CUSTOMER SERVICE VS AVAILABILITY ARE there signs that the worst of the global supply disruption is easing off? If you are superstitious then now’s the time to touch wood, but a couple of fastener bosses have hinted that the worst may be over.

Availability has been one of the big topics and there has been an awful lot of emphasis on stock and being able to fulfil customer orders in this time of supply chain trials and tribulations.

Does customer service still factor into the equation when availability is king? If you’ve got what the customer wants, then that’s enough, surely? It’s certainly hard to deliver good customer service if you can’t fulfil a customer order, but relationships and service remain vital to continue to win business.

In this magazine, one interviewee says: there’s often not much difference in your price compared to your rivals, so customer service is the differentiator. Being dependable and sourcing anything a purchaser needs is a balm for repeat business. It’s something savvy businesses have recognised for years.

Like bicycle shops offering quality coffee to discerning punters, looking after customers remains just as important as it ever was, eg essential.

WORDS MATTER I am sure that there was a period in the last two years when a count was kept on how many times the word unprecedented would be used in a week. That filter quickly narrowed down to daily usage and latterly into just one meeting or even a report. It seems the use of the adjective is indeed unprecedented!

Adjectives tethered to these times and occasions include agile, resilient, adaptable, flexible and supple.

Strategic documents, board meetings, emergency and mandatory reviews are all garnished with a vocabulary that expresses a collective determination to survive or thrive.

In our industry of fasteners (fastening, noun, a device that secures something) the pressures of raw material and freight costs, lead times, antidumping duties, microchip shortages, labour availability, legislation and compliance, disrupted supply chains and rising energy costs all converge.

This convergence is met head on by major changes in technology combined with, and partly driven by, a concerted political will to see skies brighter, air cleaner and humanity healthier in all its forms.

Seminal, by definition, is not a frequently used word and typically is a judgement based on looking to the past. At this juncture in time it is hard to believe that these frenetic activity levels combined with the pace and scale of change, leaving many firms in our industry gasping for breath and asking “what next?”, can be described as anything other than seminal.

There is no immunity here at TR from these factors, but we have developed our countermeasures while finessing our strategic intentions to adapt.

Focusing on recruiting functionally appropriate resources to support compliance and our continued expansion, while significantly investing in our global manufacturing footprint and supply chain partners to reduce supply chain risk and enhance our product offering. Blend this approach with resilience (noun, the capacity to recover from difficulties, toughness) and we find that hybrid working, remote communication and a lack of in-person contact are no barriers to outstanding teamwork.

€1 billion club > Norma and fischer performance indicate strong times for the industry

n spite of multiple challenges facing the fastener and related industries, the sector is in rude health, judging by financial reports and anecdotal evidence. NORMA Group and fischer group are among those closing on or exceeding billion euro sales records.

NORMA Group, based in Maintal in Germany, generated Group sales of €1,091.9 million in tax year 2021. This is a 14.7% increase in revenue and well above the figure for the previous year, which was severely impacted by the corona pandemic (2020: €45.3 million).

Family business, fischer Group, based in the Northern Black Forest region of Germany, reached a record high turnover of €988 million in 2021. Despite Coronavirus and other pressures fischer not only increased production and turnover but also increased staff numbers by 200. The largest division of the company, fischer fixing systems, has traditionally contributed disproportionately to group growth and in 2021 it saw an 18% year­on­year increase in turnover.

This was due to innovative new products and a growth of services to various fixing customer groups, the group said.

While some of the increases will be attributable in part to price increases, anecdotal reports gleaned from conversations Torque Magazine has had (with numerous fastener distribu­ tors) indicate that increases are also due to busy industries and high demand, as well as over stocking as distributors look to protect themselves against potential disruption ahead.

Notably, the aforementioned financial reports don’t cover periods impacted by the latest significant disruptor to the European supply chain – the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, indications of continued high confidence continue, with acquisitions persisting in the market, across various continents (Torque Magazine Digital March 2022).

JRP Riveting Products unveils brushless technology aton Riveting Products (JRP), the dedi­ cated riveting brand from Owlett­Jaton, has launched what it said is a market­ leading range of battery­powered tooling to complement its existing hand­tooling range.

Capable of installing the JRP blind fastening products, the four new tools are some of the most compact power­to­weight ratio tools to be introduced to the marketplace, said JRP. The tools have seen rigorous market testing in the UK, by experienced window fitters, roofing and cladding contractors, automo­ tive/rail metal fabricators and light/heavy commercial vehicle builders, the feedback received included the ease of use, speed of use and lightness.

Available late April, the tools feature Brush­ less Technology (BLDC) motors to offer increased reliability, high power­to­weight ratio, nearly instantaneous control of high speed and torque, high efficiency, and low maintenance.

The tools are powered by a 18V 2.0Ah Li­ ion battery designed to give higher perfor­ mance and increased runtimes of almost 120 minutes, depending on the tool model and fasteners being set. As standard, each tool comes complete with two batteries, a charger, and a damage­resistant case.

aul Swift has been appointed Managing Director of ForgeFix, the fixings and fasteners distributor which supplies over 5,000 products lines to a network of national and independent retailers and merchants throughout the UK & Europe. Swift joins from Tyman PLC, one of the leading global players in window and door hardware man­ ufacture, where he was Head of Sales at Zoo Hardware.

Olosky becomes Simpson President

urrent Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Simpson Manufacturing, Mile Olosky, has been promoted to President in addition to his role as COO. The move will see Karen W. Colonias, previously President and CEO, continue as CEO. Olosky will continue to report to Colonias.

BUFAB BUYS TIMCO FOR £54 MILLION > TIMCO (Ti Midwood & Co), with annual sales of GBP 60 million, has been snapped up by Sweden’s Bufab, for approximately £54 million.

Headquartered in Nantwich, Cheshire with an additional sales office in Monaghan, Ireland, TIMCO is one of the UK’s best known fastener firms. TIMCO was Bufab’s second acquisition in a month, having bought Danish C­Parts trader Pajo Bolte.

ACHILLES LOOKS TO THE FUTURE With new projects designed to future-proof the business and revamped facilities, family-run Achilles Seibert is entering a new chapter under the sole guidance of Timo Scholle…

T

his year saw Achilles Seibert GmbH’s long standing General Manager and Partner Timo Scholle assume sole responsibility for the firm.

The move came after jointly running the family­run company for 11 years alongside Henning Scholle, who held the role of Managing Director since 1987 and has now retired, alongside Marion Scholle.

Was it daunting for Timo Scholle to take on sole responsi­ bility of the C­parts and special fastener specialist, particu­ larly in these unusual times?

“Since I am actually already more than 15 years in the company and 11 years in management, I have seen some disruption in the fastener industry during that time, so it is not totally daunting,” Scholle tells Torque Magazine. “But, of course I have a large amount of respect for the current situa­ tion, since now I am totally responsible for the company, the staff and families.”

DEALING WITH DISRUPTION 2022 has continued to pile on the disruption, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and, in terms of trade, Europe’s fresh anti­ dumping duties on fasteners from China.

Both have helped to slow business down, “but we’ve still achieved the same turnover as the last quarter of 2021.

Compared to the third quarter of 2021, that was a small turnover reduction, but it’s still all on a very high level,” confirms Scholle.

Preparation has been key to success: “We put everything in place and measures into motion last year, so our stock avail­ ability is good and we can be pretty confident into 2022.”

How has the disruption impacted on Achilles’ customers?

“They still trust in local stockholders and buy more based on short term demand instead of maybe planning two to three weeks ahead with producers in EU, since they are also very full.”

The impact of anti­dumping has been partially mitigated by Achille’s experience of what happened last time around, explains Scholle: “We all have been aware of the consequences and the possible outcomes of anti­dumping thanks to the anti­ dumping tariffs that were brought in back in 2009.

“I believe this time the effect is not as dramatic, also it is not coming at a time when the economy is declining. The prices are rising due to limited capacities and disrupted supply chains. We, and I believe most customers, took action early enough to change purchasing markets. That in itself was not an easy task, because of Corona.

“Luckily it has always been our purchase policy to split the demand into different markets. That maybe did not always give us the best price due to limited quantity from our side, but now we are happy to have current and established purchasing rela­ tionships in several markets. So, our incoming product flow is very good and equal.”

Scholle adds: “I hope that due to all the disruption, the market will start to trust in the local importers and stockhold­ ers and not try to streamline their supply chain too much. We have seen what could happen.

“I also believe that fasteners market is following that trend in the food industry – there will be more of ‘buying locally’.”

