Dear Episcopal Day Community, As we reflect on the 2022-23 school year, we dedicate this annual report in celebration of our entire community. We can be proud that through our work together we have successfully led with our core values of inquiry, respect, service, and compassion. Many factors contributed to our transformative year including your support, generosity, and trust.

We would again like to thank Ralph Wales, Head of School (2020-23), who expertly steered us through one of the most challenging times this institution will ever see - a pandemic. As I referenced in my letter in June, Ralph made us a more confident institution through his leading by example and challenging norms along the way. We were privileged as a community to bid farewell to Ralph in celebrating his remarkable career in education.

This past year, some notable focal areas of Episcopal Day’s leadership included successfully identifying and hiring a world class Head of School, the continuance of philanthropy and maintaining our strong financial position, advancing our work around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), assessing our current physical footprint, and supporting Ralph and team in meeting their vision and goals.

In the Fall of 2022, we announced Quincey Grieve as our next Head of School beginning July 2023. Quincey comes to Episcopal Day with over twenty-five years of experience as a school leader and instructor. Under her leadership our school will flourish and thrive. I personally enjoyed working alongside Search Co-Chair, Steve LeSieur and the entire search committee. We again thank them for their due diligence, care, and stewardship towards reaching our ideal outcome.

The 2022-23 Mustang Fund reached $1.17 million with donations from 94% of our current families and 100% of our trustees. This exceeded the $900,000 goal and was made possible through the steadfast effort of our Development Committee, led by Chair Chris Chaudoir, the work of our Mustang Fund Co-Chairs and Class Captains, and the leadership of Kendra Mastain, Director of Development. Our hope is to continue on this strong philanthropic trajectory.

The Finance Committee, under the guidance of Chair Stu McLaughlin and Cherie Patterson, Director of Finance and Operations, has ensured the financial stability of Episcopal Day School and positioned us for sustained growth and success.

Thank you to the DEI Committee, led by James Evangelista, Cheryl Adenekan, Director of DEI, and Ralph Wales for advancing the work outlined within the DEI Strategic Plan, approved in May 2022. As outlined in the plan, consultant Lynn Bowman met with a faculty cohort to advance teaching methodology that supports a range of perspectives in classroom discussions and curricular materials.The DEI Committee also worked to move us toward creating a powerful vision statement draft which we will look to enthusiastically share in the 2023-24 school year.

Along with the work of DEI advancement, the Board of Trustees is also committed to reviewing and assessing its effectiveness as well as ensuring that the compilation of elected trustees invites diverse thought to the table.

Governance Chair, Lija McBride, along with the Trusteeship committee, led with this commitment and successfully welcomed four impressive trustees who have begun their work as of July 2023.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee and Master Plan Task Force, both led by Kirk DeClark, Ralph Wales, and The Reverend Eric Hinds engaged with architectural firm, Ratcliff Architects, to assess how we currently use our physical space and met with all constituents to understand the needs and desires of our community. We thank them for spearheading these discussions and look forward to the work continuing.

I am grateful to have had the privilege to lead as Board Chair in this third year and would like to thank our former and current trustees, and all of our Board Committee volunteers for their thoughtful leadership. Thank you also to my partner, Erin Ruger, Day School Parent Association President, and her team, for invigorating the ethos of this community.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the entire Episcopal Day School community – students, parents, teachers, staff, and leaders. The sun within our logo reminds us to carry our traditions, aspirations, and values through each day. It is hand drawn to reflect how this community is imperfectly perfect. As we propel forward we are reminded to celebrate where we have come from and thank those who led us to this point.

It is exciting to anticipate what our “next” day will bring.

Dear Episcopal Day School Community, Under the outstanding leadership of Ralph Wales, Episcopal Day School thrived during the 2022-23 school year. I was honored to be named as the next Head of School in the fall of 2022 and valued the opportunity to work closely with Ralph, the Board of Trustees, and the transition team over the course of the school year. Tim and I are grateful for the warm welcome the Episcopal Day community has extended to our family. We are proud to be Mustangs!

The academic and cocurricular program continued to grow during the 2022-23 school year. We welcomed two new Division Directors, Doug Jolly in Middle School and Katie McDougall in Lower School. New mathematics programs were implemented in both the Lower and Middle Schools, supported by Math Specialist, Mary Kimbell, and veteran Lower School teacher, Louise Yapp, engaged full-time in reviewing the library collection to ensure a diverse and inclusive collection. In recognition of Louise’s remarkable tenure at the school and in celebration of the beautifully updated collection, the Louise Yapp Collection, made possible by our generous community, was dedicated in June of 2023.

