The Snap-on 3/8” Drive 36mm Low Profile Filter Socket, No. S3625, assists technicians in removing and installing fuel filters on Ford 6.0L and 6.4L diesel trucks. The fuel filter housing’s location at the bottom of the engine is within the frame rail, where access is constrained by nearby fuel lines and wiring harnesses. The confined space makes it difficult to use a standard-length socket, as it positions the ratchet farther from the housing and interferes with surrounding components. The socket’s low-profile design allows for easy access around these obstructions. The socket features a durable chrome finish.

Everything IN ITS PLACE
There is so much that goes into tool storage beyond toolboxes and carts, but selling these products doesn’t have to be complicated.
By Elli Carder, Assistant Editor
Atechnician without a good set of storage tools is fated to be disorganized. Without the proper means to keep their things safe and stowed away, they lose out not only on the time they spend looking for the right tools, but also the additional money they could be making by taking on more repairs. If they’ve got tools, they’ll need a place to store them. That’s where distributors like Rich Rossi come in.
Rossi, a Cornwell Quality Tools distributor, has been in the business of mobile tool dealing for a little over three years, but before that, he was an automotive technician for 41 years. Located in Northeast Pennsylvania, Rossi stops at dealerships, independent shops, body shops, heavy duty shops and more. What all these shops have in common is their need for tool storage and organization. Whether it's a toolbox or cart, drawer inserts, or magnetic trays, Rossi has his clients covered.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STORAGE
The benefits of tool storage are so vast that we could sit here for hours discussing the need for organization in a repair shop, but I’ll spare you the page

turning. Along with Rossi, we sat down with SUNEX Tools, Mechanic’s Time Savers, and EZRED, and narrowed down four key benefits to having tool storage and organization in the automotive shop. Lean on these when it comes to your selling approach.
Efficiency
When a technician keeps their tools and equipment organized they cut back on the time it would otherwise take searching for a wrench or whatever it is they might need. They’re moving faster and getting more work done at an efficient pace which in turn opens up opportunities to make more money.
“Knowing exactly where each tool is can save time, improving productivity,” says Josh Holley, product manager at SUNEX.
EZRED’s Jake Millman, business development manager, seconds that notion. “Techs get paid when jobs get finished. The ease of knowing where your tools are is big.”
Mechanic’s Time Savers offers clear identification markings on organizers, cutting down on the time it takes a technician to find the right size.
“We’ve been releasing tool organization with easy to resize indicators on them,” Alexis Barfoot, project and marketing manager for Mechanic’s Time Savers, says. “We sell both metric and SAE clips and they pop off so you can customize it. If a [technician] might want to have a magnetic rail with their most used sockets, they can quickly customize that and have it right there. So not only does it offer the customization, but it’s easy to see.”
Security
Tool organization can give technicians a level of security that they might not otherwise have. You wouldn’t keep your tool truck unlocked, thousands of dollars of product unattended and primed for the taking, and neither should a technician have their tools out
in the open to get lost—or worse, stolen.
“It’s easy to quickly tell what’s missing. Most shops have multiple mechanics,” says Barfoot. “And if someone borrows your tool or walks off with it and puts it somewhere else, you can quickly tell if it’s missing. And then also lock it up. Some people deal with theft, so it just keeps your stuff together.”
Professionalism
It’s no secret that a well-organized workspace lends to a more professional look. In an automotive shop, where customers can expect to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars, that level of professionalism can help them feel assured that their cars are being taken care of by someone who knows what they’re doing.
“A well-maintained tool area reflects a professional work ethic,” Holley of SUNEX explains. “Which is especially important in commercial or shared workshop settings.”
SUNEX offers a folding magnetic tray that keeps fasteners, parts, tools,
and more all neatly together as a technician works through a repair. Instead of having these tools strewn about, they can keep them contained and tidy.
Tool longevity
If you’ve ever stepped inside a repair shop, you know that it’s probably not the first place you’d pick to leave something fragile just lying around. From oils, chemicals, and more it’s no guarantee that a tool left unattended on any given surface won’t sustain some level of damage. By keeping these tools put away when not in use, technicians can save themselves the headache of needing to buy a replacement earlier than needed.
“Properly stored tools are less likely to get lost or damaged, reducing the need to replace or repair tools,” Holley says.
EZRED offers both a ratchet holder and plier holder, both lightweight and customizable, for technicians to store these tools in a customizable way that keeps them out of the way of the harsh shop environment.