PROJECTS, PROCESSES AND THE FUTURE Achilles Seibert had a number of projects tabled for 2022, and that list of updates has grown following the change in leader­ ship, including tackling IT and streamlining processes, as Timo Scholle explains: “Now with the takeover, there are even more projects and changes to come. In the lead up to half year, it is up to us to change and adjust the workflow process to the new situation, adapting the staff to their new positions and smoothing everything out.”

The firm has significantly revamped and refitted its facilities over the 2021/2022 financial year, refitting the offices with new carpets, plus air conditioning with an anti­viral filter.

There’s a new office structure and a gym has also been installed for the staff. Achilles also now has a bank of solar panels to generate its own electricity.

“In the second quarter we will be working on a new docu­

ment management software, to streamline work process and complete our aim to have a paperless office. That helps us to continue offering home working for staff if wanted.

“That will enable us to work on the important challenge of having a zero error policy and 100% traceability on products.”

Scholle reveals that even more significant investments are tabled before the end of 2022: “In quarter three we will start to continue to increase our product range to serve the demand of our customers even better. Later on, we will finally start to build our warehouse extension, which was put on hold due the corona crisis.”

With measures in place and underway to help future­proof­ ing the business, Scholle’s masterplan is to have Achilles to be more integrated with customers and even more mindful of looking after its employees.

“In five years, I’d like to see Achill as a second home for the employees, since work power will be a limited resource in the future, so we need to keep our power together.

“Business­wise, I’d like to see Achill as a secondary ware­ house for our customers, which is fully integrated into their ERP system, so the customer can see and use the stock and our services at any time without investing into it.

“I am looking forward to the rest of 2022, even though we are facing now a totally new situation in Europe with terrible war at our front door. But after the last two years, I believe we need to look ahead and go out again. I am looking forward to finally meeting suppliers and customers again face­to­face, instead of only on the screen. A

s we move through the second quarter of 2022, it does seem as if there is some light at the end of the tunnel of supply chain disruption which has been challenging the industry. Covid is still with us, but across the world, there seems to be a movement away from lockdown and restrictions towards living with the virus. There are still substantial numbers of cases and these may rise as restrictions are lifted, but the risk of health systems being overwhelmed seems to have passed.

Fewer restrictions should ease some of the port congestion which has been plaguing the shipping industry and been a major contributor to the unreliability of scheduled sailings. In turn, this may ease the imbalance between supply and demand and allow shipping rates to ease. Though most commentators seem to think there will be little downward price movement in 2022.

// The introduction of Anti-Dumping Duty (ADD) on Chinese imports has forced many importers to change their supply away from China. // On the supply side, there is some evidence of shortening lead times from Far East manufacturers, though there is still some way to go to get back to pre­pandemic lead times. This, coupled with some shipping improvements, has helped improve stocks and availability across the industry.

But, there is always a but, we have seen other challenges hit the supply chain. The introduction of Anti­Dumping Duty (ADD) on Chinese imports has forced many importers to change their supply away from China. In turn, this has pushed up prices outside China, costs which will inevitably have to be passed on. The implementation of ADD, particularly with differential levels between Chinese suppliers, has caused some headaches, but, progress is being made on the new processes needed to cope.

And then there is the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Not only is there the terrible impact on the people of Ukraine, but the war will impact all of us. Rocketing energy and nickel prices, major impacts on the global economy and demand, disruption of supply chains dependent on Ukrainian, Russian or Belorussian supplies are all making their mark. At the time of writing it is not clear

whether these will be short or longer­term problems, but once again the industry has a set of disruptive challenges to face.

So, through challenging times we made the investment in people to grow that team out.”

However, the growth that this newly expanded team brought, and buoyed by rapid demand and growth of existing opportunities, created a fresh challenge. Optimas’ Bredbury location was quickly beginning to experience capacity issues.

Stevenson continues: “Some of our key customers’ demands outstripped expectation. With further growth forecast for 2022 we’ve taken the decision to expand capacity at the Gloucester facility by up to 15% and relocate stock for larger customers from Bredbury to Gloucester, freeing up 30% of capacity at Bredbury. The aim – to improve the flow of mate­ rials throughout both facilities and allowing us to better service our customers.”

Maintaining this high­level of service is clearly not without its own challenges as the ripple effect of the pandemic contin­ ues to be felt. Raw material shortages, supply chain issues, getting parts onto planes and boats, port closures and now energy price increases – seemingly a new challenge every month. How do businesses adapt to counter these continuing pressures? In Optimas’ case, through modernisation, a programme of investing in technology and realigning people to improve communication and focus.

First implemented in early 2021, Optimas invested in the Toolsgroup advanced production and capacity planning soft­ ware offering the ability for greater planning efficiency and accuracy, even for the most uncertain of demands.

“Some of our customers don’t know what their bill of mate­ rials consists of. They don’t know how many of each part goes on each product that they manufacture. Some build many vari­ ants of each product resulting in many different bills of mate­ rials and that brings complexity. They can’t give us forecasts or demand predictions at a SKU level. They can tell us what machine they’re going to build, but they don’t know what goes on each machine.

“The Toolsgroup software automates a lot of what our plan­ ners do on a day­to­day basis but also helps with customer forecasts in terms of what we put out to our suppliers,” explains Stevenson.

In addition to this planning automation, Optimas also intro­ duced a much­needed business upgrade in the form of a new ERP system to allow improvements to multiple functions across all locations. Gone are the reams of paper and processes of manual

data entry, replaced by advanced handheld scanners, communi­ cating with the powerful Netsuite cloud­based software.

“Both Toolsgroup and Netsuite have brought us into the future. It’s modernised what we do,” comments Stevenson.

“The software allows the whole team globally to access all our inventory data in real­time. This is proving to be a massive benefit, not just internally, but how we service our customers.”

Further illustrating the company’s resolve to maximise resource and evolve in pursuit of heightened customer satis­ faction, Optimas took steps to merge teams, aligning the Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) with the Supply Chain Planners, making both roles customer­facing and in doing so, massively improving communication and focus.

However, there are aspects of Optimas unique approach that remain unchanged – an “above and beyond” mentality when it comes to the service of customers. The lengths the company has gone to in providing an industry­leading service for loyal customers are perhaps unrivalled, the company theorises.

Already boasting a large­scale, global footprint, and with a reputation for eliminating complexity, on more than one occa­ sion, and at the customer’s request, Optimas has quite literally followed customers, establishing facilities in different loca­ tions (even countries) so that these customers have access to local operations.

abory has been a specialist in fastening solutions for a mighty 75 years, which is not only a milestone worth cele­ brating, but also chance to take stock of its progress so far.

Fabory Director Francisco Terol says: “We are proud of our history: from a family business in The Hague, we have grown into a leading European partner in fastening technology. FROM THE HAGUE TO TILBURG In 1947, Karel Borstlap and his father started selling screws and tools from the parental home in The Hague, where the stock was literally stored under the stairs. It is the beginning of a success story, which runs from The Hague via Scheveningen to Tilburg. When the municipality of Scheveningen did not offer the possibility of new construc­ tion, the family moved to Tilburg. There they were looking for employers with growth ambitions because of the declin­ ing textile industry. In 1968, the company moved to the south, and in the following few years Scheveningen was still kept on as a branch.

INDEPENDENT LABORATORY In 1996, Fabory (then still Borstlap BV) started using the auto­ mated miniload in the central warehouse in Tilburg, which made it one of the first wholesalers to invest in a computer­ controlled warehouse. The laboratory was another significant distinguishing factor. In March 1998, the Borstlap laboratory received its A2LA accreditation and was recognised as an inde­ pendent laboratory that may issue product certificates.

NEW FULLY AUTOMATIC WAREHOUSE Terol picks up the story: “After the acquisition by Torqx in 2020, we further strengthened our position as a fastening specialist. Thanks to investments in our digital proposition and smart logistics solutions, we can respond even better to the changing demands of our customers.”

The Fabory boss also points out the role of the new fully auto­ mated warehouse in Tilburg, which has a direct link with the automated order picking warehouse. “We are taking an essential step in the further development and growth of our organisation.”

Güde’s new 1,400 m2 plant in Poland uses the same raw materials, quality system and IT links as the manufacturer’s HQ in Germany

asher manufacturer Güde is an A1 supplier in the fastener industry, producing safety washers, wire bended parts as well as screw and spindle fastening devices on self­made machines and toolings.

Headquartered in Plettenberg, the 100% family­owned business is now in its third generation with CEO Lutz Güde and currently sees a turnover in the region of €24 million and 2.7 billion pieces sold, shipping up to 140 pallets of products to customers every day.

Key customers are the mayor distributors with the some key markets rail and energy. With its spring washers, locking washers and PAL nuts well suited to those and further sectors.

