One of the primary lessons learned from DOE’s November 2014 Solid-State Lighting Market Development Workshop is a basic one: when talking about the transition to LED, we’re talking about a whole lot more than just a better light bulb. Researchers, designers, utility program managers and market-research analysts offered attendees a vision of connected, intelligent lighting that could actually boost our health, along with an understanding of the challenges that must be addressed if that vision is to become a reality.

Osram Sylvania’s Lori Brock agrees that the industry needs to reconsider its long-held focus on components and turn, instead, toward users and their lighting requirements. Maximizing the potential of SSL’s addressability and controllability, she says, will require the industry to “spend a lot less time thinking about bulbs and more time thinking about people.” •

OLED Making Its Way to Market If commercial availability is a sign of market viability, then organic LED (OLED) fixtures have made a major breakthrough. This fall, Home Depot began selling two OLED luminaires manufactured by Acuity Brands, the largest lighting manufacturer in the U.S., at prices ranging from $199 to $299. Acuity, among several other makers, has had high-end, mostly commercial products available for several years. Now the Chalina surface-mount and Aedan sconce/pendant are among the first mass-market offerings of the rapidly developing technology.

These product introductions come as manufacturers here and abroad are scrambling to improve OLED performance and lower its cost. As part of its larger SSL efforts, the U.S. Department of Energy is tracking and promoting OLED development. In its most recent Manufacturing Roadmap, the DOE notes that lighting manufacturers are breaking away from previous efforts to ride the coattails of OLED display makers to develop lighting-specific fabrication processes. The roadmap targeted three specific areas for increased research investment:  Integrated OLED substrates  Organic layer deposition  Assembly operations.

In the meantime, though, several market-research firms remain bullish on the prospects of OLED lighting. IDTechEx forecasts the annual U.S. market for related products reaching $1.9 billion by 2025—with the caveat that this market won’t begin rapid expansion until 2019. NanoMarkets sees the market hitting $1.4 billion by 2019, citing recent investments by Philips, Osram and Konica Minolta in production facilities as reasons for their optimism.•

New LED Lighting Rocks Philly Mainstay The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park has hosted musical performances for nearly 40 summers. A recent facility improvements program included upgrades to the visual and lighting systems. “The new lighting was critical to the overall renovation work that was undertaken to enhance the evening outdoor musical experience for the patrons,” says Kirsten Kent Carangi, RA, principal of BEAM, the project’s lighting designer.

BEAM’s program encompassed illumination for the entire exterior of the site outside of the shed.

BEAM designed the space with indirect lighting wherever possible, placing concealed egress lighting using a continuous product from LEDLinear under a meticulously detailed curb design along the pathways. High-output illuminated LED handrails from ETI, Inc. provide lighting along the stairs and have smooth continuous dimming for use during performances, egress, or clean-up.

In 2014, Banco del Credito de Peru (BCP) wanted to update its façade to celebrate a modern and progressive Peruvian society and to reflect their new brand identity of transparency. BCP commissioned designers Claudia Paz and Nicholas Cheung to translate these themes into a lighting design. The three dimensional façade consists of an LED canvas, an interactive LED outdoor podium with multi-touch sensors, and an interactive lighting control system. Paz used Philips Color Kinetics ArchiPoint iColor Powercore for the outermost layer, and the company’s iColor Flex MX gen2 to compose the remaining layers.

The result is two distinct grids, one bright, bold, and sparse for dramatic moments; and the other concentrated and subtle for nuanced sculptural effects. Passersby can choose from eight interactive shows that use both light and sound, including effects such as constellations, fireworks, and rain. “We wanted to create a permanent installation on an urban scale instead of just a media façade,” says Paz. This canvas, she notes, forges a unique connection between the bank and community by engaging city dwellers.

“Each show intuitively steers people to express themselves,” says Paz, creating a space for social participation for people of all ages. ”Our vision was to give people a new way of seeing, feeling and experiencing their perception of self and the freedom to explore new sensations,” she says. “Seeing this conversation between a person and light, in my mind, is magical!”
