AVIXA Women’s Council Reunites at InfoComm As is the tradition, the Thursday morning of InfoComm is when women and men in the AV industry gather at 7:30 a.m. for the AVIXA Women’s Council Breakfast. This was the first gathering that felt like we were back—en masse—300 strong. Industry Veteran Introduces a Newcomer If you look at Brittany DiCesare’s LinkedIn account, it says, “relationship builder and solution finder.” Anyone who knows her would agree that description is accurate. After four years as manager of Professional Society Member Programs with AVIXA, six months ago she joined Control Concepts, Inc. as an account manager. This InfoComm was her first as an attendee. “I’ve already been able to start some mentoring relationships within our company,” DiCesare said. “We’re over 25 percent female, so it’s been great to be able to help them along their careers.” Her mentorship doesn’t stop with Control Concepts. “I get to help others, too. I brought someone here today who is trying to get into the industry. So, I was like, yeah, just come to the breakfast. Let’s go. This is where you need to be.” In her new role, DiCesare leverages relationships she built while at AVIXA. ”We’re all about building relationships. We want to help manufacturers with any problems that they’re experiencing across the control platforms. We really get to be a solution provider.”

DiCesare is mentoring a newcomer to the AV industry—her colleague, Emily Rocha joined Control Concepts seven months ago as a marketing specialist. While the AV industry was unfamiliar to Rocha, having worked at an IT company in Brazil, she is comfortable navigating technology. As for her expectation for attending her first InfoComm she said, “It’s about the relationships that I have had in these past seven months and being able to meet them in person is amazing.” In her first ten minutes into the breakfast gathering, Rocha said, “I’ve already met some amazing woman, and want to understand more about how I can be part of this, how I can be helpful and how it could be helpful to me as well.” (continued on page 62)

InfoComm Underscores Growing Industry Optimism By Clive Young Everyone has a unique experience at InfoComm, but this week, as the show returns to Las Vegas for the first time in four years, many attendees are experiencing a reassuring sense of the familiar, mixed with the thrill of the new. Following last fall’s strong but smaller edition in Orlando, InfoComm 2022 marks a full-fledged return for the convention, with all the hallmarks of a robust trade show and an industry dead set on leaving the effects of the pandemic in the rearview mirror. On the show’s opening day, aisles were packed as attendees hustled to all the must-see booths on their lists, running into familiar industry friends along the way and stopping to discover new solutions. Much of that action this week is taking place in the new West Hall, too, providing an extra sense of excitement. The upbeat vibe is unmistakable, said Gary Boss, marketing director for AudioTechnica. “People are way optimistic; they are super happy to be seen in real life,” he grinned. “For us, InfoComm is a unique place to be able to actually show we sell physical items. We don’t sell software, and much of what we do is based on relationships, so when we can demonstrate a physical item to a real person to further strengthen those relationships, that’s a great opportunity for us.” Key among the physical items A-T is showing at Booth W1713 is the new ATND 1061 Dante beamforming ceiling array microphone. With the industry ready to return to in-person events, attending this year’s InfoComm was a given for most exhibitors. “We’ve been doing InfoComm for almost 10 years,” said RF Venue co-founder Chris Regan, who’s been highlighting the company’s new diversity architectural antenna at Booth W1139. “We do a lot of business in the install market; (continued on page 62)

Audio Demo Room Derby, Part 2 By Clive Young Today’s loudspeakers and audio systems are sleek, well-designed products that look as good as they sound—but while seeing a speaker on the exhibit floor is cool, you really need to hear it in action to know what you think of it. That’s why you need to check out this year’s InfoComm Audio Demo rooms. Up on the second floor of West Hall are 10 top manufacturers showing off everything from their networking options to imposing line arrays. Here’s more great rooms to check out! Adamson Systems Engineering (W208)—Immer- Harman’s David Tewksbury, shows sive audio is the name of the game these days, and the JBL SLP Series speaker in the Adamson is jumping in with the Adamson Fletcher company’s demo room Machine, an audio rendering processor for spatial audio, being demoed here at the show twice a day. Taking a new approach to objectbased mixing, the Adamson Fletcher Machine utilizes amplitude and time localization to render signals calculated from the objects’ point of view. 1 Sound (W209)—Designed in Veneto, Italy, and manufactured in New Jersey, 1 Sound is presenting its Panorama mono/stereo speakers, Cannon coaxials, Tower line arrays, Contour passive speakers, subwoofers and more to packed crowds. No less than five installations are currently going into Las Vegas venues at the moment. RCF (W213)—RCF always has a lot to share at InfoComm, and the 2022 edition is no different. While there’s plenty to check out at its booth, dip into the company’s demo room to check out the NX 985 active three-way speaker, TT+ 515 active speaker and matching TT+ 808 active subwoofer, among other offerings. Harman (W215)—There’s a plethora of Harman Professional brands on-hand inside the company’s demo room, and not all of them are audio-oriented. But that said, you can treat your ears to the new JBL Pro SRX900 powered line array and VTX:A-Series line array, as well as learn more about Soundcraft consoles, Crown amplifiers and more. Martin Audio (W218)—Packing them in throughout the convention is Martin Audio, which has been showing off a variety of its many loudspeaker lines, including the SX Series, CDD Coaxial Differential Dispersion Series, Adorn line for commercial installation applications, Torus, Wavefront Precision line arrays and more.