Over the decades, Güde’s development has seen it move to its current Plettenberg location in the 1990s, while other notable expansions have included a particularly fertile period between 2012 and 2018, when it grew 60% in terms of location size.

One of Güde’s most recent expansions/developments has seen it bolster its manufacturing capacity further with the construction of a new production plant in Poland.

The new plant is over 1,400 m² and Güde is aiming to have eight employees there by the end of the year.

Güde CEO Lutz Güde explains to Torque Magazine: “There are several reasons behind the decision to build the new plant in Poland, such as capacity in terms of space and machine output. We are investing in completely new machinery to enlarge our capacity; we are not shifting machines from our HQ to Güde Polska.

“Other reasons as the skilled labour shortage, costs for energy and the perfect infrastructure of Poland made us the step. One Polish employee who used to work for us took the decision to take the lead of the new plant – that was like a win in the lottery!”

IT & LEAN LOGISTICS As the manufacturing sector has modernised, the emphasis on IT systems has got ever greater and that’s certainly the case at Güde. The Güde CEO believes the new plant will satisfy the firm’s needs for the coming years. Ultimately, the expansion has been made to satisfy customers, as he explains: “Our customers demand from us short delivery times and perfect service. Due to the rising demand and the many turbulences the market faced the past two years the supply of raw materials was not too steady.

“We are aiming to build up more stock and raise availability for our worldwide customers. In terms of quality, we are deal­ ing with the same raw material in Poland as we are Germany – also the same machinery and the same quality system as in our plant in Plettenberg.”

021 saw several major impacts on the UK fastener market including Covid restrictions, Brexit, supply chain disruption and substantial price inflation primarily driven by higher ship­ ping costs. In spite of all of these chal­ lenges, 2021 seems to have been a good year for most companies as strong economic growth following the hard lock­ downs of 2020 drove activity.

Covid already seems to be receding in the memory as the UK drops its last restrictions and the health system seems unlikely to be overwhelmed. Stock levels are rebuilding across the market and busi­ ness seems to be returning to more normal pre­Covid levels.

Brexit is still very much with us, it was sold to the British public, at least in part, as throwing off the shackles of Brussels and heralding a new era of Global Britain trading freely across the world. Sadly, the reality of leaving the world’s largest trad­ ing bloc, the EU, has proven less rosy.

There is additional administration and costs when trading with EU customers and suppliers. On top of that, the UK is

now split by the Northern Ireland proto­ col which has created a border in the Irish sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. Effectively for trade purposes, Northern Ireland is in the EU. However, processes have been adapted and trade with the EU and Northern Ireland continues. It’s more expensive and lead times are longer, but goods are flowing. Thankfully fasteners are not subject to phytosanitary regulations which have (apparently) been a night­ mare. However, we now have our own complication in the form of Anti­Dump­ ing Duty (ADD).

For the UK, ADD is a bit of a two­edged sword. On one hand, ADD does not apply to mainland UK and we can continue to source at the best commercial rates for that market. However, when it comes to selling to the EU and Northern Ireland it becomes more complicated. Finding the best commercial solution for those customers is not easy, the best answer for export may not be the best answer for mainland UK, potentially leading to duplicate ranges and stockholding. With

levels of duty on affected products being dependent on manufacturer, the docu­ mentation needed to be able to prove to customs authorities that lower duty rates may be applicable is quite a challenge. I have no doubt that we will work our way through these challenges and, as with Brexit, processes will adapt and trade will continue – it just might take a while to get it all to work.

ADD also brings the risk of circumven­ tion. It is clear the European Commission are going to be policing this very rigor­ ously and that the UK is seen as a high­ risk route for circumvention. With duties as high as 86.5% there is considerable money at stake. The combination of large amounts of money, high levels of scrutiny from the Commission and multi­level duties will require considerable focus over the next few months to ensure we can put robust processes in place which meet the requirements of the authorities and do not leave any of us open to claims of circumvention. www.owlett-jaton.com

cell­its E-007 and E-007-T are the world’s first battery powered tools for installing hollow wall anchors.

They are part of a new economical range of tools – the ‘E­00’ series – that lower the entry level price for battery powered setting tools. The other two tools in the new range include a Rivet setting tool – the E-005, and Rivnut setting tool – the E-008.

usiness is flying for the Insert Company right now and the company believes treating all customers the same – and having the right staff – have been cornerstones behind its success.

Sales Director Kevin Broome picks up the story: “As a business, we are flying.

Some people might dismiss that as price increases, but we are seeing new customers and genuine growth.

“We get customers who order a sample from us online and then it goes from there.

We are a company where we treat every­ body the same, whether they buy a few parts off us or a million parts off us. We want their business.

“We treat all our customers as impor­ tant and it can grow from there – you never know who that person or company will develop into!”

That philosophy has paid off for the Insert Company, gaining some big­name clients at home and abroad, including Siemens in Germany and distributors in the Netherlands and Denmark.

Are exports more tricky in the post­ Brexit world? Not exactly, Broome reveals: “It’s marginally harder than it used to be, but as long as you have the right paper­

work and you know what you are doing, it’s not too bad.”

Thanks to strong cash flow, the Insert Company is in a position to hold massive amounts of stock: “We can buy six or 12 months worth of stock at a time – we don’t work hand to mouth.”

Broome is positive about the state of the market. “I think we are coming out of it now. People just seem to be really really busy.”

The signs are strong for the UK market, reckons the Sales Director: “All our customers seem pretty buoyant. Signifi­ cantly, they are paying us on time – that’s

a sign the market is strong. If you look back 10 years or so ago, in the financial crisis, people would be waiting for a cheque to clear before they could pay us… it’s very different now.”

Online trade continues to be strong for the Insert Company and the website often serves as an introduction where new customers order samples and go on to become regular customers making big orders.

The Insert Company is known for offer­ ing threaded inserts for wood, plastic and metal. Another growing part of the busi­ ness is specials – the firm gets a lot of parts manufactured in the UK for customers, whether turned metal parts, metal presswork or plated finishes – or a combination of those.

Broome concludes: “I’m very happy with the business. The key is having the right members of staff and a philosophy of the customers coming first. Things are going well and we’re looking to move to a larger unit – we have been running two units and we are looking to move some­ where larger in the local area in the coming year or so.” www.theinsertcompany.com

UKCA > ENSURING FASTENERS AND FIXINGS MEET THE MARK After the UK government granted an extension to the UKCA marking deadline in 2021, businesses were given more time to make necessary changes. Yet in the context of product testing, 1 January 2023 is imminent. As such, action is required now to ensure products are compliant for placing on the UK market. Here, Hugh Mansfield-Williams, Technical Manager at Warringtonfire explains more…

W

ith the second quarter of the year upon us, the seemingly innocuous date 1 January 2023 is rapidly approaching. The day, which marks the start of a new year, is pertinent for manufacturers given that it is the cut­off point to meet UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) requirements. For all goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scot­ land), UKCA is the new UK product marking replacing the previously required CE marking.

To meet the requirements for UKCA marking by the deadline every product must be assessed so that its performance can be declared. With structural timber connections, whether the fasteners and fixings are forming timber to timber or metal to timber joints, this requires hundreds of different tests on dowel type fasteners such as nails and screws. So, how can this be approached?

THE NUTS AND BOLTS UKCA marking must be applied to most structural timber fasteners and fixings. In

doing so, manufacturers are adhering to the Construction Products Regulations in the UK (UK CPR). This regulation is very similar to the EU­wide Construction Prod­ ucts Regulation (EU CPR) and establishes the prerequisites required to bring construction products onto the UK market.

The UK CPR creates five attestation systems, with products categorised on risk to determine which system they belong to.

Each system has different combinations of tasks for manufacturers and Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB).

Structural fasteners and fixings for timber sit in System 3. This means any dowel­type fasteners, i.e., nails, screws, staples, steel dowels and bolts with nuts that are intended for use in structural timber connections must all be tested in accordance with the designated stan­ dard, BS EN 14592. Such testing must take place in a UK­based Approved Labo­ ratory that is accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and listed on the appropriate DLUHC (Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities) website. It should be

noted that even if these fasteners and fixings have been tested since 2013 in an EU Notified Laboratory outside the UK, they will still need to be tested again in a UK Approved Laboratory to support UKCA marking.

DO THEY MEASURE UP? Testing requirements for dowel­type fasteners will differ on a case­by­case basis. In practice, some will simply require careful measurements to ascer­ tain the product’s geometry and dimen­ sions match the advertised product description and specification. Meanwhile, others may be ‘tested’ to determine the yield moment of the fastener by static calculations based on the yield strength of the steel the fastener is fabricated from.

Specific examples that require no mechanical testing are bolts and dowels.