COVER STORY
MORE THAN JUST A TOOLBOX
While toolboxes, carts, and workstations tend to be the thing that comes to mind when thinking about tool storage, there’s so much more that goes into organization than just those heavy hitters.
As EZRED Vice President Frank Cacciabeve puts it, “Toolboxes and carts are just the foundation. They are the house for your tools and, like a house, it’s just a space unless you put in the organization.”
If you’re looking to up your storage offerings, try getting your hands on magnetic solutions that keep small, loose ends together and not rolling across the shop floor; modular rails and racks to keep a technician’s mostused tools within reach; and/or drawer organizers that keep things from moving around and getting banged up.
Selling the small stuff
Unlike power tools or scan tools that can be easily demonstrated, tool storage might seem like a sitting duck on your truck just waiting for the right technician who needs an extra cart or wrench
organizer to come by and scoop them up. You may not realize the potential in the way that that organizational duck is placed on the truck, so maybe it’s time for a bit of rearranging.
“Where we’ve seen dealers have success is actually using [the products],” EZRED’s Millman explains. “They sell wrenches and sockets, so they load it up and throw it on their truck somewhere magnetic and hit their route. When someone walks on the truck, they easily see it loaded and see the strength of the magnets.”
This approach to displaying organizational tools can also save you space, Mechanic’s Time Saver’s Barfoot notes.
“By showing the customer the tool already in the organizer, they can sell both at the same time,” she explains. “It increases sales numbers and it teaches the customer how to set up their boxes showcasing functionality and so [distributors] can have a full setup in their truck.”
You can create a showroom of sorts on the truck, with smaller organizational products being displayed in the same way they would be used in a shop, but these tools don’t have to just sit there. Rossi sometimes takes these smaller products out to his clients.
“I’ll actually take them into a shop and do a demonstration to the

COVER STORY
technicians there, that’s an easy sell right there,” Rossi says. “They see like a bowl that’s going to hold all their nuts and bolts. If they’re doing an intake job, it’s like, ‘I need that.’”
Rossi has found that once a technician sees him demonstrate the product they’ll want to try it for themselves — test out the magnets, push the weight capacity to its limits — and then the sale is essentially made.
Toolboxes and carts
When it comes to bigger stuff that can’t be easily carted into a shop the approach doesn’t need to be complicated.
“I bring the customer out to the truck and they’re able to see the toolboxes or the cart, open the drawers, see how the drawer slides, and take it from there,” Rossi says. “When you bring a customer onto your truck to look at that stuff, it’s more of an easier sale than conversation-wise.”
Rossi keeps both a toolbox and a cart on his truck at all times, selling one around every two weeks.
“I go back and forth from a 79” box to an 84” box, same way with the cart,”
he explains. “So I’ll stock either a five drawer or a six drawer. I sell one every two weeks, just gotta find the right customer.”
Sometimes, when selling these bigger boxes or carts, technicians need a little nudging. When it comes to finding that right customer, it’s important to ask a few starting questions. The first, what is the technician’s current setup?
“I’ll go into a shop and see what they have,” Rossi says. “And then we’ll talk a little bit about boxes. Once you
start talking about the toolbox, you plant that seed, and now they’re com ing to you about, ‘Hey, what about this? Does your box do this?’ And that’s how the conversation would come up.”
Each technician has unique cir cumstances and wants for their tool storage making it important to get to know your clients so that you can anticipate their needs. A client just starting out might not have the money, or the space, to buy big toolboxes so pitching them something smaller to start might be a better approach.
“A lot of the young customers are price-driven so we just talk about the features and benefits of the box and how much weight it could hold compared to the competitors,” Rossi explains.
Mechanic’s Time Savers offers different levels of all of their prod ucts for technicians who may not be able to spend a lot of money on tool storage right out the gate.
“Whether you have a technician just entering the business or a sea soned vet, we like to offer different levels of our products to meet their needs,” Barfoot says. “We have some base models and some higher level models with more features like size indicators and magnets, but they all offer the same functionality.”

