Taking the pulse of the aftermarket

Insights from the Aftermarket Profile and what they mean for distributors on the truck.

Each year, Professional Distributor takes a closer look at the state of the automotive aftermarket through our annual Aftermarket Profile. This feature provides a snapshot of how shops are operating today, what tools and equipment technicians are prioritizing, and where they are choosing to invest their dollars.

For distributors, understanding these trends is critical. The tools technicians rely on continue to evolve alongside vehicle technology, shop workflows, and customer expectations. The Aftermarket Profile helps highlight the priorities shaping purchasing decisions across the industry, offering insight into what technicians are looking for and where demand may be heading.

While every route is different, the broader patterns that emerge from the Aftermarket Profile can help distributors better understand the landscape they are working in. From the product categories technicians are most interested in to the types of solutions gaining traction in shops, these insights can help guide conversations on the truck and inform inventory decisions throughout the year.

The report also reflects the changing nature of the repair environment. As vehicles become more complex and repair procedures more specialized, the tools technicians depend on must keep pace. Shops are balancing productivity, training, and investment decisions that ultimately shape what ends up in a technician’s toolbox.

That makes staying informed more important than ever. Understanding what technicians value, what challenges they are trying to solve, and which

solutions are resonating across the industry helps strengthen the relationship between distributor and customer.

This year’s Aftermarket Profile continues that tradition by highlighting the trends, priorities, and purchasing patterns shaping today’s shops. While no single report can capture every nuance of the industry, it offers valuable perspective on where technicians are focusing their attention and how the tool and equipment landscape continues to evolve.

As you read through this issue, you may see trends that reflect what you are already hearing from customers on your route. In other cases, the findings may provide new insight into how technicians are approaching their work and the tools they rely on to get the job done.

Either way, the Aftermarket Profile offers another lens for understanding the industry distributors serve every day.

Understanding your customers' buying habits with the Aftermarket Profile will help you stock what they need.

YOUR TRUCK

Something old and something new

While the body of Cornwell distributor Alex Indeck’s truck is from the 70’s, the modifications on the inside have turned it into a modern-day showroom.

Cornwell distributor Alex Indeck has been selling tools for 10 years in Lakeville, Massachusetts, stopping at mom-and-pop shops, car dealerships, construction companies, and pretty much anywhere else “that has money and is willing to pay.” Indeck joined the industry after striking up a conversation with a fellow Cornwell distributor about life as a dealer.

“I asked him about the business and if there was good money in it, could you make a living out of it,” Indeck explains. “A month and a half later, I was sitting in my own tool truck.”

Around two years ago, Indeck decided it was time to upgrade his ride and began the process of getting his 1974 Kenworth W900A. While the act of physically acquiring the truck was rather simple, Indeck had to jump through a fair share of hoops to get approval for it.

“When you say, ‘I want to daily drive a 1974,’ there’s definitely some explanation needed to make stuff happen there,” Indeck says. “They needed to understand the truck’s body is a ‘74, but everything else is new.”

Once the truck had been picked up from Long Island and was safely back with Indeck, he stretched the frame out and sent it to Herr Display Vans where it was set up with a box and made ready for the road.

YOUR TRUCK IS YOUR SHOWROOM

In Indeck’s old truck, his inventory had a more cramped, packed feel. That environment made it difficult at times to find things, and he knew that with his new truck he wanted to be a lot more organized.

On the new truck, Indeck wanted it to feel like his customers were stepping into a store or a showroom. Having pull-out drawers and walls has helped with this.

Grouping products together allows Indeck and technicians to more easily navigate the truck and all it has to offer. In addition to organizing products by their function or type, Indeck keeps Milwaukee tools grouped together as they’re in demand amongst his customers. With GripEdge’s rising popularity, he’s moved their kits to their own big shelf as well.

“It’s organized so it looks and displays like a store,” Indeck says. “My previous truck had a lot of inventory on it, but when I got this truck and set it up, I had guys coming out that wouldn’t come out before, and I’d sit at my desk and watch them, not saying anything. They were walking down the aisle and looking at the stuff on the shelf, and it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, this is a disaster, I can’t tell where stuff is.’ They were able to actually look.”

Organization is a never-ending battle in this industry, with new stock coming in and customers and other visitors moving things around.

“My two-and-a-half-year-old runs down the aisle, rips stuff off the shelves. It’s just this ongoing thing,” Indeck says. “I do my absolute best to keep the truck as organized as I can.”

Indeck has his work area on the passenger side of the truck. The space features dual monitors on top and bottom, and a tablet to control the music that plays throughout the day. His monitor is set up in such a way that he has full view of the entire aisle, ready to jump in if a customer has a question or needs help finding something.

LOVE WHAT YOU DO

With a decade of history in this industry, Indeck has learned that there’s no right way to run your business. He tries to lead with compassion and understanding, willing to be there for his customers even when he’s driven off.

