25 Work Gloves 2023 / CERVA

SYNTHETIC MATERIALS

Polyvinyl chloride, PVC, is highly resistant to oils, watersoluble chemicals and wear. Limited protection against organic solvent substances. Remains soft even in cold weather.

Polyurethane, PU, is a breathable material that is resistant to plant-based and animal greases and oils. High wear resistance.

Nitrile is a compound of butadiene and acrylonitrile that is highly resistant to wear. Good protection against oilbased chemicals, such as petrol, oil and lubricants, and many solvents. Dry nitrile gloves provide a firm grip.

Neoprene is not as strong as nitrile, but retains its elasticity well in cold conditions. Protection against oils, greases, organic hydrocarbons and acids.

Amara fibre is a compound of polyamide and polyurethane that also suits people with chromium allergy. Good resistance to wear in dry conditions.

Polyester, PES, is a popular glove material thanks to its good colour resistance, easy maintenance and high resistance to wear. Polyester does not shrink or stretch.

Polyamide (Nylon) is a light material with excellent wear resistance.

LATEX COTTON

Natural rubber, or latex, is a very elastic and wearresistant material. Good protection against alcohols and water-soluble chemicals.

Cotton is a highly breathable material that does not produce static electricity. It feels pleasant against the skin and is mainly used in glove liners and as a lining material.

LEATHER

Top-grain pig leather is porous due to small holes left by the animal’s bristles. Thus, the material is highly breathable but not water-repellent. Softens in use.

Top-grain cow leather is durable and ideal for hard use. Provides a firm grip and decent protection against water.

Split cow leather is used in welding gloves thanks to its excellent thermal insulation capacity.

Top-grain goatskin is a very durable material that is water-repellent and soft thanks to lanolin. Goatskin is ideal for heavy use and tasks where precision and dexterity are necessary.

Top-grain leather is the smooth top side of the skin. Topgrain leather is a soft, durable and water-repellent glove material with a good heat resistance capacity.

Split leather is the inner side of the skin acquired by splitting the skin lengthwise. The surface of the material is uneven and fluffy, providing a firm grip. The surface is porous and it is less resistant to moisture than top-grain leather. At the same time, it is a durable glove material with a better heat resistance capacity than top-grain leather.

INFORMATION ABOUT GLOVE MATERIALS
Work Gloves 2023

Category 1: Protection against minimal hazards only.

The CE mark indicates that the product is compliant with the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment. Gloves that are suitable for, for example, gardening or other light tasks with a minimal risk of injury.

Category 2: Protection against intermediate hazards – all gloves not in category 1 or 3. Protection against mechanical hazards. Intended for more complex use.

In addition to the CE mark, the product is marked with a pictogram indicating the protection properties. These gloves are usually tested according to the standard EN 388. Category-2 gloves are intended to protect the wearer from injuries that are not classified as minimal nor very high.

Category 3: Protection against very serious hazards.

Gloves designed to protect the wearer from serious risks and hazards are used when there is a risk of a serious or permanent injury, for example, when handling aggressive chemicals. The number following the CE mark is the identifier of the accredited institute monitoring the product’s conformity with the relevant standards.

The gloves themselves must not present a risk or hazard.

The pH level of the gloves must be neutral; the pH level of leather gloves should be between 3.5 and 9.5.

The highest permissible level of chromium content is 3 mg/kg (hexavalent chromium).

The manufacturer must indicate if substances known to cause allergies have been used in the glove material.

A Abrasion resistance

The material is sanded under steady pressure. The performance level falls between one and four, depending on how many cycles the glove can handle without breaking. The higher the performance level, the better the abrasion resistance – see the table.

B Circular blade cut resistance (Coupe)

The smallest number of cycles (circular blade) to break the glove material is determined. The performance level falls between one and five with five being the best result.

C Tear resistance

First, the glove is cut. Then, the force (N) required to tear the cut is measured. The property of tear resistance indicates the glove’s mechanical strength. In general, the higher the performance level value, the better. However, a lower performance level is ideal in situations where the glove might get stuck in the working parts of a machine, for example. The performance level is between one and four.

D Puncture resistance

It is determined how much force (N) is required to puncture the glove material with a pin (resembling a nail, not a thin needle). Puncture resistance does not indicate the gloves’ resistance to injection needles. The performance level is between one and four.