A hallmark of the Episcopal Day experience continued to be our robust overnight field trips, with our eighth grade students beginning their year with a retreat at an Episcopal camp in Sonoma County and our seventh grade students launching their year with a week-long outdoor education trip to Yosemite. In the spring, the fourth grade traveled to the Gold Country, the fifth grade to Big Sur, the sixth grade to Pinnacles National Park, the seventh grade to their retreat at The Bishop’s Ranch, and the eighth grade to Washington, D.C. The depth of these experiences is rare and profoundly impactful for our students.

Our Athletics program thrived, with record participation and 172 Episcopal Day Mustangs played on one or more of our 30 sports teams throughout the year.

Under the leadership of Tish Scola, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management, enrollment was strong, with 304 Mustangs in pre-kindergarten through eighth grades. We graduated 37 eighth grade students, who are at high schools across the peninsula, the wider Bay Area, and beyond.

Over the course of the 2022-23 school year, Episcopal Day School prepared exceptionally well for our California Association of Independent Schools accreditation, a process that all CAIS schools engage in every seven years. The accreditation process requires a comprehensive self study, a vehicle for deep-dive review of every aspect of school life. All constituencies in the school engaged in this process, producing an invaluable document which illuminates both our strengths and our areas for growth. I am grateful for the extensive work that went into this process. The self study captures the uniqueness of the Episcopal Day experience, highlighting the beauty of our close community and the joy in our student-teacher relationships, and it sets us up beautifully for the strategic planning process, which will begin in earnest in January 2024.

During his tenure, Ralph worked tirelessly with Director of DEI Cheryl Adenekan and Chair of the DEI Committee of the Board, James Evangelista, to advance our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our DEI strategic plan was finalized in the spring of 2022, with Goal One of the plan to complete a DEI Vision Statement. A small task force focused on the Vision Statement over the course of the year, positioning us to be ready to finalize the statement, and Consultant Lynn Bowman worked closely with faculty, staff, and Board members to develop a DEI lens in all aspects of school life.

The 2022-23 school year was another banner year for parent participation in the life of Episcopal Day School. I’m awed by the commitment of the Day School Parents Association (DSPA) and grateful to Erin Ruger, DSPA President, for her leadership. From the Fall Festival to the May Day celebration, the DSPA stands side by side with the Episcopal Day team – always creating and innovating, always rolling up their sleeves to make magic for our students.

The Mustang Fund reached a record high, with $1.17 million raised, with 94 percent of our faculty, 94 percent of families, and 100 percent of our Board contributing. Thank you to Chair of the Development Committee Chris Chaudoir, Director of Development Kendra Mastain, the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, and our loyal class captains for your transformational work.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to engage so deeply with Episcopal Day School as I anticipated my transition to Head of School. I want to thank, especially, Elaine Chang and Meghan Crowell for chairing the Transition Committee and thinking of everything my family and I could have possibly needed. I also extend a heartfelt thank you to Ralph for his unfailing partnership and wisdom. And a special thank you goes to Nicole Magaddino, Chair of the Board of Trustees, for her vision, leadership, and support. Our school is thriving with Nicole as the pillar of strength behind our Board and in support of everyone on the Episcopal Day team.

As we celebrate the achievements of the 2022-23 school year, it is important to acknowledge the collective effort of our entire school community — students, parents, faculty, and the Trustees. Together, we are creating an educational experience that is truly exceptional. Your generous support allows Episcopal Day to flourish. “ Today is our day. What will we do?“ do?“ As the 2023 school year came to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we've shared and the accomplishments that have defined this academic chapter. On behalf of the class of 2023, our entire academic team want to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, guidance, and generosity.

This year has been a testament to the dedication of our educators, the resilience and brilliance of our students, and the invaluable contributions of our community. Each milestone and triumph was made possible by the collective effort of everyone involved, and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved together.

The class of 2023 has embraced the mission of our school—to inspire intellectual curiosity, instill confidence, nurture moral courage, and build character that prepares students to be leaders of positive change in the world. Throughout the year, we have witnessed the manifestation of these ideals in the actions and accomplishments of our fellow students. They have served their community through service learning events, expanded their worldviews in their classes, built a community for themselves, and reflected on the values and lessons they have learned in their Chapel Talks. It is a testament to the transformative power of an academically challenging course of study and a community of people who have dedicated themselves to helping them grow not just as students but as citizens of the world.

Our core values—Academic Excellence, Service to Others, Respect for Diversity, and Compassionate Community—have served as the guiding principles that shape our interactions, decisions, and contributions. These values are not just words on paper; they are the foundation upon which our educational journey is built. The class of 2023 is a testament to that, and with admiration for the path paved by their predecessors, the class of 2024 is poised to carry forward the torch, building upon the foundation laid by the class of 2023 and shaping their own legacy in the process.

This next section is dedicated to celebrating the moments and accomplishments that made our past year so memorable. We could not have done it without you.

