Conversations at ETI’s ToolTech highlighted how today’s repair process is more connected, and more demanding, than ever before.

fter spending a few days at ETI’s ToolTech in Palm Harbor last month, talking with shop owners, technicians, and tool and equipment manufacturers, it gave me a clearer picture of where the industry really stands right now.

A lot of the topics weren’t new. We have been talking about vehicle complexity, tool access, and training for years, but hearing it directly from the people doing the work every day and seeing how those challenges are playing out in real time made it feel different.

What stood out most is how connected everything has become. Diagnostics, repair procedures, tooling, calibration, none of it lives in its own lane anymore. Shops are not just fixing a problem; they are managing an entire process, and every step matters more than it used to.

ADAS came up often, but not as a standalone topic. It was part of a bigger conversation around workflow and responsibility. Calibration is not just the last step. It depends on everything that happened before it, from how the vehicle was measured to how it was repaired. That level of precision is now expected, not optional.

I also heard a lot about the realities shops are dealing with day to day. Tools are harder to access. Some are expensive, some are backordered, and sometimes they just don’t exist yet. In those cases, shops are getting creative, finding workarounds, leaning on relationships, or turning to the aftermarket to fill the gap.

On the technician side, the challenge is just as real. Recruiting is tough, but keeping good people comes down to training and investment. The shops that are putting time and resources into their technicians are seeing the difference.

There is also a noticeable shift in how shops are operating. Larger groups are using their size to share tools and resources across locations. Smaller shops are feeling that pressure and trying to figure out how to keep up without overextending themselves.

At the same time, there is no shortage of problem-solving happening. Whether it is tool innovation, new repair approaches, or simply technicians figuring things out in the bay, the industry continues to adapt.

Walking away from ToolTech, the biggest takeaway for me was not about

any single trend. It was about the pace. Everything is moving faster, and the expectations are higher across the board.

Integrating ADAS inspection and maintenance into vehicle service routines

As ADAS technology becomes standard, shops face the challenge of staying ahead with training to ensure their customers’ and pedestrians’ safety.

Professionals in the automotive service industry now carry heightened responsibilities due to the advanced technologies integrated into modern vehicles. Many of these systems perform critical safety roles, safeguarding vehicle occupants as well as vulnerable road users (VRUs). Accurate service and calibration are vital to ensuring these features operate as designed.

Although advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have become widely known, I don’t believe most of the service and repair industry realizes the importance of maintaining these systems. Some of the void here is that in the early days of ADAS feature

introduction, the consumer had been underwhelmed by the value these systems offer. This was largely due to a lack of tangible and observable benefits, and the lack of understanding of what these systems were doing and or what they were capable of. When a consumer purchases a new vehicle, they are rarely educated properly about these systems. However, as technology has evolved, the operational benefits have become more apparent, and drivers have become highly reliant on their proper operation.

Today, there are vehicles on the road that can perform all the dynamic driving tasks (DDTs) required to execute a drive from one point to another without the operator touching the steering wheel, brake, or accelerator pedal, though the vehicle still requires supervision. Almost every day, I enjoy this experience and feel blessed to have been able to see these capabilities progress over the past five or so years. If you have yet to experience the power of these modern robots on wheels, I highly recommend pursuing the experience to see what’s on the horizon and what

impact these capabilities will have on service (Figure 1).

ADAS — including pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB), lanekeeping assist (LKA), adaptive cruise control (ACC), blind-spot monitoring (BSM), and rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA) — depend on a sophisticated array of sensors, cameras, radars, and software to detect hazards, estimate volumetric space, process data in real time, and respond appropriately to mitigate risks. Having driven highly equipped ADAS vehicles for more than five years, I have observed these systems actively preventing incidents that would typically be recorded in crash data. For service professionals, this translates to an essential duty: maintaining the systems’ accuracy and reliability through inspection, including sensor calibration, alignment checks, and post-repair validations, to preserve their life-saving potential.

ADAS are increasingly standard in North American vehicles. Backup cameras became mandatory on new light vehicles sold after May 1, 2018, with ser-

vice needs ranging from lens cleaning to camera/harness repair or replacement. During wheel alignments, adhering to OEM procedures is critical. Omitting steering angle sensor calibration can lead to incorrect display or tracking of the backup camera’s dynamic trajectory guidelines — reducing reversing accuracy — and impaired electric power steering operation, such as altered assist levels or system faults.

