

In the event of a fire, an automatic disconnection from the mains ensures that the power supply to the unit is interrupted and, within a few seconds, an extinguishing agent is released to put out the fire at the point of origin.

Cue | Stand: 3E175

Beginning a new era of smart space management

Integration and reservation systems maker Cue is displaying its touchONE-solution on its stand. Part of the company’s touchONE multilingual workspace management and resource scheduling ecosystem, the solution consists of three apps: one for indoor navigation; one for planning and reserving; and one for central administration, statistics and analytics. touchONE-navigation helps to guide users to any resource (room, workplace, or parking place) or point of interest (such as museum exhibits, or toilets) using both drawn paths in floorplans and direct navigation instructions. touchONE-assist is a tool for the search and reservation of meeting rooms, workplaces and other shared resources, while touchONE-admin is an administration and analytics application for central management and whole-system administration.

The touchONE-solution is also available as a cloud platform and can be licensed on a subscription basis (SaaS), as well as centrally hosted.

Shure | Stand: 3N250

Flexible audio solutions for a flexible environment

The message from Shure at this year’s ISE is that companies, educational institutions and other organisations are trying to find a balance between being flexible and being productive as workplaces and classrooms continue to evolve to suit emerging working and teaching styles.

To help IT managers, integrators and audio professionals meet this demand, the company is showcasing its enhanced Stem Ecosystem with audio solutions that are “user friendly, scalable, easy to integrate with other communication platforms and flexible to adapt to hybrid and ‘hyflex’ working and learning environments”. Stem Ecosystem has benefitted from firmware updates that bring improved audio clarity to achieve more natural speech for spaces of various sizes and configurations.

Digital signage: Accelerating interactivity and improving the customer experience

Of the many innovations to have impacted digital signage in recent years, the resurgence of a 25-year-old technology – the QR code – was surely one of the most striking. With the pandemic ruling out direct hand contact with displays, the QR code allowed retailers and brands to maintain engagement with their customers despite the drastically changed world they were now moving through.

Visitors to ISE should expect to hear plenty about forms of interactivity new and old, as well as trends such as the increasing use of automation and the potential of the metaverse to change the digital signage landscape. On the show floor, Hall 6 contains the Digital Signage & DooH Technology Zone, featuring exhibitors

Lighting the way back to another live events boom

There is no doubt that the live events sector was among those most badly affected by the pandemic, but it’s also been one of the areas of AV to come back most strongly as Covid restrictions have eased. Pent-up post-lockdown desire for the collective experience has fuelled a renaissance in live events, encompassing everything from spectacular public art installations to extensive tours by globally successful bands. So it’s only fitting that ISE should feature a dedicated Lighting & Staging Zone in Hall 7, where solutions on display will

Velocity control takes to the clouds

Epson is on track to meet its global 2021 commitment to transition to 100% renewable electricity use this year, moving to a mix of solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric sources. All of its European sales offices are already powered by renewables, and it expects this will lead to an estimated saving of 36,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year from 2023. All of its major Japanese manufacturing sites switched to 100% renewable electricity in 2021.

The company has recently been awarded an EcoVadis Platinum Rating, placing it in the top 1% of companies in the industry for sustainability for the third successive year; based on a framework of 21 criteria mapped to global standards and guided by the international scientific community.

Henning Ohlsson, director of sustainability, Epson Europe, said: “We understand that sustainability is increasingly important to all our customers and this latest accreditation reaffirms our commitment to leading the way in improving our society, through better products and business practices.”

Informed by global frameworks such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Epson has committed €770 million to switch to renewable energy sources, reduce its global emissions to meet the 1.5° IPCC warming limit, and become underground-resource-free by 2050. Atlona is introducing a cloud service for its Velocity AV control systems. Available in three annually renewable tiers, Velocity Premier Services Remote Gateway (AT-VPS-RG) streamlines important tasks such as system set-up, device configuration and troubleshooting, as well as credential and firmware updates from any device with a browser or internet connection. The result should prove a more efficient and reliable way to service and support end users remotely.