On the other hand, nails and staples, whether loose or collated for use with nail guns, will undergo both geometry measurements and mechanical testing.

An outline of the various supporting standards of the test methods outlined in BS EN 14592 follows:

Put through their paces: Product testing must be completed ahead of 1 January 2023, the UKCA marking deadline BS EN 1382 for withdrawal resistance (also known as a pull­out test), which indicates how much force it takes to pull the nail or staple from the timber for a certain length of point­side penetration.

BS EN 1383 for resistance to head pull­through. This test is similar to the withdrawal testing, but it shows how much force is required to pull the head of a nail or staple through the head­ side timber.

BS EN 1383 for resistance to head pull­ off. This test is essentially the same as the head pull­through test, but a steel plate is used instead of the head­side timber. This causes the fastener to fail so that its tensile capacity is determined.

BS EN 409 for yield moment testing of those fasteners where static calcula­ tion is not an option. This is a mechani­ cal test that determines the resistance of the fastener to bending.

For screws, while testing is very similar, there are a few key additions: BS EN 15737 for torsional resistance to driving in of screws. This test deter­ mines how much turning force is required to drive the screw into a selected substrate.

BS EN ISO 10666 for the torsional strength of the screw itself. This test determines how much torque can be applied to the screw head before the screw snaps. The result should be significantly higher than that of the driving in test.

Usually, C16 grade softwood timber conditioned at constant humidity and temperature will be used for withdrawal, head pull through and torque resistance

testing. The laboratory will measure the density and moisture content of the timber as part of the test.

It is worth mentioning that every diam­ eter within the fastener range needs to be tested, but not every length. Also, the Approved Laboratory will not test mate­ rial properties such as the yield strength of the original steel rod, or indeed the effectiveness of any corrosion resistant layers applied on the surface of a fastener.

The obligation lies with the manufactur­ ers to declare the necessary performance for these parameters.

SPRING INTO ACTION There is plenty of action required from manufacturers ahead of the UKCA marking deadline. Carrying out careful planning remains key to ensure full ranges of prod­ ucts are UKCA marked, especially as repeated testing is required in some instances. It is especially critical to progress structural timber fasteners and fixings test­ ing sooner rather than later because UKAS accredited Approved Laboratories, such as Warringtonfire, are extremely likely to face high demand. Completion of the accredita­ tion process is imminent.

As well as testing, adequate planning around preparation of literature, declara­ tion of performance certificates and pack­ aging etc. must be accounted for. To prevent disruption to operations come 1 January 2023, preparation for product testing should commence now.

NEW MD FOR VICTORY FASTENERS There’s a new Managing Director at major stockholder and manufacturer, Victory Fasteners, which this year is celebrating its first decade in business…

T

his year, Victory Fasteners passes its 10th year anniversary and one of its longest serving employees, Mike Cooke, is taking the reins as Managing Director, from April. Cooke now heads up Victory’s senior management team of Finance Manager Paul Bytheway and Sales Manager Lee Howell, with Founder and Director Vic Waddison, guiding the business forward as it grows.

Victory Fasteners’ decade of success has been based on factors like flexibility, diversity of ranges and Europe­ready product. The firm plans to build on its existing principles to hit a £5 million turnover target within three years.

Vic Waddison explains: “Our stock range is very diverse, with blanks now up to 800mm in length and M6>M64 in diam­ eter, with imperial equivalents in grades 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 and B7/L7. Additional ranges include DIN 6921 blanks in 10.9 and now 8.8 , Blanks in 10.9 ISO standard, Blanks in SAE 5 and now we’ve got Grd 12 DIN 985 Nylocs into the range… it’s all those different ranges coming together.

“I think that’s the unique thing about Victory, it’s our diversity of stock. We can do a one­off in the machine shop. We can cut it, screw it, drill it, plate it, patch it, and deliver it to the customer within a reasonable time.”

The firm has been investing in machine purchases, including the Polygon Trishul machine and automatic drilling machines.

New MD Cooke tells Torque Magazine that reducing dependence on other companies has driven some of the firm’s recent purchases, giving the company added control.

STOCKS, EUROPE AND TRACEABILITY Extra stocks purchased in the last year proved to be a savvy move for the firm, although, with hindsight, they would have bought in more while prices were lower than today (and who wouldn’t?).

Victory Fastener’s philosophy of hold­ ing stocks appropriate for the European market has been a long­term strategy that

is paying off, as Waddison explains: “Busi­ ness comes in cycles, like anti­dumping.

The Europeans will stop buying out of China because of the extra duty, which will mean the Chinese manufacturers will have additional capacity, so they will lower their prices to try and supply the UK in bigger volumes. The Europeans will be inundated with orders and won’t have the material pushing prices up and deliv­ ery times will extend. What we are trying to do, and always have done, is try and get 95% of our stocks as a European option, particularly on our range of blanks.”

Cooke adds: “In theory, anti­dumping duties have helped our product as we’re one of the very few companies that specif­ ically promotes European product here in the UK. It has been a successful strategy in the last 10 years and has come into its own. Our stock is fully traceable, which is essential for our customers.”

Waddison explains: “The ERP system that was introduced in 2018 allows the stock to be fully traceable within the system. Every product shows the lot numbers, heat numbers and test certifica­ tion where required. All product coming in are now governed by this. Credit where it’s due, Mike has taken this system by the horns, ensuring successful implementation and software upgrades that allow us to quickly adapt background processes to adhere to new legislation.

Cooke says: “We produce around 10­15 certificates per day now. When the despatch note is printed, the test certifi­ cate goes straight out. It cuts out a very manual process and saves two or three hours in the QA office.

“We are a growing company and improving efficiency is a key part of this growth. Our ERP software ensures we are more streamlined and can adapt to exter­ nal requirements. An example of this would be the need for product specific country of origin, our system will track the country of origin, following the prod­ uct from start to finish. It will attach the correct commodity code to the finished product, and this will show on our docu­ ments without the need for manual input.”

2021 turned out to be a record year and Q1 2022 was the best quarter on record.

The new Victory MD himself is steeped in fasteners, his father having worked machines in the fastener industry for 50 years. Cooke clearly picked up on his knowledge and within months of starting in Caparo’s machine shop, he was then offered a move into the sales office, where he grew his experience of selling fasten­ ers. He stayed for five years until leaving for Vic Waddison­founded Icon Fasteners, where he enjoyed a five­year stint, then leaving for Victory Fasteners in 2013.

Cooke arrived at Victory Fasteners in the very early days, just one year after Vic Waddison and his wife set Victory Fasten­ ers up (with just a laptop, picnic table and chairs, and a single industrial unit).

Waddison praises the new MD: “We’ve seen steady growth, we have been quite grounded and financially prudent, so we have kept our risk low. Mike started as Sales Manager, Director and is now

Waddison says: “From an export point of view, the adaptability of our software has helped us make sure we have the right information on our documentation.

Although we are a stockist and have nearly a million pounds worth of stock, we trade quite a lot, so we have shipments coming in from the bigger European sheds, almost every day now.”

“Sometimes, out of normal working hours, Mike has driven orders out to customers to help them hit their dead­ lines. You have to offer something differ­ ent. People are often offering the same product at similar prices… offering an exceptional service puts us ahead. It’s about relationship and drive.”

FOCUSED ON ADDING VALUE Victory is 100% focused on distributor business rather than the end­user. The company adds value to the products it sells: “On recent analysis, two­thirds of what we do has some kind of added value, whether that is plating, patching, machining, drilling,

or a combination of any of those.

“68% of what we do is not the norm.

For our distributors who don’t have the facilities to do it, or the manpower, they just want quality product delivered on time and finished to the standard required. It might cost them a little bit more, but it’s finished and it’s ready to go when it arrives. It’s fully traceable back to the original manufacturer’s certification.”

He adds: “This is our niche, we do it and do it quickly. We have built strong relationships with our trusted subcon­ tractors and supply base; this enables us to respond faster to meet our customers’ needs. Our site location is in close prox­ imity to the majority of our subcontrac­ tors allowing for a quicker response. We try to make the whole process as simple as possible for our customers.”

RECRUITMENT & AMBITIONS Alongside the replacement of some of its older machines for more efficient versions, Victory Fasteners is also revamping the HQ office space, so staff can work together in one room, reflect­ ing the senior management belief that “you tend to feed off each other… it’s a good buzz”.

Like much of the rest of the industry, it’s a struggle to find good recruits, Cooke remarks: “We have an agency looking for us, but we have warned them it won’t be an easy job…”

Waddison says: “We want someone with drive and desire to be part of some­ thing. We’ve had staff from previous businesses come to join us. I think we are unique as we ask a lot of our employ­ ees, we are a small company, and we all want to be successful.”

