Making Learning Awesome–Together When learning is designed with purpose, agency, and human connection at the center, magic happens—the kind of magic educators like you strive to bring to the classroom every day. That’s because learning becomes truly awesome when we unleash student curiosity, keep it active, and make it deeply social. After all, we wouldn’t accept a world where Netflix gives every single person the same movie recommendations, yet for decades we’ve expected every student to learn the exact same way. That’s why the International Society for Transforming Education exists: to help you flip the script and ignite awesome learning. A great starting point on the road to awesome teaching and learning is our Transformational Learning Principles, a practical framework for creating high-impact experiences. Anchoring your practice with these principles will help you create an environment where your students would rather be in your classroom than anywhere else. As you deepen your dedication to making learning awesome, you can sign our Safe & Purposeful Schools Pledge, a public commitment to implementing five practices for using technology responsibly and meaningfully with students. Then, at ISTELive 27 in Boston next summer, you’ll discover how educators like you are bringing the Transformational Learning Principles to life, living the pledge and leveraging real-world strategies for bringing joy to learning. I’d love to see you there – because awesome ideas only come to life when we’re in the room together. All the best, Richard Culatta CEO

AFFIRMING STUDENTS’ CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES BY

MUHAMMAD KHALIFA

What Does It Mean to Affirm Students’ Cultures and Communities? CULTURALLY- AND COMMUNITY-CONNECTED TEACHERS consider students’ identities, cultures, and communities as essential sources of knowledge, strength, and possibility rather than as peripheral to teaching and learning. Students never feel diminished or othered for showing up as their authentic selves. Teacher affirmation should ensure that students see their community knowledges—the experiences, values, languages, religions, and cultures that live in students’ communities—meaningfully reflected in curriculum, instruction, relationships, assessments, and climate and culture.

SHIFTING FROM DEFICIT THINKING TO HUMANIZING PRACTICE

HOW CAN YOU AFFIRM STUDENTS’ CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES?

By widening their understanding of what counts as knowledge, teachers often experience a shift in how they understand the needs of their students. Humanizing practices recognize diverse students and their communities as knowledgeable, capable, and deeply connected to rich cultural histories.

DEFICIT-ORIENTED THINKING

REFLECT ON YOUR CLASSROOM PRACTICES Examine your beliefs, approaches to teaching, and interactions with students and families.

HUMANIZING THINKING

Communities lack resources.

Communities hold cultural wealth, knowledge, wisdom, and complex histories that have shaped their ways of learning and being.

Families are uninvolved.

Families may engage in ways that schools do not always recognize, understand, or value.

Students are disengaged or don’t care about learning.

Educators may not be providing a culturally relevant learning experience; students may not see themselves, their experiences, or their communities reflected in learning.

Students lack academic language.

Students often speak multiple languages and use wide-ranging communication styles.

Behavior problems reflect poor values.

Students’ behavior and communication styles reflect different cultural norms and experiences.

Parents/caregivers “don’t care about education.”

Families may have experienced historical harm and exclusion and engage with schools in culturally different ways than school expectations dictate.

Students need to leave their communities behind to succeed.

Students’ communities are a source of strength, identity, knowledge, motivation, and leadership.

Some students are not ready for rigorous learning.

All students are capable of rigorous learning when educators connect high expectations with culturally responsive instruction.

LEARN FROM STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES Learn about the cultures and communities represented in your classroom, and develop an authentic understanding of them.

DESIGN CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE LEARNING Review your current materials and incorporate strategies for community-connected learning..

HUMANIZE ASSESSMENT PRACTICES Give students multiple ways to demonstrate learning and receive meaningful feedback.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

34

STRATEGIES

WHAT IS ACADEMIC INTEGRITY?

WHAT IS CHEATING?

Academic integrity is a commitment to ensure one’s work accurately represents what one understands and is able to do. Students can demonstrate integrity by (1) transparently documenting the process, resources, or sources used to engage in one’s work and (2) explaining or expanding on their evidence of learning (Frontier, 2025a). Teachers can help learners demonstrate integrity by aligning expectations for learning with opportunities to learn, designing quality assessments, establishing clear boundaries for using resources, and fostering a culture of learning where productive struggle, honesty, and advocating for one’s needs as a learner are highly valued.

Cheating is the use of a tool or resource to misrepresent one’s knowledge or skill to get undeserved credit. Clear policies related to cheating—including defining what cheating is, articulating categories of behaviors that constitute cheating, and establishing guidelines for accusations, due process, and consequences— ensure rules can be consistently and fairly enforced.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN ADDRESSING CHEATING AND SUPPORTING INTEGRITY room goal structures associated with integrity (Krou et al., 2021). Strategies that maximize students’ efforts to act with integrity help students understand what they should do. Teachers should work in partnership with students to maximize learning and proactively minimize the conditions where cheating is likely to occur.

Policies and strategies to deter cheating are essential to help establish boundaries for what students should not do. However, solely focusing on threats, detection, and consequences overlooks important factors related to why students cheat in the first place (Lee & Pope, 2024) and fail to support student beliefs and class-

CHEATING

INTEGRITY

Key Question

Did the student actually do the work?

Does the work accurately represent the student’s skill and understanding?

Student’s Action

The student engages in some form of cheating, plagiarism, academic deception, or enables others to cheat.

The student honestly represents current skill and understanding, is transparent about sources/resources used, and is able to explain content, concepts, or skills in their completed work.

Student’s Rationale

“It’s important that I get a good grade on this. The risks of failing or doing poorly are greater than the risks of revealing I don’t understand or might get caught.”

“It’s important that I understand and can do this. This is going to take some time and productive struggle. It’s OK not to know, but it’s not OK to misrepresent what I know.”

Teacher’s Role

• Detect or catch the student cheating • Confront and accuse the student or attempt to elicit a confession • Contact their parent or guardian and/or inform administration

• Balance challenge and support by aligning success criteria, instruction, feedback, and quality assessments with opportunities to learn. • Create a culture where it is OK to not know, to engage in productive struggle, to ask questions, and to seek help.

Next Steps

• Administrative investigation • Gather additional evidence • Further attempts to elicit a confession

• Teacher continuously monitors and aligns student progress with opportunities to learn. • Student builds capacity to act with integrity by asking questions, transparently documenting sources, and explaining their evidence of learning.

Result

If accusation was warranted: • Teacher upholds policy, maintains fairness, and deters others. • Student is held accountable and may internalize consequences as a productive life lesson.

• Report findings • Determine consequences

If accusation wasn’t warranted: • The student feels victimized. • The teacher may appear incompetent or unfair. • Trust between teacher and students is undermined.

1

• The teacher and students establish trust. • The teacher has an accurate understanding of what students know and understand. • Students know their teacher is there to help them engage in productive struggle and to learn. • Students internalize important content-related skills and understandings. • Students build agency and capacity to act with integrity.
