Lightfair is a time to fall in love again with lighting, especially cool stuff associated with LED.

Proportions of installations that LEDs have made possible range from the delicate—lacelike chandeliers in New York—to expansive—a flower-inspired 131-ft.-wide overhead pillar in Johannesburg—to bold, as seen in retail and office projects in Paris, Antwerp, Rochester, N.Y, and suburban Seattle.

Lighting is a major factor in pushing the exterior visual envelope, with bold statements above, as in the Sky Mirror project in Australia—or at ground level, by integrating it with its surrounding for the Bear Canyon Arroyo Pedestrian Bridge, the Laverstoke Mill Glasshouses, and Debenham’s on Oxford Street.

Lighting designers are creating lightscapes by applying appropriate levels of drama to enhance new and existing examples of the built environment, be it a home on a private Caribbean island, or a park on the iconic landmark Gibraltar, near Spain.

Lighting expressed as sculpture, once a comparatively rare form of art primarily shown in museums, has now crossed the line for interior and exterior individual installations that are both artistic in concept and functional in performance.

At first glance, Studio 1Thousand’s illuminated creation has the appearance of a lacey tapestry, both contemporary and timeless. To achieve the airy, open-work fabric effect, the design appears to be a woven fabric that is in reality 219 vertical strands imbedded with 5,243 double-sided individual white LED chips. In total, the sculptural hanging uses 1,131 watts, with a lumen output of 71,304. RUSH Design was the fabricator for the final placement.

The Jane, Antwerp, Belgium Architect: Piet Boon Lighting: PSLAB Adaptively reusing a nineteenth-century chapel into a 21st century restaurant was successfully accomplished with the installation of a massive, 1,764-lb. LED-lit chandelier. The Jane occupies a 4,350-sq.-ft., stand-alone red brick building that had been shuttered for 22 years until its potential as a dining destination was conceived by a pair of Michelin-star chefs, Sergio Herman and Nick Bril.

They retained Piet Boon to handle the interior architecture with its vaulted ceiling rising in some places to 38 feet, and PSLAB to make the space, which is partially below grade, come alive with lighting.

Both design teams agreed that their plan would enhance the existing qualities and materials of the original space by introducing products made of stone, leather, and oak. The main dramatic statement is made by the room-spanning, black-painted tubular LED-lit chandelier with a 39×30-ft. radius.

Secured from a single suspension point, the chandelier dips to nine feet above the floor, bringing its mass to a human scale. A total of 150 of the chandelier’s tubes are fitted with 4.54/W LED pin lamps. Other lighting in the space is by halogen

BMW Showroom, Paris Architect: Carbondale Architects Lighting Design: Mindseye Lighting Ltd. Located on Avenue George V, home of such ultra-high fashion purveyors as Armani, Bulgari, Hermés, and Brioni, among others, it follows that the BMW showroom should have the same haute couture image. Displaying one car each in the two large front windows emphasizes their luxury status and provides views into the art-inspired showroom interior.

The window settings that feature an angled mirror hung above the car is wrapped on three sides by a frosted glass media wall comprised of 232.000 LEDs. Above each BMW inside the showroom, Carbondale Architects and lighting designers Mindseye Lighting Ltd collaborated on creating a disc of Barrisol stretch membrane that is backit by programmable LEDs. Attached to the 28-ft. diameter rim of the overhead discs and connected on an angle to the quartz terrazzo floor are custom-designed aluminum extrusion rods with LED lighting elements within each side, facing inward and outward.

LED lamps facing outward are controlled via interactive signals from laser sensors in the ceiling, triggered to brighten as a visitor approaches the vehicle. Concealed spotlights in the rims are

Lighting can improve circadian rhythms, short- and long-term alertness, mood, perception, visual acuity, productivity, sleep and general wellbeing—thus lighting should be treated much more than just a commodity. This notion is known as human centric lighting (HCL), It factors daylight and appropriate electric light, usually tunable, which means lights can be dimmed, and its CCT changed, to address any and all of the above. In fact, light intensity and CCT can be changed at different times of the day for different tasks to optimize performance and well-being.