BOOTH W923 Blackmagic Design’s new HyperDeck Shuttle HD is a recorder and player designed to be used on the desktop. More than a master recorder, it can also be used as a clip player. The large search dial is perfect for scrolling through lots of media to find the clip customers want to play. Audio-Technica Celebrates 60 Years of Analog Audio on a Global Scale BOOTH W1713 Inspired by the depth of emotion he witnessed at vinyl listening sessions organized during his tenure at the Bridgestone Museum of Arts in Tokyo, Hideo Matsushita was determined to enable more people to experience the warmth of analog listening. In a small Shinjuku apartment, he established Audio-Technica and began developing cartridges. His first two products, the AT-1 and AT-3, achieved success and enabled Matsushita to expand his business. He opened a larger headquarters in Machida, where the company still operates today. April 17, 2022, marked 60 years since Matsushita created his first cartridge and AudioTechnica will mark this occasion by reaffirming its commitment to analog. Focusing on a humancentered approach to the process of generating sound, the company sees analog as an enjoyment and appreciation for audio that doesn’t alter, despite the rapid changes throughout history.

International distributors that come to this show are great to connect with, so coming here is really productive.” During the height of the pandemic, the entire world adapted to conducting business remotely via videoconferencing and other technologies, but the process made maintaining business relations a challenge. With that in mind, ACT Entertainment made a point of exhibiting at Booth W2303. “I felt like this was going to be a highly attended show,” said Darius Seabaugh, senior VP of marketing. “I knew that we’d get to see some of the new guys that we haven’t made contact with and tell them our ACT Entertainment story so they know that they have the full breadth of our product line available. I’m very happy with the attendance so far.” There’s more to a trade show than merely exhibits, education or the opportunity to network, however; it’s also a chance to know you’re part of a community, and that is what many are experiencing at the show this year. “InfoComm has always been an outstanding environment for the AV community to gather and celebrate innovation; however, the

The Grand Re-opening Opening the breakfast were new co-chairs of the AVIXA Women’s Council Tammy Fuqua, developer partner manager for QSC, and Diana Patricia Quintero, CTS, territory manager, LATAM export at Bose. Fuqua and Quintero welcomed new members and announced that the AVIXA Women’s Council now has 1028 members, with 197 of those international with new groups in Italy, Germany and Latin America. Brandy Alvarado-Miranda, CEO at BAM!, and former AVIXA Women’s Council chair, gave a lovely and heartwarming shoutout to Cory Schaeffer, director of systems solutions at QSC who is retiring. When Schaeffer entered the AV industry there were very few women. “I wanted to change the industry and you know, we did a bit, but our numbers are 14 percent,” she said. “If you think about, the world population, we should be at 52 percent. I wanted to exit with higher numbers. And that’s my greatest regret. So, my ask is: let’s get it done and let’s not take 34 years to get it done.”

2022 show is proving to be something special,” said Gina Sansivero, VP of marketing and corporate communications at AtlasIED (W2323). “Positive energy and excitement permeate throughout the show floor. This year’s show is a testament to the AV community’s strength and resilience in returning to in-person events, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the show has in store.” That sense of optimism around the convention has been palpable, as Brian Pickowitz, vice president of marketing at LEA Professional, noted. Standing in Booth W2861 telling visitors about the 1504 Connect Series 1500W Amps, he noted, “With every person that’s come through here, we’ve seen such optimism about the industry and businesses. People are making plans, looking at growth, saying, ‘How do I expand my business, and how does your product fit into that?’ It’s reassuring for me just to see that, because it shows that if business is not back to normal, it’s getting back up there—no more ‘what ifs.’” Based on the mood here, it’s clear the industry expects the future to be more steady and reliable. Hand in hand with that, another thing everyone can count on is InfoComm 2023, which will take place next year at the Orlando Convention Center in Florida, with education running June 10-16 and exhibits kicking in June 14-16.

A Bad Ass Keynote The breakfast featured keynote speaker Melanie Spring, Chief Visionary of Confidancia, an agency built to help rebels start revolutions. Spring entered the stage looking totally bad ass and energized the audience by talking about the importance of being our authentic selves. Spring defined the personal brand we already carry with us, then how to speak our truth to our clients and teams, our friends and family and our world. She shared stories of her own path to becoming unfiltered while giving the tools to speak that truth with confidence and authenticity. Not a Dry Eye Spring guided the audience through a personal visualization exercise to learn a bit about ourselves. Each person paired up with another, looked into their eyes and studied every element of their face. We were asked to superimpose the face of a person we love deeply onto the person in front of us. Then we were asked to superimpose the face of a person we loved deeply who we have lost. I looked around me and saw many tears. We were asked to tell each other three to five words that we felt described the person we had become intimately familiar with in less than five minutes. Nobody was expecting a therapy session, and all agreed it was powerful.