Despite various obstacles, business is good, concludes Waddison: “Things are going extremely well, despite all the things that have been coming at us. You think you’re over one thing and then something else happens. We’ve had Covid, Brexit, oil and gas, energy hikes, materials shortages, price increases and now the regrettable situation in Ukraine… you just don’t know what’s next. But everyone is in the same posi­ tion. All we have got to do is do the best that we can.

W

e all know the frustration of trying to hold a screw on to a screwdriver or driver bit along with trying to hold a bracket or hinge in place, nine times out of ten one of the components drops on the floor and the process starts again. In an industrial automation environment, it’s slightly different in that you need a different method to hold onto the screw without it dropping off and having a hole with a missed fastener. Traditionally magnetic bits or vacuum suction systems have been used, but they have their own draw­ backs. You can’t use magnetic bits with stainless or non­ ferrous screws and vacuum systems can wear needing constant attention with associated assembly downtime. So, how do you “stick” a screw to a bit so that it doesn’t drop onto the assembly area or factory floor? Well, it’s all in the geometry.

The images below show the geometric interference between the driver bit and screw recess. This interference creates the “stick” effect. A combination of clever tolerancing, precision tooling and heading and strict quality control combine to create drive systems with the following benefits:

The regions of interference are located on the inner surfaces of the driver bit, this negates wear on the wings/lobes of the bit ensuring that it does not wear prematurely and slip out of the recess. The slip effect is known as “cam­out”.

There are other geometric interference systems that use a button at the end of the driver bit which interferes with an extended recess in the bottom of the primary recess. This system works but, has the drawback of increasing the total recess depth thus reducing the wall thickness between the recess and the screw shank creating a weaker screw.

he main requirements for screw drive systems have changed only slightly in the last hundred years. The devel­ opments during this time were manageable. The focus was primarily on the development of the screw itself, despite great potential for improvement also in the drive system.

The last major development in this area that has established itself worldwide was the Torx drive from Acument Global Technologies. However, the original development is already five decades old. Investigations of market and customer needs as well as a comparison of different screw drive systems have now led to a new development that provides significant improvements compared to many well known systems.

As part of a cooperation with screw and tool manufacturers, such as Hans Schriever GmbH & Co. KG and KIRCHHOFF WITTE GmbH, comparative investigations with professional screws and tools over a wide range of dimensions could be carried out. Extensive series of tests were able to confirm the theoretical approaches of the system, in particular the optimi­ sation of the service life of the bits.

The new TOBI®­DRIVE SYSTEM from bogenus GmbH repre­ sents a real innovation with impressive properties, not only for the screw, but also for the bit and thus the entire drive system in its interaction.

THE CONCEPT OF DRIVE GEOMETRY The main design features of the drive geometry in the screw recess are large concave (inwardly curved) radii and small convex radii. In the axis­parallel section, a taper to the bit tip is an essential feature.

The interaction of bit and screw shows in many studies that the new drive system shows significant advantages over previ­ ous systems and in particular the Hexalobular­/Torx system: Reliable stick­fit, work easily overhead No loss of screws and axial alignment Maximum increase of tool fatigue life up to a factor of 70 Automated screw­pick with running or non­running spindle Ideal for non­magnetic screws (aluminium, titanium, stain­ less steel) Reduction of stresses in drive system Improved torsional strength on the test bench, 60% compared to Torx and 30% compared to Torx Plus Reduced drive bit wear Reduction of bit tension Hexalobular­/Torx­ and AW bits can be used Downsizing of drive size Suitable for miniature screws In addition, the TOBI screws are compatible with the previ­ ously common Hexalobular­/Torx­ and AW bits, so they can be used without any problems for maintenance.

The improvements are the result of several years of inten­ sive development work in cooperation with screw and tool manufacturers and could be proven by the following research results, some of which were achieved in cooperation with the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

The bits clamp easily in the screw due to the conicity, so that the screw is held on the bit under its own weight without addi­ tional magnet or screw holder. This leads to safe vertical working both in hand­held use and in automatic screwing. Furthermore, a very good centring of the screw tip is achieved by the conical seat, which facilitates and ensures the error­free joining process.

AUTOMATED SCREW DRIVING PROCESS In fully automatic screw assembly, each worn bit not only results in tool costs, but also high costs due to the replacement of the tools. After all, every tool change means plant downtime.

By utilising the maximum available contact area between bit and screw recess, bit wear and thus the tool change time of the TOBI®­DRIVE SYSTEM can be reduced to a minimum.

Fig 3: Pick-And-Place e.g. non-magnetic screws IMPROVED ULTIMATE TORSIONAL STRENGTH FOR THE BIT In comparative tests on the Schatz test bench with the corre­ sponding tool as a counterpart for the different bit sizes, increases in torques up to the destruction of the bits compared to the Hexalobular­/Torx bits around 60% could be confirmed.

Bit-hardness: 60 ±1 HRC, Depth in tool: 2.7mm. Fracture: TX30, 38 Nm, TOBI B30, 61 Nm and comparison of results of different sizes IMPROVED LIFETIME OF BITS The utilisation of the maximum available contact surface as well as an improved contour of the drive surfaces is an important prerequisite for achieving the optimal service life of the bits.

Paired with the axial alignment of screw driving tool (bit) to screw axis (force attack), whereby handling errors can be effectively prevented, the TOBI®­DRIVE SYSTEM achieves service lives of up to 70 times compared to conventional Hexalobular­/Torx bits and up to 30 times compared to Torx Plus bits in laboratory tests.

These areas have already been confirmed in current application projects and thus create a significant benefit for reducing down­ times, for example for automated screwing systems.

OPTIMAL DISTRIBUTION OF FORCES IN THE DRIVE SYSTEM From the bit’s point of view, the large concave radii compared to the Hexalobular­/Torx recess lead to tangential­radial force results in the contact zone, which cause a form­ and friction­ locking torque transmission via compressive forces and fric­ tion forces. The comparatively small deviation of the transverse recess from the ideal circular cross­section leads to a very efficient cross­section utilisation.

This is reinforced by the fact that the bit becomes more and more flexible towards the tip and thus allows the torque to increase gradually not abruptly, but over the longitudinal axis.

Therefore, the stress distribution is distributed more evenly not only over the transverse recess, but also over the longitu­ dinal recess and thus over the entire volume.

olt Industrial Plastics held a ground­breaking ceremony for an all­new 36,000 ft² expansion, earlier this year.

Plastic fastener manufacturer Volt is located outside of Yellville, Arkansas, and this expansion will now give the factory a total of 100,000 ft², allowing it to expand its current inventory of over 100 million parts to even more.

Employing just under 100 people, Volt not only manufactures plastic fasteners which are shipped domestically and inter­ nationally, but also builds all of its tooling and parts in­house. This results in huge cost savings which is then passed on to its customers, it says.

“I want to say thank you to each and every one of you that work here every day and work so hard,” said Heidi Volltrauer, Volt’s COO/President of Marketing and Sales at the brief ground­breaking cere­ mony earlier this year. “I hope you're all as excited as I am of where we're going this next year and the years to come. here was definitely a ‘first day back at school’ buzz to the Troy Means Business show this year. The buzz is not that surprising bearing in mind Covid and the resulting isolation. It was clear that despite the masks, there were lots of people catching up with news and gossip as well as looking at new products and picking up the usual round of excellent show deals. And as the banners around the show said – Stronger Together. I am sure that many dealers would have appreciated the support and buying power that Troy gave them at critical times.

The other thing that Troy always does for its members is to make the day (and evening) as much fun as possible. Whether it is having a track experience in a very fast car or attending the gala dinner at a posh hotel in the evening, or watching the Troy Directors doing silly things before being entertained by a guest comedian, Troy Means Business could also be Troy Means Fun.

Following the Covid lockdowns, lots of people took the opportunity to catch up at Troy Means Business

The Silverstone Wing is a perfect place for shows because it is large enough without being cavernous, but small enough for visitors and dealers to be able to get around the show in the time available. And the Silverstone caterers serve a great lunch too.

There were a few new things to look out for, which is a bit of a bonus, bearing in mind the ups and downs of last couple of years. But the pandemic has also served as a pause during which companies could review their products and bring in some of the incremental changes that go to the making of good and desirable tools.

INNOVATION – NOT DEAD BUT RECOVERING One such was the ToughBuilt craft knife/Scraper which unsur­ prisingly won the Troy Innovation Award at the show. It is a great little compact knife that quickly converts into an effective scraper with a simple twist of the blade. Aside from its excep­

It was also good to see that a lot of companies, are trying, in various ways, to address the issues of sustainability and energy use. There is definitely more to come on these issues, but the groundwork has been laid.