Finally, you should be asking your customers where they’re facing challenges or inefficiencies in their shop. Are they losing small things like bolts or are they finding that they’re current toolboxes just aren’t cutting it when it comes to housing their many tools?
“Focus on practical features
that address everyday pain points,” SUNEX’s Holley advises. “Highlight how specific storage solutions can simplify tasks, improve access, and support a cleaner, more productive workspace.”
TRENDS IN STORAGE
It’s becoming more and more clear
that tool storage is no longer just about functionality. Technicians are becoming increasingly interested in customization — whether in color or design — and products that offer more than just a place to store their tools.
Customizing

Future-Proof Your Diagnostics with TOPDON LEARN MORE
Being able to customize their organizational setup is a big bonus for automotive technicians, something Rossi is sure to go over with his customers.
“The color packages that [Cornwell] has are a big sell,” Rossi says. “We can even wrap up toolboxes, whether it be a magnetic wrap or a vinyl wrap. We can get pretty much any type of wrap that you want.”
Power offering
Another important factor to keep in mind when talking to your technicians about toolboxes specifically is the power offering. Rossi’s customers have been increasingly interested in power drawers in their toolboxes and carts.
“Dedicated power drawer carts have seen a rise in popularity to compliment all the power tools that techs are using,” Holley says. “This allows them to charge them all in one place and keep them secured as well.”
Mobility
Mobility also continues to be a point of interest for technicians with things like soft-sided tool bags, modular plastic organizers, and other portable options. Magnetic storage products have really seen their time in the spotlight, offering technicians both customization and mobility. A magnetic parts tray can be carried around the shop without fear of things spilling out and getting lost, then be set down on whatever surface they see fit.
As the technology surrounding tool storage evolves, Rossi keeps his nose to the ground, leaning on the knowledge and direction of his district team, but most importantly his customers. G E G E G E G E G E G E G E

Tool truck vs. tool trailer:
What is best for your mobile tool store?
Understanding how to find the right mobile store for your business.
By Bob Bischak
Your mobile tool business is going well , and your inventory keeps growing as tool manufacturers offer more new products to meet your customers’ needs. However, it might be time for a new mobile tool store.
Perhaps your store looks a little tired, and doesn’t lend itself to properly displaying today’s range of tools and equipment. A new mobile tool store can generate excitement and sales as it drives traffic to your store. There are many choices for mobile tool trucks today. Step van or cab and chassis configuration? Diesel, gas, or hybrid powertrain? GVWR/payload capacity? Size?
Many decisions are also needed for a trailer - bumper pull (tag) or gooseneck trailer? Length? GVWR/
payload? Tow vehicle? As with tool trucks, your route, inventory, interior layout, and budget will decide your trailer and tow vehicle needs.
The cost of step vans and cab and chassis tool trucks have risen, and truck downtime (often due to diesel emissions-related issues) is a problem. Some mobile tool distributors are opting to use custom trailers for their mobile stores. Potential benefits include lower initial investment, reduced downtime, lower maintenance costs, and the flexibility of separating the tool store from the vehicle.
How do you decide which is right for you? Let’s look at the pros and cons.
TRADITIONAL TOOL TRUCK Pros
• Variety of tool truck builders
• Inventory is potentially vulnerable when the tool truck is at the service facility
• Higher/steeper steps to the cab and into the body of the tool truck (becoming an issue for our aging customer base)
• Inherent danger of loading tool cabinets and equipment using liftgates, and the size limitations of liftgates
• Availability of service facilities for repair and maintenance
TOOL TRAILER AND TRUCK
Pros
• Potentially lower initial investment
• Separate power unit from tool store (can use alternate tow vehicle during maintenance/downtime of tow)
• Can use tow vehicle to tow another trailer (open or enclosed for focused promotions), or tow your camper or race car trailer on the weekends
• Can upgrade/replace tow vehicle without replacing the existing tool store
• Less steps into the tool store and the cab of the tow vehicle
• Ramp door for loading tool storage units and equipment
• Many service facility options for trucks and trailers