ADOPTING INNOVATIVE SERVICE MODELS FOR LONG-TERM ADAS CARE

A whitepaper published by Ascential Technologies in 2025 — The Importance of ADAS Calibration for Collision Prevention and Road Safety — has drawn new attention to vehicle safety systems and maintenance. In my opinion, service professionals have an opportunity to adapt and provide service options aimed at keeping their clients’ vehicle systems supporting object and event detection and response (OEDR) operations as capable as possible.

p Figure 1 — Highly capable ADAS vehicle

According to SAE J3016, OEDR refers to the subtasks of the dynamic driving task (DDT), which include:

• Monitoring the driving environment.

• Detecting, recognizing, and classifying objects and events (e.g., other vehicles, pedestrians, road signs, construction zones, erratic drivers, or sudden hazards).

• Preparing to respond as needed.

• Executing an appropriate response to such objects and events (i.e., as needed to complete the DDT and/ or DDT fallback).

In late spring of last year, I was fortunate enough to have been invited to participate in the ADAS Symposium at SEMA Detroit, which was co-sponsored by MEMA Aftermarket. There were several work groups assembled, along with interesting presentations. What drew my attention the most was a pre -

sentation that focused on the technical findings on a 2024 Nissan Altima with approximately 12,000 miles on the odometer. They had the Transportation Research Center (TRC) out of East Liberty, Ohio, perform standardized

ADAS performance testing on this vehicle. They performed several tests, including PAEB, which resulted in a poor performance grade.

p Figure 2 — Toyota camera calibration explanation

CREATING AN ADAS OR TECHNOLOGY CARE PLAN

As ADAS systems age with the vehicle, shops have a prime opportunity to innovate beyond one-off repairs typically triggered via collision repair, windshield replacement, etc. While I personally haven’t implemented what follows, I am seriously considering offering a service package that will help support proper ADAS service and maintenance.

While manufacturers’ calibration requirements don’t necessarily call out periodic maintenance or calibration, if you remove a camera to clean the inside of the windshield, I’m certain that the OEM would call for recalibration. Inside Toyota’s diagnostic application, there is a statement that basically says that performing a calibration will raise the accuracy of the sensor by reducing its margin of error (Figure 2).

Traditional models often leave customers facing high out-of-pocket costs for calibration services, but a subscription-based or maintenance program could redefine service delivery. Imagine a model where customers enroll in an ADAS or a Technology Care Plan, paying a monthly/annual premium that covers routine cleanings, adjustments, and calibrations over the vehicle’s life — excluding component replacements to keep it focused on preventive care. One could consider offering a diagnostics and software updates “plus” level as well.

For example, consider a two-yearold vehicle arriving for service: The interior windshield area ahead of the forward-facing camera will ultimately require cleaning. Under a traditional model, this service typically involves the removal of the camera, cleaning, and recalibrating, which also includes a proper wheel alignment, plus testing and validating system performance, which could potentially cost hundreds out-of-pocket. We’ve performed several operations like this over the past few

years, and this is one of the reasons I am exploring such options. In a programenrolled scenario, the fee is reduced or covered entirely, as the plan amortizes costs across the vehicle’s lifecycle.

When drafting up a contract, you’ll

lision repair (especially if you’re not a collision shop), perhaps requiring a post-repair inspection to verify that the vehicle was properly repaired to maintain contract compliance. An inspection here ultimately offers additional peace of mind to the consumer as well. I have

personally seen far too many vehicles with less-than-stellar repairs performed via a collision repair, leaving their driver assistance system in jeopardy (Figures 3 & 4).

As you begin to explore models, also consider an EV model covering basic maintenance (tire rotations, alignment, cabin filters, inspections, etc.) that is often overlooked. By considering these models, shops can ultimately position themselves as forward-thinking partners, appealing to fleet operators and individual owners alike.

STAYING AHEAD: THE IMPERATIVE OF TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION

No discussion of ADAS is complete without emphasizing professional development. As systems grow more complex, service personnel (both front counter and back shop) must commit to ongoing education to handle diagnostics, calibrations, and repairs safely.

