A MESSAGE FROM amfAR

Good evening and welcome to amfAR London.

Having held successful events in many European cities over the past 40 years, we are delighted to be hosting our first-ever benefit gala here in London and deeply grateful to you for joining us tonight.

amfAR’s ties to the UK go back many years. Our Founding International Chairman was London-born Dame Elizabeth Taylor, whose passionate advocacy inspires us to this day. We work closely with HIV research teams in the UK and have awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to scientists at institutions such as Oxford University and University College London.

Our research investments over the years have contributed to the development of many of the drugs that are helping to keep millions of people alive. However, the impact of our research extends far beyond HIV. The scientific advancements it has driven have become a springboard for breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and new responses to viral threats like COVID-19.

amfAR is building on this legacy of innovation and investing not only in the most promising paths toward an HIV cure but also in cross-disciplinary research that unlocks lifesaving discoveries for a wide range of diseases. By serving as a catalyst for bold biomedical research, amfAR ensures that every dollar invested has a ripple effect across global health, advancing further discoveries.

That’s why we’re here tonight. Events like amfAR London generate the vital resources that fuel our research and allow us to provide a critical lifeline to outstanding researchers in need of support.

Enjoy the evening—and thank you for your generosity.

THE DATE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HOSTED AT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION IN COLLABORATION WITH

JOELY RICHARDSON is a double Golden Globe-nominated actor for her work in television. She costarred for six seasons on Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck, appeared in The Tudors, and lately in the Sandman franchise and on Downton Abbey. She can also be seen in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, seasons 1 and 2, which is currently filming.

Joely started off her career in theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company, West End, Old Vic) mixed with independent films and the studio classic, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. Since then, she has worked extensively in America and England in both theatre and film.

At the 2014 amfAR New York Gala, Joely and her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, were honored with amfAR’s Award of Courage. Her sister, the late Natasha Richardson, served on the amfAR Board of Trustees.

DAME TRACEY EMIN

AWARD OF INSPIRATION

TRACEY EMIN’S art is one of disclosure, using her life events as inspiration for works ranging from painting, neon, drawing, video, and installation to photography, needlework, and sculpture. Emin reveals her hopes, humiliations, failures, and successes in candid and, at times, excoriating work. Emin’s art has an immediacy and often sexually provocative attitude that firmly locates her oeuvre within the tradition of feminist discourse. Her paintings, monoprints, and drawings explore complex personal states and ideas of self-representation through manifestly expressionist styles and themes.

Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963 and studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. She represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and was elected a Royal Academician in the same year. In 2011, Emin became the Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. In June 2024, King Charles III appointed her Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the visual arts.

Emin lives and works between London, the South of France, and Margate. Her next solo exhibition will be held at Tate Modern in Spring 2026.

NATASHA POONAWALLA is Executive Director of Serum Institute of India, one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, and Chairperson of Serum Life Sciences, driving global vaccine development and pandemic preparedness.

In addition, she is Director of the Poonawalla Science Park in the Netherlands and holds leadership roles with the British Asian Trust.

Building on her work in public health and philanthropy, Natasha is the Founder of Phinity, a pioneering venture creating a new global ecosystem at the intersection of wellness, culture, and sustainability. A patron of the arts and advocate for women’s leadership, she holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and is recognized worldwide for her influence across health, entrepreneurship, and cultural innovation.

J ESS GLYNNE

PERFORMER

JESS GLYNNE is a London-born singersongwriter who made history by becoming the first and only British female solo artist to score seven number ones on the UK Singles Chart—among them “I’ll Be There,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself.”

Jess rose to prominence in 2013 as a featured artist on the multi-platinum singles “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit and “My Love” by Route 94, both of which soared to UK number one in the charts. Since then, Jess Glynne has earned a GRAMMY Award, three Ivor Novello Awards, and nine BRIT Award nominations. With her first two chart-topping albums I Cry When I Laugh and Always In Between becoming Platinum bestsellers, Jess was named on Forbes’ notorious “30 Under 30” in 2019 following her sold-out world tour.

After taking a break from music, Jess signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, secured a brand new record deal with music giant EMI, and went full steam ahead into her new body of work. Jess Glynne has just released her third studio album JESS, already featuring in the Official Top Ten Charts. A hugely proud piece of work and six years in the making, JESS is representative of where she has evolved to musically and in life since the release of her previous album. Written between London and LA, the 15-track selftitled album is penned with a deep sense of empowerment through Jess’s intimate songwriting style, featuring soulful ballads and the quintessential pop anthems that have earned Jess the title of one of music’s most successful artists.

Adding to her accolades, in April 2024 Jess received the hugely prestigious BRIT Billion Award for achieving over one billion streams in the UK, following in the footsteps of previous winners Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Lana Del Rey.