AT-VPS-RG establishes a secure proxy connection between a server and the gateway over the internet. Resellers, integrators, or IT administrators can remotely configure systems and manage devices without directly accessing the corporate network, reducing costs associated with on-site visits while accelerating their response to support issues. An online dashboard provides centralised access for managing multiple gateways. It also supports storage of both recurring and manual system backups in the cloud, and BYOD AV control over the remote connection. —DAVID FOX www.atlona.com

A shining example of laser projection

Digital Projection is demonstrating what it claims is the industry’s “most comprehensive high-brightness projection range” at ISE, including its latest Satellite MLS (Modular Laser System) units (pictured), the world’s brightest 1-chip DLP projector (M-Vision 27000), as well its Titan Laser range of projectors. Satellite MLS technology allows projectors to be both smaller and more powerful as it separates the light source from the small, lightweight projector head. This gives integrators greater freedom, particularly where space and access are restricted, while also reducing noise and heat from the audience location. The projection head can be separated from the light source by fibreoptic cables of up to 100m long. The technology can also help make high-end RGB laser illumination accessible at a more cost-effective price point.

The new M-Vision 27000 is said to be the world’s brightest 1-chip DLP projector. It features ColorBoost and Red Laser, and is claimed to offer “stunningly saturated colours at levels of brightness never attained before”.

Q&A: Charlie Jones, insights manager, global alliances, Sennheiser Business Communications

Why do you think the ISE show has managed to grow year after year?

ISE has continued to grow due to one reason: people! There is no better opportunity for our industry to share best practices, learn about new products and catch up with old friends than at the show. Covid showed us that while virtual meetings and classrooms can work in some situations, they do not work for trade shows. It’s difficult to appreciate the world’s highest quality display or best-sounding audio system when everything is virtual.

In which areas do you see voice control offering the greatest opportunities to your company?

Considering we have spent 75+ years developing microphone technology to perfectly capture the human voice, we are very excited about the growth of voice control. Not only does voice control have the potential to make it easier than ever to interface with technology, it can also remove barriers for entire groups of people who have physical impairments to using traditional touchpanels, keyboards and the like.

What changes do you envisage in the unified communications market in 2023? The future of the UC space is all about AI. We are starting to see smart cameras that can not only count the number

of participants, but even generate a report to tell you how interested or happy the participants were during the call. And AI is not just for video. Why should you have to sit through an entire three-hour meeting in case someone assigned you a task? Why not let AI monitor the call and afterwards send you an email recap with action items automatically added to your to-do list? www.sennheiser.com

Networking’s story of standards and sustained evolution

The extent to which the AV and IT worlds could – and should – meld together more seamlessly has been an increasingly hot topic for the best part of 10 years. With factors such as cost-efficiency and practicality leading to a greater reliance on shared network infrastructures, as well as the advent of new technology standards, it was inevitable that more solutions would emerge which transcend their origins and appeal across market sectors.

From a developmental perspective, it’s led to an abundance of new products, and ISE 2023 visitors will see these in evidence across several halls. Some of the world-leading names – including Adder Technology, Atlona, Matrox, Magewell and Riedel Communications – are to be found in the Multi-Technology Zone of Hall 5, while Halls 3 and 7 will also host plenty of networking innovations. Control rooms have historically been important proving grounds for new AV and

The opportunity for Irlab is that we use only one Linux SoC to drive both AI camera and screen display, so that ad and monitoring video can be displayed on the same screen, which is a lower cost and more efficient solution than traditional PVM. Moreover, we support ads to be deployed with picture and video by CMS or web, which is very convenient for end users’ operation.

“When AI is used in digital signage, it can create a more personalised experience for consumers and salespeople, such as displaying ads precisely, increasing satisfaction, inspiring repeat visits and optimising operational efficiency.”

Irlab says it has devoted much research and development to its smart digital signage built-in AI camera to realise countless useful functions based on AI and to “add more possibilities for digital signage”. STEVE FAIRCLOUGH www.irlab.net

V1 Architecture makes reshuffling cabinet more sustainable

The LED Studio, powered by VOD Visual, now has what it claims is “the industry’s first LED display cabinet design that is compatible with three advanced LED technologies” for better sustainability and future-proofing.