• The tow vehicle can be used to run the route if trailer is down
Cons
• Potentially harder to maneuver in tight areas
• Trade-in or resale potential may be limited
• Financing/insurance/licensing of multiple vehicles required
• Limited number of vendors building turn-key tool trailers
• You need to exit the tow vehicle and walk from the truck to the trailer to enter your store
• Likely requires a generator for climate control
SPEC’ING A MOBILE TOOL TRAILER
The process of researching and spec’ing out a tool truck is a familiar topic for most, so let’s discuss the lesser-known choice of the mobile tool trailer.
Size
First, what size trailer? You are going to want a trailer with an interior height of 7’; that’s about the max height to easily reach tools laced on the ceiling. An 8.5’ wide trailer gives you 96” between the walls to allow adequate aisle width. As far as box length, 20’ to 24’ bumper pull trailers or 28’ to 32’ Gooseneck trailers (20’24’ box with 8’ gooseneck) are common and closely match the interior space of conventional tool trucks with 20’ to 24’ boxes. Gooseneck trailers tend to be more maneuverable and provide better ride quality than bumper pull units.
Interior layout
The options and layouts for trailer
interiors closely mirror those of traditional tool trucks. Climate control options usually include propane furnaces with tanks mounted on the tongue of bumper pull trailers or in the bunk areas of gooseneck trailers, and gas or diesel generators sized to run one or two roof A/C units. Generators can be mounted on the tongue of bumper pull trailers (or, often, the generator is mounted in the truck bed) or in the bunk area of gooseneck trailers. A popular option is to include a fuel tank for the generator mounted below the floor of the trailer between the frame rails.
Construction
An important consideration is to start with a trailer properly constructed for the application. Enclosed trailers are not designed to support heavy loads on the ceiling and side walls, which is exactly what we do in our mobile tool stores. Twelve-inch on-center floor crossmembers, wall posts, and roof bows are highly recommended, as are trailers featuring single or double I-beam construction frame rails. Torsion axles with the proper capacity and hubs, wheels, tires, and brakes suited for the application are necessary.
INSIDE INSIGHTS ON USING A TRAILER
James Stinson owns a three-generation mobile tool business that has used tool trailers as mobile stores since 2003. Stinson cites lower initial cost, ease of maintenance and repairs, and flexibility as the key benefits of using trailers. He also notes, “being able to drop the trailer and take care of something elsewhere in the route” is a real convenience, and “being able to swap out the tow vehicle in case of downtime on the primary tow vehicle lets me keep my business up and running.”
Today, a 22’-24’ tool truck built on the popular Freightliner M2 chassis will likely require an investment of $225-$250K. The cost of the interior build-out (your retail store) is about the same for a tool truck or tool trailer, and the costs for generator, furnace, and A/C installations are similar as well.
The cost of the trailer represents about 20-30 percent of the total cost of the finished store. Stinson tells how he “purchased a new trailer in 2021 and spent a lot of money on the interior conversion” only to have ongoing structural, axle, and brake problems.
“I tried to save money by buying an inexpensive trailer that proved not to be suited for this application,” he says, “so the money spent on the upfitting of the trailer went to waste.”
In 2024, Stinson visited the Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales/United Trailer booth at ISN’s Tool Expo in Orlando.
“I was amazed at the quality of the trailer they had on display and their willingness to take the time to listen to my needs,” he says. “I ended up ordering two 28’ United Trailers Commercial Cargo Gooseneck Trailers and having them built out at Herr Display Vans. Herr Display Vans and United Trailers worked together to build me exactly what I wanted for my businesses.”
The custom trailer as a mobile tool store is a practical alternative, and it may be worth considering for your next store. Do your homework and find the right solution for your business!