What I really liked about this TMB 2022 Show was the catch­ ing up with old contacts and seeing that the business of tools and fixings is in rude health. Clearly the past two years have been tough, but optimism and confidence were much in evidence. There will always be difficulties to overcome but on this showing, the tool business will come through. www.tmb-show.co.uk

Amba believes it is the first machine in the world able to produce screws of this length and diameter from the coiled wire to the finished product in a continuous cycle. With a throughput of up to 80 screws per minute, it “sets a new industry benchmark”.

The new machine works according to the Amba­devel­ oped all­in­one principle, i.e. all process steps ­ from paying off, cutting to length and straightening of the wire to head forming and thread rolling – are performed on just one machine.

There is a growing demand for full-thread screws of 420 mm length in wood construction There is a growing demand for full­thread screws of 420 mm length in wood construction, as a result of the current architectural trend of building wooden houses. While this has a long tradition in the southern part of Germany, more and more wooden buildings are being constructed in northern Germany. With the new machine, screw­making shops can produce both full­thread and partially threaded screws at high cycle rates directly from the wire coil, meet­ ing the growing requirements of the market.

Georg Haas, Head of Sales at Amba, explains: “Our all­ in­one machines achieve much higher throughputs than single­purpose machines that specialise in individual process steps, as rolling, for example. With the new machine, it is no longer necessary to feed, clamp, process and remove one item after the other. Instead, we have transferred discontinuous manufacturing into a quasi­ continuous process. In certain applications this may result in a productivity rise by one order of magnitude.”

The first 420­mm screw making machine will be deliv­ ered shortly to a customer in Germany. Traditionally used in two types of wire drawing prod­ ucts, surface coatings and dry drawing lubricants, borax has not been uncontroversial for over 15 years. Condat explains: “Often employed in wire preparation after acid picking and phosphating, borax coating is used to improve the pick­up of the dry drawing lubricant and to neutralise any acid residues on the wire. It is also sometimes incor­ porated as a high performance additive in dry drawing lubricants. However, due to its chemical composition, it has been identified several times by the European Union for the potential Reprotoxic danger it represents.”

Labelling and packaging regulations will change from this December, with products containing ≥ 0.3% borax and/or boric acid classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B in the Euro­ pean Union. Hazard statements and warnings will be required, with new requirements on handling for many EU countries.

The ramifications for businesses could be significant, which is part of the reason why Condat has an alternative.

The last four years have seen Dimac invest funds and energy in industrial reorganisation, for research and development, for the opening of a new production site and for the opening of new agencies around the world, despite the negative trend of the automotive market and of the economic situation due to the pandemic.

The industrial reorganisation led to the hiring of young engineers for mechanical and software design, project managers, service technicians and management specialists.

New procedures and methods have been introduced to monitor production and the company management through dedicated KPIs. The investment projects in R&D involved the complete renewal of hardware and software for inspection machines, the implementation of industry 4.0 concepts, the introduction of artificial intelligence, the intensive application of solutions for the detection of appearance defects on flat and cylindrical surfaces, the development of modular control stations dedi­ cated to the NDT control of the quality of the material, the 3D scanning of the pieces, the improvement of the automatic SPC controls and the certification of the measures.

The new production site is a work in progress with lead time for the second half of 2022 with new offices for management and R&D, a new showroom and a conference room for training courses and seminars.

In 2021, the busy company saw new agencies in Brazil, Mexico and the Balkans added to the existing sales network.

Dimac will present two new machines at Wire 2022: MCV6 and SPC­EVO. The new MCV6 is a large diameter glass rotating table which allows the inspection of pieces at high speed (up to 1,000 pcs/min) thanks to the reduced centrifugal force.

The feeding system can be customised according to the geometry and orientation of the pieces. Optical inspection stations allow for accurate dimensional inspections using part profile analysis and for surface flaw detection with

BASS > EXTENDED TAPPING PROGRAMME FOR THE NUT INDUSTRY The wire trade show will provide chance to see BASS’ exten­ sion of its product range for tapping in the fastener industry.

The German manufacturer now also offers its nut tap AMGB V starting from diameter M8x1.25, or M8x1 and corresponding UNC as well as UNF threads. The AMGB V is designed to be connected to the shank via a cartridge. If the torque gets too high, only the cartridge breaks, leaving the tool and shank unharmed.

Another new product is the AMGB RM with the shank already welded on. The combined product is available with a bent or straight shank to match the machine connection and is used especially for small dimensions.

From the front line > The first in a short series of interviews with trade counter managers about Covid, trade, shortages and strategies

This interview is with Jim (not his real name) who has many years of experience running a trade counter. The premises is situated in a smallish town in East Sussex on an industrial estate that can be quite busy, with competing businesses close by.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS? It is a timber merchant supplying a wide range of hard and softwoods to trade and retail customers. Because it has an up­ to­date machine shop it is able to supply custom­made joinery from mouldings, solid wood panels, to doors to worktops etc.

HOW MANY STAFF ARE EMPLOYED AT YOUR BRANCH? We have five staff but are currently recruiting for another. One is a specialist driver, the others work the trade counter and yard. These are integrated roles as a result of a rethink post Covid. With the need for social distancing, the old ‘yard’ staff were trained to be public facing, because no customers were then allowed into the yard to select their own timber in order to comply with social distancing.

including, more motivation, quicker customer turnaround times, better health and safety outcomes (no cheeky customers trying to dodge the forklift for example) and much neater timber stacks since customers are no longer allowed to work through the stacks looking for that mythical beast – the knot free batten of softwood!

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE IN DEMAND NOW AND ARE YOU ABLE TO MEET DEMAND? Sheet materials are in high demand even though at the moment there seems to be no particular signs of shortage as shipments arrive regularly. This however, doesn’t prevent a number of customers buying more than is needed for their stocks indicating that perhaps they fear a shortage or are buying before the inevitable price rises that seem to be rife in the timber supply chain.

Specialist timber, like Russian birch ply, is increasingly diffi­ cult to obtain. That reflects the situation in Eastern Europe as well as sanctions. We’ve seen two price rises in as many weeks.

Most of our softwood is high quality stuff from Sweden, and

we have had difficulty sourcing thicker sections for window and door sills, and framing. There is still supply but ordering ahead is probably a good tactic for customers who need to guarantee being at the front of the queue.

Sawn joinery quality timber is also in high demand particu­ larly in thick or wide boards. It is a situation where you have to get what you can get to give you some stock.

A general use timber like Accoya that used to be freely avail­ able, is also now in short supply. It is a sustainable and dimen­ sionally stable timber that is treated and then used for outdoor applications like decks and windows where it is expected to be very durable.

While the demand for fixings has slowed down (perhaps the proximity of a well known company ending in ‘Fix’ close by may explain that) demand for other products like Titebond adhesives and Osmo oil have made up for the shortfall.

YouTube and other social media channels seem to have done well with keeping these and other brands to the fore.

Customers don’t seem to mind paying premium prices for some materials when they have seen an advert/blog saying how good it is.

In the first lockdown, shortages of materials meant that orders for paints and oils might arrive only one third fulfilled.

Even with limited demand, it was not enough to satisfy it. The situation is a lot better now, but prices are rising!

PRICE RISES – WHAT IS YOUR VIEW? At the moment they seem to be inevitable and regular. Quite early on in the pandemic the cost of shipping at least doubled and continued to rise. This has caused price rises on all mate­ rials that have to be shipped or transported – pretty well everything, in other words. But if you want to meet the demand then you have to bite the bullet and place your order.

Some customers have taken to ‘buying in bulk’ to ensure price stability on quotes and to avoid shortages and price rises.

HOW WERE YOU AFFECTED BY COVID? IF SO WHAT WERE THE COPING STRATEGIES? During the first lockdown the shop shut completely for two months. Then, when essential workers were allowed to work again, three members of staff returned to work with the familiar restrictions we all remember – masks, screens, card only trans­ actions and limiting the premises to three customers at a time.

Despite these restrictions, one member of staff contracted Covid. The shop was closed for ten days while he had to remain isolated. Other staff members were monitored for Covid, but the experience ensured that the rules were followed despite some behaviour from customers who wanted to relax them.

This did lead to some ‘explanations’ being needed for more pushy customers but the cost of closing a shop for a ten­day quarantine remains a powerful argument for keeping the rules in place.

ARE THINGS BACK TO NORMAL – OR CAN YOU IDENTIFY OTHER CHANGES? The core market for timber seems to be quite stable and customers are still capable of requesting surprising things – like the £200­plus order for a plank of macassar ebony that would fit on a large tea tray. For making snooker cues apparently!