The proprietary cabinet infrastructure permits LED displays to be constructed using SMD, flipchip SMD or flip-chip SMD High Bright technologies, thanks to the way the PCBs are manufactured. The V1 Architecture requires just 30% of the display to be replaced during an upgrade, reducing waste.

Rob Bint, CEO, The LED Studio, said: “The option to choose from three advanced manufacturing technologies and various pixel pitches is a massive evolution in the LED industry.”

According to Bint, the architecture provides users with “access to advanced technologies within their current budgets while helping to plan for future upgrades that are more attainable”.

“It marks the first time a single display has embodied flexibility and sustainability to protect initial investments, reduce waste and support technology progression,” he added.

The V1 Architecture is being launched within The Edge Pro LED

display, which the company says is another industry first. The Edge Pro single die-cast cabinets are direct replacements for 43in LCDs, up to three times brighter than traditional LCDs (4,000 nits) and use proprietary sustainability technology to reduce power consumption by up to 75% compared to average LCDs. Avoid energy waste with Aidoo

The Aidoo range is intended to expand the possibilities offered by building management systems (BMS) and home automation systems. It is now possible to integrate direct expansion and fan coil air-conditioning units into home automation and BMS, as well as to control them via smartphone using the Airzone Cloud app.

Aidoo Pro integrates air conditioning via Modbus, BACnet, local API and API Cloud through the use of drivers available for Fibaro, Lutron, Control4, and more. Aidoo Pro Fancoil allows the control of two- and four-pipe fan coil units.

The product has three ports to achieve a common goal: avoiding energy waste. This functionality will detect rooms that are unoccupied for five minutes and deactivate the systems in them. It will also activate a window opening sensor, which detects open windows to turn off the equipment automatically. With an ‘eco mode’, users can vary the setpoint temperature by 2.5° to avoid temperature changes that prevent inefficient operation of the unit.

The PTZ that thinks it’s a studio camera

Panasonic has unveiled two new 4K cameras: the AK-PLV100 studio camera; and the AW-UE160 PTZ unit that incorporates several industry firsts.

The AW-UE160 is the first PTZ camera to be equipped with SMPTE ST 2110 as standard (via a software key) for video transmission over IP networks. It is also the first with a built-in 5G mobile router (with USB tethering support) for high-speed, high-capacity video transmission. And, it is claimed, it offers the industry’s first return input function for a PTZ, so it can be used with a prompter or display for return images and scripts, ideal for performers needing to check their position for chroma key compositing or working with AR/VR systems.

It also supports high-end functions such as: a maximum 2x high-speed shooting (HD 120fps); a rear tally lamp; HDR (HLG) and V-Log support; high sensitivity of f14/2,000 lux; and two XLR audio channels.

The AK-PLV100 has a 5.7K Super 35mm sensor and PL lens mount for a shallow-depth look, with switchable frame rates (24p to 60p), direct SMPTE ST 2110 video output without connecting to a CCU, and compatibility with Panasonic’s 2/3in studio-camera system. DAVID FOX eu.connect.panasonic.com

WDC-903 turns heads with automatic tracking

The WDC-903 digital wireless conference discussion system from Relacart Electronics is aiming to turn heads as it makes its ISE debut in Barcelona this week.

The wireless conference system can be used in conjunction with the company’s VTS-2000 video tracking system to automatically track the location of the speaker’s wireless microphone unit with no interaction by the speaker.

Designed for use in local government, conference rooms and business venues,

WDC-903 is fully Dante compliant.

The 1U rackmount base unit can automatically power on from cold, simultaneously sending instructions to power-on conference units at the same time. It uses the LoRa open standard protocol and automatically locks onto interference-free channels using its Auto Frequency Selection function. Relacart claims this antiinterference functionality can block out the impact of computer devices, mobile phones and Bluetooth devices in the local environment.