SHOW ME YOUR TRUCK
An updated route for an upgraded truck
Moving into a new truck can be a slow and frustrating process, but it’s the perfect time to reevaluate your business and make sure you’re on the right track.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
Toolbox Inc.’s Matt Rowaan celebrates his twelfth year as an independent distributor in January 2026. He’s now on his third tool truck after upgrading this past January. He went from driving a 2001 Chevrolet P30 to a pre-owned 2012 18’ Workhorse W62 that his boss picked up and drove from San Diego all the way to the Niagara region in Ontario, Canada. Unsurprisingly, the new truck has been a dream for Rowaan so far.
MORE ROOM FOR BUSINESS
Aside from offering Rowaan a far more smooth and comfortable ride, the new truck is loaded with benefits.
“This one’s substantially nicer: bigger frame, bigger brakes, 22.5” wheels. It finally has an air seat — it took 11 years, but I’ve got one now,” Rowaan jokes. “I’m definitely enjoying more shelving space. I’ve got two toolbox openings. We don’t move a ton of toolboxes, but when we do have service carts or truck jacks, it’s handy to tuck them out of the way. It’s got awesome LED lighting. The previous owner put a lot of money into the lights — interior lights, shelf lights, all of it.”
The roomier interior is great for stocking and inventory, of course, but it provides just as much benefit for Rowaan and his customers. Breathing room in a tool truck is always appreciated.
“One big upgrade is the cubicle on the side,” Rowaan says. “Our old trucks had the layout with the cabinet and laptop in the middle, so you were always standing in the aisle. This one has the more modern LDV look, with a little cubicle behind the driver’s seat, tucked into the corner. It keeps you out of the way. If you’re at a shop with four guys on the truck, you’re not bumping into each other trying to find the newest tool.”
BUILDING A NEW BEGINNING
The new truck is not perfect by any means — Rowaan wishes the till was by the printer instead of the repair station — but the upgrade has certainly paid off. It also gave the team an opportunity to reevaluate and restructure the route, removing non-profitable stops and adjusting to better serve the rest.
“We talked about dropping a few stops before, but now
I’ve got to pay for the new truck, so it’s a good time for new beginnings,” Rowaan explains. “Some customers I’ve moved to once-a-month visits. Others just call when they need something or when the new catalog comes out every three months.”
It also allowed them to revaluate their inventory. On his last truck, Rowaan had custom shelving to hold chemical products, but there were better uses for that space.
“We don’t sell a wide variety of that line, so I just stock a couple cases of penetrating fluid, glass cleaner, and a few other sprays. If a shop needs more, they call me and I drop it off the next day.”
Aside from consolidating chemicals, Rowaan revamped his power tool display to align more with customers needs.
“We also downsized our air tool display,” Rowaan says. “We used to have a custom rack, but now we just use the smaller one that came with the truck. We don’t sell much air anymore with the shift to cordless. We’re heavy on Milwaukee, but everyone kind of is.”
The decline in pneumatic sales might intimidate some distributors, but as an independent, Rowaan isn’t worried about the competition. He gives the example of a customer who just bought a hydraulic flaring toolkit from him. The customer was initially upset at what they thought was a high price, only to find it on sale in a competitor’s catalog for around $150 more.
“It’s awesome when you can beat the big-name guy on price,” Rowaan says. “Being independent has its perks.”
THE NEXT GENERATION OF CUSTOMERS
Even if he originally didn’t expect to be in this line of work for over a decade, Rowaan has found incredible success as a distributor. In fact, he’s built up a bit of a legacy already.
“It’s great when second-generation customers come in and say, ‘My dad told me to buy everything from you.’ That’s a pretty cool experience,” Rowaan says. “Some of those folks even buy tools from me for their kids — graduation gifts, birthday presents — after they retire.”
Being a successful distributor requires a wild amount of time, energy, and effort, but for Rowaan and Toolbox Inc., the reason for success is simple: “We’re still independent dealers, and we treat people how we want to be treated.”
Top- The new truck has more power, more room, and a whole lot more comfort. Bottom Left- Rowaan has shifted to carrying more cordless tools than air tools. Middle Right- Rowaan's customer base in Niagara includes technicians working with heavy duty and agricultural equipment. Bottom Right- Rowaan and Toolbox Inc. embrace their identity as independents.

