Eureka Math Lesson Structures

We are often asked for clarification about the differences between the elementary lesson structure and the secondary lesson structures. When preparing for instruction, it is certainly helpful to understand the differences in order to capitalize on the design.

A Story of Units (Grades PK-5) Each lesson in A Story of Units is comprised of four critical components: fluency practice, concept development (including the problem set), application problem, and student debrief (including the Exit Ticket). Each component described below serves a distinct purpose. Together they promote balanced and rigorous instruction.

Above is the suggested lesson structure for Grade 2 Module 1 Lesson 5.

Fluency Practice: Almost all lessons begin with this component to support development of fluency skills for maintenance (staying sharp on previously learned skills), preparation (targeted practice for the current lesson), and/or anticipation (skills that ensure that students will be ready for the in-depth work of upcoming lessons). This component provides daily opportunities for students to gain confidence and motivation for continued learning.

Concept Development: This component addresses the new content being studied. Therefore, it is often allotted the majority of the instructional period to give students time for discussion and reflection. The concept development is generally comprised of carefully sequenced problems centered within a specific topic to begin developing mastery via gradual increases in complexity. It is also accompanied by an additional set of carefully crafted problems called the “problem set.� Teachers are encouraged to make choices within this set of problems to provide their students with generally about 10 minutes of additional practice.

Application Problem: In most lessons, this component is included to provide students with an opportunity to apply their skills and understandings in new ways. Sometimes the application precedes the concept development, functioning as a springboard into the new learning of the day. Often the application follows the concept development as an extension of learning.

Student Debrief: Every lesson closes with this critical component in which the teacher engages students in a whole-group discussion, challenging them to share their thinking and draw conclusions. This allows the teacher to gauge student understanding of the concept of the lesson, offering another chance for students to gain understanding before attempting the exit ticket.

Story of Ratios (6-8) & Story of Functions (9-12) >>>

A Story of Ratios (Grades 6-8) and A Story of Functions (Grades 9-12) Mathematical content naturally increases in its complexity with each grade level. In order to address the level of difficulty at the secondary level, the formats of the lessons take on different forms starting in Grade 6. Each lesson is formatted as one of four types, each driven by the specific content of the lesson, including: problem set lessons, Socratic lessons, exploration lessons, and modeling lessons. (Notice that the term “problem set” arises as an entire lesson format in grades 6–12, leading to the need for clarification.)

Each lesson of the teacher materials for grades 6-12 begins with one of four symbolic icons indicating the instructional format of the lesson. The icon shown above indicates that this lesson, Grade 7 Module 2 Lesson 1, is a Problem Set Lesson.

Problem Set Lesson: This lesson format is the closest comparison to the lessons within A Story of Units. This format consists of teacher-led examples that are generally followed by guided exercises in which students apply their understanding to related problems. There are often short discussions within these lessons helping students make critical connections to develop understanding of concepts.

Socratic Lesson: Some content within the grades is of greater difficulty and it is necessary to maintain a dialogue with students to develop their understanding of such concepts. The Socratic lessons are primarily student/teacher discussions centered on the difficult concepts.

Exploration Lesson: Students are presented exploratory challenge(s) in the form of activities and/or exercises in which partners or small groups work toward achieving a common goal.

Exploratory challenges comprise the majority of the lesson.

Modeling Lessons: A practice that intensifies with each grade in middle and high school mathematics is the ability to model mathematically. Many misinterpret modeling as the use of manipulatives to show how the mathematics works. However mathematical modelling actually refers to the use of mathematical models to solve problems that arise in the real world. The modeling lessons consist of well- or ill-defined application problems for students to complete.

These problems involve the real world application of the mathematics that is learned in the classroom. The lessons are primarily reserved for high school, but there are at least three modeling tasks throughout each middle school grade level curriculum.

Through the course of this description, we’ve used the term “problem set” in more than one way. At grades 6–12 there is, as described previously, the problem set lesson. However, regardless of format, each K-12 lesson has an associated problem set, a supplemental set of problems based on the content of the current lesson. The major difference in the meaning of the term problem set lies in how the problem set is used. The PK-5 problem set is expected to be used as part of the classwork whereas the 6–12 problem set is generally expected to be used as independent practice at home. Either way, teachers are encouraged to be flexible in their use of items from the problem set to best meet the specific needs of their students to support their conceptual understanding.

b. Curricular materials support the development of students’ conceptual understanding of key mathematical concepts.