Certifications like the ASE L4 ADAS Specialist, which covers radar, camera, and ultrasonic systems, provide a benchmark for expertise. I-CAR’s Platinum Path for ADAS Technicians includes ProLevel 3 training and hands-

on static calibration courses, ensuring top-level skills.

Additionally, programs from Autel Academy offer in-depth, two-day courses on sensor principles and calibration fundamentals. There are many other programs out there able to provide equivalent. Emerging certifications, such as those from the Auto Glass Safety Council for ADAS-related glass work,

further specialize knowledge. Shops should invest in these, as trained teams not only reduce errors but also build trust, which is critical within the transportation segment.

In conclusion, ADAS maintenance is imperative and isn’t just about keeping pace; it’s about leading the charge toward safer roads. By integrating these practices, adopting innovative models, and prioritizing training, service professionals can turn challenges into opportunities, ensuring every vehicle leaves the bay as capable as the day it rolled off the assembly line.

Understanding your hand and specialty tool needs

Every technician’s tool needs are different –having the right tools means getting the job done quickly and efficiently.

While hand tools are nothing new to technicians at any level, they are still essential to everyday jobs in the shop. On the other hand, specialty tools may be new to some technicians, but having the right tool for the job is crucial, especially when working on newer vehicles .

THE EVERYDAY TOOL –HAND TOOLS

Hand tools cover a wide range of repair solutions, including ratchets, sockets, wrenches, and screwdrivers. As the name suggests, any tool that is operated by hand is considered a hand tool.

I’ll be focusing on a few hand tools that technicians regularly use throughout their workday, and the different features available for those tools that may be needed to get a job done.

THE RATCHET

One of the most frequently used hand tools is a ratchet. My personal ratchet of choice is the Ko-ken USA Z Series, which is offered in 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drive sizes. Choosing a ratchet may seem like an easy task, but there are quite a few differences among them. One difference is back drag, which refers to how much force is needed to engage the next tooth of the ratchet. Another is swing arc, which is the number of degrees of movement required to engage the next tooth. Ratchets with exceptionally low back drag and minimal swing arc make an excellent choice for tight-access areas, which are becoming increasingly common on newer vehicles.

Another ratchet feature to consider is whether you prefer a fixed head, flex head, or locking flex head. For example, Ko-ken’s Z Series is available in flex-head or fixed-head versions, as well as with either a push-button style anvil or a detent-ball style. Ultimately,

it comes down to personal preference. However, having a durable and highquality ratchet with a lifetime warranty is a must-have for today’s automotive industry.

THE SOCKET

Another high-use hand tool is the socket. Just like ratchets, sockets come in many different variations. Having the right socket for a job can make or break the repair. They come in four main lengths: shallow, semi-deep, deep, and extra deep. The length of the socket can play a significant role in the job you are performing. In my career, I have found the semi-deep length to be the best of both worlds. It allows you to access nuts that sit lower on studs while remaining slim enough to avoid contact with surrounding components. The same applies to the extra-deep variant, which allows you to reach fasteners positioned far down a stud, such as a turbo band clamp. When tightened, the clamp exposes many threads, and an extra-deep socket provides enough internal clearance for the longer stud. Another important feature is the broaching inside the socket. Broaching refers to how far down the chamfer extends inside the socket. This can be

very beneficial in everyday work. For example, if you have a bolt without a shoulder or washer and you use a socket with deep broaching, the fastener can fall too far inside the socket. As a result, there may not be enough thread protruding to start the fastener properly. In my opinion, shallow broaching is ideal. This feature is found on a variety of different brands, such as Snap-on, Ko-ken, Cornwell Quality Tools, and Mac Tools.

SPECIFIC FIXES CALL FOR SPECIALTY TOOLS

While hand tools cover a wide range of items in your toolbox, specialty tools may not have as large a presence. Before we look at some examples, let’s discuss what makes a specialty tool special. A specialty tool is something designed for a specific use or job and is often provided by the dealership or shop where you work. As you progress in your career, you will most likely acquire your own specialty tools. For me, I needed specialty tools for a flat-rate job and often found that someone else was using them or had misplaced them. For a flat-rate technician, time spent looking for the right tool costs money, which is why I prefer having my own tools, so I have them when I need them.

TOOL BRIEFING

THE OIL FILTER WRENCH

The first tool I will mention is the Blue Point OFTOY468 Oil Filter Wrench. Toyota uses a canister-style oil filter that requires a special wrench to remove the canister without damaging it. This applies to four-cylinder, six-cylinder, and eight-cylinder engines, and this tool works on all three sizes. It is also an approved special service tool in Toyota’s catalog. This is a tool you will likely use throughout your career, from lube technician to master technician, since oil changes are part of many repairs and maintenance services. This particular wrench is known for withstanding significant force without slipping, even in cases of overtightened or “frozen” filter cups. I have personally used this tool throughout my career as a Toyota/ Lexus technician and have never had an issue with it. It also features a lifetime warranty. Additionally, Blue Point offers additional filter cups in the same style for other manufacturers if you work on multiple makes and models.

THE SEAL INSTALLER

Another specialty tool I recommend is a seal installer. This can be a broad term because engines, differentials, and transmissions use many different seal sizes. That is why I suggest this as a shop purchase, since it can become expensive to buy every size individually. If you work at a dealership, there is a good chance a master set is provided. The purpose of a seal installer is to drive a replacement seal in straight and to the correct depth.

One example is the Toyota front differential seal installer from East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS). A common issue on Tacomas and 4Runners is front needle-bearing failure, which can cause vibration while driving that disappears in four-wheel drive. The repair involves replacing the needle bearing with a solid bushing, and ECGS offers a kit that includes the bushing, removal

tool, installer, and seal driver. Beyond that repair, axle seal replacement is also common. Whenever a CV axle is removed, replacing the seal is recommended. If you do not have access to a dealership master set, the ECGS installer is an affordable option. Although it is marketed for Toyota axles, it fits a range of other axle seals as well. If you need a complete set of sizes, the ICON set from Harbor Freight is another good option. It includes twelve size adapters for seals and bearing races, a comfortgrip striking handle, and an air-hammer attachment for driving races in and out.

THE HARMONIC BALANCER

The last specialty tool I would like to highlight is the Schley Products 64300 harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley holding tool. This tool is designed for Toyota/Lexus V6 and V8 engines, though similar tools are available for other makes and models. Its purpose is to hold the crankshaft pulley while removing or torquing the bolt to factory specifications. The tool features two cutouts for bolts that thread into the pulley and a 1/2” square drive on the end for attaching a breaker bar. This

allows you to counterhold the pulley and prevent crankshaft rotation. If a crank bolt has not been removed in many years, it can be very difficult to break free due to high torque specifications. Proper installation and torquing are equally important, as this bolt is critical to engine operation. Incorrect or excessive torque can lead to future issues.

While each technician will have different needs for specific hand and specialty tools, at the end of the day, each tool plays a significant role in our everyday lives as technicians. Having the right tool for the job helps repairs go smoothly and efficiently. They allow us to complete jobs correctly, prevent comebacks, and ensure quality repairs.

Carbyne Tools 114-pc Master Metric & SAE Socket Set

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: Great set, the advantage of having varying length bits is a real asset. The sheer quantity of bits saves time by not having to chase down different bit types; they are all in one set!

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Carbyne Tools 114-pc Master Metric & SAE Hex, Torx, and XZN Triple Square Bit Socket Set, No. 3101608, provides technicians with a comprehensive assortment of hex, Torx, and XZN triple square bits across 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drive sizes. The set features drop-forged, heat-treated S2 alloy steel bits paired with chrome vanadium steel sockets for strength and long service life. The bits feature a zinc phosphate finish for corrosion resistance, while the sockets are chrome-plated for durability. Precision-chamfered bit ends aid fastener engagement, and the sizes are clearly marked on both the sockets and the heavy duty molded storage case. The set meets ANSI standards and is backed by Carbyne’s lifetime warranty. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55372688

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: Professionally boxed, and a hard plastic molded case is included. The bits all snap into a slot designed specifically for that bit. This helps with keeping track of all the bits, which would be overwhelming without the well-laid-out case.

Q: What features did you like?

A: There is a lot to like about this toolkit. The sheer number of bits is crazy good. The kit is very encompassing as far as bit type goes, a good mix of Allen, Torx, inverted Torx, and triple square. The case is a really well-thought-out case. I would have predicted a kit this large to have a significantly larger case; this case is so well planned that it has little to no wasted space. All the bits I used fit the fastener they were used on correctly. I’m optimistic that these will last.