How to handle skips
The price of not managing skips could cost you more than you think.
By Brian Fahlgren, Contributing Editor
Ican’t think of any businesses that do not incur some form of financial loss or shrinkage in one way or another. Mini marts have shoplifters, automotive repair shops often donate labor and parts in the name of customer satisfaction, and many other businesses incur losses with employee theft. There are too many examples of business losses to list. Notably, the mobile tool business certainly has its share in the form of skips.
Because of its unique business model of allowing a customer to walk off a truck with a $100 tool after putting only $20 down, and then continuing to pay $20 a week, distributors always have a considerable amount of money “on the street.” Hence, the reason tool businesses are based not only on sales but more importantly, on completed sales. How to deal with skips has always been a matter of debate.
THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF MANAGING SKIPS
From my experience, skips equate to approximately 1 to 3 percent of gross completed sales. While that might not seem like much, it can add up to a double-digit loss for a successful dealer.
The don’ts
Over the years, I’ve heard a wide range of opinions on how to deal with skips. They run the gamut from, just go out and sell more and don’t dwell on it to
this advice from a long-time veteran. He told me, “When a customer skips, I send him a collection letter for twice what they owe. If they’re concerned, they’ll contact me immediately because of the increased amount. If they don’t contact me, I just take the increased amount off my taxes!”
Personal integrity is the most important attribute a dealer can have. I’d NEVER use the latter scenario nor would I ever endorse it, although it still makes me laugh. Instead, develop the habit of having all first-time customers sign a security agreement on their initial purchase.
The do’s
The answer to how to handle skips isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Contacting the skip immediately is the first step in every situation. A polite text or call reminds the customer of their obligation to you. If you get ignored, that’s the time to consider your options.
There’s a part of the technician world that is nomadic. These folks always bounce from one shop to another. Even though they “skipped,” chances are they’ll show up on your route again. I’ve had it happen numerous times. Sometimes this group continues as “loyal” customers. Contact the other dealers in your area, let them know who you’re looking for. Facebook and other social media are another great avenue. Along those lines, I always kept a lookout on
Facebook Marketplace for the tools I sold that were up for resale. That’s also the place where you’ll find $10,000 toolboxes for pennies on the dollar. It’s not uncommon for skips to sell items that they didn’t pay for.
USING A COLLECTION AGENCY
I have had decent success with collection agencies. I once had a car dealership call to pay off a skip’s balance. Their car sale was held up by my collection agency. I had them call my agent, and they paid the collection in full so they could complete the sale. The debt will catch up with the customer who’s reasonably responsible when their credit is checked in order to make a higher-end purchase elsewhere.
I went over five years on my last tour on a tool truck before I turned anyone over to collections. After I retired, though, I turned all my skips over to collections. I still occasionally receive a random check in the mail.
I’m happy to pay the agency’s fee for their hard work. It has gotten to the point where I couldn’t care less how much I receive as long as the skip has to pay someone. On the flipside, there’s also that group who have a track record of never paying and couldn’t care less about their credit. I’ll never understand that mindset.
REDUCING YOUR RISK OF SKIPS
My advice is to reduce your exposure. I’ve watched so many dealers
fail from financing big-ticket items on the truck. Just as concerning is allowing customers to carry balances that could never be paid in a five to 10-week turn. If your customer is turned down by your flag’s credit department, there’s usually a reason. Remember, a bad deal is worse than no deal. Don’t fall into the trap of carrying a toolbox balance on the truck only because the customer was turned down by your flag’s credit department. It makes more sense to have 10 customers owing $500 each as opposed to one customer owing you $5,000.
CREATE A FOUNDATION OF MUTUAL RESPECT
The tool business is based heavily on rapport and relationships. For me, the loss of money was second to the feeling of betrayal from someone to whom
you always provided the highest level of customer service. Like any relationship, there has to be mutual respect. When that respect is compromised, it’s nearly impossible not to feel bitter. Keep in mind, the person who skips on paying you more than likely has a history of doing the same to everyone else. Don’t let it poison you. It’s easy to be consumed by the 2 percent of customers skipping out on payments. Instead, focus on the 98 percent of customers who always pay you.
I once had a customer track me down to give me two top toolboxes before he moved to the East Coast. He explained he didn’t have the cash, but the two toolboxes were worth well over the amount he owed. He told me he couldn’t leave the area without making sure I was taken care of. Although he owed money on another truck, he felt an obligation to take care
of his debt with me first based on the respect I had always given him. “I will pay the other truck once I’m established with my new job,” was the last thing he told me.
The best way to reduce skips? Treat every customer with respect and provide the same excellent customer service you’d expect to receive in a reversed role.
BRIAN FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Providing premium service and his continuous “close to perfect” attitude, he achieved his goal of being a Top 10 dealer for Cornwell Quality Tools. He and his wife of over 44 years recently retired, moving from Oregon to the endless summers of Beverly Hills, Florida.