“I enjoy what I do,” Indeck says. “This career isn’t for everyone, but as long as you enjoy what you’re doing it’s endless. There’s no book on how to run this business; you move forward every day with it, and you go out and sell tools. Everything else just kind of falls into place.”

Indeck's family is the heart of his business, helping him keep things organized and working efficiently. Do you need auto industry experience to be a mobile tool distributor?

Absolutely not — experience can actually be a pitfall for some new distributors.

One of the concerns I’d occasionally hear from people looking to become a professional tool distributor was, “I don’t have any experience as a professional technician.” A large percentage of people were automotive technicians prior to entering the mobile tool business. So, is it a requirement?

Absolutely not. I owned a number of street rods, muscle cars, and motorcycles prior to becoming a tool dealer. I enjoyed working on my own vehicles, but I had never been employed as a technician. When I was first exploring becoming a tool distributor, I remember the intimidation I felt walking onto a tool truck and looking at all the different tools for the first time. I remember thinking to myself, I don’t even know what half of those tools are used for. How can I sell tools that I know very little about?

CUSTOMER SERVICE OVER TOOL KNOWLEDGE

While it’s true, dealers with an automotive background have certain industry advantages. I believe, tool knowledge is second to exceptional customer rapport and service. An issue some technicians have to overcome is the lack of direct customer interaction. For some, the service manager or service writer was their primary customer contact. They never had to deal with direct customer contact. The technician reads the work order from the service center and performs the required repairs.

I’ve started new dealers who had very little experience with face-toface customer contact. I can remember telling them, “At the next stop, smile, shake hands, make eye contact, and thank the customer even if he doesn’t purchase anything.” It can be gut-wrenching watching a guy who has just quit a good job and invested a large sum of money struggle with basic customer contact. However, it’s an obstacle that can be overcome.

The same can be said of the lack of direct tool knowledge. Quality district managers take ownership in ensuring a new dealer’s successful launch of their business. An important part of their responsibility is to help the dealer develop all the skills needed for success.

LET YOUR CUSTOMERS TEACH YOU

I believe having a sales and customer service background can be more relevant than actual tool knowledge. I discovered that my customers were eager to “educate” me on the specifics of all the specialty tools. I had no shortage of technicians willing to share their knowledge to help me. Along with that came the end-user knowledge of, “This tool was designed for this specific application, and we found it worked marginally well for that application, but it really works better for an unrelated application.”

KEEP YOUR REPAIR ADVICE TO YOURSELF

On the other hand, dealers with a technical background and little customer service skills might focus on vehicle repair advice as opposed to selling the tool. It’s meant with the best intentions, but it can be taken the wrong way.

I recall having a shop owner warn me not to bring another new dealer who would tell them how to do a repair. He told me, “If I have another new tool dealer walk in and tell me how to fix cars, I swear, I’ll kick him out!” I had a body shop owner relate a similar experience with a new dealer from a competing flag on my route. The new dealer told the body shop owner he wasn’t doing a repair correctly. The dealer’s father had owned a body shop for years, and “That’s not how we did it.” As you can imagine, that shop owner didn’t buy from the new dealer.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

One of the most successful dealers

I know was a police officer prior to stepping on a tool truck. I might add that he was an award-winning police officer. He then went on to become an extraordinary district manager. He’s currently back on a tool truck as a Top 10 dealer.

There’s a lot to be said for being self-employed. For every successful dealer who came into the business as a technician, I can show you an equal number of success stories from dealers without relevant industry experience.

The mobile tool business could be the vehicle that provides you with an affordable road map to success. With good credit and a reasonable amount of capital, this business could provide opportunities only limited by your own personal skills and ability. If you think it might be a good fit, reach out to all the companies for more information.

You’ll also find that most dealers are happy to relate their own personal experience. Don’t let your lack of industry experience keep you from exploring what might be your perfect career.

BRIAN FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Providing premium service and his continuous “close to perfect” attitude, he achieved his goal of being a Top 10 dealer for Cornwell Quality Tools. He and his wife of over 44 years recently retired, moving from Oregon to the endless summers of Beverly Hills, Florida.

TALES FROM THE ROAD

The long road to building real relationships

For this distributor, long-term success has less to do with what’s on the truck and more to do with how you show up.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Kevin Wampler operates as an independent tool distributor serving a route largely centered on heavy duty customers. His stops include equipment shops, rental fleets, paving companies, and semi truck operations — environments where downtime is expensive, schedules are tight, and patience for sales talk is limited. Long before stepping into tool distribution, Wampler spent years working as a technician himself, gaining firsthand experience in the kinds of shops he now serves on a daily basis.