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: Using a bit design that allows bits to be removed from the socket to accommodate low clearance areas would be beneficial. Also, make these impact-rated, or offer an impact-rated variant.

A: A coil replacement on a 2005 Saturn Vue. I also used a bunch of these bits during a Tesla large drive unit rebuild.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have used similar socket-driven bits from various manufacturers over the years. The Carbyne bits seem to be of a similar quality to other brandname bits, but at a significant discount. This socket bit set is the largest kit I have ever owned. It is really great to have so many options in one case.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: A 9.3 — This is a great socketbased bit set. The tools seem accurately made with a mind towards being a viable option for tool truckgrade socket bits.

Hydraulic Vehicle Positioning Jack

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: The jacks save a lot of time since they are self-loading and require less effort and no extra equipment.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: One person can prepare a car to be moved in minutes, keeping production moving on other things.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The OTC Tools Vehicle Positioning Jack, No. PJM15, is a single-car dolly that can lift and support up to 1,500 lbs to help safely move disabled vehicles. The ratcheting foot pedal quickly lifts a vehicle corner by the wheel, keeping the car in place and the user’s hands free. An automatic ratcheting lock functions similarly to a vehicle lift, locking in place as the vehicle is lifted, to prevent accidental lowering. Two locking casters keep the vehicle secure after positioning. The heavy duty casters roll smoothly along the shop floor and prevent scratching or scuffing of finished concrete. Integrated side handles make it easy to carry the dolly to and from the vehicle.

For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55372733

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: The jacks came fully assembled and ready to go.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The jacks are really easy to use. Open the release valve and slide the frame apart so the rollers are in front and behind the tire, tighten the valve, release and pump the pedal until the tire is just off the ground, drop the safety pin in place, and re-secure the pump pedal. To lower, just reverse the process.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was it easy to understand?

A: Yes, there was a manual included. It was easy to read and understand. It included safety warnings and operating instructions with illustrations. There was also troubleshooting information and maintenance.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The jacks have a grab handle so that you can carry them without having to worry about pinching your hands. The hydraulic pump and selflifting design made use almost effort-

less. The car can be completely moved by one person, but I suggest grabbing someone after setup to help guide the car to prevent hitting anything.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: These are so much nicer. The one I used prior to these required using a floor jack to lift the car so that the dolly could be placed under the tires, taking much more time and effort.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: Based on the comparison between these and the ones I’ve used, I’d have to give them a 10. The self-lifting ability is priceless, and the wheels roll so much nicer than the smaller ones on the old type.

Power Tools

1/2” High Torque Impact Wrench

by

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: The tool serves as a powered alternative to hand tools. Impact guns are an invaluable tool that is used extensively day in and day out by automotive technicians.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: A 1/2” impact wrench is a tool that even an entry-level technician will have in their toolbox and directly impacts a technician’s efficiency. As stated above, they are invaluable.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The 1/2” High-Torque Impact Wrench, No. FX1472-1H, from FLEX Power Tools, delivers up to 1,500 ftlbs of maximum torque. Dampeners deliver vibration suppression that isolates the user and the tool from vibration for reduced fatigue and maximum control. The cordless impact wrench features two auto control modes: Bolt Auto Stop mode prevents over-tightening, breaking, or stripping, while Bolt Removal mode stops the tool when the bolt is loosened. A multi-light LED delivers bright illumination in dark areas. The kit includes the 1/2” impact wrench, 6.0Ah Stacked Lithium battery, and a 280W Rapid Charger. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55373155

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: Just fully charging the Li-ion battery before getting to work.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: It operated like most battery-powered impact guns.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It was shipped in the blow molded case with the tool itself, a 6Ah Li-ion battery, and a charger.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: Yes, a start-up guide was included. I referenced the manual for battery care best practices, but outside of that, the tool is intuitive in its use.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The auto control modes are useful; it also has a better light than most of its competition in the market.

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: This tool is heavier than other 1/2” impacts that I’ve used, battery or pneumatic.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? Please provide a few specific examples.

A: My time with this tool consisted

mainly of wheel lugnut removal and suspension repairs.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: This is my first exposure to anything from FLEX Power Tools, though I am no stranger to impact guns. For batterypowered impact guns, in 1/2”, I personally own two other brands. And while this does have some features that others do not, like vibration suppression, better lighting, and multi-mode functions, this unit is heavier than others.