Creating a legacy
This
distributor took over his
brother-in-law’s route and plans to pass it on to his sons once he retires.
By Emily Markham, Editor
understood why Carlson was ready to retire after over 38 years with Mac Tools.
“[Chris] has such a strong work ethic,” Trombold says, “but all that I saw were these are opportunities for burnout.”
Just a few months into working with the distributor, Trombold knew that if he was going to do this, he had to ensure his eldest son, Thomas Trombold, would do it with him. He started making some notes of the pain points of being a distributor and what he could do to lighten the load.
Chuck Trombold didn’t start his career as a mobile tool distributor. Before joining the Mac Tools team, Trombold was a corporate environmental health and safety executive in the industrial waste, recycling, and disposal business sector. After being let go, he was at a bit of loss for what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, so he called his brotherin-law, Chris Carlson — a Mac Tools distributor.
Trombold figured he could lend Carlson a hand while figuring out his next steps. He started riding along with

the distributor and two weeks later decided he wanted to stay and help for as long as possible.
To that, Carlson responded, “I’m not looking for somebody to help me. I’m looking for somebody to buy me out. I want to retire.” The transition of Carlson’s route to Trombold happened in two phases: after three months of riding along with Carlson, Trombold took over the first half of his route. Carlson stayed for another year after that until Trombold was ready to take over the second half.
A DIVISION OF LABOR
During his time with his brother-inlaw, Trombold saw all the hard work and effort Carlson put in — getting up at 4 a.m. to load his truck, seeing his customers by 6 or 6:30, ordering new products, receiving freight, and taking care of his customers all at once — and
Now, Chuck Trombold has three trucks, each high volume and high sales with their own routes running through Midland and Odessa, Texas. To help prevent the potential of becoming overworked, Chuck Trombold notes that he’s done a lot more division of labor than most distributors.
“Each truck has two people on the truck,” he explains. “So, one person is on the computer, the other is selling and looking for stuff, so the customers can get on and off quickly. Then, coupled with that, we have two inventory people who basically receive inventory and get it ready for each of the trucks for the next day.”
Additionally, Chuck Trombold has another employee who handles all the broken and in need of repair tools by shipping them out and tracking their progress. All this put together, Chuck Trombold notes, helps keep the business going at a heavy pace.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
When Chuck Trombold initially took over Carlson’s route, he decided the best way to maximize the route’s success would be to cut it in half. Between splitting the route in two and his desire to keep burnout at bay, he began putting his team together. Chuck Trombold first looked to his sons – Thomas, Joshua, and Noah. And when the