A Year in Review

On October 20 and 21, Episcopal Day welcomed our students' Grandparents and Special Friends to our annual Grandfriends’ Day. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to be able to shift away from the virtual celebrations and bring back this beloved school tradition to our campuses. We knew it would be a joyful day when we saw our students waving with excitement to their loved ones as they walked into our courtyard.

Students on our Baldwin campus shared their classrooms and learning spaces with their guests and proudly talked about their daily adventures at Episcopal Day. Together, they participated in many activities, including interviewing one another, playing cards, watching presentations, reading, and exploring the school hallways to see the creatively decorated bulletin boards.

The morning started with a welcome breakfast at Julia Beylard Hall, followed by Chapel. Lower school students lifted everyone's spirits with musical performances led by music teachers Maggie Eggert, and Dace Samta.

On the second day, Grandfriends of our Pre-K and Kindergarten students were blessed with a beautiful, sunny morning and enjoyed breakfast outside at Charles House.

Our young learners blew their guests away with the sweetest performance of the popular song-- You Are My Sunshine, followed by their favorite Halloween songs.

Episcopal Day sponsored our first free Community Ice Skating Day in November

Episcopal Day welcomed over 1,200 skaters to the San Mateo ice rink in Central Park. The event took place on a beautiful sunny winter day and brought the Episcopal Day community and neighbors together to enjoy over six hours of free skating. Guests glided over the ice in the sunshine during the day and under the stars at night. Students from local elementary schools had a half-day and joined in on the fun early, filling the rink with cheerful smiles faster than we expected. To top off the event, we added some hot chocolate and created the perfect community skating day recipe.

NOVEMBER

Our Admissions team planned Episcopal Day on Ice to promote the Episcopal Day way and offer prospective families and neighbors a look into our most valuable asset— our inclusive and joyful school community. We hope this is the first of many community events in partnership with the City of San Mateo. What an ‘ice way to kickstart the holiday season!

Donut Day is an annual event that brings Episcopal Day's families, students, and faculty together in a spirit of community, friendship, and fun.

This year, the event happened on February 15 on the Mustang Meadow of our Baldwin campus.

Everyone enjoyed delicious donuts and coffee while listening to the music of Mustang parent and volunteer DJ Tim Tan. We were delighted to see our students’ smiles and feel their joy as they munched on donuts and cherished each other's company.

Students won raffle prizes, most notably a chance to throw a pie at their advisors.

Proceeds from Donut Day will be used to purchase books for the African Library Project, led by our librarian Jeff Paulson.

We genuinely thank our parent volunteers for their commitment and dedication to making Donut Day a successful event.

Their efforts have allowed us to provide our students with an enjoyable and meaningful community experience.

We look forward to celebrating Donut Day together again next year!

It starts with a beat and ends with a mission.

Hip Hop 4 Change came to Episcopal Day to teach students about the powerful, culture-shifting Hip Hop movement.

Hip Hop 4 Change is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization that has taught over 25,000 students across the nation and the world.

Their educational program's goal is to inspire youth to have a new look at Hip Hop as a vehicle of healthy self-expression and community empowerment, as a means to navigate through the challenges that they are facing.

Our middle schoolers were excited to learn how hiphop can be leveraged for activism and social justice.

Episcopal Day was transformed into the spooky, scary world of Marshall Brickman and Rick Elise in May as students starred in the spring production of The Addams Family.

The JBH stage came alive with a hauntingly delightful performance of "The Addams Family, directed by our talented Middle School English and Drama Teacher, Thomas Bazar. The entire production was a testament to the creativity and dedication of our students, who not only embraced their roles on stage but also played a pivotal part in bringing the macabre world of the Addams family to life.

The collaborative efforts extended beyond the spotlight, as students took charge of the set design and wardrobe construction. From the eerie mansion to the eccentric costumes, the attention to detail was incredible to say the least, and as the curtains rose on the opening night, the audience was treated to a spectacle that surpassed expectations. The production was a collaborative masterpiece that celebrated the spirit of creativity, teamwork, and the deep love for the performing arts within our middle school community.

May Day, one of our school’s most beloved traditions, is our community’s way of honoring the graduating class of eighth graders, and to welcome the season of spring with dance. As with every May Day, a special magic was in the air.

This year, we continued our tradition of cross-grade school families making paper bouquets and boutonnieres for their eighth graders. They were beautiful tokens of our love for the graduates.

May Day began with a special all school Chapel service led by the eighth graders. The seventh graders assumed the mantle of leadership with their role as hosts and acolytes. In addition to helping set up, they lead the festive parade into the church. Eighth graders shared memories of their time at Episcopal Day, gratitude for family, friends, and teachers, and they offered prayers for the school and one another as they prepared to move on. The students’ wisdom, poise, and leadership was a meaningful testament to how they’ve matured at Episcopal Day.