Q: What are your overall thoughts on this tool?

A: It’s quality-built and has plenty of power. It comes in a well-organized case; its layout and functions are well thought out by FLEX and intuitive to the user. You get a lot of features for the price point, and FLEX has many options in the 24V space to fit many needs while keeping consistency in the brand and battery tech.

A: I simply removed the foil wrapper on top of the container, routed the wipe through opening, and then tore off wipes as needed.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The product is easy to use and self-explanatory.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Big Wipes Heavy Duty Textured Scrub & Clean Wipes are designed to remove grease, grime, adhesives, sealants, paint, anti-seize, and dirt from hands, tools, and surfaces without the use of harsh solvents. These wipes require no water and are durable, absorbent, and safe on skin, according to the company. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55373332

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: The product came in a plastic cylindrical container similar to a household cleaning wipe. The other sample came as individually packaged wipes. No accessories.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: No manual is included, but there are basic instructions on the container explaining the difference between the textured and smooth sides of the wipe and their applications.

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: An unscented version would be nice in place of the “Sports Active Fragrance,” but that is just a personal preference.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: These wipes came in handy for jobs involving dirt and/or crud. I used them on my hands as well as on soiled work areas. On a few vehicles, I used these wipes to clean off plastic engine covers.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have not used cleaning wipes previously in a shop environment. I’ve previously used shop rags, which are essentially heavy duty paper towels or faucet water and hand cleaner/soap.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would rate this product a 10 overall. In a pinch, these wipes can save you a trip to a wash sink. They are indispensable in a shop environment, and besides cleaning hands/arms, they are effective in wiping work areas and tools as well.

Snap-on APOLLO+

Q & A with Daniel Vidal, Snap-on's growth development manager for North America.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: For starters, this product’s packed with a lot of great features and software like the SureTrack top repairs graph. This particular feature provides a technician with a graph by mileage of the parts and procedures used to fix that specific code or symptoms. It lets the technician see what has worked for others in that specific situation; it really gives them that guidance. It also includes SureTrack Real Fixes, which shows you what works for other techs based on expert knowledge from professionals who have seen and solved the same vehicle issues that they might be working on. These are both great time-saving features that can help the tech start in the right direction. The other thing is technical service bulletins and having the ability to see those right on the tool. This is OEM information that is confirmed, verified repair information that is filtered specifically to the vehicle and code they’re working on, so they don’t have to waste time searching for those bulletins.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: The APOLLO+ is an evolution of the APOLLO families, and this continues the legacy that we’ve built on for many years. Snap-on has been in the diagnostics business for well over 30 years, and we want to continue that tradition by building really solid products that are designed for the shop environment with the features and the software that technicians need to get through the jobs at hand. This is one more platform that we know is robust, that will stand the test of time for technicians and shops.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: APOLLO+ is a great product for up-and-coming technicians who are looking to start their diagnostic career and maybe aspire to be that lead technician or maybe a shop owner. The APOLLO+ is going to help them focus on the job and improve productivity by providing the information that they need right away, right there on the device, making them much better at diagnosing and fixing cars properly, and increasing their acumen so that they can become great professionals in the field.

Q: What has the feedback been like from technicians who have purchased this product?

A: Feedback has been great. It’s been very positive. A lot of them enjoy the time-saving features. They have all the coverage they need to work on and fix vehicles. We want them to fix every single car, so we give them the most coverage available so they don’t have to turn any jobs down.

Q: Is there anything else our readers should know?

A: APOLLO+ includes the Fast-Track Intelligent Diagnostics workflow that helps technicians follow a comprehensive diagnostic process. They don’t miss any steps, making sure that they can properly diagnose and not waste time on different things that are probably not relevant. This includes Smart Data, which delivers code-based data lists and highlights PIDs that are out of range, so the techs don’t have to remember all this information or step away from the vehicle to go look for that information. It’s all right there in the tool. We want them to be productive right there in front of the car, get everything they need, and go on to the next job.

TECH TIP: THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESCANS AND POST-SCANS

For both the customer and the repair shop, performing pre-scans and postscans on a vehicle is a smart play. It’s not only good for the customer to understand the baseline health of the vehicle but also good for the shop to check all the boxes. It’s beneficial to all parties involved, making it worth the time invested.