From an early age, Wampler knew he wanted to work on race cars. That goal shaped much of his early career and eventually led him into NASCARrelated work in the mid 2000s, where he experienced high-pressure environments and demanding mechanical work. The pace was fast, expectations were high, and performance mattered. When sponsorship challenges disrupted the racing world in 2008, that chapter came to an end and left him searching for direction.

“I felt lost,” Wampler says. “That was all I had focused on for so many years. When it didn’t pan out, I didn’t know what was next.”

What follows is a stretch of time spent working in a variety of shop

environments, including motorcycle and heavy duty facilities. While the work provided stability, the desire to build something of his own never fully went away. Over time, the idea of working for himself shifted from a passing thought to a clear goal.

“I got to the point where I knew I couldn’t keep working for someone else,” he says. “I needed to do something on my own.”

LEARNING THE BUSINESS WITHOUT A SAFETY NET

Wampler began selling tools in 2017 after taking over the lease of an existing truck. Much of the learning process was self-directed, shaped by daily experience rather than a defined roadmap. He leaned heavily on conversations with other distributors in the area, asking questions, observing how they operate, and learning through trial and error.

The financial realities of starting out surfaced quickly. One moment in particular stands out. A customer placed a special order for a toolbox, but by the time it arrived weeks later,

the customer’s financial situation had changed, and the order was refused. The cost landed on Wampler in the end.

“After paying for that toolbox, we had about $200 left in our company account. At that point, I thought, ‘We’re done,’” he says.

There was no dramatic turning point that followed. No quick fix or overnight recovery. Instead, the response was quiet and methodical. Spending tightened, unnecessary inventory orders paused, and the focus shifted to showing up consistently and doing the work at hand.

“I honestly don’t even know how we got out of it. We just kept working,” Wampler says.

That period left a lasting impression and shaped how he approaches the business. Every decision, from inventory to customer conversations, is now made with a heightened awareness of risk, responsibility, and the importance of staying grounded.

TALES FROM THE ROAD

BECOMING INDEPENDENT

In 2024, Wampler made the decision to operate on his own as an independent distributor. Leading up to that transition, he had multiple conversations with his wife and his father about what independence means, both personally and professionally.

Shortly after making that move, his father passed away.

As Wampler adjusted to running the business independently, he was also navigating personal loss.

“It’s nerve-wracking, frustrating, hard, but also exciting all at the same time,” he says.

Around that same time, customers began reaching out as word spread that he was operating independently. Shops he had worked with previously called asking him to stop by, help out, or bring tools to their locations.

“They’re calling me, saying, ‘Can you come over here?’ ‘Can you come over there?’ ‘We want you,’” Wampler says.

For him, those calls were not about convenience or familiarity. They reflected years of showing up, being present, and building relationships that extended beyond transactions.

RELATIONSHIPS BEFORE TOOLS

When Wampler talks about what sets him apart, he does not point to his product mix or pricing strategy.

“I don’t see myself as a tool distributor first. That’s secondary,” he says. “My primary job is to learn [from] people and do life with them.”

That mindset shapes how he approaches every stop on his route. Conversations rarely begin with product pitches. Instead, they focus on how customers are doing, how work has been going, or what challenges they are facing both inside and outside the shop. Tools enter the conversation naturally when they are relevant.

That approach leads to opportunities he does not anticipate. In one instance, a local school shop purchased a piece of equipment through another channel. When issues arose after installation, the shop turned to Wampler for help. Rather than walking away, he took the time to research the issue, work through the necessary steps, and ultimately become a dealer for the equipment already in place.

“I don’t plan on becoming an equipment dealer. I just want to help them fix the problem,” he says.

TOOLS THAT FIT THE WORK

While relationships come first, Wampler is deliberate about the products he carries. His core offerings include GripEdge for extractor and fastener solutions, Power Probe and KPS for electrical diagnostics, and Ko-ken for sockets and ratchets. Additional products are added based on the specific needs of his customers rather than what happens to be trending.

Instead of pushing what is on the truck, he focuses on understanding the problems customers are trying to solve.

“Everybody has tools,” he says. “What matters is understanding what the customer actually needs.”

LESSONS FROM THE ROAD

For distributors just starting out, Wampler’s advice is straightforward and rooted in experience.

“Show up. Do what you say you are going to do. Be real,” he says.

He avoids talking about tools unless customers bring them up, choosing instead to build rapport first. Over time, those conversations turn into trust, and trust turns into long-term relationships.

Looking ahead, Wampler and his wife are evaluating future opportunities, including a potential spinoff venture. While details are still being worked out, the philosophy remains unchanged.

“We’re just going to keep showing up. That’s what’s worked so far,” he says.

On the road, success rarely comes from shortcuts. In Wampler’s case, it is built through consistency, honesty, and a willingness to meet people where they are.

Inside Wampler's truck is a variety of tools from GripEdge, Power Probe, Ko-ken, and KPS.
