s we begin 2024, GBH continues our commitment to storytelling that examines inequities in our society, driving thoughtful conversations and offering possible solutions toward a better world. One of our nation’s most urgent and unanswered questions is around the topic of reparative justice, exploring America’s struggle to come to grips with its true history. This month, we are launching an important new initiative called “Reckoning and Repair,” which will investigate the historical record and the discussion now underway in Boston and across the nation about reparations. The aim, across platforms and programs, is to help listeners, viewers and readers understand the nuance, debate, ambiguity and possible action resulting from the legacy of slavery in the United States. The project will begin with WORLD’s powerful documentary The Cost of Inheritance: An America ReFramed Special (see page 13) which will premiere on Jan. 8 on GBH 2 and on PBS, and again on WORLD on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This one-hour film traces the nation’s legacy of systemic inequities, introducing audiences to descendants of enslaved people and those who enslaved them, profiling their complex intertwined histories and detailing their quest to bridge divides. The film is produced and directed by Emmy® nominee and Peabody Award–winner Yoruba Richen, who told us she set out to illustrate, “how we can engage in honest conversation about our past and move forward towards racial justice. Never has there been a more urgent time to engage in this discussion as the global reckoning with slavery and colonization continues to unfold.” The film is told through people seeking to understand their shared histories. We meet Sarah Eisner, a White woman

who discovered her ancestors had enslaved people; she embarks on a quest to right the wrongs of her family’s past by reaching out to Randy Quarterman, a descendant of one of those individuals. Through their story and those of others, reckoning and repair emerge. The next series in this Sign up here initiative will be an eight- for updates on part podcast in February by “Reckoning GBH News called “What Is and Repair.” Owed?”. The podcast will establish Boston as both a historic and contemporary epicenter for the reparations movement, offering audiences a way to understand the current conversation and the diverse perspectives about the issues at stake. In addition, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and FRONTLINE will release documentaries on the topic later this year, and WORLD’s Stories from the Stage and GBH News’ Basic Black will also feature episodes on the subject. The podcast and some of our other work around reparative justice will be funded in part by a three-year $750,000 grant from the Barr Foundation. This generous support also will help fund an expanded team of reporters in our newsroom, whose work will focus on issues of inequity, expand our outreach efforts to marginalized communities and create a civic dialogue around these defining issues. The Cost of Inheritance, which also explores the ripple effects of the racial wealth gap, will debut on GBH 2 as an America ReFramed special on January 8 and launch on WORLD on January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “This film elevates reparations from being a political issue to being a human issue,” said WORLD Executive Producer Chris Hastings (below). “The film isn’t about what the government should do—it’s the story of personal accountability. I think it starts the process of healing something that we haven’t reckoned with.” Directed and produced by Emmy® nominee and Peabody Award–winner Yoruba Richen, the film features insights from experts, activists and historians; archival material; and personal stories from communities that are launching grassroots initiatives to redress economic inequalities that stem from racial injustice. One story in the film is Lotte Lieb Dula’s, a White woman who discovered an old family journal that contained a list of Black enslaved people listed by name, age and value. “There were 44 souls listed in this ledger,” she says in the film. “If our family enslaved others, I’ve got some repair work I’ve got to do.” She went on to co-found Reparations4Slavery with Briayna Cuffie, an African American. “I hope viewers will be surprised at the balance and truth-telling that emerges in this film,” said Emmy © Award–winning Executive

She also produced PBS’s Harbor from The Holocaust, which told the story of European Jews who fled Nazi persecution and sought refuge in Shanghai. The new film is a natural fit for America ReFramed, which has featured the award-winning Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts and Fannie Lou Hamer’s America, said Hastings. “At WORLD we work really hard to find those relevant, important stories from independent, often marginalized filmmakers, who don’t have the infrastructure available that more established producers do,” he said. “We want to accelerate them and move them to the next level.” Making the human connection is essential when addressing issues like reparations, said Ford Williams. “Storytelling is at the heart of any compelling social narrative,” she said. “You can talk about any issue with experts and at meetings, but until you start telling personal stories, you don’t get to the ’why should I care?’ connection.” She hopes the film paves the way for more understanding and conversations between White and Black Americans. “The divide between us as Americans is so fraught with so many issues with so much complexity. If we don’t examine this issue, the rest of our issues are in large part compounded,” she said. Hastings agrees. “I hope this film gets people talking. I think the problem with race in America today is we don’t talk enough. We yell. And that just makes us more divided.” The film doesn’t advocate for any position or opinion, said Ford Williams. Instead it presents a nuanced view of the key issues and scope and rationale of the reparations debate from a number of perspectives. “I hope viewers come away understanding that reparations can take many forms, not necessarily in the form of money,” she said. “There are many aspects to reparations, but they all begin with truth. oin a remarkable musical odyssey with South African vocalist NALEDI as she shares songs from her debut album BATHO at the next JazzNOW event from GBH Music and JazzBoston on February 8 in GBH Fraser Performance Studio. NALEDI’s soulful and spirited voice draws influences from jazz, storytelling and her African heritage. Her music first took root in her kraal, a South African homestead, and her training led her to the New England Conservatory. Her career took off after being named a 2019 Kennedy Center Artist in Residence and landing gigs at storied venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. NALEDI’s performances are a full-bodied sonic journey driven by her endless artistic curiosity. Off the stage, she runs the Dreaming Girls Arts Foundation, which supports girls in the arts as they develop the critical skills to engage with social justice. Register for the event here.