E Straight blade cut resistance (TDM)

It is determined how much force is required to cut the glove material with a straight, falling blade. Performance level scale A–F / 2–30 newtons (10 newtons = 1 kg).

F Impact resistance

Impact resistance is tested with an impact force of 5 joules. The test is only conducted on gloves that are resistant against impact and only around the protected area (knuckles). This is a pass/fail test. If the glove passes the test, a ’P’ will be shown on the glove marking.

If a test result is ’0’, the glove falls below the minimum performance level. If any of the test results have an ’X’ next to them, it means that the property in question has not been tested.

GLOVES AGAINST THERMAL RISKS

123456

1 Flammability

The glove material is stretched and lit by using a gas flame. The material must be in contact with the open flame for, at least, 15 seconds. Then, it is measured how long it will take for the material to stop burning or glowing. If there is a risk of the gloves being in contact with open flame, the material must meet the requirements of performance level 3.

2 Contact heat resistance

The glove material is exposed to a heat source between 100 and 500°C. The test measures how long it will take for the glove’s core temperature to rise 10°C higher than the material’s initial temperature (around 25°C). The material must be exposed to heat for, at least, 15 seconds. Level-2 glove material is an exception to these requirements. Level-2 material must endure, at least, 250°C for, at least, 15 seconds until the material’s temperature reaches +35°C.

3 Convective heat resistance

This test determines how long it will take for the temperature of the inner surface of the glove material to rise to 24°C when the material is warmed up with a gas flame (80 Kw/m2).

4 Radiant heat resistance

The glove material is stretched in front of a heat source of 20–40 kW/m2. The average time of thermal transfer of 2.5 kW/m2 is measured. The highest performance level is 4, which means that the glove protects the wearer from radiant heat for, at least, 150 seconds.

5 Small splashes of molten metal

The test is based on the measurement of the number of droplets of molten metal. The test determines the number of molten metal droplets needed to raise the temperature between the material and skin to 40°C. The highest performance level is 4, which is equivalent to, at least, 35 droplets.

6 Large splashes of molten metal

An artificial PVC hood is attached to the inner side of the glove material. Molten iron is then poured on top of the glove material. The test measures how many grammes of molten iron are needed to damage the PVC layer.

The requirements of EN 12477 are a combination of the requirements of standards EN 388 and ISO 23407 / EN 407.

The gloves protect the wearer against splashes of molten metal, short-term exposure to open flames, convective and radiant heat, and mechanical risks, for example.

The gloves are divided into two categories based on their structure and end use – type A and type B.

Type-A gloves provide better heat protection but are not very flexible.

Type-B gloves have a lower heat resistance but are more flexible and provide better dexterity.

The test determines the material’s capacity to conduct cold as well as its isolation capacity (in contact). Three numbers are given next to a pictogram. The first number indicates the material’s resistance to penetrating cold. The second number indicates the material’s resistance to cold when in contact with cold objects. The higher the performance level, the better the material’s isolation capacity. The final number

shows whether water can penetrate the material in 30 minutes (0 = yes, 1 = no).

•A Convective cold (performance level 0–4)

•B Contact cold (0–4)

•C Water penetration (performance level 0 or 1)

EN ISO 374 PROTECTIVE GLOVES AGAINST DANGEROUS CHEMICALS AND MICRO-ORGANISMS

Approximately 15,000 different chemicals are used in industry and households in Finland. Tested and approved protective gloves against chemicals are necessary to protect the wearer from injury. The right choice of gloves depends on the chemical type and how long the chemical will be handled.

PERMEATION

Penetration means the flow of chemicals and micro-organisms that penetrate porous materials, seams, small holes or minor flaws in the glove material.

Permeation means the process of a chemical bypassing the protective material at the molecular level. In addition, if the external surface of the material is porous, it can function as a sponge that sucks up the chemicals. Therefore, it is essential to determine the material’s permeation time.

> 10 minutes level 1 > 120 minutes level 4

> 30 minutes level 2 > 240 minutes level 5

> 60 minutes level 3 > 480 minutes level 6

Protective gloves against chemicals are divided into three types based on their permeation resistance level: type A, type B and type C.