For example, if the customer comes in with two or three different issues with warning lights on the dash, the technician can actually embed a picture of that into the pre-scan report with the scan tool, which then helps further the documentation and helps connect the dots for the customer. Anything that helps with customer communication is a plus.

Of course, when doing scans, stable voltage is important. Make sure the battery is being maintained while retrieving all codes. If the battery is in poor health or the voltage falls too low, there is always the chance that some of the network will get shut off by design. That can lead to not retrieving all codes that are potentially stored in a vehicle.

TECH TIP: UNDERSTANDING ADAS

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are electronic systems designed to improve vehicle safety and driving comfort by assisting drivers in controlling the vehicle. ADAS in modern vehicles rely on a network of sensors and cameras to perceive the environment and provide safety features like emergency braking or lanekeeping assistance.

To ensure these systems function correctly, they require precise calibration – particularly after windshield replacement or collision repairs. Technicians can benefit from investing in comprehensive ADAS calibration solutions which utilize advanced technology like vision sensors to measure distances and angles of targets relative to the vehicle, ensuring accurate calibration of various sensors. Diagnostic scan tools like the Bosch ADS 625X are also helpful to have in your arsenal for easy calibrations. This tool will connect with your calibration unit to communicate with the vehicle’s ADAS and guide you through the calibration procedure, which involves adjusting the sensors until they are precisely aligned.

The conversation starter

Technician Jason Nau’s Joker-themed toolbox is certainly a showstopper, but Nau believes it’s not the box that sells, it’s the tools inside.

Technician Jason Nau, owner of J & J Fleet Services in New Castle, Delaware, has been in the automotive industry since he was 17 and has been the owner of his shop for 10 years. From starting out on the floor as a technician to moving into leadership roles on the corporate side of things, Nau has worked tirelessly to get to where he's at.

Now at 41, he’s earned himself a toolbox setup that blends his expertise and personality into one cohesive station he can lean on when performing repairs. When you step foot into Nau’s shop, you might first notice the size of his Cornwell Platinum Series toolbox, a staggering 20’ long. Or maybe your eyes will be drawn to the artwork on the box. A Joker-themed wrap, with a bright green body and purple accents on every drawer, plus his company logo on both ends. It’s hard to look away.

“The design is definitely a huge talking point,” Nau says. “It’s led me into

conversations with people, and you can connect with [them], and then all of a sudden, they’re like, ‘Hey, by the way, I take care of this company over here, and I need help.’ It’s huge for networking.”

LAY OF THE LAND

Nau has had his current setup for around three years, and more than just the wrap makes the box unique. The box was part of a limited run Cornwell offered. There’s a box on the left and right, and then in the center, a power drawer. The top drawer, handles, and everything align all the way across.

“The power drawer is completely modular,” Nau explains. “I can have it set up any way I want [for] battery tools and power tools. It’s got hook designs so you can hang tools, and you lock on other attachments like your battery bank.”

When organizing, Nau keeps metric and standard sizes separated. Wrenches are kept in magnetic trays to stay neat and readily available. Not only does this help Nau keep things running efficiently, but it also allows his shop to continue operation if he were to be out one day and someone needed to borrow something or take over in the middle of one of his repairs. If you keep your tools organized, your fellow technicians should be able to get a quick lay of the land and take over when needed.

“Organization is key, 100 percent,” Nau says. “As a business owner, when I see a [technician] that does not have [their] stuff organized, I automatically know that person is going to be a problem. If they can’t keep their stuff clean and organized, that’s the same thing that they’re doing on a vehicle. They’re not going to have things organized in case you’ve got a situation where you have to have another [technician] pick up where they left off.”

TOOLS MAKE YOU MONEY

For young technicians getting their setup started, Nau says to focus on gathering tools. “As you grow within your tools, that’s when you start upgrading into the toolboxes,” Nau says. “The thing that I see with guys that come in and out of my shop is that they have these huge $10,000 toolboxes, and then you go to look, and they have one drawer that’s filled while all the rest are empty.”

Nau has practiced what he preaches, working his way up to the current box he now has after researching and shopping around beforehand. While it can be fun to have big, flashy boxes, it’s not always practical when you first start out.

“The toolbox doesn’t make you the money,” Nau explains. “The tools make you the money.”

Nau's Joker-themed box is truly one of kind, and it's been a great tool for networking.