But the retailer’s antennae should always be scanning the horizon for the next trends in business. Composite decking was one of these. Tradespeople have been requesting some­ thing called hydrofugo, a sort of very tough, stable and dense MDF substitute.

WINNERS AND LOSERS? As ever, the person on the end of the chain usually gets hit the hardest – and they get hit not only by the shortages but also the seemingly inevitable price rises. We can’t foresee the future with any accuracy so we plough on and hope that our decisions pay off in the longer run.

While not known for much glamour, whole production lines can come to a standstill if cranes stop functioning. The most frequent problem is inadequate joints and loosening bolts. Christoph Seeßelberg provides his views…

YOU’RE A RENOWNED EXPERT ON CRANE TRACKS, AND YOU’VE HAD AN ESTEEMED CAREER IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AND STEEL CONSTRUCTION. WHERE HAS THIS TAKEN YOU? As an officer in the German Army, I studied Civil Engineering at the University of the German Army in Munich. In my spare time, I prepared my thesis. After leaving the Military, I finished my studies with a Doctor of Engineering (Dr.­Ing.) at RWTH Aachen University.

My first job was with the German aerospace company Dornier, which was an unusual place to be for a civil engineer.

But I worked on durability and resilience in dynamic constructions, such as bridges and windmills, and then I got hooked on crane tracks. For the last 26 years, I’ve been teach­ ing and researching at the Munich University of Applied Science, writing books and advising private companies about crane tracks.

WHAT IS SO FASCINATING ABOUT CRANE TRACKS? AT FIRST GLANCE, IT DOESN’T APPEAR TO BE CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY. You’re right. At first sight, crane tracks are pretty boring and not very “sexy”. Essentially, there’s just a steel beam reaching over one, two, or more fields. But if you look closer, it’s really thrilling. It’s all about critical infrastructure and ensuring long­ term security and durability.

Recently, I advised a German company in heavy industry.

They reported a loss of one million euros every day that the crane track was down, and they needed to keep it working while at the same time investing in new cranes. So, we found a way to keep the crane running by using a “minimally inva­ sive” parts replacement. It was a fascinating project.

It’s just one example of how essential the crane tracks are for almost every industrial sector. Be it heavy industry like steel production, automotive assembly, or light mechanical industry, lifting heavy components is essential.

MANY INSTALLATIONS AROUND THE WORLD ARE AGING. HOW SERIOUS IS THIS PROBLEM? In Germany, more than 50% of the crane tracks were installed in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s. By now, they exceed their tech­ nical lifetime of around 25 years by far and need regular main­ tenance and upgrading. So, the question is, should they be replaced, or is it possible to save them for another couple of years while planning for a replacement?

We must be aware that the industry has changed a lot. The lifting loads are getting heavier. And today, the technical norms before 1980 are not adequate anymore. It’s a real problem. But I wouldn’t say it’s a ticking bomb because there are solutions.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY DEFICIENCIES? Every crane track which is older than 25–30 years will have defects. The main problems are cracks in the steel construction and loosened bolts, or even empty bolt holes. In regular inspections, problems with joints and bolts are the most frequent problem. In my experience, they account for 80% of the reported faults. So, it’s a significant problem.

Unfortunately, the German norm regulating the inspections, the VDI 6200, is not very well known and not consistently applied. If we don’t use the norm, there’s a risk that problems get so massive that components fall and cause severe accidents.

WHEN IT COMES TO SECURING JOINTS, WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED SOLUTION? With preloaded bolts, we need to ensure that they don’t lose the preload. A perfect way to do this is to use Nord­Lock wedge­locking washers. But regrettably, I receive almost daily proposed solutions with lock nuts or pall nuts, which are entirely unsuitable. This is because many construction engi­ neers are not familiar with dynamic load.

But cranes always produce dynamic load, which means that even perfect preload will lose preload over time. It’s amazing how fast this happens. Even I was shocked when Nord­Lock demonstrated the different locking solutions at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. The lock nuts and pal nuts loos­ ened within seconds when exposed to vibrations. Only the wedge­locking washers remained tightened.

DO YOU FORESEE ANY SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FUTURE OF CRANE TRACKS? I expect changes in the electronic control systems of cranes, making it possible to adapt to different loads at various parts of the crane tracks. This would make it possible to use older crane tracks longer. Another trend is that we’re moving from S235 steel to S355 steel. Finally, the trend is to use wider flange profiles for the beams, which improves stability.

IN YOUR VIEW, WHAT IS THE ROLE OF FUTURE ENGINEERS? Engineers tend to focus on purely technical matters without asking what it means for society. We must take a broader view and think outside the box. For example, at Munich University of Applied Sciences, the students must study at least two subjects without any relation to engineering topics. Sometimes people deride this as unnecessary, but as engineers, we must get more sensitive and more responsible.

BUMAX on meeting demanding bolt applications with high-strength stainless steel fasteners CHALLENGES WITH HIGH STRENGTH FASTENERS Stainless steel fasteners are often selected for their corrosion resistance properties, however reduced strength has histori­ cally been an accepted compromise of using stainless steel rather than carbon steel. Even carbon steel at high strengths can introduce challenges and risks. Most notably, carbon steel fasteners at very high strengths such as 12.9 can be susceptible to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement if not manufactured correctly or when they have certain protective coatings or surface treatments applied. Ductility and fatigue resistance properties can also be compromised at such high strengths, making these fasteners more brittle and subject to sudden fail­ ure. In addition, ensuring a reliable relationship between torque and bolt pre­load or clamp force become increasingly difficult to manage and can lead to variation between intended design and actual build.

Make ERP software work for your business Whether your business has already invested in ERP software or is planning to, the key consideration for such a purchase is, as with any major investment, how can you maximise the return on your spend? Some businesses are not utilising their ERP software fully or will buy software without getting the best results, says OGL… To see a true ROI, you must use technology to advance and change the way you do business, and this involves some groundwork. Before implementing ERP software, for example, current processes should be reviewed and new processes mapped out for both the management team and employees, data should be cleansed and updated, and employees fully trained on the software’s best use. In essence, implementing new processes via ERP software will need training, review and adaptation.

fter the dramas of the last two years, it may be a good opportunity to refine business processes and re­evalu­ ate technologies to understand how they will help reduce costs and support greater profits in 2022 and beyond.

There will still be a focus on digital transformation but using technology throughout your business isn’t just about putting old processes into new systems. Simply handing over a new software or ERP tool to your IT department or employees is unlikely to realise the returns promised in the business case.

Simply automating a few procedures or storing some of your data digitally isn’t going to give you the maximum efficiencies that are possible from an ERP solution.

BE DATA-DRIVEN As data is the key to maximising ROI for ERP software, what goes in determines what comes out. Data should be cleansed before it’s entered, and processes put in place to ensure it is constantly refreshed and updated. That way, businesses reap some key benefits from real­time accurate dashboards, quality forecasts, efficient demand planning and excellent customer service.

It is very common, and very tempting, to take existing business processes as is and automate them with an ERP system. While this is understandable, businesses must take the time and effort to critically analyse those processes as part of ERP requirements gathering. Implementing a new ERP system is an opportunity to identify, improve and redesign business processes.

CREATING AN EFFECTIVE DATA-DRIVEN BUSINESS STRATEGY AND BUILDING THIS INTO AN ERP DEPLOYMENT INVOLVES THREE KEY STAGES > 1. The first, to identify data sources 2. The second, to measure, predict and optimise the desired outcomes from the use of that data 3. The third stage is to act on any resulting data analysis or insights.

Showing stakeholders insights and results rewards their initial commitment and ensures a data­driven culture so that ERP systems are fully utilised throughout a business life cycle.

MANAGE CHANGE Another aspect of implementing a new system is managing the change that comes with it. If a business has refined, changed or created new processes, then time and effort must be invested into introducing those changes and making sure that they stick. The usual change management techniques apply: change must come from the top down and all stakeholders must have full buy­in – you may need to sell the benefits.

Change management is an absolute requirement when implementing a new ERP solution. The ability to effectively manage change may very well be the most important skill that executives, managers and employees need to master. Business transformations through ERP will not take place without effec­ tively managing change across three key organisational areas: people, process and technology.

Change is not always easily accepted, but when achieved can be incredibly rewarding for both the business and employees.

Managers and IT departments must also remember that the end­users of ERP software, those who have lived a business’ processes for many years, may have the greatest input for its best use. Listening and acting on this input can gain significant buy in to the deployment of ERP, which can then extend across an entire firm’s corporate culture.

Reviewing processes and spending time with employees can cement valuable team partnerships and provide an opportunity to streamline many aspects of a business while creating moti­ vation and positive vibes. Effective training partnerships within organisations mean that users accept new systems far quicker and with much greater success, and thus ROI, for a business.

