Recess Reimagined.

Active Students, Better Classroom Outcomes

Recess is not separate from learning. It is learning.

When school playgrounds are designed with intention, they become more than equipment. They are environments that drive movement, build resilience, and support the whole child.

Youth physical activity research is clear: students need purposeful movement to thrive. Well-designed playgrounds increase active time, build strength and coordination, and develop physical literacy that supports lifelong health. They also cultivate problem-solving, collaboration, leadership, and self-regulation. These are skills that translate directly back into the classroom.

Research-Based Design: Using the Play On!® curriculum and standards-based design guide, schools can align playgrounds with national standards for youth physical activity, ensuring recess supports measurable growth across physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains.

Schools that implement Play On!® may qualify as National Demonstration Sites (NDS), receiving detailed reports that identify play value, document improvements in student health and wellness, and highlight the playground’s impact on overall community vitality.

When designed well, recess is not a break from academics. It’s a strategy to improve them.

Play Is a Science— and We Majored in It

School playgrounds designed with best practice research qualify as National Demonstration Sites by PlayCore. Learn more at gametime.com/nds.

Get Active

Play On!® is a research-led playground activity program from PlayCore, developed in partnership with SHAPE America and play experts at Louisiana State University. The guide outlines how to strategically design playgrounds around the Six Key Elements of Play, creating spaces that support both recess and physical education classes. To maximize the value of the space, Play On!® includes an activity curriculum aligned with national physical education standards—turning recess and PE into meaningful fitness experiences.

Include Every Student

The 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design is a researchbased design guide from PlayCore, created in collaboration with the Utah State University Center for Persons with Disabilities. Using these seven principles, the guide helps schools create playgrounds that support the developmental needs of students of all abilities. Together, the principles inspire richer play experiences that celebrate diversity and bring children together through play.

Developmental Domains

Designing playgrounds for schools involves addressing the five developmental domains: physical, social-emotional cognitive, sensory, and communication. When we thoughtfully design environments that support these areas, childhood development is enhanced, social skills improve, and academic performance accelerates.

The Play On!® framework is built around the Six Elements of Active Play, each targeting essential developmental benefits:

Balancing

Increases understanding of efficient body positioning and control

Brachiating

Improves muscular strength and endurance

Climbing

Boosts coordination and spatial awareness

Sliding

Strengthens core stability, balance, and lower-body flexibility

Spinning

Enhances balance and kinesthetic awareness

Swinging

Supports aerobic fitness, muscular force, and wholebody awareness

Built to Move

The 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design® offers a thoughtful, research-backed framework for creating spaces that address the need of the whole child, the whole environment, and the whole community through the following design principles:

1. Be Fair – Ensure equitable opportunities across physical, cognitive, communicative, socialemotional, and sensory development.

2. Be Included – Support flexible access through ramps, climbers, links, and transfer platforms.

3. Be Smart – Use intuitive, sensory-rich design to reinforce play patterns, set expectations, and create a wellorganized environment.

4. Be Independent – Promote selfdirected exploration with accessible surfacing, clear travel routes, and slide transfers.

5. Be Safe – Design to meet safety standards while also supporting caregiver visibility and engagement.

6. Be Active – Accommodate diverse needs through sustained physical activity, cooperation, and socialization.

7. Be Comfortable – Create space for both movement and gathering, meeting diverse sensory and physical needs.

All Means All

Seven principles so everyone belongs

One Space. Many Ways to Play.

This arrangement creates a smart, functional play environment that maximizes space using freestanding experiences. Freestanding equipment offers a budget-friendly solution for schools while still representing all Six Elements of Active Play. Benches are installed alongside the perimeter for children who might need a quick break before returning to play.

Built to Grow With Your Students

Every school deserves a great place to play. This playground is designed specifically for schools looking to maximize their budget, delivering lots of physical activity without compromising on fun. Freestanding play experiences, such as the Sensory Dome and Duo Spinner, are placed near the central system, creating fun, social play experiences students love.

Designed for Playful Connection

Every element of this space is designed to encourage collaboration. On the left, freestanding equipment like the Duo Spinner and Sky Runner rely on momentum from at least two students for movement, naturally fostering new friendships. Expression Swings create attunement between riders as they move together, strengthening social connection through play. Musical instruments encourage creative and social play among students.

Quick Facts

Designed for the Way Kids Move

Playgrounds like this one utilize freestanding experiences to reduced congestion and accommodate more simultaneous users. Accessible poured-in-place rubber surfacing uses color to define different play zones, providing visual cues to help organize the environment so that it is easier to navigate and understand.

Sensory Rich and Sensory Smart

This playful space encourages children to explore a variety of sensory-rich features and freestanding motion and movement activities. These elements facilitate cooperative play and support motor planning and development to help children of all abilities comprehend and discover the world around them.

Let the Games Begin!

Children bond through friendly competition, and this playground design encourages it with a cyclical layout. A variety of climbers extend from the main system, branching out to either side, inviting children to use their imagination to create tracks and race against each other.

Bring the Whole School Together

Freestanding equipment, such as musical instruments or the Bounce Bash court, adds variety to the play space and appeals to children with a wide range of interests. These collaborative play zones naturally encourage social interaction, helping students build meaningful friendships through play.

Play. Their Way.

Inclusive playgrounds aren’t just about providing equal opportunities for children of all abilities—they’re also about welcoming different play styles and interests. The play space includes inclusive features such as ramps, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, an inclusive whirl, and half play panels providing both physical access and social inclusion for students who use mobility devices.

Designed for Belonging

This selection of equipment is ideal for schools aiming to create a well-rounded play environment with diverse play opportunities. Features like the Communication Board offer inclusive opportunities for children to communicate with their friends and teachers, while multiple high-capacity zones support physical activity across age groups.

GameTime has play systems to fit your budget, your space, and your style!

*Brachiating is the very scientific word for overhead climbing.

Brachiating

Brachiating, or overhead climbing, requires alternating arm movements across the body’s midline, helping students develop essential physical and cognitive skills:

• Develop hand-eye coordination, core strength, and grip strength

• Strengthen bilateral coordination and cognitive processing

• Assess risk and build problemsolving skills through trial and error

Climbing

Playground climbers provide a fun, dynamic way for children to build physical strength, social skills, and confidence:
