What level is right for you The number tells you the level of the qualification. You do not need to start at Level 3 to make good progress. The right starting point is the level that matches your current qualifications, skills and experience.
entry Typical entry requirement: No formal GCSE grades are usually required. Your starting point will be based on your current skills, experience and support needs. What you’ll do: Develop confidence, independence and core skills at Entry 1, Entry 2 or Entry 3, depending on the programme and your starting point. Where it can lead: Progress through the Entry Levels, move on to Level 1, develop greater independence or prepare for further learning and employment.
12

13
a Level Typical entry requirement: 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above. Some A Level subjects require higher grades in specific GCSE subjects.
T Level Typical entry requirement: 4-5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above. Some T Levels may require specific grades in subjects such as English, maths or science.

That is fine. We will look at your results, interests and goals and help you choose the right starting point. Where you start does not limit where you can go next.
15
understanding your options How do you want to learn? There is more than one way to study after GCSEs. The right route depends on what you want to study, how you prefer to learn and where you want to go next.
A, T and V provide a simple way to understand the main Level 3 routes available at Newham.
16

•

•
Want to develop specialist knowledge and skills
Where it could take you: University, higher or degree apprenticeships, employment or further study. T Levels combine College learning with an extended industry placement, giving students practical experience alongside their studies.
18
= Vocational Pathways Vocational qualifications focus on developing knowledge and practical skills linked to a subject or sector. For 2027/28, this includes existing qualifications such as BTECs, AAQs and diplomas, alongside the first new V Levels. V Levels are new Level 3 vocational qualifications being introduced from 2027. Each is equivalent in size to one A Level and can form part of a broader Level 3 study programme. How you will learn: Through a mix of classroom, applied and practical learning. This will vary depending on the qualification. Assessment: Could include coursework, practical assessment and examinations, depending on the course. Typical length: This may vary depending on the V Level and how it forms part of your study programme. Could be right for you if you: • Prefer applied and pratical learning •
Want to develop knowledge and skills linked to a particular sector
•
want a vocational route into further study, an apprenticeship or employment
•
want the flexibility to combine qualifications where available
Where it could take you: University, higher or degree apprenticeships, employment or further study. 19
QUALIFICATIONS ARE CHANGING From 2027, new V Levels will start to appear alongside A Levels, T Levels and existing qualifications such as BTECs, AAQs and diplomas. This means you may see a mix of existing and new qualification types in this guide. Some Level 3 qualifications make up your whole study programme. Others can be combined with another Level 3 qualification. You do not need to figure this out on your own. Start with what you are interested in and how you like to learn. We will help you understand your options and choose a programme that suits your GCSE results and future plans.
WHAT ELSE MIGHT YOU SEE? AAQs Alternative Academic Qualifications combine academic and applied learning and can form part of a wider Level 3 programme.
BTECs, DIPLOMAS AND OTHER VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS These will continue to be available during the transition. They come in different sizes, with some equivalent to one A Level and others equivalent to two or three. No route is automatically better than another. What matters is finding the one that works for you and where you want to go next.
20
21
building your level 3 study programme Level 3 qualifications come in different sizes. Some make up your whole programme, while others can be combined. WHAT DOES “EQUIVALENT TO AN A LEVEL” MEAN? It simply tells you the size of the qualification. Equivalent to 1 A Level Makes up one part of your programme. Equivalent to 2 A Levels Usually combined with one additional Level 3 qualification. Equivalent to 3 A Levels Makes up your full Level 3 programme. Not every combination will be available for every subject. We will help you choose a programme that works for you, your GCSE results and what you want to do next. 22
your programme could be: •
3 A Levels
•
1 T Level programme
•
2 A Levels + 1 V Level
•
A vocational qualification worth 3 A Levels , typically a BTEC
Whichever route you choose, your full Level 3 study programme will be equivalent in size to 3 A Levels.
23
college is more than your course What you study matters, but your time at Newham is also about the experiences, skills and confidence you build alongside your qualification. Alongside your main course or A Levels, your College experience can include English and maths where required, CORE and CORE+, careers education, work experience or an industry placement, educational visits and wider opportunities beyond the classroom.
core and core CORE and CORE+ are part of how we help you prepare for College, work and whatever comes next. CORE helps you develop confidence, communication, collaboration, resilience, responsibility, employability and the ability to take ownership of your learning. CORE+ opens up wider opportunities including enrichment, volunteering, student voice, leadership, employer engagement, careers events and preparation for work experience. 24
get involved College gives you opportunities to try new things, meet people and develop interests beyond your studies. Depending on what is available, you could get involved in clubs and societies, sport, competitions, trips, volunteering, events, leadership activities and student voice. You can also have your say through Newham Collective and help shape the College experience for you and other students.
BUILD EXPERIENCE FOR WHAT COMES NEXT Careers support starts while you are at College, not when you are about to leave. You will have opportunities to explore careers, meet employers, prepare for applications and interviews and, depending on your programme, take part in work experience or an industry placement.
support when you need it Everyone needs support sometimes. Asking for help is a strength. Every student has a course tutor and a Personal Development Tutor who can help you settle in, review your progress and guide you if you need support. You can also access support through Student Services, Safeguarding and Mental Health, Additional Learning Support, Careers and bursary and financial support. Help is available with learning needs, wellbeing, course concerns, attendance, personal circumstances, careers and financial difficulties. 25
what are you into You do not need to know exactly what career you want yet. Start with what interests you. Explore our subject areas and find the courses, qualifications and routes that could be right for you.