ebruary marks the Boston Symphony Orchestra debut of two of today’s most remarkable young soloists. On February 3, American violinist Randall Goosby, the youngest-ever winner of the Sphinx Concerto Competition, takes center stage to perform Max Bruch’s lively Violin Concerto No. 1 under the direction of Andris Nelsons. On February 17, the orchestra showcases South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim in a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3. Tune in on Saturdays at 8pm to experience live broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra on CRB Classical 99.5 with host Brian McCreath.

Solar Panels in Historic Districts

ach year, thousands of people return from Massachusetts state prisons to face the challenge of finding employment, housing and reintegration into society. Life After Prison, an ongoing series from the GBH News Center for Investigative Reporting, amplifies the voices of those trying to restart their lives— with little assistance from the state. GBH News reporting also uncovers the fragmented post-release support system that leaves many returning citizens dependent on small community-based nonprofits, such as the Transformational Prison Project in Cambridge. Life After Prison addresses issues faced by marginalized groups within the incarcerated population, including the LGBTQ+ community. The series also looks at the mental health challenge of “post-incarceration syndrome,” a term widely used among inmates and justice reform organizations, but not recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. GBH News Investigations and Impact Editor Paul Singer says the project began by listening and getting to know dozens of formerly incarcerated people. “We began by embedding with a community and asking them to help direct our reporting. Through their eyes and with their guidance, we began to see staggering and systemic injustices and huge gaps in government policies.” Learn more here.

armouth resident John Beach worked with a solar company that initially proposed panels on the front and back of his house, but the Yarmouth Old Kings Highway Historic District Committee denied a proposal to install any panels that faced the street. In a report by CAI’s Eve Zuckoff, Beach said committee members told him solar panels on the front of his house would be “historically inappropriate.” “I certainly respect what they’re trying to do,” he said. “But I think we need to become more aware of the nexus between historic preservation and the need to safeguard our environment.” Even though Beach only has panels on the back of his house, he has seen a 50 percent drop in his electric bills. Legislation proposed by state Sen. Julian Cyr, a Democrat who represents the Cape, could define solar panels in historic districts as public necessities, just like utility poles and wires. If that bill becomes law, historic committees would have far less power over solar approvals. And that could allow John Beach to install solar panels also on the front of his house—where he wanted them all along.

Roasted Carrots with Pistachio Gremolata INGREDIENTS Serves eight FOR THE CARROTS: 12 medium carrots, peeled and halved lengthwise

• 2–3 tbsp olive oil • Pinch of kosher salt • Freshly ground pepper • 3–4 sprigs fresh thyme

FOR THE GREMOLATA: 1 /2 cup unsalted pistachios, toasted

• • / cup mint leaves, chopped • / cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped • 2 tbsp fresh tarragon, chopped • 2 anchovy filets packed in oil, patted dry and 1 1

TO PREPARE STEP 1 In a large bowl, combine the carrots, olive oil and thyme. Salt and pepper to taste. Toss to coat. Then transfer to a large cast iron pan.

They visit an outdoor market for farm-fresh produce to make roasted carrots with pistachio gremolata. Watch it come together on Moveable Feast on Wed (1/6) at 11:30am on GBH 2.

STEP 2 Roast in a wood-fired oven or regular oven at 425°F until tender when pierced with a fork, about 30 minutes. STEP 3 For the gremolata, process the pistachios in a food processor until very finely ground. Add the herbs, anchovies and lemon zest. Pulse to combine. Add the olive oil and pulse just until mixture comes together. Transfer to a serving bowl and season with 1/2 tsp salt. STEP 4 Remove the carrots from the oven and serve with the pistachio gremolata.