FIND FORGOTTEN FUNCTIONALITY For those already using ERP software, questions should be asked around whether all the functionality the software provides is being used and if not, can new or forgotten aspects of the technology be deployed to maximise ROI. A strong rela­ tionship with a software partner ensures that users find out if new upgrades or functionality is available. When purchasing new ERP software, pay attention to all the features provided and ensure that all relevant functionality is used – they often save time and provide better visibility.

DEFY AN ECONOMIC DOWNTOWN The key for business continuity is to digitalise processes and data to ensure businesses aren’t reliant on physical files that are located at their premises. Management of product, customer and supplier data needs to be accessed digitally from a centralised solution to ensure accurate, real­time informa­ tion that can be accessed by the team from any location.

Similarly, digitalising and automating key sales, order, purchas­ ing and accounting processing with an ERP software also ensures that businesses can operate from an ERP system and do not rely on manually checking the warehouse, writing down sales orders, processing paper invoices or referring to physical price books.

For the most effective business continuity and disaster recov­ ery plan, hosting an ERP system in the cloud supports full remote access. This ensures that key information and processes can be accessed and managed from any location. market LOBBY FOR YOUR INDUSTRY Keeping the pressure on government and standing up to initiatives that don’t quite hit the mark is possible when the industry sticks together, argues Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of BHETA…

W

ith 2021 another commercially successful year for home and garden improvement suppliers, we see Globaldata predicting 2021 year end growth of nearly 6%, and this is a market which had been declining prior to the successive lockdowns. Frankly, the sector is unrecognis­ able when compared with 2019, with Barclaycard reporting spending on home improvements and DIY 22.6% higher in October 2021 compared to October of that year. Looking ahead with so many challenges to consumer spending from outside of the industry on the cards, 2022 is much harder to forecast. Nevertheless, the recent BHETA member survey sees over 70% of DIY and garden suppliers remaining confident about the year to come.

There’s no shortage of issues around at the moment to trouble us as both individuals, and businesses. Whether it’s the closing window of opportunity to address climate change, the continued legislative fall out from Brexit, the prevalence of violent crime, the human and commercial effects of the pandemic or the humanitarian and economic crisis arising from the war in Ukraine, the list of concerning subjects seems long and getting longer. To all these challenges, it is imperative that Governments are seen to react with proposals to make things better, grow back stronger and so on. Admittedly that is a big ask, but whether because of the pressure for speedy response, inadequate briefing or something more cynical, too often proposals from the powers that be can seem more about ticking boxes than really finding ways of getting to the heart of problems.

More and more frequently BHETA is seeing member companies wrestling with new legislation that purports to address serious issues, but costs legitimate businesses with legitimate goals considerable amounts of money and time. This would not be quite so bad if the legislation in question really helped to solve anything but often it does little or nothing to help – other than tick that box!

Taxing multi­use (as opposed to just single­use) plastic to address sustainability, blaming DIY tools and corrosive house­ hold cleaners (not to mention kitchen knives and cutlery) for violent crime and limiting their sale, imposing costly product reconfiguration, relabelling and repackaging on suppliers to comply with new import / export laws and failing (thus far) to

help companies anxious to secure or find alternatives to threat­ ened supply chains to do so sensibly and achievably. All exam­ ples of the sort of Government initiatives I mean.

The first time BHETA was approached to lobby about these kinds of issues, it would probably be fair to say that the associ­ ation was unsure how much it could achieve. It had a long and successful track record lobbying retailers about terms and conditions and the like on behalf of supplier members, but lobbying Government seemed at first to be a greater challenge.

Having managed to address the threat to multi­use plastic successfully, and also tackled the definition of many DIY and gardening tools and substances in relation to violent crime, BHETA is now far more confident that with a co­ordinated approach involving members, positive strides can be achieved.

My conclusion is that organisations like BHETA must lobby against unfair penalties which achieve nothing real, and I exhort all retailers and suppliers in our sectors to join with BHETA to do the same.

Of course, it’s easy to think – yes, I should speak out here, but what would I achieve? But the potential of lobbying, whom and how to target and the importance of co­ordinating concerted campaigns is now proven. And I have to say we are getting more and more successful, working with the membership to achieve real and meaningful wins for our sectors – housewares, small domestic electricals, DIY and garden. Following BHETA’s lobbying

on the draft Plastic Packaging tax legislation, coordinated with members, HMRC made a U­turn. Its original position was to extend the legislation’s scope to include multi­use consumer goods such as storage boxes and packed lunch boxes, toolboxes, and shop fittings as well as packaging. Prior to BHETA’s interven­ tion, the previous draft of the legislation could have precipitated costs of an additional estimated £50million per year in tax across the supplier base and this case certainly demonstrated what could be achieved.

Since 2019, BHETA has been engaged in lobbying on the legitimate sale of products such as cutlery, secateurs and drain cleaners which were included in the original draft of the forth­ coming Offensive Weapons Act (OWA). The act came into force this Spring on 6 April. While the new guidance still provides interpretation on selling products to under eighteens and online, and still includes knives used for the purpose of hobbies and trades, such as Stanley knives and snap­off cutters as well as gardening tools which ‘could commonly be described as a knife’, thanks to lobbying some significant exclusions have been achieved. These are products such as shears, secateurs, chisels, scissors and lawnmower blades.

Most recently we are making progress on the post­Brexit issue of CE / CA marking. The question of helping suppliers address their supply chain in the light of freight costs and now the disruption of warfare is also on the agenda.

So, never let it be said that there is no point in standing up to initiatives which are unfair and, in many cases, do not achieve much if anything in relation to the real problems society and business face. The key is co­operation between trade associa­ tions, suppliers, national retailers and independents. Together we can keep the pressure on and achieve many more benefits for our industry.

TORQUE COMMUNITY Jewson kicks off deal with EFL

S

aint Gobain­owned builders merchant Jewson is to get in front of more potential customers with a new deal with the English Football League (EFL). Having agreed an ongoing deal with the EFL, Jewson will have a decent presence across The Sky Bet Champi­ onship, League One and Two, and at Wembley for showpiece finals including the Carabao Cup, Papa Johns Trophy and the Sky Bet Play­Off Finals.

Jewson will also have a presence on the EFL website, social media channels and platforms such as iFollow, the online streaming service for EFL fans.

In addition to the central partnership with the EFL, Jewson customers will also see the brand at many grounds with its network of 500 branches becoming an official sponsor of 20 indi­ vidual clubs across each division of the football league.

EFL Clubs in England and Wales are key parts of their communities and play a significant role in the lives of Jewson’s customers and families, so said the builders merchant. In parallel to the EFL partnership, Jewson will launch a girls’ Grassroots football initiative which will see Jewson provide 72 sponsored foot­ ball kits to girls’ football clubs through­ out the UK, helping to support football provision amongst women and girls.

Selco plants 2nd forest in drive to cut carbon G rafton Group­owned Selco has extended its sustainable credentials with the planting of a second forest.

To mark Earth Day, Selco announced its direct support for the planting of 160,000 trees across more than 60 hectares on a site near Llandrindod Wells in Wales.

Following on from the planting of more than 100,000 trees near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders last year, this latest development represents the second phase of supporting ambitious tree planting projects.

The trees will offset around 7,000 tonnes of carbon during their lifecycle, the equivalent of almost two years of Selco customer deliveries, and forms part of a wider package of measures

designed to reduce the merchant’s carbon footprint.

Carine Jessamine, Selco’s marketing director and head of sustainability, said: “We have a long­term vision to deliver alternative fuel vehicles across the entire Selco business and implement a wider programme of many operational

changes to ensure we are playing our part in tackling climate change.

The site of the second Selco Forest, in Tyn Y Berth, is the equivalent of more than 100 football pitches with the trees planted included Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, Norwegian Spruce and broadleaves such as Silver Birch, Alder and Rowan.

3D printing firm reaches 275 school milestone

hropshire 3D has installed 3D print­ ing and STEM products into its 275th school, enabling thousands of school children in England and Northern Ireland to learn about additive manufac­ turing technology.

The students are gaining an under­ standing of engineering, CAD (computer aided design) and measurement, and adapting essential skills for every area of manufacturing.

In some schools, the installation has led to the setting up of school STEM Clubs, some of which have been visited

by leading manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover and the Manufacturing Tech­ nology Centre in Coventry, even giving students hands­on experience with a state­of­the art 3D printer which is now on the International Space Station.

Equipping pupils to understand the application and potential of technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution is important to help prepare them for modern manufacturing, says Shropshire 3D, which has leasing facilities to support the education sector to access this vital technology.