GRACE JONES is a Jamaican-American singer, model, and actress. She began her career as a model, quickly gaining recognition for her striking presence and unique style. Jones became a muse for Andy Warhol, who photographed her extensively. During this period, she was a regular at New York City’s Studio 54, immersing herself in the vibrant cultural scene of the era.

In 1977, Jones secured a record deal with Island Records, launching a series of dance-club hits that established her musical reputation. Her singles frequently charted on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts, with the 1981 hit “Pull Up to the Bumper” spending seven weeks at #2 on the U.S. dance chart. Grace Jones also found mainstream success in Europe, achieving several Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart. Her most notable albums include Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing, and Slave to the Rhythm. In addition to “Pull Up to the Bumper,” her biggest hits are “I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango),” “Private Life,” “Slave to the Rhythm,” and “I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect for You).”

Jones expanded her career into acting in the 1970s. Her mainstream debut came in 1984 with the fantasy/action film Conan the Destroyer alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, followed by prominent roles in the 1985 James Bond movie A View to a Kill and the 1986 film Vamp. In 1992, Jones both acted in and contributed a song to Boomerang with Eddie Murphy. Her later acting work includes an appearance in Wolf Girl alongside Tim Curry in 2001.

Jones released the 2008 album Hurricane (Wall of Sound/PIAS Records), earning positive reviews. She supported the album with a 2008–2009 concert tour and performances at the Secret Garden Party and Latitude Festival. In 2011, Jones collaborated with Brigitte Fontaine on two tracks from Fontaine’s album L’un n’empêche pas l’autre and performed at the opening ceremony of the 61st FIFA Congress. Notably, she delivered a memorable performance during Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th Jubilee, where she sang while performing 10 minutes of hula hooping.

Jones published her memoir, I’ll Never Write My Memoirs, in 2015. In 2018, the documentary Bloodlight and Bani, directed by Sophie Fiennes, was released.

The singer is currently finishing work on her next album.

GLENN SPIRO JEWELRY: THE LUMA EARRING

Gold weight: 9.00 grams

Hyceram weight: 16.23 grams

Total weight: 26.20 grams

A striking pair blending innovative materials with timeless elegance. Crafted in Hyceram Luminex and 18K red gold, the earrings are elegantly set with two pearshaped Kyanites, totaling 4.83 carats.

The design is part of a limited-edition collection, with this pair numbered 5 in the exclusive series.

Known to collectors and aficionados, Glenn Spiro Jewelry, headed by master jeweler Glenn and his son Joe, has become one of the most renowned private jewelry houses in the world.

In their appointment-only London atelier, the former studio of fashion designer Sir Norman Hartnell, Glenn Spiro Jewelry combines exquisitely detailed settings with an eye-watering selection of unique stones. A couture piece of theirs can be years in the making and their technical mastery has gained a cult following of collectors. Glenn Spiro is renowned as having an unconventional approach to the Haute Joaillerie world, but it’s the risks they take in a realm dominated by old luxury marques and multigenerational businesses that truly set them apart. The house has a nonconformist attitude to precious gemstones—they attempt the impossible and dream up imaginative designs that have never been done before. The gems are the elusive varieties that jewelers dream about, sometimes for decades, until that sought-after stone with a spellbinding hue, intensity, uniformity of color, and inner sparkle finally surfaces.

The resulting jewelry turns heads for all the right reasons, commanding attention for its originality and the confidence that it embodies.

“We don’t make what people want; we make what we love—and if they love it, then great,” Glenn says. “If not, we’ll keep it in the safe until the right person walks through the door.”

Making an Impact

For 40 years, amfAR has funded research that has revolutionized the treatment and prevention of HIV, benefited diseases beyond the virus, and forged a path toward a cure that could end AIDS once and for all. These advances would not be possible without the generosity of supporters like you. Here are some of the ways your generosity has helped make an impact.

• Lifesaving treatment: amfAR’s research has contributed to the development of four of the six main classes of antiretroviral drugs in use today.

• HIV transmission: amfAR’s first international research grant, awarded in 1987, supported a landmark study in Kenya that showed that HIV transmission can occur from females to males, and vice versa.

• CCR5, a key protein: amfAR funded research showing that HIV almost always requires a protein called CCR5 to enter and infect cells. This breakthrough led to the development of the antiHIV drug maraviroc, which blocks CCR5.

• Curing HIV: The discovery of CCR5 paved the way to the first case of an HIV cure in 2008. This was made possible by a stem cell transplant using donor cells lacking the CCR5 gene. Several people have since been cured using the same method.

• Mother-to-child HIV transmission: amfAR pioneered research that led to the use of antiretroviral drugs to block mother-to-child HIV transmission. As a result, this mode of transmission has been all but eliminated in many parts of the world.

• Other medical breakthroughs: AIDS research is providing insights into a range of diseases, their causes, and their treatment. Better diagnostic methods, therapies to restore the immune system, newer preventive antibiotics and drugs, and new treatments for infectious diseases and cancer were all developed in the course of AIDS research.