Back to the question of lighting’s worth, it makes a big difference if lighting is considered a commodity, with the priority being low wattage, and the quality goals simply being providing sufficient light levels, good uniformity and low glare. If, however, the greater worth of lighting is included, the sky is the limit because HCL stands to be the greatest innovation in lighting since Edison invented the bulb.

Da Vinci Dental, Bellevue, Washington Architects/Lighting Design: Bayllis Architects If Bellevue, Wash. would not have had a “Pedestrian Oriented Footage” code requirement for the glass-enclosed, 1,800-sq.-ft. ground floor tenant space in the Elements Too glass tower, the lighting design for the Da Vinci Dental practice might have been different. However, the city decreed that the occupant of the space provide a high degree of visual interest to appeal to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

After remaining vacant for five years, a lease was singed for the space. Not for an apparel store, a restaurant, nor beauty salon, but by Dr. Beau Keller, a dentist who considers the location for his practice a competitive edge in the marketplace. According to architect Bree Carey of Bayllis Architecture, “…the effect of using light to artistically activate the street level met the share goals of all parties involved…offering positive effects for the surrounding streetscape.” He reports that even before opening, people stopped to admire the light show inside the office and take photos.

The floor plan provides for a showroom, sales and reception areas, two exam rooms, employee lounge, and multi-use space. St. Edward Catholic Church, Keizer, Oregon Architect: Di Loreto Architecture Lighting Design: Di Loreto Architecture The parishioners of St. Edward located in the Salem suburb of Keizer had outgrown its original buildings. They called upon Di Loreto Architecture to design a new church that could hold up to 750 in a contemporary light-filled environment.

With its vaulted exposed wood ceiling and large clerestory windows, the design of the sanctuary of the 12,000-sq.-ft. building communicates the natural setting of the region. LEDs are used for downlights and spots along with other light sources.

Lighting that glows from inside of the clear glass top section of the free-standing exterior bell-tower imparts a beacon-like silhouette. Two styles of Bega LED luminaires are positioned to beam upward, installed at the tower’s opaque base.

Store Design: Balaity Property Enhancement Lighting Design: Integrated Lighting Concepts When the store relocated to a 4,000-sq.-ft. building in Ventura, Calif., owner Debbie Fox wanted a design that would be both sophisticated and welcoming. Her vision was a setting that reflects the community, where the median income is approximately 20% higher than for the state.

For lighting designer Bernard Bauer, the program—the store, offices and a workroom—met three main criteria: interior architecture involving dropped ceiling sections; illumination levels tailored to different groups of Fox’s product selection; and California’s Title 24 requirements for the store, workrooms and offices. LEDs were used throughout.

Diamonds are illuminated with 4000K 95+CRI light sources, while warm-tone jewelry and accessories are displayed with 3500K sources rated at 90 CRI. Art work presented against a redbrick wall and other wall surfaces is accented with SORRA’s Vivid 3000K, 95 CRI lamps.

Overhead are flush-mounted PAR38 multi-heads and square single lamp 3500K 90 CRI luminaires. In the workshops, illumination ranges from 40-50 FC for general lighting to 450 FC using task lights at the bench. In the offices and workroom, Solatubes introduce natural light.

The bridge’s original induction lighting system was well passed its prime, and MnDOT officials decided LED was worth investigating. Beyond more efficient, and better caliber illumination, MnDOT also wanted a more technologically advanced system that would allow for dimming and addressability on a fixture level. The solution presented itself in the form of Lumenpulse’s Lumentalk technology, which digitally controls fixtures over existing AC power lines. One Central Park, Sydney, Australia Architects: Ateliers Jean Nouvel, in collaboration with PTW Lighting Concept: Yann Kersalé Cantilevered from level 29 of the mixed-use One Central Park East tower in downtown Sydney is an architectural heliostat that combines 320 reflective mirror panels, each fitted with LEDs. Starting at dusk, the heliostat, constructed by Kennovations, becomes a giant canvas hung horizontally, open on three sides. By day, natural sunlight is beamed down into the retail atrium and the landscaped terraces.

The overall heliostat system is 79 ft. wide × 92 ft. long × 5 ft. high. Each heliostat panel is motorized and programmed to track the sun and reflect sunlight toward predetermined targets.