Following Chapel, each grade from pre-kindergarten to sixth performed a dance on the lawn in honor of the eighth graders. We were amazed by the students’ moves, and some faculty even joined in on the fun. The final dance was, as always, the traditional Maypole ribbon dance performed by pre-k and sixth graders.

May Day exemplifies what is unique about our school — the undeniable love, support, and leadership across grade levels, and the powerful feeling that arises as we gather together as a community in celebration of one another. It was a special moment to once again see all of our families on Mustang Meadow laughing and smiling, watching the dances, and honoring the eighth graders.

Class of 2023 Graduation Ready to embark on new adventures beyond the familiar walls that had nurtured their academic growth, the Class of 2023 bid farewell to Episcopal Day within the halls of our cherished sanctuary in a heartfelt celebration of academic achievement.

The air was charged with a palpable sense of accomplishment as graduates, with their yellow bouquets and boutonnieres, gathered to mark the culmination of their educational journey. Illuminated by the soft glow of stained glass windows, the ceremony echoed with the inspiring words of school leadership and the joyous cheers of families, alumni, and friends.

We would like to wish a warm Episcopal Day congratulations to the Class of 2023. We are so proud of all you have accomplished, and know that you will do great things in your bright futures ahead.

CHAPEL TALKS

Last year's Chapel Talks were a powerful culmination of the eighth-grade journey, showcasing a diverse array of personal narratives that left a lasting impact on our school community. Students fearlessly opened up about their struggles and triumphs, turning vulnerability into strength.

A few talks delved into the theme of overcoming racial adversity and imposter syndrome, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by individuals, and emphasizing the importance of resilience. The courage to share such personal stories undoubtedly fostered empathy among peers. Perfectionism and disappointment were explored in other talks, with students recounting their experiences of overcoming the pressures of unrealistic standards. These stories served as a reminder that setbacks are a natural part of growth and that selfcompassion is key.

Throughout the talks, the eighth graders embodied the qualities of vulnerability and self-acceptance, becoming powerful voices of leadership within the community. The supportive atmosphere was palpable, with classmates showering each other with affirmations like "good job!" and "congratulations!" Elbow bumps, smiles, and high-fives were exchanged following the talks creating a sense of camaraderie that transcended the chapel ceremony.

Last year's Chapel Talks not only showcased the strength of the eighth-grade class but also left an indelible mark on the school, reinforcing the importance of empathy, support, and embracing individual journeys for collective learning. BOARD OF TRUSTEES INCOMING TRUSTEES KAREN ANDREACCHI Karen’s professional background is in marketing, working for various software and hardware companies in the Bay Area. After having kids, she owned and operated a furniture business for six years until COVID happened.

Today, Karen works part-time as a marketing consultant and volunteers her time with various organizations.

DALE CHANG Dale is the Operating Partner at Scale overseeing the firms Marketing, Platform, Product, and Investment Operations functions. Prior to joining Scale, Dale was a Director at the Alexander Group, a consulting firm specialized in go-tomarket strategy. Dale received an M.B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin – McCombs School of Business and a B.A. in History from University of California, Los Angeles. Dale also serves on the board of the VC Platform Global Community and the Ecosystem Advisory Committee for Visible Hands. In the community, Dale has been a part of the Burlingame Parks and Recreation Commission since 2020.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES INCOMING TRUSTEES REIKO OSAKI Reiko Osaki is the President and CEO of Ikaso Consulting, a firm committed to serving the public interest through the advancement of state government operations. With experience in over 20 states, Reiko leads an innovative team to achieve sustainable results in health and human services, procurement, and contract negotiations. Reiko has served on Stanford University’s Alumni Association Board of Directors, the Trustee Task Force for Minority Alumni Relations, and Chair of the Stanford Associates Board of Governors. She formerly served as a member of the Burlingame School Board’s Parent Leadership Team and the District’s Advisory Council. Reiko and her husband Stephen Chan have three daughters and appreciate experiencing the world through their eyes.

RICK YANG Rick joined NEA in 2007 and is a Partner and Head of the firm's Technology investing practice. His main focus is on fintech and consumer investments. Rick partners closely with founders, building a collaborative and trusted relationship at the earliest stages of a company. Some of his current investments include MasterClass, Omio, Pair, and Plaid. Giving

The fund is vital to ensuring the continued excellence of our children’s Episcopal Day experience and enriches it by: supporting our resources for recruiting and retaining excellent faculty and staff, solidifying our commitment to diversity by enhancing our tuition assistance program, honoring our commitment to staying on the leading edge of advances in educational technology, curriculum, and instruction.

All proceeds from the Mustang Fund are used to support the ongoing operational expenses of the school as needed in the current year or in future years.