success of the first two routes led to Chuck Trombold taking over another distributor’s route in the area, one of his son’s wives joined the team as well as some of his son’s friends.
Currently, Brandon Akers and Kenton Terry run the first truck, Thomas and Noah Trombold run the second truck, and Tolan Feagin runs the third. Joshua Trombold is the inventory manager and Travis Lubbeck is the inventory associate. Lubbeck will sometimes ride with Feagin, but his main focus is inventory. Terri Trombold is the manager of all tool repairs.
As for Chuck Trombold himself, he stepped away from running
a truck last March after having hip replacement surgery. Though now he only makes it out to Midland for one week a month, he stays busy learning everything he can about the industry by attending tool fairs and other Mac Tools events. He wants to stay on top of the latest tools and equipment.
“I want to learn what’s out there, because I was brought up as a guy who got his degrees in chemistry and business administration,” he says. “I wasn’t a tool guy.”
THE LEGACY AWARD
In his seven years with Mac Tools, Chuck Trombold has had the
opportunity to work with many members of his family. He understands just how crucial family involvement can be in this business, so he and Carlson worked with Mac Tools to create the Legacy Award. The award is meant to incentivize and recognize excellent family businesses. The 2026 Mac Tool Fair will be the first time the award is presented.
Looking ahead, Chuck Trombold plans to eventually pass the business on to his sons. In the meantime, he says, “I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done in the past seven years, and I’ll probably keep doing it as long as I think it’s fun.”

Finding new customers
Whether you’ve just moved to a new city, or you’ve been on the same route for decades, new customers are always just around the corner.
By the Professional Distributor Editors
In this industry, the potential for growth and change is constant. Customers are one of the biggest parts of that growth and finding new ones can sometimes feel daunting. We asked five distributors to share how they go about finding new customers, building rapport, and making the sale. Check out their responses.

Build rapport and trust will follow
“I’ll just go up and introduce myself if I go to a dealership and there’s a new
technician. I’ll give them a little bit of my background, give them some flyers, and then let them go. Then the next week, I’ll go in and talk to them again. It’s all about building that rapport with people. If they see you have interest in them, then they’re gonna start to trust you.”
-Rich Rossi, Cornwell Quality Tools
2 Follow your technicians
“Customers move around all the time. Just follow them. Follow them, and you get a whole new list of
customers where the new shop is. So that’s probably the easiest way to find new customers.”
-Chuck Trombold, Mac Tools

Take the path less traveled
Mac Tools distributor Leroy Hess has found a “gold mine” of untapped customers by visiting farms in his area.
“I grew up on a farm, and a lot of my farm customers ask, ‘Why do you come to my shop?’ and I tell them, ‘When I lived on a farm, we would have spent thousands of dollars on tools if someone would have come to us.’”
-Leroy Hess, Mac Tools

Use your history
“My boss has been doing this for well over 20 years, so we have enough clients that the senior techs are now foremen or running a new shop. They tell their new guys, ‘Hey, buy everything from here,’ so we get referrals from that. One of my customers went to the brand new, biggest BMW in Canada, and through him, I was able to sell A/C machines and some other kits without even touching them — I just shipped them right over.”

Make yourself available
When independent distributor Brian Deakins moved from one coast to another, he had to build a whole new customer base.
“I just started driving around, and I’d pull into shops. Then other times there’d be people somewhere, they’d see me and ask me to come by, like with the [Department of Transportation] garage. I didn’t know where that was, but they saw me somewhere and stopped me and asked me to come over. It goes a little bit of both, me pulling in or somebody asking me to stop by.”