Individual reflector panels that are five feet square are embedded with 9 LEDs, each with a unique URL address. Images formed by the 2,880 tri-chromatic LEDs are representative of the reflection of the sun on the water from nearby Sydney Harbor.

Kersalé, who identifies himself as a “project artist,” says he chooses night as his palette. He regards his art work in cities as a form of urban renewal. Sea Mirror’s public art performances comprise five 30-second scenes, played in rotation from dusk to 10 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday nights, year-round.

Several manufacturers currently offer tunable LED troffers, troffer kits, drum fixtures, recessed cans, and desk mount and undercabinet task lights that have about the same lumens, wattage, lumens per watt, rated life and warranty as equivalent typical fixed CCT LED products.

Pricing is often 0% - 33% extra for tunable LED products. Some tunable task lights are actually less expensive than some fixed CCT ones.

There are extra costs for manual or programmed controls for them. Control systems are being developed that people can enter information including if they are morning larks or night owls, if they typically have post lunch dips, etc. The lighting will automatically dim and change CCT throughout the day.

Gibraltar’s government commissioned the transformation of a former parking lot into a park. Within the central area are perimeter plantings, benches, and monolithic water feature columns. Private Residence, Island in the Caribbean Architect: Studio Morsa Lighting Design: 521 Atelier Planning the lighting for a 40,000-sq.-ft. home constructed on cliffs bordering the Caribbean is based around meeting the lifestyle of the occupants, and responding to the environment.

Divided into indoor and outdoor living areas (22,000 and 18,000 sq. ft., respectively), the lighting program by Claudia Librett of 521 Atelier primarily utilized LEDs. High energy cost was one of the considerations, as the power source for the residence comes from another island.

Sub-tropical weather conditions—heavy rain and intense wind—the threat of earthquakes, and insect-resistant materials were detailing considerations not typically encountered in for clients in other climates. Interior teak ceilings in a grid ranging from 14 ft. to 16 ft. were fitted with recessed adjustable LED downlights. Custom bollards on the deck have a circular metal base of marine-grade stainless steel and three slender curved metal supports for the 2W LEDs enclosed at the top. Under severe wind conditions, they can be removed and taken inside.

In the pool and 3,600-sq.-ft. cabana area, the glow from the luminaires and their reflection creates additional drama to the setting and the architectural forms. In the open, column-supported cabana ceiling are 1W and 2W recessed exterior LEDs. Access to the cabana adds a geometric layer of circular stepping stones outlined by LEDs wrapped with flexible underwater acrylic cords.

Nepenthes Paisleyi, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Architect: Corson Studios LLC By day, a quartet of undulating 16-ft.-high LED-lit, painted fiberglass sculptures stand serenely poised in a circle at the entrance to the residential community of Paisley near Edmonton. However, the origin of their shape is less placid. According to sculptor Dan Corson, they were inspired by the carnivorous plant Nepenthese. “Paisleyi” is the Latinized word of the last name of Brian Paisley, founder of the Edmonton Fringe Festival.

An internal steel spine supports wrapped layers of translucent fiberglass containing the LEDs. During the day, the surface of the sculptures exhibit a monochromatic black-and-white color palette of swirling geometrics. With the setting sun, they are animated by dynamic programmed patterns of Nichia RGB SMT chips.

Tesseract, Traveling exhibit Architect: 1024 Architecture Lighting Design: 1024 Architecture Conceived as a demountable cube-shape open scaffold, Tesseract has brought its high-powered moving light show that has been a pop-up attraction in such cities as Vancouver, Prague, and Eindhoven. Its 3-D moving light array setup reacts to sound to turn in 360° radius.

Visitors are encouraged to step inside to activate the light show controlled by a DMX system programmed by MADmapper, developed by the designers at 1024 Architecture. Two light sources perform sequences that illuminate the surroundings: Martin’s 16x Atomic 3000 stroboscope and Clay Packy’s 65x Sharpy. To illuminate the multi-level Tesseract structure, the spectacle is enhanced by color changing of 12 lines of flexible RGB line, each 49 ft. long.