Eureka Math develops students’ conceptual understanding in critical ways, emphasizing deep knowledge building and ensuring that students understand the “why” rather than just the “how” of math. Concepts progress coherently so students understand that they are building on what they already know rather than starting over with every new topic.

Conceptual Development progresses along a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract sequence. Students first explore concepts through the hands-on use of manipulatives. Unlike many curricula that largely stop manipulative use after only a few grade levels, Eureka Math recognizes how vital the concrete stage is to conceptual understanding and therefore maintains consistent manipulative use throughout the elementary curriculum.

Students then progress to drawing visual models and representations, which provides multiple points of entry and expands students’ problem-solving toolbox. These visual models are accompanied by the corresponding abstract symbolic representations, highlighting connections between the two. At the end of the progression, students can drop the pictorial representation and continue with the abstract representation. This progression builds a strong foundation of number sense and provides students with a deep conceptual understanding.

Each Eureka Math lesson begins with a short series of engaging Fluency Activities. Students actively participate in their own learning during fluency exercises. Whole-group activities such as Sprints are carefully designed to promote and celebrate individual growth while providing an engaging class opening to stimulate the joy in mathematics.

The curriculum features three primary types of fluency: Sprints, white board exchanges, and counting activities. It also includes suggestions for other fluency activities, including mental math activities; interactive drills; quick and efficient games with dice, spinners, and cards; and written concept drills.

These activities help students strengthen previously used skills, prepare for the learning of the day, and anticipate the learning of future lessons. Teachers can also use these activities as a check for understanding, identifying opportunities for intervention. The curriculum labels activities by standard, so teachers can swap out activities if they feel students need additional review for specific standards.

Example Grade 4 Module 1 Lesson 1 opens with a Sprint and a Rapid White Board Exchange (p. 22). Lesson 2 begins with a group counting activity (p. 37).

Christine Bingham, math advisor, curriculum and instruction for Shelby County Schools, attributes part of the progress to the district’s commitment to “stay the course” with Eureka Math. Indeed, a Stay the Course document is one of the pillars of the district’s approach to professional development. It includes advice for pacing within a lesson and for pacing topics and lessons over the school year.

“If students are struggling, there’s always a temptation to revert to shortcuts such as test prep,” says Bingham. But, she notes, “the research is clear. Any progress with a new curriculum takes three to five years of implementation.”

Bingham believes the middle school scores improved partly because students got a better grasp of the big ideas of math—and got it earlier. “Teachers say students are coming to them better prepared, with better conceptual understanding,” she says.

FOCUSING ON STANDARDS AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT One of the district’s priorities has been to help teachers thoroughly understand the state’s content standards at each grade level and show teachers how Eureka Math aligns with those standards. “For each standard, we really want the teachers to see what students should know and be able to show,” says Bingham.

Another top priority this school year is to encourage more student discussions and engagement. “We see the work and know that student understanding is growing. But we want to hear more conversations about math in classrooms,” Bingham says. “During our walk-throughs, we’re spending much more time seeing the extent to which teachers are letting go and letting their students do more of the heavy lifting” of thinking and helping each other learn.

Scores Up for Students—and for Teachers Too TRUST THE PROCESS. That is Jared Myracle’s advice for educators using Eureka Math® and, not coincidentally, the hashtag he uses on all of his social media posts.

Myracle, the chief academic officer at the Jackson-Madison County school district in west Tennessee, had the district start using Eureka Math when he first arrived in the 2017–2018 school year. “We dove right in,” he recalls.

Student achievement gains have been impressive. The percentage of students scoring proficient or above on the TNReady state math test has increased an average 4.4 points in Grades 3–8 and Algebra I. Gains have occurred in all grades. “Less than 25 percent of the state did that well,” says Myracle.

Previous years had seen steady declines in student achievement across the district, enough to put Jackson-Madison schools into “turnaround” status as one of the lowest performing districts in the state. “In terms of growth, we’ve gone from mind-bogglingly low, the second worst of 146 districts in the state, to about 50 spots higher,” says Myracle.

MULTIPLE SUPPORTS FOR EDUCATORS

The educators acknowledge that implementation was challenging in the first year. Implementing immediately in all grades meant that older students were playing catch-up from day one, having to learn foundational concepts such as place value that were taught in earlier grades. “That first year was tough,” Moffitt recalls. “It took me a whole year to learn the curriculum myself. I’d take it home at night.” Gordon says he tries to teach the lesson two or three times “inside my head” before instructing his students.

The district supports teachers in several ways: training twice a year from Great Minds®, the company that created Eureka Math; weekly planning meetings; an instructional coach in each school; teacher leaders managing crossdistrict professional learning communities; and stipends so that teachers can participate in after-school training. “We place a real premium on intellectual preparation,” says Myracle.

“It’s no small thing to change a curriculum across a whole district,” he acknowledges. Adults are often reluctant to give up old methods and materials. “But what’s comfortable for the adults may not be what’s best for the kids,” he says.

School Experiences Major Gains in First Year with Eureka Math, Goes from Failing to Inspiring Others in District Lakewood Elementary School in Durham, North Carolina, deemed a failing school for a few years under the state’s accountability system, was at risk of being taken over by the state at the end of the 2017–2018 school year. Principal James Hopkins, who had been leading the school for only a year, knew he had to take some major steps toward turning things around. One of the key changes he made was adopting Eureka Math®.

The decision was among several factors that led to tremendous math achievement gains for Lakewood students, and the school is no longer considered failing or at risk of being taken over. Rather, the school district is looking to Lakewood as an example and is now implementing Eureka Math in its other schools.

Lakewood made gains in math in every tested grade—double-digit gains in most cases—on the state’s end-of-year mathematics assessment between the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 school years. Hopkins credits his teachers. “I hired incredible teachers who allowed themselves to be vulnerable and coached,” he says, adding that they worked so hard to try something new and succeed with it.

He also says Eureka Math helped drive the improvements in teaching and learning. “It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a curriculum push and challenge the way kids think,” says Hopkins. “I can actually see it. The kids’ attitudes toward math are so much better now than before. I feel like they’re more confident and willing to ask questions, and they’re making the necessary connections in class.”

LAKEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA Lakewood Elementary math coach Megan Lewis agrees. “I really think the biggest change that we saw was in our expectations for students, having higher expectations for what these kids could do,” she says.

Lewis added that before the adoption of Eureka Math, the school didn’t have a coherent and consistent curriculum, and teachers were generally left to create materials or find them wherever they could and those resources, or the lack of them, made it hard for teachers to push students to think deeply and make the necessary connections in mathematics.

“CHEERLEADING” FOR COLLEAGUES Pacing can be a challenge in the first year with Eureka Math, according to Hopkins and Lewis, but they say teachers should stick with it, knowing that the curriculum revisits key concepts during a given year and across grade bands. “My job for the first half of last year was mainly to be a cheerleader,” recalls Lewis. “Part of what I was trying to do was encourage people to see the bigger picture and remember we’re not curriculum designers. I had to ask them to trust the process and remind them that somebody put a lot of thought into this.”

Hopkins says the school went from 75-minute math blocks to 90-minute blocks in fall 2019. “Our teachers were inspired by this curriculum,” he explains, “and one way to foster success is that you give them more time to do what they like and what works.” He added that the teachers use the extra time to help struggling students, offer learning extensions, study and analyze the curriculum more closely, and apply student performance data to drive further success.

Lewis says one of the biggest differences she sees between Eureka Math and other curricular resources is the emphasis on deep conceptual understanding of math topics over rote memorization and quick tricks for solving math problems. “We know if we just teach them the tricks, eventually they get lost when they get up to middle and high school,” she says. “They need that conceptual foundation.”

LEARNING NEW STRATEGIES Lewis says she also likes how Eureka Math teaches new models and multiple strategies for solving problems. “The chip model for division is the one that none of us ever taught before seeing Eureka Math. All fourth- and fifth-grade classes are now using it, and I’m so excited about it,” she says of the model, a pictorial representation that shows what the steps in the long division process actually mean.

Lewis appreciated attending a Eureka Math summer institute for professional development before using the curriculum. Both she and Hopkins say in-school professional development with a Eureka Math trainer was very effective in getting teachers up to speed on the curriculum. Lewis notes that a Grade 5 teacher delivered the training, which reinforced that this was a curriculum written by teachers for educators and their students. “I realized that this person had a lot in common with me. It wasn’t just somebody who had never been in a classroom before,” Lewis says.

Now, as the other elementary schools in the district make the switch to Eureka Math this year, Lakewood is positioned to offer guidance and help where needed. Hopkins and Lewis say it’s great to be able to give back and share their knowledge of the curriculum and the story of their students’ and teachers’ success with it.
